Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and have started off the new year with health and good cheers. They say December and the holiday season is the time for gratitude, but I say January is my time. I absolutely love the new year, new beginnings and a feeling to always make life better. I’ve been working with this paper for so many years and I feel blessed that I have so many contributors writing and great advertisers for our readers to get great healthcare. I hope you love January as much as me! Now that January is here, it is once again time to make those special New Year Resolutions. I think we all dream of being our best self with big plans of drinking more water, volunteering more, patience, adding an exercise routine and on and on. I love challenges and taking on new projects. I encourage all of you to get moving on those new year’s resolutions and sticking with it. Of course, many of us don’t stick with the plan but at least we try and I think that’s what counts. Have you ever started the morning thinking I’m going to eat soup all day that helps detox and drink only green tea and water? Then, by noon you take a huge bite of a cookie. HAHA! Me too! As we all know, we need to be realistic when it comes to personal change. I just don’t think we should make harsh demands on ourselves. Now and then, be tough on ourselves when we don’t fulfill that demand. Getting healthy can be as simple as eating an apple or two a day instead of reaching for a candy bar. Or maybe now is the time to cut back on all the caffeine. I love having a snowy cover in January... even though we might have a had a tad too much. I’m getting used to the weather. The snow as pretty as it is, just makes me lazy. I just want to curl up in front of the fire, have warm tea and read about all the things I should be doing. We hope that you continue reach for our paper every month so you can arm yourself with the best in health information. Continue on your health quest! -Amanda Lewis

WHAT TO EAT FOR A STRONGER IMMUNE SYSTEM By Dr. John Berardi The right foods can prevent you from getting sick and help you recover quicker if you do fall ill. Here’s how to build a strong immune system and help your body fight off the bad guys. You got sneezed on in the subway. Coughed on in the coffee shop. Your colleagues keep coming to work when they should be calling in sick. And your kids are bringing home illnesses you never even heard of. How the heck are you supposed to stay healthy? It might seem like seasonal illness is out of your control. And, yeah, sometimes, sick happens. But you have more power than you think. Your immune system is an incredible thing. The bacteria in your gut is actually a powerful army willing to fight on your behalf, but only if you feed them properly. And if you do get sick, certain foods can help you recover quicker. What you eat today can determine whether or not you get sick tomorrow. immune system Here’s how to build a strong immune system and help your body fight off the bad
guys. The immune system is your best line of defense. OK, gang, it’s time to layer on the armor and bolster our defenses. (And I’m not just talking about scarves and winter coats, though those are probably good to have around too.) To stay healthy, energetic and sick-day-free, we have to strengthen our immune systems. Here’s how the immune system works: Our body’s battle for immunity begins in the mouth. Bet you didn’t know that your saliva contains powerful antimicrobials like lysozyme, alpha-amylase and lactoferrin. Any germs that sneak past those will confront our stomach’s hydrochloric acid. Then, should they survive, they’ll go up against the proteins and chemical compounds in our digestive system that break down bad bacteria. Finally, our own personal good bacterial population goes to work. They prevent bad bacteria from entering our bloodstream or taking root in our small intestine and colon. Those good bacteria are called probiotics. Think of them as an army against illness. Feed your bacteria army. The GI tract comprises over 70 percent of the immune system. That’s home to our good gut bacteria, which fight off a whole lot of yucky stuff. If you want those bacteria to work for you, you’ve got to feed ‘em. They love to chow down on nutrient-dense, fiber-rich whole foods. But processed foods, fats and sugars? Not so much. That’s why a balanced whole-foods diet is your best insurance against all kinds of viruses and infections. In other words, if your diet is lousy, you’ll get sick more often and stay sick for longer. Eating poorly while you’re sick will only make you sicker. Good nutrition, on the other hand, enables your body to deliver a swift roundhouse kick straight to those germy invaders. Prebiotics and probiotics. Want a ready-to-roll squadron of healthy bacteria? Here’s how to keep the soldiers well fed. Prebiotics (aka bacteria food) help nourish our good microbial friends. Essentially, prebiotics are a form of semi-digestible fiber. You should get at least two to three servings of prebiotic-rich foods each day (more if you’re unhealthy and need extra support from your gut flora). Some of the best whole-food sources of prebiotics are: * Vegetables: asparagus, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, leeks and onions * Carbs: barley, beans, oats, quinoa, rye, wheat, potatoes and yams IMMUNE>>page 19

By Cheryl L. Dejewski Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S., affecting more than three million Americans of all ages and races. More than $6 billion is spent annually on treatment of the disease, and the number of cases and costs are expected to skyrocket in the next 15 years. But loss of sight and dollars may be preventable—by learning the facts about glaucoma risks, detection and treatment. How Glaucoma Affects Vision “Glaucoma is a condition in which fluid pressure in the eye affects the optic nerve, thus damaging how visual information is carried from the retina to the brain. Left untreated, it first causes loss of side vision and eventually all sight—permanently. The most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years—until severe permanent damage has occurred,” explains Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthalmology practice that cares for tens of thousands of glaucoma patients. Risk Factors Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and partner at Eye Care Specialists, lists the following risk factors for glaucoma: Age: Glaucoma is most common in adults over age 40, and the risk increases with each decade. Regular screenings should start at this time. Heredity: If you have a sibling or parent with glaucoma, your risk of developing the disease increases 5 to 10 times. As such, relatives of glaucoma patients should have their eyes checked every 1-2 years. Ethnicity: A black person has a 6-8 times higher risk of going blind from glaucoma than a white person. Hispanics and Asians also have a higher risk rate. Other factors: Nearsightedness, diabetes (doubles the risk of glaucoma), steroid use, and having a previous eye injury. Detection Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye surgeon who performs advanced drainage implant procedures to alleviate glaucoma-related eye pressure, advises, “Since glaucoma and other sight-threatening conditions often don’t exhibit early symptoms, regular eye exams are vital after age 40.” A comprehensive exam should include: Ophthalmoscopy (a look inside at the back of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma abnormal optic nerve size and loss of pink coloring), Tonometry (a check of inner eye pressure done either with a puff of air or by painlessly touching the eye), Visual Field Testing (to create a computerized “map” of the range of existing sight, Gonioscopy (use of a special lens to see in to check if the drainage angle of the eye is open or closed), and an OCT laser scan (a painless scan similar to a CT scan to diagnose, track and treat changes to the optic nerve and retina—often before damage occurs). Dangers Glaucoma-related “tunneling” (loss) of side vision makes it difficult to safely navigate stairs, stay in the proper driving lane, detect obstacles, etc. As such, glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of having a car accident by up to six times and triples the risk of falling. Medical Treatment Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage and vision loss. The most common type is a lifelong condition that requires continual management with prescription eye drops to lower pressure (by either decreasing fluid production or increasing outflow). JAMES “My stay at ManorCare Health Services – Pewaukee was great. I came in for rehabilitation after a traumatic injury. The staff was well trained, organized and worked hard to attend to my needs – both physically and mentally. They understood my needs and provided the care necessary while maintaining my dignity. The facility was clean and the entire staff was accommodating 24-hours a day. The rehabilitation staff gave me the necessary ‘push’ to attain improvement of my injuries.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions to eat more healthfully, but for seniors, it is particularly important as they age to eat nutritiously. Eating a balanced mix of foods each day offers many benefits for everyone, particularly seniors. Studies have shown that eating well helps reduce the risk of ,SQI-RWXIEH GSQ heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer and anemia. Healthy eating also has been shown to help reduce high blood pressure and lower high cholesterol. If a senior already has one of these health issues, eating well and regular exercise or physical activity can help manage it. Eating healthfully also supplies the body with the nutrients needed to keep organs, bones and muscles healthy, because the nutrients in healthy food offers vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, water, protein and beneficial fats. So, in honor of the New Year, below is a list of tips to help seniors and their loved If you own a small business and can’t afford advertising, ones or CAREGivers ensure they’re meeting their goal of better senior nutrition and we have a solution for you. Vegetables are a great source of fiber and a low-calorie source of nutrients. ¡ Spice it up: Seniors sometimes lose their sense of taste and smell. YOUR HEALTH QUESTIONS ANSWERED! Question: I love fast food, but I am trying to lose weight and improve
my health. Is it okay to eat fast foods while on a diet program?
Answer: Yes, but as always, there are a few important points to keep in mind. We all know fast food isn’t necessarily the healthiest meal in town, but we also know that setting realistic goals is an important component of any successful weight loss program. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to completely deprive yourself of fast food, especially if it’s appropriate for your specific situation. In other words, if you’re crunched for time, fast food may be the only reasonable option. That said, if an occasional trip turns into four or five weekly trips, your weight loss efforts and health goals will likely suffer as a result. The key is to become a savvy shopper and watch out for calorie-laden foods with added sugars, sodium, and fat. Look for a Nutrition Facts pamphlet in local restaurants and educate yourself on their menus. If you make the effort, you’ll be able to find a sensible meal no matter where you go. Remember, balance, variety, and moderation are the words to live by when it comes to food. If you apply these principles regularly, you won’t have to sacrifice your health and wellness goals when eating out.

