Editor’s Note Winter is just around the corner and we all need to alter our health regimens accordingly. It can be so easy to stay in and rent a movie, over indulge in heavy, high calorie foods (Thanksgiving) or exercise less. You can always make healthier, hearty foods (lots of cook books at the library or recipes on the Internet) and maybe you should try a new exercise regimen to keep you stimulated instead of the same old routine. Sometimes trying something new is exciting and I think that’s a good thing to do when it’s cold and dreary outside.

For our Senior readers we have articles on Alzheimer Disease and Hospice care. After all November is the month that these topics are nationally recognized as well as our healthy aging topics throughout the paper.

Also, we are keeping up on our Complementary and Alternative medicine articles which you will be seeing a bigger section each month.

The holidays are sure to keep us all busy. Organizing, attending, participating in everything can make one a bit weary. If you get stressed over all the activity be prepared to set aside time to relax and take care of yourself.. What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia (in-SOM-ne-ah) is a common sleep disorder. People who have insomnia have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. As a result, they may get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. They may not feel refreshed when they wake up.

Overview Insomnia can be acute (short-term) or chronic (ongoing). Acute insomnia is common and often is brought on by situations such as stress at work, family pressures, or a traumatic event. Acute insomnia lasts for days or weeks.

Chronic insomnia lasts for a month or longer. Most cases of chronic insomnia are secondary, which means they are the symptom or side effect of some other problem.

Certain medical conditions, medicines, sleep disorders, and substances can cause secondary insomnia.

In contrast, primary insomnia isn’t due to medical problems, medicines, or other substances. It is its own distinct disorder, and its cause isn’t well understood. Many life changes can trigger primary insomnia, including long-lasting stress and emotional upset.

Insomnia can cause daytime sleepiness and a lack of energy. It also can make you feel anxious, depressed, or irritable. You may have trouble focusing on tasks, paying attention, learning, and remembering. These problems can prevent you from doing your best at work or school.

Insomnia also can cause other serious problems. For example, you may feel drowsy while driving, which could lead to an accident.

Outlook Treating the underlying cause of secondary insomnia may resolve or improve the sleep problem, especially if you can correct the problem soon after it starts. For example, if caffeine is causing your insomnia, stopping or limiting your intake of the substance might make the insomnia go away.

Lifestyle changes, including better sleep habits, often help relieve acute insomnia.

For chronic insomnia, your doctor may recommend medicines or cognitive-behavioral therapy.

During National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month (November 2013), it is great to see everyone talking about ways to support families with Alzheimer’s. SAD affects many people in northern latitudes in winter

Most Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) symptoms stem from daily body rhythms that have gone out-of-sync with the sun, a NIMH-funded study has found.

The researchers propose that most patients will respond best to a low dose of the light-sensitive hormone melatonin in the afternoon in addition to bright light in the morning. Rhythms that have lost their bearings due to winter’s late dawn and early dusk accounted for 65 percent of SAD symptoms; re-aligning them explained 35 percent of melatonin’s antidepressant effect in patients with delayed rhythms, the most common form of SAD, report NIMH grantee Alfred Lewy, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues at the Oregon Health & Science University, online, April 28, 2006, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

SAD affects many people in northern latitudes in winter, especially young women, and is usually treated with bright light in the morning. The pineal gland, located in the middle of the brain, responds to darkness by secreting melatonin, which re-sets the brain’s central clock and helps the light/dark cycle re-set the sleep/wake cycle and other daily rhythms. Lewy and colleagues pinpointed how rhythms go astray in SAD and how they can be re-set by taking melatonin supplements at the right time of day. The findings strengthen the case for daily rhythm mismatches as the cause of SAD. The researchers tracked sleep, activity levels, melatonin rhythms and depression symptoms of 68 SAD patients who took either low doses of melatonin or a placebo in the morning or afternoon for a winter month when they were most symptomatic.

They had determined from healthy subjects that a person’s rhythms are synchronized when the interval between the time the pineal gland begins secreting melatonin and the middle of sleep is about 6 hours.

Seventy-one percent of the SAD patients had intervals shorter than 6 hours, indicating that their rhythms were delayed due to the later winter dawn. Taking melatonin capsules in the afternoon lengthened their intervals, bringing their rhythms back toward normal. The closer their intervals approached the ideal 6 hours, the more their mood improved on depression rating scales, supporting the hypothesized link between out-of-sync rhythms and SAD. “SAD may be the first psychiatric disorder in which a physiological marker correlates with symptom severity before, and in the course of, treatment in the same patients,” explained Lewy, referring to patients’ rhythm shifts towards the 6 hour interval in response to melatonin.

Taking melatonin at the correct time of day — afternoon for patients with short intervals and morning for the 29 percent of patients with long intervals — more than doubled their improvement in depression scores, compared to taking a placebo or the hormone at the incorrect time. While the study was not designed to test the efficacy of melatonin treatment, the researchers suggest that its clinical benefit “appears to be substantial, although not as robust as light treatment.” They propose that the 6-hour interval index may be useful for analyzing the circadian components of non-seasonal depression and other sleep and psychiatric disorders.

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetes is reaching epidemic levels in the U.S. Chances are you know (or are) one of the 25.8 million Americans with the disease. If so, take note. Diabetes does more than affect blood sugar levels. Without proper precautions, it can rob a person of their sight.

1. How diabetes affects vision With diabetes, high blood sugar levels can weaken blood vessels in the eye, causing them to leak. This causes the retina to swell and form deposits that can lead to vision loss. Blood sugar fluctuations can also promote the growth of new, fragile blood vessels on the retina, which can sometimes leak blood into the vitreous (the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the eyeball). This retinal blood vessel damage, or retinopathy, can blur vision and lead to permanent sight impairment.

