Editor’s Note I sincerely hope you all had a successful kick off to the holiday season. I have been having the best time decorating and trying out new recipes for the upcoming big family festivities. What a wonderful November we had, and as the colder weather kicks in we all tend to stay in and lose some of our regular workout routines. We keep working on. I also think most of us are clinging desperately to the last of the mild temperatures. My kids seem to be catching colds so I hope you are taking precautions to prevent a cold from catching you. I know most of you know this but I can’t stress how much it really helps, “Wash your hands often! And keep them away from your nose, mouth, and eyes!” During the flu season I’m hyper aware of surfaces that harbor germs and you should be too. Of course you can’t help it when others cough or sneeze on you when you’re out shopping or at the post office! We have an excellent issue this month! We have our annual healthy gift guide as well as great articles to help you cope with all the holiday and winter stress. For our lovely senior readers, we once again have great articles on moving. I hope everyone will enjoy the holiday season and don’t over indulge on too many sweets or other fine holiday goodies. See you in 2014! -Amanda Lewis

January 2014 Edition Preview - Special New Years Start to A Healthier Life
Finding Healthy Changes
IN THE AMERICAN DIET By Arlene Becker It seems that Americans are either continuing to have diets that are not the healthiest or they are making concerted efforts to eat as healthy a diet as possible. Thus many people are not only trying to eat organic foods, but are actually trying diets like a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, whole foods, or one of the latest diets, the Paleo diet, named after what is felt was the diet of Paleolithic Man. Many adherents of these diets actually feel they are healthy ways of life. Two food experts, Sarah Dusseau, healthy food chef and coordinator of Elite Sports Clubs’ Fit Food Trainer food program, and the Elite Sports Clubs’ dietitian Rita Larsen, RD, CD, who works with families on healthy eating, gave their expert advice on healthy eating and special diets. Larsen commented, “Unfortunately our American diet is still too high in sugars, fats, and salt. Often our portion sizes are also too large. While obesity is on the rise for all age groups, most professionals feel that the change that needs to be made is that of ‘planning’ for adequate intake throughout the day without overeating.” Larsen gave some examples of good food planning, “The best diet for active adults and children is adequate intake of calories that will support our activities without being more than that. Useful foods for our normal day are simple foods for breakfast such as, milk, fruit, eggs, and granola. Lunch should be simple carbohydrates, with more fruits and vegetables, and some protein such as simple lean meats and cheese. Dinner, on the other hand, can be more of the comfort foods you like, also, in the right proportions. Balancing out each meal between carbohydrates and protein is a good idea. Snacks between meals, can give little amounts of energy boosts without unnecessary calories.” She observed that “most nutrition experts will also recommend eating natural foods instead of packaged and processed foods. It is best for digestion if foods do not contain additives that may take a while to be processed through the body. Many healthy eaters today are choosing their foods from farmer’s markets, natural food stores, and from farms that do not use pesticides.” -see full story in January’s edition.

JAMES “My stay at ManorCare Health Services – Pewaukee was great. I came in for rehabilitation after a traumatic injury. The staff was well trained, organized and worked hard to attend to my needs – both physically and mentally. They understood my needs and provided the care necessary while maintaining my dignity. The facility was clean and the entire staff was accommodating 24-hours a day. The rehabilitation staff gave me the necessary ‘push’ to attain improvement of my injuries.

KEEPING YOUR AGING LOVED ONES
& Beyond
“The holidays are a great time to really observe and see how mom and dad are doing.”
Since many families are gathering for the holidays, local senior care experts are encouraging adult children to consider addressing any physical changes that may have occurred in their senior loved ones – changes that may indicate they need assistance. “The holidays are a great time to really observe and see how mom and dad are doing,” said Herb Beighley, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care® office serving North Milwaukee County. “Even if you’re met with some resistance when gently confronting a loved one about potential issues you may have observed during your visit, it is in both your and your loved one’s best interest to find a solution that can help keep him or her safe and independent at home.” Beighley recommends reflecting on the following signs that could threaten your loved one’s independence. • Pain. Does your mother now pull up a stool by the sink to peel the potatoes? Does she wince in pain when she bends down? If you noticed any red flags, gently ask her if everything is alright. Even if she tries to pretend she’s managing fine, consider helping her make a doctor’s appointment “just to be sure.” • Memory. Did your father have trouble recalling events from earlier in the day? Has he told you the same story over and over? You may want to keep a list of concerns to bring up with his primary care physician. • Depression. If you saw any hints of irritability, sadness or sleep difficulties, these could be signs of depression. Depression can be a problem for seniors and should be checked out by a doctor or mental health care professional if concerns exist. • Social Engagement. Ask your mother to tell you about her friends. Social seniors generally have a healthier and more optimistic outlook on life. If she doesn’t have a strong social network, look into community activities that she may enjoy. Be sure to address any concerns about mobility with your senior’s physician. • Safety. If your father has more difficulty walking, make sure he has a cane, walker or the proper support; remove throw rugs or other potential tripping hazards; and look into installing grab bars and no-slip strips where needed. • Housekeeping: As seniors experience declining health, they may have more trouble keeping up with the housework. If you noticed the house looked more unkempt than usual, consider senior care services that include light housekeeping. • Medication; Did you notice if your senior loved one is taking his or her prescribed medications at the appropriate time (e.g. mealtime or before bed) and if the pill box was organized? If he or she is not keeping a reliable medication schedule, you may want to look into home care services that offer medication reminders. EYE SAFETY TIPS
1. Make safety the top item on your gift list.
Choose age- and skill-appropriate toys and games without sharp or protruding parts or projectiles. Think twice about indulging a child’s wants for darts, pellet guns or firearms. If you’re giving sporting equipment, consider that 100,000 sports-related eye injuries occur every year, one-third of them to children under age 16. Since 90 percent of the injuries could have been avoided with sports safety eyewear, make polycarbonate protective goggles or lenses part of the gift.