Question: I’ve heard some people say dieting just doesn’t work, and
that you should focus on exercise if you want to lose weight. Is this true?
Answer: No, this is simply not true. If you’ve ever looked at food labels and compared them to the calorie counters on your exercise equipment, you’ll likely come to some startling conclusions. It is much easier to decrease your calorie intake by 300500 calories per day than it is to expend that many more calories each day through exercise. Researchers have addressed this issue as well, and it is generally accepted that diet is the more important variable when it comes to weight loss. Exercise is still beneficial however, and actually plays a much more prominent role in weight maintenance. Here’s the bottom line… incorporate both healthy eating and exercise no matter where you are in the weight loss process.
Question: My wife thinks she’ll get big and bulky if she starts lifting
weights with me. How do I convince her otherwise?
Answer: This comes up all the time, and it’s one of the biggest myths out there. First of all, women simply don’t have the proper hormonal balance to put on large amounts of muscle tissue. Secondly, even if they did have the right physiology, it would take some serious training to do it. Getting bigger muscles requires high-volume workouts (lots of sets and repetitions) and a pretty high intensity level as well. Picking up a few weights here and there isn’t a recipe for building mass—it’s what you do and how you do it that really makes the difference. Remind your wife that weight training programs can always be tailored to specific goals, so if she doesn’t want to put on large amounts of muscle, that’s just fine. Generally speaking, a fullbody circuit with higher repetition ranges a few days per week would work well if she’s just looking to tone up or maintain her current level of muscle tissue. If she wants to get an individualized program based on her goals, look for a qualified personal trainer in your area. For more information visit www.anytimefitness.com JANUARY 2017 MHL 11

Ayurveda
“the complete knowledge for long life”
Ayurvedic medicine (also called Ayurveda) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It originated in India and has evolved there over thousands of years. In the United States, Ayurvedic medicine is considered complementary and alternative medicineA group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, and alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. (CAM)—more specifically, a CAM whole medical systemA complete system of theory and practice that has evolved over time in different cultures and apart from conventional medicine. Examples of whole medical systems include traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, and naturopathy.. Many therapies used in Ayurvedic medicine are also used on their own as CAM—for example, herbs, massagePressing, rubbing, and moving muscles and other soft tissues of the body, primarily by using the hands and fingers. The aim is to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the massaged area., and specialized diets. This fact sheet provides a general overview of Ayurvedic medicine and suggests sources for additional information. The aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit. This is believed to help prevent illness and promote wellness. Ayurvedic medicine uses a variety of products and techniques to cleanse the body and restore balance. Some of these products may be harmful if used improperly or without the direction of a trained practitioner. for example, some herbs can cause side effects or interact with conventional medicines. Before using Ayurvedic treatment, ask about the practitioner’s training and experience. Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Years of Pain Taken Away, Local Doctor Offers New Therapy
Offer ends January 31, 2017
I am proud to announce that we are now offering Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, or PEMF Therapy, to complement the many unique therapies used to make our patients well. Used for decades in Europe for many medical conditions, and studied by NASA, modern PEMF Therapy is relatively new in the US. Peer reviewed research collected by the US National Library of Medicine, on the campus of the National Institutes of Health, has shown the effectiveness of PEMF Therapy for the following chronic conditions: Fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, osteoarthritis, low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, pelvic pain, fractures, osteoporosis, symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease, strokes, insomnia, and slow-healing wounds. Simply put, the cells of your body are much like your car’s battery. Over time the cells in your body lose their electrical charge, due to age, sickness, and trauma. PEMF therapy recharges your cells, much like re-charging or jumping your car battery. Re-charging your cells helps to bring oxygen and nutrients into the cells, and pumps waste and toxins out of the cells. This will allow the body to heal faster and more efficiently. When your body is healthy, you sleep better, experience more energy, and are less likely to experience pain and inflammation. PEMFs deliver beneficial, health-enhancing electromagnetic fields and frequencies to the cells which promotes the healing process in damaged and painful tissue. In the 16 years of my practice, I have been able to help hundreds of patients overcome chronic conditions using an array of unique therapies. It has always been a passion of mine to find new and better ways to help my patients, so that is why I am proud to offer the first full-body PEMF Therapy device in SE Wisconsin. I could not remember the last time I slept through the night. I could not remember when I didn’t have low back pain. I went to my doctor, and he gave me pills which did not work. The doctor sent me to a surgeon. The surgeon recommended physical therapy and shots which did not work either. This went on for a year and a half. I could not stand the pain anymore. Eventually my medical doctor referred me to Dr. Lo. I was crying for a week and a half when I went to Dr. Lo, because the pain was so horrible. After the first week, I started to sleep through the night. Then the pain went away. Today, I am a completely different person. I don’t have the pain anymore. My mind is clearer. I am not frustrated or worried about living life in pain. Dr. Lo’s treatments have worked. He helped me incredibly”. Pat Kramer – Oconomowoc JANUARY 2017 MHL 13

