PUBLISHER’SLETTER Dear Readers,

50 W. Liberty St, Ste. 203, Reno NV 89501

I

PUBLISHER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

n August 2006, Healthy Beginnings Magazine published the very first copy of its magazine in Northern Nevada. 13 years later, I am proud to be back in the saddle once again as Publisher of HBmag. It is my hope that you will be just as satisfied today as readers and consumers of natural health information as you were when we launched our first publication. The Sunflower has always been my favorite cover image for the month of August. It graced the very first issue in 2006. To me, the Sunflower symbolizes a robust, intelligent and healthy energy that illustrates the spirit and direction of Healthy Beginnings Magazine. Gladiolus and Poppy are actually the birth flowers for the month of August. Like the Sunflower, these flowers capture the essence of sun-filled, late summer days. Gladiolus is also called the sword lily and represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation — nature’s display of Cupid at work, the heart being pierced by love. Give a beautiful bouquet of these sensuous blossoms to a loved one. Whole Foods usually has a great assortment of them. There are many different poppies, each with its own signification. The Red Poppy symbolizes pleasure, while a White Poppy is given to console. The bright Yellow Poppy sends wishes of wealth and success to the recipient. When I think of Poppies, Georgia O’Keeffe comes to my mind; she is best known for her paintings of large, sensuous flowers and New Mexico landscapes. From July 20-October 20, The Nevada Museum of Art is presenting an unusual O’Keeffe exhibit entitled: Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern. Please enjoy this month’s informative and fascinating health articles by some of our most popular authors: Dr. Eslinger asks, “Could What You’re Eating Be Slowly Killing You?” Dr. Gerber explores, “Progesterone, A Most Wondrous Hormone.” Dr. Clearfield describes, “The Building Blocks of Life: Peptides.” Dr. Ibarra Nario details, “Deciphering the Vitamin D Dilemma,” and, Dr. Andy Drymalski dares to question, “The PC Gestapo and the Death of Humor.” Check out our regular department articles and test drive our delicious and nutritious recipes. Before you know it, August will turn into September. The weather has been spectacular this summer, great for hiking, SUP on the lake, biking and riding, or what ever suits your fancy. We are so fortunate to live, work, and play here in paradise—Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierras — and we call it home. Healthy Beginnings is supported by two important and distinct streams — our community of health- related advertisers and our loyal readers who want to stay abreast of our rapidly-changing natural health products, services, and options. I send all of you a warm and heartfelt thank you, and look forward to many more fruitful years of learning and growing together. HB Best in Health and Happiness,

PROGESTERONE A Most Wondrous Hormone By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD Practitioner of Homeopathic Medicine

F

a hypoglycemic rage, or won’t sleep. Progesterone blocks adrenalin by enhancing MAO, an enzyme that digests adrenalin out of the system and enhances GABA, one of our relaxing, calming brain chemicals.1 It is a helpful pretreatment for public speaking and test-taking.

or the past several years, high-dose progesterone cream, 75 mg per pump has been available. OTC progesterone is 20 mg per pump, and some creams go up to 50 mg per pump. When applied topically, this cream is calming, because it is a parent hormone of the adrenal cortex — the outer layer of the adrenal glands, which sit on the kidneys and give us stable blood sugar and good sleep. This is not a drug, but a bioidentical hormone, like we make in our bodies. It is not the synthetic hormones which are used in birth control pills or regular menopausal therapy.

Sleep One of the great qualities of progesterone as I have mentioned is that it blocks adrenalin. At night, if patients have a weak adrenal gland from stress or toxicity, they don’t store blood sugar well in their livers. When the blood sugar drops at 3 AM, the brain kicks in the adrenalin made in the middle of the adrenal gland, and converts protein and fat into blood sugar so the patient doesn’t die; however, it also wakes them up with anxiety, rapid heart rate, and the mind goes to unsolved problems of the day, aggravating the stress. Progesterone, when applied at that time, frequently puts the patient back to sleep in three to five minutes. Applying before bed is also helpful for sleep. Progesterone is also available in a sustained release capsule at 100 mg and 200 mg doses, which has a half-life of four to six hours and is much stronger for sleep.

