discGOLF

A 70’s TRADITION STILL PLAYING OUT

By: David Louis

Disc golf is played much like traditional ball golf. But instead of a ball and clubs, players use a plastic flying disc, or commonly known as a Frisbee. The sport, invented in the 1970’s, is the same as ball golf with the goal being to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes or throws. A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is commonly known in as a “pole hole”. As the golfer plays down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. This is called the “lie”. Another major difference between disc golf and ball golf is the course itself. Whereas traditional ball golf courses are vast open areas of groomed grass disc golf can be, and often is, played in rough terrain and even densely wooded areas. Trees, shrubs, and extreme terrain changes in and around fairways create interesting and challenging obstacles for the disc golfer. To finish each hole, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. The score is tallied by counting up all the “throws” on that hole, then adding them up with all the other holes on the course for a total score. The player with the lowest score, or number of throws, is the winner. Disc golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of athletic ability or background. One doesn’t have to be financially well off either to participate in disc golf. It cost nothing to play on almost all disc golf courses which are located mostly in public parks throughout the country. The equipment used can be minimal consisting of, as little as, one plastic golf disc or as many discs as one is willing to carry. The price of a disc is in the $10 range. A golf disc is smaller and heavier than a traditional Frisbee which allows it to fly farther. Because of their unique design, these discs require a different throwing technique than a traditional Frisbee which takes a few throws to get used to. Most disc golf courses are roughly a mile in length, which makes the game accessible to people of all ages and physical capacity. Here in Southeastern Wisconsin, there are many courses within as little as a one hour drive from Milwaukee with some of the best courses located right in our area. The Mach 2 disc golf basket is an excellent entry-level outdoor disc golf basket for the backyard, schools, colleges or any recreational course. The Mach II galvanized coating provides a major increase in durability over powder coated or zinc plated metal finishes and is the perfect practice basket for outdoor permanent use.

THE TRANSFORMATION HAS BEGUN.

The Strain

It can no longer be denied — New York City is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Its citizens must fight or die. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his unlikely allies tried to take down the embodiment of this evil — the Master — and failed. Now Eph and Dr. Nora Martinez concentrate on creating a biological weapon to wipe out the creatures, while Abraham Setrakian searches for an ancient book he hopes will reveal the strigoi’s entire history...and possibly a way to kill them. Meanwhile, the Master is out for revenge, unleashing new and even more terrifying breeds of bloodthirsty creatures. They need to find a way to defeat him before the infection spreads too far and becomes irreparable...before they become monsters themselves. he show’s executive producers include Oscar-nominated writer Guillermo del Toro and Emmy-winning producer Carlton Cuse.

People who are looking for a jump-start to their fitness program should give this a try. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, a fitness enthusiast, or simply tired of the same routine, try this whole new approach and attitude to exercise and FUN! Boot Camps are an awesome way to not only help a person lose weight, but also to develop strength and gain that extra confidence! This is a 60-minute exercise program held weekdays in four-week sessions. There are Adventure Boot Camp classes offered around the world by certified instructors who complete an extensive certification and business coaching program. Though ‘boot camp’ may sound intimidating, it’s not that grueling hour with screaming drill sergeants. In actuality you will get a fun/effective workout that allows you to be successful all with the positive instruction of your coach. What’s a typical day at camp? “Every day is different than the day before so there’s nothing typical about it”, says instructor Chuck Walker. “In order to get the results you want, you have to keep your body guessing. You might see campers doing push-ups and crunches, weightlifting, obstacle courses, kickboxing, hiking, Yoga, and more— whatever it takes to get in shape! On one day we might use the whole hour doing exercises with just your body weight. The next day we’ll have the group doing a medicine ball workout while I do a 2-4 minute one-on-one kickboxing workout with each camper as they rotate through stations. Everyone gets that personal training touch in camp. Also, because everybody needs a little bit of encouragement from time to time, we’ll help you keep track of your progress, with regular evaluations of your weight and body fat composition.” Simply put, “this isn’t your old-school aerobics class”. It’s more like a culmination of every fitness class you’ve ever taken, or wanted to take, chiseled into an hour of fat-burning, muscle-building action! And, before camp even ends you’re going to notice improvements such as strength and confidence. And, now your clothes are loose fitting, and many compliments are coming your way. Before you know it summer will be here. Let this be the year you look forward to walking around in your swim suit without that little wrap! You can do it with Adventure Boot Camp. Organize

