BEAKER Local band brings the love of punk back to Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s Must See Punk Band
BEAKER About Recording a new EP for the autumn. Ready those Volumetric Flasks, people. Biography Beaker was formed billions of years ago followed shortly by the big bang, which takes all the credit for creating the universe. Carl, the frontman, thought he needed help in spreading the message of punk/funk to everyone. He enlisted Anton Filyayev on the drums and Mike Adashek on the electric guitar, along with various other people and squirrels he could exploit. Since then, Beaker has been a constant force in the music world, but choose to stay behind the scenes.. Band Interests Having a good time.. all the time. BEAKER Shows: The Monkey Bar (Milwaukee)
BEAKER injects humor, lighting effects, and crowd interaction into all of its performances.
Incorporating the upbeat sounds of modern pop, punk, ska, and progressive rock, BEAKER provides high energy performances focused on fast paced danceable music blending both original songs and unique interpretations of those from other artists. BEAKER is more than just music as it focuses equal effort on the entertainment and performance side of each show. Playing as a trio since late 2005, the members crossed paths through several previous bands such as “Beerfish”, “Chuckster”, “Silent Anthem” and “MasterJack”. BEAKER came together with the intent of providing an entertaining experience for the audience instead of just musicians playing songs by injecting humor, lighting effects, and crowd interaction into all of its performances. In this way, BEAKER has been very successful in generating a very loyal following in and around the Milwaukee metro area.

This is a 60-minute exercise program held weekdays in four-week sessions. Though ‘boot camp’ may sound intimidating, it’s not that grueling hour with screaming drill sergeants. In actuality you will get a fun/effective workout that allows you to be successful all with the positive instruction of your coach. What’s a typical day at camp? “Every day is different than the day before so there’s nothing typical about it”, says instructor Chuck Walker. “In order to get the results you want, you have to keep your body guessing. You might see campers doing push-ups and crunches, weight-lifting, obstacle courses, kickboxing, hiking, Yoga, and more— whatever it takes to get in shape! On one day we might use the whole hour doing exercises with just your body weight. The next day we’ll have the group doing a medicine ball workout while I do a 2-4 minute one-on-one kickboxing workout with each camper as they rotate through stations. Everyone gets that personal training touch in camp. Also, because everybody needs a little bit of encouragement from time to time, we’ll help you keep track of your progress, with regular evaluations of your weight and body fat composition.” Simply put, “this isn’t your old-school aerobics class”. It’s more like a culmination of every fitness class you’ve ever taken, or wanted to take, chiseled into an hour of fat-burning, muscle-building action! About Underemployed
From Emmy-nominated producer Craig Wright (“Dirty Sexy Money,” “Six Feet Under”), MTV’s new scripted comedic drama “Underemployed” follows a group a five friends--Sophia, Daphne, Lou, Raviva and Miles--all filled with lofty goals, romantic dreams and hopefulness for complete world domination on their road to adulthood. But what happens when things don’t go exactly according to plan? “Underemployed” picks up one year after their college graduation when reality has set in and the group struggles, often comically, to stay optimistic through the major life changes young twentysomethings know all too well, including dead-end jobs, terrible bosses and romantic mistakes. This group of old friends becomes a new family as they go through all the highs and lows in their newfound adult lives and prove together that if life is about living, none of them are underemployed. The series, which is currently in production in Chicago, will feature 12 hour-long episodes and is slated to launch in fall 2012. Sophia struggles to hold on to her dreams of becoming a writer, as she serves maple bacon bars at Donut Girl, while Daphne continues to toil as an unpaid and unnoticed intern at an advertising agency. Lou and Raviva ended their relationship when she left for Los Angeles to become a famous singer, leaving Lou on his quest to save the environment, but all that changes when she shows up on his doorstep ninemonths pregnant. Meanwhile, Miles aspires to be a world famous model, the face of a major ad campaign, but instead finds himself serving mojitos and mini-tacos in his skivvies. The series stars Michelle Ang as Sophia; Sarah Habel as Daphne; Jared Kusnitz as Lou; Inbar Lavi as Raviva; and Diego Boneta as Miles.

MONEY!
