ENTERTAINMENT Edo, aged 31, who lives in Cascina, Italy, has been part of the Brit Floyd family for some time, playing in our sister project “The Classic Rock Show” for the past few years. His playing is Gilmour through and through and we cant wait for you all to hear him. www.britfloyd.com

Space and Time CONTINUUM World Tour 2016

Brit Floyd is coming to Madison

With a spectacular new million dollar light show and state of the art video design… and an even bigger stage production, Brit Floyd – Space & Time – Continuum promises to be the most ambitious and best Brit Floyd show yet. Following it’s hugely successful 146 concert date tour across the globe in 2015, Brit Floyd, The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show, returns to North America in 2016 to continue it’s exploration through fifty years of Pink Floyd, and the vast and incredible catalogue of music. As well as performing the favourite moments from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Division Bell, Brit Floyd will treat the audience to their show-stopping rendition of Echoes, in its entirety, from the landmark album Meddle, as well as a host of other Pink Floyd musical gems. Brit Floyd show was modeled after Pink Floyd’s light show and they did not disappoint. The 30-foot round video screen was filled with retro animated graphics, short films and pictures that represent each year the songs were released. Amazing guitar, thundering drums, stunning backup vocals, spot-on keyboards and sound effects would generally be all one could ask for in a live show - Brit Floyd brings it all. The light show was spectacular. Lights beaming from the floor, ceiling and all around the stage. Lasers and smoke added to the real Floyd feeling.Vivid and bright. The music did strike a powerful chord in the audience and the vocals and background singers were nothing less than spot on. The whole show was masterfully scripted and executed in a sold out venue. The three-hour show was an amazing combination of Pink Floyd’s entire career from 1967 to 1994. They played the true Floyd favorites and added a few of the lesser known songs. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd or love an over the top show, you will not be dissapointed Following its hugely successful 146 concert date tour around the globe in 2015, Brit Floyd, The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show, returns to North America in 2016 to continue its amazing journey through fifty years of Pink Floyd, and the vast and incredible catalogue of music they have given us. As well as performing the favourite moments from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Division Bell... Brit Floyd will treat audiences to its show-stopping rendition of Echoes, in its entirety, from the landmark album Meddle, as well as a host of other Pink Floyd musical gems. Brit Floyd lead vocalist, guitarist & musical director, Damian Darlington, said, “The audience reaction to the Space and Time show in 2015 was so positive that we’ve decided to continue that theme in 2016 with Space and Time CONTINUUM, and we aim to deliver an even stronger performance for everyone. There is so much quality material to choose from across the Pink Floyd repertoire, and we will definitely be trying a few different songs this time around as well as including all the favourites.” With a spectacular new million dollar light show and state of the art video design... and an even bigger stage production, Brit Floyd - Space and Time CONTINUUM promises to be the most ambitious and best Brit Floyd show yet. We are very excited to announce the addition of Italian born guitarist and vocalist Edo Scordo.

