This Manhattan-based landmark was created by three likeminded men from Egypt who came to America in search of a lucrative life. Noah A Hit With Uwms “Daily Show” Fans Comedian and “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah perform sat the Milwaukee Theatre Saturday April 16th. By Graham Kilmer Longtime “Daily Show” fan Julia Koster wasn’t going to miss this one. Koster was among the hundreds who caught new “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah’s stand-up comedy act at the Milwaukee Theatre Saturday, April 16. “It’s super exciting that we get someone like Trevor Noah,” Koster said. “He’s known worldwide and has this huge platform.” Sponsored by UWM’s Campus Activities Board, Noah’s act was free for students, and some 1,100 attended despite its off-campus location. For freshman accounting and finance major Victor Marin, who attended with a large group of friends, the Noah show was a chance to stretch his legs in the city. “It’s something different,” Marin said. “It’s nice to just get out of campus, because we do most of our stuff in campus.” Bushra Fathima, a senior biomedical sciences major, said Noah was a great choice for a UWM performance. “He makes everyone kind of introspective,” said Fathima, who snagged a seat among the front few rows what they’re talking about, “and see how we’re not worrying about the rest of the world.” Koster said the Noah show was an example of UWM “moving in the right direction,” coming in the wake of several high-profile political events at UWM. “It says a lot about the student body as well,” Koster said, “in that we’re craving knowledge, so we want intelligent people who are making big moves here at UWM.” Uwm.edu.news

Uwm Earns National Sustainability Award By Alex Vagelatos The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee just became only the second Wisconsin postsecondary school to receive a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award. Chancellor Mark Mone announced the award Friday, April 22 – Earth Day – and noted it was emblematic of UWM’s “organic” approach to sustainability and health and wellness. “This has never been a top-down initiative,” Mone told an audience of UWM faculty, staff and administrators who are involved in the school’s sustainability and environmental efforts. “It has always been due to the hard work of many dedicated people at UWM.” Kate Nelson, UWM’s chief sustainability officer, said the award was based on UWM’s high achievement in three key areas: reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education, incorporating STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.

“The Department of Education was very impressed with UWM’s efforts in combining health and wellness, curriculum and research,” Nelson said. No other UW System school has received the award since its inception in 2012, and the only other Wisconsin recipient has been Western Technical College in La Crosse. Nelson said the education department was particularly impressed with a number of UWM initiatives from the past few years. UWM has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions at all sites by 10 percent and made a large investment in a bicycle-sharing system, resulting in the 2015 placement of six Bublr Bikes stations around campus. “They were also impressed with our Master of Sustainable Peacebuilding program,” Nelson said. That program prepares graduates for careers in government and the nonprofit and private sectors, concentrating on human development, resource stewardship and conflict resolution. Uwm.edu.news

Students worked with architect Joshua Prince-Ramus in person and via Skype on ideas for Milwaukee’s downtown post office.

AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECT, UWM STUDENTS REIMAGINE POST OFFICE By Kathy Quirk Every two years, the School of Architecture & Urban Planning awards the Marcus Prize, a top prize in international architecture, to an up-and-coming architect. Joshua Prince-Ramus, this year’s winner, is founding principal and president of REX in New York. The Huffington Post called him “one of the five greatest architects under 50,” and he was listed among “The 20 Essential Young Architects” by “ICON” magazine. This semester, Prince-Ramus and UWM students have been working to reimagine the installation of a new hybrid function for the downtown Milwaukee post office, 341 W. St. Paul Ave., which is scheduled for eventual redevelopment. Matt Jarosz, adjunct professor and director of the Historic Preservation Institute, and Gil Snyder, associate professor of architecture, discuss Prince-Ramus and this year’s project. Q. What is going on in the studio and how is Joshua Prince-Ramus involved? A. Jarosz: We wanted to choose a Marcus Award winner who would not hesitate at the idea of working with an existing building or structure. We wanted someone who felt that adaptive reuse of midcentury modern buildings can form an important part of an architect’s portfolio of work and can also play an important part of educating architects. In the last century, the norm was to take buildings away and start over. Now we are saying that sustainability and sensitivity to the environment are not just a passing fad. People like old buildings that offer a sense of history and texture. Q. Why choose the post office? A. Jarosz: Joshua asked to work on an iconic Milwaukee building that was not much loved. The old post office couldn’t have been a better candidate. It’s enormous. The students had the opportunity to dig into the history of the place and why it looks the way it does. Another happy occurrence was that Kendall Breunig offered us first-floor space at the Pritzlaff Building (near the post office), a convenient location for scouting the site and for enhancing our interaction with professionals. Q. How does the size of the building affect plans? A. Jarosz: In some ways its bigness has been the problem. Developers wanted to buy it 20 or 30 years