HELPFUL TIPS
After graduation, you dream about getting a high paying job, having your own money to spend, purchasing a new car, getting your own apartment or even buying a house. The big problem most college graduates face is getting started and making wise decisions. Success is where preparation meets opportunity. Being successful is easier said than done. Many young people getting their first taste of money want to reward themselves by making bad investments. A new sports car is one of the most common bad purchases to young Americans that start their first career, which provides them with a little more money. Another frequent mistake is getting credit cards. The feeling of independence and accomplishment overcomes us, pre-spending money gets most young adults in thousands of dollars into debt. Your whole college life is all about budgeting your money just to get by. Now you want to become the high roller you always dreamed of. Most of us spend at least 10 percent more than we make. HOW TO
Organize
Your DORM
College apartments and dorm rooms are famous for being ridiculously small. With a little creativity, and planning, you can find ways to make more room for yourself-and your stuff. Most of you don’t have things that serves only one function and takes up more space than needed. Sure, a plug-in grilled cheese maker seems cool, but it takes up space and can only do one thing. Make sure that each item you need has more than one function. When planning out your space having a speaker system for your iPod that charges it at the same time helps keep your space efficient. Share with your roommates like having a printer that prints but also scans and copies that you can all use. Have the same blanket that you use to take out for sporting events as your bed cover as well. You spend alot of money for your small space and you should enjoy it. Living in a chaos is less productive for you and your roomates. Think of the things you’ll really need at any time and how often you use them. True, you may love to burn CDs with your favorite music. Instead of using CDs and DVD for your needed computer files, downsize with a simple zipdrive. If you must have blank CDs, reduce them to only a handful and keep all computer “needs” in one container.

student living
Sharing with your roommates is key. Do you really need two printers? Two minifridges? Coffee makers? Sometimes this can get you into disputs over decaf or regular coffee, that was my pizza. Communication is crazy important when maximizing space to help make you and your roomates space more organized and efficient. Most likely, you and your roommate can make things work out by sharing some of the most important stuff. Empty spaces can be used as decorative storage. Get rid of the old school plastic bins that end up piled in the corner. Now adays, you can go and pick up storage bins that have colorful style and function. Think of using them as style features. Use a small box to store remotes and magazines on your coffee table. A trunk can be a great coffee or side table. Your bed takes up a ton of space and has a great amount of space to fill underneath. In the back where you can’t reach as easy put your summer clothes, and other things you need but use infrequently. Keeping things organized as often as you can will bring peace to your state of mind. Keeping a space organized and clean will actually make your small dorm or apartment seem much larger.

Living with a college roomate
can be fun as well as very frustrating. Here are some helpful tips to help prevent and solve conflicts with your college flat mate. There are many living situration for a college student. Dorm rooms, apartments, and other on campus living are just a few choices that a student has to choose from. Whichever you choose , you will probably end up living with someone else. Here are some helpful tips to getting along with your roomate.

Setting Schedules
Decide what you share in common and what would make you the “odd couple”. Do you like your music loud or soft? What are your study habits? What are your sleeping habits? Asking more questions and setting up timed schedules to fit each others lifestyle can avoid problems in the future
The Rules
The best way avoiding conflicts is to set up rules of the apartment/dorm. Each rule has to be realalistic to one another. Reaching an agreement and posting them up somewhere highly visible will remind you what you and your roomate agree upon.
Compromising
In every situation in life you must compromise. Living with a roomate forces you to combine two lifestyles. Chances are you and your roomate will have serveral annoying habits that will cause strain on your living situation. Sometimes compromising (even if you are sure you are right) can be the only solution. This doesn’t mean you are surrendering to someone , but rather you are working with your roomate who you have chosen to live with.
Communication
Communication can be the trickiest part. Knowing when or when not to address something is a important factor to a relationship with a roomate. You will at times become annoyed with each other. Instead of nitpicking, address the issues that come up more then others or situations that you would not want to happen in the future. Don’t forget to give your roomate postitive feedback from time to time as well. Living with someone can be difficult, so create a schedule, set up rules, compromise and communicate to help get along with your new roomate. Enjoy your new space!

Tim Carney
“With passion comes money, which brings freedom. Freedom is really the dream.”
Around these parts, he’s known as Dr. Floor. The man behind the wheel of the Lakeside Sanding van is a dedicated connoisseur of hardwood floors. He loves everything about them – the look, the feel and the smell. It hasn’t always been that way says Tim Carney (aka Dr. Floor). “I was kicking around Lacrosse when I moved to Cedarburg and started working at my uncle’s gas station. One day, someone came into the gas station and offered me a job at a flooring company.” But working for others was not satisfying for this ultra go-getter. With the unbelievable social skills and pin point perfection, he had a new take on what he was really great at. Becoming a twenty-something entrepreneur was next. He started his own company and has been installing and refinishing floors ever since. “Was it easy to take this risk, not really but I believed in my-
self and I have become a success after a few of those starter years.” He smiles and gives a wink. “I’ve worked on floors all over southeastern Wisconsin. From oak to the most exotic wood, I’ve seen it all.” Carney especially loves the transformation of taking an old scratched floor and making it look new again. “People are amazed that their floors can be restored to their former glory and I love the look on their face the first time they see them.” So what’s next for this business owner.”The Mayor of Cedarburg, no just kidding. I really want to expand my business…maybe find my soulmate, I take things one day at a time” Asked what advice he would give a twenty-something that is getting into the work force or thinking of starting a business. “Look at what you are good at and if it is something you want to pursue. With passion comes money, which brings freedom. Freedom is really the dream.” You can check out his website at www.lakesidesanding.com.