Her expedition also takes her to the sublime rendezvous of Masters that represent the musical Cuban tradition, and who have been devoted ambassadors of this beautiful music for the last 50 years: Los Fakires. The singer from Ibiza(Spain) brings together the fakirian veterans with young talent from the same Carribean island: Maikel Elizarde, cuban tres player [guitar-like three-course chordophone], who can be seen on stage with singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. About Paige Alms Paige Alms grew up on the island of Maui, where the spirit of Aloha was planted in her heart. The water quickly became a part of her everyday life, taking up the sport of surfing at age nine. With Paige’s fearlessness and perseverance, along with one of the world’s best big-wave surf spots in her backyard, it was inevitable that she’d begin to conquer these monsters. Today, at age 27, Paige has become Maui’s big-wave ambassador, living her humble life dedicated to her passion. In 2015, Paige became the first woman to get barreled at Jaws for which she won the Women’s Overall Performance honor at the WSL Big Wave Awards and an ESPY nomination. Alongside her incredible accomplishments, Paige leads her life with a shining heart, smile, and spirit, one we were grateful for the opportunity to document. About Devyn Bisson Devyn Bisson is an international award-winning documentary filmmaker, and the chief storyteller at Hues of Blue Stories. Her debut feature film, The Wave I Ride explores the raw human experience, igniting audience members to look within their own story. Diving deeper is a theme of Bisson’s artistic expression she believes her lifeguarding career brought into her craft. Female surfers have been fighting an uphill battle for decades seeking equality in the male-dominated sport of surfing. Recent years have seen progress, but there’s still a long way to go. Women in big wave surfing have an even longer path to pave. Up until this year, there had yet to be any contest specifically for women or even that would allow women into the event to compete against the men. The World Surf League (WSL) has just announced that at long last, they have added a women’s event to the 2016-17 season, and surfers like big wave charger Paige Alms, recently documented in The Wave I Ride out on demand on April 29th, could not be happier. “I am so excited to hear the news of the first real big wave women’s event being planned for next season,” said Alms. “I am ecstatic that the WSL is backing us and that Jaws and Todos are both options for the event! The prize purse is just a bonus!” “Over my years of surfing I’ve seen many women charge big waves, but the level in which this has been achieved these last few years is unprecedented,” said Peter Mel, WSL BWT Commissioner. “We are happy to give women the platform to compete and witness their contribution to the sport of big wave surfing.” “The inclusion of a Women’s Championship was always a part of the master plan for the sport of Big Wave Surfing,” said Gary Linden, Founder and Vice President of the BWT. “Now that this first step has come to fruition, future growth seems only natural.” Alms, easily considered in the top echelon of female big wave surfers in the world has been pioneering the sport for women for several years. Her efforts came to a pinnacle in the 2015 season when she became the first woman to get barreled at Peahi (aka Jaws), her home break in Maui. Riding that wave, considered one of the biggest and most intimidating waves in the world, earned her accolades and attention the world over. It also earned her a WSL Big Wave Award and an ESPY nomination. She’s been nominated for a 2016 WSL Big Wave Award, which will be announced at the awards ceremony this weekend. All of this success hasn’t been easy and she’s fought an uphill battle to follow her passion. The inequality in surfing in general, and big wave surfing more specifically, is vast between men and women: everything from sponsorships to prize money to the sexualization of female surfers.

You Can Learn From Introverts

Extroverts seem to dominate the world -- in business, in politics, in media. They’re recognized in the classroom, rewarded in the office and appreciated at parties. But don’t make the mistake of dismissing introverts as irrelevant. In their quiet and thoughtful way, they have a lot to teach us. Introverts often get a bad rap because of people’s failure to fully understand the definition, says Farrah Parker, owner and executive coach at FD Parker and Associates. Being an introvert doesn’t mean you don’t like people or that you’re shy. “It simply means that the way you refuel and unwind often involves peace and solitude,” Parker says. There are a number of benefits to this introspective life approach, so read on to find out what you can learn from introverts. By Lynette Arceneaux 1. Learn to Spend Time With Yourself Perhaps the most important thing introverts can teach us is how to be alone with yourself, says Tina B. Tessina, psychotherapist and author of “It Ends With You: Grow Up and Out of Dysfunction.” Being alone doesn’t make an introvert feel lonely, and they often have a rich inner life and satisfying hobbies. “We can all benefit from less outer focus and more inner awareness,” Tessina says. And being an introvert can often lead to greater self-knowledge, adds Taliba M. Foster, board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist in her Philadelphia private practice. “Introverts are deliberate people,” she says. “They are often readers and thinkers. They are often those whose health decisions, for example, are most likely formed by extensive research -- or even studying medical journals -- as opposed to chatting with a fellow subway commuter for health advice,” Foster says. . Relish Independent Activity Because they enjoy being alone, introverts tend to excel at work or activities that entail independence or solitude. “Artists, writers, composers and inventors are often introverted,” says Jeremy Schwartz, a psychotherapist in Brooklyn, New York. Jobs that require a great deal of independent work are where many introverts succeed. “They’re likely to be described as self-starters who take initiative with minimal direction needed,” Schwartz says. “They thrive in places where they can engage in indepth, reflective work. Introverts are great at avoiding distractions and focusing on what matters to them.” This trait can be practical for certain types of fitness pursuits as well, adds psychiatrist Taliba M. Foster. “For instance, long-distance running is quite isolating and requires focus and discipline.” 3. Look Inward for Inspiration Most introverts enjoy exploring their thoughts and feelings, says Simon Rego, director of psychology training at New York’s Montefiore Medical Center. “This can lead to being highly creative when it comes to problem-solving.” While extroverts may seem to snatch up more recognition in the corporate world, introverts should trust the way they naturally process information. If they feel the need to spend time