HONORING THE GIFTS OF LOSS By Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D. Last year was a year of profound loss for me. The greatest and deepest loss I bore was the sudden and unexpected death of my mother. After her death, I was plunged into a well of grief which brought with it a need to process the complicated and multi-layered journey of her life and our relationship. Over the past many months, I have a deeper and more profound sense of what is truly important. Death is a sublime perspective shifter, illusion corrector, and authenticity maker. The grief spiral has a life of its own which shapes us with its sharp and tender edges in an attempt to restore wholeness, humanness, and vulnerability. Ten years ago, a bitter divorce primed me with a loss so deep I felt I would never recover. But the process it catalyzed brought me closer to my true self in unexpected and powerful ways. My adaptations to abuse had left my soul with such deep fractures that I did not even realize how far apart I had grown from my true self. My commitment to processing my pain uncovered a treasure that I continue to draw from. For maybe the first time, I was able to feel how my true self exuded joy and powerful feelings underneath my adapted and conditioned self. My mother’s death was a different kind of loss. It was more complex and more cellular. After her death, I felt a vacuum in my body. It is as if her energy that occupied my cellular matter when she was alive, left with her upon her death. I was left with this unfamiliar feeling inside of emptiness, yet the spacious quality in my body allowed me to fill it with a different energy - mine. The process that began with the divorce over the past ten years and which connected me to true self was what I could now engage to fill this spaciousness. The paradox of finding these gifts hidden inside a profound loss began to heal me even more deeply. I also felt that as I continued my individuation process since my mother’s death, it would somehow help her move through her current passage to some ‘next level’, bringing her more peace and offering healing to the maternal lineage I was to carry forward. Clearing out her closet, sorting through her 80 year collection of keepsakes and precious objects was a spiritual exercise that brought me face to face with the hidden gifts that these possessions carried. I could hear her voice and literally see her tucking these keepsakes away as milestones that marked stages of her life, her children’s lives, and the passage of time. I found a pin from TWA that was gifted to me by a flight attendant on a flight from India when I was two years old. I also found a pen she saved for 52 years from Disneyland, a memento that marked our coming to America. These keepsakes marked my life, as well, and led me through years of evocative memories about my own biography. They evoked feelings that lay dormant over the years in my cellular matter, in my heart, and soul. They evoked comfort about aspects of my relationship with her that were precious and connected amidst the cracks in her soul from the trauma of her childhood and her life. They marked the thresholds throughout my life and defined me even more deeply. Alongside these precious memories were also painful ones, times of struggle, hardship, and rebellion due to her resistance against her feeling function and living a liberated life. She was bound by her trauma and cultural conditioning. It’s what she felt defined her and what she was unable to let go of and transform during her lifetime. Sorting through a lifetime of memories, the accompanying grief and feelings of loss, I am left with many gifts of perspective. Going through this process in midlife is also a gift. The profound potential that midlife offers of transforming from an adapted to an authentic self is the hallmark of this stage of life lived consciously. At this juncture, nothing but truth, love, meaning, and health really matters. Death is one of the 14 MHL JANUARY 2017

Much of human physiology is the same in men and women, and the treatments for problems in those areas are the same no matter the gender. That is not to say that there is only one approach to treatment only that it is treating the same muscles, nerves and organs without regard to gender. Thatbeing said, one must incorporate any gender influence in all treatments Many of the problems we suffer are caused by stagnation of Qi, Blood and/or organs. ln women it is the complexity and interaction of the female organs that have a great influence on the body. Theseorgans perform many more complex processes and this opens the door to more varied and complextreatments. Acupunctures main purpose is to balance the body. A balanced body is essentially a healthy body. ln women the complex nature of the female physiology requires more skill in putting the body back in balance. Emotional issues can upset a normally balanced digestive system. As the digestive system becomes unbalanced, daily functions are affected and this in turn leads to further unbalance. These kinds of problems provide a challenge and require greater effort and treatments to resolve the imbalance. Also the monthly cycle can play havoc with the best of treatments. The body finds itself out of balance every month with a variety of problems from pain, digestion and emotional issues. The resulting problems can change from month to month and thus there is no “one treatment that will work every month”. Over time the acupuncturist becomes familiar with the patients symptoms and response to treatments. Using this information allows them to assist their patients to have faster and better outcomes. This will provide a happier and healthier life. So consider acupuncture to help you with your “female problems”. It could be the solution you have been looking for. for symptoms of menopause?
WHAT ABOUT HORMONES
16 MHL JANUARY 2017
Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) uses hormones to ease the symptoms of menopause or to prevent osteoporosis. The hormones are estrogen alone for a woman who no longer has her uterus or estrogen with progesterone or a progestin (a progesterone-like medicine) for a woman with a uterus. When a woman is taking estrogen, progesterone or a progestin is needed to protect the lining of the uterus, the endometrium. This lowers the chance of unwanted endometrial thickening and of endometrial cancer, an uncommon, but possible result of using estrogen alone. Estrogen and progesterone/progestin come in many different forms—pills, creams, or skin patches, for example—and a variety of types and doses. The FDA recommends that MHT be used at the lowest dose that relieves symptoms for the shortest time needed. Similar to the effect of using low-dose birth control pills before menopause, using menopausal hormone therapy before your last period can make it difficult to know when menopause has occurred. That is, you might continue to have a period because of the hormones you are taking even after your ovaries are no longer making estrogen and progesterone. If you have had a hysterectomy with your ovaries removed also, your doctor might suggest that you start using estrogen right after the operation. This may prevent hot flashes and other symptoms. If, later, you decide to stop using estrogen, however, bothersome menopausal symptoms could still start, even years after the surgery. Many women find MHT relieves their menopausal symptoms, but not all women should use this therapy. If you are considering using MHT for troublesome menopausal symptoms or to prevent osteoporosis, you can read an up-to-date discussion of MHT, including the benefits and risks of both MHT and bioidentical or natural hormones, in the Hormones and Menopause tip sheet from the National Institute on Aging (NIA).
POSTURE PROBLEMS HOW MASSAGE THERAPY CAN HELP It’s no surprise that so many of us are no longer aware of our posture and are starting to hunch already at a young age. Whether you are an executive spending long hours at the office staring at a computer screen, a salesperson spending hours on the road or a stay at home mom taking care of the home and family, these daily activities take a toll on our bodies. How we carry ourselves and our posture says a lot about who we are. How hard we work, our level of security or happiness or how stressed we are. Poor posture is now noticeable in all ages. With all the demands women have and the list of tasks to
be completed in a day, it’s no wonder why you would feel like you just ran a marathon. It feels like every muscle in your body aches and you feel drained of energy. It’s no surprise that so many of us are no longer aware of our posture and are starting to hunch already at a young age. Whether you are an executive spending long hours at the office staring at a computer screen, a salesperson spending hours on the road or a stay at home mom taking care of the home and family, these daily activities take a toll on our bodies. The primary target is the upper body, especially the back where the stress can really strike hard. Working at a computer for too long without a break to stretch once in a while can stiffen the back and neck fairly quickly. Long hours of driving will have the same affect and also fatigues the legs muscles as well. Constantly bending to lift children or all the household tasks stress the entire back. Imbalance also occurs when placing too much weight on one side more than the other while either carrying groceries or toting around a heavy purse or laptop. Emotional stress can physically change a body’s posture as the sympathetic nervous system, the fight or flight response engages, we stiffen up our muscles in defense and depending on the situation, we can stay locked in this compromising posture for years. Of course we can’t stop living or moving but how we choose to maintain our bodies is the key. Massage therapy can change the way you look and feel. There are many postural imbalances that massage therapy can correct. Proper posture is shoulders relaxed, brought back so that they are in a straight line with the ears and hips. There are natural curves to the back but some are exaggerated due to imbalance. Too much of an upper back curve is referred to as hyperkyphosis and hyperlordosis for the lower back. An effective massage treatment will first address the muscle group primarily causing the dysfunction. In the case of low back pain, the center quardricep or thigh muscles, can be too tight. These are specifically postural muscles that help us to stand up straight. Once these muscles are smoothed out and relax, they start to lengthen and shift the body to a more upright position, therefore relaxing the overstretched low back muscles. Upper back pain can be due to tight pectoral or chest muscles which cause the back to roll inwards creating that hunch. This also can pull the neck and head forward as well. The neck muscles are loosened to bring the head back. The shortened pectoral muscles are treated to relax and lengthen them which brings the shoulders back. Now the back itself is treated to smooth out the knots and any remaining restricted tissue is released. Just one massage therapy session can make you feel taller, not to mention boosting your confidence, making you feel younger, stronger and a bit lighter and happier.

