FALL 2013 BACK TO SCHOOL COLLEGE
education Education of Outhouse
DID SCHOOL PREPARE YOU FOR A BETTER FUTURE?
If the accepted model of a bathroom was an outhouse, we would constantly try to improve upon that model. We would be inventing covered walkways to the outhouse, carpeted concrete and various heating methods, etc. The person that suggested the bathroom should be inside the house as a dedicated room would be viewed as a heretic because it wasn’t the accepted norm. They would be complaining that it would be stinky, an eyesore and generally a stupid idea. Because people are incapable or unwilling to think for themselves, they roadblock ideas that should make sense but take them out of their comfort zone. People, for some reason, always want to improve upon the existing system even when it is clearly inferior and outdated. The idea of using an outhouse, no matter how luxurious, is laughable but probably wouldn’t be if this was the accepted norm. This would be true even if someone was standing in front of the general public explaining the genius and benefit of an indoor bathroom with a detailed slideshow and blueprints in their hands.
Its a hard argument to say that the person with the masters degree, Education and School Are who cant find a job, is in a better place than the high school drop out with a great career. While education is certainly linked to quality Not The Same and Shouldn’t of life, quality of life trumps education every time. So why aren’t we Be There should be a difference between making this the ultimate goal of education? We should try to direct school and education. As crazy as this education to quality of life at every turn. sounds, school should not be the place where people learn the bulk of their trivial knowledge. Kids should learn the basics about reading, writing, math, social studies, etc. but then they should learn the subjects that they can apply to their future life. Once this is taken care of people will have plenty of time to learn what they want on their own. School tries to teach too many things, but its over reaching nature leads to a watered down experience that leads the student to neither be well rounded nor have the job skills to cope with the world. How is college measured? It is measured by the quality of career options it yields. But, why should we wait until college to tackle this? Our biggest concern for our kids is that they will have a decent career and, thus, will have the opportunities their peers have. Yet, we allow schools to continue with a curriculum that is not focused on this and consequently our kids are in a bind after high school graduation to make choices that should have been dealt with years earlier. Which would you choose for your child? The straight A student with the average career or the average student with the great career? Almost every parent and child faces it – the moment of high school completion and the feeling that very little has been accomplished in the way of furthering the child’s autonomy and self reliance. College isn’t an option, it is a necessity because the child was not taught any marketable skills that would relieve
BACK TO SCHOOL COLLEGE FALL 2013
them from the astronomical expense of college and, at least, four more years of drudging through the monotonous experience people mistake for education. Do most people really need to go to college? The answer should be a resounding no. But, their education from K-12 is so misguided that it necessitates the need for college and the almighty degree. Have you ever thought about how it could be different? Why is it that traditional education is the only service where the customer pays dearly but gets absolutely no say over the product for which they are paying? It is amazing that this is seldom, if ever, questioned. People just blindly agree to this proposition without taking into account the value of their investment. If you wanted to go on a vacation to Italy and the travel agent insisted that going to Germany for double the cost was the better option you would find a new travel agent who could get you a good deal to Italy. And, you would be offended that the travel agent thought they knew best about your vacation. And, the travel agent would shortly be out of business for not addressing the desires of the customer. School is the same way. They are sending you to Germany whether you like it or not. You are completely powerless to modify the curriculum to meet the needs of your child in the way you see fit. You either play ball or get labeled as a rebel or troublemaker. The school administration does not answer to you, you answer to them. If you feel as though your child is getting too much homework and want them to be doing other things, get ready for a call from the school followed by a visit from social services. This should infuriate us but we are too conditioned to accept this to complain. Why aren’t we more involved in designing the education that will make our children prosper in the world in which we live? Are we too stupid, lazy or intimidated to stand up and direct our child’s future? The current system doesn’t promote success in the way we all know it to be. It advocates a watered down, roundabout method of learning a lot of general stuff without piecing it together for the child. Consequently, the child mistakenly believes their education has prepared them to deal with the rest of their life when, in fact, it has created a false sense of security that is quickly wiped away upon leaving the academic world.
School Should Be Completely Different
The goal is for kids to be jumping out of bed to see what is on the docket for the day. A balanced blend (probably imbalanced by most) of physical activity and teaching keeps the kids awake. The two concepts should not be mutually exclusive either. A skilled teacher should be able to deliver a message while in the middle of
an interesting physical activity that they designed. Kids should embrace the idea of competition early on because this is how it is going to be throughout life. A good teacher should be able to find areas where all kids can excel and be the champion of their domain. Get rid of traditional goals and address reality while teaching how to deal one on one with people in a comfortable manner that belies an intricate understanding of how to deal with people. Highly personable, healthy and uniquely positioned in job of choice should be the goal. A hundred kids with the exact same skills does not give anyone a competitive advantage -– a term you hear a lot in many areas of town. Imagine how much a teacher is worth that can deliver a kid who has highly marketable skills, a great backup career plan, advanced knowledge of health and nutrition, and great people skills.
We Need to Priortize 1. Health. 2. Money 3. Social Situation.