Progesterone is useful for all, because it is not feminizing. I always thought that it was because progesterone literally means, “for the pregnancy,” and increases 40-fold during pregnancy. It was unfortunately named progesterone in 1934 when it was discovered. It is important to use in children and men as well as women, and does not grow breasts. Estrogen, of course, does. The cream is terrific for ADD and ADHD in children. They will ask for it when they are anxious, fearful, or feel out of control. Autistic spectrum children also frequently respond very well. Parents love it, especially after the kids get into sugar and have

Female Helper Most female hormone ills can be helped by progesterone. Painful periods and PMS can be resolved in about two menstrual cycles. Infertility has long been treated by progesterone as well as miscarriage. It can be used all through the pregnancy and postpartum. Applied several times daily, it heals the uterus and can treat endometriosis, prevent fibroid tumors of the uterus, ovarian cysts, sore breasts (not breast cancer), and heavy periods with thyroid and estrogen dominance symptoms. If attempting to conceive, apply only on days 18 through 28 of the menstrual cycle. Be warned that

some gynecologists don’t know what progesterone is. They think it is Provera, a synthetic progestogen that can block progesterone.

For more info, contact Michael Gerber, MD, HMD of the Gerber Medical Clinic at (775) 826-1900.

Headaches Applying progesterone cream to sides of the neck and other aching sites on the head at the first sign of a headache, even migraines, can help relieve the pain. Application to the wrists and forearms is beneficial as well. It helps relieve sore muscles and muscle cramps throughout the body, as well as a host of brain toxicity symptoms. It is an invaluable addition to our healing armamentarium. HB

(D)eciphering the Vitamin D (D)ilemma (Part I) By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.

by the body, where skin cholesterol is activated by sunlight into Vitamin D. When it is taken as a supplement, it is called a vitamin because it comes from sources other than the body. There are two types of Vitamin D: D2, which comes from yeast sources, and D3, which comes from plants and animals such as sheep’s wool.

Note: Due to increasing demand, this topic has been requested by patients and colleagues alike, as we are experiencing the presently booming Vitamin D supplement industry. We are witnessing its increasing popularity by trade; but, what are the health benefits that it brings? Let me now respond to all their queries so I can shed light onto the truth behind this vitamin.

Studies have shown that 42% of the US population is Vitamin D deficient. Being in North America alone stands as a huge risk factor, where the majority of the states are on a higher latitude. During the winter months, the sun’s rays land on an angle, whereby standing under the midday sun for 15-30 minutes is not enough to produce vitamin D; thus, the need for supplementation arises. Deficiency is also attributable to being indoors more during the winter, indoor jobs, wearing clothes that cover most of the skin, use of sunscreen, living in smog-covered cities, any inflammatory state (e.g., arthritis), overweight/obesity (fat cells lodge Vitamin D due to it being fat soluble; losing weight releases it back into the system); and, the ability to synthesize Vitamin D decreases as one gets older. It was also found that supplements in the market are poorly regulated—and, some are found to have less Vitamin D content than what they claim.

S

ummer is here! We are so ready to bask under the hot sun. One gets a good tan from the sun; but, the natural rise of endorphins (“feel good” hormones) from it, makes one happy to crave for more. While this is happening, the ‘”freebie” vitamin— Vitamin D—is activated. Since Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin and activated by sunlight into a beneficial “wonder drug,” it is considered the most inexpensive among the vitamins. Recently, its innumerable beneficial effects on the body have risen to the front, putting Vitamin D on almost everyone’s supplement list. Before anything else, let’s be clear: Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin; it is a hormone. This hormone is naturally produced Visit HBmag.com

If you have any of these symptoms, you may have Vitamin D deficiency:

due to the abundant delivery of UV rays (more UVA than UVB, which are ineffective in producing vitamin D in the skin). This shows that supplementation can be better than sun exposure.

Sunlight, as mentioned, is the cheapest trigger for our source of Vitamin D. Studies done on native African people who were almost half naked and were always exposed to the sun have shown >100 ng/ml of Vitamin D levels in their blood. Sadly, these Vitamin D levels are also associated with the risks of increasing cataract formation, rapid skin aging, and susceptibility to develop skin cancer due to the harmful UV rays.