* Fruits: apples, bananas, berries, citrus fruits, kiwifruit * Fats: flaxseed and chia seeds You can also take a prebiotic supplement. Just remember, supplements are exactly that -- an addition to the real foods you’re eating, not a replacement for them. Meanwhile, probiotics (the bacteria themselves) help us stay healthy and recover faster once we get sick. If you’re healthy, aim for one to two servings of probiotic-rich foods each day (more if you are trying to prevent or alleviate a medical problem). Some of the best whole-food sources of probiotics are: * Dairy: yogurt, cheese and kefir with live and active cultures * Fermented vegetables: pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi * Fermented soy: miso, tempeh * Miscellaneous: soy sauce, wine, kombucha You can also take a probiotic supplement to give your healthy gut bacteria an extra helping hand -- just check with your doctor first. Eating lots of prebiotics and probiotics will help you fight off viruses and bacterial infections. But even the healthiest diet can’t protect you from every invader. Sometimes we just get sick. How to get un-sick. We’ve been told a million times there’s no cure for the common cold. But is there a way to at least speed up recovery when we’re sick? As a matter of fact, there is. Certain foods can help you kick that crummy feeling quicker. For example: * Garlic: It acts as an antibiotic and lessens the severity of colds and other infections. * Chicken soup: Yep, chicken soup actually works. It provides fluids and electrolytes and may contain anti-inflammatory properties that decrease cold symptoms. You have to eat real chicken soup though -- the kind you make from simmering a chicken carcass -- not the kind from a can. * Green tea: It boosts the production of B cell antibodies, helping us rid ourselves of invading pathogens. * Honey: It has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and helps suppress coughs. A few teaspoons in a cup of green tea are all you need. * Elderberries: These have antiviral properties and are loaded with phytonutrients. Elderberry extract may reduce the duration of colds and other upper respiratory tract infections. What about “feed a cold, starve a fever”? Should we really fast while feverish? While there could be a degree of truth to the old saying, our bodies are complicated. Science hasn’t given us a firm, one-size-fitsall answer yet. Here’s all you really need to know: Listen to your body. Our own appetite cues probably give us the clearest picture of what we should eat (or avoid eating) when we’re sick. For example, very few of us want to eat when suffering from influenza or gastroenteritis. That’s because flu-like bugs and bacterial infections create inflammation that leads to appetite suppression. So, if your body’s telling you not to eat, you should probably listen. What are you eating most of the time? It’s cool to think about the power of specific foods, but if you really want to give your immune system a boost, consider how you eat most of the time. For example: * How much are you eating? Consistently over- or undereating could compromise how the immune system responds to invaders. If your diet is broken, it’s time to fix it. * What’s your fat intake like? Chowing down on an abundance of fats (especially saturated fats and omega-6 fatty acids) could harm your gut and compromise your immune system. On the other hand, a moderate intake of healthy fats, such as nuts, olive oil and avocados, can supply a good source of vitamin E, which may help minimize your risk of influenza and respiratory infections. * Hooked on sugar? Added sugars and high-glycemic-load diets may reduce white blood cell function and encourage inflammation, damaging your overall immune system. * Getting enough protein? On the other hand, dietary protein insufficiencies and/ or depletions in iron and zinc may lower overall immunity. In general, one palm-size portion of protein for women and two palm-size portions for men should be included at each meal. * Are you eating the rainbow? Lots of fruit and vegetables are needed to get the vitamins and minerals your immune system needs. That includes iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, copper, folic acid and vitamins A, C, D, E, B6 and B12. So, boys and girls, do what your mother told you and eat your veggies. Remember: An overall, healthy balanced diet that supports your immune system is your best bet to avoid getting sick in the first place. --John Readers -- How do you keep your immune system healthy? Linda Berman, M.Ed. , Coach In Your Corner When it comes to giving support and motivating your child to do their best at school, YOUR role is just as important as the teachers. The following suggestions are simple ways to help your child succeed: Show that school is important- Speak positively about education, insist on good attendance and punctuality, and ask your child how school was on a daily basis. Get involved- Meet with your child’s teachers, check in with them periodically by phone or email, attend school events and volunteer your time there whenever possible. Make a checklist with your child- Discuss the importance of having everything they need before leaving for school each morning and returning home each afternoon. To insure an easy, peaceful start to the day rather than going through a stressful morning “rush hour”, create a consistent routine for your child and have a place for everything. For example, have a specific spot for the backpack, lunch box or money and jacket near the door. When your child returns home, those items go back to the exact same place. Before bed, check that the backpack has completed homework and materials in it and then everything is ready for the next morning. Create a study routine- Set up a quiet place and time for your child to do homework every day. It is usually helpful to allow for “study breaks” and to provide healthy “homework snacks”. Be available- It can be comforting to your child if you are within reach when they are studying or preparing for tests. If there is a question or problem, try prompting