One, if not all, of these concepts is generally on your mind during the course of the day. A lot of us haven’t broken it down this way, but a couple seconds of thought should make it an easy concept to digest. If these are the issues that consume us all day then why aren’t we pursuing education that addresses these? Why aren’t

we pursuing opportunities that will prepare us to deal with these three life altering concepts? If you agree that you can’t think of concepts that are more brain and energy intensive and also agree that putting our brainpower towards dealing with these takes maximum priority, then why wouldn’t you agree that the school curriculum has a somewhat misguided goal when it comes to educating the students. Options. Isn’t this what makes life fun and interesting? Unfortunately, it usually takes money to have options. If you want to move out of a job to start something new either you have something lined up or have money to make the transition. If you want to take a safari to Africa it takes money. If you want to tell your boss to shove it, it takes money. Money is the number one thing people dream of having because then the smorgasbord of life is opened up and the adventurous possibilities are endless. With money, your options are increased many fold. Whether it be right or wrong or just an illusion, people believe that having money will improve their life greatly. This is why the vast majority either dream about or take on some sort of entrepreneur venture. They are hoping they can find the pot of gold and have the life they can only fantasize about. Would you still go to college if you knew you could make the same money and have the same career opportunities without it? Take a minute and think about this before reading on.
Probably the thought that went through your head was that you couldn’t have the same financial opportunities without college so the point is moot. The actual goal of the question was to find out if you really feel as though college is a means to a financial end and little more. While most people arduously defend college as a supremely worthwhile venture, if they dissected their true goals regarding college they might have a different feeling about the aforementioned question. My contention is that college is only about furthering your financial situation and little more. The real question is would college be worth $100,000 or anything close if the financial incentive was taken out of it. If you could get the job you wanted without college, would you still spend the big bucks to go through it? Does the college experience have the same sheen without the financial benefit? Would you put the money into college or something like a down payment on a house if college did not offer a financial reward? Isn’t what we remember most fondly about college the social experiences? There must be a way to have that experience without putting us deeply in debt. Although the rest of this manifesto is about schooling before the college years, college was used as the example because it is an elective experience and has a very real price tag that you are constantly evaluating. People claim they value their time and money, but they hardly question one of the biggest experiences
ARTI T NDDISP AY
and expenses of their lives. Have you ever noticed that when college grads are on a news show the only question ever asked is if the college experience led to great career opportunities? The question of whether the college experience made you a better person or enriched your life is a sidenote because the primary purpose of college is to lead to a good career. The question for this discussion is if you had the choice between a traditional K-12 experience and one that focused on financial, social and healthful success which would you choose? If a K-12 school system clearly dictated that their central goal was to make you financially successful, socially skilled and nutritionally knowledgeable would that be better than the traditional K-12? If there were two schools and you knew the “alternative” school virtually guaranteed you financial success would you want to be at that school. Below is an outline of the type of school being discussed.
Here We Go
Kids dedicate the better part of their youth to the institution known as school. Everyone pretends like the curriculum is great and will further their child to great heights. The funny thing is that no one wants to think about what school should really be and therefore the curriculum is not suited for a great end result. School should ultimately be about giving a person unique skills that will help them to attain financial independence REEXPLORE>>page 24 VIEW 4 PAGES OF SALE ITEMS

sports TIME WARNER CABLE SPORTSCHANNEL TO AIR FIVE PANTHER FALL SPORTING EVENTS COVERAGE STARTS SEPT. 23
r e h t n Pa c i t e l h At News
Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will televise five University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sporting events this fall across eastern Wisconsin. The coverage includes two men’s soccer matches, two women’s soccer contests and one volleyball match. Coverage debuts Sept. 23 when the Panther women’s soccer team hosts crosstown-rival Marquette at Engelmann Field. The schedule continues Sept. 28 when the Panther volleyball team hosts Wright State. Then Oct. 8, the men’s soccer team will be on the air when it welcomes Green Bay to Engelmann Field. Finally, the men’s and women’s soccer teams appear in a doubleheader on Oct. 23, with the women facing Green Bay before the men square off with Wisconsin. The coverage is part of an extensive contract between Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and UWM Athletics. The station, which airs on Time Warner Cable systems throughout the eastern part of the state and is available in high definition, will again provide extensive coverage of men’s and women’s basketball this winter, as well as Panther baseball in the spring. Games that air on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel are also available online through the Horizon League Network, part of a 24-game fall sports online package set for the next two-plus months. Meanwhile, Panther men’s soccer coach Kris Kelderman is scheduled to appear on the Dennis Krause Show on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel next week. The 30-minute interview with the second-year Panther head coach will air multiple times, starting Monday at 6 and 10 p.m.

kee Athletics venues including Engelmann Field, Henry Aaron Field, U.S. Cellular Arena and Klotsche Center, as well as web properties, social media, and select radio broadcasts. “It is exciting that we are able to add Colectivo to our Corporate Partnership Program,” Milwaukee Director of Athletics Amanda Braun said. “They are going through a very exciting brand transition and it is great to have their new local brand affiliated with our program. We have been working on this agreement with them for some time and they are a perfect partner for us. Agreements like these are important in our quest to provide additional resources to support our student-athletes.” “UWM is a tremendous asset to our community,” Colectivo Coffee Director of Marketing Scott Schwebel said “Supporting the school and its student athletes while they pursue an education is a wonderful match for our brand and our connection to Milwaukee.”
