Gerrit Bruni of the Milwaukee track & field team has been named the Horizon League Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This marks the first time in Bruni’s career he has been honored by the league. The senior helped Milwaukee to a perfect 3-0 record at the John Tierney Quad this past Saturday – the first of two home meets for the Panthers this season. Bruni burst out of the gates in the 3000m race and set the pace right from the beginning, crossing the line with an outstanding time of 8:33.25. That time broke the meet record by nearly two seconds and was well ahead of the next finisher in the 17-man field. The Panthers will head to a pair of meets next weekend. Part of the team will stay close for the Green & White Invitational at UWParkside, while the rest of the squad will head to the GVSU Mike Lints Invitational at Grand Valley State. Both meets are scheduled for Saturday.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON FOOD AND WORKING OUT Question: What should I eat or drink if I only have an hour before I work out? Answer: What you eat before a practice or game should be largely determined by timing and personal preference. Generally speaking, a large meal takes 4-5 hours to digest, a smaller meal takes 2-3 hours and a large snack takes 1-2 hours. If you don’t digest food well enough prior to an activity, you can end up with a stomachache and cramping. This often occurs because blood (which plays a key role in digestion) is shunted to your arms and legs during activity, thereby slowing down the digestive process. Therefore, if you only have an hour to fuel yourself, it would probably be best to stick with a liquid carbohydrate/ protein shake. Liquids are processed faster than solid foods and will provide the energy you need in a shorter timeframe. Keep in mind, we’re not talking about those ice cream-based shakes from fast food restaurants. We’re talking about a sports nutrition shake that is designed for active individuals and athletes. If you want something lighter, a traditional sports drink would be a viable option as well. There are a number of products on the market in each category, so do some taste-testing to see which ones work best for you. Question: What are your thoughts on cheat meals, especially for those that are diligent with their daily eating? Answer: It’s an interesting question, but the answer really depends on how you define diligent. For those that follow consistent patterns of clean eating—meaning they follow a regimented diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats—I have no problem with a cheat meal here and there. Again, it just comes down to frequency. I happen to think that having a cheat meal or splurging a bit is just part of living a healthy and happy life. But you also have to realize that it doesn’t take much to throw you off track if your focus is on attaining or maintaining a healthy weight. Therefore, it may be wise to increase your physical activity for a day or two before and after the meal. This will help to compensate for the calorie load and may make you more at ease with your decision. And be mindful of your other meals as well, so that your one cheat meal doesn’t turn into two or three. Enjoy!! Question: I see a bunch of guys wearing weight belts in the gym. Should I be wearing one too? Answer: Generally speaking, there’s no need to wear a weight belt when strength training. This practice became quite popular in the 80’s and 90’s, and now you can find plenty of people that simply won’t lift without them. Don’t be one of them! In actuality, lifting consistently with a weight belt can weaken your lower back and abdominal muscles over time, so most of us should be leaving it at home. There are certain instances when a weight belt may be useful however, including maximal lifts for things like squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. But when you move on to exercises like rowing, bench presses, and other more standard lifts, take it off and toss it aside! For more information go to www.anytimefitness.com.

NEWS ZHEXUAN ZHOU, A SOPHOMORE AT UWM, WAS ARRESTED LATE FRIDAY, JAN. 8, AFTER UWM POLICE RECEIVED A TIP ABOUT A SUSPICIOUS PERSON.
