 Simple Ways to Improve Your Gut Microbiome (and Why it Matters)

Whether we are aware of it or not, over 100 trillion microbial cells live in our gut, making up our gut microbiome, which plays an essential role in our health. There are many things that we do that can either improve our gut microbiome or make it worse. Knowing the things that can help improve it can be crucial to improving one’s health and wellness, and the good news is that there are simple things that everyone can do to make improvements.

“Many people are now starting to learn about their gut microbiome and how they can influence the health of it,” explains Jennifer Scherer, a registered dietitian nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, certified personal trainer, and owner of Fredericksburg Fitness Studio. “This is great news because we can make meaningful improvements in our health by giving it some attention.”

In the journal Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology, researchers report that our gut microbiome influences human physiology, metabolism, nutrition, and immune function and has been linked to such conditions as inflammatory bowel disease. In another study published in the journal Nutrients, researchers

report that the gut microbiome plays a vital role in human health and influences the development of chronic diseases. We know the critical part of the gut microbiome in our lives, but we must know what steps to take to improve it.

Here are 5 ways to improve your gut microbiome:

•Add more fiber. Adding more fiber to the diet will help feed the good bacteria and provide other health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should aim to get around 25 grams per day of fiber, and men should aim for about 38 grams per day. Fiber is only found in plant-based foods or supplements.

•Reduce stress. When stressed out, people tend to eat more unhealthy foods, which feed the harmful bacteria in the gut. Take measures to keep stress down, finding something you enjoy doing, such as reading, yoga, meditation, exercising, etc.

•Eat a variety. Getting a lot of different plant foods is an ideal way to improve the gut microbiome. Aim to eat many different kinds of plants each week, or try to “eat the rainbow” to get a variety of colors in your diet from plants. The plants feed the good bacteria and are packed with nutrients and antioxidants.

•Take a probiotic. In the journal Molecules, researchers report that probiotics are beneficial and can change the composition of the flora. They report that taking probiotics has become an extremely effective way to improve human immunity by regulating the gut microbiome. They further say that probiotics can improve people’s lives.

•Consume fermented foods. Stanford Medicine reports that eating a diet rich in fermented foods boosts the microbiome. Fermented foods include kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, yogurt, and kefir. In their study, adding fermented foods to the diet was even more potent for improving gut microbiota than increasing fiber intake.

“Even making small changes in this area can help improve your gut microbiome,” added Scherer. “At first, you have to think about it, and then doing these things becomes second nature.”

Scherer is a registered dietitian who works to help people improve their diet, plan for sustainable weight loss, and offer ways to incorporate healthier food choices. What Plants & Trees Are Best To Plant In My Yard?

Dear EarthTalk: I would like to plant a few new trees in my backyard, and am looking for guidance on which species are native and would benefit the local ecosystem. Where can I find this kind of information?

Home gardening is a great way to spend time outside, improve local ecosystems and learn more about botany and plants. When it comes to household gardening, natives are the key to success. Planting native species has numer-

ous benefits, including providing food and habitat for native species, especially pollinators. Another important benefit is that native trees will thrive and spread naturally if they are planted in their native environment and suitable climate.

If you choose the plants and trees in your yard carefully you can beautify your surroundings and help increase biodiversity.

In order to plant the most well-suited flora for your garden to support a holistic, healthy ecosystem, here are some general principles to follow. As previously mentioned, go native! Secondly, look for pollinator friendly species. On a similar note, it could help to do some research on what species, both flora and fauna, are endangered or threatened in your area. Planting threatened tree species can help to support and grow their population numbers. Similarly, finding out which animal species are threatened and planting trees that could be beneficial to their survival would also be beneficial to supporting the local ecosystem. Finally, planting a variety of trees is a great way to support local biodiversity. High biodiversity levels support healthy, productive ecosystems.

Finding just the right species that ticks off all the boxes can be a daunting task. Luckily, there is a plethora of tools out there that can help. For example, Tree Wizard is a tool that helps find tree species that are suitable for specific climates and soil types. Another useful tool is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Climate Change Tree Atlas. This tool specifically looks at how different species’ suitable ranges will change as a result of rising temperatures. This is a helpful tool for determining what tree species will thrive in the future in your area. You can also do research on which species are native to your specific state or region. Most states have an inventory of native trees available through their Department of Natural Resources, as well as an inventory of native animal species.

The bottom line is that planting trees, especially native ones, is massively beneficial to the ecosystem, and is an important step in fighting climate change. Trees provide major ecosystem services, especially carbon sequestration (removing carbon from the air). Trees store large amounts of carbon, and planting large numbers of them can create carbon sinks (defined as anything that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases), decreasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Other ecosystem services provided by trees include increases in biodiversity, support for local populations, and protecting soils from erosion and chemical runoff, which can help to keep water sources clean. Trees are the key to our future, so it is crucial that we do it right!

Personalizing your approach to weight loss — from working with a coach to starting a daily food log — is key to effective and sustainable change.

Ever tried to follow a celebrity’s “what I eat in a day” or adopt a friend’s fitness regimen? If you have (and were left feeling exhausted and/or hungry), you know there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to building a health routine — and that’s especially true for weight management.

So how do you go about finding solutions that are right for ‌you‌?

