Host Committee Releases Plans, Performers For Super Bowl Live ZZ Top, Gary Clark Jr, The Suffers Highlight Super Saturday Schedule The countdown to Super Bowl LI is on, and with 51 days until the game at NRG Stadium, the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee unveiled the attractions and Super Bowl weekend performers for Super Bowl LIVE in downtown Houston. The Houston Super Bowl Host Committee announced the attractions, exhibits and Super Bowl weekend concert lineup on Friday as part of the festivities surrounding the 51-day milestone to the Super Bowl. ‘Houston pride’ will be the overriding theme throughout Super Bowl LIVE, both in the performers, the attractions and the food throughout the festival.
the PANTHER xpress January 2017
“The Host Committee has championed the theme that Houston is the city of the future throughout our preparations for Super Bowl LI,” Host Committee president and CEO Sallie Sargent said. “There are so many great features and stories to tell about Houston, we wanted to make sure we showcased as many as we could for the thousands of visitors that will be coming here.” A tremendous mix of musical styles and genres will take the main stage of Super Bowl LIVE over the course of the nine days. The Host Committee focused on local Houston and Texas acts to feature on the main stage. Taking the main stage on Saturday, Feb. 4, the day before the Super Bowl, will be ZZ TOP, Gary Clark Jr. and The Suffers. “That Little ‘Ol Band From Texas” is still the original trio of Billy F. Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. ZZ TOP has been dazzling audiences for more than 40 years with their combination of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. 2004 inductees into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing. With Gary Clark Jr’s debut album, Blak And Blu, he became the first artist ever recognized by the Recording Academy with Grammy Award nominations in both the rock and R&B categories for the same album in the same year, winning the latter: Best Traditional R&B Performance” – “Please Come Home.” The Suffers, whose music has been prominently featured by the Host Committee in the preparations for Super Bowl LI, were influenced just as much by classic rock & roll, country, Latin and Southern hip hop as they are the Stax/Volt or Muscle Shoals era. The Suffers bring a fresh approach to what they have coined Gulf Coast Soul. Late night legend David Letterman proclaimed in early 2015 “If you can’t do this, get out of the business.” On Friday, Feb. 3, Leon Bridges, Shakey Graves and Robert Ellis will take the main stage at Super Bowl LIVE. A 26-year-old Fort Worth native, Leon Bridges and Columbia Records released his debut album, ‘Coming Home,’ in June of 2015 to critical and public acclaim. Shakey Graves broke new ground with his self-released 2011 debut album ‘Roll the Bones’. Years later, with “And the War Came”, Graves has stayed near the top of the Bandcamp digital best seller charts. Robert Ellis, a Lake Jackson native, has been on the music scene since his selfreleased debut album “The Great Re Arranger” in 2009. Since then Ellis has been to halftime>>page 7
halftime<<page 6 Nashville and back, releasing a self-titled fourth album in 2016. On Thursday, Feb. 2, Solange, Robert Glasper and Lizzo will perform on the main stage. Solange has released three studio albums and has written songs for, and collaborated with, countless artists across many musical genres. Her most recent album, A Seat At The Table, was released globally on September 30th and charted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. Another Houston native Robert Glasper had a strong musical influence in his mother who played piano and sang gospel music in church as well as in jazz and blues clubs. RGX won a Grammy for Best R&B Album with “Black Radio” in 2013, and another Grammy for Traditional R&B Performance with “Black Radio 2.” The Robert Glasper Trio is nominated for another Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album with “Covered.” Bold and brassy one minute and devastatingly sincere the next, Lizzo, who was born in Houston and now lives in Minneapolis, is an artist that defies easy definition. She’s a gifted rapper, a hair-raising gospel singer, a razor-sharp wordsmith, a classically trained flautist, and a passionate advocate for feminism and black empowerment. She’s a hard-touring road warrior who is equally capable of winning over audiences in London, Paris, New York. Houston-based performers will also be on the main and secondary stage throughout the week, including bands The Tontons, Wild Moccasins, Los Skarnales, Nick Gaitan, Fat Tony, Buxton and many more. Away from the main stage, Houston is still the star of Super Bowl LIVE with the Houston LIVE exhibition located within the Super Bowl LIVE footprint. Houston LIVE focuses on the