GRADUATE SCHOOL Considering Your Options If you are planning or considering going to graduate school in the future, there’s a lot to consider: cost, time, loss of sleep. It’s a really big decision and one that takes many people years to decide. In attempt to shed light on the issue, we asked UWM’s Pat Hayes, a doctoral student specialist, and Craig Pierce, director of graduate admissions at Marquette, what it takes to go to get an advanced degree from a Milwaukee university. OMC: What are the general requirements to get into grad school? Pat Hayes: At UWM, a few requirements are common to everyone who applies to Grad School at UWM: a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, an overall GPA at the college level of 2.75 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) and everyone must submit an application form, “reason statement,” official transcript(s) from schools other than UWM and a $45 application fee. Each of the 17 Ph.D. programs and/or approx. 45 masters programs may also have their own requirements. Departments are free to make additional (i.e. GRE exam, letters of recommendation, coursework, portfolio) or higher (i.e. 3.0 GPA) requirements. Craig Pierce: At Marquette we have 19 Ph.D. programs and 37 master’s-degree programs. The admissions requirements can vary from one program to another, but in general the following are required: a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 3.0 or higher GPA in undergraduate work. Some departments require letters of recommendation, the results of a standardized test like the GRE, GMAT, or MAT, a resume or curriculum vita, statement of purpose, an example of scholarly writing and a personal interview. OMC: Why should someone consider grad school? PH: I think the why of graduate school is as varied as the students, and the many degree programs available. It is a wonderful way to stay current in a chosen field of study. Sometimes a graduate with a master’s degree or Ph.D. will get a promotion or
BACK TO SCHOOL COLLEGE FALL 2013
a raise at a position he/she already holds (teaching, nursing, and social work). Some disciplines train students for specific licenses, like school psychologist. Many students come back to change fields to become more professional and marketable. There are others who enjoy studying and learning so much that the degree itself is secondary. Many Ph.D.’s want to teach at the college level or perform research as a career. All in all, I’d say that most students who receive a masters or Ph.D. degree realize both professional and personal gains which continue throughout their lifetimes. CP: There are a variety of reasons that someone might consider pursuing a graduate degree. Such a degree may help with career advancement or with finding employment is a given field. Employees with graduate degrees typically earn more than those possessing only undergraduate degrees. And in some fields, specifically teaching at the college or university level, a doctoral degree is usually a requirement. OMC: In your opinion, what does it really “take” to make it in grad school? PH: The main ingredient for success in graduate school is a personal quality: commitment. Most of our students are “adult” (older than the average grad student) students with full time jobs, families and many other obligations. The graduate degree is a major commitment and requires steady and continuous effort. It is easier to make such a commitment if the student really enjoys the discipline he or she has chosen. For the Ph.D. students, another major factor is the wise choice of a major professor. The student needs a mentor who will be available and reliable. A professor with similar interests and someone the student can “get along with” over the years, doctoral student specialist and customer service supervisor. CP: In order to complete a graduate degree, a student must have the appropriate academic preparation. At a minimum, this means outstanding performance at the undergraduate or master’s degree level. However, the student must also have the focus, drive and perseverance to perform at a high level for a sustained period of time. And at the doctoral level, students must have a desire to produce new knowledge through original research.

ABOUT KING SOLOMON Formed in 1998, King Solomon is known as the standard for Reggae music in the region. Their infectious blend of Roots Reggae and Dancehall has been described as a soulful vibe with a powerhouse punch to the heart. Since it’s conception, the band has developed an incredible following while headlining major festivals such as Summerfest (Milw), Riversplash (Milw), Trempealeau Reggae Sunsplash (Lacrosse Area), Rockford (IL) on the Water front, and the Ya Maka My Weekend Reggae Festival (Rock Island, IL) to name a few. This talented group of musicians have opened for such artist as The Wailers, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Maxi Priest, Culture, Yellow man, Third World and Matisyahu to name a few. Along with the major festivals King Solomon has headlined, the band has also released several CDs. As a mainstay on the Southeastern Wisconsin music scene for over a dozen years, King Solomon has
managed to create a reggae music subculture that has raised consciousness and awareness to reggae music, at least in the Milwaukee area. DJs, singers, musicians, and music lovers in the area have all embraced reggae music. The band can’t take all the credit for Milwaukee’s thriving reggae music scene, but with a decade of shows in the area and a reputation that is second to none, their musical influence and impact speaks for itself. What was once a quiet and dormant reggae music scene is now thriving and alive with popular Caribbean cultured events, Reggae music beach festivals, and Reggae music flavored events. One would be hard pressed to find another band in the region with this much impact and credentials. In 2009 King Solomon welcomed the return of their original front JD Rankin. Hailing from Ochos Rios Jamaica, JD brings to King Solomon the authenticity and electric charisma that completes this veteran line up.

The Truth Unmasked:
The Story Behind the Halloween Mask by Marjorie Dorfman
It is not known who invented masks, but records indicate that they were known to many ancient cultures. The first masks date back to primitive times and represented animals because hunting was such an important aspect of life. The earliest mask ever found came from a cave drawing in Southern France dated approximately 20,000 BC, which depicts a human masked in deerskin and antlers. During the Stone Age, “disguise masks” were utilized to stalk prey and later to house the slain animal’s spirit in the hope that it would cosmically understand why it ended up as Sunday dinner. Masks have been designed in many ways over the course of history, ranging from the crude “false face” held by a handle to complete head coverings with movable parts. Across the centuries, a myriad of different indigenous materials have been used. Some of these include: metal, shells, feathers, ivory, clay, stone, horn, paper and even corn husks. They were usually worn with a costume, which completed the identity represented by the mask. Anthropomorphic masks depict human features while those representing animals are called theriomorphic. In traditional societies, masks were sacred objects used for ancestor worship, healing and fertility rites. Symbolic masks were worn during ceremonies portraying gods, animals and spirits. With the advent of classic drama in ancient Greece, theater masks were introduced via the 6th century BC poet, Thespis, who is considered to be the originator of theatrical tragedy. These masks were often constructed of painted canvas and fitted at the mouth where a small megaphone was inserted for amplification of the actor’s voice. Early agricultural societies used masks for harvest and fertility rituals. The Iroquois utilized cornhusks at harvest time to give thanks for and insure future abundance of indigenous crops. To this day, the Hopi and Zuni tribes of the American Southwest still perform masked fertility rites. Elaborate ceremonies replete with masked dancers representing all the elements of nature are designed to assure fertility inside the teepees and outside, all along the fields of maize and other crops. The Japanese Theater of later years