“It’s not about following anyone else’s standards,” says Noom behaviorchange coach Yasmin Essa, who is board certified in holistic health coaching by the American Association for Drugless Practitioners. “Weight loss is a personal topic and requires personalization to be sustainable. Many [people] start a diet because it works for a friend or their favorite celebrity. The results tend to be short-lived because it needs more personalization.”

According to Essa, “without personalization, health goals do not stick longterm [because] personalization considers the ebbs and flows of a person’s everyday life.” By crafting a weight-loss plan around your specific lifestyle and unique routine, you’ll be much more likely to succeed without feeling worn out or restricted.

2. Keep a Daily Food Log

Another simple way to personalize your weight-loss journey is by tracking your food intake. According to Essa, logging your bites can help foster selfawareness and gauge your progress, which is key to effective change.

Daily food logging also allows you to get curious about what’s working and what isn’t — and Noom makes tracking totally accessible. “The app will share insights and guide [users] based on what they log,” Essa says, and coaches help facilitate open dialogue about how your eating habits affect your holistic health.

3. Understand Your Own Eating Habits

Getting comfortable discussing your food log with a coach — whether that’s a friend, family member or Noom specialist — may help you understand your overall health in a new way. “Food is very personal,” Essa says. “Food elicits childhood memories, connects strangers and is the cornerstone of culture.”

And why is it important to you? “From there, it’s about reverse engineering it,” she says. “Consider if your goal needs to change or if you need a little outside help to uncover blind spots.” Maybe your goal is solid, but you need help building habits. Maybe it feels unattainable, and you need a dose of positivity. “One of my favorite questions to ask [Noom] users is, ‘Are you enjoying this? Does this feel like something you can do long-term? If not, what has to change?’” Essa says.

If a mid-afternoon chocolate fix is the highlight of your day, keep it on rotation. If you’re feeling sluggish every time you hit the gym, try scaling back a bit or going at a different time of day. “The key is to set smart goals and understand that failures are not a weakness, rather an opportunity,” Essa says. Ultimately, the journey is yours to experience — and finding ways to personalize it might just encourage longer-lasting habits.

The Personal Diet Study is an ongoing clinical trial that aims to compare two weight loss diets: a onesize-fits-all, calorie-restricted, lowfat diet (Standardized) versus a diet having the same calorie restriction but utilizing a machine learning algorithm to predict and reduce PPGR (Personalized). Both groups receive the same behavioral counseling to enhance weight loss self-efficacy. Both groups self-monitor dietary intake using a mobile app, with Standardized receiving real-time feedback on calories and macronutrient distribution, and Personalized receiving real time feedback on calories, macronutrient distribution, and predicted PPGR. We examined changes in self-efficacy between baseline and 3 mos, using the 20-item Weight Efficacy Lifestyle questionnaire (WEL).

Know What To Ask When Choosing An Eye Surgeon

Your vision is priceless. When you or a loved one need medical, surgical or laser treatment for anything from cataracts and glaucoma to macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, how do you decide whom to trust? We turned to Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthalmology practice, for suggestions on what to ask when choosing a surgeon for cataract surgery, macular degeneration or diabetic eye disease injections, laser treatment, or other major eye concerns.

How long have they been practicing?

Brett Rhode, MD: Look at the individual doctor’s years of experience, when the entire practice was founded, and its size. For example, Eye Care Specialists was founded in 1985 by cataract surgery pioneers Drs. Norman Cohen and Robert Sucher, and I came on board in 1996. Since then, our medical team has grown to provide care for nearly every eye condition to more than 200,000 people at three locations.

In addition to cataract operations, our surgeons have performed countless other procedures requiring equal or greater expertise, including eye muscle surgeries, corneal transplants, retinal repairs, lid repairs, and laser and medication injection treatment. Where do they perform most procedures?

Michael Raciti, MD: Whenever medically appropriate and possible, our doctors perform diagnostic and treatment procedures in-office for patient convenience and cost-effectiveness. This includes corneal topography mapping to determine the best surgical technique and customized lens implant to utilize for cataract surgery, inner eye medication injections to preserve vision in diabetic and macular degeneration patients, and OCT laser scanning to detect, track and treat sight-threatening conditions, often before vision loss occurs. More complex procedures are conducted at the Eye Surgery & Laser Center of Wisconsin or the Envision Surgery Center. These outpatient centers have some of the most advanced technology available in a comfortable environment with a handpicked team of nurses who specialize in eye surgery. Coffee Can Be Good for Your Brain

Unless You’re Making These 4 Mistakes

Coffee boasts plenty of brain benefits, but mistakes like adding too much sugar could negate them.

Your morning coffee boasts big benefits for your brain.

In addition to improving alertness, concentration and mood, coffee may also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, says Nina Riggins MD, PhD, director of the Headache and Traumatic Brain Injury Center at University of California San Diego and member of the American Neurological Association.

What’s more, moderate coffee drinking may lower your risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, according to an April 2017 review in Archives of Medical Science

And all these benefits can be yours as long as you drink your java the right way. Yep, there’s a right and wrong way to do it. And the latter can be a health hazard for your brain.

Here, Dr. Riggins discusses common coffee mistakes that may be minimizing your cognitive abilities, plus what to do instead to keep your brain in brilliant shape.