history of the city with three major themes: ‘Celebrate’, ‘Inspire’, and ‘Energize’. It will showcase the sprit, ingenuity and drive that makes Houston the diverse, dynamic and exciting city of the future. The Host Committee also showcased the space industry by partnering with NASA and leading aerospace companies to create Future Flight, the signature attraction of Super Bowl LIVE. Future Flight combines a virtual reality experience with a 90-foot drop tower that takes passengers on a trip to Mars and back, landing just in time for Super Bowl LI. The Host Committee will also make extensive use of Houston-area food trucks to feed the crowds at Super Bowl LIVE. The trucks will be strategically located in several areas throughout the festival. Super Bowl LIVE is the Host Committee’s signature nine-day fan festival leading up to Super Bowl LI in Houston. The festival, a free event with music, food, games and attractions, will be located in and around Discovery Green Park in downtown Houston from Jan. 28 through Feb. 5, 2017. The Host Committee is anticipating attendance of 1 million people over the nine days. tech>>page 1

MUSIC COMPOSITION STUDENTS IX BRING TECHNOLOGY INTO THE M by Kathy Quirk Natalie Moss started at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee studying computer science, but she found it didn’t really satisfy her artistic side. A switch to music composition gave her a chance to combine her love of technology with her interest in music. Nicholas Elert liked performing rock music, but he found the work he was doing in the studio was what really interested him. Both Moss and Elert are seniors in
UWM’s music composition program, focusing on the intersections between technology and art. Both also had the opportunity this past summer to explore the field through major national and international workshops. The type of composition they do relies less on pen and paper than on manipulating and reworking sounds using a computer and other technology. They collect the sounds from bits of other music, from free websites, from musicians they work
with or just by taking a recorder out and gathering what they hear around them. natalie_moss250x300 Moss spent a month at IRCAM in Paris, the French institute for studying the science of sound and avant garde electro-acoustic art music. As part of her experience there, she composed and performed a song in the “Arte Povera” style, the theme of this year’s program. (Arte Povera, which means “poor art” in Italian, was created in Italy in the 1960s in reaction to the commercialization of pop music and art.) Elert was accepted to the Summer Institute for Performance, Listening, Interpretation and Creation of Electroacoustic Music — SPLICE — at Western Michigan University. He received a UWM undergraduate travel grant to attend the institute, which is a weeklong intensive program for performers and composers that combines live performance and electronics. As part of the event, he collaborated long distance with Von Hansen, an adjunct professor of percussion at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., to compose a piece that was performed at the festival. Moss is a vocalist, but her focus is on music composition, using a virtual synthesizer program to manipulate and create the sounds that she uses in her composition. Growing up in Cedarburg with a father who loves 1970s rock and roll, she became interested in how those synthesized sounds were created.
“There was all that mixing in those ’70s sounds. It really made me wonder: Why does that sound sound like it does?” Elert’s approach is a little different. He writes music for instrumentalists that is augmented by sounds he creates on a computer. The performer’s music is fed into the computer, where it’s turned into strings of numbers and data that Elert can then manipulate. The computer composition can be programmed to respond to react to certain notes or series of notes from the performer in different electronic ways. “This makes it easier for a performer to combine electronic sounds with the live performance,” Elert said. “It frees up the performer from thinking about the technical aspects of what they’re doing. They just play their instrument, and depending on how they play the instrument, the sounds just come out.” The collaboration with Hanson this summer was challenging because the performer and the composer were in different cities, on different schedules and using different computer and electronic setups. “We have a bunch of crusty old synthesizers in the basement. I love synthesizers, so I was making sounds with those, working in tandem with the drummer (Hanson),” Elert said. Since Hanson wasn’t with him in person as they were preparing the perfortech>>page 9

UW-MILWAUKEE PARTNERS WITH CITY YEAR AMERICORPS ON SCHOLARSHIPS