Your DORM

College apartments and dorm rooms are famous for being ridiculously small. With a little creativity, and planning, you can find ways to make more room for yourself-and your stuff. Most of you don’t have things that serves only one function and takes up more space than needed. Sure, a plug-in grilled cheese maker seems cool, but it takes up space and can only do one thing. Make sure that each item you need has more than one function. When planning out your space having a speaker system for your iPod that charges it at the same time helps keep your space efficient. Share with your roommates like having a printer that prints but also scans and copies that you can all use. Have the same blanket that you use to take out for sporting events as your bed cover as well. You spend alot of money for your small space and you should enjoy it. Living in a chaos is less productive for you and your roomates. Think of the things you’ll really need at any time and how often you use them. True, you may love to burn CDs with your favorite music. Instead of using CDs and DVD for your needed computer files, downsize with a simple zipdrive. If you must have blank CDs, reduce them to only a handful and keep all computer “needs” in one container.

or Apartment

HOW TO

Sharing with your roommates is key. Do you really need two printers? Two minifridges? Coffee makers? Sometimes this can get you into disputs over decaf or regular coffee, that was my pizza. Communication is crazy important when maximizing space to help make you and your roomates space more organized and efficient. Most likely, you and your roommate can make things work out by sharing some of the most important stuff. Empty spaces can be used as decorative storage. Get rid of the old school plastic bins that end up piled in the corner. Now adays, you can go and pick up storage bins that have colorful style and function. Think of using them as style features. Use a small box to store remotes and magazines on your coffee table. A trunk can be a great coffee or side table. Your bed takes up a ton of space and has a great amount of space to fill underneath. In the back where you can’t reach as easy put your summer clothes, and other things you need but use infrequently. Keeping things organized as often as you can will bring peace to your state of mind. Keeping a space organized and clean will actually make your small dorm or apartment seem much larger.

A quick road trip to Chicago State closes out the non-league slate Jan. 3.

available on the Milwaukee website. The all-time series currently sits all square at 4-4-3. The two teams tied, 1-1, a season ago. UWM took the 2013 contest by a score of 1-0 as well as the 2012 regular-season edition by a score of 2-1. The Crusaders did, however, end Milwaukee’s campaign in the league tournament that season with a 1-0 decision. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: VALPARAISO: The Crusaders are off to a fast start, posting a 5-2-2 record that includes a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Valparaiso won in dramatic fashion Monday, topping No. 23 Omaha by a score of 1-0. With the win, the Crusaders set a program record by earning a result for the seventh straight game (5-0-2), while also defeating multiple ranked opponents in the same season for the first time. The team also knocked off then-#18 Western Michigan while also topping #14 Indiana in exhibition play.

Valpo was picked to finish in second place in the 2015 Horizon League preseason poll following a successful 8-5-6 mark last season that featured a national ranking for the program for the first time ever. Isaiah Madrid paces the offense with nine points on a team-best four goals, while the defense has been the star of the show. The squad has allowed just six goals in nine games, with goalkeeper Nico Campbell posting a 0.60 goalsagainst average and five shutouts. CLOSE DOES COUNT Outside of a lopsided victory in the opener over Evansville and a loss to the now No. 1 team in the land in Creighton just afterwards, the past six games the Panthers have played have been onegoal decisions or have gone into overtime. Milwaukee has also played backto-back double-OT contests heading into play against Valparaiso, something that has not happened since playing in three 2OT games in a row at the end of Sep-