1. Drinking Too Much

While in moderation coffee may have protective properties for brain health, in excess it could cause more harm than good.

Case in point: A June 2021 Nutritional Neuroscience study found that drinking more than six cups of coffee a day was associated with smaller total brain volumes and a 53 percent increased risk of dementia.

Milligrams of Caffeine Are in a Cup of Coffee?

Fix it: For healthy adults, 400 milligrams of caffeine a day is considered generally safe, according to the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration, which is about four cups of home-brewed coffee. So stick to that amount or less (and don’t forget to take into account the caffeine you may be getting from other sources, such as caffeinated tea, energy drinks and chocolate).

2. Drinking It Too Late in the Day

You might look to energy-boosting caffeine to help you manage the midday slump, but that late-day cup of joe may make you too jittery to wind down come bedtime.

That’s because caffeine — which is a stimulant — remains in your bloodstream long after you’ve taken your last sip.

Caffeine’s half-life is approximately five hours, Dr. Riggins says. That means it can take up to twice the time — 10 hours — to totally clear from your system. Which is why drinking coffee later in the day can be problematic for sleep.

And here’s the thing: Poor sleep isn’t good for brain health. Skimping on shut-eye can lead to issues with learning, focusing and reacting, per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

And over time, sleepless nights may even increase the buildup of beta-amyloid, a protein in the brain linked to impaired cognition and Alzheimer’s disease, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Fix it: Dr. Riggins recommends avoiding caffeine use for at least six hours before bedtime.

3. Spooning in a Lot of Sugar

If you take your coffee sweet, you might not be doing your brain any favors.

Are You Eating Superfoods For Your Brain?

As a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist and Neurofeedback Clinician, I love to nudge my clients into healthier eating habits, especially when it comes to protecting their brains. Who likes living with brain fog, memory lapses, poor attention, and focus? But that’s exactly what the SAD (Standard American Diet) diet leads to an inflamed brain, leaving you feeling exhausted, with little or no motivation to do anything. Sugar, processed foods, gluten grains, and damaged man-altered fats lead not only to diabetes in the body but can also mess up your blood sugars in the brain.

Many doctors now consider Alzheimer’s to be Type III diabetes or diabetes of the brain. Crazy to think you may actually slowly be poisoning your noggin (as my boss likes to say), with your food choices!

Changing your diet is hard, but instead of thinking of having to eliminate foods, first focus on adding brain-healthy foods into your diet. I’m going to give you a list of brain superfoods, and I challenge you to add just 1, maybe 2 each

day. And no, you don’t have to run to the ends of the earth to get these foods! Check out your local supermarket, but go organic as much as you can!

1. Wild Caught Salmon

Salmon is rich in the healthy fats called Omega 3 fatty acids, typically DHA and EPA. These wonderful fats serve as building blocks for the brain but are also associated with a decrease in inflammation, depression, and cognitive impairment. They are my first go-to when I see a client with high inflammation levels on their brain map. We can also test for a person’s Omega status through a simple blood prick. Salmon also contains selenium, antioxidants, potassium, and B12. So instead of your normal fish fry, make Friday night Salmon night!

2. Wild Organic BlueBerries

They provide powerful antioxidants galore! These beautiful berries have been shown to reduce the risk of memory decline by preventing age-related degenerative processes in the brain. Research indicates that blueberries may have beneficial effects on spatial learning and memory abilities, reducing your risk for Alzheimer’s. Go on, throw a cup of organic wild blueberries into your breakfast smoothie. They are readily available in Costco and Trader Joe’s.

3. Organic Leafy Green Veggies and Herbs

I know, not your favorite, but these are the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, and should adorn your meals daily. These are packed with brain-healthy vitamins and minerals. When it comes to the brain, reducing inflammation is your number one goal, and that’s exactly what greens do.

One of my heroes is the humble cabbage, which protects the gut and bowel lining and thus supports the brain. But whatever green you like, whether it’s kale, broccoli (broccoli sprouts are the ultimate superhero), spinach, arugula, bok choi, chard, parsley, or cilantro, chow down!!!

4. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are brain-boosting powerhouses. They make the most perfect snack! I like to mix a large variety of nuts and seeds, which I then store in glass jars in the freezer for easy use and exact portioning. I use a small glass container which I fill with my nut mix and carry it with me for a healthy brain snack. But you can also throw them on salads, into shakes, make pesto, or use them as nut/ seed butter.

Hot Power Yoga FAQS

What are the benefits of practicing in a hot room?

The heat helps your muscles and connective tissue to become more elastic, allowing you to experience deeper levels of stretching with less risk of injury. It encourages sweating, which stimulates the release of toxins and flushes them from the body. Practicing in heat also increases the heart rate and strengthens the cardiovascular system.

How hot is the studio?

The temperature in the studio will be between 90 and 95 degrees, with elevated humidity. As a new student, you may find the heat very intense at first. Please remember to pace yourself and take resting poses when necessary. Drinking lots of water and bringing a full length towel to class will also help to keep you more comfortable in the heat.

What if I am not flexible?

It is a common misconception that you need to be flexible to do yoga. Yoga is for everyone, whether you can touch your toes or not. Our classes are accessible to all types of students: the stiff and limber, strong and weak. The poses are designed to enhance both strength and flexibility over time. Come as you are!