2. Make sure you and your family are singing “Oh, Christmas Tree,” not “Oh-Oh, Christmas Tree.” Pine needles can cause serious pokes and corneal abrasions. Be careful while decorating and keep a close eye on small children crawling under the tree. If an injury occurs, seek immediate medical attention to prevent serious infection.
3. Watch out for little fingers and hands during holiday visits.
The holidays are a wonderful time to appreciate your precious gift of sight. There are so many delightful things to see—twinkling lights, decorated houses, festive foods, and big, bright smiles. As such, the doctors at Eye Care Specialists suggest the following safety precautions to ensure a safe and joyous experience for everyone.

Children are notorious for pulling off eyeglasses. Take extra precautions when holding a child who may not be familiar with you or who may be overly excited by all of the holiday activities. A sharp poke or fingernail scratch to the eye is a surprise nobody wants. To prevent a mishap, hold small children with one arm and use your free hand to play with or hold their hand that is nearest your face.
4. Don’t turn a champagne cork into a blinding missile.
Keep the bottle chilled to reduce the chance of the cork popping on its own. Cover the top with a towel and tilt the bottle at a 45-degree angle away from yourself and others. Slowly and firmly, twist the cork to break the seal and pull upward until the cork is almost out of the neck. Counter the force of the cork by applying slight downward pressure just as it breaks free from the bottle. Holiday Magic at Angel Light www.angellight.com Do you remember the best store you ever shopped at? Perhaps it was during a vacation in a far-a-way town, or maybe it was right here in Wisconsin. Where ever it was, you probably remember it as a wonder-filled place with amazing gifts that touched your heart; gifts that created memories of a magical trip during a magical time in your life. Angel Light is a store with that type of magic. One of the first things you will notice about Angel Light is its sense of peacefulness. Once you take that first magical step across the Angel Light threshold, you will become aware of an energetic shift. You can breathe deeply and let go – a sensation far different than the local mall with its nightmare parking and many bad mannered shoppers. You will be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable and caring store helpers who are more interested in you than in making a sale. Hard to believe, I know, but you will become a believer after you experience Angel Light for the first time. The store has been built on a philosophy of caring for the individual spirit and counts its customers and clients among its greatest assets. There is amazing art on the wall, uniquely crafted pieces of jewelry, hand painted silks, and one-of-a-kind keepsakes – all a virtual feast for the eyes. Most of the products are created by local artists and the rest are fair-trade treasures purchased from vendors that honor the creators and the crafters. Tranquil music will surround you as you browse through the inspirational books or hold a healing crystal in the palm of their hand. Meaningful and affordable treasures abound and visitors will know that what they are drawn to purchase has been made as a gift from the heart. Then there is the sense of smell, not the overwhelming potpourri that can assault your senses upon entering some businesses, but the pure natural smell of the space combined with its chemical free soaps, essential oils and candles, or as some people describe it, “angel scent.” The trip through the senses continues at Angel Light when visitors take advantage of the many services offered including massage, hot stone and cranial sacral therapy, foot and hand Reflexology and Reiki treatments. Sound healing sessions are also available and customers can take advantage of the many special packages and discounts that are offered at Angel Light by signing up for a free newsletter at www.angellightllc.com. Acupuncture: A TOOL TO STRESS-PROOF YOUR HOLIDAYS
16 MHL DECEMBER 2013
The joys of the holiday season are often accompanied by increased demands that result in holiday stress. Busy schedules of events, shopping, entertaining and family affairs can leave us overwhelmed. If you are feeling the effects of holiday stress, you are not alone. According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, holiday stressors increase already high anxiety levels in many people. Additionally, those who experience elevated levels of stress rate their mental and physical health lower than those not experiencing stress – citing symptoms such as sadness, sleep problems and lack of energy. Taking care of yourself with exercise, adequate sleep, relaxation and a careful diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables are all ways to keep stress in check. However, these healthy behaviors can be challenging during the holidays. For that reason, acupuncture is a great tool for stress relief during hectic times, serving as an effective coping method by helping to maintain a sense of calm and well-being. Acupuncture is a time-proven holistic medical technique that works with the body’s inherent healing abilities through the painless insertion of small acupuncture needles followed by heat and massage. Multiple studies have found acupuncture to be particularly effective in treating stress, which researchers define as a physical, mental or emotional response to events which then cause mental or bodily tension. Stress can be manifested in a variety of ways: physically, mentally or emotionally. Common physical symptoms include headache, insomnia, digestive problems, muscle tension or pain and fatigue. Mental-emotional responses due to stress may include anxiety, anger, depression, irritability, overreaction to everyday problems, lack of concentration and memory loss. Several studies suggest that acupuncture can work to activate the parasympathetic (“rest and digest” response) nervous system, providing deep relaxation. Findings indicate that acupuncture may actually activate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. In addition, acupuncture is shown to improve circulation which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out toxins. The calming effect of acupuncture can help decrease the heart rate, lower blood pressure and relax the muscles. This combination has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, reduce stress and anxiety related to surgery and chemotherapy treatment and increase total sleep time and sleep efficiency. As a result of acupuncture, clients feel more rested and prepared for the holidays and New Year to come. For more information please call 414-962.5249. Written by Lee McCarthy, Lic.Ac. New Hope FOR ARTHRITIS SUFFERERS MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient’s body.