“Of the nearly 26 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, up to 45% have some degree of diabetic retinopathy (damage to the sensitive retina in the back of the eye), which can lead to vision loss and blindness,” reports Dr. Mark Freedman, an eye surgeon who has treated thousands of diabetic patients since 1988. “For some people, when a routine vision check-up uncovers signs of retinopathy, it is their first clue that they even have diabetes.”

2. What are the symptoms?

Usually, none. Most people don’t notice a problem until retinopathy is so far advanced that lost vision can’t be restored. That’s why annual dilated eye exams are crucial. You should also call your doctor immediately if you notice vision changes in one or both eyes (not associated with fluctuations in blood sugar), numerous floating spots (like spider webs), or a veil over your vision.

3. How is retinopathy detected?

“It is vital for people with diabetes to understand that significant retinopathy may be present and progressing even if their vision appears to be good. And, because fluctuations in blood sugar levels can temporarily affect vision, it’s sometimes hard to know if a serious eye problem is developing,” says Dr. Brett Rhode, an ophthalmologist who has conducted continuing education programs for area diabetes coordinators. Diabetes-related eye damage can only be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Pupil dilation (enlargement with drops) is necessary to best check the back of the eye for early signs of retinopathy, such as microaneurysms (tiny blister-like outcroppings on retinal blood vessels that can bulge and leak), before noticeable vision loss occurs.

4. Prevention & Treatment “Diabetes-related sight loss is often preventable with yearly exams and early intervention. But all of our expertise, lasers and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for regular eye check-ups,” comments Dr. David Scheidt, optometrist and 18-year member of the Wisconsin Diabetes Advisory Group.

“We have been very pleased with the success of medications that can be painlessly injected directly into the eye to stave off progression of the disease. We typically use Avastin because it is both cost-effective and works to inhibit the growth of the abnormal blood vessels related to diabetic retinopathy,” reports Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye care specialist who treats thousands of patients each year with diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other concerns. Daniel Paskowitz,

MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins, adds, “We have seen some amazing results with Avastin, including not only stabilization of vision, but in some cases, improvement in sight. However, we must evaluate each patient’s response individually to determine if and when (about every 4-12 weeks) they should receive injections.” “Although not all diabetics can have or need it, laser treatment can also be effective in reducing the incidence of severe vision loss, especially if started early enough,” explains Freedman.

5. Who is most at risk?

“Diabetic eye disease can appear as early as a year after the onset of diabetes. All diabetics—type 1 or 2, insulindependent or not—are at risk, which increases with the number of years you are diabetic. For example, patients with diabetes for less than five years have about a 15% incidence of retinopathy. This skyrockets, however, to 80% in people with diabetes for 15+ years,” says Dr. Michael Raciti, an ophthalmologist at Eye Care Specialists. According to U.S. census data, overall, the number of diabetic retinopathy cases jumped 89 percent from 2000 to 2010. “This increase poses a vision-threatening epidemic.

That’s why we can’t stress enough the sight-saving benefits of annual eye exams,” concludes Raciti.

THE GIFT OF OUR WOUNDS

By Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D. A few nights ago, I had a dream that, my children, my exhusband and I were driving down the road in our car (when I was still married to him). My daughter was 12, my son 9 and I felt IT. You know, that feeling when you are a family, when you feel like you belong, when you are connected organically through blood, heart and SOUL; a feeling like no other on earth. We got out of the car and I said to my daughter, “Did you feel it?” She said, “Mom, it’s not going to last.” Then I woke up.

This dream was actually my reality. I did feel this organic connection inside when we were a family. Every now and then, when I’d close my eyes I’d feel IT - that magical sense of belonging, of being woven together like a beautiful tapestry. My soul radiated out to my family with a love so deep, it took my breath away. And she was right, it didn’t last.

Eight years ago in early September, on a beautiful fall day, I discovered that my family had been shattered by adultery. When I discovered this, I fell into a deep hole that seemed like it had no bottom. My heart imploded like a bomb went off inside and vaporized it. Its million fragments scattered into space. All that I held sacred was desecrated and in shambles. Even Ommani was defiled. This was a dirty wound. I feared I would never heal.

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. As we move inward after harvest, we tap into the depths of our inner self. As the days get dark and our journey inward spirals into the all-knowing Yin, we gain wisdom and connection with our roots. We prepare for hibernation, for moving closer to the heart of the Earth Mother, to gain connection and nourishment before renewal in Spring. Fall is a sacred time – a time of transition, when the veil between Heaven and Earth is thin and we can access the Spirit world more freely for guidance.

For me, that fateful day in September marked an initiation into a deeper level of Soul. I fell into an abyss where I crawled around for years, asking questions of myself whose answers I am now living out.

For me, as magical and sacred as Fall is, the transition into it is often difficult.

Memories imprint the heart. In the Fall, I am reminded of the cold, sharp shards of betrayal. They were jagged. They pierced my heart and startled my Soul. My heart heaved and then contracted. I tried hard to keep it open for years for fear that it might close down forever due to this pulsing and throbbing wound. It took courage and grief to keep it open, a grief that was sometimes hard to bear. At times, I felt it would never heal. To my amazement, it grew stronger. It grew ‘proud flesh’ over the portal where betrayal had entered. Sometimes I imagine it heaved deeply, like an exhale, releasing pain and the weight of the wounder’s shadow it could no longer carry.

What I discovered is that staying open heals us even when we feel that it won’t.