Will this class be challenging?

Yes! Power Yoga is a much more challenging cardiovascular workout than most people assume. Regardless of ones yoga experience and athletic ability, our classes will challenge every individual. We encourage students to work at their own pace and our instructors offer modifications and variations for each pose to make the classes accessible to all levels of students.

How often should I practice?

As with anything, the more you practice, the more you benefit. If you are new to this practice we encourage you to attend as many classes as possible in your first month. This will help you to learn the basics, acclimate to the heat, and build a strong foundation for your yoga practice. After you have built the foundation for your practice, we recommend committing to a practice of 3-4 times per week if possible. Even if you can only fit in one class in a week you will see and feel the benefits.

When will I see results?

In just a few classes you should start to notice progress and begin to build strength, flexibility, focus and stamina. Initially, you are most likely going to experience some soreness in your muscles after your practice. This is a good thing! It means your body is changing, and it is already growing stronger. With a dedication to your practice you can expect to see a transformation in your body, mind, and overall health. But don’t take our word for it; try your first class today!

What is the minimum required age to participate?

Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Students under the age of 18 who plan to attend class without a parent or guardian present will need to bring a signed release form upon first visit to the studio. You can print this form here.

Can I still practice yoga if I am pregnant?

Yes, you can practice yoga when you’re expecting. Many women find yoga to be a very beneficial practice during pregnancy. However, because of the specific style of yoga that we offer at Milwaukee Power Yoga, and the heat and intensity of the practice, our classes are not recommended for pregnant women. We suggest choosing a specific prenatal class, or a more gentle style of yoga during pregnancy.

Can I practice yoga if I am recovering from an injury?

What Are The Health Benefits of Antioxidants What Foods Are High In Them?

Keeping healthy and fighting disease is what your body’s immune system is all about. What does your body use as weapons in the arsenal to stave off the toxins you’re exposed to every day? Antioxidants. This may sound too New Age-y for you, but many in conventional Western medicine acknowledge the importance of getting sufficient antioxidants from your diet or by other means.

How do antioxidants work? Antioxidants donate electrons to these free radicals, rendering them harmless, without becoming free radicals themselves. They serve to defend your cells from damage and resist the effects of exposure to pollutants and other toxins.

Foods that are high in antioxidants include: Vegetables. Most of the vegetables you eat, especially green leafy ones, are loaded with plant compounds that act as antioxidants. Kale, mustard greens, and spinach, for example, are good sources of vitamin E and other antioxidants. Re-

member that to maximize the antioxidants in vegetables, you have to eat them in a raw, unprocessed, and fresh state.

Fruit. Fresh berries like raspberries, blueberries, and cranberries are good antioxidant sources. They contain lots of vitamin C and carotenoids, as well as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Nuts. Raw Pecans, walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts have antioxidants that can boost your heart and overall health. It should be noted that some grocery store nuts are irradiated to prevent germination and should be avoided. Also, you should know that peanuts aren’t on this list. They aren’t even really a nut! They’re legumes, and related more to beans and peas.

Green tea. Green tea has compounds that lower your risk for heart attack and stroke, plus much more.

Herbs and spices. Consider putting together a herb garden to go along with those veggies. Herbs and spices are an abundant source of antioxidants. Some options are ginger, garlic, cloves, cinnamon, and turmeric,. Look for fresh products, as they are have higher antioxidant levels than processed and powdered versions. The antioxidant activity of fresh garlic is stronger than dry garlic powder, for example.

Sprouts are great sources of antioxidants. Live in a high-rise and can’t grow a garden? Well, if you have about a little spare counter space in your kitchen, you can be a successful sprout farmer. You can even grow them in jars.

Like a lot of people their age, an Iowa couple had their fair share of doctor’s visits. Their Medicare supplement plan paid all the bills and the each paid a little over $150 a month for the coverage. But when they were approached about a Medicare Advantage plan that did not have a monthly fee, they jumped at the opportunity to save money.

What they did not realize was that, as a couple, the new plan would cost them nearly $10,000 a year in co-pays and co-insurance, plus additional out-of-pocket cost for some of their prescriptions!

Brushing the hair and teeth is routine self-care for most people, but many haven’t heard of skin brushing. Dry skin brushing uses a brush on dry skin in a specific pattern to stimulate the lymphatic system. It has the potential to not only help your skin feel softer and smooth cellulite, but it can also produce a ripple effect of even greater health benefits, such as strengthening the immune system.

Detoxification: The lymphatic system plays a critical role in the body’s immune system by transporting the lymph, a colorless fluid containing white blood cells. Because lymph vessels run just beneath the skin, dry brushing stimulates lymphatic flow, and helps the body detoxify itself naturally.

Exfoliation: Lightly sweeping a natural bristled brush over the skin helps loosen and remove dead skin cells, making dry brushing one of the simplest and most natural ways to exfoliate the skin.

The Problems with Some Other Treatment Options

We’ve waited all year for summer to begin and it’s finally here with a bang. But as summer heats up let’s remember some safety issues.

Skin Safety: a summer tan might look good, but it comes with risks. Melanoma (skin cancer) develops from

exposure to ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) produced by the sun. Here are some safety tips:

· Generously apply sunscreen and lip balm at least 30 minutes BEFORE going outside – even on cloudy days.

