The popular FXX show ”It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” was renewed last year for three more seasons, meaning three more years of shenanigans with the gang. FXX’s original comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is back for an 11th season, so get ready for more misguided dreams leading to blundered schemes from everyone’s favorite bar owners! The Gang returns to Paddy’s Pub with Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny Devito). Last season, the gang crushed Wade Boggs’ cross-country flight drinking record, killed Mac’s dad, and started a cult. This season, the gang gets involved in even more insane adventures including a move to the suburbs, shooting a smut film, defending themselves in court, and playing another deranged round of the legendary board game Chardee MacDennis. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was created by Rob McElhenney. He also serves as executive producer along with Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Tom Lofaro, Scott Marder, and David Hornsby. The show is produced by FX Productions. Jordan Johnson of the Milwaukee men’s basketball team has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The honor is the second of the junior guard’s career, with both coming in the past three weeks. Johnson was everywhere in the victory over Minnesota Dec. 23, coming up just one rebound short of a triple-double when he finished with 19 points, 10 assists and nine boards. Had he been able to grab one more rebound, it would have marked the fourth triple-double all-time in program history and the first since Kaylon Williams put up 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over Butler January 4, 2011. 4 WAYS TO SPOT YOUR WEAKNESSES WITH 10 SIMPLE FITNESS FIXES THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR WORKOUTS If you were a Hollywood celeb or star athlete, you wouldn’t have to think about your workout. You could pay big money to hire a world-class trainer to do that for you. But if you’re like most of us, you are the person in charge of your lifting plan – choosing your exercises, setting goals for sets and reps, and figuring out how to cram it all into the limited free time you have to hit the gym. So how do you design a workout that best meets your needs? Thankfully, it’s easier than you think. The following series of simple moves will help you determine your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know the areas where your body is powerful (and where it needs work), you can choose exercises to help you reach your fitness goals. Self-Assessments: Your Starting Point Whether you’re a seasoned workout warrior or gym newbie, it’s important to understand how well your body performs the most basic of motions: bodyweight squats, pushups, overhead reaches and lunges. These moves will tell you a lot about how stable and how mobile you are. If you’re stable, you’re in control. If you’re mobile, you have the range of motion to perform exercises with proper form. If you’re wobbly, shaky or just can’t fathom how your hips could ever sink into a squat, you’ve just discovered an area for improvement. Assessment 1: Body-weight Squat The Test: Stand facing a wall with your legs a little more than shoulder width apart. Descend into a squat. Keep your torso upright, with your knees tracking over your toes. If you fall forward or your knees buckle inward, you’ve got a problem. Either your ankles, hips or upper back don’t have enough flexibility to perform the squat, or your core doesn’t have the strength to remain upright. The Fix: To address mobility issues in your lower body, you want to open up your hips with exercises such as striders. You can also improve flexibility in your upper back by performing thoracic extensions on a foam roller. Lastly, you should do some planks to strengthen your core. Striders: Start in a pushup position with your legs, glutes and upper back tight. Lift your right leg and bring your right foot to the outside or your right hand. Return to the starting position and repeat on the left side. Keep your entire body in a straight line during the movement – don’t let your hips drop. Perform up to three sets of eight to 12 repetitions for each leg. Thoracic Extensions: Lie with a foam roller underneath your back about halfway between your shoulders and hips. Your hips should touch the ground. Tuck your chin but do not stretch your neck, and keep your hips pressed against the ground as you extend over the foam roller as far as you can. Then bring your chin back upward, as if you were doing crunches. Perform two sets of eight to 12 extensions. Plank: Start either on your hands in a typical pushup position or on your forearms if you find the pushup position too challenging. Tense all of the muscles in your body, including your back, core, glutes and lower legs. Hold this position for one to two minutes. Do up to four sets. Assessment 2: Push-Ups The Test: Set up in the top of a pushup with your arms locked. Lower yourself with control, tucking your elbows in toward your sides. Bend your elbows to 90 degrees, then reverse the movement and drive back upwards to the starting position.