Aches and pains have long plagued people of all ages and walks of life. But exciting new technological advances are helping doctors of chiropractic get to the root causes of pain more rapidly than ever before. Statewide professionals, are using lasers to treat arthritis pain and dysfunction more efficiently by reducing the swelling and improving circulation to the affected tissues. Dr. Evans, owner of Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic in New Berlin, began using the noninvasive therapy system known as the MLS Class 4 Laser at her clinic in January of 2011. The response from patients has been phenomenal. “I have patients travelling from as far away as Sheboygan “This is definitely the wave of the future,” said Dr. Evans, who has been a practicing chiropractor for 22 years. “With the financial constraints of the All too often, physicians want to block the current economy and rising health insurance costs, people need to get better inflammatory process with medications faster.” While traditional chiropractic treatments typically would take three to four both prescribed and over the counter, but months to achieve a positive outcome, now with adding laser treatments the you need to work with it instead healing process is accelerated and patients are recovering in half the time. MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient’s body. One wave form relieves pain while the other accelerates the healing process. “This new technology gets patient’s better faster, this past year has been very exciting as I have been able to witness patient’s recover in ways I hadn’t seen before implementing this type of Laser therapy,” Evans said. The biggest problem any clinician faces when treating patients who are in pain is how to safely and effectively address inflammation. “All too often, physicians want to block the inflammatory process with medications both prescribed and over the counter, but you need to work with it instead,” she said. “This is where laser treatments make all the difference. The laser accelerates the inflammatory process (ie healing process) and this is why the patient recovers more quickly.” As advances have been made with technology, Class 4 lasers have enabled chiropractic professionals to venture into previously unheard of territory. Treatments were almost always ineffective for people where scar tissue had formed. Modern laser treatments have given professionals an opportunity to work through scar tissue – a scenario that has proven especially beneficial for the elderly and people who have had surgery. “One of the laser wave forms actually can break up old scar tissue when paired with the correct machine parameters thus allowing for greater joint motion and flexibility,” Evans said. “I like to think of it as WD-40 for the joints.” Walking has long been recommended as a key exercise in addressing weight gain—particularly for the aging population. But when a person has joint problems and pain, when walking could be a beneficial exercise is not an option. “Our bodies are meant to move but when movement causes pain it is almost impossible to remain healthy and vital thru the aging process,” Evans said. At Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic, patients typically undergo between 8 and 10 Laser treatments before inflammation has been adequately addressed and healing truly takes hold. A typical laser treatment lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, is painless, completely safe and has no adverse side effects.
HOLIDAY EDITION 2013 MHL 17
Redefining Health THE POWER OF BEARING WITNESS
By Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D. With the holiday’s fast approaching, we must remain mindful that this is a time when many people experience a sense of loss and grief rather than joy. The holidays can be a lonely time and they may deny how they feel for the sake of putting on a brave face. One of the greatest gifts we can offer them is the gift of bearing witness and holding space. As a physician who has the sacred responsibility and honor to do this for my patients, I am poignantly aware of how powerful this can be. For many, it can be the greatest gift of all. I have been seeing a patient, who I will call Ann, for 10 years. She is a therapist who is a gentle and sensitive soul. I can only imagine the gentle yet powerful space she is able to hold for her clients. As she bears witness to the many facets of their lives, they have a powerful witness to their process. They have her love, guidance, expertise and strong arms that hold them through their journeys. They are fortunate to have her in their lives. With the space she holds they know they are not alone. I saw Ann the other day when she needed me to bear witness to her process. She had to hold space for a mother who had lost her daughter. She was not sure what to say to this mother to help her pain. It rattled her to her core. As I sat with her and held space for her, all I could do is bear witness to her process. I told her that the most powerful gift she could give the grieving mother was her presence. Bearing witness is a gift we can offer each other at any time. In a world that is moving at warp speed, it is easy to forget that we matter. Since we don’t live in communities like we once did that marked our passages and witnessed our lives, it is common to spend our milestones alone. Once they pass, people get occupied again with their busyness and forget that we are in process. When a person experiences a loss, the process through grief takes time. It is important for them to be supported through its different stages. Bearing witness is a sacred act. It even changes the one who bears witness. It deepens and fortifies one’s soul. It makes one trustworthy. As a person’s grief transforms and shifts through its various stages, one gains access to the inner endurance that lives within. The vacuum that is left in one’s life is somehow filled with memories and a deeper level of wisdom. This is an alchemical process. The pain of loss never goes away, but it changes form and also changes the griever in profound ways. Without bearing witness, one could never experience the power of Soul in process. Many of us feel alone in our process. This is not good for our health. We feel isolated. We may feel that our process is a burden on others. Isolation is one of the most profound stressors on Earth. Being witnessed, on the other hand, makes us feel like we matter. Mattering is good for our health. It makes our life worth living. Mattering is a form of love. As a physician, I feel that bearing witness is the most sacred part of what I do each POWER>>page 38

Are You Healthy? Health is not merely the absence of disease...