The pain of staying open is more intense, but a kind of Medicine flows through an open wound like a salve for the Soul. The heart and Soul engage more deeply through an open wound. The Soul reshapes the heart around it so it can flow through it more freely. The wound marks the Soul and changes it forever. I now feel that my wound is encircled by a ring of light. This was how my Soul chose to shine its brilliance into the world from that day forward.

Our wounds often define us in amazing ways. For example, people with cancer or a significant illness remember the day they were diagnosed. It changes them forever.

The wounding itself initiates. The wounded enter the sacred tribe of Warrior and Mentor. They earn their role on Earth through the pain and Medicine of initiation and then transformation.

and are thankful that many have contributed to this issue. They are keenly aware of health concerns for this region (very important). We stay in touch with them so they can stay in touch with you. Speaking of family, I try to keep mine active throughout these cold months.

My children are taking a Tae Kwon Do class 4 times a week. I encourage you to try to ďŹ nd something to keep your children active and social. Wheather its gymnastics, dance, sport or just running around in circles, staying active keeps the body and mind healthy and developing.

Then there’s variable agni, which creates fleeting appetite and thirst. People with more earth and water elements in their constitution (Kapha-types) will be influenced by their cool and heavier nature. Low agni can burn more steadily if large meals or foods like wheat, dairy, meat, and sweets are avoided. A well-spiced diet of smaller, cooked meals with lighter and drier foods is recommended. They may also benefit from missing a small meal on occasion and forgo snacks if they’re able to avoid temptations.

Additionally, agni behaves differently throughout day. It’s stronger at midday when the sun is high, diminished during sunrise and sunset, and nearly absent at dark. Therefore, its best to eat the majority of your food during the day when agni is strongest and lighten up meals at other times. Prime time for your agni is between ten in the morning to two in the afternoon and the best time for your most substantial meal. Like the term “supper� suggests, the other meals are merely supplemental.

Tai Chi Tai chi, which originated in China as a martial art, is a mindbody practice in complementary and alternative medicine.

Tai chi is sometimes referred to as “moving meditation”—practitioners move their bodies slowly, gently, and with awareness, while breathing deeply. This Backgrounder provides a general overview of tai chi and suggests sources for additional information.

Many people practice tai chi to improve their health and well-being.

Scientific research is under way to learn more about how tai chi may work, its possible effects on health, and chronic diseases and conditions for which it may be helpful.

Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Tai chi developed in ancient China. It started as a martial art and a means of selfdefense. Over time, people began to use it for health purposes as well.

Accounts of the history of tai chi vary. A popular legend credits its origins to Chang San-Feng, a Taoist monk, who developed a set of 13 exercises that imitate the movements of animals. He also emphasized meditation and the concept of internal force (in contrast to the external force emphasized in other martial arts, such as kung fu and tae kwon do).

The term “tai chi” (shortened from “tai chi chuan”) has been translated in various ways, such as “internal martial art” and “supreme ultimate fist.” It is sometimes called “taiji” or “taijiquan.”

Tai chi incorporates the Chinese concepts of yin and yang (opposing forces within the body) and qi (a vital energy or life force). Practicing tai chi is said to support a healthy balance of yin and yang, thereby aiding the flow of qi.

People practice tai chi by themselves or in groups. In the Chinese community, people commonly practice tai chi in nearby parks—often in early morning before going to work. There are many different styles, but all involve slow, relaxed, graceful movements, each flowing into the next. The body is in constant motion, and posture is important. The names of some of the movements evoke nature (e.g., “Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain”). Individuals practicing tai chi must also concentrate, putting aside distracting thoughts; and they must breathe in a deep and relaxed, but focused manner.

Use in the United States According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, an estimated 2.3 million U.S. adults had used tai chi in the past 12 months.

People practice tai chi for various health-related purposes, such as: For benefits associated with low-impact, weight-bearing, aerobic exercise To improve physical condition, muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility To improve balance and decrease the risk of falls, especially in elderly people To ease pain and stiffness—for example, from osteoarthritis To improve sleep For overall wellness.

The Status of Tai Chi Research Scientific research on the health benefits of tai chi is ongoing. Several studies have focused on the elderly, including tai chi’s potential for preventing falls and improving cardiovascular fitness and overall well-being. A 2007 NCCAM-funded study on the immune response to varicella-zoster virus (the virus that causes shingles) suggested that tai chi may enhance the immune system and improve overall well-being in older adults. Tai chi has also been studied for improving functional capacity in breast cancer patients and quality of life in people with HIV infection. Studies have also looked at tai chi’s possible benefits for a variety of other conditions, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and osteoarthritis. In 2008, a review of published research, also funded by NCCAM, found that tai chi reduced participants’ blood pressure in 22 (of 26) studies.

Aches and pains have long plagued people of all ages and walks of life.

But exciting new technological advances are helping doctors of chiropractic get to the root causes of pain more rapidly than ever before. Statewide professionals, are using lasers to treat arthritis pain and dysfunction more efficiently by reducing the swelling and improving circulation to the affected tissues.

Dr. Evans, owner of Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic in New Berlin, began using the noninvasive therapy system known as the MLS Class 4 Laser at her clinic in January of 2011. The laser accelerates the inflammatory process (ie healing process) and this is why the patient recovers more quickly.”

As advances have been made with technology, Class 4 lasers have enabled chiropractic professionals to venture into previously unheard of territory. Treatments were almost always ineffective for people where scar tissue had formed. Modern laser treatments have given professionals an opportunity to work through scar tissue – a scenario that has proven especially beneficial for the elderly and people who have had surgery.