Making Your Next Move
140 years old and still turning heads.
A SMOOTH ONE Decide where you want to live. Seems pretty simple, but consider many things. Would you like to be close to family, friends, shopping centers, healthcare facilities? Will you need to use transportation other than your car? Will you have access to recreational activities? Do you want to climb flights of stairs? Do you want maintenance-free living? Is it secure and safe? Do you need assistance with daily activities? Can you keep your pet? Research new home alternatives long before you make your move. Spend time in the area where you plan to move and get answers to all your questions. Clear out the old. Whether you are moving to a smaller home, apartment, or senior residence you need to downsize your possessions. Sort through your belongings and keep what you absolutely need. Go to the least used rooms and areas first. Sort only a few hours at a time to avoid being overwhelmed. At this time you should create a floor plan of your new living space showing each room and the placement of each piece of furniture. Take measurements of each room. Make a note of doors, windows, outlets. Take measurements of your furniture. Give the remaining items to family and/or friends. Think about having an estate sale, a tag sale or donating belongings to charities (many charities will pick up the items at your home). Keep in mind space limitations. Let family members know what you plan on taking with you. Make a schedule of the times when you expect to have family members, friends, or charities pick up the items. Clearly label all items, use colored stickers to mark what will or will not go to your new home. This will help you remember what goes where when you begin packing. Get your house ready to sell. If you plan on selling your home it’s time to make minor repairs and note major repairs which you should report to your realtor. Small repairs make the home look well cared for and usually cost little time and money. These details make a difference in how the buyer views the home. Itemize cosmetic changes such as fresh paint or new carpets. The home looks ready to move into. Be sure to keep up the exterior maintenance of your home. Remove interior clutter. All of these tips create a favorable impression on a buyer. Renters make sure your apartment is clean and contact your apartment manager to discuss what time your apartment will be shown. Pack it up. Packing should be easy for you and your family or professional movers if you’ve already labeled and sorted your belongings. If you are doing the move yourself be sure to have enough boxes, packing materials, and tape. Do not wait until the last minute to decide whether or not to keep an item. Make all decisions about the belongings you intend to keep long before packing day arrives. Try to do packing a day or two before you move if you are doing it yourself. Of course if you hire professional movers, let them do the packing for you. It will be less stressful on you and will guarantee that the moving company insures the contents of the boxes in case of damage. Also keep in mind that if the move takes longer because you are disorganized, the movers may charge more. Label each box with the room where it will be placed and list a few of the items contained. You can even photograph your belongings so you have a record of their condition before the move. Take special care of your smaller valuables. You’ll want to keep them separate from the other boxes. Carry them on your person, or place them with your personal items. You may even want to place them in a safe deposit box during the move. If you choose a professional mover be sure to consult two or three reputable companies and always get a written estimate. If you label all the belongings that are to be moved this will help you to receive consistent bids from potential movers. MOVE>>page 35

HOW TO BEGIN THE SEARCH FOR AN
Older Adult Residence Here are a few simple things to keep in mind that will help you get started, and give you an idea of the questions you need to ask.
By Marlene Heller Very often adult children are the ones to whom the task falls of finding a place for their aging parents to live. As if it isn’t already an emotionally difficult job, the terminology is difficult to understand, the choices are confusing, and most residences make comparisons very hard to make. After all, how do you compare a one bedroom extended with services with a plain one bedroom and what does that even mean? Here are a few simple things to keep in mind that will help you get started, and give you an idea of the questions you need to ask. Independent or Assisted Living? Independent Living is like living on your own in an apartment building. You get no services or nursing care at all; you come and go as you please; you have no special health requirements. Assisted Living means you need help with at least one of the “activities of daily living,” or ADLs. They are dressing, feeding, bathing, toileting, and transferring (moving from bed to chair, chair to walker, etc.). In order to be accepted into an assisted living, the nurse manager of the establishment will do an assessment of the prospective resident to determine if the applicant is, indeed, a candidate for assisted living. At the same time, the nurse manager will make sure that the facility will be able to meet his or her needs. RCAC Some facilities are licensed to offer “à la cart” assisted living services in an independent living apartment. The resident would pay a fee to be under the nursing services of the residence. The permits them to keep a chart on the resident, speak to the resident’s physicians, and document his or her care. The resident can then choose certain other services, which are paid for separately. This is different from true assisted living, in which all the services are included in the rent. How big an apartment does Mom really need? This is one of the hardest things to come to terms with. For many people in Wisconsin, this will be the first time they have moved in 52 years. They are used to being in their houses, with so much furniture, and many personal belongings around them. Then they tour an assisted living or independent apartment. If it is as small as a studio apartment -- one room -- they are shocked and dismayed. Even though some of them seem quite spacious, with a small kitchenette, full bathroom, and lovely view out of the windows, it is still quite a difference from what Mom or Dad is used to. But often the reality is that the great big house they are used to is going to waste. Think about what rooms are actually being used. In most cases, it is the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Perhaps one other room as well. It is a good idea to discuss

FINDING THE RIGHT...
Senior Housing
By Jan Rupnick Senior housing has come a long way over the years. Starting approximately 30 years ago, this industry saw new options develop to meet the demands of a growing senior population. Initially limited in its offerings, there is now a plethora of senior housing options available. With more and more baby boomers getting ready to retire, the senior housing market is growing with new senior housing developments. Some baby boomers are looking into senior housing options for themselves, while others are looking for communities that can help care for their aging parents. Finding the right option comes down to knowing what’s available and understanding the needs of the person who is going to be living in the community. Below are descriptions of the various senior housing options available and the segments of the senior population that they serve. Independent Senior Housing For seniors who are tired of maintaining their own home or looking to down-size, independent senior housing is ideal. Those looking to move into an independent senior living community have two choices. One is to purchase a senior condominium and the second is to rent a senior living apartment. Both provide independent, active seniors with the freedom they enjoy, but without all of the burdens of home ownership like mowing the lawn, shoveling the snow, or making home repairs. Some independent senior communities have also adapted a lifestyle approach, including such amenities as a salon and spa, golf course, on-site restaurants, on-site shopping, housekeeping and more. Assisted Living Assisted living provides a great alternative for seniors who need some additional help with medication, grooming, dressing, eating, etc. Assisted living has two options including; Residential Care Apartment Communities (RCAC), which allows seniors to live in their own apartment, but only offers 28 hours of care, and CommunityBased Residential Care Facility or CBRF. This type of community is an ideal living option for seniors who need more assistance that what can be provided by an RCAC, offering care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Assisted living communities tend to offer more of a residential, home-like environment, as well as provide meals, social activities, housekeeping and transportation. Specialized Care Community There are some CBRFs that specialize in caring for one kind of illness. One of the most common is an Alzheimer’s or memory impairment care community. In specialized assisted living communities, the environment, staff and programming is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of those individuals who are living there. Like a non-specialized assisted living community, a specialized care community also provides 24/7 care, social programming, meals, housekeeping and transportation are generally provided. Nursing Home This is probably the most commonly known, but often confused type of senior living option. It’s also one of the only options that used to be available to seniors. Nursing homes provide 24-hour skilled nursing services for seniors who need rehabilitation after a surgery, or require care for issues like feeding tubes. The levels of hospitality services in nursing homes vary greatly depending on their targeted clientele. Whether you’re looking to down-size your home or a community to meet the needs of an aging parent, there is a senior living community to meet your needs. Being prepared and understanding the options available will help you to choose what type of senior living community is best for you or your loved one. 26 MHL JANUARY 2017