Could What You’re Eating By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

R

ecently I read a book that was so earth–changing, that I decided to do a review of it for my article this month. The book is, The Plant Paradox, by Steven Gundry, M.D. This is not just another diet book. In fact, it is not a diet book at all. It is a book about how we have all been misled into believing that many whole foods are “healthy,” when in fact they are leading us down the road to dependence on pharmaceuticals for treating chronic diseases of all kinds. There are so many “diets” out there these days it will make your head spin—everything from Keto, Paleo, Low Carb, High Carb, Raw, Protein Power, Vegan to Vegetarian, and on and on and on, until you don’t know which way to turn. This book is different. It is about choosing foods based on entirely different criteria than I have ever heard of before. Foods that can heal your digestive problems, raise your level of health and well-being, increase your level of energy, and also lengthen your life in the process. The weight loss comes for free! Visit HBmag.com

One of Dr. Gundry’s principles is, “Your health problems are not your fault!” They have nothing to do with lack of willpower, laziness, poor exercise habits, or a bad attitude. It comes down to the fact that we have all been misled about what are the actual constituents in the most common foods that we all eat today. We have been misled about what is actually healthy to eat, and why. This is the real story. Through millennia plants have developed ways to protect themselves from predators. One of the most common protective chemicals is a protein called lectin. These substances are so strong they can even kill many insects that try to eat the plant. Because we are so much bigger than insects it is uncommon for these chemicals to outright kill us. What they do instead is damage the lining inside our small bowel that triggers our immune systems to cause chronic inflammation. Depending on your genetic makeup, this inflammation can

Be Slowly Killing You? ultimately lead to diseases like MS, Parkinson’s, Irritable Bowel, Heart Disease, Arthritis, Migraines, and many more.

without medication. The key is eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong foods.

Most pharmaceuticals that are used to treat these diseases usually lead to further damage to the bowel lining, and over time, actually make the condition worse.

Things such as onions, garlic, salad greens, sweet potatoes, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts), certain nuts, and certain kinds of animal protein in moderation are a good place to start.

Modern drugs are very good at covering up the symptoms but rarely do they solve the problem or cure the disease. Most doctors are trained to use drugs. They are not trained to promote health… especially by the use of proper diet. Foods that contain many lectins are most grains (especially wheat and corn), most beans, all nightshades (tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant, and peppers), and peanuts. This is just to name the most common ones. The other big problem these lectins can cause is unwanted weight gain and fat build up in, and on, the heart.

It can literally improve and extend your life. Read this book! Gundry, Steven R, M.D., The Plant Paradox, Harper Collins Publishers, 2017 HB

INTRODUCTION TO PEPTIDES

Introduction—Amino Acids, Proteins, and Peptides: The Building Blocks of Life By Dr. William Clearfield, D.O.

A

mino acids are groups of organic molecules composed of an amino group (—NH2), an acidic carboxyl group (— COOH), and an organic side chain (R group). 1 A generalized chemical structure for an amino acid is:2

Distinguished by its “R” side chain, nature recognizes 20 distinct amino acids divided into three categories. Essential Amino Acids are exogenous to the body and must be taken in the form of food or other external means. These nine amino acids — histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine must be ingested via foodstuffs or some other means (intravenous, transdermal or liquid). Non-essential amino acids including alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine are generated by the body. Conditional amino acids consist of arginine, cysteine, glutamine, tyrosine, glycine, ornithine, proline, and serine are non-essential except in time of stress. Proteins, two or more amino acids linked by a peptide bond in a chain3, enable the body to grow, repair damaged tissue,