Perform 10 repetitions, paying particular attention to the following: Does your back remain straight? Were your shoulders wobbly? Did your elbows flare outward? If so, your triceps are weak or you don’t have proper engagement in your core and back to perform the exercise. The Fix: If the problem was in your core, the fix is simple – add planks to your workout. If the instability felt rooted in your shoulders, try face pulls, which strengthen the shoulder retractors and external rotators. And if your elbows flared outward, dumbbell military presses will help. Face Pulls: At a cable resistance machine, position a two-handled rope at the highest setting. Grab each end of the rope with an overhand grip and take a step back so that you feel tension on the rope. Your feet can be together or you can use a split-leg stance. Keep your posture straight as you pull each end of the rope in straight line toward your face. Use a lower weight for this exercise and focus on form. Do up to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions. Dumbbell Military Press: Stand with a dumbbell in each hand, held at shoulder height. Engage your torso so that your abs, lats and even legs are all supporting you as you push both dumbbells upwards. Your arms should be fully extended at the top. Lower the weights back to your shoulders and repeat. Perform up to four sets of six to12 reps. Assessment 3: Overhead Reach he Test: Stand upright with your feet parallel and positioned about shoulder width apart. Your hands should be at your sides with your palms facing inward. Engage your core – don’t let your ribs flare out -- and lift your arms forward, drawing a halfcircle in front of you until your hands are over your head, your arms are straight and your thumbs are pointing behind you. Keep your back straight, and don’t let your lower back hyperextend. If you are unable to reach fully overhead, it’s an indication of poor upper back mobility, a weak core and even potential issues in your hips. The Fix: This assessment goes hand in hand with the squat assessment, and tells you a lot about your shoulder mobility and posture overall. Many lifters have internally rotated or slouched shoulder posture, which the overhead reach will point out immediately. If your shoulder flexibility is less than you’d like, address it with shoulder stretches on a squat rack. For mobility problems in your back, try some foam roller work. Lastly, use squat-to-stands to fix any issues in your hips. Shoulder Stretches: Find a squat rack or power cage, bend your arm 90 degrees at your elbow and place your forearm against one of the racks. Turn your torso away from your arm. Keep your trunk in a neutral position with your shoulders and hips parallel as you turn. You should feel a stretch in the front of your shoulders and across your chest. Repeat on the other side. Hold each stretch for 10 to 15 seconds. Do three to four sets. Foam Roller: Roll back and forth on the foam roller, working out any tightness in your middle to upper back. Roll for 30 to 60 seconds, and do up to three sets. Then turn to your side, keeping the foam roller perpendicular to your torso, and roll out your triceps and lats. Move slowly and deliberately, taking deep breaths whenever you feel discomfort. Repeat the routine on your other side. Squat-to-Stands: Grab the tops of your toes while trying to keep your back as straight as possible. Squat down, driving your knees toward the outside of your arms. Continue to hold on to the tops of your feet as you extend your hips back up. When you feel tension in your hamstrings or glutes, lower yourself back down. Repeat this pattern for up to two sets of eight to 12 repetitions.Assessment 4: Lunges The Test: Start by standing upright and take a step forward with your right leg. Plant your right foot squarely on the ground, shifting most of your weight into your right heel. Lower your body, keeping your torso erect until both your back leg and front leg are bent at 90 degree angles. Your back foot should be up on your toes, and your left knee should just barely be touching the floor. Stay in control as you step forward with your left foot, bringing it directly alongside your right leg. Repeat on the other side. Throughout the routine, your hands can either be at your sides or pressed together in front of your chest. If you have a tendency to shift side to side, or your front knee is falling forward of your toes, it indicates immobile hips or ankles. The Fix: Work on the mobility of your ankles with a simple ankle mobility drill. Ankle Mobility Wall Drill: Stand about one foot away from a wall with your feet flat. Keep your heels down, and drive your right knee forward, trying to touch the wall. Repeat on the other side. Perform eight to 12 repetitions for up to three sets. Hip Thrusts: Your instability on lunges could be an indication of a weakness in your posterior chain -- the backside muscles including your glutes and hamstrings. Because of immobility and misalignment in your hips, your glutes typically don’t work the way they should, which negatively affects your stability. Performing hip thrusts will reactivate your glutes and provide a dynamic stretch on your hips flexors on the front side of your hip. Lie face up with your upper back on a flat bench and your feet flat on the floor. Keeping your torso and head in a straight line, lower your hips toward the floor. Then reverse the movement by powerfully contracting the glutes and thrusting your hips upward, extending your hips until your knees, hips and torso are in a straight line. D E W E N RE ABOUT THE SHOW In the third season of the hit NBC drama “The Blacklist,” FBI Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone, “Law & Order: LA”) is now a fugitive and on the run with criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader, “The Office,” “Boston Legal”). As they struggle to stay one step ahead of their former colleagues, and Liz immerses herself in Red’s underworld of disreputable contacts and covert operations, will the list of this season’s new Blacklisters play a key role in their survival or their demise? Liz is on an unpredictable journey of self-discovery, and all the pieces of her life, including her indefinable relationship with Tom (Ryan Eggold, “90210,” “Lucky Them”), will be drastically challenged as she continues to believe Red holds all the answers. Jon Bokenkamp (“The Call,” “Taking Lives”), John Eisendrath (“Alias”), John Davis (“Predator,” “I, Robot,” “Chronicle”), John Fox and Michael Watkins (“The XFiles”) serve as executive producers. “The Blacklist” is a production of Sony Pictures Television and Davis Entertainment. nbc.com/the-blacklist