“One of the laser wave forms actually can break up old scar tissue when paired with the correct machine parameters thus allowing for greater joint motion and flexibility,” Evans said. “I like to think of it as WD-40 for the joints.”

Walking has long been recommended as a key exercise in addressing weight gain—particularly for the aging population.

But when a person has joint problems and pain, when walking could be a beneficial exercise is not an option.

“Our bodies are meant to move but when movement causes pain it is almost impossible to remain healthy and vital thru the aging process,” Evans said.

TO BOOST YOUR CHILDS IMMUNE SYSTEM Dr. Cristina Ramirez Cold and flu season is nearly upon us and, like every mother, I’m worried about how it will affect my children this year. Kids are constantly sharing germs at daycare, school, and play dates so it is certain that your child will be exposed to the viruses that cause colds and flu. Whether your child gets sick, and how sick the child gets, is determined by how strong their immune system is. Because the immune system is greatly influenced by lifestyle, introducing a few changes can make the difference between a healthy winter and one that is filled with fevers, aches, and stuffiness.

Chiropractic care is one way to boost the effectiveness of the immune system.

Chiropractors correct misalignments (also called subluxations) of the spine and other joints in the body. When a vertebra is misaligned it affects the functioning of the associated spinal nerve and the health of the nervous system in general. The immune system, along with every other system in the body, is controlled by the nervous system. When the nervous system is functioning at its most optimum level it positively affects the immune system. Research literature suggests that chiropractic adjustments increase antibody levels, numbers of natural killer cells, phagocytic activity, and numbers of lymphocytes. Chiropractic care for children is specific, gentle, and safe. Adjustments for children involve a very light touch or instrument that gently guides the misaligned bone back into place.

Nutrition is another area that can greatly influence the functioning of the immune system. One way to affect the immune system dramatically is to reduce the amount of sugar that your child eats. The American Heart Association recommends that children eat no more than three teaspoons of sugar a day in any form. However, recent research has shown that the average child between the ages of one and three years old eats twelve teaspoons a day and children between the ages of four and eight years eat twenty-one teaspoons of sugar a day on average. Excess sugar in the diet reduces the ability of white cells to kill germs that invade the body.

Sugar can be hidden in foods that parents often don’t expect. Cereal, crackers, ketchup, and canned soup are just some of the foods that often contain high amounts of sugar. When reading food labels it is important to know the other names that sugar may be listed as including barley malt, corn syrup, dextrose, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, lactose, maltose, molasses, and many others.

In addition to reducing sugar, adding nutrient-dense foods is an effective nutritional way to boost the immune system. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids such as flax oil and salmon increase the activity of phagocytes which are the white blood cells that ingest bacteria that has invaded the body. Many kids may be resistant to eating fish, but adding a few teaspoons flax oil to a smoothie or oatmeal will insure that they receive a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids in their diet.

Selenium-rich foods increase the activity of natural killer cells. Brown rice, chicken, egg yolks, and cottage cheese are all high in selenium and tend to be palatable to most children. Whole grains and vegetables are also excellent ways to add selenium and increase the quality of your child’s diet in general.

Bioflavonoids are phytonutrients that are found in fruits and vegetables. Eating bioflavonoids help the immune system by protecting cell membranes against environmental pollutants. Besides serving fresh fruits and/or vegetables to your child at each meal you may also steam and puree vegetables to add into dishes to increase their intake of these important bioflavonoids. Sweet potato can be added to pancakes, muffins, and even macaroni and cheese. Zucchini and spinach may be added to breads, muffins, or smoothies. Cauliflower can be added to scrambled eggs or oatmeal.

(No doubt, for most of us the possibilities are endless.) But one good idea for many might be creating (or updating) a long-term financial plan.

According to a 2013 survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, “the percentage of workers confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement is essentially unchanged from the record lows observed in 2011.” Only 13 percent are very confident of being able to afford a comfortable retirement, while 28 percent are not at all confident.

Question: What are the benefit amounts for which a spouse may be entitled?

Answer: A spouse receives one-half of the retired worker’s full benefit if the spouse retires at full retirement age. If the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age, we reduce those benefits by a percentage based on how much earlier the spouse retires. However, if a spouse is taking care of a child who is either under age 16 or disabled and receiving Social Security benefits, a spouse gets full (one-half) benefits, regardless of age. If you are eligible for both your own retirement benefit and for benefits as a spouse, we always pay your own benefit first. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE SOCIABLE, GENEROUS, AND GOAL-ORIENTED MAY BE HAPPIER AND LESS DEPRESSED THAN OTHER PEOPLE.

Research shows that people who are sociable, generous, and goal-oriented may be happier and less depressed than other people. Sitting at home alone could help explain why Melvin is not feeling like himself. Volunteering might help Melvin feel better. According to researchers, older adults who participate in what they believe are meaningful activities, like volunteering in their communities, say they feel healthier and happier. For example, older adult volunteers from an urban community worked approximately 15 hours a week in their neighborhood public elementary schools, in a special program designed to improve children’s school success.

Researchers learned that the older volunteers increased their cognitive, social, and physical activity levels. Participants also reported feeling personal satisfaction from the experience. Although more research is needed, researchers think that over the long term the participants may have decreased their risk for disability, dependency, and dementia in later life.

Many causes need help from volunteers. For example, groups that help homeless people need volunteers to serve meals or organize clothing donations. The USO needs people to send care packages to soldiers stationed overseas. Animal shelters need help caring for dogs and cats. Senior groups need aides to help people with disabilities run their errands. The list goes on. Researchers have found that older adults, like Maria, who take part in these types of activities often do so to make a difference in their communities and feel good about what they are doing.