give cells, and hence the body, shape, and are useful as a source of energy. Typical protein chains are longer than 50 amino acid combinations. Proteins respond to extracellular environmental input. Peptides, structurally like proteins, are shorter, containing less than 50 amino acid chains. Peptides are less well-defined in structure and are easily modified with added-on structures. “Oligopeptides,” substances with less than 20, or “polypeptides,” consisting of 21-50 amino acids further classify peptide categories. The sequence, shape, and type of amino acids involved determine a peptide’s function. Proteins are primarily large peptides, formed from one or more polypeptides. For example, as we mature, “a-g-e” being a four-letter word from where I hail, due to built-in senescence, collagen breaks down. The skin thins and wrinkles. The resultant damaged collagen produces peptides, messengers sent to signal the skin to produce more collagen. The regenerated tissues are incomplete, setting off a vicious cycle of breakdown and “disability” of the integumentary system. Applying exogenous peptides, via a high-quality cream, causes the skin to “misremember” its repair sequence, accelerating the rate of new collagen restoration. This has been used for years, and is now available as an injectable. 2-50 amino acids, namely a peptide, may be combined into an infinite variety of compounds. To date, over 7000 sequences are known, with 500 showing some sort of therapeutic value. 60 are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as medications. 4 Peptides regulate almost every known process and system in the body in tissue and cell-specific manner. They are tissuespecific, while hormones affect the body as a whole. We consider peptides as “fine tuning” mechanisms for hormones, the immune system, sleep, the regulation of inflammatory cytokines, cell renewal, cancer cell destruction, libido, sexual arousal, weight loss, lean muscle gain, wound healing, brain function, and the urinary and reproductive systems. Therapeutically, we utilize peptides for immune enhancement, sleep, memory, depression, anxiety, improved cognition and in the aftermath of traumatic brain injury, as an antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic agent, and for cellular rejuvenation and restoration, and pain relief.

The PC Gestapo and the Death of Humor By Andy Drymalski, EdD

A

frequent casualty of the Politically Correct (PC) movement is one of the most valuable and healing gifts of the human race — one which the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer called, “the only divine quality in man”—namely, humor. From the perspective of depth psychology, humor engages the shadow, the part of the personality that is repressed, ignored, or otherwise denied. We construct a persona (public face) for ourselves, but what is also part of ourselves yet refused expression becomes our shadow. As the term suggests, the shadow is what we keep in the dark. The persona serves a useful function for the expression of our identity and outer role in life. However, our persona can create problems when it is rigid, constricting, or distorting of our real personality. It is also problematic when we have identified with it — that is, when we act as if it is all of who we are. In such cases we speak of living out of a false self. Fortunately for us our shadow has a remedy. It brings us back to earth by laughing at us, poking fun at us and tripping us up. It punches holes in our persona. At a collective level, it makes fun of our herd-like thinking, our arrogance, our false and subtly coercive societal and cultural personas. The trickster is an archetypal figure, or essence, that arises from the shadow side of the personality. The trickster is what we might call the patron saint of comedy. The trickster part of our personality, and the trickster part of life, uses humor to release tension. It helps us acknowledge truths, attitudes, and feelings we might otherwise ignore or deny. It helps us to see

Visit HBmag.com

and embrace paradoxes, resolve disagreements, and see things in new ways. When necessary, it humbles us by undermining and deflating our false self or stilted persona. The trickster energy in life connects people through experiences of shared laughter and humanness. The proclivity of PC advocates (hereafter referred to as the PC Gestapo) towards judgmentalness, arrogance, and interference is revealed by the way they often impose their PC ideology onto others. If you don’t like the humor of a particular comedian, for example, the mature thing to do is to simply not tune in to that comedian. Live and let live, laugh and let laugh. But the PC movement has a tendency to so embolden people with a sense of righteousness and moral superiority that they feel justified in dictating to others what is and isn’t funny, what should be a subject of humor and what shouldn’t. Comedian Colin Quinn speaks to this issue when he sarcastically observes, Bloggers tell me all the time, they say, “As a comedian, don’t you realize you’re supposed to evolve with your audience?” [that is, be politically correct] “And that is true. That is actually why I got into comedy, so I could march in lockstep with society’s contemporary conventions”. Quinn’s point is that humor is supposed to challenge societal norms by giving the shadow a voice. A society that can’t laugh at itself and people who feel it is their job to make sure humor never offends anyone are doomed—and try to doom others — to a stale and humorless life. With PC as nightstick, we are cultivating a society of thin-skinned, prickly people who can’t laugh at themselves and who wantonly wield