by UWM News The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education and City Year Milwaukee are establishing a partnership that will provide scholarships to members and alumni of the City Year program who enroll in UWM’s School of Education. This is the first agreement of its kind with a Wisconsin university that City Year has established. “City Year corps members spend a year exploring and affirming their commitment to education,” said Rob Longwell-Grice, senior adviser in the School of Education’s Office of Student Services. “UWM-SOE values this experience because our mission is to prepare high caliber educators to serve the students in the region in a variety of careers, including teaching.” City Year AmeriCorps members and alumni are eligible for one of five renewable $2,000 annual scholarships. City Year, which currently operates in 28 U.S. cities, sends AmeriCorps members into high-need schools to help students stay on track through graduation. Last year, City Year Milwaukee corps members provided tutoring, mentoring and classroom assistance to more than 7,400 students in 11 Milwaukee Public Schools. Several students who’ve worked with the City Year program are enrolled in the School of Education. Ebenezer (Ben) Keane-Rudolph, now a sophomore in the School of Education, spent two years with City Year in Milwaukee Public Schools after graduating from high school in Minnesota. “After my first year, I knew I wanted to teach and I wanted to teach here in Milwaukee. Teaching is hard, but there are plenty of good stories – moments when you can say this is why I do this.” He came to UWM’s School of Education because of its focus on urban education, he said. “Our AmeriCorps members receive more than 300 hours of training during their year of service in Milwaukee schools, and gain valuable skills as they work directly with students on a full-time basis, providing academic and social-emotional supports designed to help children reach their full potential,” said Meralis Hood, managing director of impact for City Year Milwaukee. “An increasing number of our corps members are interested in a career in education after their year of service, and we are excited that UWM’s School of Education is offering scholarships to our diverse and talented alumni.”
tech>>page 8 mance, Elert taught himself to play drum to work out some of the initial computer bugs. Both Moss and Elert came to UWM specifically because of the focus on composition and technology. “It’s great to have a resource like this so close,” said Moss. “One of the greatest things about the music department at UWM is that the program is half focused on composition and half focused on technology, so I was able to marry my love of music with my affinity for technology and logical thinking.” Elert toured and recorded with rock bands and earned a degree in guitar performance from MATC, but he liked studio work best. “I wanted to make the studio an instrument I could play somehow. So I started looking for a school that could foster that kind of thing, and that’s how I ended up here. I wanted to become good at this thing that I love doing.” Moss plans to either go on for a graduate degree in the field or do an internship or work at a studio for on-the-job experience. Elert wants to combine composition with teaching and studio work. Both see the field as offering them possibilities. While the music doesn’t attract many fans yet in the U.S., concerts in France sell out, said Moss. “Electronic music is ubiquitous in our world today,” said Elert. “It’s not all beats and sampling Isley Brothers tunes. You can’t always dance to it, which limits the audience, but there’s tons of it out there.”

Panthers Open Horizon League Play With Two Games In Ohio The Milwaukee men’s basketball team closes out the 2016 portion of the schedule with the first Horizon League action of the season, heading to Ohio for a pair of games. Up first is a contest at Youngstown State Thursday, set for a 6 p.m. CST start time. The Panthers look to snap their recent slump and open league play at 1-0 with a victory against the Penguins, an opponent they have defeated five of the past six times the teams have played, including a season sweep a year ago. In addition, Thursday’s affair will have an ESPN3 broadcast, will have live stats available and be carried on WISN AM 1130 with Scott Warras on the call. All links are available on the Milwaukee Athletics website. LOOKING AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE The Penguins were picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League preseason poll following an 11-21 campaign last season. Head Coach Jerry Slocum started this season with 710 career wins, ranking 37th all-time and eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches in victories. The team went 6-7 in non-conference action, including a 4-1 ledger at home and road losses at tough venues at Michigan State and