· Use a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher for both UV-A and UV-B protection.

· Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours (sooner if swimming or sweating).

· Avoid peak sun times (10am-3pm) and stick to shaded areas.

· Wear a hat, light clothing, and sunglasses for eye protection.

· Spend some time in front of the mirror getting to know your body – examine for dark spots and “moles” that change shape, color or appearance, sores that do not heal or are slow to heal.

High Heat Index: older adults and people with lifelong health conditions are often more vulnerable when heat index levels are high. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States. Heat Index is a measure of “how hot it feels.” A heat index above 90 is considered a danger. To prevent heat index injury:

· Avoid the direct sun, especially during the hottest times of the day.

· Drink lots of cold fluids (water). Avoid alcohol, coffee, and sweet drinks.

· Wear light colored loose fitting clothing.

· Eat smaller portion sizes.

· Take several cool/tepid baths or showers during the day. Visit local pools and splash pads to cool down.

· Pull window shades down to block the sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

· Keep cool by using fans and air conditioners. If you do not have AC, visit places with air conditioning. For example: malls, libraries, churches or senior centers.

· Check on friends, family and neighbors who may be at risk for complications during this time.

Older adults can have a tougher time dealing with heat and humidity. Headache, confusion, dizziness and nausea could be signs of a heat related illness. Contact your doctor or emergency department to find out if you need to seek medical care. Until next time, be well and keep your cool.

It is pertinent that we band together to educate families about the little-known harmful effects of growing up in the digital age.

Why is this a problem?

Reversing Postural Decline in the Digital Age is an evidence-based need, rather than “something they’ll outgrow” without intervention. Save your family from the worsening effects of postural decline, which show up as a negative impact on not only how you look, but your entire health and well-being, your confidence, your mood, and your overall success in life! Postural distortion patterns are a common denominator among many pediatric problems. It’s more than just sitting up straight. It’s stimulation of the brain to reverse a decline in the digital age. Neurological disorders can be mistaken for laziness, lack of motivation, lack of focus or being labeled a “bad kid.” There is no pill, potion or lotion that

Summer Moving A Few Things You Should Know To Help Get Ready

Summer is here and you’ve decided your home may be too large, too costly to maintain, too difficult to maintain, too unsafe without expensive safety features to meet your needs, too far from transportation, or too far away from shopping centers and medical offices. Your home has become an inconvenience and now you’ve decided to buy or rent a smaller home or apartment.

It’s a good time to make your next move. Now that the weather has become warmer it makes it easier to get around searching for your next residence.

It’s a challenge to make the move to a new place after all the years you’ve spent creating and taking care of your current home. If you own your home and plan to sell you might want talk to your realtor about a Competitive Market Analysis so you can estimate a selling price. If you are renting and you need some advice on your move you can always find a moving coordinator to help you make the transition. Of course, many people simply choose to rely on family and trusted friends to help them

make a move. You’ve spent your life helping them out, now it’s their turn to help you. We’ve put together some moving tips that should make your move easier.

Seems pretty simple, but consider many things. Would you like to be close to family, friends, shopping centers, healthcare facilities? Will you need to use transportation other than your car? Will you have access to recreational activities? Do you want to climb flights of stairs? Do you want maintenance-free living? Is it secure and safe? Do you need assistance with daily activities? Can you keep your pet? Research new home alternatives long before you make your move. Spend time in the area where you plan to move and get answers to all your questions.

Whether you are moving to a smaller home, apartment, or senior residence you need to downsize your possessions. Sort through your belongings and keep what you absolutely need. Go to the least used rooms and areas first. Sort only a few hours at a time to avoid being overwhelmed. At this time you should create a floor plan of your new living space showing each room and the placement of each piece of furniture. Take measurements of each room. Make a note of doors, windows, outlets. Take measurements of your furniture. Give the remaining items to family and/or friends. Think about having an estate sale, a tag sale or donating belongings to charities (many charities will pick up the items at your home). Keep in mind space limitations. Let family members know what you plan on taking with you. Make a schedule of the times when you expect to have family members, friends, or charities pick up the items. Clearly label all items, use colored stickers to mark what will or will not go to your new home. This will help you remember what goes where when you begin packing.

If you plan on selling your home it’s time to make minor repairs and note major repairs which you should report to your realtor. Small repairs make the home look well cared for and usually cost little time and money. These details make a difference in how the buyer views the home. Itemize cosmetic changes such as fresh paint or new carpets. The home looks ready to move into. Be sure to keep up the exterior maintenance of your home. Remove interior clutter. All of these tips create a favorable impression on a buyer. Renters make sure your apartment is clean and contact your apartment manager to discuss what time your apartment will be shown. Contact your utility companies and let them know what day you plan to move. Fill out change of address forms for the post office seven to ten days before moving day.

Make sure you have phone service at your current home and new home on moving day. Have the name of the contact of your new apartment or senior residence ahead of time. Know the name of the person you need to contact if a situation comes up on moving day.

Living the Peanut Butter Jelly Life in the Sandwich Generation

As a child and an adult, I have enjoyed eating thousands of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. My Mom would make PB&Js for me as a school lunch or an afterschool snack. It was also my first attempt to make a meal on my own. When I was a kid, I knew I could always rely on the comfort and nourishment of a PB&J to help me get through the day.