This should be a simple question, but really it’s a deceptively complex issue that begins with trying to define health. Everybody talks about health, but what is health? A Google search for “definition of health” returns 451 million citations. The “Oxford Dictionaries” say health is the state of being free from illness or injury, but this is too limiting. The World Health Organization takes a broader view; Health is not merely the absence of disease...” It is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”. This definition of health is more comprehensive and includes critically important issues. Now that we have a definition for what health is, how do you translate this into your daily life. The first thing to ask is; “How am I doing now?” Do I feel good? Can I physically and mentally do the things I want to do? Am I competently managing the daily stress in my life? The answer to these questions gives you a snapshot of your current physical, mental and social well-being, but this picture does not always do a good job of telling you when your systems reserves are being depleted and what problems are coming in the future. A single frame from a movie may tell you what’s happening right now but may not tell you what’s going to happen in the next scene. If you’re feeling good now, there may be very little indication that you are developing chronic problems that will manifest themselves in the future. To be healthy you have to be concerned not only with present issues but with factors that will affect future well-being. Can you prevent the development of chronic diseases? If you already have a chronic disease can you slow the progression or possibly reverse its course? The answers to these questions are: Yes you can! In order to do this, though, you need a more comprehensive preventative approach than what the medical system commonly provides. Currently, you get blood pressure meds to lower your high blood pressure, insulin or metformin to lower your high blood sugar, and cardiac catheterizations and stents to bypass your plaque. All of these interventions are extremely important, in fact can be lifesaving, when needed. Most of our chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases and cancers develop over years to decades. The more important question for each of you is: “Before I show overt signs and symptoms that need to be treated, is there a way to determine, that I have begun to develop a chronic disease and change the course while I’m still feeling good? Genetics and environment both play important roles. Your genetics are a baseline, but your environment plays a significant role in how your genes are actually expressed. If your environment leads to excess oxidative stress and you are nutritionally deficient in the factors that are needed to adequately breakdown toxins, how your DNA is actually expressed will change. Important environmental factors include sleep patterns, nutritional status, exercise patterns, stress, support systems, and exposures to toxins. A person whose diet is overwhelmed by Omega 6 fats, excess carbohydrates, excess neuro-excitatory stimulants, i.e. aspartame from diet soda will be at a much higher risk of developing hypertension, heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic immune disorders. A person raised in an environment exposed to heavy metals high levels of PCBs or other plastic will be in a much higher risk for developing heart disease and cancer. Do you Exercise 5 times/week for 30 mins? This is important because doing so has been shown to decrease all-cause mortality by up to 30%. Specifically it reduces the risk of stroke by 25%, reduces the risk of heart attack and cardiac death by 40%., reduces high blood pressure by 10 to 15 mm Hg, reduces stress, reduces the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancer, and facilitates detoxification.1 Do you sleep 7 or more hours per night? This is important because not doing so is associated with neurological diseases: stroke, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, slower brain cell repair and regeneration, childhood obesity, GERD – heartburn, abnormal appetite regulation , increased high blood pressure and increased risk of developing high blood pressure, accelerated loss of visual short-term memories, and reduced testosterone production in young healthy males by 15%.2 Do you eat 9 servings of vegetables and whole Fruits per day? Families are important to brain injury recovery
The spotlight has been on brain injury in recent months, from the National Football League’s concerns about players who’ve suffered concussions, to the teen boy in Colorado who says that he emerged from brain injury with a new ability to play music. Brain injuries not only affect the 1.7 million people who sustain them in the U.S. each year, or the more than 5 million people who are living with the physical and emotional aftermath of brain injury, but their families and friends as well. No two brain injuries are exactly alike. Leading causes of traumatic brain injury include vehicle crashes, falls and violence. Non-traumatic brain injury can be caused by stroke, lack of oxygen, tumors, brain infections and other illnesses such as cancer or metabolic disorders. People who are recovering from brain injury benefit from a personalized plan that focuses on immediate and long-term goals and also considers the needs of the patient’s family. The recovery team can include a variety of experts, from care managers to physical and occupational therapists, to physicians, physiatrists, psychologists, speech therapists, music and art therapists, and vocational rehabilitation specialists. For some patients, aquatic therapy, animal-assisted therapy (pet therapy) and horticultural therapy may also be an important element of the recovery plan. Heidi Sykora, Doctor of Nursing Practice and vice president for clinical quality services at the Milwaukee Center for Independence, said an interdisciplinary team has the expertise to treat the “whole person,” so that the person recovering from brain injury can identify and achieve his physical, psychosocial and functional goals. The team can help family members cope with changes in their loved one as well, Sykora said. Kathleen Coffey, MSN, has extensive experience in working with people who are recovering from brain injuries, including service at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, one of the top traumatic brain injury centers in the world. She said family members can be an important part of the patient’s recovery. “It is very helpful to know what the person who is now recovering was like prior to sustaining a brain injury,” Coffey said. “With that information, we have an understanding of their interests, their personality, their skills and their ability to learn prior to the injury. All of that helps in planning their recovery.” Coffey said by the time family members get through the acute phase of recovery immediately following the injury, they are often exhausted. This tip sheet offers research-based guidelines for seniors to easily explore websites that work well for them, the fastest-growing group of Internet users. Besides sending and receiving email, older adults search the web for health, financial, and religious or spiritual information. They also use the Internet to shop, play games, perform genealogy searches, and book travel. As the baby boomers age, the number of older adults using the Internet will continue to grow, and web designers will increasingly be called on to tailor websites to this population.

The Senior Community Living providing HEALTHIER LIVING
The healthier one is, the better able you are to take control of your life.