14

a socially-sanctioned form of suppression. Rather than defusing conflict between social groups, excessive, knee-jerk repression of humor by the lock-in-step PC Gestapo may actually increase anger, resentment, and violence. The psyche does not lie, so when there is spontaneous, honest laughter there is also a truth. It may not be a truth for everyone, but it does reveal a truth about the person who laughs. When the shadow laughs there is a reason why. There is something we can learn in all genuine laughter. To try and tell the psyche what is funny and what is not, to regulate and dictate its responses is repressive and injurious at both the individual and societal levels. Society needs its safety valves and humor is one of them. Many Native American tribes used trickster figures to bring levity to their sacred rituals. They knew the danger of psychological inflation and of their people, especially of their religious leaders, becoming identified with or possessed by their roles, tempting the imposition of their morality on others. How much healthier our society might be if religious groups and all idealism worshippers regularly poked fun of and laughed at themselves and their tendency to self-righteousness. It is time for the PC Gestapo to laugh at themselves and acknowledge the extremity, insensitivity, and inhumanity of some of their viewpoints. In the interest of humor welfare, I list below nine signs that you, or someone you know, might be a member of the PC Gestapo: 1) You are a administrator, personnel, or human resources manager. 2) You suffer from the delusion that you hold no prejudices, are never judgmental and possess no stereotyped views of any social, racial, religious, or other group. 3) You have difficulty laughing at yourself. 4) Deep down you are still angry that you didn’t pass the tests necessary to become a policeman or a lawyer. 5) People find you boring. 6) You have an unconscious God complex. 7) You are reluctant to take risks and lack empathy for those who do. 8) You adopt the ready-made morality of mainstream society rather than putting in the effort and sacrifice to discover and define your own. 9) You only wear underwear that has been starched, pressed, and repressed. Don’t Let T Your Bag Get You

hink the computer you’re carrying around, the big purse with everything but the kitchen sink in it, or the books and school supplies that your child is carrying in a backpack slung haphazardly across one shoulder are harmless?

DOWN By Tony C. Jensen, D.C.

Think again! Strain to the body from carrying bags that are too heavy may lead to health complications including muscle spasms, pain in the back, neck or joints, sprains or strains, and even headaches. Health professionals recommend carrying lighter loads and using backpacks instead of single-strap bags, such as messenger bags or large purses. The muscles in the neck and shoulder run up to the head, while the nerves in the neck run all the way down the arms. This means that a strain applied at one point can have effects throughout the body. Humans are born with a spine made up of 33 vertebrae and associated discs, which support the majority of weight and stress that is put on it. When stresses placed on the spine exceed its ability to absorb them, spinal imbalance — and injury — can result. A heavy backpack, for example, can pull a child backward, causing the child to compensate by either bending forward or arching their back, compressing the spine. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can also cause a child to lean too far to the other side to offset the weight. Over time, this overcompensation can lead to poor posture, muscle strain and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. Backpacks with tight, narrow straps that dig into the skin can interfere with circulation and nerve function, causing tingling, numbness, and weakness in the arms and hands. Heavy loads carried by more than 79 million students across the U.S. can cause low back pain that often lasts through adulthood. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2010, nearly 28,000 strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures from backpacks were treated in hospital emergency rooms, physician’s offices, and clinics. “A child wearing a backpack incorrectly, or that is too heavy, can be contributing factors for discomfort, fatigue, muscle soreness, and musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lower back,” says Karen Jacobs, EdD, OTR/L, CPE, clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University, and an expert on school ergonomics and healthy growth and development of school-age children. While weight can be a concern, Dr. Douglas Armstrong, an orthopedic specialist at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, explains that even though backpacks can be heavy, that is not the most important concern. “Children are at a higher risk for spine problems based on how they carry the backpack, pick it up, and put it on, not from how much weight is inside,” says Armstrong. Children can avoid back pain by:

Evenly distributing the load

2. Keeping the backpack close to the body and bending at the knees while picking it up, and 3. Use both straps while wearing the backpack, and maintaining it centered on the body. “Two straps are always better than one, because they can keep the backpack near the child’s center of gravity,” Armstrong says. “However, it is OK to carry light items in a satchel or bag with one strap over the shoulder.” So, think smart and take better care of your spine by making your bag lighter and carrying it correctly. By doing this, you will HB decrease your – and your loved ones – problems in the future......