A PB&J sandwich is a universally cherished food that is rarely appreciated for its symbolic meaning in life. Now in my 50s, I have come to realize the impactful symbolism of PB&Js in my own life as it relates to the complexity of being a member of the sandwich generation.

What Is the Sandwich Generation?

The “sandwich generation” is known as adults with at least one living parent, age 65 and over, and who has at least one child younger than 18 or financially supporting a grown child over the age of 18. This is the perfect description of my current life as I care for my mother, brother and my adult son—a very complex PB&J sandwich: sticky and salty; sweet and smooth; and comforting and protective—respectively, the peanut butter, the jelly, and the bread.

The fact remains that the true essence of a PB&J sandwich, placing peanut butter and jelly between two pieces of bread, lies in a practice meant to reinforce the hardships and rewards of being in the sandwich generation. As a caregiver,

providing financial and emotional support to a parent, sibling and an adult child can be stressful. It has presented challenges and rewards I never dreamed I would experience in my lifetime.

Sticky and Salty—The Peanut Butter

The first ingredient in a PB &J is the peanut butter. Today, with aging parents and young adults attempting to achieve financial independence, middle-aged Americans are facing an increasing number of burdens and responsibilities that can be considered “sticky and salty” as they are pulled in a multitude of directions.

According to a new nationwide Pew Research Center survey conducted Nov. 28–Dec. 5, 2012 among 2,511 adults nationwide, nearly half of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent that is 65 or older. In addition, they are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child over 18. And, about 15% of middle-aged adults provides financial support to their aging parent and child.

As a caregiver to a parent and adult child, we become bogged down in the day-to-day routines of their care and fail to realize that we are lacking the ability to create memories and moments with our loved ones. We yearn to find a way to create a more meaningful life for ourselves and our loved ones leading us to be sticky and salty about our situation.

Sweet and Smooth—The Jelly

On the other side of this sandwich generation are the adults who calmly and smoothly embrace and enjoy the sweetness of caring for their parent and child— The Jelly. It can be very challenging to enjoy the happy times with an aging parent or adult child when you are a caregiver. We sometimes fail to realize that time is the most valuable thing that we have with our parent or adult child. Instead of failing to realize the treasures we have in caregiving, we need to spread and balance the sweet and smooth jelly of time with the sticky and salty peanut butter in our lives.

Comforting and Protective—The Bread

Holding the delicious flavors of the sandwich generation together is the bread. As caregivers, adults offer emotional support to aging parents and grown children helping them navigate the trials and tribulations of life. The bread provides comfort and protection to keep the ingredients intact and unharmed.

Many people make assumptions about aging, what it is like to grow “old”, and how older age will affect them. But as we are getting older, it is important to understand the positive aspects of aging. Research has shown that you can help preserve your health and mobility as you age by adopting or continuing healthy habits and lifestyle choices. Read on to learn about 10 common misconceptions related to aging and older adults.

1. Depression and loneliness are normal in older adults.

As people age, some may find themselves feeling isolated and alone. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and sadness. However, these feelings are not a normal part of aging as growing older can have many emotional benefits, such as long-lasting relationships with friends and family and a lifetime of memories to share with loved ones. In fact, studies show that older adults are less likely to experience depression than young adults. So, when should you be concerned? It’s important to remember that older adults with depression may have less obvious symptoms or be less likely to discuss their feelings. Depression is a

common and potentially serious mood disorder, but there are treatments that are effective for most people.

3. Older adults can’t learn new things.

Not true! Older adults still have the ability to learn new things, create new memories, and improve their performance in a variety of skills. 4. It is inevitable that older people will get dementia

Dementia is not a normal part of aging. Although the risk of dementia grows as people get older, it is not inevitable, and many people live into their 90s and beyond without the significant declines in thinking and behavior that characterize dementia. Occasionally forgetting an appointment or losing your keys are typical signs of mild forgetfulness, which is very common in normal aging. Nevertheless, you should talk with a doctor if you have serious concerns about your memory and thinking, or notice changes in your behavior and personality. These

problems can have a range of different causes, some of which are treatable or reversible. Finding the cause is important for determining best next steps.

5. Older adults should take it easy and avoid exercise so they don’t get injured.

As you age, you may think exercise could do more harm than good, especially if you have a chronic condition. However, studies show that you have a lot more to gain by being active — and a lot to lose by sitting too much. Often, inactivity is more to blame than age when older people lose the ability to do things on their own. Almost anyone, at any age and with most health conditions, can participate in some type of physical activity. In fact, physical activity may help manage some chronic conditions. Exercise and physical activity are not only great for your mental and physical health, but can help keep you independent as you age. Tai Chi and similar mind and body movement practices have been shown to improve balance and stability in older adults and this can help maintain independence and prevent future falls.

6. If a family member has Alzheimer’s disease, I will have it, too.

A person’s chance of having Alzheimer’s disease may be higher if he or she has a family history of dementia because there are some genes that we know increase risk. However, having a parent with Alzheimer’s does not necessarily mean that someone will develop the disease. Learn about your family health history and talk with your doctor about your concerns.

Environmental and lifestyle factors, such as exercise, diet, exposure to pollutants, and smoking also may affect a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s. While you cannot control the genes you inherited, you can take steps to stay healthy as you age, such as getting regular exercise, controlling high blood pressure, and not smoking.