Uwm Libraries Welcome Paramount Music, History Collection By UWM News Donors have given the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Music Library two limited-edition boxed sets chronicling the rise and fall of Paramount Records, a Wisconsin-based record company that preserved rare musical recordings of early 20th century pioneers of blues, jazz and gospel. The sets, purchased and donated by local music and art lovers, will be unveiled at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at the Golda Meir Library, 2311 E. Hartford Ave., room E281. The unveiling celebration will include a guitar performance by Gabriel Andrews, who earned his master’s degree in music at UWM. He will be playing the music of Paramount recording artists, as well as other selections. “These boxed sets are a significant addition to the musical world because they preserve for the future a large volume of music that was thought lost to history and the vagaries of lack of foresight,” said Rebecca Littman, music librarian. UWM is one of the few circulating libraries in the world that now has copies of both boxed sets available to music researchers and students. The boxed sets were compiled and released through rock star Jack White’s Third Man Records in partnership with Revenant Records, founded by the late guitarist John Fahey.

snowboarding for beginners
Freestyle is for someone who wants to do it all, go forward, or backward, ride on powdered or hard pack snow, go in the air or stay on the ground. As winter approaches we all start getting into our sedentary lives. Wisconsin weather seems to put us down and keep us indoors. Through the winter you may notice a few pounds gained as you slide into complete boredom. It’s time to bundle up and put yourself into gear. Snowboarding is gaining more popularity each year. Get a rush as you slide down a mountain on powdered snow, when reaching the bottom you’ll find your desire to go again and again is quit real. Here are some helpful tips to get you started:
10 the Panther xpress January 2016
For your first time, you might want to consider taking lessons. An instructor will help you learn much faster and show you how to gear up, (showing you what you need to start) maneuvering with the board, safety tips, ect. You will probably be not as sore the next day. Next, you’ll want to decide what to do about gear.. You will need a board, footgear, and bindings. You can either buy or rent. This should be determined on how much time you are going put into the sport. Is this something you will stay committed to or just a fun thing to try? Before purchasing gear, you need to decide on what riding style you would like to do. There are four basic styles: Technical Freestyle, Freestyle, Freeriding, and Freecarving/Alpine. Technical Freestyle is for individuals interested in spins, getting big air, and tricks. Freestyle is for someone who wants to do it all, go forward, or backward, ride on powdered or hard pack snow, go in the air or stay on the ground. Freeriding is for a person who would like to stay on the ground and great for beginners learning the sport. Freecarving/Alpine is for an individual who is into speed, fast and extreme boarding carving the snow leaving deep tracks as you piece through the snow. This is not for someone who wants to do tricks. Now after picking your style you want to make sure your gear is compatible. For those who Technical Freestyle, Freestyle, or Freeride use what they call “soft boot’s” and use a high binding with two-three straps. Freecarving/Alpine use “hard boot,” with a plate binding. The bindings that snowboarders use are unlike ski binding because they are not made to release when you fall. Which board you will be using is determined on your weight, which style you choose to ride with and the snow conditions. You stance is next in learning how to snowboard. This depends on which you’re comfortable with. If you tend to put your left foot forward , you are known as having a regular stance. But if you end up being more comfortable with your right foot forward, that is called a goofy-stance. You should choose which foot to put forward depending on your balance. Snowboarding is about balance, and stopping, turning and falling. When its your first time, bend your knees and try to distribute your weight over the board. To help go in a straight direction, put your dominant foot forward. To slow down, you should lean back on your heels; learn to balance while doing so. You will need to know how to stop once you reach the bottom of the mountain. Act like your snow>>page 13

The Truth “SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DEAL WITH THE TRUTH” -DR. PHIL
B.D. Louis No matter what you think about Dr. P, this is right on. Although his brand of pop psychology can be trivial and over simplified, he hit the nail on the proverbial head with this one. Whoever he stole this line from should be revered as saying something that is in the same league with the theory of relativity and the serenity prayer. Defining success is fairly relative. A generally successful person is comfortable in their own skin and lot in life. Financial achievement is a part of it as well, as contentedness and garnering a positive feeling from those around them. It is a simplistic summation, but good enough for this discussion. Most importantly, successful people are generally more interesting which, in turn, is a big factor in their success. The reason for this is they are not bound to the same pool of small minded topics that are intellectually unstimulating and, for the most part, boring. Talk of the children, office politics and other mundane subjects are done as a social nicety but their real interest lies in the core reality of