HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR DORM or apartment its months into college and things are getting a little cluddered? College apartments and dorm rooms are famous for being ridiculously small. With a little creativity, and planning, you can find ways to make more room for yourself-and your stuff. Most of you don’t have things that serves only one function and takes up more space than needed. Sure, a plug-in grilled cheese maker seems cool, but it takes up space and can only do one thing. Make sure that each item you need has more than one function. When planning out your space having a speaker system for your iPod that charges it at the same time helps keep your space efficient. Share with your roommates like having a printer that prints but also scans and copies that you can all use. Have the same blanket that you use to take out for sporting events as your bed cover as well. You spend alot of money for your small space and you should enjoy it. Living in a chaos is less productive for you and your roomates. Think of the things you’ll really need at any time and how often you use them. True, you may love to burn CDs with your favorite music. Instead of using CDs and DVD for your needed computer files, downsize with a simple zipdrive. If you must have blank CDs, reduce them to only a handful and keep all computer “needs” in one container. Sharing with your roommates is key. Do you really need two printers? Two minifridges? Coffee makers? Sometimes this can get you into disputs over decaf or regular coffee, that was my pizza. Communication is crazy important when maximizing space to help make you and your roomates space more organized and efficient. Most likely, you and your roommate can make things work out by sharing some of the most important stuff. Empty spaces can be used as decorative storage. Get rid of the old school plastic bins that end up piled in the corner. Now adays, you can go and pick up storage bins that have colorful style and function. Think of using them as style features. Use a small box to store remotes and magazines on your coffee table. A trunk can be a great coffee or side table. Your bed takes up a ton of space and has a great amount of space to fill underneath. In the back where you can’t reach as easy put your summer clothes, and other things you need but use infrequently. Keeping things organized as often as you can will bring peace to your state of mind. Keeping a space organized and clean will actually make your small dorm or apartment seem much larger. With so much to do and so little time, getting organized for the move to college can be a bit overwhelming. But the Bed Bath & Beyond checklist has got you covered. Whether shopping in-store or on-line, our checklist has all your college necessities from twin extra long sheets, to desk lamps, to dorm-appropriate cookware. Print it out or view it, our checklist has all the products and decorating stuff you need to make your college shopping experience a breeze. www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/registry/campuschecklist/ February 2017 the RED xpress

kick-start<<page 1 should feel good and be clean, but also delicious. How you take care of your body should feel good because especially after something like a breakup or a baby you want to feel your best. To feel your best you really have to take good care of your body so you are your best self. But once you’ve got the self-love down, it’s time to batten down the hatches and detox. Davis stresses that the most important part of getting prepped for the new year is to eliminate the junk from your system. “This means no caffeine, added sugar (or fake sweeteners), alcohol, gluten, processed oils and butters, red meat, soy, dairy and shellfish,” she says. “And, try to sweat as much as possible during your detox to get rid of toxins. Go to a steam room or sauna or, better yet, get to an infrared sweat lodge. Finally, start your day with hot lemon water to flush your system and aid in digestion.” Now without further ado, let’s get to the recipes—they’re organized by mealtime, but feel free to mix and match however you like. It’s your detox, why not go a little crazy? Breakfast: Rice cake with almond butter and sliced banana and cinnamon. Two hard-boiled eggs with a pinch of salt and 1/2 cup of berries. Egg Scramble: Sauté one whole egg and one egg white with spinach. Top with 1/4 avocado and side of gluten-free toast. Immersion World Tour 2017

Brit Floyd is coming to Wisconsin

The hotly anticipated rock event of the year returns, as Brit Floyd brings the music of Pink Floyd to life once again with its lavish new stage show, ‘Pink Floyd Immersion World Tour 2017’. The spectacle of a Pink Floyd concert experience is truly recaptured in high-definition sound, and with a stunning million dollar light show and state of the art video design. As well as performing the favourite moments from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and The Division Bell, Brit Floyd will also pay special tribute to the Animals album, in its 40th anniversary year, with a show stopping rendition of ‘Dogs’, as well as a host of other Pink Floyd musical gems. The Brit Floyd show has truly become a phenomenon, widely regarded as the world’s greatest live tribute to Pink Floyd. Faithfully recreating the scale and pomp of the final 1994 Division Bell tour, complete with circle screen and multiple moving light design, lasers, inflatables and theatrics, a Brit Floyd show really is as close as fans will ever get to experiencing the magnificence of a Pink Floyd show live. More than a tribute, it’s as good as they say. Believe the hype and don’t miss it! The new ‘Pink Floyd Immersion’ show promises to be Brit Floyd’s most ambitious and best production yet. ‘The perfect rock show’ - LA Times ‘Magnificent… a musical masterpiece’ - Ticketmaster Brit Floyd show was modeled after Pink Floyd’s light show and they did not disappoint. The 30-foot round video screen was filled with retro animated graphics, short films and pictures that represent each year the songs were released. Amazing guitar, thundering drums, stunning backup vocals, spot-on keyboards and sound effects would generally be all one could ask for in a live show - Brit Floyd brings it all. The light show was spectacular. Lights beaming from the floor, ceiling and all around the stage. Lasers and smoke added to the real Floyd feeling.Vivid and bright. The music did strike a powerful chord in the audience and the vocals and background singers were nothing less than spot on. The whole show was masterfully scripted and executed in a sold out venue. The three-hour show was an amazing combination of Pink Floyd’s entire career from 1967 to 1994. They played the true Floyd favorites and added a few of the lesser known songs. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd or love an over the top show, you will not be dissapointed.