used masks to represent emotions and characters. Since the 14th century, the No drama of Japan has remained a significant aspect of national life. There are more than 125 varieties of No masks, all of which are rigidly traditional and classified into five general types: old (male or female), gods and goddesses (young or old), devils and goblins (all past the age of consent). Constructed of wood with a coating of plaster, these masks are lacquered, gilded and exquisitely carved by highly respected artists known as tenka-ichi, (the first under heaven). Colors are traditional. White characterizes a corrupt ruler while red signifies a righteous man. Black is always worn by the villain (who may or may not be a corrupt ruler. In that case, shouldn’t he then wear black and white? Or is the issue merely a matter of gray? Only their dressmakers know for sure). In ancient cultures, masks were often worn to deter demons that were blamed for natural disasters beyond the realm of ancient understanding. They were meant to frighten, even though by all accounts, the concept of the demons themselves were more terrifying than any mask could ever hope to be. This belief dates back to the Celtic fire festival of Samhain, which marked a day in the year (October 31st) when disembodied spirits returned to earth to collect monies due, return overdue library books and find bodies to possess. This festival heralds the end of the year (harvest) and the advent of winter. Divination concerns new beginnings and the dissolution of the past. Everything about Samhain is black for black is the color of winter and the underworld (and in some cases, the color of my true love’s hair). After the Romans conquered the Celtic lands, they combined two of their own festivals with Samhain. (In this case, when not in Rome, do as the Romans don’t do.) The first of these festivals, Feralia, fell in late October and commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was to honor the goddess, Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees. Her symbol was the apple and hence, the tradition of bobbing for apples on All Hallow’s Eve. Even after Samhain had merged with Halloween because it had been too potent
to be banned by the forces of early Christianity, Europeans felt uneasy at this time of year. They believed the only way to avoid spirits when they left their houses was to wear masks. To avoid contact meant not to be recognized which in turn, signified disguise. All fires were extinguished as town dwellers disguised in masks and costumes did their best to ward off the encroaching spirits. It was probably hoped that they (the demon spirits) would fall off the sides of the flat earth, a myth soon to be dispelled by a most impetuous Italian named Columbus. Despite the fact that they are often grotesque, festival masks, such as those worn on Halloween, Mardi Gras or at masked balls are meant to amuse and release all inhibition. All demons be damned when it comes time to dance! The disguise is hoped to create confusion or anonymity, resulting in humorous and harmless diversion. The preservation or disposal of masks is a matter of tradition. Some are passed from generation to generation, like family silver, through clans, special societies and grateful and ungrateful in-laws. Burning after use in only one specific ceremony sometimes destroys others. The collecting of masks and appreciation of them as unique objets d’art has only occurred since the end of the 19th century. Most have been obtained through archaeological excavations. And so, my friends, if you are considering a disguise for Halloween, approach the matter with a new perspective this year. A mask is a symbol of continuity, of history. It may have been worn by many before you and may be worn by many long after your remains are transported to the other side of the sod. Still, you don’t want anyone to run from you because your face is too horrible to look upon. Simple is best. Take a lesson from the Lone Ranger of yesteryear whose black mask covered only part of his face. To this day, no one knows what he really looks like, that is, of course besides Tonto and his faithful steed, Silver. Last I heard Tonto was dead and the horse simply wasn’t talking. To find more stoies like this please visit http://www.cultureschlockonline.com/.
Why do people don masks on All Hallow’s Eve? Are they trying to hide from someone or something or is it all merely in fun? Did the Lone Ranger hoard a dark secret behind his famous black mask? If so, how come his horse, Silver, never had to wear one? Find out the colorful truth and read on, that is, if you dare to defy the spirits of Halloween.

EXERCISING OUTSIDE DOESN’T HAVE TO END WHEN THE FIRST LEAF DROPS
The first day of fall is here. Saturday, Sept. 22 marked the autumnal equinox and the official end to a sweltering summer. From the crisp, cool air to the brilliantly-colored leaves, this is one of my favorite seasons to be active outdoors. Whether you spent the summer scaling mountains or doing laps in your gym’s outdoor pool, exercising outside doesn’t have to end when the first leaf drops. In fact, fall is a great time to harvest a new routine to re-energize your workout. Consider the following tips and get motivated! Enjoy the foliage. Exercising outside feels like a lot less work, especially if you’re doing something you enjoy. Relish the cooler weather and take advantage of outdoor adventures before the winter rolls in. Research park trails nearby to enjoy a hike or bike ride amid fall’s colorful foliage. Even apple picking or pumpkin gathering with your kids is a fun activity that is sure to burn calories. Layer up. The change in season brings about a change in climate. Depending on where you live, temperatures could gradually decrease or drastically dip over the next month. Keep this in mind as you plan outdoor activities and invest in breathable, moisturewicking clothing. Though you may feel chilly at first, your body will quickly warm up once your blood starts pumping so you don’t want to overdress either. For those cold morning runs, a hat will help insult your head where you lose the most heat. Review this post from SparkPeople on how to layer effectively.
Certified 5K run/walk on the UWM campus and in Upper Lake Park.
