INGE: READY, SET, B More Than 8 Million Viewers Binge Race Their Favorite Series A new type of fan has emerged on Netflix, and they’re racing to be the first to finish shows like Stranger Things, House of Cards, Fuller House and more. Turns out streaming fast is a new status symbol.

Netflix has changed the way the world engages with stories - viewers watch when, where and how they want, at whatever pace - and in doing so, has given rise to a new kind of fan: the Binge Racer. Accomplishing in a day what takes others weeks to achieve, Binge Racers strive to be the first to finish by speeding through an entire season within 24 hours of its release*.

In total, 8.4 million members have chosen to Binge Race during their Netflix tenure, and the only thing faster than their rate of watching is the rate this behavior continues to grow. Between 2013 and 2016 the amount of launch day finishers increased more than 20 times over.

Whether for the love of one show (five members in the US have raced through all five seasons of House of Cards the day they were released) or the love of many shows (a member in France has already raced through 30 shows this year alone), viewers are embracing this new form of fandom the world over. But exactly where Binge Racers live (hint: everywhere) and what they’re watching (hint: everything) may surprise you.

Shows of all shapes, sizes, genres and formats are revving watchers engines. Sure 30-minute comedies like Master of None, GLOW and Dear White People are raced with speed, but hour-long thrillers, like Stranger Things, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and anime, like The Seven Deadly Sins, are consumed with fervor as well.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life garnered the most global racers in its 24 hour debut (we blame the coffee). But the top spot varies slightly by country: Fuller House reigns supreme in Ecuador, Club de Cuervos scored the no. 1 slot in Mexico, and Marvel’s The Defenders takes the cake (er, The Hand) in Korea.

While Binge Racers are watching fast in pursuit of glory across the globe, Canada clocks in with the highest percentage of 24 hour finishers (we blame the snow). Their binge of choice? None other than national treasure Trailer Park Boys.

FROM CULTURE TO BREWHOPS TO ICE CAVES, FIVE WISCONSIN WINTER ESCAPES

By Pat Dillon Special to TravelWisconsin.com Wisconsin gets high marks for winter getaways that are in the heart of snow-laden woodlands or central to cultural arts and culinary opportunities. Here’s a sampling of five itineraries to take the whole family or get away sans-kids.

Madison: Arts and Culture Tour Art and culture are easily accessed through endless visual or performing arts events. Add the area’s artisan food culture and natural beauty, and enrichment tourism is complete.

The Concourse Hotel, a Madison institution with a fitness room and spa, plus a pool for the kids, is central to the arts hub.

The first Friday of the month is “Free Night Friday” at the WheelHouse Studio in the University of Wisconsin’s Memorial Union where the whole family can craft their own weekend souvenir at no charge. Look into indie and mainstream movie showings at UW Union South; they’re free. Check the schedule at the Overture Center for the Arts for theatrical and musical performances, including Children’s Theater

of Madison. It also hosts free Saturday morning shows for kids. The center houses free art exhibits and is home to the James Watrous Gallery featuring Wisconsin art, and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. At the west end of State Street, The Chazen Museum of Art is a world-class cultural hub.

Visit the Madison Children’s Museum for family fun, then take the crew to the Old Fashioned Tavern & Restaurant for the kind of food that put Wisconsin on the supper-clubbing map. Artisan farm-to-table menus of Graze, Harvest and Heritage are among locavores’ favorites. A stroll down Willy Street (Williamson Street), where boutique shopping is legendary, leads to more eclectic and locally-owned restaurants like Lazy Jane’s, known for scones, the Weary Traveler, That BBQ Joint, or Jamerica and Ha Long Bay for ethnic fare.

Brew-hop Milwaukee’s Craft Beer Taprooms Once famous for its beer barons, “Brew City” is now a go-to spot for craft and micro-brewing— more than 20 and counting! Brew-hop is the new bar-hop and downtown is a good anchor.

Book a room at the boutique Hotel Metro located near several breweries, some that serve food.