Pondering what to do next?
EXPLORE THE
MILITARY
As an 18 year-old person without financial help from your parents, there are not a lot of options for getting money for college. With the price of a college education going through the roof, most people are not interested in going into deep debt for their four- year degree. One option that many young adults explore is the military. Besides instilling many values that young people can use such as responsibility, punctuality and attention to detail, the armed services also provide money for college.
Air and Army National Guard
The Air National Guard is a reserve of the Air Force while the Army National Guard is a reserve of the Army. The Guard differs from the other Reserve branches in that the Guard has a state mission in addition to a federal mission. The commitment in the Air Guard and Army National Guard is very similar to reserve service. After completing basic military and technical training in the career field of your choice, you will return home to serve one weekend a month and at least two weeks per year. In the Guard, you can serve where you live while attending college. Since the Guard has both state and federal missions, you will receive both state and federal educations benefits. The Wisconsin National Guard Tuition Grant Program reimburses 100% college tuition every semester (up to UW-Madison’s rate of tuition) in addition to the Montgomery GI Bill which pays $333 per month for full-time college attendance. Additional cash incentives of up to $20,000 may be offered in selected career fields. A six year enlistment is required to receive federal education benefits, with a two year inactive period if you choose not to reenlist. In addition to education benefits, Guard members are offered low-cost health insurance; eligibility for VA home loans; free, space available air travel; low-cost life insurance; a military retirement plan; and paid career training in the field of your choice.

ANXIETY
AND
WORRIES
IN THESE PROLONGED AND BOTHERSOME STATES OF ANXIETY AND APPREHENSION, ONE MAY EXPERIENCE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING DISCOMFORTS: • Feeling restless, keyed up, or on edge • Easily feeling fatigued • Finding it difficult to concentrate, becoming distracted easily, or mind going blank • Feeling irritated easily • Having muscle tension and feeling our body can’t relax • Having difficulties falling or staying asleep, and overall having unsatisfying sleep
Worries, fears, and anxiety are probably the most common sources of emotional pain for all human beings all across the world. Our worries and fears are usually in response to consciously recognized threats or danger in our surroundings. Anxiety according to the definition offered in standard text books is “the apprehensive anticipation of future danger or misfortune accompanied by a feeling of dysphoria or somatic tension.” The focus of apprehension and anticipated danger could be from within ourself or in our surroundings and external world. Our worries, fears, and anxiety often get us to re-evaluate our internal and external lives and it becomes the motive for developing more constructive changes within ourselves, in our environment, and our goals and future. These kind of benign worries are usually limited in their intensity and duration, and after finding a solution one sees the relief from all the pains of apprehension. However, there are times that apprehensive expectations are excessive and happen more days than not. These apprehensions are about a variety of events or activities and symptoms can last for six months. One finds it difficult to contain the worries and get some relief from the discomfort of worries. Anxiety Disorder is often a familial or genetic disorder and numbers of relatives may suffer from it. Other relatives may have depression, mood disorder, OCD, intense phobias, etc… It can be seen in all age groups, from children to the elderly. Its occurrence in women is somewhat more than men. (55-60% of anxious individuals are women). It is quite prevalent, about 5% of individuals have had episodes of severe anxiety lasting more than six months, and many suffer all their lives. The natural course of it is fairly chronic with periods of worsening, then feeling somewhat better for a while, then having another episode. The symptoms often get worse at times of stress. Research is progressing to understand genetic aspects and chemical imbalances, and the nature of anxiety. We are able to help individuals and prevent ongoing intense and painful suffering. Education of Outhouse
DID SCHOOL PREPARE YOU FOR A BETTER FUTURE? Its a hard argument to say that the person with the masters degree, who cant find a job, is in a better place than the high school drop out with a great career. While education is certainly linked to quality of life, quality of life trumps education every time. So why aren’t we making this the ultimate goal of education? We should try to direct education to quality of life at every turn.
16 BTS GUIDE FALL 2012-WINTER 2013
If the accepted model of a bathroom was an outhouse, we would constantly try to improve upon that model. We would be inventing covered walkways to the outhouse, carpeted concrete and various heating methods, etc. The person that suggested the bathroom should be inside the house as a dedicated room would be viewed as a heretic because it wasn’t the accepted norm. They would be complaining that it would be stinky, an eyesore and generally a stupid idea. Because people are incapable or unwilling to think for themselves, they roadblock ideas that should make sense but take them out of their comfort zone. People, for some reason, always want to improve upon the existing system even when it is clearly inferior and outdated. The idea of using an outhouse, no matter how luxurious, is laughable but probably wouldn’t be if this was the accepted norm. This would be true even if someone was standing in front of the general public explaining the genius and benefit of an indoor bathroom with a detailed slideshow and blueprints in their hands.
