Editor’s Note
Everything anew again ANEW Skin and Wellness is all about rejuvenation.
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and have started off the new year with health and good cheers. Now that January is here, it is once again time to make those special New Year Resolutions. In the end of 2013, I started my new diet plan to add in more greens to my diet. Green is the color for 2014...avacados, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and even juicing spinach. Like everyone else, I have a new year’s resolution of becoming more healthy, having a new workout routine and reading more books on my spiritual self. Of course, many of us don’t stick with the plan but at least we try and I think that’s what counts. As we all know, we need to be realistic when it comes to personal change. I just don’t think we should make harsh demands on ourselves. Now and then, be tough on ourselves when we don’t fulfill that demand. Getting healthy can be as simple as eating an apple or two a day instead of reaching for a candy bar. Or maybe now is the time to cut back on all the caffeine. I love having a snowy cover in January...even though we might have a had a tad too much. I’m getting used to the weather. The snow as pretty as it is, just makes me lazy. I just want to curl up in front of the fire, have warm tea and read about all the things I should be doing. We hope that you continue reach for our paper every month so you can arm yourself with the best in health information. Continue on your health quest!

JAMES “My stay at ManorCare Health Services – Pewaukee was great. I came in for rehabilitation after a traumatic injury. The staff was well trained, organized and worked hard to attend to my needs – both physically and mentally. They understood my needs and provided the care necessary while maintaining my dignity. The facility was clean and the entire staff was accommodating 24-hours a day. The rehabilitation staff gave me the necessary ‘push’ to attain improvement of my injuries.

LOCAL EYE CARE SPECIALISTS EXPLAIN RISKS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR GLAUCOMA By Cheryl L. Dejewski What is glaucoma? “Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S., affecting more than four million Americans of all ages and races. . . and, at least half don’t even know they have it. Glaucoma is a condition in which fluid pressure in the eye is too high for the health of the optic nerve and thus damages how visual information is carried from the retina to the brain. Left untreated, it first causes loss of side vision and later possibly all sight—permanently. The most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years—until severe permanent damage has occurred,” explains Mark Freedman, MD, a partner at Eye Care Specialists, one of the state’s leading ophthalmology practices. Do you have glaucoma? How eye care specialists check for the disease Daniel Ferguson, MD, an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon who performs advanced drainage implant procedures to alleviate glaucoma-related eye pressure, advises, “Since glaucoma and other sight-threatening conditions often don’t exhibit early symptoms, regular eye exams are vitally important for anyone past age 40.” Ferguson notes that a thorough examination for glaucoma should include the following: Ophthalmoscopy: An instrument called an “ophthalmoscope” is used to look into and light up the back of the eye to check the health of the retina and look for signs of glaucoma (like abnormal optic nerve size and loss of pink coloring). For the best view inside, the pupils are dilated. Tonometry (Pressure) Testing: Measures inner eye pressure by determining how
much pressure is necessary to cause a slight indentation on the outer part of the eye. This is done either by directing a warm puff of air at the eye or painlessly touching it with what is called a “tonometer.” Normal pressure readings range from 12-21, but can vary by hour and day. Visual Field Testing: During this test, the patient stares into a machine and presses a button when they see flashes of light. A computer then plots a computerized “map” of the range of sight based on what areas have been lost. Loss of side vision is a common sign of glaucoma. Gonioscopy: A special hand-held contact lens with a mirror inside is used to examine the angle where the iris meets the cornea. This helps determine the type of glaucoma and treatment plan. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Testing: Eye Care Specialists joins Harvard Medical School and other prestigious institutions in offering this advancement. Patients focus on a dot while a safe, invisible laser light scans the inside of the eye. The OCT then creates detailed printouts (similar to CT scans) that visualize and measure any changes to the optic nerve and retina (an area smaller than the head of a pin)—often before damage occurs. If glaucoma is detected, we can treat it with drops, laser therapy or surgery. Follow-up scans are used to watch for changes and prevent future vision loss. Staff and patients love that the OCT is fast and painless and results aren’t influenced by attention span, comfort, or ability to follow directions. Know the risks for getting and having glaucoma Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and partner at Eye Care Specialists private practice, Dr. Brett Rhode highlights the following glaucoma-related risks: *Glaucoma is most common in adults over age 40, and the risk increases with each decade. Regular screenings should start at this time. *If you have a sibling or parent with glaucoma, your risk of developing the disease increases 5 to 10 times. As such, children and siblings of glaucoma patients should have their eyes checked every 1-2 years. (Even if initial results are normal, glaucoma can often develop over time.) *Ethnicity affects your risk rate. If you are black, you have a 6-8 times higher risk of going blind from glaucoma than a white person. Hispanics and Asians also have a higher risk rate than Caucasians. *Other risk factors include nearsightedness, diabetes (doubles the risk of glaucoma), steroid use, and having a previous eye injury. *According to one study, glaucoma patients 50 and older were three times as likely to have experienced a fall in the previous year and six times as likely to have GLAUCOMA>>page 21