But, there are plenty of other options for places to volunteer or be socially active. Where you look to find these opportunities might depend on what you are interested in doing. The following are some examples of social and productive activities you might like: Volunteering at a library, hospital, or other community health facility Joining a senior center Playing cards and other games with your friends Going to the theater, a movie, or a sporting event Traveling with a group of older adults, perhaps a retiree group Visiting friends and family Trying different restaurant Gardening in your backyard or at a community park Organizing a park clean-up through your local recreation center Taking a cooking class Singing in a choral group

Joining a local theater troupe Forming or joining a book club Going dancing Taking a group exercise class Playing a musical instrument, learning a new instrument

Joining a group interested in a hobby like knitting or wood carving Getting a part-time job Everyone has different limits to the amount of time he or she can spend on social or other activities. What is perfect

for one person might be too much for another. Ted may cut back his volunteer hours and find that doing a little less is just right for him. His friend Rasheed may feel that doing two activities—a monthly book club and tutoring once a week in the high school—is enough.

PERFECT RECIPE FOR RETIREMENT

Sweet potato and pumpkin pie. Every family has its Thanksgiving dinner traditions. With a carefully followed recipe, everyone around the table can enjoy their favorite dishes.

If you plan poorly and wait to throw the bird in the oven at the last minute, you will end up with a turkey of a dish. The same can be said for financial planning and preparing for retirement. Follow the perfect recipe and you’ll be rewarded with a juicy retirement.

Ingredients: one part Social Security earnings, one part savings, a pinch of planning.

First, start your retirement casserole with a visit to the Retirement Estimator. As useful as a food processor, the Estimator gives you an instant projection of what you can expect to receive in retirement benefits. Just plug in some simple information and the Estimator uses your past earnings and estimated future earnings to project about how much you’ll get when you retire. Like an experienced cook, you can experiment with the recipe and plug in different future earnings and retirement dates until it’s just the way you want it.

Next, fold in the savings. The earlier you begin, the better off you will be. Social Security replaces about 40 percent of the average worker’s pre-retirement earnings.

Most financial advisors say you will need 70 percent or more of pre-retirement earnings to live comfortably. To supplement Social Security you also will need savings, investments, pensions, or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to enjoy retirement. Healthy Aging AGING IS GENERALLY CHARACTERIZED BY A DECLINE IN PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE ABILITIES AND INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DISEASE.

Geroscience looks at mechanisms by which the basic biology of aging drives chronic diseases prevalent among the older population. These studies may lead to identifying critical features for future interventions. The Summit focuses on seven broad areas of research, representing multiple interactions between aging and disease variables: Inflammation. Chronic inflammation plays a featured role in aging and many age-related diseases. It is perhaps the most significant risk factor for morbidity and mortality in older people. Researchers will address questions about whether inflammation is a cause or consequence (or both) of disease and the extent to which some inflammation might be beneficial.

Adaptation to Stress. The enhanced ability to adapt and adequately respond to stress is often observed in long-lived organisms. Mild stress appears to be protective and the ability to properly respond to chronic stress is necessary to promote healthy aging. The point at which mild stress becomes damaging, and whether the ability to deal with stress can be harnessed to decrease disease susceptibility will be discussed.

Epigenetics. Aging and susceptibility to disease are driven by both genetic and non-genetic (environmental) factors. Epigenetics is where these factors intersect— researchers believe that epigenetic alterations in the genome are affected by the environment. The epigenome of older people therefore reflects a lifetime of interactions with the environment. This concept will be explored along with how epigenetics presents new opportunities for intervention.

Metabolism. The way the body produces and uses energy is believed to be at the core of the biology of aging. Both dietary restriction and the drug rapamycin extend lifespan in mice by interfering with nutrient-sensing and cellular metabolism. final 1/2 pg bridgeway healthwise ad_Layout 1 3/23/12 11:18 AM Page 1

Researchers will discuss evidence suggesting that improving metabolic efficiency might be effective to combat age-related disease processes.

Macromolecular Damage. Aging is accompanied by increased damage to proteins, lipids (fats), and DNA. To what extent this damage relates to aging and susceptibility to disease is unknown. Researchers are also reevaluating the role of free radicals (a byproduct of metabolic activity). Previously thought to drive aging, free radicals may actually be a signal alerting the body of potential danger.

Proteostasis. Maintaining the quality of proteins under varying conditions is essential to preserve cell function and adapt to changing environments. Proteostasis prevents the accumulation of misfolded proteins and consequent health problems, but efficiency decreases with age. Improved understanding of proteostasis may lead to new aging and disease therapies. The session will focus on questions about proteostasis that relate to health span extension.

Adult Stem Cells and Regeneration. Stem cells are a potential cure for many agerelated degenerative diseases. Recent work has focused on characterizing adult stem cells and their activities during aging. They are often present in older mice, but with reduced or altered function. Questions regarding stem cell interactions with their environment and ways to preserve stem cell quality during aging will be discussed.

Ayurvedic Self-Massage

Ayurveda, the holistic medicine system from ancient India, recognizes that every phase in your life presents new challenges and also new opportunities.

Ayurveda, the holistic medicine system from ancient India, recognizes that every phase in your life presents new challenges and also new opportunities. In childhood, you are in your “Kapha” time of life, a time when it is said that mainly the earth element is activated. As a child, you are grounding into your experience of who you are and figuring out your place in your family or tribe. On a physical level, the Kapha period can also show itself as an expansion period as you gain more height and body-mass. Your body is well lubricated, full of “baby fat” and mucus.

In your adult years, puberty to age 60, you are in your Pitta time of life. Pitta is mainly associated with the fire element. Pitta time of life is a time of pioneering.