Education and School Are Not The Same and Shouldn’t Be There should be a difference between school and education. As crazy as this sounds, school should not be the place where people learn the bulk of their trivial knowledge. Kids should learn the basics about reading, writing, math, social studies, etc. but then they should learn the subjects that they can apply to their future life. Once this is taken care of people will have plenty of time to learn what they want on their own. School tries to teach too many things, but its over reaching nature leads to a watered down experience that leads the student to neither be well rounded nor have the job skills to cope with the world. How is college measured? It is measured by the quality of career options it yields. But, why should we wait until college to tackle this? Our biggest concern for our kids is that they will have a decent career and, thus, will have the opportunities their peers have. Yet, we allow schools to continue with a curriculum that is not focused on this and consequently our kids are in a bind after high school graduation to make choices that should have been dealt with years earlier. Which would you choose for your child? The straight A student with the average career or the average student with the great career? Almost every parent and child faces it – the moment of high school completion and the feeling that very little has been accomplished in the way of furthering the child’s autonomy and self reliance. College isn’t an option, it is a necessity because the child was not taught any marketable skills that would relieve them from the astronomical expense of college and, at least, four more years of
drudging through the monotonous experience people mistake for education. Do most people really need to go to college? The answer should be a resounding no. But, their education from K-12 is so misguided that it necessitates the need for college and the almighty degree. Have you ever thought about how it could be different? Why is it that traditional education is the only service where the customer pays dearly but gets absolutely no say over the product for which they are paying? It is amazing that this is seldom, if ever, questioned. People just blindly agree to this proposition without taking into account the value of their investment. If you wanted to go on a vacation to Italy and the travel agent insisted that going to Germany for double the cost was the better option you would find a new travel agent who could get you a good deal to Italy. And, you would be offended that the travel agent thought they knew best about your vacation. And, the travel agent would shortly be out of business for not addressing the desires of the customer. School is the same way. They are sending you to Germany whether you like it or not. You are completely powerless to modify the curriculum to meet the needs of your child in the way you see fit. You either play ball or get labeled as a rebel or troublemaker. The school administration does not answer to you, you answer to them. If you feel as though your child is getting too much homework and want them to be doing other things, get ready for a call from the school followed by a visit from social services. This should infuriate us but we are too conditioned to accept this to complain. Why aren’t we more involved in designing the education that will make our children prosper in the world in which we live? Are we too stupid, lazy or intimidated to stand up and direct our child’s future? The current system doesn’t promote success in the way we all know it to be. It advocates a watered down, roundabout method of learning a lot of general stuff without piecing it together for the child. Consequently, the child mistakenly believes their education has prepared them to deal with the rest of their life when, in fact, it has created a false sense of security that is quickly wiped away upon leaving the academic world.
School Should Be Completely Different
The goal is for kids to be jumping out of bed to see what is on the docket for the day. A balanced blend (probably imbalanced by most) of physical activity and teaching keeps the kids awake. The two concepts should not be mutually exclusive either. A skilled teacher should be able to deliver a message while in the middle of an interesting physical activity that they designed. Kids should embrace the idea of competition early on because this is how it is going to be throughout life. A
good teacher should be able to find areas where all kids can excel and be the champion of their domain. Get rid of traditional goals and address reality while teaching how to deal one on one with people in a comfortable manner that belies an intricate understanding of how to deal with people. Highly personable, healthy and uniquely positioned in job of choice should be the goal. A hundred kids with the exact same skills does not give anyone a competitive advantage -– a term you hear a lot in many areas of town. Imagine how much a teacher is worth that can deliver a kid who has highly marketable skills, a great backup career plan, advanced knowledge of health and nutrition, and great people skills.
We Need to Priortize 1. Health. 2. Money 3. Social Situation.