But it’s important to find ways to reach out and connect to others. Loneliness and isolation are major threats to aging well. Having people you can turn to for company and support is a buffer against depression, disability, hardship, and loss. The good news is that there are lots of ways to be with other people. It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you get out of the house (if possible) and socialize: Connect regularly with friends and family. Spend time with people you enjoy and who make you feel upbeat. It may be a neighbor who you like to walk with, a lunch date with an old friend, or shopping with your children. Even if you are not close by, call or email frequently to keep relationships fresh. Make an effort to make new friends. As you lose people in your circle, it is vital to make new connections so your circle doesn’t dwindle. Make it a point to befriend people who are younger than you. Younger friends can reenergize you and help you see life from a fresh perspective. Spend time with at least one person every day. You shouldn’t be alone day after day. Phone or email contact is not a replacement for spending time with other people. Regular face-to-face contact helps you ward off depression and stay positive. Volunteer. Giving back to the community is a wonderful way to strengthen social bonds and meet others, and the meaning and purpose you find in helping others will enrich and expand your life. Volunteering is a natural way to meet others interested in similar activities or who share similar values. Even if you’re housebound, you can get involved by volunteering on the phone. Find support groups in times of change. If you or a loved one is coping with a chronic illness or recent loss, it can be very helpful to participate in a support group with others undergoing the same challenges.
Healthy aging: Tips for boosting vitality
Don’t fall for the myth that aging automatically means you’re not going to feel good anymore. It is true that aging involves physical changes, but it doesn’t have to mean discomfort and disability. While not all illness or pain is avoidable, many of the physical challenges associated with aging can be overcome or drastically mitigated by eating right, exercising, and taking care of yourself. It’s never too late to start! No matter how old you are or how unhealthy you’ve been in the past, caring for your body has enormous benefits that will help you stay active, sharpen your memory, boost your immune system, manage health problems, and increase your energy. In fact, many older adults report feeling better than ever because they are making more of an effort to be healthy than they did when they were younger.
Healthy aging: Tips for eating well as you age
As you age, your relationship to food changes along with your body. A decreased metabolism, changes in taste and smell, and slower digestion may affect your appetite, the foods you can eat, and how your body processes food. The key is to figure out how to adapt to your changing needs. Now, more than ever, healthy eating is important to maintain your energy and health. Load up on high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Your whole digestive system is slower, so fiber is very important. Consume fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. They will help you feel more energetic and give you fuel to keep going. Put effort into making your food look and taste good. Your tastebuds aren’t as strong and your appetite may not be the same, but your nutritional needs are just as important as ever. If you don’t enjoy eating like you used to, put a little more effort into your meals, including the way you flavor, prepare, and present your food. Watch out for dehydration. Because of physical changes, older adults are more prone to dehydration. So make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re not getting enough water, you’re not going to be as sharp and your energy will suffer. Make meals a social event. It’s more enjoyable to eat with others than alone. Invite people over. You can share cooking and cleanup duties.

HOW TO PREVENT AGING It no longer necessarily means physical decline and illness—in the last two decades, the rate of disability among older people has declined dramatically. People are living longer. In 1970, the average life expectancy at birth was 70.8 years; in 2000, it was 76.9 years; and by 2030 is it estimated that the “oldest-old,” age 85 and older, could grow to 10 million people. Views on aging are also changing. It no longer necessarily means physical decline and illness—in the last two decades, the rate of disability among older people has declined dramatically. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the Federal Government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), investigates ways to support healthy aging and prevent or delay the onset of diseases that disproportionately affect us as we age. These studies not only may increase what is known as “active life expectancy”—the time of advancing years free of disability—but also may promote longevity. NIA’s research includes hormone and dietary approaches, including calorie restriction. Results from NIA-sponsored studies and others are likely to improve our understanding of the benefits and risks of hormone supplements, calorie restriction, and other interventions to promote healthy aging. This tip sheet provides an overview of what we know about hormone supplements and calorie restriction and the research needed to learn more. Until we have a better understanding, it is a good idea to be skeptical of claims that hormone or other supplements can solve your age-related problems. Instead, focus on what is known to help promote healthy aging: healthy eating and physical activity. What Is a Hormone? The word “hormone” comes from the Greek word, hormo, meaning to set in motion. Hormones are chemical messengers that set in motion different processes to keep our bodies working properly. For example, they are involved in our metabolism, immune function, sexual reproduction, and growth. Hormones are made by specialized groups of cells within the body’s glands. The glands—such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testes—release hormones into the body as needed to stimulate, regulate, and control the function of other various tissues and organs involved in biological processes. We cannot survive without hormones. As children, hormones help us “grow up.” In teenagers, they drive puberty. As we get older, some of our hormone levels naturally decline. But what does that mean? Scientists do not know exactly. In order to know more, NIA investigates how replenishing hormones in older people affects frailty and function. Many of these studies focus on hormones that decline with age, including: Growth hormone Melatonin Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Testosterone Estrogen and progesterone (as part of menopausal hormone therapy) How Hormones Work Most hormones are typically found in very low concentrations in the bloodstream. But a hormone’s concentration will fluctuate depending on the body’s activity. Like a key that unlocks a door, a hormone molecule is released by a gland and travels through the blood until it finds a cell with the right fit, a “receptor.” The hormone latches onto a cell’s receptor and a signal is sent into the cell. These signals may instruct the cell to multiply, make proteins or enzymes, or perform other vital tasks. Some hormones can even cause a cell to release other hormones. One hormone may fit with many types of cells but may not affect all cells in the same way. For example, one hormone may stimulate one cell to perform a task but it might also turn off a different cell. Additionally, how a cell responds to a hormone may change throughout life.

Sightsee You’ll probably be spending plenty of time sightseeing on vacation, so why not factor that into your exercise for the week? Whether you’re moseying around a foreign town square or hiking through a state park, walking can do plenty when it comes to getting your heart rate up. If you feel like your leisurely pace isn’t enough to get your blood pumping, simply up the ante and go for a speed walk after your meals, especially if you indulge in local cuisine. Rather than hailing cabs or driving to each destination, take a walk there if it’s under a mile away. It’s beneficial to look into restaurants and hotel locations before booking your trip so you can find a location that’s easily walkable. Be sure to pack your comfy shoes!
STAYING ACTIVE DURING VACATION Walking isn’t the only way to get around when you’re on vacation. Work some exercise into your tourist activities Vacation is a meant to help you relax. It’s a time to enjoy the company of friends or family. However, when you go those days without getting in your regular exercise, not only will it be difficult to get back into the swing of things when you return from vacation, but you may also find that you feel sluggish. Here are some ways for you get moving when you’re on vacation, without having to use the hotel gym.
Take an adventure Walking isn’t the only way to get around when you’re on vacation. Work some exercise into your tourist activities. If you’re near a body of water, rent a kayak and go on an adventure. If you are staying in a hotel, chances are, it has a pool. Try swimming laps when the pool is empty or when it isn’t too crowded. If you’re staying somewhere with a trail, rent a bike and sightsee that way. All of these activities are low impact, meaning they work your muscles without tiring out your joints. This is a great way to ensure you get your exercise but don’t end up too sore to enjoy the next day! If you’re feeling particularly daring, try paddle boarding or even take a surfing lesson if you’re staying in a beach town. Walk the course when you go golfing this summer.Walk the course when you go golfing this summer. Nix the golf cart Many people enjoy going golfing on their summer vacations. This activity is perfect for people who want to relax, but also have a bit of a competitive streak. Rather than hiring a caddy and cruising around in a golf cart, carry your clubs and walk instead. If you don’t want to risk injuring yourself by carting your clubs around, check to see if there are rolling carts available to rent. You’ll still get the exercise without the possible injury. Not only will this add some physical activity to the mix, but you’ll also save some money!