Osteoporosis is one of the most challenging of senior conditions, many times leading to bone fractures and breaks. Older adults should consult with their doctor to check for warning signs and risk factors. You can have your bones tested and begin to take measures to strengthen them. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from sneezing or bumping into furniture. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone actually breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine and wrist. A 2012 surgeon general’s report found that each year, 1.5 million people suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture. The good news is, both nutrition and exercise have been found to help prevent osteoporosis. Check out the following from the International Osteoporosis Foundation: • Calcium supplementation has been shown to have a positive effect on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. • Calcium and vitamin D supplementation reduces rates of bone loss and also fracture rates in older male and female adults, and in seniors. In institutionalized older women, this combined supplementation reduced hip fracture rates. • Fruit and veggie intake was positively associated with bone density in a study in men and women. The exact components of fruits and vegetables which may confer a benefit to bone are still to be clarified. • Higher levels of leisure time, sport activity, and household chores and fewer hours of sitting daily were associated with a significantly reduced relative risk for hip fracture. • Physical activity and fitness reduce risk of osteoporosis and fracture and fallrelated injuries. Not only does exercise strengthen your bones, but it also an important way to prevent falls that can weaken or break bones. Consider an exercise program that improves balance and coordination, such as tai chi or even dancing! Finally, as a caregiver your own health is so easy to let slide when you are caring for someone else. Keep in mind that for both men and women, bone loss starts in the mid- to late-30s. Take steps now to prevent osteoporosis. Don’t skip your physician’s appointments, eat as healthily as you can and figure out ways to build exercise into your day. New Hope FOR ARTHRITIS SUFFERERS MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient’s body. Aches and pains have long plagued people of all ages and walks of life. But exciting new technological advances are helping doctors of chiropractic get to the root causes of pain more rapidly than ever before. Statewide professionals, are using lasers to treat arthritis pain and dysfunction more efficiently by reducing the swelling and improving circulation to the affected tissues. Dr. Evans, owner of Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic in New Berlin, began using the noninvasive therapy system known as the MLS Class 4 Laser at her clinic in January of 2011. The response from patients has been phenomenal. “I have patients travelling from as far away as Sheboygan “This is definitely the wave of the future,” said Dr. Evans, who has been a practicing chiropractor for 22 years. “With the financial constraints of the current economy and rising health insurance costs, people need to get better faster.” While traditional chiropractic treatments typically would take three to four months to achieve a positive outcome, now with adding laser treatments the healing process is accelerated and patients are recovering in half the time. MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient’s body. One wave form relieves pain while the other accelerates the healing process. “This new technology gets patient’s better faster, this past year has been very exciting as I have been able to witness patient’s recover in ways I hadn’t seen before implementing this type of Laser therapy,” Evans said. The biggest problem any clinician faces when treating patients who are in pain is how to safely and effectively address inflammation. “All too often, physicians want to block the inflammatory process with medications both prescribed and over the counter, but you need to work with it instead,” she said. “This is where laser treatments make all the difference. The laser accelerates the inflammatory process (ie healing process) and this is why the patient recovers more quickly.” As advances have been made with technology, Class 4 lasers have enabled chiropractic professionals to venture into previously unheard of territory. Treatments were almost always ineffective for people where scar tissue had formed. Modern laser treatments have given professionals an opportunity to work through scar tissue – a scenario that has proven especially beneficial for the elderly and people who have had surgery. “One of the laser wave forms actually can break up old scar tissue when paired with the correct machine parameters thus allowing for greater joint motion and flexibility,” Evans said. “I like to think of it as WD-40 for the joints.” Walking has long been recommended as a key exercise in addressing weight gain—particularly for the aging population. But when a person has joint problems and pain, when walking could be a beneficial exercise is not an option. “Our bodies are meant to move but when movement causes pain it is almost impossible to remain healthy and vital thru the aging process,” Evans said. At Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic, patients typically undergo between 8 and 10 Laser treatments before inflammation has been adequately addressed and healing truly takes hold. A typical laser treatment lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, is painless, completely safe and has no adverse side effects.