One, if not all, of these concepts is generally on your mind during the course of the day. A lot of us haven’t broken it down this way, but a couple seconds of thought should make it an easy concept to digest. If these are the issues that consume us all day then why aren’t we pursuing education that addresses these? Why aren’t we pursuing opportunities that will prepare us to deal with these three life altering concepts? If you agree that you can’t think of concepts that are more brain and energy intensive and also agree that putting our brainpower towards dealing with these takes maximum priority, then why wouldn’t you agree that the school curriculum has a somewhat misguided goal when it comes to educating the students. Options. Isn’t this what makes life fun and interesting? Unfortunately, it usually takes money to have options. If you want to move out of a job to start something new either you have something lined up or have money to make the transition. If you want to take a safari to Africa it takes money. If you want to tell your boss to shove it, it takes money. Money is the number one thing people dream of having because then the smorgasbord of life is opened up and the adventurous possibilities are endless. With money, your options are increased many fold. Whether it be right or wrong or just an illusion, people believe that having money will improve their life greatly. This is why the vast majority either dream about or take on some sort of entrepreneur venture. They are hoping they can find the pot of gold and have the life they can only fantasize about. Would you still go to college if you knew you could make the same money and have the same career opportunities without it? Take a minute and think about this before reading on. Probably the thought that went through your head was that you couldn’t have the same financial opportunities
without college so the point is moot. The actual goal of the question was to find out if you really feel as though college is a means to a financial end and little more. While most people arduously defend college as a supremely worthwhile venture, if they dissected their true goals regarding college they might have a different feeling about the aforementioned question. My contention is that college is only about furthering your financial situation and little more. The real question is would college be worth $100,000 or anything close if the financial incentive was taken out of it. If you could get the job you wanted without college, would you still spend the big bucks to go through it? Does the college experience have the same sheen without the financial benefit? Would you put the money into college or something like a down payment on a house if college did not offer a financial reward? Isn’t what we remember most fondly about college the social experiences? There must be a way to have that experience without putting us deeply in debt. Although the rest of this manifesto is about schooling before the college years, college was used as the example because it is an elective experience and has a very real price tag that you are constantly evaluating. People claim they value their time and money, but they hardly question one of the biggest experiences and expenses of their lives. Have you ever noticed that when college grads are on a news show the only question ever asked is if the college experience led to great career opportunities? The question of whether the college experience made you a better person or enriched your life is a sidenote because the primary purpose of college is to lead to a good career. The question for this discussion is if you had the choice between a traditional K-12 experience and one that focused on financial, social and healthful success which would you choose? If a K-12 school system clearly dictated that their central goal was to make you financially successful, socially skilled and nutritionally knowledgeable would that be better than the traditional K-12? If there were two schools and you knew the “alternative” school virtually guaranteed you financial success would you want to be at that school. Below is an outline of the type of school being discussed.
will turn a deaf ear to the rest of the story because they don’t like this premise. This very straight forward look at the purpose of school, for some reason, scares most people. It seems to really strike an insecure chord because it is much too practical and realistic to be digestible by the average humanoid. There should be no greater goal than preparing the student to become the money maker. That isn’t to say that skills such as psychology, history and social studies shouldn’t be taught. Because the skills needed to make the student a financial success are vast, the student will inevitably receive the well rounded education that almost everyone mistakenly believes should be the goal of school. School should never be equated with education or learning. It should simply be a means to a great career and then the individual can decide in which way they want to further their true learning once they have the money issue out of their way. How many people do you know that can’t sleep at night because they feel like their education is not well rounded enough? Probably none. Conversely, how many people do you know that can’t sleep at night because they are afraid they won’t have enough money to pay the bills or can’t stand the job they are at? This sounds like heresy to most, but the question is why? People love to learn, but the majority loathe school. The reason has little to do with anyone’s efforts.
The reason has to do with the model and the goal. The model of school is one of drudgery and redundancy with the focus on material that is not applicable to the goal of money making. This insane goal of trying to create the “well rounded” individual does not lead to a great outcome for most. The high school graduate with absolutely no high paying job skills would gladly trade it all for one skill that would pay well and yield independence from the parents, friends and any other aspect of the world that is looking at them with the “what are you going to do now” eyes. The offshoot of this goal would be a much happier and more well rounded child who is excited to learn because they can see how everything they are learning is going to be applicable in the real world in which they live. We have to lift the veil of the “well rounded” child model in favor of the “well prepared” child who will have unique, highly marketable skills in the workplace and also priorities that are more in line with reality. They can become well rounded as they are backpacking through Europe on their six week paid vacation from the job they can’t wait to get back to. Besides money as the primary goal, there should be a couple of secondary goals. Being physically fit and understanding health and nutrition is abundantly important. If school had an in school>>page18
Here We Go
Kids dedicate the better part of their youth to the institution known as school. Everyone pretends like the curriculum is great and will further their child to great heights. The funny thing is that no one wants to think about what school should really be and therefore the curriculum is not suited for a great end result. School should ultimately be about giving a person unique skills that will help them to attain financial independence in a manner that is appealing to them. There are probably a lot of people who

With older kids, the teacher has the luxury of enhancing their learning and fitness while instructing the students. They should pick subject matter that is interesting and informative to them as well as the student. If the student finds the subject matter applicable to their life there is a much higher chance that they will retain the knowledge. The teachers should be constantly evaluating and critiquing each other’s performance so they are constantly improving.