HEARING LOSS social issolation
E NRICHING
LIVES... through community living
“Mute” the worries of
Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities as we get older. Do you or someone you love avoid social situations due to hearing loss? Many people choose not to engage in social activities because they are embarrassed by their hearing loss. Some folks who cannot understand what others are saying, especially in situations with significant background noise, would rather avoid those situations than have to ask others to repeat themselves. This starts the process of social isolation and can contribute to loneliness depression. Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities as we get older. The loss of hearing due to age is called Presbycusis. This type of hearing loss generally occurs gradually and many people feel they hear “just fine” when in fact, they have a significant loss of hearing sensitivity that affects their social interactions and quality of life. One sign of hearing loss is when people say that they “hear someone talking but they cannot understand what is being said”. This type of comment is typical of someone who is losing their high frequency hearing due to ageing process. When we lose hearing due to age, it is common for high frequencies to be affected first. Since many consonants in the English language are high frequency sounds, the inability of someone to hear these particular sounds interferes with speech understanding. Low frequency sounds are where vowels are located in our language and the power from our speech is low frequency power. Oftentimes speak louder to someone with a hearing loss won’t make things more understandable because the low frequency vowels just get louder and mask the high frequency consonants. WHAT CAN YOU DO? This first step is to identify the problem. Get your hearing evaluated by an Audiologist. Audiologists are trained to identify and manage hearing loss. Management of hearing loss may include referral to an Ear, Nose, and Throat Physician commonly known as an Otolaryngologist. Once any medical issues are resolved, hearing aid amplification may be an option. Hearing aid amplification is an excellent option for someone with hearing loss due to age. As we gradually lose our hearing, our brain will “re-wire” itself to make maximum use of the sound it is provided by our ears. We actually hear with our brains, our ears are just the way the sound gets in. Over time, it is difficult for some to notice or admit that they are not hearing well anymore. Once hearing aids are fit, the brain will need to “re-wire” itself again to adjust to the sounds that have been missing for quite some time. This process can take up to 6 months. Most folks will notice significant improvement with-in the first 30 days. Sometimes people are not comfortable with the cosmetic appearance of hearing aid amplification. That has changed with the invention of “open-fit or thin-tube” fittings today. Cosmetic problems are easily overcome today. There are 2 styles of hearing aids that are nearly invisible when worn. Today’s hearing aids are sophisticated electronic devices. The overwhelming majority of hearing aids dispensed today are digital hearing aids that allow for significant adjustment to meet the user’s sound quality concerns. Digital hearing aids are a huge advantage compared to analog hearing aids of the past. Today’s hearing aids can have different settings for different environments, can be completely automatic, can have remote controls that allow for user adjustments, and can be connected via Bluetooth technology to Televisions and Telephones. Some hearing aids also have re-chargeable batteries and actually communicate with each other to provide the best sound to the user in varying listening environments. One of the most important factors in determining hearing aid success is matching the correct set of hearing aids with an individual’s hearing loss and lifestyle. Digital hearing aids that are the wrong style or technology for a particular hearing loss will still perform poorly. It is vital that your level of hearing aid technology and lifestyle match your hearing loss to get the maximum benefit. Audiologists are the most highly trained individuals to perform these services. Yes, hearing loss can lead to social isolation. But, there are remedies for hearing loss that work well and can bring your social interactions back to life. Do not let your hearing loss affect your quality of life anymore! Age-Related Changes in Memory Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. As people get older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain. As a result, some people may notice that it takes longer to learn new things, they don’t remember information as well as they did, or they lose things like their glasses. These usually are signs of mild forgetfulness, not serious memory problems. Some older adults also find that they don’t do as well as younger people on complex memory or learning tests. Scientists have found, though, that given enough time, healthy older people can do as well as younger people do on these tests. In fact, as they age, healthy adults usually improve in areas of mental ability such as vocabulary. Other Causes of Memory Loss Some memory problems are related to health issues that may be treatable. For example, medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic alcoholism, tumors or infections in the brain, or blood clots in the brain can cause memory loss or possibly dementia (see more on dementia). Some thyroid, kidney, or liver disorders also can lead to memory loss. A doctor should treat serious medical conditions like these as soon as possible. Emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety, or depression, can make a person more forgetful and can be mistaken for dementia. For instance, someone who has recently retired or who is coping with the death of a spouse, relative, or friend may feel sad, lonely, worried, or bored. Trying to deal with these life changes leaves some people confused or forgetful. The confusion and forgetfulness caused by emotions usually are temporary and go away when the feelings fade. The emotional problems can be eased by supportive friends and family, but if these feelings last for a long time, it is important to get help from a doctor or counselor. Treatment may include counseling, medication, or both. More Serious Memory Problems For some older people, memory problems are a sign of a serious problem, such as mild cognitive impairment or dementia. People who are worried about memory problems should see a doctor. The doctor might conduct or order a thorough physical and mental health evaluation to reach a diagnosis. Often, these evaluations are conducted by a neurologist, a physician who specializes in problems related to the brain and central nervous system. A complete medical exam for memory loss should review the person’s medical history, including the use of prescription and over-the-counter medicines, diet, past medical problems, and general health. A correct diagnosis depends on accurate details, so in addition to talking with the patient, the doctor might ask a family member, caregiver, or close friend for information. Blood and urine tests can help the doctor find the cause of the memory problems or dementia. The doctor also might do tests for memory loss and test the person’s problem-solving and language abilities. A brain scan, such as an MRI, may help rule out some causes of the memory problems. What You Can Do If you’re concerned that you or someone you know has a serious memory problem, talk with your doctor. He or she may be able to diagnose the problem or refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist or geriatric psychiatrist. Healthcare professionals who specialize in Alzheimer’s and other dementias can recommend ways to manage the problem or suggest treatment or services that might help. MOVE<<page 23
Once you decide on a mover you should sign a contract showing a specific price. Be sure to understand the amount of insurance that is provided by the mover before you sign a contract. If you have access to the internet or a library try to research what the law requires of moving companies. You’ll be better prepared to ask the right questions. You can even hire a Senior Move Manager or a Moving Coordinator to take care of all the moving details for you. This person can handle your move from assessing your belongings to decorating your new home. The National Association of Senior Move Managers has guidelines for many of these professionals. If you find the thought of a move overwhelming you may want to consider contacting a Mover Manager. Notify your service companies. Contact your utility companies and let them know what day you plan to move. Fill out change of address forms for the post office seven to ten days before moving day. Make sure you have phone service at your current home and new home on moving day. Have the name of the contact of your new apartment or senior residence ahead of time. Know the name of the person you need to contact if a situation comes up on moving day. Some residences will have you reserve a freight elevator. Make sure you know the time of the reservation. If the residence has a dining room, be sure to schedule your move around the meal times. Call on help. On moving day have your family or friends help out even if you have hired professional movers, you may need to put them in charge if you find you need to take a rest from all the activity. Be sure to give the movers the floor plan with furniture placement. This will prevent confusion at your new home. Have an overnight bag packed a few days in advance of the move. This bag should have all your medications, checkbook, traveler’s checks if you are moving a distance or cash, keys, phone numbers, address book, jewelry, toiletries, night clothes, day clothes and anything important you need to have close to hand on moving day. It also doesn’t hurt to keep a few snacks and drinks handy. Keep this bag close to you and away from movers so not to have it accidentally placed with your other belongings. Have pets transported safely to your new home. If you are moving a distance make sure family and friends have a copy of the route and schedule including all stops you will be making. Check all drawers, cabinets, shelves, attic and garage to be sure they are empty. And finally, introduce yourself to your new neighbors. final 1/2 pg bridgeway healthwise ad_Layout 1 3/23/12 11:18 AM Page 1