“You’ll be safe!” “No more work, No chores!”, “No more lawn mowing or shoveling snow!” ”You’ll have help when you need it!” If these phrases sound familiar you are probably over 50. They are used by many families in an effort to convince an older family member to move into Senior Housing. Are these really good arguments for moving? Leaving the home you’ve had for many years? No! They are not the best reason for moving! No wonder so many older adults tune out this discussion. It does sound like they are being turned out to “pasture’. It sounds like the family doesn’t want to help anymore. Mom and Dad are insulted that you think they are not safe or able to maintain their home. They are angry that you don’t want to have to check on them or help with outdoor chores, They feel that their children don’t want to be bothered any more. On top of being insulted and angry, they are afraid. Afraid of the unkown; afraid of losing control of their life and the decisions that go with daily living. The real reason older people should move is to stay healthy in body and mind. The healthier one is, the better able you are to take control of your life. The past 20 years there have been hundreds of research studies all reaching the same conclusion- In order to stay healthy, physically and mentally, people must not live alone . As you age, you experience limitations on driving and moving your body due to aches and pains. People have retired from jobs and as a result see more limitations on the number of people and mental challenges they encounter. Gradually, as time goes on, the relationships with people and new activities decreases. If you want to stay healthy and able to control your life, then it is simple! Move to a community where you see and talk to people every day. Where new people come and go. Where there are tours, trips, games and lessons. Get your brain working and your body moving. In Wisconsin, this means moving to a building of apartments or condominiums so even in bad weather you won’t be alone - a prisoner in your home. In a 24 hour day , 7 days a week, there is still plenty of time and need for family to stop by for visits and help. Time for them to participate in your life. But, even if family visits 1-2 hours every day, that leaves 22 hours of time alone. It is not enough to keep you healthy. So be fearless! Be healthy physically and mentally by moving to a community where you talk to a variety of people every day. Where you can take trips to shop, learn and laugh. Be in control of your life because you are as healthy as you possibly can be. Jackson Crossings is one such community that offers independent apartments for seniors who want to stay active and involved. Check out Jackson Crossings Retirement Community at www.jacksoncrossings.com or call (262) 993-2838 to schedule a visit.

Staying Social
FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!
It has been shown that people who have good social networks live longer. They also are physically healthier than people who are isolated.
Information provided by Tudor Oaks Retirement Community Traditionally December is the month to recognize the love of your life with a special dinner, presents or simply a card. Everyone appreciates a kind thought or gesture so don’t limit your list. This is the perfect time to surprise family and friends with a token of your appreciation. Not only will they enjoy the recognition but when you put a smile on someone’s face you will smile too. All those smiles will help to keep you socially connected. It has been shown that people who have good social networks live longer. They also are physically healthier than people who are isolated. In fact, experts say that how socially connected a person tends to be is one of the most important ways of predicting his or her health and independence in later years. Maintaining supportive relationships is an important element of effective aging. The more contact we have
with others as we age, the better we may be at retaining mental sharpness and a higher activity level. There is a lot of evidence that people are the most unpredictable things you can encounter, so activities that have you engaging with other human beings are a fantastic form of brain exercise. A major public-health study involving more than 116,000 participants found that people with strong relationships had less mental decline and lived more active, pain-free lives without physical limitations. Other studies suggest that people with the most limited social connections are twice as likely to die over a given period than those with the widest social networks. Many experts believe that social isolation may create a chronically stressful condition that accelerates aging. This information is especially important to older people, who may be more likely to lead solitary lives— especially if family and friends have moved away or died. Of course, combating loneliness requires time
and energy, both in establishing new relationships and in deepening existing ones. But the benefits are well worth the effort. “As soon as you become captive in your room or your chair, you’ve got a problem,” says Michael Merzenich, PhD, a neurobiologist at University of California, San Francisco. “You become removed from the possibilities for excitement, for learning, and for engaging your brain with fun and surprise. Your brain needs you to get out and have those 1,000 daily surprises.” How can we ensure that strong human connections continue to be an integral part of our lives as we age? Aging experts recommend staying involved in religious and community functions, maintaining a network of friends and family with whom we regularly interact, and volunteering in organizations that get us out and among other people. This month you could surprise family and friends with Christmas Cards for the health of it.