school<<page17 depth curriculum about health and nutrition, kids would inevitably make the right food choices and keep themselves in shape because they would understand how life changing this is. Television shows such as The Doctors and Dr. Oz should be routinely shown in the classroom. This would also have a dramatic effect on the major health care problem we have in this country. When students picked their lunch menu, they would choose good stuff because they would cringe at eating things that they knew were unhealthy or would make them sick and diseased. This information is infinitely more useful and important than trigonometry for example. Educating kids about health in a comprehensive manner which includes a lot of physical activity (fun stuff, not military regime) is huge and would be a game changer in the person’s life, the economy and the state of the overall country. Genuine people skills are far more marketable than knowing everything about history as another example. Far too many people lack the basic interaction skills to relate to a friend, colleague, etc. This is why sales people are never without a job. Companies always need someone to push their products and finding these people is extremely difficult because the average person doesn’t have the basic skills to relate to another. From the minute a student walks in the door, people skills should be an obvious part of the curriculum. No one is saying that trigonometry and history aren’t important or shouldn’t be taught. It is about prioritizing what needs to be emphasized and presenting the most important first. Another concept that has to be firmly embraced is that competition is necessary and actually a good thing. The key is that the teachers have to develop a wide variety of exercises that create a multitude of winners and losers. Almost everyone is good at something and it is up to the instructor to create exercises that allow each individual a chance to 18 BTS GUIDE FALL 2012-WINTER 2013
win. Pretending like competition doesn’t exist is doing the student a grave disservice. Competition is all around us and can actually make us better people if it is blended with compassion and sportsmanship. We have to stop pretending like money isn’t the goal. Money is usually the goal not because we are materialistic pigs, but rather the freedom it brings us. The ability to pay bills and knowing the bill collector is not lurking in the shadows is a huge goal for most. The high school graduate isn’t expecting to be Donald Trump. They just don’t want the world around them to close down for lack of exciting opportunities and money making ventures.
The Curriculum School Environment
There should be one fairly elaborate center of fitness for the kids. The teacher has to utilize the facility to its fullest teaching the kids while, simultaneously, keeping them active and engaged. The kids might have to wear a special uniform to be comfortable moving around so much.
The Teacher
The educational background of the teacher has to include being bi-lingual, health aware and fit, and also socially competent. It is important that the teacher is as excited about the undertaking as the student. The teacher needs to have personal goals (not for their students, for themselves) that they work on while teaching the kids. You don’t want the teacher to be bored while they are teaching. It will lead to bad results. If the teacher is instructing younger kids, their personal goals should be more on physical fitness. The reason being is that younger kids will not have an intellectually stimulating enough curriculum to make it exciting for the teacher. Consequently, a more physical program for the teacher would be in line with what the younger kids are doing. If the teacher is getting buff and healthy they have one less thing to fret about during their nonteaching hours and can focus on doing a better job for the students.
through
The very first thing a kid should learn when they enter school is how to deal with their peers. A lot of time should be devoted to developing a child’s ability to deal with others. Exercises such as introductions, shaking hands how to feel comfortable in a social setting are extremely important. At an early age, the child should learn at least one foreign language and also one trade so they are beginning to have career options and actual independence at a young age. Don’t get overly hung up on how much the kid is learning as long as they are happy and eager to learn and excited about what the next event in their school day will be. At this point the educator has to have perfected the teaching in motion technique so the kids are having enough physical activity mixed with fun to hear the message for a full day. The teacher should introduce the video camera as a teaching tool to start showing the student how they are perceived by others. Knowing how an individual appears to the outside world is invaluable. If the teacher keeps the kids active enough, they will be able to present a lot of information that is actually retained.
Fifth through Eighth
By this age, the student should begin having a comprehensive understanding of the importance of diet and exercise in life. They should begin to be taught the nuances of life and how to notice subtleties in different life situations. Understanding that being able to read and understand others is a very useful skill. They should refine one skill that they utterly enjoy that makes them unique in the market place. The teacher has to be looking at the children as highly unique individuals and has to accommodate the teaching to meet the student’s needs. Physical activity has to be ramped up as well, but it is important that teacher keeps the activities fresh and interesting as well as informative. Up the competitive level while keeping things interesting. The teacher has to skillfully craft exercises that are tailored to many areas to create a multitude of winners and losers. Many guest speakers from various fields for the 7th and 8th graders about what it is really like in the real world and the skills they would recommend they
learn. The school has to encourage the speakers to inform the students of what the job is really like and not some fairy tale version of the truth.
High School: The Years When the Student Really Tunes Out
By now, the parents, teachers and student should have a pretty good idea which direction the kid is going. They should be interning somewhere or be bombarded with information about their career of choice. They should be highly encouraged to reach for the stars and not let others stand in the way of their dream. They should be hit with a mixture of academia that presses their mind and improves their marketability. The teacher has to clearly show the student how to go about fulfilling their dream by presenting a path that shows necessary job skills, contacts and any other resources that will help the student achieve success. Understanding how to tap into the energy teenagers are dividing between school and social activities is key at this point. Keep the physical activity level up, but spice it up with a lot of mental stimuli that focuses on current events to keep their mind thinking about how they are going to triumph in the real world. Their path should be clear and attainable at this point.