READY OR NOT...
The most important aspect of pre-planning is making your wishes known. By Gina Botshtein. The question “are you ready?” is commonly heard when people embark on a new journey in their lives-- going off to school, making a career move, starting a family or retiring. It is not usually a phrase associated with getting older. Ask an individual at 60, 70, 90 or 100 and each stage of life brings new perspective. Moreover, the numerical value associated with age is not necessarily an indicator as to what needs to be done to prepare for the aging process. JFS works with over 1,200 older adults each year. Each year we realize that the question “are you ready?” is more relevant than ever. People need to prepare for the aging process and get things in place so that when the time comes, the decisions have already been made. People get ready for trips, special events and retirement. These events are considered positive stepping stones, and while there can be stress associated, they are still a pleasure to prepare for. Aging and the need for assistance
is not always perceived in the same light. If an individual and their family properly plan for the future, the experience of aging can be both pleasant and organized with limited stress and chaos. But, how does one prepare for getting older? The most important aspect of preplanning is making your wishes known. Having powers of attorney for healthcare and finances is critical. This step can be both a cost saving to your family, as well as a guide to your wishes. Another important aspect of pre-planning includes a family meeting to discuss key issues that may arise such as driving, receiving care and placement options. These discussions can take place with the individual as an active participant, which ensures that their wishes are being heard. Many older adults have fears that they do not share with anyone, and a family meeting may give them the opportunity to alleviate such fears and reassure them that their requests will be met. A few years ago at a family meeting, a client expressed when it was no longer safe for him to drive, that his car would go to a grandchild who would also commit to taking him on errands twice per week. Years later, when his macular degeneration made it unsafe for him to be on the road any longer, a grandson stepped forward to make this commitment. Since the grandfather’s wishes had been clearly expressed, it alleviated any family tension or discussions as how to proceed when the time came. Many older adults and their families seek help in a time of crisis because there is no plan in place. Crisis is a situation in which things are very uncertain, difficult, or painful, and a time when action must be taken quickly. Older adults and their families may not have time to review all the options available to them and make thoughtful decisions. This stress can be avoided through pre-planning. While prepaying for a funeral or cemetery plot are important steps in pre-planning, end of life is only one small component of what needs to be arranged. You must not forget to consider all the decisions regarding your care, safety and well-being that need to be made first. The staff of JFS has worked with individuals and families who are still active in assisting them with planning for the future, whether it is facilitating family meetings, developing individualized care plans or just learning about an individual and their wishes so that at a time of crisis, we are able to help navigate the social service system in the most appropriate way for the older adult and their family. Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Milwaukee, WI The cool winds and the snow falls are tell-tale signs: another winter has arrived. Sometimes it’s hard to believe how quickly the seasons change and the years pass by. Whatever season of life you happen to be in, it may be a good time to reflect on the protection you have through Social Security. Each stage of life — from the spring of youth to the summer of middle age to the autumn of retirement — comes with its own set of financial concerns. And in each situation, Social Security is there to help. Of the more than 53 million Americans receiving Social Security benefits, nearly one-third are not retired workers or their dependents. They’re disabled workers and their families, or the survivors of a deceased worker. These non-retirement Social Security benefits can be especially important to young workers because about onein-eight young people will die before retirement, and about one-in-four will become disabled. While the death of a husband, wife, or parent is emotionally devastating, it often can be financially devastating as well. Social Security provides a monthly survivors benefit payment to help the qualified family members of a deceased worker. Social Security disability protection is equally valuable. Few workers have an employer-provided, long-term disability policy. With Social Security, however, the average worker has the equivalent of a disability insurance policy that pays monthly benefits to workers and their families, based on the workers’ lifetime earnings. So you can rest a little easier knowing that Social Security provides some measure of security, if life does not turn out as planned. On the other hand, if you do work and retire as planned, Social Security serves as the foundation for a secure retirement. Social Security is the largest source of income for most elderly Americans today, but Social Security was never intended to be your only source of income when you retire. You also will need other savings, investments, pensions or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably when you retire. The Social Security Statement that you receive in the mail each year provides an estimate of your retirement, survivors, and disability insurance benefits. If you’d like to try out some different scenarios and see how various retirement ages and future earnings may change your retirement picture, visit our online Retirement Estimator at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. It provides an instant, personalized estimate of your future benefits. And perhaps the best news of all is that it’s easier than ever to apply for retirement benefits. You can do it right from the comfort and convenience of your home or office by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov/applytoretire. It can take as little as 15 minutes. MOM STILL HAS STORIES TO SHARE.

“For some patients, when drops alone cannot control pressure, side effects are intolerable, or multiple drops are required, laser treatment may be an alternative. SLT (which increases fluid drainage) and ECP (which decreases fluid production) procedures both take less than 10 minutes to perform at our surgery center and are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans,” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Benefits of Laser Treatment “Laser procedures are highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for drops or surgery. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” says eye care specialist Michael Raciti, MD, who teaches surgery skills to ophthalmology doctors-in-training. Detection + Treatment = Vision Protection “Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in,” says David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. “Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital to protecting and preserving vision.” More Information Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7035 for a free educational booklet and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening (usually covered by insurance or Medicare) at Eye Care Specialists’ offices on 7th & Wisconsin Avenue, Mayfair Road across from the mall, or 102nd & National Avenue. Make it part of your routine to read with your child and have them read to you everyday. It is helpful to discuss what was read, have your child create pictures from the story, do further research on the topic or even write a “sequel” or different a ending of their own. Recognize learning styles- There are simple assessments and information available for identifying individual learning styles. Knowing how your child learns best will help them progress faster. There have been numerous studies and some truly fascinating statistics, including the following from Dr. William Glasser, a leading educational researcher about how we learn: 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we see and hear 70% of what we discuss with others 80% of what we experience personally 95% of what we teach someone else Praise progress and success- You may want to reinforce various accomplishments by rewarding your child with simple words of praise, hugs, certificates of achievement, special meals or small gifts- something that is meaningful to them- whether for taking baby steps or giant leaps toward progress.