ago and demolish it, but it can’t be demolished because of subsoil problems and other issues. Now we have a developer out of Chicago (R2 Companies and Poskly Holdings, which bought the building in October 2015), and they are definitely going down the path of adaptive re-use. Q. Will the ideas that the students come up with in the design studio actually happen? The developer and the city have mentioned in the media what they are thinking about. A. Jarosz: We’ve been communicating with the current owners and they obviously have an interest in what we’re doing. They have not sponsored the studio in any way, but they’ve been generous in letting us use it as a study model and wander around inside. They’re planning to come in May to see our presentation. Snyder: While it’s speculative, it’s really the intention of the studio to present an entirely plausible scenario. Look at all the other studies the school has done through Community Design Solutions and on the rapid transit connection (a bus route bePart of the prize, which is tween downtown Milwaukee and the Milwaufunded by the Marcus Corp., kee Regional Medical Center). The studio is tryprovides an architectural design ing to be a leader in the community in exploring studio involving the architect, the idea of adaptive reuse of historic buildings. How are Prince-Ramus and the stuPrince-Ramus project. dents reimagining the building? A. Snyder: One of the things Prince-Ramus is really interested in is having a complete and total understanding of the client’s functional program and using that to integrate the organization of the building’s internal spaces, and in turn, to motivate design invention. He has challenged the students to design a “Strategostructure.” The idea is to make a civic cultural center out of the post office – one that includes a performance theater, museum, library and multiplex, all sharing the newly adapted armature of the existing building. It can easily become an iconic, mixed-use destination at the heart of the city. Jarosz: Rather than being a passive receiver of urban decisions from developers, architects need to get ahead of the discussion so we can end up with places and spaces that are more meaningful. That’s at the heart of this studio. The students are having a fabulous experience. Joshua has been generous with his time. It’s just been a great opportunity for them. Uwm.edu.news

Taking The High Road Can Be Hard … BUT IT’S WORTH IT Many people have been in relationships that seem impossible. They feel trapped and vulnerable. Whether it be financial dependence, kids or a host of other reasons, they feel that divorcing themselves from this situation in a way that doesn’t leave them broken, living in a box under a bridge is simply a dream. Most of the time it is the person’s bad choices that got them in to this predicament so they feel even more despondent. Add to this a partner who is vindictively trying to make their life a living hell and they have a recipe for depression, anger, suicide and a bevy of other states of mind that aren’t the healthiest. There are several ways a person can react to this unbearable situation. The first, and most childish, way to react is retaliation. As a Chinese philosopher once said, “Man who seek revenge better dig two graves.” Retaliation has so many downsides that they are too numerous to mention. MILWAUKEE NAMES Lavall Jordan MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH Former Butler University student-athlete and assistant coach LaVall Jordan, who has spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan, has been named Milwaukee’s men’s basketball coach. Jordan, a native of Albion, Michigan, who is regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the country, helped the Wolverines to five NCAA Tournament berths, including a national runner-up finish in 2013, during his tenure at Michigan. “I am thrilled to welcome LaVall, his wife, Destinee, and their children to the Milwaukee family,” Milwaukee Director of Athletics Amanda Braun said. “LaVall has impeccable character and integrity and he has been a winner both as a player and as a coach. Widely regarded as an excellent recruiter, LaVall also has a proven track record in player development. This is an exciting day for Milwaukee basketball.” 16654In six seasons at Michigan, Jordan has worked under head coach John Beilein, who is regarded as one of the brightest and most innovative minds in the game. With Jordan on staff, the Wolverines compiled a 143-70 (.671) record and won at least one NCAA Tournament game four times in six seasons. In 2012-13, Jordan helped the program to a 31-8 overall record and a NCAA Runner-Up finish and one year later, Michigan compiled a 28-9 ledger and reached the NCAA Elite Eight. A former guard himself at Butler, Jordan’s tutelage helped develop Trey Burke into a 2013 NBA Draft pick and the Consensus National Player of the Year and a Consensus All-American. “I would like to thank Amanda Braun and Chancellor Mone for giving me the opportunity to serve as the head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,” Jordan said. “I am extremely excited about the potential for this program. There is a proud tradition of success at Milwaukee and our goal is to consistently compete for championships in the Horizon League. I cannot wait to get started.” Before his tenure at Michigan, Jordan spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa and four seasons, including three as an assistant coach, at his alma mater, Butler. He helped the Bulldogs to a 29-7 record in 2006-07 and the team reached the NCAA Sweet 16 that season before falling to eventual national champion, Florida. Jordan’s coaching pedigree is impressive to say the least. He played under current Butler Director of Athletics Barry Collier and current Ohio State head coach Thad Matta, Todd Lickliter, and at Butler also worked alongside current Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens. Prior to embarking on his coaching career Jordan starred at Butler from 19982001, helping the Bulldogs to three conference tournament titles and a pair of Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular-season crowns. He participated in four consecutive postseason tournaments and with a 79-63 victory over Wake Forest in 2001, helped Butler to its first NCAA tournament victory in 39 years. A two-time All-MCC performer, Jordan was named the league’s tournament MVP in 2001. He helped Butler to 91 victories in four years and graduated as the winningest player in program history. A 2001 graduate of Butler, Jordan played professional basketball in Europe and in the National Basketball Developmental League before beginning his coaching career. What Theyre Saying About LaVall Jordan 16655”Milwaukee has made a fabulous hire. I knew within the first few months of coaching with Val that he is a rising star and would make an outstanding coach one day. He will have a terrific impact on the Milwaukee program immediately as well as in the future. We will miss Val, Destinee and their family, but we will also be rooting for them and the Panthers every step of the way.” –John Beilein, Head Men’s Basketball Coach, University of Michigan “Milwaukee hit a home run in LaVall Jordan. I’ve always counted myself blessed to have worked with LaVall at Butler. He has a great feel for the game, has outstandcoach>>page 16