End Game
The bottom line is kids should be jumping out of bed to see what is on the docket for the day. A good teacher should be able to find areas where all kids can excel and be the champion of their domain. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
FINDING THE RIGHT CAREER Choosing or Changing Career Paths
Whether you’re just leaving school, finding opportunities limited in your current position or, like many in this economy, facing unemployment, it may be time to consider your career path. Regardless of your reasons, the right career is out there for everyone. By learning how to research options, realize your strengths, and acquire new skills, as well as muster the courage to make a change, you can discover the career that’s right for you. Finding meaningful work in today’s world You may have fallen into the trap of thinking the sole point of work is to bring home enough money to live comfortably. While adequate compensation is important in any job, it’s not the whole story. If you are unsatisfied with what you do every day, it takes a toll on your physical and mental health. You may feel burned out and frustrated, anxious, depressed, or unable to enjoy time at home knowing another workday is ahead. What’s
more, if you don’t find your work meaningful and rewarding, it’s hard to keep the momentum going to advance in your career. You are more likely to be successful in a career that you feel passionate about. Whether you’re looking to enter the work force for the first time or contemplating a career change, the first step to choosing a fulfilling career is to uncover the activities that get you excited and bring you joy. Discovering new possibilities The first step in considering a career change is to think carefully about what really drives you. You might find it hard to get past thinking about “what pays the most” or “what is most secure,” especially in today’s economy. However, it’s important to first discover your primary interests and passions. This can open doors to careers that you might not have considered. Once you have that foundation, you can start fine tuning your search for the right career. You may be surprised at how you can fit your pas-
sions into a new career. Exploring your career opportunities Focus on the things you love to do. What have you dreamed of doing in the past? What do you naturally enjoy doing? Jot down what comes to mind, no matter how improbable it seems. Look for clues everywhere. Take note of projects or topics that stir your compassion or excite your imagination. Reflect on stories of people you admire. Ask yourself why certain activities make you happy, and pay attention to times when you are really enjoying yourself. Be patient. Remember that your search may take some time and you might have to go down a few different roads before finding the right career path. Time and introspection will help you identify the activities you most enjoy and that bring you true satisfaction. Overcoming obstacles to career happiness It’s always challenging to consider a huge change in your life, and there may be many reasons why you think chang-
ing careers is not possible. Here are some common obstacles with tips on how to overcome them: It’s too much work to change careers. Where would I ever begin? Changing careers does require a substantial time investment. However, remember that it does not happen all at once. If you sit down and map out a rough plan of attack, breaking down larger tasks into smaller ones, it is a lot more manageable than you think. And if the payoff is a happier, more successful career, it’s worth it. I’m too old to change careers. I need to stay where I am. If you have worked for a number of years, you may feel that you’ve put too much time and effort into your career to change midstream. Or you may be concerned about retirement and health benefits. However, the more you’ve worked, the more likely you are to have skills that can transfer to a new career. Even if you are close to receiving a pension or career>>page20 FALL 2012-WINTER 2013 BTS GUIDE 19
career<<page19 other benefits, you can start to plan now for a career transition after retirement. I don’t have enough skills to consider a new career. You may be unaware of the skills you have, or low self-esteem may lead you to underestimate your marketability. Either way, you probably have more skills than you think. Consider skills you’ve learned not only from your job but also from hobbies, volunteering, or other life experiences. And gaining skills is not an all-or-nothing proposition. You can volunteer once a week or take a night class to move forward, for example, without quitting your current job. In this economy, I’m lucky to have a job. I don’t want to rock the boat. In today’s climate, it might feel like too much of a risk to consider changing careers. However, if you’re unhappy in your current job, doing research on other options will only benefit you in the long run. You may discover a career with a more stable long-term outlook than your current career, for example. And you don’t have to quit your current job until you are confident of your new career path. Finding the right career tip 1: Identify occupations that match your interests So how do you translate your interests into a new career? With a little research, you may be surprised at the careers that relate to many of the things you love to do. Career tests Different online tools can guide you through the process of self-discovery. Questions, quizzes, and personality assessments can’t tell you what your perfect career would be, but they can help you identify what’s important to you in a career, what you enjoy doing, and where you excel. One example, frequently used by universities and the U.S. government, is the RIASEC/Holland interest scale. It outlines six common personality types, such as investigative, social, or artistic, and enables you to browse sample careers based on the type of personality you most identify with. Find links to this and other online career tests in the Resources section below. Researching specific careers If you have narrowed down some specific jobs or careers, you can find a wealth of information online, from description of positions to average salaries and estimated future growth. This will also help you figure out the practical priorities: How stable is the field you are considering? Are you comfortable with the amount of risk? Is the salary range acceptable to you? What about commute distances? Will you have to relocate for training or a new job? Will the new job affect your family? Get support and information from others While you can glean a lot of information from research and quizzes, there’s no substitute for information from someone 20 BTS GUIDE FALL 2012-WINTER 2013