Medicare Is The Best Care IF YOU ARE AGE 65 OR OLDER
By Karyl Richson Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Milwaukee, WI If you are age 65 or older and haven’t signed up for Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance), now is the time to consider doing so. The general enrollment period for Medicare Part B runs from January 1 through March 31 each year. Before you make a decision about general enrollment, we want to share some important information. Remember: Most people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part B when they become eligible. If you don’t enroll in Medicare Part B when you first become eligible, you may have to wait until the general enrollment period, which is January 1 through March 31 of each year. At that time, you may have to pay a higher Medicare Part B premium. What is Medicare? Medicare is health insurance for people receiving Social Security who are age 65 or older or those who have received Social Security disability benefits for more than two years. Some people are covered only by one of the four parts of Medicare; others opt to pay extra for more coverage. Understanding Medicare can save you money; here are the facts. The four parts of Medicare are parts A, B, C, and D. • Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home health care. Most people get Medicare Part A premiumfree since it was earned by working and paying Social Security taxes. • Part B (Medical Insurance) helps cover services from doctors and other outpatient health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services. Most people pay a premium for Part B. • Part C (Medicare Advantage) allows you to choose to receive all of your health care services through a provider organization. These plans include all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B, usually includes Medicare prescription drug coverage as part of the plan, and may include extra benefits and services for an extra cost. You must have Part A and Part B to enroll in Part C. Monthly premiums vary depending on your state, private insurer, and whether you select a health maintenance organization or a preferred provider organization. • Part D (Medicare prescription drug coverage) helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Many people pay a premium for Part D. However, people with low income and resources may qualify for extra help from Social Security to pay the premium and deductible. To see if you qualify for extra help visit www.ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp. Most people first become eligible for Medicare at age 65, and there is a monthly premium for Medicare Part B. In 2014, the premium for most people is $104.90, the same as it was in 2013. Some high-income individuals pay more than the standard premium. Your Medicare Part B premium also can be higher if you do not enroll when you are first eligible, also known as your initial enrollment period. There also is a Medicare Part B deductible of $147 in 2014. You can delay your Medicare Part B enrollment without having to pay higher premiums if you are covered under a group health plan based on your own current employment or the current employment of any family member. You can sign up for Medicare Part B without paying higher premiums: • In any month you are covered under a group health plan based on your own current employment or the current employment of any family member; or • Within eight months after your employment or group health plan coverage ends, whichever comes first. How Therapy Can Help
CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERERS Joyce Williamson Pain is our body’s natural response to harm or possible damage. Injury, illness or chemical changes within the body can trigger nerve endings called pain receptors. When a pain receptor is turned on, it activates the release of chemicals which sends a signal to the brain. The brain receives this signal and recognizes it as pain. Managing & Treating Pain Treating chronic pain can be difficult because it varies from person to person and there are many different causes and possible treatments. Developing the right treatment plan for your diagnosis is often the work of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals. When consulting with your doctor, he may refer you to visit a physical and occupational therapist. Physical Therapy Physical Therapists can assess your chronic pain, and based on your goals, will establish a therapy treatment plan fit for you. Treatment may include both passive and active treatments. Passive treatments help you to relax, while active treatments are therapeutic exercises to strengthen your body and help manage your pain. Through physical therapy you will learn various exercises to improve your flexibility and range of motion, and good habits and principles which enable you to take better care of your body. Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapists understand pain is subjective and complex. Occupational therapists work individually with you to evaluate the pain’s impact on your desired activities and quality of life. Your occupational therapist can teach you skills and strategies to manage and cope with your pain. With occupational therapy, you can learn how to redirect your pain so it interferes less with your daily life. What Can You Do? It is very important for people with chronic pain to educate themselves by reading literature on pain and seek help. The key to managing your pain is to find the strategy that works best for you. Consult with your doctor and ask if physical and occupational therapy can benefit you!

Senior Communities:
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE THIS NEW YEAR Many people delay the decision to move to a retirement community due to misconceptions or fear. They often regret not making the decision to move sooner; when they were healthier, more involved, or did not realize how lonely they were and the reasons go on and on. Regret is undesirable in all times of life; retirement decisions are no different. The many activities and daily interactions with friends and neighbors offer a dynamic and stimulating environment. Residents freely share their thoughts about retirement living in general and the choices available to them. As you read through this article, look for the comfort, freedom and peace of mind that come from making informed choices. “Statistics show that retirement community residents live healthier and longer lives than those living alone.” That doesn’t sound like rocket science; we need people. A resident commented, “If I knew how many of my friends lived here, I would have moved in years ago.”

As one resident says, “I have to admit, it was lonely sometimes at home, now there is always something enjoyable to do.” Whether you want to participate in all of the social activities and outings or read a good book in the quiet of your apartment, the choice is yours. “I love telling stories and reminiscing but it’s not always easy when they’re thirty years younger than me,” remarks a resident. A retirement community, by its very nature, allows people to interact with people their own age affording greater empathy and identification. Memories and recollections are complimented when two people can truly share the depth and breathe of events. Somewhat tongue-incheek yet true, is the adage that retirement communities provide a “constant reservoir of friends.” “I never have to worry about home upkeep or shoveling again,” said a smiling resident. Now you can choose what you would like to spend time doing: cooking in your apartment, patio gardening, traveling, learning to paint or play the piano; all of the things you never felt you had time to do before. The choice is yours. Keeping the mind, body and spirit healthy is the goal of many retirement communities. “When I moved here, it was very impressive to see how many care about my wellbeing,” a resident reported. Your choice of personal wellness goals are supported by a retirement community’s team who are all rooting for you. “Wellness programs” are growing initiatives in retirement communities to ensure balance, increased strength and awareness of changes. Many retirement communities provide a spiritual component through pastoral visits or Sunday services that keep your hope and faith strong through all times of life. Retirement communities offer various forms of financial protections like “life care” or “endowments” that protect your financial future regardless of your health. A “life care” type contract also provides the potential for tax deductions for prepaid medical expenses. If you don’t feel the need for long term health care coverage, many communities offer rental programs, so again the choice is yours as to which option works best for you. “When my wife had her stroke, it was so convenient to visit her several times a day. I couldn’t do that if I had to drive each way,” commented a resident. Should a care need arise, retirement communities can provide professional and caring services, all in the comfort of your “community.” The choice is yours regarding your lifestyle and many elements need to be considered in making your decision. Should you decide that a retirement community is right for you, there are many elements, such as the ones listed here, that need to be considered and weighed, so that you can feel confident about your final 1/2 pg bridgeway healthwise ad_Layout 1 3/23/12 11:18 AM Page 1 choice.