MARIJUANA: BENEFITS AND HEALTH HAZARDS

By Ariana Purcell

O

ne of the more controversial issues currently in the United States is whether marijuana should be legalized. Whether for medical or recreational use, there are still a considerable amount of questions surrounding its use, legally. As of June, 2019, medical marijuana use is now legal in 34 states, while recreational marijuana use is fully legal in 10 states, as well as in Washington, D.C. These are state-legalized marijuana laws, and not federally-legalized marijuana laws. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “The term medical marijuana refers using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions.” Currently, there are two main cannabinoids in the marijuana plant that are of medical interest: THC and CBD. While a relatively newlystudied subject, there is ample research showing certain benefits and hazards of the marijuana plant for medical purposes. One of the most common reasons for medical marijuana use in adults is chronic pain, an issue that plagues many Americans. According to a 2016 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 100 million U.S. adults suffer from chronic pain. It is important to note that the No. 1 prescription to aid chronic pain is prescribed opiates—an often-misused treatment that leads to addiction and subsequent substance dependency issues. The NIDA approximated that, in

2017, 1.7 million Americans suffered from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research, is a report by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine, published by The National Academies Press in 2017. This report shows substantial evidence through a collection of studies involving the use of medical marijuana for different health issues and or illnesses: chronic pain, chemotherapy induced nausea/vomiting, anorexia/weight loss associated with HIV/AIDS, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and PTSD. One study in The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids, reported a correlation between a Michigan medical marijuana dispensary and a 64 percent reduction in opioid use among chronic pain patients. A similar, recent analysis of prescription data was conducted with regards to enrollees in Medicare Part D, where U.S. states with access to medical cannabis suggest a significant reduction in the prescription of conventional pain medications. Chronic Pain Patients’ Perspectives of Medical Cannabis, by Brian J. Piper, et al., published several studies on how patients feel with their medical use of marijuana for their chronic pain symptoms. The majority of patients reported health benefits, including improved pain management

and sleep, along with other beneficial attributes, such as less addiction, and low-to-no risk of overdose, when comparing to opioid medications. Currently, according to The National Institutes of Health (NIH), there have been no reports or evidence of teens or adults dying from marijuana overdose. It is crucial to point out that although marijuana used for medical purposes may be beneficial, as stated by the NIH/NIDA, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet recognized or approved the marijuana plant as a medicine.” When using marijuana medically, it is imperative that, just as with any medical drug or prescription, that a patient’s weight, age, dosage, and type (in this case, marijuana plant strain), must all be considered. Marijuana consumption by youths and teenagers can produce long-term negative effects, including brain development issues. According to the NIH/NIDA, the use of marijuana during adolescent years may impair thinking, memory, and learning functions. Short-term effects may include memory loss, poor judgment, and distortion of perception. Marijuana use during pregnancy may cause long-lasting effects on the child, such as learning disabilities and/or abnormal patterns of social interactions. Marijuana has been described as a gateway drug, yet research shows it to be no more of a gateway drug than alcohol or tobacco.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

Importantly, the use of marijuana during one’s youth can increase the risk of addiction. According to the NIH/NIDA, THC levels in marijuana have risen, especially recently. This may be a factor in the likelihood of dependency—the higher the THC levels, along with regular (daily) use, the more likely it is to be addictive. Whether you are looking to use marijuana medically or recreationally, and depending on your state’s current marijuana laws, it is important to know the facts. Calcite as a seeker builder crystal, calcite is a powerful stone to place on one’s altar in order to focus one’s energy on achieving a highly desirable goal. Whether attracting true love, the perfect home, a career move, or financial gain, this stone aids in these efforts perfectly.

By Allison Prater

Clear, blue, pink, and green calcite are all of a receptive energy and associated with the element of water. Pink, blue, and green calcite all correspond to the planet Venus; clear calcite corresponds to the moon. Clear calcite helps to focus the mind during meditation. Pink calcite is a calming and grounding stone often used in love rituals. Blue calcite is often worn on the body for healing purposes, and is considered to be purifying to energy of both body and home. Green calcite is said to attract money into the home, particularly when placed on an altar with green candles.