THREE HOT TRENDS IN THE MASSAGE THERAPY INDUSTRY By Lisa Stapelmann, CA The beginning of a new year often leaves us craving change and transformation, doesn’t it? It’s a popular time for refocusing in ourselves, and especially our health. But what if this focus became a genuine reinvestment, dedicated to improving not only the health of ourselves but also of others? For many, the desire to help others achieve this state of health draws them to the field of massage therapy. Learning to use the power of therapeutic touch also makes massage therapy a rewarding career choice. It allows therapists to create meaningful change every day, which might help to explain the rapid, continuing growth of this industry. As the fastest growing field in alternative healthcare, there are several major trends worth noting. What exactly are experts saying about these recent changes in the profession? 01 Increasing research and acceptance as a respected healthcare modality Therapeutic massage has gained respect for its ability to address pain and boost well-being without the use of drugs, making it a vital component of the integrative care model. As a matter of fact, 75% of massage therapists now report that they receive referrals from many different types of healthcare providers. Dr. Andrew Weil, a medical doctor and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine states, “I am a strong advocate of massage therapy and feel that it fits extremely well into the paradigm of integrative medicine. Much of my firm support for massage therapy stems from the existence of a compelling research base. It’s also one of the CAM therapies most readily accepted by conventional medical doctors and hospital administrators. I consider massage therapy to be a core component of the CAM
therapies offered within integrative medicine.” The use of massage for pain management is especially popular lately, especially as research continues to support its effectiveness for common ailments such as back and neck issues. As Dr. Leena Guptha, current chair of the NCBTMB, states, “Massage is no longer just a stress-relief modality. People are seeking it as a preventative medicine for their health and for wellness.” 02 Unprecedented industry growth Employment for massage therapists is projected to increase by a staggering 20% from 2010 to 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2012. This, of course, is faster than average for all occupations. And just a year earlier, “Massage Therapist” was named one of the top 10 careers of 2011 by Bloomberg Business Week. According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA): “The number of Americans receiving massages has more than doubled in the last decade (now over 114 million treatments per year), and more organizational managers are including massage as an employee benefit to help increase retention and to bolster employee morale.” While employment figures are on the rise and the public’s use of therapeutic massage is steadily increasing, it’s easy to see what makes it such an attractive field for those seeking a new or first career. 03 Training programs that can be completed in under a year With the ability to obtain a diploma and state licensure in under a year, massage therapy is a relatively accessible field to enter quickly. Stronger school curriculums often emphasize hands-on teaching methods to allow students to immediately grasp important concepts during class time. Furthermore, some programs teach multiple modalities of massage and bodywork techniques, along with both full-time and part-time enrollment options for those with busy schedules. Says Julia Tallard, a current massage therapy student, “When you know what you want from your future, you want that to start right away! Wondering just what to look for in a massage school? Please stay tuned for the following article, “The Four Things You Need from Your Massage School,” in an upcoming issue of Nature’s Pathways. Lisa Stapelmann, MSOM, CA, is the Campus Director of East-West Healing Arts Institute – Milwaukee. She is fully dedicated to empowering students to achieve their highest potential before and beyond graduation. For more information on the field of massage therapy or questions about the East-West educational experience, she may be reached directly at (414)312-7929 or at lisa@acupressureschool.com.

Did you know the only wrong meditation is the one you do not show up for? Many have the misconception that only their technique will bring you to true meditation. I would suggest there are many paths leading to the river that flows into meditation. Beginning or learning meditation can best be approached with an open heart and an open mind. Even if you have previous experience, each lesson has the potential to bring something new if you are open to it. Many methods are available; choose the one that resonates within you. As a friend once said to me,sift and sort what holds truth for you and let go of the rest. Choose the one that speaks to your soul. There are no gold metals for a particular posture. Find a place of comfort where there is no noise and you will not be disturbed for a period of time. There is a very good book written by Will Johnson “The Posture of Meditation if you are interested in finding more on this subject. Many of us come to the cushion, mat or chair with our self-judgment and ego fully in charge of the practice. We cannot get comfortable trying to sit in a position that does not conform to our body’s condition. Our clothing binds us and our minds rant and rave about how we are doing this wrong. We are mistaken when we think we must sit for an extended period of time and that thoughts must never cross our minds. In reality, one might only sit for seconds in the beginning. It is very important to know that even a moment of stillness is all that is necessary to create a positive experience. Returning again and again to a positive experience will establish a sadhana, or meditation practice. However, it will take dedication to become a practitioner. Begin by establishing a ritual or routine for holding your practice. Following the same pattern helps the mind to settle and allows it to quiet down. To begin, sit comfortably and check your posture to make sure your diaphragm has room to expand and your clothes are not binding. Then close your eyes and gently bring your focus to the space between the eyebrows. This is not a crossing of the eyes but a gentle upward gaze. One may practice three slow deep inhales and three slow deep exhales to calm the body and mind - allowing the belly (below the navel) to extend out on the inhale and lift up and in on the exhale. Relax and try this now...... just allow your attention to follow a nice long inhale and then a nice long exhale; repeat this several times. Remember, attention follows intention. So set your intention which may be as simple as “May I breathe in peace.
Mi
Renew your body, mind, and spirit.
n
Body
d
This simple practice can lower your heart rate, calm the nervous system, improve the endocrine system sending endorphins out into the blood stream, increase blood flow, oxygenate the brain, and create new brain cells…. to mention just a few of the benefits of meditation. This practice may only take a few seconds and at the end you may notice a shift or change. Please take a moment before rising to set an intention to take this peace with you out into your life. There are many well-trained teachers and techniques available. It may be in the busy high traffic studios or off in the mountains or it may be a small quiet place near by. Look around to find what fits you. Many practitioners I have spoken with agree that when you are ready and available your path will lead you to what you need. Once you have found a technique that resounds within you, establish your practice. Use the same technique for some time, a few months at least, to allow the body and mind to settle. After a time, you may wish to add or change a technique to expand your experience. I would like to take a moment to discuss what is meant by techniques and meditation. There is a large range of techniques out there, know there is one that will speak to you. Techniques are effortful tools used to bring one to the doorway of meditation. You must each walk through that doorway alone into meditation. Meditation is a one pointed effortless focus. I would be remiss if I did not add a note here about what happens when you get quiet. When stillness comes, emotions you thought were long gone will rise again. This is normal and as my meditation teacher Sri Goswami Kriyananda advised, “The ghosts of the past want to live again”. Acupuncture Acupuncture is the proven, 3,000 year old medicine from China. Acupuncture and TCM have been in the United States for the last 30 years. In this article I will refer to Oriental Medicine as TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and this article will mostly deal with acupuncture. Acupuncture uses very fine needles, thinner than a human hair and they are not painful. The needles are used to activate various body energy channels called meridians. These meridians are the pathways to a healthy body and mind. If the pathways are disrupted, then there are problems with the body and/or mind. Acupuncture works by activating the body’s regulation system. If the meridians are out of balance then you can have pain, sickness or lack of stamina. Using acupuncture to rebalance the body helps to eliminate the pain, relieve the sickness and give you more energy. This is accomplished by using specific points of the body that will help to rebalance the body. This rebalancing sometimes occurs immediately, and at other times may take many months. Senior citizens have collected a lifetime of experience with medical problems. The dynamic nature of life is never still and the body collects the life experiences and seems to give them back to you when you age. Pills do not seem to be the answer and not all surgeries are needed and /or successful. Into this picture we introduce acupuncture. In TCM it is the symptoms that are treated, not a named illness or a particular problem. The acupuncturist treats the symptoms. If they can relieve the symptoms, healing occurs. This is the backbone of the success of acupuncture. It treats symptoms very effectively.

FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
Pain is a big problem with seniors. Some seniors have suffered years of pain without relief. Many seniors are so used to their pain that they don’t think there is anything that can be done to help them. When we treat seniors for pain, the most often heard comment is “why did I not try this years ago?” In many cases once relief is achieved the pain never returns. All of this is accomplished without the use of dangerous pain medications that have many warnings of bad side effects. As we age, we get a little stiffer. Our lack of exercise and good stretching habits during our lifetime tend to slow us down in old age. Acupuncture, by virtue of its ability to increase the circulation in the meridians, helps to restore mobility in many seniors. There are many instances of seniors no longer needing to only rely on walkers or canes in order to get around. This is a great improvement for many people and they can function much better. Another advantage of acupuncture is its ability to nourish the body, and by doing that, help heal patients. These nourishing treatments increase circulation in the meridians and supply energy and healing power to areas of the body that may not have been getting enough nourishment. Once the body is better nourished, you feel better and can accomplish more. One of the major nourishment principles is to increase the Qi, which is the TCM theory of energy. This Qi strengthens the blood and nourishes our head. Thus, it helps hearing, eyesight, balance and memory. All of these are concerns of seniors and acupuncture can help. Anxiety and depression are serious problems with seniors. There is a great deal of help offered by acupuncture for these conditions. As the body is balanced and nourished, emotional problems are smoothed out. Sleep is better and more restful and the day’s concerns and worries are not as prominent. Treatments with acupuncture are a helpful addition to emotional stability. Dr. William F. Hughes, Jr. PhD, Dipl. Ac ,Hughs Acupuncture Clinic 11711 W. North Avenue, Wauwatosa, WI 53226, 414-607-0900
Redefining Health
MIDLIFE AS ALCHEMY By Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D. What is Midlife? What is Menopause? What is at stake? What is our Conditioned-Self? What is our Authentic-Self? How do they differ? In my 22 year history as a physician who has worked with thousands of brave and courageous men and women with stories of wounding, suffering and healing, I can say that I have been able to identify the differences between these selves and the intrinsic power that emerges when one leaves the Conditioned for the Authentic Self. The Conditionedself is who you were told you SHOULD BE. The Authentic-Self is WHO YOU ARE. For the first half of our life, the Authentic-Self is buried beneath the Conditioned. In the second half, we must re-emerge Authentic. There is a powerful shift that occurs in midlife when our physiology and soul intersect at this gateway to make room for the REAL to emerge. This creates a felt space between the Conditioned and Authentic selves. The traction of the conditioned one pulls at us, urging us to behave from familiarity based in FEAR. All the ‘shoulds’ fear us into staying stuck. Fear is the feeling that adapts us in the first half of our life. We adapt to be accepted. Adaptation conditions us. It creates a shell around our Authentic –self that waits patiently for us to awaken. We learn to withhold our truth; we say ‘yes’ when we want to say ‘NO’. We over-ride our true feelings to be accepted and loved. For decades we live this way. We construct our lives from choices that emerge through our conditioning. We become part of societys’ ‘herd’. We normalize this identity and close our eyes. When we turn 40, something changes. A soft whisper fleets through our body and mind, suddenly with no warning. Sometimes we don’t really hear it, sometimes we try not to. It beckons us to awaken, to bring LIGHT to our choices. It says, ‘Who are you really?’ This frightens us. If we don’t listen, it moves in deeper, rises stronger – as fire, as density -anxiety, depression –in our bellies, pulling us in. We begin to sweat, to hot-flash; we awaken at 3 am with minds racing and fear coursing in this unknown place. In the middle of the dark rises a whisper of comfort, the voice of our Soul pulling us in – to connect, to open, to awaken and deliver us finally to our Voice and our Truth. If we do not listen, it may call to us as cancer, divorce, tragedy, devastation, that forces us inward to evaluate, deconstruct and make us new. All this sorting and sifting, transforming and reinventing – THIS is midlife. This is menopause. This is not a sickness or a deficiency. This is NOT a pathology. This can NOT be medicated away. This is HERE to stay and it will offer us the fire of alchemy into which we must step to make ourselves WHOLE. The voice of the Authentic-Self will rise from ashes of the conditioned one as adaptations fall into the fire to be transformed. If we willingly lean into this, our voice will emerge – FINALLY- the TRUE voice we will use to heal the world. We will spread our wings and fly out from this fire into life again with wisdom and an inner eye that can never be closed. ©January, 2014 Kalpana (Rose) M. Are You Healthy? This should be a simple question, but really it’s a deceptively complex issue that begins with trying to define health. Everybody talks about health, but what is health? A Google search for “definition of health” returns 451 million citations. The “Oxford Dictionaries” say health is the state of being free from illness or injury, but this is too limiting. The World Health Organization takes a broader view; Health is not merely the absence of disease...” It is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being” For the purpose of this article let us use the WHO’s more comprehensive definition of health. Now that we have defined health, how do you translate this into your daily life.