tember in 2012. That year, UWM lost to Bowling Green (2-1) Sept. 25 before playing back-to-back double-overtime draws against Loyola (1-1) and Green Bay (2-2). BETTER LATE THAN NEVER The Panthers found a way to earn the hard-fought 1-0 victory over Oakland Sept. 19 in the waning minutes, with freshman Francesco Saporito putting home the golden goal on a beautiful 20yard free kick just three-plus minutes from the end of the second overtime (goal came at 106:43). That ended a streak of double-overtime jinxes at 12 games, as Milwaukee had been 0-1-10 in the previous 11 games it played into the second overtime period. The last 2OT win? Cody Banks’ memorable goal to claim the Chancellors Cup on September 28, 2011 - giving UWM the 3-2 victory with the clock reading 109:53. MAKING THE BIG TIME The freshmen on the roster have been playing a key role and found some recognition for it Sept. 27 when four of them were featured on the “Beyond the Game” segment on FOX 6 Sports with Tim Van

Vooren. Newcomers Matthias Binder, Tinashe Marowa, Francesco Saporito and Josh Kaye were the foursome featured in the segment on local TV. PART OF HISTORY The Panthers and all of the fans jampacked into Engelmann Stadium for the ‘Milwaukee Cup’ matchup against Marquette Sept. 3 became part of history. The 4,030 in attendance not only blew away the old facility record of 3,312 (set in the 2013 ‘Milwaukee Cup’), but was also the largest crowd to ever watch a collegiate men’s soccer game in the history of the state of Wisconsin. UWM now holds four of the top five spots on the list. 4,030 - SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 (MKE CUP) 3,312 - Aug. 30, 2013 - Milwaukee 2, Marquette 1 (MKE CUP) 3,256 - Sept. 13, 2006 - Milwaukee 3, Marquette 2 (MKE CUP) 3,000 - Nov. 22, 1980 - Cleveland State 1, Milwaukee 0 2,470 - Oct. 13, 1995 - Wisconsin 2, Indiana 0 2,250 - Sept. 3, 1990 - Milwaukee 0, Evansville 0 soccer>>page 16

