How the run got started and history made over a couple beers Not surprisingly, the idea was hatched over a couple of beers in late 1981 by three Badger loyalists at a campus bar. The three, Tom Grantham, Ken Sparks, and Rich Backus, wanted to raise money to support UW Athletics. As admirers of then- Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch, they asked his permission to name it the “Crazylegs Run” in his honor. Tom Grantham continues to serve as General Chairman on the Crazylegs Classic Executive Committee. A Little “Classic” History The first race in 1982 attracted 1,525 runners and raised $9,500. The event grew in popularity and the walk was added in 1987 with 676 walkers the first year. The event has crazylegs>>page10

For your next training session, rewind back to your years as a kid playing with rubber bands. Remember when you used to stretch a rubber band as far as possible and watch it forcefully snap forward? Like a rubber band, our muscles were made to stretch and contract through the process of eccentric and concentric movements. Whether you’re doing a simple everyday activity like walking down stairs or a high-intensity exercise like an Olympic lift, your body goes through eccentric and concentric motions. Concentric movements are the actions that “start movements, while eccentric actions slow activity down.� And as a wise coach once said, “We build concentrically; we move eccentrically.� Think of eccentric strength as the equal (and sometimes stronger) opposite reaction to powerful concentric movements. So while you’re sprinting down the track at full speed, the concentric motion of your quadriceps propels you forward and the eccentric movement of your hamstring slows the activity down and “stores elastic recoil energy in preparation for a shortening (concentric) contraction.� Read on to learn why you need to incorporate eccentric movements into your training program to make you the best athlete you can be! Focusing on your time against gravity trains your muscles to work differently. What Is Eccentric Training? One of the first discoveries of eccentric training was in 1882 when Dr. Adolf Fick found that “contracting muscle under stretch could produce a greater force than a shortening muscle.� By definition, “an eccentric muscle contraction is the stretching of a muscle in response to an opposing force on that muscle, in which the opposing force (weight being lifted) is greater than its current force production.� To translate all that science into everyday English: Eccentrics are also known as “negatives,� the slow lowering of a FITNESS>>page 9

HORIZON LEAGUE AND 313 PRESENTS ANNOUNCE MOTOR CITY MADNESS ESPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP To be Held in Advance of 2018 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championship Leading up to the 2018 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, the League and 313 Presents on Friday announced the formulation of the Motor City Madness Esports Championship, featuring 16 online NBA 2K18 tournaments to be played in the month of February, along with a live championship event to be held at Little Caesars Arena on the eve of Motor City Madness. Online tournaments will be played from February 20-25 on the GamerSaloon tournament platform. During the weekend of February 24-25, 12 tournaments will be played, 11 of which will be on the Xbox One system. The remaining four tournaments will take place HORIZON>>page 13

EXPERIENCE ROAD AMERICA Located in Wisconsins scenic Kettle Moraine, Elkhart Lakes Road America, Inc. is one of the worlds fastest permanent road racing tracks. Super Trucks and Trans Am August 6-8 The NASCAR Xfinity Series Henry 180 weekend will feature incredible wheel-to-wheel and door-todoor racing from the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Stadium Super Truck Series and the Trans Am Series. Race fans will have the opportunity to watch some of NASCAR’s future stars as they test their skills on the storied 4-mile, 14-turn road circuit. Road America has a legendary history of featuring brilliant racers on a challenging circuit that easily separates the good from the great drivers. The weekend will also include the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, which was originally scheduled for the IMSA weekend. The widely popular Stadium SUPER Truck Series presented by Menards features identically prepared 650-horsepower trucks that are built to take flight. Being able to race on virtually any surface thrown at them, the Stadium SUPER Trucks will race the front half of Road America, crossing between turns 5 and 13 as compared to the entire 4-mile circuit utilized by NASCAR Xfinity Series and the Trans Am Series. The Stadium SUPER Truck races presented by Menards will feature four 36-inch tall aluminum ramps placed in strategic locations on the racecourse, allowing the trucks to fly 20 feet off the ground and hundreds of feet down the racecourse.

Outdoor Movie Night August 21, 2020 Our 2nd Outdoor Movie of the summer will be RUSH (Rated R). Tickets are $25 per car and concessions will be available. The Main Gate (opens at 7 p.m.) with the show starting at dusk. Fans are encouraged to print their tickets at home to enjoy a contactless experience at the gate. The screen will be set up inside the Main Gate near Turn 14, and cars will be separated by a parking space, allowing for fans to set up lawn chairs while maintaining social distancing from others. Staff equipped with PPE will be on hand at all entrances and in the parking area to ensure social distancing is being observed and to assist anyone. Join us for Ron Howard’s RUSH (Rated R).