Student Charged With Arson In Uwm Campus Fire
A Milwaukee man was charged Tuesday with arson in connection with a Jan. 5 fire in the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (EMS) building on the UW-Milwaukee campus. Zhexuan Zhou, a sophomore at UWM, was arrested late Friday, Jan. 8, after UWM police received a tip about a suspicious person. Zhou has been charged with felony arson and felony reckless endangerment in connection with the fire. He also was charged with misdemeanor arson in connection with a fire that occurred in the UWM Physics building on Dec. 22. That fire extinguished itself by the time police arrived and caused only minor damage. The preliminary estimate for cleanup and restoration in EMS is $300,000 to $500,000, including rebuilding a classroom and cleaning and restoring smoke damage on each of the building’s 13 floors. On 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 5, UWM police responded to a report of smoke on the first floor of the engineering building. The officers located the source of the smoke in a first floor classroom and activated the building’s fire alarm. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded and extinguished the small fire, but not before smoke traveled throughout the building. Because the fire occurred late in the day during UWM’s winter break, few people were in the building and all were safely evacuated. Responders determined the fire was suspicious, and the UWM Police Department contacted the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigation – State Fire Marshal’s Office. The state fire marshal conducted an investigation on Jan. 6 and concluded the fire was an act of arson. On Friday morning, Jan. 8, UWM Facilities staff were provided instruction on looking out for suspicious activity connected to the Jan. 5 fire. Later that day, a UWM custodian notified police about a suspicious individual in the Lubar School of Business building. Police found Zhou and took him into custody. “We appreciate Facilities’ assistance and the custodian’s alert response,” UWM Police Chief Joseph LeMire said. “Her prompt notification of the police contributed to the arrest of this suspect and may have prevented further criminal behavior and damage to our buildings.” The engineering building was closed through Dec. 10 for the investigation and cleanup. Cleanup continues even though the building has reopened.

EDUCATION AND SCHOOL ARE THE ANSWER TO MOST SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS. If you break down the major issues facing our lives most of them can be traced back to education. We’re not talking this corny get a degree stuff, but instead hard core information that would clear up many of the woes we all face. Children need a drastic over haul of the information they are being taught in schools. HEALTH CARE The absolute number one way to drive down health care costs is for us to be healthier. Obvious, right? Why aren’t schools putting a premium on physical activity? Schools, in fact, are doing the opposite. They put a premium on sedentary behavior because it makes the kids easier to manage and the teachers are generally not in good enough shape to keep up with them. The kids not getting the ADD label should be the one’s we are most concerned about. Also, why aren’t schools spending more time teaching kids about diet choices? If kids understood the true difference between a hot dog (including how it was made) and a banana, they would probably start choosing the banana. When I see a third or fourth grader who is already morbidly obese, all I can think is what a struggle they are going to have physically, emotionally and socially as they age. MONEY Kids are going to be a lot more bitter if you start bringing up the money realities at age 17 when they don’t have a lot of options left. They can handle small doses of it at age 10 or so and this gives them years to work it out. Career should be a major part of the school curriculum. For instance, kids who live in the blue collar part of town should be informed that traditional manufacturing jobs will be, all but, gone in the years to come. SOCIAL School needs to teach kids to be socially competent. The technology age is creating a generation of social misfits who don’t even know how to say hello without texting it. Basic social skills must be taught so kids can function in a job setting, find and keep a mate, handle themselves with grace in different social settings. WORLD EVENTS Judging by how many people believe every Muslim is a terrorist, we must believe we can do a better job of teaching what is going on currently and the reasons why one culture is different from the next. How many people know the answer to these questions without referencing the internet? What is an isosceles triangle? Who are Lewis and Clark? Who was the 13th president? What is a slide ruler for?The more important question is has anyone used this information in their adult life?

The Milwaukee swimming & diving teams are home for the final time this season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host conference rival Green Bay at the Klotsche Natatorium. Scouting The Meet Milwaukee heads into its final meet of the regular season looking for more top times before the Horizon League Championships, which are just under a month from now. Green Bay comes into the meet with a 4-2 record on the women’s side and a 2-4 mark on the men’s side. The Phoenix lost on both sides to conference foes UIC and Oakland earlier this year, split with Wright State and swept Valparaiso. Most recently, GB took down Northern Michigan last Saturday. Senior Salute Saturday will be the final time in the Klotsche Natatorium pool for 16 members of the Milwaukee Panthers. This year’s graduating senior class combined for five league trophies – one league title and four second-place finishes. Last Time In The Pool UWM returned home from its annual