2,145 - Oct. 15, 1993 - Indiana 5, Wisconsin 1 2,138 - Oct. 1, 2003 - Wisconsin 1, Milwaukee 0 LEAGUE LIFTOFF The Panthers are now 20-8-2 all-time in league openers in seasons in which they have been affiliated with a conference. Head coach Kris Kelderman is 1-1-1 in his three seasons, with the team falling to Cleveland State to open conference play a season ago. WELCOME TO MILWAUKEE There will be plenty of chances for newcomers to make an impression in 2015, as 14 players out of the 33 on the roster will be making their UWM debuts this year, all as freshmen. It’s one of youngest rosters in the land, as seven sophomores give the Panthers 21 underclassmen. Based on a recent analysis, just a handful have more across the country. Tulsa, with 15 freshmen and nine sophomores (24 total underclassmen) leads the list. 24 - Tulsa 23 - Radford & East Tennessee State 22 - Bradley 21 - Milwaukee, Xavier & Northeastern 20 - Indiana & Seton Hall And they have been playing a major role so far. Six players out of the group have appeared in every game so far and five have started all seven contests (Matthias Binder, Francesco Saporito, Tinashe Marowa, Sean Holmes & Jason P. Svensson). THE BATTLE FOR THE MILWAUKEE CUP Milwaukee and Marquette play for the “Milwaukee Cup”, one of the longeststanding rivalries in all of college soccer. In fact, in the summer of 2011, the College Soccer News website published a list of what they called “The Fourteen Greatest Rivalries in College Soccer.” Weighing in at No. 10 on their list was the Milwaukee Cup. The Panthers certainly have the upper hand all-time, now holding a 28-11-4 record in the series. They also posted back-to-back wins very recently, reclaiming the Cup in 2010 with a 4-2 victory and keeping possession in 2011 with a 2-1 final score. The 2012 matchup will also go down in the memory books, as the Golden Eagles, trailing the Panthers 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest, pulled off a stunning finish to grab possession of the Cup. Following a goalkeeper miscue, Marquette found the equalizer at the 81:53 mark and then won the contest at the buzzer as the winning goal crossed the line at the 89:59 mark before the horn sounded. The 2013 edition was just as exciting, with the Panthers scoring just 60 seconds into the affair en route to a 2-1 victory over a Marquette squad that was ranked No. 12 at the time. FOR OPENERS Milwaukee is now 21-17-5 all-time in season openers, including a 26-12-5 ledger in home openers after dominating Evansville, 5-2, Aug. 28. Head coach Kris Kelderman now has five season openers on his resume at the NCAA Division I collegiate level, going 4-1-0. In addition to the victories over the Purple Aces (2015), DePaul (2014) and a nationally-ranked Marquette squad (2013), his Green Bay squad topped SIU Edwardsville, 1-0, in 2011. DAZZLING OPENER There were many highlights for the Panthers from the season-opening 5-2 victory over Evansville. Among them: -The most goals scored in a season opener since 1996 (a 5-0 win over Northwestern) and the second-most all time (seven is the record). -No fewer than six freshmen (#4 Josh Kaye, #10 Matthias Binder, #19 Sean Holmes, #26 Francesco Saporito, #27 Jason P. Svensson & #28 Tinashe Marowa) started the contest, the most for a UWM team in at least the past 20 years. The former high-water mark was four freshmen, which has been done three times (2014, 2011, 2009). -Senior Declan Rodriguez scored twice to become the first player to record a brace in a season opener since Edison Crespo had a pair vs. Marquette in the 2010 opener. The program record remains a hat trick (3) by Dan Day in 1984. -The two newcomers to score (Binder/Saporito) became the sixth and seventh freshmen since 2000 to net a goal in the opener. BRING ON THE CUP Speaking of the “Milwaukee Cup”, it is one of the three traveling trophies that the Panthers play for each and every season. In addition, Milwaukee takes on Green Bay for the “Chancellor’s Cup” and also play Northern Illinois for the “LeWang Trophy”. Back in 2011, UWM posted wins in all three games (2-1 over Marquette; 3-2 in double-overtime against Green Bay and 1-0 against NIU) to hold all three trophies for the first time since the start of the 2005 campaign. A year ago, the team tied the Phoenix, 2-2 (Green Bay kept the cup), and also tied NIU, 2-2, to retain possession of the LeWang Cup. Top-10 program in 2015, with the Blue Jays ranked No. 6 by the National Soccer Coaches Association when they played (they rose to No. 1 Sept. 8). The Panthers had not played a Top-10 team since the 2009 season, dropping a 2-0 decision to then-No. 9 UC Santa Barbara. The last time UWM played a team as high as No. 6 was when it took on then-No. 6 Washington in 2006, falling 2-1 in overtime. A season ago, Milwaukee was 0-3 against Top 25 opponents, but is just a year removed from winning two of three games against ranked opponents in 2013. That season, the Panthers opened with a 2-1 win over No. 12 Marquette and beat No. 23 UIC 2-0 in the Horizon League Tournament Championship before falling to No. 19 Wisconsin, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. EXHIBITION SEASON REWIND Milwaukee played a pair of exhibition contests this year, playing Loyola to a 1-1 draw (no overtime periods were played) and a 2-0 loss to a very good SIU Edwardsville team that is coming off a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and is the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley Conference race this year. The team recorded 18 shots in the two games, led by five off the feet of senior Declan Rodriguez. Sophomore Nick Moon was next with three, while freshmen Tinashe Marowa (goal) and Josh Kaye (assist) combined on the score. Time in goal was split in half each contest, with senior Agustin Rey allowing one goal and making two saves. Junior Liam Anderson was credited with three saves and allowed a pair of goals. NOW THIS IS HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE When it comes to home field advantage, the Panthers have historically ranked right up there with the best in the business. From 2001 through 2006, UWM turned Engelmann Stadium into a place visiting teams did not want to see on their schedule, going 49-8-2 in that time. After a few down seasons by UWM standards, the magic is back - the Panthers have compiled a record of 16-5-3 at home in Kris Kelderman’s three years as the head coach. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS The squad lost a very talented senior class - which included an All-American - and four regular starters overall. What that means is that there will be plenty of opportunity for a new group of players to shine. The Panthers lost two of their top three point scorers from 2014. If you look over the list, the team lost over half of its total points (32 of 59) and half of its goals (9 of 18). POSTSEASON HARDWARE The team had six players earn all-conference honors in 2014, with a pair of seniors moving on with first-team accolades in All-American Laurie Bell and captain Luke Goodnetter. Three of the six are back on the field in 2015. Declan Rodriguez was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team, while Nick Moon and Reid Stevenson were named to the all-freshman team. Rodriguez earned second-team status for the second time in his career in the midfield, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman in 2012. He started and appeared in 17 games, playing every minute of 14 of the contests in recording a pair of goals on the season and 32 shots. PRESEASON CHATTER The Panthers are targeted as the fifth place team in a tightly-packed Horizon League, according to the HeroSports.com website, with Oakland as holding the top spot. The website tabs senior Declan Rodriguez as “The Cornerstone” and hails sophomore Reid Stevenson as “The Supporting Cast”. CATCH THEM ANYWHERE Milwaukee men’s soccer will be readily available for the viewing pleasure of UWM fans this season, as eight home games will be streamed live on ESPN3. The Horizon League and ESPN have an agreement that includes ESPN hosting the league’s digital network on the ESPN3 platform. ESPN3 is available to nearly 116.3 million homes. In addition, the men’s game against Marquette Sept. 3 and Green Bay Oct. 14 are set to be televised locally by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. A LOOK BACK AT THE SCHEDULE The Panthers certainly had their hands full with the strength of their schedule prior to the start of league play in 2014. In addition to playing teams that were ranked No. 19 (George Mason) and No. 22 (American) at the time, UWM took on No. 17 Marquette Sept. 17. On top of that, Milwaukee played an Oregon State team that ended up nationally-ranked and matched up with a Creighton squad (a 0-0 draw in the exhibition season) that was as high as the No. 2 team in the land. In fact, that stretch marked a program first. Never before had Milwaukee played three consecutive games against ranked opponents. The most prior was two and has occurred on just a pair of occasions: UWM played No. 23 UIC in the league tournament championship and then No. 19 Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament in 2013. The only other prior occurrence was in the NCAA’s in the 2004 postseason, defeating No. 20 San Francisco before falling to No. 1 UC Santa Barbara. ON TAP The team remains will have two games next week, starting Tuesday with the annual clash for the LeWang Trophy against Northern Illinois. The road game is set for a 7 p.m. start in DeKalb, Ill., prior to a weekend matchup at Belmont.