Be safe. Shorter days bring dark mornings and evenings, but this shouldn’t deter you from an outdoor exercise regime. Just be smart about it; wear reflective workout clothes and carry a flashlight to illuminate your path. Bike riders should invest in headlights and blinking tail lights and stay clear of heavy traffic roads. All early morning or evening exercisers should opt for designated paths or head to the local school track. Workout at home. Now that the days feel shorter and the holiday season is looming, fitting fitness into your daily routine may feel impossible. But remember, even 15 or 20 minutes is enough time to get in a quick workout -- think living-room aerobics or a quick dash around the neighborhood. Be prepared for those fleeting moments of free time with fitness DVDs or better yet, hit up Hulu for free workout tutorials on Exercise TV. Get the right gear. For the most part, you can challenge your muscles with your own body weight and avoid all that specialty, super-expensive equipment advertised on TV. However, some items are helpful to your results, like hand weights or resistance bands. Shop online for discounts at FreeShipping.org, where you can get a coupon code for 20percent off at Champion through Oct. 9. Freeze that gym membership. If you don’t have time to get to the gym or you simply rather spend more time outdoors, consider freezing your gym membership for a couple of months. Though you’ll be charged a small monthly fee to retain the membership, you could save up to 90-percent of the regular monthly charge. Though some people opt to cancel, you could wind up paying pesky initiation fees once you’re ready to sign up again. Savor fall produce for less. Grocery stores and farmers’ markets will be full of fall’s freshest produce includCertified 5K run/walk on the UWM ing apples, figs, pears, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and winter squash. Buy a bike. According to The Best Time to Buy Guide, new bicycle models are released in September and dealers slash prices because they don’t want old models haunting their showrooms. Bike manufacturers make updates to new models, so educate yourself on those changes. Sometimes the updates are minimal or limited to design tweaks, making the older models a super smart buy.

health Good News For
COFFEE LOVERS
Drinking up to six cups a day of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee daily won’t shorten your life span, a new study shows.
In fact, coffee might even help the heart, especially for women, the researchers found. “Our results suggest that long-term, regular coffee consumption does not increase the risk of death and probably has several beneficial effects on health,” said lead researcher Dr. Esther Lopez-Garcia, assistant professor of preventive medicine at the Autonoma University in Madrid, Spain. Her team published its findings in the June 17 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Lopez-Garcia stressed that the findings may only hold true only for healthy folk. “People with any disease or condition should ask their doctor about their risk, because caffeine still has an acute effect on short-term increase of blood pressure,” she said. In the study, the Spanish team looked at the relationships between coffee drinking and the risks of dying from heart disease, cancer, or any cause in almost 42,000 men who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and more than 84,000 women who had participated in the Nurses’ Health Study. At the study start, all participants were free of heart disease and cancer. The participants completed questionnaires every two to four years, including information about their coffee drinking, other dietary habits, smoking and health conditions. The research team looked at the frequency of death from any cause, death due to heart disease, and death due to cancer among people with different coffee-drinking habits, comparing them to those who didn’t drink the brew. They also controlled for other risk factors, including diet, smoking and body size. The researchers found that women who drank two or three cups of caffeinated coffee daily had a 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease during the follow-up (from 1980 to 2004) than non-drinkers. Women also had an 18 percent lower death risk from a cause other than cancer or heart disease compared with non-coffee drinkers. For men, drinking two to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily was a “wash” -- not associated with either an increased or a decreased risk of death during the follow up, from 1986 to 2004. The lower death rate was mainly due to a lower risk for heart disease deaths, the researchers found, while no link was discovered for coffee drinking and cancer deaths. The relationship did not seem to be directly related to caffeine, according to the researchers, since those who drank decaf also had a lower death rate than those who didn’t drink either kind of coffee. In the past, studies have come up with mixed results on the health effects of coffee, with some finding coffee increased the risk of death and others not. More recently, research has found coffee drinking linked with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers, and preventing the development of cardiovascular disease, Lopez-Garcia said. The strength of her current study, she said, includes the large number of participants and long follow-up period. While the study is interesting, it does have its shortcomings, said Dr. Peter Galier, an internal medicine specialist, former chief of staff at Santa Monica UCLA and Orthopedic Hospital and associate professor of medicine at the University of California Los Angeles’ David Geffen School of Medicine.
Self-reporting is one shortcoming, he said, because people may have under- or over-reported their coffee consumption, for instance. “I think what this study tells us is not so much that coffee is the answer to everything,” he said. But, rather, that some compounds, such as the antioxidants found in coffee, may be healthy. Galier’s advice for consumers: “I would tell them to weigh the subjective risk of their coffee consumption,” he said. For instance, “if they love coffee, but it makes them jittery, and they can’t sleep, the need to adjust it,” he said. “Look at your symptoms,” he tells patients. “If decaf is no problem, I wouldn’t put a limit on that.” The research was funded by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

HOW TO
Organize
Your DORM
or Apartment
College apartments and dorm rooms are famous for being ridiculously small. With a little creativity, and planning, you can find ways to make more room for yourself-and your stuff. Most of you don’t have things that serves only one function and takes up more space than needed. Sure, a plug-in grilled cheese maker seems cool, but it takes up space and can only do one thing. Make sure that each item you need has more than one function. When planning out your space having a speaker system for your iPod that charges it at the same time helps keep your space efficient. Share with your roommates like having a printer that prints but also scans and copies that you can all use. Have the same blanket that you use to take out for sporting events as your bed cover as well. You spend alot of money for your small space and you should enjoy it. Living in a chaos is less productive for you and your roomates. Think of the things you’ll really need at any time and how often you use them. True, you may love to burn CDs with your favorite music. Instead of using CDs and DVD for your needed computer files, downsize with a simple zipdrive. If you must have blank CDs, reduce them to only a handful and keep all computer “needs” in one container. Sharing with your roommates is key. Do you really need two printers? Two minifridges? Coffee makers? Sometimes this can get you into disputs over decaf or regular coffee, that was my pizza. Communication is crazy important when maximizing space to help make you and your roomates space more organized and efficient. Most likely, you and your roommate can make things work out by sharing some of the most important stuff. Empty spaces can be used as decorative storage. Get rid of the old school plastic bins that end up piled in the corner. Now adays, you can go and pick up storage bins that have colorful style and function. Think of using them as style features. Use a small box to store remotes and magazines on your coffee table. A trunk can be a great coffee or side table. Your bed takes up a ton of space and has a great amount of space to fill underneath. In the back where you can’t reach as easy put your summer clothes, and other things you need but use infrequently. Keeping things organized as often as you can will bring peace to your state of mind. Keeping a space organized and clean will actually make your small dorm or apartment seem much larger.