The first thing to ask is; “How am I doing now?” Do I feel good? Can I physically and mentally do the things I want to do? Am I competently managing the daily stress in my life? The answer to these questions gives you a snapshot of your current physical, mental and social well-being, but this picture does not always do a good job of telling you when your systems reserves are being depleted and what problems are coming in the future. A single frame from a movie may tell you what’s happening right now but may not tell you what’s going to happen in the next scene. If you’re feeling good now, there may be very little indication that
16 MHL JANUARY 2014
you are developing chronic problems that will manifest themselves in the future. To be healthy you have to be concerned not only with present issues but with factors that will affect future well-being. Can you prevent the development of chronic diseases? If you already have a chronic disease can you slow the progression or possibly reverse its course? The answers to these questions are: Yes I can! In order to do this, though, you need a more comprehensive preventative approach than what the medical system commonly provides. Currently, you get blood pressure meds to lower your high blood pressure, insulin or metformin to lower your high blood sugar, and cardiac catheterizations and stents to bypass your plaque. All of these interventions are extremely important, in fact can be lifesaving, when needed. Most of our chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases and cancers develop over years to decades. The more important question for each of you is: “Before I show overt signs and symptoms that need to be treated, is there a way to determine, that I have begun to develop a chronic disease and change the course while I’m still feeling good? Genetics and environment both play important roles. Your genetics are a baseline, but your environment plays a significant role in how your genes are actually expressed. If your environment leads to excess oxidative stress and you are nutritionally deficient in the factors that are needed to adequately breakdown toxins, how your DNA is actually expressed will change. Important environmental factors include sleep patterns, nutritional status, exercise patterns, stress, support systems, and exposures to environmental toxins. A person whose diet is overwhelmed by Omega 6 fats, excess carbohydrates, excess neuro-excitatory stimulants, i.e. aspartame from diet soda will be at a much higher risk of developing hypertension, heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic immune disorders. A person raised in an environment exposed to heavy metals high levels of PCBs or other plastic will be in a much higher risk for developing heart disease and cancer. Do you Exercise 5 times/week for 30 mins? This is important because doing so has been shown to decrease all-cause mortality by up to 30%. Specifically it reduces the risk of stroke by 25%, reduces the risk of heart attack and cardiac death by 40%., reduces high blood pressure by 10 to 15 mm Hg, reduces stress, reduces the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancer, and facilitates detoxification.1 Do you sleep 7 or more hours per night? This is important because not doing so is associated with neurological diseases: stroke, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s HEALTHY>>page 23

MCFI’s Michelle Black says ‘make every bite count’ Healthy eating is essential to health, but the stakes are higher when you’re eating for two. “The thing pregnant women need to know is to make every bite count,” said Michelle Black, a registered dietitian. “Nutrient density is very important.” That means you should get as many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants per calorie consumed as possible. “It’s really eating lots of fruits and veggies, lean meats and beans and different types of protein,” she said. “Pregnant women need more protein.” It also means consuming three servings of calcium daily. “If you don’t like milk, make sure you’re drinking calcium-enriched orange juice or soy milk that’s calcium fortified.” She also suggests eating six smaller meals a day. “It keeps your nutrient levels up throughout the day and can ease morning sickness.” Make sure your carbohydrates are whole grains, like oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat bread. “Don’t just look for the brown bread – make sure it says 100 percent whole wheat flour on the label.” But food alone during pregnancy may not be enough. Black recommends that you talk with your health care provider about adding vitamin supplements like folic acid, iron and calcium to your nutrition plan.