C

alcite is a transparent crystal found in a large variety of colors including green, pink, orange, blue, and clear. A carbonate mineral, calcite is the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. The word calcite is derived from the German word Calcit, which was coined from the Latin word for lime, calx, perhaps because calcite is a common constituent of sedimentary rocks, particularly limestone. Much of the calcite in the world is formed from the shells of dead marine organisms, as well as plankton, red algae, some sponges, and the shells of oysters. It was discovered that the Trilobite, which has been extinct for billions of years, had a unique eye structure that used calcite crystals to form the lenses. Ancient Egyptians celebrated the Egyptian cat goddess, Bast, by carving figures of her out of this stone. It was often used in combination with alabaster, a stone that derives its name from this feline deity. In fact, several perfume jars made from calcite were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. In more recent history, calcite was used in World War II anti-aircraft weaponry and bombs. There are even reports of experiments to see if calcite could be used in the creation of an invisibility cloak! In 2011, researchers at Berkeley Lab at UC Berkeley developed a cloaking system that is effective in visible light for hiding macroscopic objects. This cloak is constructed from calcite.

Orange calcite and honey calcite are projective in energy. They are associated with the sun and the element of fire. Unlike the other colors that tend to calm and cool the body, orange calcite is charging and increases physical energy. In Feng Shui, calcite is considered to have metal energy. This is the energy of intelligence, healing, and creativity. It facilitates the crystallization of ideas and concepts. This crystal enhances our concentration and determination, especially when placed in the west corner of the home. It is considered a good stone to balance excessive yang energy. Calcite can be found all over Nevada, particularly throughout Nye County. Clear calcite and honey calcite are the most common in this area. If you choose to work with this crystal, may it double the love, money, joy, and focus in your life. HB

Calcite creates an interesting optical illusion of double refraction. For example, if you draw a line on a piece of paper, and then place a calcite crystal on top of it, the line will appear doubled when viewed through the stone. For this reason, calcite is often used in spells and rituals to “double the power.” Known

Market Fresh Pico de Gallo

N

By Julie Rehaume

ext time you go to your local farmer’s market, pick up some of your favorite tomatoes, a sweet onion (red is nice!), a bunch of cilantro, and a jalapeno or two. The only spices used in this fresh-tasting recipe are ground cumin and pressed garlic, but you can also add cumin seeds and red pepper flakes if you want a little more “flavor town.” This recipe uses Roma tomatoes, or more preferably a mixed variety of the smaller Heirloom (yellow, red, orange, and red/green) tomatoes for a variety of colors and sweetness. INGREDIENTS: 4 Roma Tomatoes, or 1 basket of small Heirloom Tomatoes 1 Sweet Onion (white or red or both!) About half of one bunch of Cilantro 1-2 Jalapeños (depending on how hot they are, and on how big a bowl you are making — one will usually suffice). You can also use other peppers of choice: Habanero, Serrano, etc., for extra kick! 1 Lime 1-2 tsp Ground Cumin (per your taste preference) 1-2 Cloves Garlic (per your taste preference), garlic pressed into the mix, or you can use ground powdered too (fresh is best!) DIRECTIONS: Chop tomatoes to desired size; add cumin and garlic. Chop onion and jalapeno, add to the tomatoes; toss lightly to mix the seasonings with the veggies. Chop cilantro to desired size, and be sure and include some of the stem for added crunch and taste! Add to the veggies. Cut a lime in half and squeeze into the mix, include the pulp, without the membrane, as you can. Use half a lime for a small bowl of Pico; a whole lime if making a larger bowl. Toss all together and let sit for about 30 minutes or so at room temperature, to ‘cook’ the flavors together. Serve with your choice of tortilla chips. Refrigerate any unused portion.

VARIATION: Chop an avocado into chunks and spoon some Pico over it, toss lightly and serve with your favorite tortilla chips for a WONDERFUL avocado salsa! However, do note, this one does not keep well, so be sure to just make the amount you plan to eat today. HB

This Pico is also wonderful on salads, eggs, breakfast potatoes — pretty much with anything where you might use salsa.