alone, reflecting on ideas, they should do so. In fact, Rego says, introverts might consider creating opportunities to maximize this skill during the workday, such as planning the occasional break to recharge on their own, volunteering for tasks or projects that involve fewer team members or asking for one-on-one meetings with key players. 4. Practice Effective Listening Skills “Introverts are good listeners,” says psychotherapist Tina B. Tessina. “They may not be facile talkers, but introverted people usually know how to really listen.” And it’s this skill that research has shown can make introverts better leaders than extroverts, especially when their employees are naturally proactive. An extroverted leader of a team of extroverts can get so caught up in expressing his own thoughts that he fails to listen to or act on the ideas his team is proposing. An introverted leader, however, is more likely to listen to and process the ideas of his extroverted team. The listening skills of introverts can be advantageous in their personal lives as well. Introverts, says psychologist Simon Rego, “can be very effective listeners -- particularly in one-on-one situations with their partner, which can enhance emotional intimacy and connectedness.” . Form Deeper Connections “While introverts do not enjoy large social situations,” says Jene Kapela, principal and founder of Jene Kapela Leadership Solutions, “they do enjoy smaller gatherings of close friends and tend to develop deep and meaningful relationships with others.” Psychologist Simon Rego points out that, “Most introverts can recognize this quality in themselves and set up social events that meet this need.” An introvert might, for example, plan a small-scale dinner party or arrange more one-on-one engagements rather than large group events. These smaller gatherings can allow for longer, more meaningful conversations, leading to deeper connections and greater understanding of others. 6. Appreciate Seclusion “Introverts have no problem pushing through tough deadlines that require complete isolation to achieve results,” says executive coach Farrah Parker. “They will stay in the house for an entire weekend if it means meeting a goal and succeeding.” Unlike the gregarious extroverts, when introverts are sequestered for an extended period of time working on a project, they will “rarely feel as though the world has left them behind simply because they are not literally outside and engaged,” Parker says. Leadership coach Jene Kapela agrees. “Introverts enjoy working alone and are quite comfortable and happy in a solitary working environment,” she says. As a result, they tend to have an advantage focusing their attention on one thing for an extended period of time without getting distracted, she says. 7. Take Time in New Situations Many of us could learn from an introvert’s tendency to take his time in new circumstances. Introverts don’t immediately jump into the deep end of the pool when faced with a new situation, says psychotherapist Tina B. Tessina. “They go very slowly and size up the state of affairs before making any moves.” Introverts will often wait until they’re approached rather than approaching new people. This means, Tessina says, they usually don’t end up making a social faux pas as a result of not understanding the milieu. On the contrary, introverts wait and consider their options, resulting in a more appropriate course of action than if they had leapt into the fray with less forethought. “Introverts tend to think more before acting or speaking,” says psychotherapist Jeremy Schwartz. “Extroverts, on the other hand, are more likely to talk and act as they are thinking.” 8. Circumvent the Inessentials Introverts are more likely to remain unaffected by innuendo, gossip and social angst borne of relationships -- romantic or otherwise -- at work, says psychiatrist Taliba M. Foster. “The introvert isn’t necessarily taking long lunches with co-workers, stepping outside for ‘join-me’ smoking breaks or engaging in the extended personal telephone conversations that cost employers billions in man-hours.” For these reasons, she says, introverts may be seen in a positive light by managers and employers. “Introverts may be viewed as dependable professionals who are too focused on their responsibilities to participate in petty office interplay or social agendas created by co-workers,” Foster says. “Managers may see the introvert as trustworthy and more likely to abide by workplace protocols (such as confidentiality) than an extrovert or office socialite.” 9. Powerful Communication Introverts are often very powerful in their verbal communication because they tend to avoid conversation that’s not applicable to the experience or situation, as psychiatrist Taliba M. Foster learned firsthand. “Early in my career I was concerned that I would struggle with introverted patients,” she says. “I thought, ‘What will I do with a clinical hour full of silence? Will we have a staring contest? Will I spend more time talking than my patient?’ I learned quickly, to my delight, that I would just listen.” This talent of focusing on the subject at hand and being concise often helps her introverted patients arrive at personal resolutions quicker than extroverts, she says. “Extroverts tend to talk about everything with a grandiose and avoidant flair, while the introvert is less likely to waste time.” This piece originally appeared in Livestrong.com. Inside Music Hall, with an audience full of parents, grandparents, family friends and teachers, hands clapped, heads bobbed and fingers snapped in time to the tempos. Paired with Sheppard on one tune, West High jazz guitarist Xavier Lynn was clearly exulting, head swinging to the beat, knees bobbing up and down. On “You Tell Me,” a Jim McNeely tune, Chance Stine, a sophomore saxophonist in the UW Jazz Orchestra, played a “dueling duet” with Sheppard. He, too, was grinning. What better example of the Wisconsin Idea, Wallmann says. “It’s our version of research: serving the community, creating art and wonderful performances, and involving the public and students beyond campus,” he says. RESEARCHERS TRACK CRITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE YOUNG BRAIN By Adityarup “Rup” Chakravorty Much like electricity traveling down wires, nerve impulses in our brain travel along nerve fibers. And just as wires need insulation to function well, nerve fibers, too, rely on a kind of insulation called myelin, a fatty substance that protects them and increases the speed at which nerve impulses travel. At birth, the human brain contains very little myelin but it increases quickly throughout childhood. Many researchers think our ability to learn quickly and process large amounts of information as children is directly related to the rapid myelination of our nerve fibers, yet scientists don’t fully understand this process. A recent study led by Doug Dean III of the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin—Madison and published in the journal NeuroImage combined two related but different imaging techniques to non-invasively track the rate at which nerve fibers in children’s brains become wrapped in myelin. “Having a non-invasive way to quantitatively map the thickness of myelin sheaths around nerve fibers will help us learn more about how the brain develops and when new nerve connections are made,” says Dean. It could also lead to new findings about diseases like multiple sclerosis and leukodystrophies, in which the myelin sheath is damaged. Additionally, Dean says, there are several neurodevelopmental disorders with no known causes and “understanding how myelination proceeds in typically developing brains could tell us if these disorders are linked to defects in myelination.” BRAIN>>page 13