Two Milwaukee River-side breweries are Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery and Lakefront Brewery that serves up a Fish Fry and a menu loaded with products from Wisconsin farmers. Nearby Milwaukee Brewing Company only serves their suds, but lets you reserve or walk-in for a tour.

From the Third Ward, grab a meal at the Milwaukee Public Market, tour and eat at the Milwaukee Ale House, or head south to Saint Francis Brewery or Milwaukee’s newest arrivals in the Menomonee Valley, Third Space Brewing and Urban Harvest Brewing.

Renew Spirits in Lake Geneva The luxury of Lake Geneva goes uninterrupted when the temperature drops. Fireside lounges, spa services and year-round specialty shopping make it the perfect winter getaway.

Scores of hotels with spas populate the area. The Grand Geneva, Bella Vista Suites and, the ultra-modern, The Ridge Hotel, or the historic Baker House experience, all offer on-site spa services and lake views. Each mimics lifestyles of the social elite who once resided there. The T.C. Smith Historic Inn offers Greek revival and Italianate, Victorian era-luxury in a more intimate setting.

To book an off-site spa service, consider several day-spas nearby, such as Clearwater Salon and Day Spa, Jasmine Salon and scores of others open year round.

Vampires, werewolves and monsters of all kinds are starring in academic research presentations at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, just in time for Halloween.

Undergraduate students from two programs are sharing their research at a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Monster Conferenceâ&#x20AC;? on Friday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Room 196 of the Honors College, 3363 N. Maryland Ave. The conference is free and open to the public.

Faculty members Meghan Murphy-Lee, senior lecturer in the Russian Department, and Jacqueline Stuhmiller, visiting assistant professor in the Honors College, came up with the idea of having the seven students who volunteered practice their academic presentation skills with a conference tied to the Halloween season.

The classes are extremely popular, and this is the second year the Monster Conference has been held, Stuhmiller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We thought that it would be fun to host an undergraduate research conference so that students could share their ideas with each other and with the public.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;You usually donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to do papers on those kind of topics â&#x20AC;&#x201C; things you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually find in academia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great to do a presentation on something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little bit more fun,â&#x20AC;? said Alisha Engelberger, a sophomore majoring in history and anthropology. Engelberger, who took two of Murphy-Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classes, originally became interested in wizards, vampires and werewolves through television, and is doing her 15-minute presentation on alpha female werewolves.

Bailey Flannery, a junior majoring in English literature who took courses from Stuhmiller, said the conference gives her an opportunity to share her research, which examines portrayals of monstrous women and the fear of female sexual power. Those ideas are expressed in literary characters, going all the way back to the tales of Scylla and Charybdis in the Odyssey, she said.

Krist Schubilske will be talking about how cultural beliefs combined with the physical realities of death and decomposition helped create the concept of the vampire in folklore.

Schubilske, a linguistics major, has taken Murphy-Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classes on vampires and werewolves, and became interested in the stories and traditions that have turned into the spooky elements celebrated in popular culture, especially at Halloween. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I became interested in folklore because folkloric creatures are intrinsically part of the cultures that they are situated in, and can tell us so much about the belief-sets of a given people, how they lived, and what was important to them.â&#x20AC;?

There are also nine for-credit courses, called Ideas Challenge courses, embedded in the curriculum that will land students in the middle of working on their own business-related idea, or someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

The 17-Minute Workout

By Elise Sole Even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not a workout buff, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably heard of HIIT workouts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; aka high-intensity interval training. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comprised of quick bursts of activity followed by short recovery periods. HIIT is the workout du jour for a number of reasons. But in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s busy world, the most appealing one is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seriously efficient, with each workout delivering the benefits of cardio and strength training in a shorter session.