Laurie CONTINUES PROFESSIONAL Bell CAREER IN SWEDEN Former Panther All-American Laurie Bell has taken his soccer talents back overseas, signing a professional contract last week with Karlslunds IFHFK, a team that competes in the Swedish Second Division. “The chance to play in Sweden came out of nowhere and it’s all happened very quickly. I grew up with ambitions to play in Europe, so when I got the offer from Karlslunds I said yes, hopped on a plane and so far everything has been brilliant,” Bell said, after playing all 90 minutes in his first game with the new team. Bell signed a one year contract with the club after spending some time at home in England awaiting new professional opportunities and playing for the semi-pro side Hyde United. His new club is based in the city of Örebro in central Sweden. “It’s a great club with some old traditions, including crazy locker room celebrations, which I experienced after our win on the weekend,” Bell said. “And Örebro is a beautiful new city to live in and explore. Some of my happiest footballing years have been in America though. Milwaukee still feels like a second home and a truly special college experience at UWM put me on a path to my first professional season with the Tulsa Roughnecks. So I will always keep one eye open for future footballing opportunities in the States too!” Bell was a First-Team All-American at Milwaukee as a junior and was named a Senior CLASS Award Second-Team All-American in 2014 in addition to being named an Academic All-American for the second year in a row. The 2013 Horizon League Player of the Year and First-Team All-American overcame a slow start following an injury to still be recognized by the Horizon League coaches in 2014, becoming just the third UWM men’s soccer player to earn all-league first-team honors three times in a career. He began his professional career in March of 2015, signing with the Tulsa Roughnecks of the USL, making six starts in 22 games played on the season. mkepanthers.com coach<<page 15

ing relationships with his players and co-workers and understands the importance of the basketball program representing its school well, on and off, the court.” – Brad Stevens, Head Coach, Boston Celtics “LaVall Jordan is a rising star in coaching. He is a terrific teacher, an expert recruiter, and an excellent tactician. LaVall learned it and lived it the Butler Way and was an integral part of Michigan’s success. He is a class individual in every respect. Milwaukee has a great one in LaVall Jordan.” – Jay Bilas, ESPN Analyst “Coach LaVall had a big influence on me and was a big part of my growth when I first got to Michigan. He played a major role in helping me get to where I am today. He allowed me to see the floor at a higher level. He is one of the best coaches I have ever had an opportunity to play for as far as the insight he gave me and allowed my game to grow. It’s great to see a person like Coach Val get an opportunity like this. I am sure he will make the most of it. I am so happy for him. God is good and it’s great to see what he’s doing in Coach Val’s life. He’s a great leader and they are getting a great guy.” – Trey Burke, former University of Michigan guard and current Utah Jazz guard “Coach Val was one of my favorite coaches I’ve ever played for. His knowledge of the game is very high and he has an unbelievable ability to teach. As far as skill development goes, I’ve never had a coach who was able to teach me things offensively and defensively with the detail he used. I’m so happy for Coach and his family because I know he is very deserving of a head coaching job. Milwaukee is getting a great coach, but an even better person. I’m confident he will have great success with his new team!” – Nik Stauskas, former University of Michigan guard and current Philadelphia 76ers guard. mkepanthers.com 16 the PANTHER xpress May 2016