You stake out your profession, mate and land. You focus on your transformation and expression of your ego. On a physical level this fire infused period can be experienced as increased inflammation in the body and hormonal changes and shifts in sexuality.

Finally, in the Wisdom Years of life, from age 60-120 years, you enter the Vata time of life. This is a time in which the air and space elements are dominant. In this period, the body loses mass and lubrication, becomes more refined, ethereal. Earthly concerns or fiery ambitions may transform into a more spiritual outlook. On a physical level, the body becomes drier and your bone frame becomes lighter.

Using the elemental theory in Ayurveda, dry, light, cold, rough and irregular are all qualities that describe the experience of this Vata time in your life. To balance and compensate for the challenges of this period, Ayurveda suggests to bring the qualities into your life that are of an opposite nature to the Vata element. Therefore, desired elements or nature that should be increased are warm, soft, moist, regular and stable.

One of the most prescribed Ayurvedic remedies to the challenges of aging is in the Ayurvedic self-massage. Many thousands of years ago, a famous Ayurvedic scholar named Charaka said that self-massage is the best antidote to old age.

This Ayurvedic wisdom has prevailed all this time to still offer its support to us today.

In the Vata time of life, your body can truly become your temple and your selfmassage your daily ritual to remind you of its sacredness. When the body’s health is supported and disease is not occupying all of your attention, your Wisdom Years can become an enlightening time full of richness. Tapping into the ancient wisdoms of Ayurveda can support you on your journey through time and offer many easy to learn, time-tested methods, of which the self-massage is one of the most important ones. The best time to practice this type of massage is in the morning, BEFORE the bath or shower. This way, you can feel the wonderful benefits all day.

How to do an Ayurvedic self-massage: 1) Gather your supplies. You can use any good vegetable oil, such as co-

conut oil or sunflower oil but the most beneficial oil is sesame oil as it has a small molecular structure that allows for excellent absorption. Sesame oil is also very rich in many important minerals that are nourishing to your bone and skin tissue. Place a good quality sesame oil into a small plastic, preferable with a pump lid. You can add a few drops of aroma oil to it, to enhance it to your liking.

2) Prepare your space. Warm your bathroom well and place the small bottle of massage oil into your closed sink and let the oil warm up by running hot water over the bottle.

3) Massage your whole body from head to toe. Stand on a bathmat or towel and pour a small amount of the warmed massage oil into your hands and begin massaging your body. Start with your head, ears and face. You can also oil your scalp and hair, if you like. Then massage your neck, throat and shoulders before moving to the limbs. In general, use circular moves on the joints and long, sweeping strokes on the long bones. Pay special attention to your hands. Massage your trunk, hips, legs and even feet. Spend about 5 minutes massaging the skin and enjoy this classic Ayurvedic therapy for a relaxing and luxurious experience.

4) After the self-massage. Wipe off the oil on you feet to avoid any slipping. Step into the bath or shower. It is best to use soap only under the arms and in the private area and to avoid soaping the rest of the skin. This way, the remaining oil can absorb into the body during the bath, as the warm water will cause the pours to open and the oil to penetrate deeply. Experience how nourished and smooth your skin feels afterwards! Towel off with an older towel designated to your self-massage routine as the smell of the oil can be hard to remove out of your good linens. Enjoy this wonderful, ancient ritual and may it bestow many benefits to you.

Endurance Exercises

To get all of the benefits of physical activity, try all four types of exercise -- endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. This section discusses endurance activities.

Activities That Increase Breathing and Heart Rate Endurance exercises are activities that increase your breathing and heart rate for an extended period of time. Examples are walking, jogging, swimming, raking, sweeping, dancing, and playing tennis. Build up your endurance gradually, starting with as little as 5 minutes of endurance activities at a time, if you need to. Then try to build up to at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity endurance activity on most or all days of the week. Doing less than 10 minutes at a time won’t give you the desired heart and lung benefits.

Do a little light activity, such as easy walking, before and after your endurance activities to warm up and cool down.

Drink liquids when doing any activity that makes you sweat.

Dress appropriately for the heat and cold. Dress in layers if you’re outdoors so you can add or remove clothes as needed.

When you’re out walking, watch out for low-hanging branches and uneven sidewalks.

Walk during the day or in well-lit areas at night, and be aware of your surroundings.

To prevent injuries, use safety equipment such as helmets for biking.

Endurance activities should not make you breathe so hard that you can’t talk and should not cause dizziness or chest pain.

These are examples of activities that are vigorous. People who have been inactive for a long time or who have certain health risks should not start out with these activities. playing basketball jogging climbing stairs or hills shoveling snow brisk bicycling up hills digging holes Work Your Way Up Gradually Gradually working your way up is especially important if you have been inactive for a long time. It may take months to go from a very long-standing sedentary lifestyle to doing some of the activities suggested in this section.

When you’re ready to do more, build up the amount of time you spend doing endurance activities first, then build up the difficulty of your activities. For example, gradually increase your time to 30 minutes over several days to weeks (or even months, depending on your condition) by walking longer distances. Then walk more briskly or up steeper hills.

EYE<<page 11 Milwaukee, Miller is out from behind a desk and busy with her next project. “I have to get this body back into shape!” she exclaims. To do so, Miller has joined a fitness club with her cousin where they enjoy water aerobics and working with a trainer.

“We’re on the buddy system,” she chuckles. She is proud to report that, through diet and exercise, she has been able to reduce both her insulin intake and A1C level (a blood test that reflects blood sugar levels over a period of 2-3 months).