An Open Letter to

Paul McCartney By Anonymous

Let me preface this letter by saying you could easily be considered the greatest musician in the history of man. Your library of recorded music is far and away the best out there. As part of the most influential band in the history of recorded music, you were arguably the best of the group. The only people who don’t like any of the Beatles catalog are either those who don’t know their listening to it or those who haven’t heard it. You have too many great songs for a listener not to like some of it. Having said all that, you need to put on a better live show. It feels like you’re more in love with the response from the crowd, than putting out a quality vocal performance. Great singers really only care about the quality of their vocal performance. They love to sing and can always wring a great performance even out of old, stale songs. It seems like you sing with more ego than passion. The crowd’s going to love you no matter how horrible the performance is so there shouldn’t be much satisfaction in a great crowd reaction. Two singers come that come to mind when I think of quality – Paul Rodgers and James Taylor. They are craftsmen, artisans. Although they each sing different genres of music, they are always soulful and on key. Neither of them sing it like the record, but both can improvise, live and stay on key. There are a handful of singers in this league. This is the gold standard for vocal performers. You have to prove that you can pull it off vocally live. You need to go back and reconnect with the old recordings. You need to put down your ego and admit that your live performance is only mediocre. Give the people what they want – the belief you can do no wrong and your voice is as pure as it is on those recordings. I believe this is a matter of effort, not ability. You need to cement your legend and put out one tour where the vocals are flawless. Work, like you’ve never worked before, and put us in awe of everything that is you. We want to be in that state because we so believe in the magic of your studio recordings and the greatness that is you. You have to approach this like a professional athlete and be disciplined down to the note. This will satisfy everyone’s perceived image of you and will generally mesmerize us. You must listen to the old recordings and remember and reconnect with the magic that made them so flawless and heart felt. It is obvious that you are very disconnected from your legendary material. If you want the ultimate ego rush, have us amazed at the vocal performance you can still provide. We want you t o show everyone that the competition is only for second place because you are so far in first.