Badgering:

Did you eat massive amounts of food on the road? I was eating basically everything and anything that was put in front of me. I was probably close to 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day. My hosts would fix dinner for me, and that would usually consist of a few platefuls of food. I’ve definitely had to cut back quite a bit since coming home. I lost about 40 to 45 pounds on the trip. In addition to raising the money, what was the best outcome from the trip? Getting people to sign up to be mentors [for Big Brothers Big Sisters], because a lot of times, there are kids on a wait list to find mentors, and that’s kind of devastating. It was a great opportunity to spread the message that people can make a difference. I’ve had a few hundred reach out to me and tell me that they’ve signed up. Watching the baseball games was also a lot of fun — it was just really a great opportunity to not only experience baseball but to experience different cultures around the country. In general, the thicker the myelin sheath, the quicker the speed of nerve impulses along that nerve fiber. To noninvasively measure the thickness of the myelin sheaths, Dean and his colleagues enhanced and combined two existing techniques that are variations of magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. MRI has a wide range of medical applications and is often used to image the brain, other organs, and joints and soft tissue. MRI is also the basis of several imaging techniques. One of the MRI-based techniques used by Dean, called DTI, provides highly detailed images of nerve fibers and other structures in the brain. But these images aren’t very helpful for researchers who are trying to determine the thickness of myelin fibers. Another MRI-based imaging technique, called mcDESPOT, can help researchers estimate how much myelin there is in specific areas of the brain but doesn’t provide a clear picture of other BRAIN>>page 14