Another part of healthy living for Miller includes regular visits to Freedman. As part of her care, Miller has had 15 Avastin medication injections since 2011 to inhibit progression of diabetes-related damage to her retina. She admits that she was initially apprehensive about the procedure, but is now comfortable with it. In fact, during her last office visit, she found herself answering questions and reassuring a fellow patient who was about to have his first procedure.

Miller also likes to share her new healthy insights with her family. “When I see younger family members eating too much sugar or carbohydrates, I tell them to watch what they eat. I tell them about everything I’m going through.” Miller is also cooking with a careful eye on labels. “I love to cook! I’m always trying to find good low-carb recipes.”

“Ms. Miller has the right idea!” says Freedman. “Patients like her who take steps to get healthy make my job a lot easier.”

A little astonished by the fact that she was chosen to help educate the public about diabetic eye disease, Miller says, “I don’t know why you picked me, but if it’s going to help someone, then I have no problem with it. This (diabetic eye disease) is something serious, and people need to take it serious.”

Stroke is the number one cause of serious adult disability in the United States.

Stroke disability is devastating to the stroke patient and family, but therapies are available to help rehabilitate patients after stroke.

Rehabilitation Physical Therapy For most stroke patients, rehabilitation mainly involves physical therapy. The aim of physical therapy is to have the stroke patient relearn simple motor activities such as walking, sitting, standing, lying down, and the process of switching from one type of movement to another.

To achieve this, stroke patients work with physical therapists who use training, exercises, and physical manipulation of the stroke patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body to restore movement, balance, and coordination.

Occupational Therapy Another type of therapy to help patients relearn daily activities is occupational therapy. This type of therapy also involves exercise and training. Its goal is to help the stroke patient relearn everyday activities such as eating, drinking and swallowing, dressing, bathing, cooking, reading and writing, and toileting. Occupational therapists seek to help the patient become independent or semi-independent.

Speech Therapy Speech and language problems arise when brain damage occurs in the language centers of the brain. Due to the brainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great ability to learn and change, which is called brain plasticity, other areas can adapt to take over some of the lost functions.

Speech therapy helps stroke patients relearn language and speaking skills, or learn other forms of communication. Speech therapy is appropriate for patients who have no problems with cognition or thinking, but have problems understanding speech or written words, or problems forming speech.

Besides helping with language skills, speech therapy also helps stroke patients develop coping skills to deal with the frustration of not being able to communicate fully. With time and patience, a stroke survivor should be able to regain some, and sometimes all, language and speaking abilities.

Therapy for Mental Health Many stroke patients require psychological or psychiatric help after a stroke. Psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger are common disabilities in people who have suffered a stroke.

Talk therapy, along with the right medication, can help ease some of the mental and emotional problems that result from stroke. Sometimes it is helpful for family members of the stroke patient to seek psychological help for themselves as well.

Your Sense Of Smell Smell is an important sense. Certain smells can help you recall your dad’s cologne or alert you to danger, like smoke from a fire. When you can’t smell things you enjoy like morning coffee or flowers, part of life may seem very dull.

As you get older, your sense of smell may fade. Your sense of smell is closely related to your sense of taste. So, when you can’t smell, food may taste bland, and you may lose interest in eating.

What Causes Loss Of Smell?

Some things can cause a long lasting loss of smell. A head injury, for example, can damage the nerves related to smell. Protect yourself by wearing a seat belt in the car and a helmet when biking.

Some problems with smell only last for a short time and may be due to: A cold or flu that causes a stuffy nose that blocks your sense of smell. The ability to smell will come back when you’re better.

Allergies that block your sense of smell. Try to avoid things you’re allergic to, like pollen and pets. Talk to your doctor about how to manage your allergies.

A harmless growth (called a polyp) in the nose or sinuses that gives you a runny nose. Having the growth removed may help.

Some medications like antibiotics or blood pressure medicine may affect your sense of smell. Ask your doctor if there is another medicine you can take.

Radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Your sense of smell may return when treatment stops.

Sometimes, loss of the sense of smell may be a sign of a more serious disorder, such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Be sure to tell your doctor about any change in your sense of smell.

Smells Can Keep You Safe It’s important to be aware of odors around you. You need to be able to smell: Smoke—check your smoke detectors once a year to make sure they work.

Gas leaks—make sure you have a gas detector in your home.

Spoiled food—throw out food that’s been in the refrigerator too long.

Household chemicals—make sure there is fresh air where you’re working.

Your Sense Of Taste There are tiny taste buds all over your mouth—on your tongue, in your throat, even on the roof of your mouth. What we call “flavor” is based on five basic tastes— sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and tangy. How food smells also makes up its flavor.

When food tastes bland, many older people try to improve the flavor by adding more salt or sugar. This may not be healthy, especially if you have medical problems like high blood pressure or diabetes (high blood sugar).

When food doesn’t taste right, you may not eat the foods you need to keep you healthy. This can cause health problems such as: Weight loss Social isolation Depression Eating food that is good for you is important to your health. If you have a problem with how food tastes, be sure to discuss it with your doctor.

What Causes Your Sense Of Taste To Change?

There are many things that can cause you to lose your sense of taste. Most of the time, you can do something to regain taste.

Some medications can change the way food tastes. These include some antibiotics and medicines to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Other medications can make your mouth dry. Having a dry mouth can cause food to taste funny and make it hard to swallow. If you think a medicine is changing how your food tastes, talk to your doctor before you stop taking your medicine.

Gum disease, dentures, and some infections can leave a bad taste in your mouth that changes the way food tastes. You may prevent this problem by brushing your teeth, flossing, and using mouthwash. If you have a bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away, talk to your dentist.