You spend alot of money for your small space and you should enjoy it. Living in a chaos is less productive for you and your roomates.

A GOOD CREDIT SCORE
Can Go A Long Way In This World
In today’s world, with all the resources available to credit card and other lending services, your credit history is very important. Every time you make a late payment or lose a small claims judgment, your credit score is affected. Your score is affected by your income, how many credit cards you possess and even how many times an outside company checks your credit. If you ever go into purchase a car or apply for a home loan, your credit history will be one of the biggest factors in determining, not only if you get the loan, but what the interest rate and financing terms will be. Chances are you have no idea of what your credit score is or even how to go about finding it. There are several companies that provide credit reporting, but the quickest way to get your credit report is to apply for a credit card and ask for a very high limit. After you are turned down, the company is required to show you your credit report as the explanation for why you were turned down. Although this may take days, even weeks, it is worth knowing what your credit history looks like. Once you have the credit report in your hands, go through and make sure that all of the information is correct. Information regarding late payments are the reasons your score could be low. You can generally determine your credit score using the following guidelines. Anything over 800 is pretty much flawless. If you are in this range, you can demand the best interest rates on pretty much any deal. If you are between 700-800, you’re in good shape. This probably means a couple of very small things are working against you like a very old late payment or low income. But, you are still in position to demand a good interest rate. If you are between 600-700, you are in the next tier of credit. If you have a good income record, this will probably outweigh the lower score, but lenders will not be bending over backwards to give you a great deal. If you are between 500-600, you are not in good shape. Either you will be taking a very unfriendly interest rate or you should work on cleaning up your credit before applying. Anything below 500 and you are in rough shape. You will be offered the double-digit interest rates, lots of extra fees and generally get the bottom end treatment. The good news is that you can clean up your credit with a little patience and some tenacity. The first thing you may want to do is get a few different credit reports since they all could have slightly different information. Then, you must contact the people who you still owe money or have an unfavorable mark on your record. If you still owe them money, your best bet is to negotiate a settlement where you offer them a certain percentage of the original amount. If you can have them agree to do this, then you need to ask them to send a letter to the credit agency saying the whole thing was a mistake. Although, it may be difficult to muster up the courage to ask for this, it will be the quickest way to get your credit score turned around. Many people will agree to do this because they are interested in getting their money. If you are working with a large company like the phone company, it may be difficult to make this happen, but it can’t hurt to try. It’s a good idea for anyone to obtain their credit report. There could be untrue information on it that is following you around like the plague. Get it, look it over and clean it up.

DISC GOLF Milwaukee County was introduced to disc golf in 1981 at Brown Deer Park. Brown Deer Park is a very spacious, wooded, and scenic park. The disc golf course took advantage of all the natural beauty the park had to offer. There were very few people who had heard of disc golf in the early 80’s and even fewer who actually played. However there was a small group of people who formed a club called the Milwaukee Breeze. They were die hard players who also had an interest in keeping the course beautiful. In 1992 the Greater Milwaukee Open came to town and needed to expand the ball golf area into the disc golf area. This meant disc golf had to go. Where could it go? Dretzka Park was the answer. It was perfect because it had plenty of trees open space, and very little use. A lot of disc golfers were heart broken that their beloved Brown Deer Disc golf course was gone. IT was the end of an era for disc golf and it was a new beginning at the same time. Dretzka had endless possibilities but the development of the course was slow. In 1995, some disc golfers formed a new club
22 BACK TO SCHOOL COLLEGE FALL 2013
called the Great Lakes Disc Golf Club (GLDGC). Their purpose was to improve the course, teach the rules of the game, and to get more people interested in disc golf. At its peak, the Breeze had about 30 members. The GLGDC is nearing 250 members. Club board member, Mark Peterson is the course pro at Dretzka and is the driving force behind all of the course improvements. He has raised thousands of dollars from running local tournaments and a league on Tuesday nights. This league has sponsored concrete tee pads, new tee signs, and many alternate basket locations. The number of people playing Brown Deer was roughly one thousand per year. Now the club can estimate that we have nearly one thousand people playing Dretzka Park every week during the summer months. The club has done whatever it takes for years but now they are ready to let Milwaukee County take over. Instead of it remaining free, it will be a pay to play course. Most people do not realize that Dretzka has been cared for by volunteers since 1992. Milwaukee County would like to open new courses by making them all pay to play. Most avid disc golfers would be happy to pay for the chance to get new disc golf courses. However, most casual disc golfers (people who do not play on a regular basis) do not approve of this idea. The club members think it is really the best way to go so it can make the give the sport more credibility and not just appear to be a kid’s hobby. For more information If you are interested in finding out more about disc golf you can start on the internet by visiting a few important sites. www.lifetimediscsports.com www.pgda.com www.widiscsports.com www.discraft.com You can also contact Discraft Team Member, Terry Miller at 414.803.3307 or terry@lifetimediscsports.com