In 2015, Matt Stoltz ’14 biked to all the US Major League Baseball parks to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters and its affiliated program, Biking for Baseball, which runs baseball clinics for children. In six months, he rode his Novara Randonee — without a support vehicle — for 11,750 miles, visited 30 baseball stadiums, and pedaled 2.3 million strokes, raising more than $26,000. Stoltz, who was a Big Brother mentor throughout his high school years, now works as a case manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. Matt Stoltz Biking for BaseballWere you a Big Brother yourself? Yes, I was. In high school I would go every week after school for about a half hour to help [my Little Brother] with his homework or whatever, and it was really remarkable to see the changes that took place in him. He was more attentive, more engaged in class, and doing better in school. So it was cool to see that impact — I was kind of astounded at how little it took. What was your favorite experience on the trip? Meeting so many great people from every corner of the country. I would stay with strangers. People would buy me meals, buy me tickets to the game, and offer me hospitality. When you’re traveling by yourself, that’s really how you get by — that friendliness and generosity went a long way. A lot of the time I did what I call stealth camping. I’d just pitch a tent [under some trees] on the side of the road. What was the biggest challenge you experienced? You get lonely on the open road, spending ten or twelve hours on a bike. You definitely have those moments of self-doubt. There’s no way that you can call six months on a bike easy, so you know you’re going to have those tough days. But you’re also going to have really good days when the ride’s going pretty easily, there are gorgeous views, and it’s a lot of fun. So you use those to motivate yourself and keep on pedaling. Did you have any major bike breakdowns? I had about 30 flat tires, but most of those I could fix and be back on the road within 15 minutes. I had a broken derailleur, which kind of set me back a bit. I was stranded in the middle of nowhere [southern Illinois near the Kentucky border], but someone I had stayed with the night before was able to help out. I called them and they had a spare derailleur that fit my bike. I was very lucky.

UW FIFNISHES TOP SEVEN IN NATIONAL ATTENDANCE FOR 16TH-STRAIGHT YEAR Wisconsin fans continue to prove that they are among the most passionate fanbases in the country. That was evident yet again in 2015-16 by the fact that the Wisconsin men’s basketball team ranked sixth in the country and second in the Big Ten Conference in home attendance this season according to figures released by the NCAA. The Badgers averaged a capacity 17,287 fans per home game and saw a total of 311,166 people enter through the turnstiles at the Kohl Center in 2015-16. Not only did UW record the best average attendance in program history, but UW’s total attendance also ranked as the second-highest tally in program history behind only the 326,610 home attendance in 2006-07. Wisconsin has now finished in the top seven for national attendance in each of the past 16 seasons. This year, the Badgers trailed only Kentucky, Syracuse, Louisville, North Carolina and Maryland in average attendance. UW ranked fourth overall in total attendance. The Badgers were one of only seven teams in the country to average over 17,000 fans at each home game. Despite having the fourth-largest building in the conference, Wisconsin has ranked among the top two in attendance in the Big Ten for 14 consecutive seasons. UW has led the league 10 of the last 14 years. www.uwbadgers.com

structures that may also be present in those areas. While each imaging technique provides valuable information, by themselves they paint only a hazy portrait of myelin thickness. By combining these two methods, Dean and his study colleagues were able to not only image nerve fibers and other structures in the brain, they could also calculate the size of these nerve fibers and the amount of myelin surrounding them. The Truth “SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DEAL WITH THE TRUTH” -DR. PHIL

To successful people, the truth is neither good or bad. For them, there is very little fear in looking at things in a simple, straight forward, truthful manner.