Ohio State. Cameron Morse - an All-Horizon League Second-Team honoree last year - was named to Preseason All-Horizon League First-Team after averaging 20.3 points per game a year ago to finish as the nation’s eighth-leading scorer. This year is more of the same, as Morse is second in the conference and 14th in the country at 22.0 ppg. Francisco Santiago (12.5 ppg) and Matt Donlan (11.7 ppg) also average in doublefigures. SERIES HISTORY The Panthers hold a 29-10 record all-time against YSU in a series that dates back to 1974 (26-10 in NCAA Division I era). Milwaukee has claimed four wins in a row and five of the past six matchups, earning victories of 87-51 at home and 81-65 on the road during the 2016-16 campaign. LAST GAME Milwaukee held Belmont to a season-low in points scored but ran out of time down the stretch in falling, 62-56, at UWM Panther Arena Dec. 19. The Panthers (4-9) led by as many as eight points midway through the first half, but a key scoring run by the Bruins (5-4) helped them take control. A final surge by Milwaukee in the final two minutes made things interesting, but Belmont was perfect from the free throw line down the stretch to protect the lead and escape with the victory. UWM was led by its bench, which outscored its opponent by a count of 28-6 on the evening. Jeremiah Bell and Jeremy Johnson each contributed a team-high 10 points. Bell added five rebounds and a team-best four assists in 23 minutes. Cody Wichmann and Brock Stull each had eight points. Stull added seven rebounds and Bryce Nze grabbed a team-high eight boards to go along with his seven points. LEAGUE LIFTOFF Milwaukee starts league play looking for its sixth win in its last nine league openers. UWM had won five-straight before losing at Detroit in the opener in 2012-13. Overall, the Panthers are looking for their 11th win in their last 16 league lid-lifters. In all, since joining the MCC/Horizon League, Milwaukee is 13-9 in league openers overall. Meanwhile, after 10 straight years of playing at least one league game in the month of December, UWM went the past four seasons (2012-13 to 2015-16) not starting league play until the month of January. REBOUND RATE OF RETURN Bryce Nze is still getting accustomed to the college game, last playing on a regular basis as a high school junior following an injury that cost him his senior season.
While foul trouble has been tough to avoid, rebounding at an impressive level has not. He has been the team’s leading rebounder on five occasions already this season - the most for a UWM freshman since Tony Meier also accomplished the feat five times in 2008-09 (Meier also had three games of 10-plus boards that season, Nze currently has one). Also, with 62 rebounds in just 220 minutes of court time this season, his average of one rebound every 3.55 minutes is actually higher than the leading rebounders in the Horizon League this season. Valpo’s Alec Peters (No. 1 at 10.0 rpg) grabs one rebound every 3.64 minutes on the court and Drew McDonald of Northern Kentucky (No. 2 at 7.6 rpg) collects one rebound every 3.68 minutes played on the court. POSTSEASON PLANS Tickets for the 2017 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championships go on sale December 29. The event will be held in historic Joe Louis Arena, March 3-7, in Detroit. All 20 men’s and women’s teams will compete for the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. HE’S THE (WICH)MANN Cody Wichmann has been leading the way for the Milwaukee offense of late, scoring in double-figures in four of the past five games - topped by a career-best 19 points against Western Illinois Dec. 17. The 19 points clipped his former best of 18 (accomplished twice earlier this season) and has been highlighted by a strong showing from distance. Wichmann has sank at least four triples in three of his past four games, going 16-of-34 (47.1 percent) from behind the three-point line in that stretch. He currently leads the Horizon League with 3.2 made 3’s per game and is fifth in shooting percentage at .442 from beyond the arc. THE NEXT LEVEL The freshmen have been growing up quick for the Panthers this season and been coming through in the scoring column. A duo has led the way with three games of 10-or-more points in Bryce Barnes (game-high of 14) and Jeremy Johnson (also a high of 14). Meanwhile, Bryce Nze (twice in double-figures/high of 15) and August Haas (2/12) have also seen their scoring efforts hit double-figures. For comparison, freshmen accounted for just six games of double-figure scoring a year ago. The highest recent output of double-figure scoring by a frosh over the course of a season was six such games by Austin Arians (2012-13), with Ricky Franklin the most recent UWM freshman to score in double-figures in at least 10 games in his first season in a Panther uniform (Franklin did so 10 times back in 2006-07).

