discGOLF

A 70’s TRADITION STILL PLAYING OUT

By: David Louis

Disc golf is played much like traditional ball golf. But instead of a ball and clubs, players use a plastic flying disc, or commonly known as a Frisbee. The sport, invented in the 1970’s, is the same as ball golf with the goal being to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes or throws. A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is commonly known in as a “pole hole”. As the golfer plays down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. This is called the “lie”. Another major difference between disc golf and ball golf is the course itself. Whereas traditional ball golf courses are vast open areas of groomed grass disc golf can be, and often is, played in rough terrain and even densely wooded areas. Trees, shrubs, and extreme terrain changes in and around fairways create interesting and challenging obstacles for the disc golfer. To finish each hole, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. The score is tallied by counting up all the “throws” on that hole, then adding them up with all the other holes on the course for a total score. The player with the lowest score, or number of throws, is the winner. Disc golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of athletic ability or background. One doesn’t have to be financially well off either to participate in disc golf. It cost nothing to play on almost all disc golf courses which are located mostly in public parks throughout the country. The equipment used can be minimal consisting of, as little as, one plastic golf disc or as many discs as one is willing to carry. The price of a disc is in the $10 range. A golf disc is smaller and heavier than a traditional Frisbee which allows it to fly farther. Because of their unique design, these discs require a different throwing technique than a traditional Frisbee which takes a few throws to get used to. Most disc golf courses are roughly a mile in length, which makes the game accessible to people of all ages and physical capacity. Here in Southeastern Wisconsin, there are many courses within as little as a one hour drive from Milwaukee with some of the best courses located right in our area. The Mach 2 disc golf basket is an excellent entry-level outdoor disc golf basket for the backyard, schools, colleges or any recreational course. The Mach II galvanized coating provides a major increase in durability over powder coated or zinc plated metal finishes and is the perfect practice basket for outdoor permanent use.

THE JOKER

Six Flags Great America’s 15th and First Ever Free-Fly Roller Coaster

TO UNLEASH COMPLETE CHAOS IN 2017

Six Flags Great America, the Thrill Capital of the Midwest, and Warner Bros Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, announce plans for its 15th and most maniacal roller coaster to date, the all-new free-fly coaster, THE JOKER. This insanely twisted chaos coaster will be a massive new centerpiece in the Yankee Harbor section of the park, next to BATMAN The Ride roller coaster. “We are excited to continue our partnership with the DC brand as it continues to resonate well with our guests. THE JOKER is undeniably one of the greatest SuperVillains of all time,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America park president. “This free-fly coaster will perfectly capture the essence of the warped and unpredictable nature of THE JOKER. It will take our park to the next level of thrills.”

After being lifted straight up a 12-story, 90-degree hill, the free-fly coaster will wreak havoc as riders flip head-over-heels at least six times along the weightless journey. Thrill seekers will experience exhilarating leaps and dives along a horizontal plane with unexpected drops as they tumble from one level to the next. The wing seats amp up the pandemonium since riders will experience this wild adventure with no track above or below ─ just the sky, ground and plenty of sinister thrills. The unique design of THE JOKER features: Massive, imposing, floating and twisting I-box track frame in a unique two-tone design; One-of-a-kind onboard magnetic technology featuring smooth head-over-heels free-fly flips providing guests the feeling of weightlessness as they soar outside the confines of a traditional track; 4-D wing vehicles that seat up to 8 per vehicle with a total of 5 vehicles; Face-off seats that allow riders to face each other as they tumble head over heels; A 120-foot-tall, 90-degree hill that is ascended by an elevator-style, chain link lift; and Two beyond 90-degree “raven” drops giving the sensation of free-falling. THE JOKER is expected to unleash total mayhem beginning in the spring of 2017, and join the ranks of all a long line of legendary roller coasters at Six Flags Great America. Six Flags Great America is also announcing the start of 2017 Season Pass sales with its special Flash Sale through Labor Day weekend featuring the best deal of the year – savings up to 70% off on 2017 Passes! September 1 through September 5, guests will receive a free upgrade to a Gold Season Pass with every Pass purchased. Gold Season Passes include admission to both Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor, and any other Six Flags theme park, as well as free parking and special admission for friends. 2017 Season Passes provide unlimited visits to Fright Fest® at Six Flags Great America in 2016 and all of 2017. Passholders may also purchase a Premium Season Dining Pass, which includes a lunch, dinner, and snack during every park visit, plus they will receive a 2017 All Season Sport Bottle for unlimited drink refills. NEWS