Alcohol can alter the way food tastes. Cutting back or stopping drinking may help.

Also, smoking can reduce your sense of taste. Quitting may help.

Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. It begins slowly and gets worse over time. Currently, it has no cure.

A Common Cause of Dementia Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older people. Dementia is a loss of thinking, remembering, and reasoning skills that interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Dementia ranges in severity from the mild stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning, to the severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic care.

Estimates vary, but experts suggest that as many as 5.1 million people in the United States may have Alzheimer’s disease. Symptoms usually begin after age 60, and the risk of developing the disease increases with age. While younger people -- in their 30s, 40s, and 50s -- may get Alzheimer’s disease, it is much less common. It is important to note that Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.

The time from diagnosis to death varies, too. It can be as little as 3 or 4 years if the person is over 80 years old when diagnosed or as long as 10 years or more if the person is younger.

Memory Problems Memory problems are typically one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease. People with Alzheimer’s have trouble doing everyday things like driving a car, cooking a meal, or paying bills. They may ask the same questions over and over, get lost easily, lose things or put them in odd places, and find even simple things confusing. Some people become worried, angry, or violent.

Not all people with memory problems have Alzheimer’s disease. Mild forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. Some people may notice that it takes longer to learn new things, remember certain words, or find their glasses.

Sometimes memory problems are related to health issues that are treatable. For example, medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, or liver or kidney disorders can lead to memory loss or possibly dementia. Emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety, or depression, can also make a person more forgetful and may be mistaken for dementia.

Mild Cognitive Impairment Some older people with memory or other thinking problems have a condition called mild cognitive impairment, or MCI. MCI can be an early sign of Alzheimer’s, but not everyone with MCI will develop Alzheimer’s disease. People with MCI can still take care of themselves and do their normal activities.

Signs of MCI may include losing things often forgetting to go to events and appointments having more trouble coming up with words than other people the same age.

If you or someone in your family thinks your forgetfulness is getting in the way of your normal routine, it’s time to see your doctor. Seeing the doctor when you first start having memory problems can help you find out what’s causing your forgetfulness.

What Happens to the Brain in Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. He found many abnormal clumps (now called amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibers (now called neurofibrillary tangles). Plaques and tangles in the brain are two of the main features of Alzheimer’s disease. The third is loss of connections between nerve cells in the brain.

Although we still don’t know how Alzheimer’s disease begins, it seems likely that damage to the brain starts 10 years or more before problems become obvious. During the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s, people are free of symptoms, but harmful changes are taking place in the brain. Abnormal protein deposits form plaques and tangles in the brain. Once-healthy nerve cells lose their ability to function and communicate with each other, and eventually they die.

ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES PROVIDING AN ALTERNATIVE Quite often, adults reach a point when they should no longer live on their own but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need round-the-clock nursing care. Assisted living facilities provide an alternative. Assisted living is for adults who need help with everyday tasks of dressing, bathing, eating, or using the bathroom. But they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need full-time nursing care.

Often they are part of retirement communities or are near nursing homes, so a person can move easily if their needs change.

Although assisted living costs less than nursing home care, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging, it is still fairly expensive. Older people or their families usually foot the bill. Health and long-term care insurance policies may cover some of the costs. Medicare does not cover the costs of assisted living.

Licensing requirements for assisted living facilities vary by state. There are as many as 26 different names for assisted living, among them: residential care, board and care, congregate care, and personal care.

WOUNDS<<page 12 tribe want to be near them. They say they feel closer to God through the pain of the wounded one. They honor and revere the gifts of wounding. They know they are in the presence of Soul alchemy. They hold sacred space for the one in pain.

People in our culture are afraid to be around pain. If we have an incurable wound, many people avoid us.

They deflect any talk of it and remain in superficial dialogue. They want us to ‘get over it’ and to focus on ‘the positive,’ to say we are ‘fine’ or ‘better off,’ as if this tactic will somehow erase the memory of the sacred wound in our Soul. All that our pain needs is to be witnessed, to be held and honored by another when it is unbearable. This is what helps it change shape and form, and morph into Medicine through sacred alchemy.

There is grave danger in avoiding (denying) pain. There is also danger in medicating or suppressing it. This interrupts the alchemical union between heart and Soul.

The energy of pain is here to transform us. When we deny or suppress it, we get sick.

We must reframe it so we can learn and grow in wisdom. We must understand its alchemical purpose. Pain ultimately helps us love more deeply. It makes us trustworthy. It gives us strength.

These are the gifts of our wounds.

Fall is a time when I re-member. When I remember the pain I also connect with its power that shaped my Soul and healed me in ways that no other wound could. I now feel an even deeper kind of LOVE, a fierce love, from where I can offer myself out into the world. The ring of light around my wound keeps me humble and makes me REAL. Now I am much stronger. The ‘proud flesh’ that grew from the broken place within has power and resilience. It has the capacity to love like never before. It can hold the pain of others who ask me to bear witness to what feels unbearable. Proud flesh is good Medicine for the heart and the world.

And yet, the soft, tender center of my wound remains open. It will never heal. It is the mark of my initiation. This is now where my LOVE flows through. Like a river that changed course, empathy, truth and beauty flows through it like never before.

Sometimes it still bleeds and hurts, but mostly, it feels gratitude and loves deeply enough to want to heal the pain and sorrows of the world.

And my 12 year old with infinite wisdom is now a beautiful woman who like me and my son carries ‘proud flesh, and yes, she was right, it didn’t last. But my love for them is a love like no other, woven now with golden thread between the tender places in our hearts. We know the Medicine we carry and have become the family we once lost.