what makes us tick. This is why someone such as Oprah is so popular and successful. They are also interested in others which is surprisingly rare. Most people have no interest in anyone else’s life and this selfishness is usually translated into failure. They would be surprised to learn that having a genuine interest in other people would make them more successful. Successful people are willing to discuss subjects that may not cast them in the best light but could bring about a robust, interesting conversation. They do not perpetrate the same monotonous discussion about how water is not wet, how their kid who is in jail is really misunderstood or how cheating on their spouse is justifiable. They know this inane banter is a waste of an intelligent mind and discussing such nonsense is unexciting and generally a waste of time. Also, they know that taking such moronic positions will jeopardize people’s trust in their mental capabilities in the future. To successful people, the truth is neither good or bad. For them, there is very little fear in looking at things in a simple, straight forward, truthful manner. Truth is seldom ugly or unpleasant because it is what it is. To a successful person, dealing in fairy tales is simply bad time management and generally a waste of time. A very successful person does not care how the truth reflects on them. It is simply easier and more efficient to deal in what is as compared to what they would like to believe. Obviously, truth is relative and in the eye of the beholder but successful people
FRAME & FABRIC
do not deny their own truth. They’ve come to grips with their humanness and realize that they are fallible, paradoxical, contradictory and every other negative term that anyone wants to throw at them. They realize they have the same shortcomings everyone else has by the very nature of their standing as an imperfect human being. Because of this, they seem almost impervious to criticism and welcome feedback, good or bad, about how they are perceived by others because it helps to complete a picture of their standing in the world. They have no concern of the positive or negative comments but only about the quality and sincerity of the person making the commentary. The truth is a helpful tool that helps them improve and move on. It is not something to be feared but something to learn from. It cannot be stated enough that truly successful people do not look at the truth in a positive or negative light. It serves only to help in decision making and to get an outside snapshot of themselves so they can modify the way in which they deal with the outside world. Unfortunately, most people live in denial. They do not want to face the truth because it somehow makes them feel inadequate and like a failure. As a person climbs the ladder of life they find the biggest difference between people at the bottom and top is the truth. People at the bottom are constantly defending the indefensible and wasting time promoting positions that they themselves really don’t believe. They are so concerned about how the truth makes them look that they are willing to hold themselves back to defend these positions. This seemingly ridiculous behavior is present in all of us but gradually minimized by the more successful. As the success ladder is being climbed, it becomes more and more truthful. Successful people quickly tire of those who live in a “pie in the sky” reality. They get left behind in favor of those with practical and useful visions. The non-truthers are bogged down to such a degree that they have a very small chance of ever becoming successful. Defending the indefensible and promoting the idiotic positions becomes a part of their life strategy and is dragged around like an old ball and chain. It literally takes away any chance of success. Dealing with the truth is a large in factor in the someone’s success. It is usually fairly obvious why some people succeed and others fail. It generally doesn’t come down to luck or circumstance (although these factors can certainly make the climb much harder). It could be as simple as good parenting. Who knows what makes some people readily deal with truth while others live in a constant state of denial. Dealing with truth makes life so much easier, simpler and happier. It has that effect on others as well.

Success in Team Sports B.D. Louis Personal responsibility is probably the biggest factor in team sports. As an individual you have to put your ego aside and get the job done. Every member of the group from the team president to the janitor has to be single minded in purpose. Their individual needs are secondary to those of the group. The problem can be that you don’t believe in the group leader and this leads to giving less than 100%. The answer is, you have to buy in fully anyway. You have no choice. You’ve got the leader you’ve got, so, you have to give it 100% to give yourself a shot. You have to be a stoic iron man to succeed at the highest level in team sports. You have to have the assassin mentality to complete the task at hand. As this becomes the group’s way of thinking, the group bonds, can function with great precision and takes less chances that would jeopardize the team. This is wisdom every coach has to impart on their team. “You ain’t doing this for me. Understand that and live it” The concept has to be broached with a little more grace, but eventually needs to sink in. One of the great lessons the coach has to teach their players is personal responsibility. Be physically and mentally ready to meet the needs of the task at hand. Don’t let any excuse stand in the way of getting the job done. The coach’s job is to sell the vision. Their vision is going to carry us to great heights. As the player, your assessment of the vision matters not. You buy in because you understand that it gives you the best chance of success. Teams that have longer runs of success have to have this stoic cohesiveness to weather all the storms associated with the ladder of success. Great players have a certain discipline that may be hard to see but it brings about a certain effect on the team. When you get a group these type of players you can have team success for a long period of time.