7. Now that I am older, I will have to give up driving.

As the U.S. population ages, the number of licensed older adults on the road will continue to increase. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recorded a record-high 221.7 million licensed drivers in the U.S. in 2016, including 41.7 million — or almost one in five — who are 65 years or older. The question of when it is time to limit or stop driving should not be about age, rather, it should be about one’s ability to drive safely. These questions may help you determine if you or a loved one needs to limit or stop driving. Talk with your doctor if you have any concerns about your health and driving.

8. Only women need to worry about osteoporosis.

Although osteoporosis is more common in women, this disease still affects many men and could be underdiagnosed. While men may not be as likely to have osteoporosis because they start with more bone density than women, one in five men over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. By age 65 or 70, men and women lose bone mass at the same rate.

Many of the things that put men at risk are the same as those for women, including family history, not enough calcium or vitamin D, and too little exercise. Low levels of testosterone, too much alcohol, taking certain drugs, and smoking are other risk factors.

9. I’m “too old” to quit smoking.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you have been smoking, quitting at any time improves your health. Smokers who quit have fewer illnesses such as colds and the flu, lower rates of bronchitis and pneumonia, and an overall better feeling of well-being.

The benefits of quitting are almost immediate. Within a few hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood begins to decline and, in a few weeks, your circulation improves, and your lung function increases. Smoking causes an immediate and long term rise in your heart rate and blood pressure, but quitting can lead to a lowering of heart rate and blood pressure over time. Quitting smoking will also lower your risk of cancer, heart attack, stroke, and lung disease. Quitting will also reduce secondhand smoke exposure to other family members or caregivers in the home. It is never too late to reap the benefits of quitting smoking and setting a healthy example for your children and grandchildren.

10. My blood pressure has lowered or returned to normal, so I can stop taking my medication.

High blood pressure is a very common problem for older adults — especially those in their 80s and 90s — and can lead to serious health problems if not treated properly. If you take high blood pressure medicine and your blood pressure goes down, it means the medicine and any lifestyle changes you have made are working. However, it is very important to continue your treatment and activities long-term. If you stop taking your medicine, your blood pressure could rise again, increasing your risk for health problems like stroke and kidney disease. Daily Multivitamin May Enhance Memory In Older Adults

A large clinical trial found that daily multivitamins led to modest improvements in memory over a three-year period in older adults.

The greatest increase was seen in those who had underlying cardiovascular disease.

Additional research is needed to include more diverse participants and pinpoint which nutrients might play a role in protecting memory.

Memory and thinking skills tend to decline as we get older. Certain lifestyle factors—such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and social interactions—might help to protect cognitive health as we age. Some studies have suggested that taking multivitamins or other dietary supplements may help protect thinking and memory. But few large-scale studies have directly examined how dietary supplements affect cognitive health in older adults. Clinical trials to date have shown mixed results.

A research team led by Dr. Adam M. Brickman of Columbia University set out to test the idea. Their study included more than 3,500 volunteers, ages 60 and older. Most were white (94%), and more than half had a college degree (56%). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily multivitamin or a placebo pill. Neither they nor the researchers knew which type of pills they were given.

When the study began, the participants took a series of web-based online tests to assess their cognitive abilities. The tests were then repeated annually for three years. Results appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on May 24, 2023.

At the end of the first year, people taking the daily multivitamin had significantly higher scores on a test of immediate recall compared to the pla-

cebo group. The test involved viewing a series of 20 words, one at a time, for three seconds each. Immediately afterward, people were asked to key in as many words as they could remember.

In the multivitamin group, scores improved from an average of about 7.1 recalled words to 7.8 words after the first year. For comparison, scores changed from about 7.2 words to about 7.6 words in the placebo group. The improved scores in the multivitamin group continued but did not significantly increase over that of the placebo group into the second and third years of the study. Other types of cognitive tests showed no significant differences between the groups.

Notably, participants with a history of cardiovascular disease had lower immediate-recall scores at the start of the study compared to those without such history. But after one year of taking multivitamins, the scores of those with cardiovascular disease improved significantly, becoming comparable to those without the disease.

These results refine the findings of a related NIH-supported study published last year. That study of more than 2,200 people ages 65 and older found that a daily multivitamin improved a broad measure of cognitive function. Improvements were likewise more prominent in those with a history of cardiovascular disease.

“There is evidence that people with cardiovascular disease may have lower micronutrient levels that multivitamins may correct, but we don’t really know right now why the effect is stronger in this group,” explains Brickman.

“Cognitive aging is a top health concern for older adults, and this study suggests that there may be a simple, inexpensive way to help older adults slow down memory decline,” he adds.

Further research is needed to study more diverse populations and pinpoint which nutrients might play a role in protecting memory.—by

Ways to Help Someone Who is Downsizing

Focus on what to keep. Many times when we are helping clients downsize and move, they get stuck in thinking about what to do with the things they are not keeping. Often this prevents any progress. Instead, thinking about which items are still loved and used can be a more joyful experience. Taking these items into the next chapter makes for a great new start.

Group like items together. It’s hard to take stock of what you have when it’s spread throughout the house. If you have clothes in multiple closets, or coffee mugs in different cupboards for example bring them all together and decide how many you really still like, want, or need.