WHAT IS PARKINSON’S DISEASE?
32 MHL DECEMBER 2013
Parkinson’s disease (PD) belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The four primary symptoms of PD are tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs and trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination. As these symptoms become more pronounced, patients may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks. PD usually affects people over the age of 50. Early symptoms of PD are subtle and occur gradually. In some people the disease progresses more quickly than in others. As the disease progresses, the shaking, or tremor, which affects the majority of PD patients may begin to interfere with daily activities. Other symptoms may include depression and other emotional changes; difficulty in swallowing, chewing, and speaking; urinary problems or constipation; skin problems; and sleep disruptions. There are currently no blood or laboratory tests that have been proven to help in diagnosing sporadic PD. Therefore the diagnosis is based on medical history and a neurological examination. The disease can be difficult to diagnose accurately. Doctors may sometimes request brain scans or laboratory tests in order to rule out other diseases. Is there any treatment? At present, there is no cure for PD, but a variety of medications provide dramatic relief from the symptoms. Usually, patients are given levodopa combined with carbidopa. Carbidopa delays the conversion of levodopa into dopamine until it reaches the brain. Nerve cells can use levodopa to make dopamine and replenish the brain’s dwindling supply. Although levodopa helps at least three-quarters of parkinsonian cases, not all symptoms respond equally to the drug. Bradykinesia and rigidity respond best, while tremor may be only marginally reduced. Problems with balance and other symptoms may not be alleviated at all. Anticholinergics may help control tremor and rigidity. Other drugs, such as bromocriptine, pramipexole, and ropinirole, mimic the role of dopamine in the brain, causing the neurons to react as they would to dopamine. An antiviral drug, amantadine, also appears to reduce symptoms. In May 2006, the FDA approved rasagiline to be used along with levodopa for patients with advanced PD or as a single-drug treatment for early PD. In some cases, surgery may be appropriate if the disease doesn’t respond to drugs. A therapy called deep brain stimulation (DBS) has now been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In DBS, electrodes are implanted into the brain and connected to a small electrical device called a pulse generator that can be externally programmed. DBS can reduce the need for levodopa and related drugs, which in turn decreases the involuntary movements called dyskinesias that are a common side effect of levodopa. It also helps to alleviate fluctuations of symptoms and to reduce tremors, slowness of movements, and gait problems. DBS requires careful programming of the stimulator device in order to work correctly. What is the prognosis? PD is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. Although some people become severely disabled, others experience only minor motor disruptions. Tremor is the major symptom for some patients, while for others tremor is only a minor complaint and other symptoms are more troublesome. No one can predict which symptoms will affect an individual patient, and the intensity of the symptoms also varies from person to person. What research is being done? The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conducts PD research in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and also supports additional research through grants to major medical institutions across the country. Current research programs funded by the NINDS are using animal models to study how the disease progresses and to develop new drug therapies. Scientists looking for the cause of PD continue to search for possible environmental factors, such as toxins, that may trigger the disorder, and study genetic factors to determine how defective genes play a role. Other scientists are working to develop new protective drugs that can delay, prevent, or reverse the disease. More information about Parkinson’s Disease research is available at http://www. ninds.nih.gov/research/parkinsonsweb/index.htm
Getting The Facts About
ARTHRITIS Arthritis is a general term to describe pain and loss of movement of a joint. Symptoms of arthritis may include pain, stiffness, swelling, and inflammation. Over 100 arthritic conditions exist and treatment recommendations will vary depending on type. Some examples of commonly recognized forms of arthritis include gout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis. Certain arthritic conditions can present with musculoskeletal conditions such as bursitis, tendinitis, or carpal tunnel syndrome, so it is important to have an arthritis evaluation if these symptoms recur.
By Justina Tseng, MD Who gets arthritis? A misconception is that arthritis only affects the elderly. Symptoms of arthritis can start at any age and can manifest in early or mid adult years. Gender, co-existing medical conditions, food allergies, prior injuries or surgeries, in addition to age, can influence what type of arthritis occurs in an individual. Multiple types of arthritis can occur simultaneously so it is important to know if you suffer from more than one type so that the comprehensive treatment recommendations can be instituted. What causes arthritis? Some contributing factors that cause and perpetuate arthritis symptoms can include cartilage breakdown, an overactive immune system, uncontrolled inflammation, and allergic reactions. Genetic factors may play a role in certain arthritic conditions. How do you know when you may be developing arthritis? Symptoms of pain, stiffness, and swelling can affect any joint in the body and can start off in one joint, or multiple joints. Activity and mobility can worsen certain forms of arthritis, and improve others. Symptoms that affect both sides of the body can be indicative of arthritis caused by inflammation. Some people may have joint pains that “flare” and then subside, while others experience constant daily symptoms. A percentage of people may develop arthritis symptoms suddenly whereas others have a much slower progression. Can you get rid of arthritis? At this time, there is no absolute cure for the majority of arthritic conditions. However, the good news is with early diagnosis and treatment, arthritis progression can be controlled and symptoms can often times abate, allowing patients to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Have there been any new treatment breakthroughs in recent years? In the last decade, there have been many new treatment options available to individuals suffering from certain arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriARTHRITIS>>page 35

LIVING LIFE ON PURPOSE WITH THE 4 PILLARS When the weather turns colder, and streets get icy, many seniors tend to retreat inside, remaining more or less housebound through the long winter, withdrawn from active living. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Senior Living at the Lighthouse Communities is built around the 4 Pillars: Physical Fitness, Brain Fitness, Dining Experience and Social/Spiritual Enrichment. Backed by plenty of research, Lighthouse residents engage the 4 Pillars as part of an integrated approach to Living Life on Purpose®. We all understand that if we eat a little better, exercise a bit more, connect with others and use our brains instead of putting them on hold in front of the TV, that we will be better off. It is no surprise that research supports each of these points. We are social creatures, and we actually fare better physically when we are in community rather than alone. Lighthouse Communities take things further by encouraging seniors daily in each of the 4 Pillar. Dakim Brain Fitness computer stations and It’s Never Too Late interactive computers provide additional means for individual and group activity. Exercise programs, social and spiritual activities, and a brand new menu are all part of the 4 Pillar, enhanced living experience in Lighthouse Communities. Lighthouse of West Bend offers independent and assisted living, as well as specialized Betty’s Harbor Memory Care. Our Lighthouse Communities in Brookfield, Brown Deer and Mequon offer Betty’s Harbor Memory Care. This winter, why not consider the warmth of a Lighthouse Community for the best approach to Living Life on Purpose® for you or someone you love?