“UW-Madison students are leaders in caring about the world around them, and the turnout rates are one example of that,” July, Chancellor Rebecca Blank officially accepted that challenge. “UW-Madison has a long and proud tradition of active, democratic engagement,” said Kathy Cramer, Morgridge Center for Public Service Director and professor of political science. “Participating in this challenge reaffirms our commitments to ensuring that a college education helps prepare people for great citizenship.” Though launched amidst a presidential campaign, the Challenge is not a shortterm initiative. But the upcoming election has offered college campuses, including UW-Madison, the opportunity to take a closer look at student civic engagement and voting. According to the National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement, 53% of eligible UW-Madison students voted in the last presidential election, in 2012. This puts UW-Madison well ahead of the national student voter average of 46.9%. And UW-Madison students aren’t just interested in the presidential elections. In the 2014 midterm elections, 35.5% of UW students voted, nearly double the national average of 18.8%. “UW-Madison students are leaders in caring about the world around them, and the turnout rates are one example of that,” said Cramer. “The Morgridge Center for Public Service is very proud to help this tradition thrive.” But Cramer and other campus leaders believe even more can be done. As part of the Challenge, UW-Madison was required to draft an action plan that included initiatives, events and commitments to increasing student voting and civic engagement. The Morgridge Center and Professor Cramer led the efforts to compile an action plan. UW-Madison’s action plan identifies 20 specific initiatives that are either ongoing or have been developed specifically ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Though certainly many dozens (if not hundreds) of additional efforts are underway across campus. Highlights include: Vote.wisc.edu – A one-stop website for student voting information Election Day residence hall signage directing students to their proper voting locations Voter registration efforts through the Student Vote Coalition and student vote ambassadors sponsored by the Andrew Goodman Foundation The infrastructure for students to receive print-out voter IDs right at their specific polling locations on Election Day A Voter Enrollment Verification short link created by the Registrar’s Office to help students easily prove enrollment when presenting a UW-issued voter ID Early Voting locations on campus, including Union South and the Student Activity Center Following Election Day in November, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge will collect data from participating schools and then dole out awards based on student voter participation. One school among the highest participating will be named the champion of the challenge. OCTOBER 2016 the RED xpress

SPORTS Gameday’s Best Tailgate Join us 2½ hours before kickoff, every football home game, for gameday’s best tailgate. Just steps from Camp Randall Stadium at Union South, Badger Bash offers food, drinks and entertainment—indoors and out. The Union has been hosting the family-friendly Badger Bash for more than 40 years. This event is free, open to the public and we welcome our opponents’ fans, too. The more, the merrier!

Badger Bash Takes Fandom to New Levels of Fun

Badger Bash Features: • Director Mike Leckrone and the full UW Marching Band • UW Spirit Squad performances • Local celebrity emcees • Live music with The Northern Hooks • Kid zone inflatables • Fun & games by our sponsors • Free admission and open to the public

There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a Wisconsin football game… the smell of grilling brats, the sea of red cheering for its favorite team and the sounds of the Wisconsin Marching Band all blend together to represent the camaraderie and spirit of Badger Football. What if there is a way to experience the atmosphere of Camp Randall even if you don’t have tickets? Badger Bash is your answer. As the official tailgate of UWMadison, there’s no better way to celebrate game day. The festivities start with a full performance from the iconic University of Wisconsin Marching Band parading around the outdoor plaza at Union South. Michael Leckrone, legendary Director of the Marching Band, leads the band in playing all the classic game time songs. Instead of hearing Buttercup from across a football field, Badger Bash attendees bump up right next to the band. Outside of Camp Randall, nowhere are there as many Badgers from so many walks of life as Union South does during Badger Bash. Students and alumni, old and young, locals and out-of-towners all join together to celebrate the Badgers before they make their way to the greens of the football field, and Badger Bash hosts the celebrations with free and fun activities for everyone.