PROPOSED BADGER PROMISE PROGRAM WOULD CUT TUITION FOR STATE’S FIRSTGENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS The University of Wisconsin–Madison is announcing two new efforts to help ensure it is accessible and affordable to transfer students from across the state. The first effort involves updating transfer contracts between the 14 two-year UW Campuses and UW–Madison. Under the updated contract, UW Colleges students who sign a transfer contract within their first year, maintain a GPA of 3.2 and complete two years of studies earning credits that will transfer to UW–Madison will be ensured admission to UW–Madison. A similar plan is moving forward for students in liberal arts transfer programs at four technical colleges: Madison College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Nicolet College, and the College of Menominee Nation. In addition, if UW–Madison receives sufficient new investment in the 2017-19 biennial budget, UW–Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank is committed to guaranteeing at least one year of tuition free for first-generation Wisconsin students transferring under the new transfer agreement. Under the proposed Badger First-Generation Transfer Promise program, any first-generation Wisconsin resident student entering under the Badger Promise would receive grants that cover at least one year of tuition at UW–Madison. And, those who are Pell Grant eligible would have two full years of tuition covered. “Providing greater access and affordability to Wisconsin residents is a shared priority of our campus, our Regents and state leaders, and we believe that the Badger Promise helps achieve that goal,” UW–Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank says. “The enhanced transfer contracts and commitment to provide aid for first-generation students gives Wisconsin families greater access to one of the top research and academic institutions in the world.” Students completing their studies within four years (eight semesters), split between a transfer contract school and UW–Madison, would be able to earn a UW–Madison degree for less than $22,000 in tuition and fee costs – approximately half the cost of a four-year program of studies at UW–Madison for in-state undergraduates. For those demonstrating Pell Grant eligibility, the costs would be even lower, since their final two years (four semesters) of study would be tuition free at UW–Madison. “We’re very excited about this new level of partnership, further strengthening the relationship between UW–Madison and UW Colleges, and equally so our relationship with the Wisconsin Technical Colleges,” UW–Madison Provost Sarah Mangelsdorf says. “The program provides an opportunity to serve a very important population of students and increase the number of bachelor’s degrees granted statewide.” UW Colleges and UW Extension Chancellor Cathy Sandeen says the program addresses the needs of a critical set of students. “As a first-generation college graduate myself, and chancellor of the UW institution with the highest proportion of first-generation students, I applaud UW–Madison’s proposal to provide tuition-free education for UW Colleges transfer students. Affordability is a critical issue for students today. This program is one step in the right direction,” Sandeen says. Blank says directing aid to first-generation students will increase the skill level of the Wisconsin workforce. “These are exactly the students we want to finish their degrees and succeed if we are going to increase the skill levels of Wisconsin’s working adults,” Blank says. “I’m hearing support for providing additional dollars to higher education in the upcoming budget, and hope that UW–Madison will receive funds to allow us to launch this program.” The transfer pathway at UW–Madison represents a vital component of UW’s commitment to the state, she adds. Transfer students at UW–Madison are 70 percent more likely to be first-generation college students than students admitted as new freshman. The Division of Enrollment Management and other key campus stakeholders at UW–Madison look forward to greater collaboration with their partners at the UW Colleges and Wisconsin Technical Colleges to provide advising and assistance to students once they have signed the transfer contract.