WHERE TO PLAY
The Milwaukee Metro area has a variety of courses for you to check out: Dretzka Park - Near 124th and Brown Deer Road this course is considered by most the nicest course in the area. The constant tender loving care from the GLDGC has seen this course develop with two sets of tee pads and at least three different pin positions for all 18 holes. As an erosion control measure, the course is usually closed during the wet months of March and April. Milwaukee County Sports Complex - This will be the newest course coming to the area in the Spring of 2005. 18 holes will provide a wide but fair challenge for anyone’s game. Franklin and the rest of the south side of Milwaukee of been in dire need of a disc golf course and now they will finally have one. There will even be a dedicated disc golf pro shop on site which will offer all of the latest discs and accessories. Lime Kiln Park - This beautiful 9 hole course is located at the historic Lime Kiln Park in Grafton. Updates coming to this course include new tee pads and tee signs. Also, all 9 holes have multiple pin locations which change regularly. If you have the urge the play this 9 hole course can be completed in under 45 minutes - just in time to grab lunch and get back to the office. Sussex Village Park - Sussex’ largest park became the home of an 18 hole course in 2003. Elevation comes to play on nearly every hole of this fundamentally challenging course. Make sure you are not trying to play during the weekend of Lion’s Daze because the course is closed due to the enormous carnival. Valley View Park - Par 3 golf courses are even found in the world of disc golf. Located off Small Road in New Berlin you will find this course completely inundated with kids and newer players. There are 18 holes but all of the holes are very simple in design and challenge. Golfers have always said that “birdies mean fun” so get out to Valley View and have plenty of fun. Spassland Park - With a perfect Germantown suburb location this course should be filled with families and young children. Again using the par 3 mentality, this course will not challenge an advanced level player but it will provide a free activity to any child wishing to walk over to the park. Located just behind County Line school, look for disc golf to be played during recess but also incorporated into the physical education curriculum. Heritage Trails County Park - Slinger recently added this 18 hole course near Hwy 164 and Hwy E. The course has some long holes with many elevation changes. In the following years more trees will be planted to increase the difficulty of the course. It is a very beautiful park which makes the $4 green fee very reasonable. Currently you can get discs at many Play It Again stores. You can also buy discs on the East Side at Arts Smart Dart Mart. By summertime people will be able to play the Franklin disc golf course and visit a disc sports pro shop right there onsite. It will be a store that offers everything including tips from a Discraft sponsored professional, Terry Miller.
product reviews Coreldraw Graphics Suite X6 www.corel.com Coreldraw is the often overlooked graphics tool by designers. The software package is reasonably priced ($499.00 MSRP) and is loaded with features. Coreldraw Graphics Suite X6 comprises seven parts, all told. Within the suite, you’ll find two major applications—the namesake CorelDRAW, a vector and illustration program, and Photo-Paint for image editing— and a handful of utilities: bitmap converter PowerTrace, site designing tool Website Creator, screen-capture utility Capture, full-screen browser utility Connect, and an export plug-in utility called PhotoZoom Pro 2. Coreldraw Coreldraw, the main component of this package, offers a more intuitive approach than its Adobe competitors. The learning curve is much less steep while still offering a multitude of professional design tools. The interface is friendly and much less intimidating than its competition making design a pain free experience. The latest version supports multi-core and 64 bit machines so it is faster and more responsive. One downside is that it is only on the Windows platform. For artists who are less concerned with text, the vector drawing program includes a few new shaping tools as well that “smear,” “twirl,” “attract,” and “repel,” objects or points on lines to transform their shapes. Photopaint Photopaint is Corel’s answer to Adobe Photoshop. While not as comprehensive as the Adobe alternative, it has many similar features and can certainly do the trick for many applications. One new cool feature is called smart carver. The smart carver lets you select an object in an image and remove it, then tighten up the space left behind and patch up the area formerly covered by the object with the right background. It’s a real wizard of a tool, but certainly not the first of its kind, similar to Photoshop’s “content-aware fill.” Conclusion Overall, Coreldraw X6 is a very nice product at a very attractive price. Coreldraw is a suitable alternative to Adobe Illustrator and is probably easier to use. Corel doesn’t really have a product to rival Adobe Indesign so you would still need that if multi-page design was your business. Corel doesn’t get the hype that Adobe does, but their flagship product Coreldraw has amazing capabiities.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 www.samsung.com
The newest Samsung notepad has a lot to like about it. It looks and feels very reminiscent of the Galaxy S3 cell phone and is very light. The 8” screen is vibrant with the colors and text very appealing. Samsung uses Smart Stay technology to determine if your eyes are watching the screen. If the pad feels you are not watching it will shut it off to save battery. A feature that makes this pad unique is the S-Pen. This pen allows you to draw and make notes using a pen directly on to the tablet. This feature is unique to the Galaxy 8 and has been highly touted by their users. The rear facing camera is 5 megapixel and does a nice job of taking pictures. The Note 8.0 comes with the usual apps and runs on the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system. You can also use the pad as a remote for the tv. All and all, this is a very nice unit that is comfortable to hold, holds a long charge and has an appealing interface.