The Voice: TIME IS RIGHT FOR A BYE BREAK FROM JUGGERNAUT WILL BENEFIT BADGERS DOWN STRETCH by Matt Lepay Given the challenge of the Badgers’ football schedule, this appears to be the perfect time for a bye week. A chance for the players to recharge, and then have a few extra days to prepare for Ohio State. Coach Paul Chryst plans to use the time in a similar fashion as he did prior to the season opener against LSU. They will hit the practice field Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The players will get away until Sunday evening, then it is onto another game week. Some extra work could come in handy before the Buckeyes roll into town. The first two Big Ten opponents fit into the category of Old School. There are wrinkles, but generally speaking both Michigan and Michigan State love to pound the ball to set up the pass. Like the Badgers, they like to use a fullback. Ohio State can be a bit different. Make no mistake, the Buckeyes can be physical. However, when people describe Urban Meyer’s team, the first word you are likely to hear is speed. Actually, two words — speed and talent. What OSU lacks in experience, it seems to make up for with those two terms. Offensively, the Buckeyes appear to be very good at getting opposing defenses to play in space, resulting in tough one-on-one matchups. Miss a tackle, and it is trouble. They do have experience at quarterback. J.T. Barrett has started 21 games, and last week became the school’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 59. Defensively, there is a grand total of one senior listed on the depth chart. That said, the OSU defense pitched a shutout last week against Rutgers. Through four games, it has given up only 37 points, 24 of those to Oklahoma. Yet, the Badgers have played the more challenging schedule. They have won four of their first five. Sure, Michigan’s kickers had trouble hitting field goals, but there is no doubt the Badgers would love to have a handful of plays back as well. In the passing game, big plays were there to be had. Make a couple of those plays, and the game easily could have changed. That is how football works. The previous week, Michigan State was in good position to drive down the field and tie the game in the third quarter. Then the Badgers forced a fumble, and Leo Musso returned it 66 yards to the end zone. The game changed. Next week, the circus will come to town. Barring a loss to Indiana (it should be noted the Hoosiers have given OSU trouble in recent years), the Buckeyes will arrive in Madison ranked no lower than second in the nation, and talk will increase of Meyer’s team returning to the College Football Playoff. We also will hear about the last time these two teams met, and how Ohio State hammered Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game. Yet there is a lot to like about these Badgers. Through five games, they have served notice that they are not so bad either. And there is a decent chance they will spend next to no time being concerned about a game two years ago. This group seems to be focused on the here and now. How to continue to improve, and how to do everything they can to avoid the feeling they had on the ride home from Ann Arbor. As a Badgers football fan, this is a good time to recharge yourself. Be ready, because the push resumes next week. OCTOBER 2016 the RED xpress