OPINIONS

IT ISN’T RICH VS POOR

Its Spenders vs Savers B.D. Understanding the problems we face in our economy is very simple – we spend more than we have. This problem is not created by government. Government is simply a reflection of how most of us live. Politicians are looking to get re-elected so their motivation is simply to garner votes and they know being a spendthrift is not the way to do this. Promise the world while claiming economic frugality is the magic formula. The political parties like to break it down to the rich versus the poor, but it is really the spenders versus the savers. Unfortunately, the spenders vastly out number the savers in this country so we will have a problem for some time to come. These groups exist in all economic spheres. There are people with very little money who are very responsible savers and people with oodles of money who still manage to spend more than they have. When the political candidates talk about how they are going to tackle the economic issues, they are talking about deficit spending to solve these problems. In other words, they are borrowing money to create a false sense of temporary economic growth. The republicans are for giving the borrowed money to rich folks because they believe they drive the economy, whereas democrats want to give the borrowed money to middle class folks. Either way, it is the equivalent of extending your credit limit from $10,000 to $50,000. It’s great for awhile until the bill comes due. And, then, is not only the $50,000 hard to stomach but the accumulated interest really makes you depressed. Savers always pay for the spenders. That is the tragedy in all of this. Whether it be someone who takes out a home loan they know they can’t afford, a hedge fund manager who is running a ponzi scheme or a low income person scamming the welfare system, the savers pay. The savers pay through higher rates, higher taxes, less services, etc. The debt does not fall into a black hole. It is absorbed by the people who live responsibly within their means. Unfortunately, there are less and less in this group. You know which category you fall in. If you don’t here are some indications that might help. Are you the person who never seems to land on his feet in difficult times? Are you the person that buys the big screen tv instead of saving his tax refund. Are you the person that complains about entitlement spending while running to your parents every time you’re in financial trouble? Are you the person living paycheck to paycheck always paying your bills late? Are you the person who believes that material things will somehow fill the void in your life? Are you the person who always shorts the check when you go out with a group of friends? If you answered yes to one or all of these you probably fall into the spender category. Saving has become a dirty word in our society. Saving is equated with cheap and not smart.

February 2017 the RED xpress

SPORTS lucus<<page 1 Sunday matinee at the Kohl Center. During the practice itself, when the starters were on defense and matched against the scout team, Happ would stand under the basket and hoist shots with his left and right hand on either side of the rim during stoppages. He wasn’t merely amusing himself, either. There was a method to it all. “I don’t want to make too big of a deal out of it,” Happ pleaded. “But I think the more you have the ball in your hands and you’re putting yourself in awkward positions under the hoop like that, even if you’re just kind of fooling around during practice, it helps.” It’s all about building muscle memory. “The more repetitions — reverses with your left hand or awkward spins with your right hand — it’s going to help,” he reiterated. Men’s basketball vs. Rutgers 2017 Ethan Happ Madison Square Garden The Hoosiers tried to control Happ by rotating three different low-post defenders: 6-foot-10 Thomas Bryant, 6-10 De’Ron Davis and 6-7 Juwan Morgan. They all took their turns with little success. Happ still made 8-of-10 shots and scored 20 points in Wisconsin’s 65-60 win at the Kohl Center. “He’s crafty,” said CBS analyst Clark Kellogg, who was courtside for Sunday’s game. “There’s a knack for finishing inside. It’s a combination of skills. It’s hands. It’s footwork. It’s strength. But it’s also knowing where you are (in relationship to the ball), where the basket is and where the defender is. “A lot of times guys don’t handle all three of those. Sometimes guys will know where the defender is, know where the ball is and they forget where the basket is. He does all three. He knows where his defender is. He feels him. He finds him. And he knows where the hoop is.” Then it becomes a matter of finishing. “And,” Kellogg said of Happ, “he has got the ability with both hands to finish.” The 6-8, 225-pound Kellogg knows his way around the rim. During his three seasons at Ohio State — 86 career games — he averaged a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds). In 1982, he was the Most Valuable Player in the Big Ten. That same year, he was a No. 1 draft pick of the Indiana Pacers. When asked about Happ’s ball-handling skills, especially since they’re outside the norm for someone 6-10, Kellogg noted, “Part of that is how he developed as a player. He was a point guard until he was about a sophomore in high school and then he had a pretty significant growth spurt. “So, those instincts that you have as a ball handler, even though you’re a little taller, they don’t go away. They might go dormant as you adjust to a new position. But they don’t go away. Those have resurfaced with his ability to score. And he has been better finishing inside more so than he was.” Kellogg agreed that Happ has begun to slow down the process with his back to the basket. “That would be one way to look at it — that you realize you’ve got a little more time,” he said. “It’s maturity; not being so emotionally tied to the ball going in and still knowing you can produce even though you might go through a period where you might miss some shots. Continue to stay the course.” Is Happ in the discussion for Player of the Year in the Big Ten? “Oh, no question, no question,” Kellogg said. “It’s going to be hard to overcome Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan who has got 20 double-doubles. That kind of individual consistency and brilliance, to me, is what the Player of the Year is about. But Happ is right there with Maryland’s Melo Trimble.” On Monday morning, ESPN’s Jay Bilas, one of the most accomplished and respected analysts in college basketball, hit send on this tweet: “Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ is the best defender I’ve seen all season. To this point, he’s the leader for National Defensive Player of the Year.” The testimonials from Kellogg and Bilas are heady stuff for Happ who found himself on another list last week, a list of 10 finalists for the 2017 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award. As a UW senior, Frank Kaminsky won it in 2015 on his way to being the consensus National Player of the Year. Happ has seen old videos of Abdul-Jabbar. “He had the goggles, right?” inquired Happ, who related how his dad through a friend of a friend wound up with some sweat pants that once belonged to Kareem. But he went on to say that they were stored in the basement and the mice got to them. “We have them. They just have holes in them.” Right now, there aren’t many holes in Happ’s game save from the free throw line. Overall, he’s shooting 50 percent (51-of-101), down from last season’s mark of 64 percent. Repetitions are part of the equation for success at the stripe, according to 10 the RED xpress February 2017