currently working in your chosen career. Talking to someone in the field gives you a real sense of what type of work you will actually be doing and if it meets your expectations. What’s more, you will start to build connections in your new career area, helping you land a job in the future. Does approaching others like this seem intimidating? It doesn’t have to be. Networking and informational interviewing are important skills that can greatly further your career. You may also consider career counseling or a job coach, especially if you are considering a major career shift. Sometimes impartial advice from others can open up possibilities you hadn’t considered. Finding the right career tip 2: Evaluate your strengths and skills Once you have a general idea of your career path, take some time to figure out what skills you have and what skills you need. Remember, you’re not completely starting from scratch—you already have some skills to start. These skills are called transferable skills, and they can be applied to almost any field. Some examples include: management and leadership experience communication (both written and oral) research and program planning public speaking conflict resolution and mediation managing your time effectively computer literacy foreign language fluency Tips for discovering your transferable career skills Don’t limit yourself to experiences only at work. When you are thinking about your skills, consider all types of activities including volunteering, hobbies, and life experiences. For example, even if you don’t have formal leadership or program planning experience, founding a book club or organizing a toy drive are ways that you have been putting these skills into practice. List your accomplishments that might fit in. Don’t worry about formatting these skills for a resume at this point. You just want to start thinking about what skills you have. It can be a tremendous confidence booster to realize all of the skills you’ve developed. Brainstorm with trusted friends, colleagues, or mentors. They may be able to identify transferable skills you’ve overlooked or help you better articulate these skills in the future. Uncover more transferable skills by taking the online tests listed in the Resources section below. Finding the right career tip 3: Develop your skills and experience If your chosen career requires skills or experience you lack, don’t despair.
There are many ways to gain needed skills. While learning, you’ll also have an opportunity to find out whether or not you truly enjoy your chosen career and also make connections that could lead to your dream job. Gaining career skills: Utilize your current position. Look for on-the-job training or opportunities to do projects that develop new skills. See if your employer will pay part of your tuition costs. Identify resources in the community. Find out about programs in your community. Community colleges or libraries often offer low cost opportunities to strengthen skills such as computers, basic accounting, or how to start a business. Local Chambers of Commerce, Small Business Administrations, or state job development programs are also excellent resources. Volunteer or work as an intern. Some career skills can be acquired by volunteering or doing an internship. This has the added benefit of getting you in contact with people in your chosen field. Take classes. Some fields require specific education or skills, such as an educational degree or specific training. Don’t automatically rule out more education as impossible. Many fields have accelerated programs if you already have some education, or you may be able to do night classes or part-time schooling so that you can continue to work. Some companies even offer tuition reimbursements if you stay at the company after you finish your education. Finding right career tip 4: Consider starting your own business If you’re getting worn down by a long commute or a difficult boss, the thought of working for yourself can be very appealing. And even in a slower economy, it’s still possible to find your perfect niche. Depending on the specialty, some companies prefer to streamline their ranks and work with outside vendors. However, it is especially important to do your homework and understand the realities of business ownership before you jump in. Make sure you are committed to and passionate about your business idea. You will be spending many long hours getting started, and it may take a while for your business to pay off. Research is critical. Take some time to analyze your area of interest. Are you filling an unmet need? Especially if you are considering an online business, how likely is your area to be outsourced? What is your business plan, and who are your potential investors? Learn more in the Resources section below. Expect limited or no earnings to start. Especially in the first few months, you are building your base and may have start-up costs that offset any profit initially. Make sure you have a plan on how to cope during this period.
Final tips for career changers Pace yourself and don’t take on too much at once. Career change doesn’t happen overnight, and it is easy to get overwhelmed with all the steps to successfully change careers. However, you will get there with commitment and motivation. Break down large goals into smaller ones, and try to accomplish at least one small thing a day to keep the momentum going. Don’t rush into a change because of unhappiness in your current job. If you are stressed and unhappy in your current job, or unemployed, you might be feeling a lot of pressure to make a quick change. However, if you don’t do enough research, you might end up in an even worse position than before, with the added stress of a new position and new learning curve. Ease slowly into your new career. Take time to network, volunteer, and even work part-time in your new field before committing fully. It will not only be an easier transition, but you will have time to ensure you are on the right path and make any necessary changes before working full-time in your new field. Take care of yourself. You might be feeling so busy with the career transition that you barely have time to sleep or eat. However, managing stress, eating right, and taking time for sleep, exercise, and loved ones will ensure you have the stamina for the big changes ahead.