The Many Reasons Why Aaron Rodgers Should Catch Your Attention Probably the most gratifying feeling a true fan can have about an athlete is when they witness a level of achievement and mastery of the sport that has never been seen before. When a person feels they are in the presence of pure excellence and exceptional cerebral capability, they feel inspired by the unique effort put forth by the athlete. The thought that anyone can have such persistence and single mindedness along with God given talent is elating. We’re talking Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, Jim Brown and a very select few people. The average Joe can only live vicariously through this kind of excellence. Aaron Rodgers is easily in this category. He’s what we admire the most as true fans. He’s a machine. He doesn’t make mistakes while making huge, if not, incredible plays with relative ease and amazing frequency. There is no other quarterback with as much upside in the history of the NFL. He is the model of efficiency. If the blocking sucks, he moves around efficiently to avoid any potential mishaps. His passes are laser sharp and spot on. This guy is accurate. He can run if the play really breaks down. But, most importantly, he has a knack of knowing which is the most efficient move on any given play. He understands risk/reward like an actuary. His risk tolerance is about zero, yet he makes incredible plays like it’s nothing. He must have learned a few lessons from Bret Favre about what not to do. Specifically, give the ball away. I watch First Take on a fairly regular basis and can’t help but see that Stephan A. has the same look in his eye when he talks about Aaron Rodgers. Anyone that truly understands the discipline of sports can only be amazed by Aaron Rodgers. His efficiency is robotic. The reason Skip doesn’t have the same look is because he doesn’t watch him close enough. Watch him closer Skip, he is the Picasso of football. The thing that stops Rodgers from time to time is McCarthy. Whenever

McCarthy plays a team that he perceives as better he makes his game just slightly more conservative. This usually means he gets the bone headed idea of trying to establish the running game. This completely destroys Rodgers’ rhythm. McCarthy let me tell you something you should know “Rodgers is a god. Trust in Rodgers.” Taking the ball out of his hands is simply inefficient. The defense can know its coming and not stop it. In week two against Seattle, the Packers moved the ball effortlessly down the field when they played five wide receivers and no backs. In other words, they told Seattle they were only going to pass and still couldn’t be stopped. You can tell what kind of day the Packers are going to have by the play calling on the opening drive. If there is more than one running play in the entire series, forget about it, McCarthy’s scared. And, that running play better be buried amidst a barrage of Aaron Rodgers. For those who don’t watch the Packers regularly, the defense is not good. It seems moving Matthews to the middle made a positive difference, but Capers doesn’t understand one basic principle of defense. Good defensive teams eat shrapnel for lunch. They’re not eating caviar and relying on voodoo to get the job done. Harbaugh has a steady diet of shrapnel. His teams are feared. A good defense creates fear. Great schemes only come alive when the fear element is ramped up. Then, everything works. The beauty of Rodgers is that you can have no running game and a suspect defense and still have a very good chance of winning. He is that good. You kind of can’t blame McCarthy. He learned a hard lesson after the Super Bowl year. His team sat around and watched Rodgers go 15-1 and then weren’t prepared for the playoff game. I’m sure he vowed he would never make that mistake again, but unfortunately, this is probably his best move. Rodgers is that good. Everyone can know he’s