The Art of the Job Interview If you are actively seeking an entry level, mid-level or decent paying part time job, you might want to consider changing your strategy. Today’s marketplace has changed considerably from the late 90s when employers were desperate for working bodies. Nowadays, Human Resource Managers can pick and choose whom they want from an abundance of able candidates. You probably need to be a bit more aggressive and start thinking outside of the box. What makes you different? This is the question you should ponder long and hard until you absolutely know what the answer is. Remember, that first impression is everything. Although painfully obvious, many people go to job interviews in a manner that won’t get them a call back, never mind the job. Why even bother if you are not going to give yourself a chance. The main things that will make you different are your appearance, your clothing and your personality. Remember, this is more like a one act play than a marathon. You need to fully dazzle them in about 15 minutes. Also, if you are able to engage the interviewer in a short conversation outside the context of work, it can be very useful to show your personal side. Make sure you are well groomed you go in for an interview. People, even Human
24 BACK TO SCHOOL COLLEGE FALL 2013
Resource Managers, are greatly affected by image. Why wait in line? Employers try to discourage it, but calling instead of writing can get you in the door faster if you catch the person in the right mood. Employers are human too and are subject to their emotions. Although this strategy can backfire, it has landed many a job hunter a job. If you want to soften the blow when they answer the phone, pretend like you didn’t know there was a job opening and you were just calling on the off chance something was available. Getting in first improves the chances greatly and some people will see it as a positive quality. Hire your friend with the good voice to be your agent. You may benefit from using a good agent. There is nothing more appealing than a great phone voice. By hiring your friend to act as your agent, you get many benefits. First, they will be able to get through to the right person easier. Second, it looks like your serious about getting a job. Third, their personality gets associated with yours and leaves a great impression. Anyone can act as your headhunter. Why not use a friend who everyone agrees has a shiny personality. Just remember that your friend should be well versed in case the employer asks
them questions. Don’t bring ugly resume. The resume needs to be in good shape. This means no typos, nice paper, concise but not bare, and pertinent work history details. Unless your applying for a relatively intense job, the interviewer will be judging you much more than the resume, but a clean looking piece of nice paper can do wonders to enhance your appearance. Keep it simple, but keep it neat and clean. Don’t be undersold. This is an art. How do you get the employer to up their offer without irritating them? The best way to do this is by making sure your image is in full gear. Have you ever noticed how some people look like they make more money than others? You want to be one of them. The employer’s perception of you is everything when they make their offer. Many times they are basing it on what they think you will take. Be sure to talk up any experience that is relevant to your new position. Don’t let them convince you that your worth is lower than it is. You have to make it very hard to lowball you because your persona screams money. Once you are hired it is many times harder to negotiate a raise than it is when you are interviewing.
in a manner that is appealing to them. There are probably a lot of people who will turn a deaf ear to the rest of the story because they don’t like this premise. This very straight forward look at the purpose of school, for some reason, scares most people. It seems to really strike an insecure chord because it is much too practical and realistic to be digestible by the average humanoid. There should be no greater goal than preparing the student to become the money maker. That isn’t to say that skills such as psychology, history and social studies shouldn’t be taught. Because the skills needed to make the student a financial success are vast, the student will inevitably receive the well rounded education that almost everyone mistakenly believes should be the goal of school. School should never be equated with education or learning. It should simply be a means to a great career and then the individual can decide in which way they want to further their true learning once they have the money issue out of their way. How many people do you know that can’t sleep at night because they feel like their education is not well rounded enough? Probably none. Conversely, how many people do you know that can’t sleep at night because they are afraid they won’t have enough money to pay the bills or can’t stand the job they are at? This sounds like heresy to most, but the question is why? People love to learn, but the majority loathe school. The reason has little to do with anyone’s efforts. The reason has to do with the model and the goal. The model of school is one of drudgery and redundancy with the focus on material that is not applicable to the goal of money making. This insane goal of trying to create the “well rounded” individual does not lead to a great outcome for most. The high school graduate with absolutely no high paying job skills would gladly trade it all for one skill that would pay well and yield independence from the parents, friends and any other aspect of the world that is looking at them with the “what are you going to do now” eyes. The offshoot of this goal would be a much happier and more well rounded child who is excited to learn because they can see how everything they are learning is going to be applicable in the real world in which they live. We have to lift the veil of the “well rounded” child model in favor of the “well prepared” child who will have unique, highly marketable skills in the workplace and also priorities that are more in line with reality. They can become well rounded as they are backpacking through Europe on their six week paid vacation from the job they can’t wait to get back to.
finance DEALING WITH
MONEY
MANY YOUNG PEOPLE GETTING THEIR FIRST TASTE OF MONEY WANT TO REWARD THEMSELVES BY MAKING BAD INVESTMENTS After graduation, you dream about getting a high paying job, having your own money to spend, purchasing a new car, getting your own apartment or even buying a house. The big problem most college graduates face is getting started and making wise decisions. Success is where preparation meets opportunity. Being successful is easier said than done. Many young people getting their first taste of money want to reward themselves by making bad investments. A new sports car is one of the most common bad purchases to young Americans that start their first career, which provides them with a little more money. Another frequent mistake is getting credit cards. The feeling of independence and accomplishment overcomes us, pre-spending money gets most young adults in thousands of dollars into debt. Your whole college life is all about budgeting your money to afford the cheapest thing in life. Now you want to become the high roller you always dreamed of. Most of us spend at least 10 percent more than we make. Here are some helpful tips to be wise with your money. Research Options. Many banks and financial advisors offer different programs for college graduates. Pay Cash! This is the easiest way to keep you out of debt. No credit cards. If you
don’t have the funds, don’t buy it. Your credit score means everything when taking out a loan when making big purchases. Purchase a Smart Car. Fast expensive cars that cost more money in gas than your actual payment can prevent you from the more important investments. Unlike a home, the minute you purchase a car it goes down in value. Save for a house. Purchasing a home is the best investment you can make. You could have the potential to almost double your homes worth within 10 years. Carpool. With gas prices almost tripling in the past few months, you can cut your gas money in half by finding a co-worker to travel to work with. Surf the net. There are hundreds of sites that can tell you who is offering the best price for the purchase you would like to make. Coupon Clip. This is not just for senior. Make sure you go through all your mail and newspapers for coupons, and sale items. Take advantage of the double coupon days from the grocery stores and always sign up for the advantage cards they offer.
