How the run got started and history made over a couple beers Not surprisingly, the idea was hatched over a couple of beers in late 1981 by three Badger loyalists at a campus bar. The three, Tom Grantham, Ken Sparks, and Rich Backus, wanted to raise money to support UW Athletics. As admirers of then- Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch, they asked his permission to name it the “Crazylegs Run” in his honor. Tom Grantham continues to serve as General Chairman on the Crazylegs Classic Executive Committee. A Little “Classic” History The first race in 1982 attracted 1,525 runners and raised $9,500. The event grew in popularity and the walk was added in 1987 with 676 walkers the first year. The event has

UWM Breaks Ground On Teaching Garden Linked To Brewing By Matthew Wamser UWM has broken ground on the Hortus Academicus, a garden of trees, bushes and other plants used in brewing as part of UWM’s certificate in the Culture and Science of Fermentation. On Wednesday, May 17, seven trees were planted in the garden behind the Honors College, which will provide ingredients that were used for brewing in ancient times. Peter Sands holds up two of the bushes that were to be planted. Taking part in the groundbreaking for UWM’s new teaching garden are faculty members Mike Darnell (from left), Peter Sands and Bettina Arnold and Kate Nelson, UWM’s chief sustainability officer. It will be several years before the trees bear fruit, like Amere de Berthcourt cider apples and Barnet perry pears. One of the trees will bear medlars, a fruit rarely grown in the United States that was common in ancient and medieval times. “We want this to be a living lab on campus,” said Barry Cameron, associate professor of geosciences and coordinator of the fermentation certificate. “There’s the archaeological component of re-creating ancient beers and ciders. There’s also the component of analyzing the soil to see how it affects plants and fruit.” UWM students designed the garden as part of an architecture and urban planning course. Following the students’ design, the garden will continue to expand as more courses are added to the fermentation certificate.

UWM Joins New $20 Million Institute On Great Lakes Research

d ed U A F p si g b

By Laura Otto UWM’s School of Freshwater Sciences is a partner in a new research institute focused on sustainable management of the Great Lakes. The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research represents a partnership between nine universities across the Great Lakes region, plus nongovernmental organizations and private businesses. CIGLR is led by the University of Michigan and funded with a five-year, $20 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. UWM School of Freshwater Sciences researchers aboard UWM’s Neeskay research vessel take a water sample near downtown. (UWM Photo/Troye Fox) UWM scientists have a longstanding history of collaborative Great Lakes research on topics such as invasive species, harmful algal blooms, and weather and climate. “Restoring and protecting the Great Lakes is one of our generation’s greatest challenges,” said Val Klump, dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences. “This is a vast and rapidly changing system. It takes the efforts researchers from all across the basin to tackle these challenges and to ensure that the actions we take today will accrue long-lasting benefits to our environment, our economy and our quality of life.” The grant is especially welcome news because previous sources of long-term funding for Great Lakes protection are in jeopardy, said Bradley Cardinale, director of the new institute and an ecologist at the University of Michigan. “We are going to expand our research to be more interdisciplinary – in particular, adding social sciences that help us better account for human needs, desires and behaviors in the Great Lakes,” Cardinale said. The Great Lakes comprise the single largest source of freshwater on the planet, representing 90 percent of freshwater in the United States. And 40 million residents in the United States and Canada rely on the Great Lakes for drinking water. Other academic partners include Central Michigan University, Cornell University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of Windsor.

But no matter what the age, everyone at the festival walks around, proudly, with a red mustache. Port Fish Day - Port Washington Catch a bite of the traditional Wisconsin Fish Fry at Port Fish Day in Port Washington. For 41 years, this festival hooks people in for fish and chips, especially since it’s known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Fish Fry,” luring about 50,000 people each year. If your stomach is feeling especially ready to reel in some fish, try your best at the “Smoked Fish Eating Contest.” After a 12-hour day, the event serves about 10,000 pounds of fish and 13,000 pounds of cottage fries. Rendezvous - Prairie Du Chien What makes the food at this Prairie du Chien festival so unique is not just what they serve, but how they serve it. Fry bread, a staple in Native American cuisine, is the most popular dish at this festival, especially since the way it is prepared is incredibly authentic. The cooks are dressed in authentic garb and assemble the bread to your liking in an old fashioned way. The cooks stretch out the dough, pad it down, dip it into grease and throw it on the campfire. The fry bread at this festival can be served with sugar and cinnamon, fruit filling, plain or used to make tacos. Oktoberfest - Chippewa Falls What can be better than ice cream? Try beer and ice cream, two of Wisconsin’s finest food traditions. This fabulous fusion is found once a year at no other time than Oktoberfest in Chippewa Falls. The entrée of choice is Olson’s HOMAID Oktoberfest Ice Cream, which blends Olson’s Ice Cream (flavored with pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon) and Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest beer. They add about 48 ounces of beer to every five gallons of ice cream. Here, you can really grab a “cold one” and mean it with a nice cup of Oktoberfest Ice Cream.