Eating healthy also means avoiding certain foods while pregnant. They include:
• Unpasteurized soft cheeses, like feta, gorgonzola, Brie and Camembert. • Meat that is not well cooked. Ask for meats to be well-done when ordering at restaurants. • Any type of big fish – shark, swordfish, king mackerel – as they can contain mercury which could harm the fetus. • Any food item made with raw eggs, such as homemade mayonnaise or Hollandaise sauce. • Alcohol. “No amount of alcohol is safe in pregnancy,” said Black. Sweets, meanwhile, are OK in moderation, she said. “But a better choice would be fruit if you’re needing something sweet,” she said. Consider a yogurt parfait or low-fat frozen yogurt with fruit instead of a donut or chocolate bar. Michelle Black is MCFI’s Health and Wellness Coordinator. Why do I hear people but not understand them? One of the most common questions and biggest complaints I get in my office is why people can hear others talk to them but not understand the words they are saying. The answer to the overwhelming majority of these questions is high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. As we grow older, humans tend to lose a bit of our hearing. This loss of hearing due to age is called presbycusis . In the English language, vowels are low frequency sounds that bring power to our speech, but contribute less to understanding. Consonants are more mid and high frequency sounds that bring understanding to our language. It is very common to lose high frequency hearing sensitivity at a greater amount than we lose our low frequency hearing sensitivity. When someone has a high frequency hearing loss, they can hear low frequency sounds (vowels) louder than other sounds. This allows them to be alerted that someone is speaking to them, but since the high frequency sounds are missing or present at significantly lower levels, they cannot understand what is being said. An excellent example of this situation is the TV game show “Wheel of Fortune”. When all those blank spaces for letters appear on the screen, why do you think the vowels are so cheap? The vowels are cheap because they convey little meaning to the word. It’s only after you start placing some consonants into the spaces that you can figure out what the word is. People with untreated high frequency hearing loss are literally playing “Wheel of Fortune” all day long. The most effective treatment is hearing aid amplification that is used consistently all day long. The human brain is very powerful but is limited by the sounds that the ears let in. If you have a high frequency hearing loss, your brain is not getting that information and cannot make use of it to understand speech. Hearing aids can bring back those high frequency sounds and our brain will actually re-wire itself to begin using the high frequency sounds again. This “re-wiring” process can take several months to complete. The result is better speech understanding. If you find yourself asking others for repetition often, or you are turning up the TV/radio louder and louder, it is time for an audiological evaluation. If you or someone else you know is avoiding social situations because of poor hearing, please have them be evaluated by an audiologist. Hearing aids have come a long way over the years and most are now extremely sophisticated digital devices that perform quite well. Hearing aids make split second decisions on sound processing to deliver the speech signal the most appropriate way to the user. Every hearing loss is different and the hearing aids need to be programmed by a competent professional. It is strongly suggested that you see an audiologist when purchasing hearing aids. This article was written by Dr. Douglas Kloss, Audiologist at Midwest Audiology Center, LLC. 4818 S. 76th St., Suite 3, Greenfield, WI 53220. 414-281-8300
GLAUCOMA<<page 7 involved in a car accident in the previous five years as were members of control groups. They were also more likely to be at fault when a collision did occur. Why the increased risk of injury? Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve, which may lead to potentially dangerous narrowing of the visual field or “tunnel vision.” *Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital to protecting and preserving vision. Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7035 for a free educational booklet on the disease and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening that includes ophthalmoscopy, tonometry (pressure), visual field, gonioscopy, and OCT laser scan testing. This screening is typically covered by Medicare and most insurances. You’ll be helping your family to see life to the fullest . . . now and in the future. Learn the Treatment Options Harvard graduate and corneal specialist Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, and ophthalmologist and continuing education lecturer Michael Raciti, MD, answer the following questions: How is glaucoma treated? Dr. Paskowitz: Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage. The most common type of glaucoma is a lifelong condition that requires continual management. To prevent vision loss, we prescribe drops that lower pressure by either decreasing fluid production in or increasing fluid drainage out of the eye. Is there an alternative to drops? Dr. Raciti: In some cases, when drops alone cannot control the pressure, or side effects are intolerable, or multiple types of drops are required, laser treatment may be an alternative. Procedures include LTP and SLT (which increase fluid drainage) and ECP (which decreases fluid production). All take less than 10 minutes at our surgery center and are covered by Medicare and most insurances. FREE Booklets & Information Eye Care Specialists’ doctors are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration. This is important because, with each 1-serving increase intake of fruits or vegetables research has shown an additional 4% lower risk for coronary heart disease. 3 Is you resting heart rate <=65? This is important because for every 10 bpm that your resting heart rate is more than 65 your risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death increases by 10 -20%.4 Is you fasting blood sugar less than 84? This is important because for every 1 point that you fasting morning blood sugar is above 84 your risk of developing diabetes within 10 years, increases by 6%.5 Not only is it important to feel good now, but it is extremely important to evaluate and monitor the internal signs that are early indicators of chronic disease. This can be accomplished with a thorough functional medicine evaluation. The functional medicine, approach begins with a complete medical history that identifies when and how problems began and possible predisposing factors, both genetic and environmental. It continues with identifying current issues, environmental, nutritional, and potential toxins that either activate or perpetuate the problem. These are all evaluated in conjunction with important lifestyle issues, including nutritional status, quality and amount of exercise, sleep habits, life stresses, and support systems. This is followed by targeted laboratory testing to evaluate, hormones, energy production, the state of the immune system, the level of oxidative stress, neurotransmitters, digestion, nutrient deficiencies, and the ability to metabolize or detox normal byproducts or toxins. All of this forms the basis for individually tailored treatment plans that integrate medicines, nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, lifestyle modifications, botanicals, and other alternative treatments with the goal prevent or slow the development of chronic diseases and to maintain health, the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. EXERCISE, RX FOR ARTHRITIS By Arlene Becker Wisconsin, unfortunately, has a climate that is not sympathetic to arthritis sufferers, whatever their age. The summers can be humid, whether cooler or hotter. The winters, we all know, are generally damp and cold. In between