OPINIONS

An Open Letter to

Paul McCartney By Anonymous

Let me preface this letter by saying you could easily be considered the greatest musician in the history of man. Your library of recorded music is far and away the best out there. As part of the most influential band in the history of recorded music, you were arguably the best of the group. The only people who don’t like any of the Beatles catalog are either those who don’t know their listening to it or those who haven’t heard it. You have too many great songs for a listener not to like some of it. Having said all that, you need to put on a better live show. It feels like you’re more in love with the response from the crowd, than putting out a quality vocal performance. Great singers really only care about the quality of their vocal performance. They love to sing and can always wring a great performance even out of old, stale songs. It seems like you sing with more ego than passion. The crowd’s going to love you no matter how horrible the performance is so there shouldn’t be much satisfaction in a great crowd reaction. Two singers come that come to mind when I think of quality – Paul Rodgers and James Taylor. They are craftsmen, artisans. Although they each sing different genres of music, they are always soulful and on key. Neither of them sing it like the record, but both can improvise, live and stay on key. There are a handful of singers in this league. This is the gold standard for vocal performers. You have to prove that you can pull it off vocally live. You need to go back and reconnect with the old recordings. You need to put down your ego and admit that your live performance is only mediocre. Give the people what they want – the belief you can do no wrong and your voice is as pure as it is on those recordings. I believe this is a matter of effort, not ability. You need to cement your legend and put out one tour where the vocals are flawless. Work, like you’ve never worked before, and put us in awe of everything that is you. We want to be in that state because we so believe in the magic of your studio recordings and the greatness that is you. You have to approach this like a professional athlete and be disciplined down to the note. This will satisfy everyone’s perceived image of you and will generally mesmerize us. You must listen to the old recordings and remember and reconnect with the magic that made them so flawless and heart felt. It is obvious that you are very disconnected from your legendary material. If you want the ultimate ego rush, have us amazed at the vocal performance you can still provide. We want you t o show everyone that the competition is only for second place because you are so far in first.

SOLID CAREER CHOICES 2017 Contrary to popular belief there are a multitude of job openings in a variety of fields especially for those with a college degree. The difference between now and year’s passed is that today’s employer may be seeking individuals with more than an undergrad degree. The fields with the most promise haven’t changed much in recent years with computer technology being red hot as always. Anything computer is sure to be profitable with programming and network design leading the way. Demand for website design seems to be slightly on the decline because of the glut of would-be designers. Nurses are in high demand because of hospital’s need to cut costs. Nurses are now doing far more than they did in previous years, because they are cheaper to pay than doctors. This doesn’t mean nurses don’t get paid well. The starting salary for many nurses is around $50,000 and if you are interested in high paying part time work, there are employment agencies that will pay as much as $50/hour and provide medical benefits even for part time workers. On a similar note, paralegals fill the same need in the world of law. Paralegals are performing many tasks that lawyers did in the old days because they are paid a fraction of the price. Veterinarians are always in high demand and are listed by the Better Business Bureau as one of the most bankable professions with the least amount of financial risk. Many vets are making over $100,000. Human resource professionals will be big because of the recent trend of changing jobs every few years. Companies will be looking for people with a keen eye for talent. This is no longer considered a “throw away” job at most companies because the turnover is so high that companies need to find someone who can spot a long term employee. For the entrepreneurs among us, information technology is huge. This is one of the big businesses of the future. Being able to provide businesses with huge mailing lists and other researched information about consumers and other businesses will continue to be a very hot field. Many predict that business will soon find a way to send effective spam mail that is not considered an annoyance because it is well targeted. This will take competent research and should provide some great opportunities for the industrious entrepreneur. Coffee shops will continue to be big business for the person who is interested in being self employed. Coffee has been huge business for the last several years and there is no slow down cited in the future. Another less glamorous but high paying entrepreneurial venture is toner refilling. This business should absolutely explode in the years to come with profit margins of 3-400 percent on every refill. And a job definitely not to forget is Ebay seller. People are making a bundle doing this and there is no reason why this profession will slow down at all. Because Ebay is getting a little crowded and competitive, it will take a savvy thinker to come up with the right products to sell. A field to avoid in the upcoming years is teacher. By 2010, the education system will be in complete disarray and many traditional teachers will be looking for a job. Also, the nature of the school system will be seeing some huge changes that may or may not benefit salaries. Web design may be another field to stay away from. As software gets better and better and the market continues to flood, watch for rates to plummet as the marketplace forces a downward spiral. OCTOBER 2016 the RED xpress 11