ABOUT THE HORIZON LEAGUE: In its 38th season of operation in the 2016-17 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. Each of the League’s 2,600 Division I student-athletes has the opportunity to maximize athletic development and academic achievement, while also serving the broader community and growing in personal responsibility and accountability. Through athletics, the 150,000-plus undergraduates among Horizon League institutions have the opportunity to come together, learn and grow in life skills and opportunities. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broadbased athletic programs. Membership includes Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Kentucky University, Oakland University, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its core values: studentathlete well-being, integrity, respect and stewardship. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.
OPINIONS
Rodgers is Back! This season again started with a rocky beginning. Probably the most gratifying feeling a true fan can have about an athlete is when they witness a level of achievement and mastery of the sport that has never been seen before. When a person feels they are in the presence of pure excellence and exceptional cerebral capability, they feel inspired by the unique effort put forth by the athlete. The thought that anyone can have such persistence and single mindedness along with God given talent is elating. We’re talking Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, Jim Brown and a very select few people. The average Joe can only live vicariously through this kind of excellence. Aaron Rodgers is easily in this category. He’s what we admire the most as true fans. He’s a machine. He doesn’t make mistakes while making huge, if not, incredible plays with relative ease and amazing frequency. There is no other quarterback with as much upside in the history of the NFL. He is the model of efficiency. If the blocking sucks, he moves around efficiently to
avoid any potential mishaps. His passes are laser sharp and spot on. This guy is accurate. He can run if the play really breaks down. But, most importantly, he has a knack of knowing which is the most efficient move on any given play. He understands risk/reward like an actuary. His risk tolerance is about zero, yet he makes incredible plays like it’s nothing. He must have learned a few lessons from Bret Favre about what not to do. Specifically, give the ball away. I watch First Take on a fairly regular basis and can’t help but see that Stephan A. has the same look in his eye when he talks about Aaron Rodgers. Anyone that truly understands the discipline of sports can only be amazed by Aaron Rodgers. His efficiency is robotic. The reason Skip doesn’t have the same look is because he doesn’t watch him close enough. Watch him closer Skip, he is the Picasso of football. The thing that stops Rodgers from time to time is McCarthy. Whenever McCarthy plays a team that he perceives as better he makes his game just slightly more conservative. This usually means he gets the bone headed idea of trying to establish the running game. This completely destroys Rodgers’ rhythm. McCarthy let me tell you something you should know “Rodgers is a god. Trust in Rodgers. Taking the ball out of his hands is simply inefficient. The defense can know its coming and not stop it. In week two against Seattle, the Packers moved the ball effortlessly down the field when they played five wide receivers and no backs. In other words, they told Seattle they were only going to pass and still couldn’t be stopped. You can tell what kind of day the Packers are going to have by the play calling on the opening drive. If there is more than one running play in the entire
, 3 S
& ÇĄ R / N! /
series, forget about it, McCarthy’s scared. And, that running play better be buried amidst a barrage of Aaron Rodgers. For those who don’t watch the Packers regularly, the defense is not good. It seems moving Matthews to the middle made a positive difference, but Capers doesn’t understand one basic principle of defense. Good defensive teams eat shrapnel for lunch. They’re not eating caviar and relying on voodoo to get the job done. Harbaugh has a steady diet of shrapnel. His teams are feared. A good defense creates fear. Great schemes only come alive when the fear element is ramped up. Then, everything works. The beauty of Rodgers is that you can have no running game and a suspect defense and still have a very good chance of winning. He is that good. You kind of can’t blame McCarthy. He learned a hard lesson after the Super Bowl year. His team sat around and watched Rodgers go 15-1 and then weren’t prepared for the playoff game. I’m sure he vowed he would never make that mistake again, but unfortunately, this is probably his best move. Rodgers is that good. Everyone can know he’s dropping back to pass, but he’ll still get the ball to the receiver like a machine. You have Aaron Rodgers! Give him the ball. In fact, tell him that is what you’re planning to do and tell him all the pressure is on his shoulders. He doesn’t care. He already knows that all the pressure is on him. He’s just glad that you came to your senses and glued the ball to his hand. He embraces the challenge without the albatross of any conservative play calling. McCarthy needs to call the plays like Rodgers is the assassin and he is loading his gun. It’s got to be so cold and so fearless that the other team always has a high level of discomfort at the thought of what attack he is going to unveil.