good or bad, about how they are perceived by others because it helps to complete a picture of their standing in the world. They have no concern of the positive or negative comments but only about the quality and sincerity of the person making the commentary. The truth is a helpful tool that helps them improve and move on. It is not something to be feared but something to learn from. It cannot be stated enough that truly successful people do not look at the truth in a positive or negative light. It serves only to help in decision making and to get an outside snapshot of themselves so they can modify the way in which they deal with the outside world. Unfortunately, most people live in denial. They do not want to face the truth because it somehow makes them feel inadequate and like a failure. As a person climbs the ladder of life they find the biggest difference between people at the bottom and top is the truth. People at the bottom are constantly defending the indefensible and wasting time promoting positions that they themselves really don’t believe. They are so concerned about how the truth makes them look that they are willing to hold themselves back to defend these positions. This seemingly ridiculous behavior is present in all of us but gradually minimized by the more successful. As the success ladder is being climbed, it becomes more and more truthful. Successful people quickly tire of those who live in a “pie in the sky” reality. They get left behind in favor of those with practical and useful visions. The non-truthers are bogged down to such a degree that they have a very small chance of ever becoming successful. Defending the indefensible and promoting the idiotic positions becomes a part of their life strategy and is dragged around like an old ball and chain. It literally takes away any chance of success. Dealing with the truth is a large in factor in the someone’s success. It is usually fairly obvious why some people succeed and others fail. It generally doesn’t come down to luck or circumstance (although these factors can certainly make the climb much harder). It could be as simple as good parenting. Who knows what makes some people readily deal with truth while others live in a constant state of denial. Dealing with truth makes life so much easier, simpler and happier. It has that effect on others as well.

B.D. Louis No matter what you think about Dr. P, this is right on. Although his brand of pop psychology can be trivial and over simplified, he hit the nail on the proverbial head with this one. Whoever he stole this line from should be revered as saying something that is in the same league with the theory of relativity and the serenity prayer. Defining success is fairly relative. A generally successful person is comfortable in their own skin and lot in life. Financial achievement is a part of it as well, as contentedness and garnering a positive feeling from those around them. It is a simplistic summation, but good enough for this discussion. Most importantly, successful people are generally more interesting which, in turn, is a big factor in their success. The reason for this is they are not bound to the same pool of small minded topics that are intellectually unstimulating and, for the most part, boring. Talk of the children, office politics and other mundane subjects are done as a social nicety but their real interest lies in the core reality of what makes us tick. This is why someone such as Oprah is so popular and successful. They are also interested in others which is surprisingly rare. Most people have no interest in anyone else’s life and this selfishness is usually translated into failure. They would be surprised to learn that having a genuine interest in other people would make them more successful. Successful people are willing to discuss subjects that may not cast them in the best light but could bring about a robust, interesting conversation. They do not perpetrate the same monotonous discussion about how water is not wet, how their kid who is in jail is really misunderstood or how cheating on their spouse is justifiable. They know this inane banter is a waste of an intelligent mind and discussing such nonsense is unexciting and generally a waste of time. Also, they know that taking such moronic positions will jeopardize people’s trust in their mental capabilities in the future. To successful people, the truth is neither good or bad. For them, there is very little fear in looking at things in a simple, straight forward, truthful manner. Truth is seldom ugly or unpleasant because it is what it is. To a successful person, dealing in fairy tales is simply bad time management and generally a waste of time. A very successful person does not care how the truth reflects on them. It is simply easier and more efficient to deal in what is as compared to what they would like to believe. Obviously, truth is relative and in the eye of the beholder but successful people do not deny their own truth. They’ve come to grips with their humanness and realize that they are fallible, paradoxical, contradictory and every other negative term that anyone wants to throw at them. They realize they have the same shortcomings everyone else has by the very nature of their standing as an imperfect human being. Because of this, they seem almost impervious to criticism and welcome feedback, SUMMER 016 the RED xpress 1

Many people have been in relationships that seem impossible. They feel trapped and vulnerable. Whether it be financial dependence, kids or a host of other reasons, they feel that divorcing themselves from this situation in a way that doesn’t leave them broken, living in a box under a bridge is simply a dream. Most of the time it is the person’s bad choices that got them in to this predicament so they feel even more despondent. Add to this a partner who is vindictively trying to make their life a living hell and they have a recipe for depression, anger, suicide and a bevy of other states of mind that aren’t the healthiest. There are several ways a person can react to this unbearable situation. The first, and most childish, way to react is retaliation.