there’s lots of rainy weather. There are, of course, beautiful dry days, but there are also too many of the ones that people who have arthritis can say, “My whatever (part of the body) tells me it’s going to rain or be damp.” Is there anything that an arthritis sufferer can do other than leaving the state and going to live in a dry place like Arizona or New Mexico? There’s scientific backing to the feeling that it’s going to rain when some part of your body starts to ache. According to a study done by Tufts University in 2007, “every ten degree drop in temperature corresponded with an incremental increase in arthritis pain.” Increasing barometric pressure was also a pain trigger in this study. According to Melissa Abramovich there is something to be done for those who suffer during the damp or cold seasons. Abramovich, who teaches a class to help people with arthritis, has an extensive background in health exercise training. Among her certifications are those issued by National Academy of Sports Medicine and The American Academy of Health and Fitness Rehabilitation Professionals. She is also rated as a Medical Exercise Specialist and agility related professional. With this EXERCISE>>page 26
24 MHL JANUARY 2014
EXERCISE<<page 24 background she created a course to specifically address arthritis at Elite Sports ClubRiver Glen in Glendale, called Healing Waters. Abramovich feels that exercise can address any type of arthritis, and spoke of the main types of arthritis. She explained, “there are two types of arthritis; Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. The first and most common type, Osteoarthritis is characterized by a degeneration of cartilage between the joints, causing pain as natural cushioning wears away. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disorder in which the body destroys its own connective tissues, causing pain. In both cases, daily exercise should be part of the prescription for dealing with pain and increasing functionality. Exercise warms the body by circulating fresh blood to the extremities, lubricating the joints with fluid, increasing comfort and functionality.” Abramovich also suggested warming therapies like hand warmers and warm baths with epson salts. She also suggested warm paraffin on hands, and keeping them in heated mitts; acupuncture and passive stretching, but,” she said, “always in conjunction with exercise.” “The Healing Waters class is held in Elite’s warm therapy pool and the movements are slow and soothing. Senior Yoga is also another class that is slow and gently restorative for arthritis participants.” Abramovich feels strongly that “we work the entire body as a system, rather than just one part. We look at the body in a holistic way. The body is a whole and each part impacts the body in its entirety. Thus movement increases blood flow warming the joints and assisting facilitating movement and pain relief. The benefit is to all parts, not just one so an arthritis sufferer would feel better overall, whatever part or parts are arthritic.” Explaining it in a technical way she said, “In both types of arthritis exercise reduces the inflammatory chemicals causing the pain, thus the exerciser receives pain reduction, increased fluidity of movement, increased ability in activities of daily living, a sense of increased strength and well being and better circulation all funnel into the exercise/arthritis connection.” “Everyone needs to move every day whether you have arthritis or not, but especially if you do,” she cautioned, “if you don’t move, your body will get more painful, and you will lose freedom of movement. The effects of exercising will last nicely throughout the day.” “Get up and move more! This can be walking, or participating in an appropriate strength class, but the idea is to do something every day. Sometimes time constraints make it difficult for someone to attend a particular class that would benefit an arthritic condition, or the person might want more personal attention in a one on one situation.” Abramovich suggested that “a personal trainer would be a great option, specifically one who has a specialty in Medical Exercise.” “It’s best for clients to typically work with a trainer one to three times a week, and in the case of arthritis, more often is better than less. Depending on the severity, a half hour session may be a good place to start, but can be booked from there in fifteen minute increments,” Abramovich said the client’s work doesn’t stop sessions with class. “I write up homework for my clients’ exercises, and give them assignments, that I expect them to do on their own, depending on how often our joint sessions are.” “I also build a typical week for my clients,” she continued, “to let them know what day they should be doing what assignments and that might well include a group exercise class or two, or some assignments in the therapy pool or fitness center. Creating a well balanced exercise plan is important for arthritis sufferers.” For more information on relieving your arthritic pain and for information on Elite Sports Clubs’ classes and programs for people with arthritis, call 414-3524900 or visit the website at www.eliteclubs.com

Can We Prevent Aging?
People are living longer. In 1970, the average life expectancy at birth in the United States was 70.8 years; in 2008, it was 78.0 years; and by 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau projects life expectancy will reach 79.5 years. Views on aging are also changing. Disease and disability were once considered an inevitable part of growing older, but that is no longer true. While aging does put us at greater risk for health issues, many older adults can be healthy and active well into their advancing years. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the Federal Government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), investigates ways to support healthy aging and prevent or delay the onset of age-related disease and decline. We have already gained important insights, and what we learn from ongoing and future studies may not only help to increase longevity, but may also promote what is known as “active life expectancy”—the time in late life free of disability. We already know, for example, that healthy eating and exercise and physical activity help promote healthy aging. Are there other interventions that can help? NIA-supported and other studies are taking a look at the possible benefits and risks of a number of approaches, including antioxidants, calorie restriction, and hormone supplements. This tip sheet provides an overview of what we know about these interventions and the research needed to learn more. Until we have a better understanding, it is a good idea to be skeptical of claims that any supplements can solve your age-related problems. Antioxidants Antioxidants protect the body from the harmful effects of by-products known as free radicals, made normally when the body changes oxygen and food into energy. The discovery of antioxidants raised hopes that people could slow aging simply by adding them to the diet. So far, studies of antioxidant-laden foods and supplements in humans have yielded little support for this conclusion. Further research, including large-scale epidemiological studies, might clarify whether dietary antioxidants can help people live longer, healthier lives. For now, although the effectiveness of dietary antioxidant supplementation remains controversial, there is positive evidence for the health benefits of fruits and vegetables. Calorie Restriction, Intermittent Fasting, Resveratrol, and Rapamycin Scientists are discovering that what you eat, how frequently, and how much may have an effect on quality and years of life. Some studies focus on identifying chemicals that somehow mimic calorie restriction’s benefits. Resveratrol, a compound found naturally in foods like grapes and nuts, is of interest. Since rapamycin treatment in people is associated with serious toxicities, its potential for human longterm use is uncertain.