HOW TO DO THIS WORKOUT First, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do five rounds of eight reps of each of the first five exercises. Because the workout is for time (doing as many rounds as you can under a set amount of time), the times of completion can vary per person, however, the goal is to not exceed 10 minutes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a race against the clock,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein. Then youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take a two-minute break before the second part. During that portion, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll set a timer for seven minutes and complete as ma 1 DUMBBELL RENEGADE ROWS â&#x20AC;&#x153;This move is technically meant to strengthen your back,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but because youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using your abdominal muscles to stabilize yourself, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feel it in your core.â&#x20AC;? HOW TO DO IT: Start in a plank position. But instead of resting your palms on the ground youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll grip a set of dumbbells, which will slightly elevate your upper body. Lift one weight to your chest while squeezing your upper back muscles.

Set it down, and then repeat on the other side. Do eight reps on each arm.

2 PUSH-UPS ON DUMBBELLS You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to use the dumbbells for this exercise if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to, says Houssein. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But if you want a deeper range of motion while working your chest and triceps, the weights allow that.â&#x20AC;? HOW TO DO IT: Start in plank position while resting each hand on a dumbbell, then perform classic push-ups. Do eight reps.

3 ROMANIAN DEADLIFTS Get ready for an exercise that targets your entire backside! HOW TO DO IT: While standing, hold a set of dumbbells in front of you with your palms facing your body. Keep your back straight and your legs slightly bent. As you lean forward, push your butt out and keep your weight in your heels. Bend until your shoulders are at hip level. When you feel a deep stretch in your hamstrings, return to starting position.

Do eight reps.

4 BBELL FORWARD LUNGE Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll know youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing this exercise right when you feel a burn in your leading leg, particularly in the thigh, quad and glute muscles, says Houssein. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And make sure your left knee doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go past your toes, otherwise youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll put stress on it.â&#x20AC;? HOW TO DO IT: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding the dumbbells at your shoulders with your elbows pointing out in front of you. Then, with a straight back, step forward with your left foot into a lunge and bend your right knee at a 90-degree angle. Return to standing and repeat on the opposite leg. Do eight reps on each leg.

5 DUMBBELL CURL TO PRESS This move works your biceps and shoulder muscles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And by standing instead of sitting, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also engaging your core,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein. HOW TO DO IT: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart while holding a set of dumbbells at your sides. Curl both weights to your shoulders, and then press them together over your head (with your arms fully extended). Your elbows should be straight and next to your ears. Do eight reps, and then do these first five exercises again.

6 DUMBBELL THRUSTER Warning: This move requires some enthusiasm! â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is one fluid movement where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re thrusting the ground away from you on the way up,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re slow, you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel the proper stimulus and dynamic force of the movement.â&#x20AC;? HOW TO DO IT: Stand holding a set of dumbbells at your shoulders with your elbows pointed out in front of you. Squat down, keeping your butt, back and your chest up. On the way back up, exert a burst of energy and bring the weights up overhead by fully extending your arms. Pause for a second, lower the weights back down and repeat. Do 10 reps.

7 BURPEE TUCK JUMPS â&#x20AC;&#x153;The burpee tuck jump engages your entire body,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein, who offers this mental trick for boosting your energy: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Picture yourself oversleeping and jumping out of bed, like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I gotta get to work!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? HOW TO DO IT: Begin standing, and then lower into a squat and place your hands on the floor in front of you. Kick both feet back so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a push-up position. Next, lower your chest to the floor, then bring it back up. Now, jump your feet forward into their original position (squatting). Finish by jumping in the air and bringing your knees as close to your chest as possible.

Do 10 reps.

ALTERNATING JACKKNIVES â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a rapid move that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feel throughout your abs,â&#x20AC;? says Houssein. HOW TO DO IT: Lie on your back (and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get comfortable!) with your right knee bent and your right foot flat on the floor. Reach your left arm over your head and keep your right arm by your side, palm facing the ground. Now reach your left hand and right foot to meet in midair. Return them to the floor and alternate hands and feet to do both sides. Do 20 reps (10 with each leg) before returning to exercise 6 and going through as many rounds as possible in the span of seven minutes.