Kellogg who shot 77 percent from the line at Ohio State. “You have to get to the point of trusting your mechanics,” said Kellogg, who had a limited NBA career because of chronic knee problems. “I always say if you take good shots, you have good mechanics and you’re on balance, the percentages are going to be with you. It’s the same at the foul line.” Even with his wide frame of reference as one of the voices/faces of March Madness on CBS, the 55-year-old Kellogg was hard-pressed to come up with someone who has a similar playing style to Happ. “There’s no one that jumps to mind with that consistent relentlessness,” he conceded. •••• Joakim Noah. That name was dropped by Wisconsin basketball strength and conditioning coach Erik Helland, a 25-year veteran of the NBA and Chicago Bulls. “I think Ethan plays at a very similar pace to Joakim,” he said. “Honestly, he has a difficult time playing at a slow pace. He’s always active. Just like Joakim.” Because of that activity, the non-stop motor, to be cliché, Helland said, “That’s a huge reason why Ethan is effective. He typically outworks people. They’ll take a little break and, all of a sudden, he’s by you … he goes and he’s going at a different speed than everybody else.” The 6-11, 230-pound Noah played on back-to-back national championship teams at Florida before going in the first round (No. 9) of the 2007 draft to the Bulls. A twotime all-star, Noah was selected as the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. Noah, 34, is now with the New York Knicks. “They’re similar in stature and in terms of how they play, their style of play, their versatility,” Helland said. “Ethan is a terrific passer and he handles the ball well, a lot like Joakim did. When he was Ethan’s age, he didn’t have a reliable jump shot, either. But he developed it over the years. “I think Ethan will probably develop one over those same lines. Sooner or later, whether it’s pretty or not, he’s going to be a threat and he’ll be able to make a 15-foot jumper when he’s open.” Men’s basketball vs. Syracuse 2016 Ethan Happ carried by teammates Zak Showalter, Aaron Moesch, Alex Illikainen During practices, there will be competitions among the UW players whereby the losers must run a series of sprints from boundary to boundary. Maybe it’s the starters or rotation. Maybe it’s the scout team. Maybe it’s individuals for turning over the ball or missing free throws. Happ runs … win or lose. “He does it all the time,” Helland said. “I don’t think he ever misses.” “I think his reasoning is two-fold,” head coach Greg Gard explained. “Number one, he loves the conditioning and prides himself on being in great shape. But the more telling tale is that he wants to be there for his teammates that have to run. He wants to show that he is no better than anyone. It’s a team-bonding thing in his mind.” Happ again prefaced his explanation saying, “I don’t really want to make a big deal out of that.” But he added, “If I saw a teammate do that, running every time, I would think, ‘He’s with us no matter what, high or low. He’s a guy that you can lean on. He’s down with us.’” Happ doesn’t seem to slow down, though. The frenetic pace is part of his makeup. If anybody were to come into our practice, you’d see that he practices at that pace as well,” Helland said. “That’s important because it’s not something you can flip a switch at game time and go, ‘I’m going to play hard.’ You train yourself so when you go into a game it’s just normal speed.” Men’s basketball vs. Rutgers 2017 Ethan Happ Madison Square Garden Helland brought up Noah again. “It’s more how their brains work,” he said. “They’re always active, they’re always moving.” Happ is just scratching the surface, too, Helland suggested, on some of his physical gifts. “He’s deceptively strong,” Helland said. “And this is something I’m trying to get across to Ethan, he’s also deceptively athletic in a vertical sense. He’s not using a lot of it right now. As you see him develop, I’d like to see him have the ability to finish over the top of people. “He’s already got terrific feet. He’s quick … and he’s willing to expend energy, which is a big deal. He gets into people’s motors. I would almost equate him to a wrestler in that he tries to push that conditioning envelope on people and there comes a point where they can’t keep up.” While there may be varying opinions on whether there is a true match for Happ in terms of his unique playing style — especially since 230 of his 234 field goal attempts have been initiated around the rim — he has struck a POY chord with television analysts and opposing coaches in the Big Ten. “He’s a terrific player,” Illinois head coach John Groce said last week in Champaign. “He’s continued to get better every year. Very, very physical. Finishes with either hand … In our league, I can tell you everyone respects the heck out of him.” The ultimate endorsement for a competitor.