Gauge Your Wellness Age True age depends on your attitude, sense of purpose, activity level, eating and sleeping habits and much more. There are many ways to determine your age. For most, it is simply looking at the calendar and marking it chronologically. However, not everyone ages in the same way. Age depends on more than just how many birthdays you mark. True age depends on your attitude, sense of purpose, activity level, eating and sleeping habits and much more. Medical science is now using lifestyle habits and other biomarkers to measure one’s age. To help you determine your “wellness age”, here are 10 markers: • Be physically active: People who exercise moderately for 20-30 minutes daily improve their wellness age by 3-6 years. • Be smoke and tobacco free: Smoking and using other tobacco products can reduce your wellness age 3-6 years. Nicotine damages the epithelial lining of your arteries and carbon monoxide in smoke suffocates the cells and cause premature cellular death. • Improve bone density: Increasing the strength of your bones adds 2-3 years to your wellness. Participating in walking, running, lifting, and other weight bearing activities helps bones absorb more calcium and other vital bone-building nutrients thereby strengthening your bones. • Reduce body fat levels and staying lean: As people age chronologically, body fat levels increase as much as 5% per decade. Accumulating extra fat especially around the mid-section disrupts the hormonal balance and ages the cells more rapidly. Carrying 5-10 extra pounds can reduce your wellness age by 2-3 years. An extra 30- 50 pounds can reduce as much as 6-8 from your wellness age. • Have a healthy blood sugar tolerance: Elevated fasting blood sugar levels greater than 110 ml/dl can reduce 3-4 years from your wellness age. Increased fasting blood sugar levels indicate the breakdown of the insulin sugar system which affects every
other biological system in the body. Your goal is to strive for between a 70-90 fasting blood sugar level without medication. Exercise, healthy eating and embracing effective stress management are the best ways to improve blood sugar tolerance. • Improve cholesterol ratio: Having plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and refraining from animal products greatly improves LDL levels. Moderate physical exercise is the best way to improve HDL levels. • Improve blood pressure: Having a blood pressure of less than 120 over 80 without medication can add 4 to 5 years to your wellness age. • Get at least 7 hours of sleep a night: Add 5-8 years to your wellness age by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day and achieving 7 or more hours of sleep. Optimal sleep allows the body and mind to rejuvenate and regenerate. On of the quickest ways to age your body is to short change your sleep. • Practice meditation and other stress management skills: Taking time to meditate and practice mindfulness on a daily basis can add up to 8 years to your wellness age. Prayer, deep breathing, visualization and practicing faith are the best ways to combat negative stress. • Eat 9 servings of fruits and vegetables and reduce refined carbohydrates and animal products: Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains every day and reducing or eliminating animal products adds 4 to 6 years to your wellness age. Just by altering your diet on a small scale, you can experience modest improvements in your wellness age. Make the decision to adjust your Wellness Age. A GREAT TIME TO MOVE INTO A SENIOR COMMUNITY
When moving into an independent or an assisted living facility moving is a great way to get a fresh start!
Over a million Americans over the age of 65 will be relocating their place they call home within the next year. Moving can be extremely stressful the older we get. When moving into an independent or an assisted living facility moving is a great way to get a fresh start! A senior’s residence is a place of security. Moving out of the home you spent many years creating memories can be difficult emotionally. But you might want to look at moving into a senior community as a positive move. When we are young we can’t wait to explore new things and get away from the same old –same old. We want to start making memories and planting our roots. Why not think the same way. Look at a Senior Community as an adventure, something that might bring back the great memories from when you were young and getting back into the world out there. A senior community can be a great change. You can meet new people, get rid of all the hassles of house work, and have a easier retirement life. There are several types of residential senior communities to choose from, so you need to explore and find what is right for you. How does one determine which senior community would fit best with their needs? Temporary vs long term care: A senior’s needs are more practical by planning to move into a situation that is most likely to remain for many years to come. Independence: Can you and would you want to live on your own? Or would it be best to find a more service oriented residential facility? Needs for personal care: How much and what kinds of personal or “custodial care” are needed or desired? There are online needs assessment questionnaires to help determine this and then match the care needs with the right type of housing. Needs for medical care: If the senior has a chronic illness that necessitates special medical care, or ongoing services of medical professionals, independent living and even assisted living may not be suitable. Costs: Learn about the financial aspects of senior housing to determine what options are affordable for you. Walk through senior communities that seem suitable. Make a checklist of what each has to offer. Then make your own checklist of your needs and wants. Look over each list with a friend or family member they might have some helpful input to give. Seek guidance from professionals who are experts in senior communities. They can help with the process of identifying your goals and values, assessing your needs, determining what your financial situation will allow and suggesting what facility might be right for you. Seniors have so many choices to make when the search for senior communities. With so many senior housing options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the different kinds of communities. It’s important to learn the differences between the many options and to assess your needs to make the right decision.