Panthers Set To Post Another Perfect APR Score mkepanthers.com The Milwaukee men’s basketball team has been notified that it will post a perfect Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000 when the NCAA officially releases the information to the public in the spring. The perfect single-year score will mark the second in a row for head coach Rob Jeter’s squad. “The hard work the team is putting in continues to show in our APR score,” Jeter said. “We are proud of what we have accomplished and continue to accomplish when it comes to the work that is getting done in the classroom and the changes that have been made.” The back-to-back elite scores have moved Milwaukee’s four-year average to 962. In addition, the current roster of the men’s team posted a 3.014 GPA last semester.
Technically, the APR is calculated by having each scholarship player count for one point per semester for remaining eligible and another for remaining in the program. Four More Records Fall As Panthers Wrap Up Iowa INVITEBARSON, MENNINGA, ROZEBOOM ALL SET NEW RECORDS IN FINAL DAY OF ACTION mkepanthers.com Four more records were broken as the Milwaukee swimming & diving team wrapped up the final day of the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational Sunday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Panthers posted another 73 season-best times Sunday – capping the three-day meet with an incredible 217 season-best times. Jacob Barson, Ryan Menninga and Shelby Rozeboom all broke freshman records to headline the day, running the total records broken by UWM over the weekend to eight. Barson continued his coming out party Sunday. One day after setting the new freshman record in the 100 breaststroke, the newcomer set not only the freshman record in the 200 breast but also the school record. Barson touched the wall in 2:01.58 in finals – nearly a full second ahead of former Panther Brady Huemann’s mark of 2:02.42 set in 2012. That time is also the fastest in the Horizon League this season by two full seconds. On the women’s side, it was sophomore Natalie O’Connell leading the was in 2:20.25 for 10th overall. Jenn Kordik came in 16th overall in 2:23.60, with senior Hannah Lucas winning the C-final in 2:23.39. Menninga took down the freshman record in the 200 fly with a preliminary time of 1:50.80, taking down Jordan Diel’s previous mark of 1:51.25 from 2009. Menninga finished an impressive seventh overall in finals. Yevgeniy Foster (1:51.73), Anthony Kolbus (1:53.86) and Adriel Huerta (1:56:01) all also swam in finals and did well. In the women’s 200 fly, it was sophomore Maggie Burns leading the way. The Canada native touched the wall in 2:05.66 for 11th overall. Nearly two records fell in the women’s 100 freestyle. Mandie Siehs came in third overall with an outstanding time of 50.30 – by far the fastest time in the Horizon League thus far this season. That time also missed a school record by a mere twohundredths of a second. Meanwhile, Rozeboom did break a record in that event – the freshman mark set by Diana Diel in 2011. Rozeboom touched the wall in 51.46 – the second-fastest time in the league so far this year. Nick Menninga was the leader for UWM on the men’s side, finishing the sprint event in a season-best 45.72 – also one of the fastest times in the league this season. Sara Bentley had yet another strong performance Sunday. The sophomore came in sixth overall in the 200 backstroke with a solid time of 2:01.68 – the fastest league time this year. Junior Kristin Zablocki also posted a strong swim, finishing 15th on the day in 2:04.89. Sophomore Payton teDuits was the leader on the men’s side. The Madison native finished in 1:52.95 for 19th overall, with Kyle Gerum (1:53.95) and Mathew Jansen (1:56.25) close behind. Sunday marked the first time Milwaukee competed in the 1650 free on the season. Senior Max Gatzke (15:49.92) and junior Natalie Johnson (17:07.56) set the bar for the Panther men and women, each taking 10th on the day. UWM wrapped up the meet with two more solid showings in the 400 free relay. On the women’s side, it was Johnson, Rozeboom, Emma Helgeson and Siehs combining for a time of 3:26.68 for seventh on the day. Meanwhile, Tim Halverson, Erik Wahlgren, Tanner Nimke and N. Menninga came in eighth on the men’s side in a solid 3:03.43. Milwaukee is now off until the turn of the calendar, heading to Florida for its annual training trip in early January before returning to action Jan. 15 against IUPUI.