dropping back to pass, but he’ll still get the ball to the receiver like a machine. You have Aaron Rodgers! Give him the ball. In fact, tell him that is what you’re planning to do and tell him all the pressure is on his shoulders. He doesn’t care. He already knows that all the pressure is on him. He’s just glad that you came to your senses and glued the ball to his hand. He embraces the challenge without the albatross of any conservative play calling. McCarthy needs to call the plays like Rodgers is the assassin and he is loading his gun. It’s got to be so cold and so fearless that the other team always has a high level of discomfort at the thought of what attack he is going to unveil. Having played and watched a lot of football for over 40 years, I have never seen anyone like him at the quarterback position. There have been many great, incredible, quarterbacks. Montana, Brady, Manning, Elway to name a few. They are all incredible. But, none of them had the upside that Rodgers has. Each one has small downsides that Rodgers doesn’t have. Brady and Manning both lack maneuverability This is an area where he has a decided advantage on them. Yet, they have no decided advantage on him. His turnover ratio is half what the next guy is. This stat alone should get him

into the hall of fame. There was one sequence in the Super Bowl that made me a Rodgers believer. He threw a perfect pass to James Jones, at a critical point in the Super Bowl, and he dropped it. Many, almost every, quarterback would have folded at that moment. It was a deflating moment for Packer fans. But Rodgers worked through it like it was just another day on the job and the Packers prevailed. It was a moment that would have slayed most men, but Rodgers handled it like a gladiator. He has been nothing less than excellent from that time forward, His mechanistic approach to the game is unequaled in my time watching football. Having studied the game for x amount of years, you can see greatness when it is staring you in the face. Rodgers is a rare specimen. He is potentially in the vein of all the greats ever. The greatest testament you can give to him is that no matter where the Packers place, everyone has the feeling that he is still the best. His efficiency trumps everyone else and his superiority quiets his need for Super Bowl validity which usually is the complaint that goes along with his lack of Super Bowl appearances. Steve Young said it best, “Aaron Rodgers is the best player in football and that is probably still an understatement.”

COLLEGE:

TIPS FOR

MANAGING

CREDIT

Piling up debt during your college years is alarmingly easy. Credit card issuers often employ persuasive marketing techniques to get students to open accounts. Once students have credit cards in hand, the temptation is so great that many end up graduating with not only a diploma, but significant consumer debt. That doesn’t mean college students should shun credit cards completely, reports the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Used properly, credit cards can be beneficial in establishing a credit history and in providing aid in emergency situations. And, believe it or not, it’s often easier to get a credit card while you’re still a student. That’s because credit card companies know that once you’ve graduated, Mom and Dad are less likely to come to your aid if you can’t meet the payments. Here’s what CPAs say college students need to know about credit cards. One is enough. There’s little reason for a college student to have more than one credit card. In fact, having too many credit cards can work against you when it comes time to buy a car or rent an apartment. That’s because some lenders may be reluctant to extend additional credit to you out of fear that you’ll run up balances on all your