These medications have allowed individuals to not only control their arthritis symptoms, but also prevent ongoing joint damage and thus reduce the disabling deformities that might otherwise occur. What is the integrative approach to treatment of arthritis? Mind, body, and lifestyle are important factors to those suffering from arthritis. Treating arthritis involves integrating these components along with tailored medication regimens, and joint evaluations to achieving healthy joints and maximal wellness. Dietary recommendations, exercise programs suited to each individual and alternative therapies can be part of the patient-centered integrated approach to arthritis.

How about a New Year’s resolution that is not only doable but beneficial to your overall health? Promise yourself that you will not fall and then ensure that it comes true. Statistics tell the story: adults who fall aged 65 and older is 1 in 3, 20-30% of those falls can result in severe injuries, falls are the leading cause of injury or death among those 65 and older and one of the most common reasons to visit the emergency room. Older adults often feel stable and steady, thinking that a fall will never happen to them. Yet, a simple slip of a foot or quickly rising from a chair and they don’t know how they’ve landed on the floor. To fulfill this New Year’s resolution consider some simple changes both in the home and in your body. Making your living space safe is the first step by eliminating throw rugs, no matter how sentimental they may be to you and removing any visible extension cords. Also making your bathroom secure with handrails helps maintain balance and avoid slippery floors. “Exercise doesn’t need to be a scary word for older adults,” says Jane Fuller, Alexian Village’s personal trainer in its “Fit for Life” program. “Simple exercises using just a chair can stretch and strength muscles to avoid falls.” Try these chair exercises with fifteen repetitions for each. While sitting on an upright chair, raise one leg at time as if you’re trying to kick a soccer ball. Sitting tall, slowly roll your shoulders forward and backwards. Be sure to go slowly. Bring your arms to your side and then slowly bring them out to the sides and up over your head and let them back down. Move each ankle in circles first going clockwise and then counterclockwise. How about some marching music? Stand behind the chair and raise your knee as high as you can. You are now stretching muscles and will feel a difference immediately. “It’s difficult to say absolutely that an older adult will not fall because of exercise but I can guarantee that the possibility diminishes,” Fuller said. POWER<<page 18 day. Holding space and bearing witness to sometimes unbearable suffering deepens my heart and fortifies my soul. It makes my patients feel that they matter, that their pain and suffering matters. To be asked to bear witness for another is a profound honor. Life presents us with so many ways to bear witness to each other every day. We must embrace these opportunities for loving. Like Ann, who will be changed forever by her witnessing, we must hold our strong arms around each other with open hearts. As Ann bears witness to a grieving mother, I bear witness to Ann. Somehow, I feel that my arms are around her and this mother, all at the same time. My heart is open to holding space for all of this. For me it is a great honor and a blessing. Making another feel like they matter also makes my life matter. Isn’t this ultimately what we are on Earth to experience? For me, this is one of the greatest form of love. ©December, 2013 Kalpana (Rose) M. HEALTHY<<page20 tant because, with each 1-serving increase intake of fruits or vegetables research has shown an additional 4% lower risk for coronary heart disease. 3 Is you resting heart rate <=65? This is important because for every 10 bpm that your resting heart rate is more than 65 your risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death increases by 10 -20%.4 Is you fasting blood sugar less than 84? This is important because for every 1 point that you fasting morning blood sugar is above 84 your risk of developing diabetes within 10 years, increases by 6%.5 Not only is it important to feel good now, but it is extremely important to evaluate and monitor the internal signs that are early indicators of chronic disease. This can be accomplished with a thorough functional medicine evaluation. The functional medicine, approach begins with a complete medical history that identifies when and how problems began and possible predisposing factors, both genetic and environmental. It continues with identifying current issues, environmental, nutritional, and potential toxins that either activate or perpetuate the problem. These are all evaluated in conjunction with important lifestyle issues, including nutritional status, quality and amount of exercise, sleep habits, life stresses, and support systems. This is followed by targeted laboratory testing to evaluate, hormones, energy production, the state of the immune system, the level of oxidative stress, neurotransmitters, digestion, nutrient deficiencies, and the ability to metabolize or detox normal byproducts or toxins. All of this forms the basis for individually tailored treatment plans that integrate medicines, nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, lifestyle modifications, botanicals, and other alternative treatments with the goal to prevent or slow the development of chronic diseases and to maintain health, the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.