winter training trip with a pair of wins at the University of Chicago two weeks ago. The Panthers won 18 of the 32 events on the day to complete the sweep in the windy city. League Notice With one week left in the regular season, the Panthers have already posted some of the top results in the Horizon League and the league office taking notice. In fact, after just four weeks in the pool, Milwaukee has already garnered six athlete of the week honors. Here is the complete list so far this season: Oct. 20 – Sara Bentley, Rachel Margis Oct. 27 – Sara Bentley, Rachel Margis, Nic Halverson Nov. 10 – Rachel Margis Jan. 19 – Rachel Margis Top Times UWM has been one of the top teams in the Horizon League since Kyle Clements was named the team’s head coach. This year is no different, with the Panthers already boasting three of the top times in the league thus far. Milwaukee also has an impressive 55 top-eight times heading into the last meet of the regular season. History Of Success Milwaukee just missed another pair of Horizon League Championship last February in hosting the league meet, taking second on both the men’s and women’s side. In all, UWM has won seven Horizon League titles in swimming & diving in program history. Milwaukee has been crowned league champs on the men’s side four times (1999-2000, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12) and three times on the women’s side (2000-2001, 2011-12, 2012-13). Additionally, the Panthers have claimed an outstanding 16 team trophies (first or second) at the league meet since the move to Division I in 1990, with 12 of those trophies coming in the last seven years. Back For More Milwaukee had loads of success during last season and a majority of the team returns for the 2015-16 campaign. Panther Trio Honored By Horizon League
Johnson, Holmes, Anderson all recognized after strong first meet
mkepanthers.com After just the first week of action, senior Marquis Johnson, junior Leah Holmes and sophomore Rylee Anderson of the Milwaukee track & field teams have been named Horizon League Athletes of the Week, the league office announced today. Johnson and Holmes swept the league runner of the week awards, while Anderson was named women’s field athlete of the week. Johnson kicks off his senior year with a bang, taking his seventh weekly league honor. Meanwhile, this is the third time in track Holmes has been honored by the league, while the award is the second for Anderson. Milwaukee started its 2016 campaign on a strong note at the Karl Schlender Invite in Whitewater on Saturday. Johnson showed he was already in midseason form by winning both the 200m and 400m on the day. The Lac du Flambeau native topped the 48-man field in the 200m with a time of 21.94, ranking 42nd in the nation. Then, blew by the field in the 400m in a blazing 48.49, already 18th-fastest time in the NCAA. Holmes also had a dominant start to her indoor track season. The 2015 Horizon League Cross Country champion picked up right where she left off, winning the 800m going away in 2:19.53, nearly eight seconds ahead of the next finisher. Holmes also helped the DMR team to a first-place finish with a time of 12:34.98 – currently checking in at 51st in the country. Anderson led the way for Milwaukee in the field events. The sophomore won the high jump after clearing 1.67m (5-5 ¾) on her first attempt and just missing on her PR attempt at 1.70m in the first meet of the year. Milwaukee returns to action this Saturday when it host the John Tierney Quad from the Klotsche Center, with field events starting at 11 a.m. February 2016the Panther xpress 15

record-breakers back for more this year. Rachel Margis (1M), Tim Halverson (500 Free), Nic Halverson (1000 Free, 400 IM), Max Gatzke (1650 Free) and Taylor Wisdorf (100 Breast) all return in pursuit of more top times/marks this season. Diving For Gold UWM has always boasted some of the best divers in the conference, and this season figures to be much of the same. Rachel Margis heads into her senior season leading the women’s team. The Racine native has finished in the top-three four times at the league meet in her first three years and holds the school record on the one-meter board. Anna Percival also enters her senior season, while three freshmen (Cassidy Pilo, Carley Thomas and Kendra Wolf) all join the ranks this season. Meanwhile, the men’s team has also done remarkably well over the years. The Panthers do lose K.J. Heger (three-time league diver of the year, five time league champion, owns all three school records) to graduation, but three returners figure to play key roles in the scoring this season. Andres Villa enters his senior season after earning first-team all-league honors on both boards last year. Draven Feustel and Marcel Harris return after solid freshman campaigns. A Look Back At Last Year The 2014-15 season was another one for the record books for Milwaukee. Both teams capped the season with outstanding finishes at the Horizon League Championships, bringing home both runner-up trophies. That marks the fifth time in the last six years Milwaukee has won league trophies on both sides, including bringing home five league championships in that span. Individually, the Panthers broke a whopping nine school records last season and an additional two freshman records. Quite a few of those records were broken at the league meet, where Milwaukee won seven league titles. Up Next Milwaukee now has just under a month to prepare for the Horizon League Championships. The fourday meet starts on Wednesday, Feb. 24 hosted this year by Oakland.
Rachel Margis broke her own school record in one-meter diving as the Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team cruised to a 182-118 win over the University of Chicago Saturday from the Myers-McLoraine Pool. The Panthers won 10 of the 16 events on the day, including both diving events by Margis in a career day for the senior.