Listen to the stories. Sometimes telling the story about a belonging is just what is needed to be able to let it go. It can also be a really fun way to connect with a friend or relative and learn things about them that you didn’t know.

Help preserve the memory. One fun way to do this is after you’ve heard a story of some meaningful items, take a picture and put the story on the back or turn it into a book of photos with the stories. This way your loved one can remember the memories and let go of the objects.

Accept items graciously. If a loved one offers you something, keep in mind this may be the step they need to be able to let it go. It does not mean a life sentence of having to keep the item. You can choose to keep it, donate it, or refurbish it as needed. Another option is to help explore meaningful places that are important to your loved one to donate items to.

cane sugar and canola oil or there were paleo products that were almond flour and egg whites or there were Vegan products made with wheat flour and sugar. We kept buying samples, but the taste and texture were not appealing. Even our dogs wouldn’t eat them. We knew we could develop a better alternative.”

Blooming Lotus Bakery was the result of A LOT of trial and error in the kitchen for proprietors Susan and Lars. It’s the only bakery of its kind in the world. The bakery has a dedicated kitchen which is free of grain, gluten, egg, dairy, cane sugar, oils, soy and yeast. Goulet grew up in a family with very severe food allergies and Schloemer grew up in a family of professional bakers. Although Schloemer has no food allergies, he’s been eating a healthy diet since the ‘70s and has been around baking all of his life. Schloemer’s great-grandparents owned two bakeries in Germany and his grandparents owned two bakeries in Cincinnati, Ohio. Schloemer said conventional baking was his forte, “Lots of sugar, lots of butter! So, I changed up completely when Susan and I got together and I adopted her style of baking,” he notes. “We have created delicious bakery products that make you feel much better than eating conventional bakery.”

Improve function and minimize impairment related to activities

What kind of person would use a health and rehab center?

Rehab centers provide services for a large variety of medical concerns. Common patients include those recovering from leg, back and neck injuries, joint replacement, and debilitating illnesses, such as pneumonia. Patients with neurological disorders or injuries, such as strokes, Parkinsons Disease or MS, often require a comprehensive therapy program to restore or improve function. Other common rehab needs are patients requiring treatment for complex wounds or respiratory disorders such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD).

What kind of services are typically offered?

Inpatient subacute rehabis a comprehensive program including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Nursing rehabilitation.

Physical Therapy focuses on strengthening and endurance for patients who have become deconditioned or are recovering from acute injuries, acute illnesses or elective orthopedic surgery. Occupational Therapy focuses on assisting the patient to perform the necessary activities of daily life to return home safely. This can include everything from dressing, bathing and meal preparation but can also include vital therapy such as home safety, adaptive equipment training, scooter and walker training and bladder training. Home visits are also performed with Occupational Therapy staff to assess home safety as well as assuring that there are no unforseen obstacles to ensure a successful return home. Speech therapy provides not only speech and voice training but addresses swallowing concerns, medication training and cognitive therapies to improve memory, safety and problem solving. Nursing rehab encompasses such needs as intravenous therapy, wound care, pain management and respiratory therapy. Additional therapies can also be provided, such as lymphedema programs, raiki, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and aroma therapy.

What is the typical cost?

Most private insurance companies and Medicare cover rehab therapies and services. A patient with Medicare and a secondary insurance are usually covered completely for up to 100 days, which is usually much longer than the average rehab stay. An average rehab stay is approximately 30-40 days. Medicare replacement policies will usually cover rehab services but may require a daily copay. The copay amount varies depending upon the individual policy. It is always best to contact your insurance company to determine if there is a copay and what the daily copay amount will be.

Is there a way to research different rehab facilities?

The best way to research a rehab facility is to request a facility tour. Seeing a facility firsthand is the most effective way to see if the facility will meet your particular needs. Take careful note of the facility appearance Is the facility neat and clean? Do the patients appear well groomed? Observe patient amenities such as private rooms, TV, phone, laundry services, and salon services. Ask questions regarding therapy services Is therapy offered 7 days a week or just on weekdays? Does the therapy department provide home visits to ensure a safe transition home? Inquire regarding other onsite professional services (Physiatrist for pain management, wound certified staff, and recreational activities) Observing a rehabilitation center in person is the best way to assure you are getting a quality, comprehensive rehab experience.

Fix it: Sack the sugar. Or at least limit the amount you spoon into your coffee cup.

For reference, people assigned male at birth should get no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day, while those assigned female at birth should stick to 6 teaspoons or less, according to the American Heart Association. (Added sugar shows up in many processed and packaged foods, so it’s easy to get too much, even if you’re not adding teaspoons to your mug.)

4. Quitting Cold Turkey

Trying to curb your caffeine habit? It might be best to wean your way off gradually.

When you’re a regular coffee drinker, you can experience withdrawal symptoms if you quit cold turkey. “Once dialysis removes caffeine from the system, a person can develop a caffeine withdrawal headache,” Dr. Riggins says.

Plus, a rapid reduction of caffeine can also result in difficulty concentrating, per the Cleveland Clinic.

Fix it: To avoid the pounding head pain and brain fog, cut down your caffeine intake little by little. Try alternating between regular and decaf coffee, then slowly switch to more decaf, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