open credit cards and be unable to meet the payments. Select your credit card wisely. Credit card interest rates and terms vary widely. Look for a card with a low interest rate and no annual fee. To avoid interest charges, you’ll want a card with a grace period of at least 25 days. A grace period lets you avoid finance charges by paying your balance in full before the due date. And be sure to read the fine print covering fees for late payments, exceeding your credit limit, cash advances, and overseas transactions. Be wary of low teaser rates. Some credit cards have low introductory rates that jump sharply after three or six months. On other offers, lower introductory rates apply only to balances you transfer from another credit card. And beware -some credit card issuers will raise your rate if you’re late on a payment. Don’t charge what you can’t pay back EACH MONTH. Except when absolutely necessary, you should never charge more than you will be able to pay back when the bill arrives. Before charging a purchase, think it through. If you are not able to afford the purchase now, chances are you won’t be able to afford it in a month when the credit card bill arrives. Lay low with your credit limit. A low credit line limits the amount of credit you have access to and helps to remove the temptation to overspend. Should you receive a congratulatory letter raising your credit limit, call the credit card issuer and decline the offer. Avoid cash advances WHENEVER possible. Many card issuers impose both finance charges and transaction fees for cash advances. Unlike charge purchases, interest on a cash advance is normally charged from the transaction date and the cash advance fee may be as high as 2.5 percent of the amount taken. Protect your account number. Don’t give your account number out over the Internet or elsewhere unless you initiated the transaction. Keep separate from your card a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, and the phone numbers for each issuer. Contact them immediately if your credit card is lost or stolen. Be sure that you open credit card bills promptly and check for unauthorized transactions or billing errors. If you see fraudulent activity, notify your issuer immediately. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT. CPAs suggest that you check your credit report at least once a year to be sure it is accurate. What’s in your credit report can determine whether you can get a car loan, rent an apartment, or even get hired for a job. The Wisconsin Institute of CPAs is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,200 members in public accounting, industry, government and education.

Youve Got The Job Interview, Now What? 8 Ways To Prepare From A Career Coach When it comes to landing the job of your dreams, there are so many ways to go wrong in your efforts – including deciding on the right career path, says career coach Lisa Quast. “A few years ago, many professionals were happy simply to have a job as we slowly recovered from the economic meltdown of 2008-2009, which signified years of an ‘employer’s market,’ ” she says. “But in 2015, employees have more options, including more jobs in their field, and many are considering other fields, too.” Whether you’re just out of college or looking for a better deal with another company, landing an interview takes work. Once you’ve earned that interview, you don’t want to mess it up. Quast, author of the book “Secrets of a Hiring Manager Turned Career Coach: A Foolproof Guide to Getting the Job You Want Every Time” (www.careerwomaninc. com), briefly reviews eight ways to make the interview a success. • Anticipate interview questions and prepare answers. There are five groups of questions you should consider for the interview: your background; familiarity with the field/industry; your functionality and competency for key aspects of the job; your style and personality; and how you see your future. It’s helpful to think about questions the hiring manager might ask and prepare how you could respond. • Prepare questions for the employer. Good questions indicate to hiring managers that you know what you’re talking about. Consider questions about the character of the company; the history, nature and future prospect of the open position; and the department. • Conduct practice interviews. The more you do something, the easier it gets, and practice runs will not only help your interview performance but also help you consider further the content or substance of the discussion. Conduct mock interviews with someone you trust. And when you get to the interview, remember to be yourself and don’t be afraid to show your personality. Companies hire real people, not robots. • Prepare to answer the toughest interview questions. One of the hardest questions to answer is “What’s your biggest weakness?” For interviewers, how you answer this offers insight into your level of self-awareness; how you handle obstacles; and how much you know about the position. • Practice watching the hiring manager’s nonverbal cues for important clues. People say plenty while not verbally saying anything. Facial expression, eye contact, posture and gestures tend to work together for an overall impression. What are these cues telling you? The answer could help you overcome challenging moments in the interview. • Learn to close the interview with class. You can do just about everything right and miss a key point: Don’t forget to ask the hiring manager about the next step in the interview process! When friends ask whether or not you got the job, how would you know what to say if an interviewer doesn’t tell you what’s next and you never ask? • Ensure all documents are ready for the interview. Preparedness says so much in an interview. It’s better to have documents and not need them than vice versa. Have multiple copies of your resume and reference list. Recommendation letters may not be required, Quast says, but they’re good “leave behind” documents. Other items that will either be necessary or useful include the job description, portfolio of your work, paper and pen. • Dress for positive impact. The dot-com era ushered in a more casual approach, but the recession brought back a more “dress for success” style. Dress appropriately for the position and also the geography. For example, a jet-black pantsuit in Florida during August will make you uncomfortable and make you look out of place. Match your attire with the image of the company.