GOLDENROD

HERBS&SPICES

By Allison Prater

T

he genus name for Goldenrod, Solidago, comes from the combination of the Latin words solida, “whole” and ago, “to make.” It is a treasured medicinal herb in both Chinese and First Nation healing traditions. In British folklore the plant is reported to have benefits for the pocketbook as well as the body. The flowery tops of the goldenrod plant were said to point in the direction of hidden treasures, or mark the location of hidden springs. There are three species of goldenrod which include S. nemoralis or gray goldenrod, S. odora or sweet goldenrod, and S. virgaurea or European goldenrod. All are used for their astringent, diuretic, and diaphoretic properties. There are some differences between the three species. For example, gray goldenrod is used as a calmative, while sweet goldenrod, though sometimes used for this purpose is most often taken as a stimulant. The flowers of sweet goldenrod have laxative properties and a tea made from them has been used to treat urinary obstructions. European goldenrod has many uses including the treatment of periodontal disease, arthritis, chronic eczema, and

kidney inflammation. Some herbalists use the crushed leaves topically to treat skin conditions as well as wounds, sores, and insect bites. In Chinese medicine S. virgaurea is used as a remedy for headaches, flus, fevers, and indigestion. While there are no known negative side effects attributed to goldenrod, it is not appropriate for individuals with pollen allergies. As always, it is best to consult with a licensed health care provider you trust before working with this, or any other herbal remedy. Goldenrod is often used in the creation of natural dyes. They achieve varying shades of yellow, depending on the mordant used. Adding onion skins and sage leaves to the dye pot can soften the brassier tones of yellow that can come as a result of using only goldenrod for color. In the UK, goldenrod is a favorite plant for creating colorful garden borders. This has resulted in the breeding of a dwarf variety of the plant which has bigger flower heads and shorter plants, only growing about one foot in height, as opposed to its cousins, which can grow up to seven feet.

from nurseries that specialize in native plants, rather than harvesting from the wild. When cultivating goldenrod for medicine, one should collect the flowering tops and dry them on low heat. Spread out to dry immediately after harvesting, as goldenrod will turn black if left stacked in piles too long. The next time you spot a roadside patch of goldenrod, pay attention to the direction it is pointing… it may just lead to hidden treasure. HB

HEALTHYPETS

Cancer in Pets By Ariana Purcell

T

here are roughly 65 million pet dogs and 32 million pet cats in the United States, according to the Animal Cancer Foundation. Unfortunately, out of these pets, about 6 million dogs and 6 million cats are diagnosed with cancer, annually. According to the Colorado State University (CSU) Flint Animal Cancer Center, one in four dogs and one in five cats will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. As cancer rates rise in humans, so do cancer rates rise in our furry friends.

Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to a genetic predisposition for increased risk of cancer. For example, according to vetstreet.com, “Boxers are prone to mast cell tumors, Bernese Mountain Dogs to histiocytic sarcoma, Golden Retrievers to lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma, and Rottweilers to osteosarcoma.” In our feline friends, cats who develop cancer tend to suffer from similar diagnoses seen in humans: lymphoma, leukemia, breast cancer, and skin cancer.

While the cause of cancer in pets is a difficult question to answer, most scientists believe this high percentage of pet cancer is because they share the same environmental risk factors with humans—water, air, and even food. In humans, one-third of all tumors are related to environmental and lifestyle factors; this can, in turn be the same for pets.

As pet owners, we can take certain actions to greatly help reduce the risk of cancer in our beloved four-legged family members. One of the most important steps we can take is making sure our pets are spayed or neutered. Research shows female dogs that are spayed before their first heat very rarely develop mammary cancer, whereas unspayed dogs have a 200 times greater risk of breast cancer. Spayed dogs and cats also have zero risk of ovarian or uterine cancer. In male dogs and cats, the risk of testicular cancer is eliminated by neutering.

Most canine or feline cancers are due to genetic mutations that occur after birth, internal factors, or external factors. This can be anything from nutrition, hormones, or viruses, to carcinogens such as smoke, pesticides, UV light, asbestos, waste incinerators, and even canned food, to name a few possible causes— any of these can contribute to increased risk of cancer in pets. Age plays a huge part in cancer diagnoses in pets as well; older dogs and cats are more likely to contract cancer. Some scientists speculate this could be due to a weakened immune system in our older fur babies, making it easier for cells to mutate into precancerous cells. Obviously, cancer formation is a complex process that can be triggered by several different causes, including (but not limited to) hereditary, environmental, and nutritional factors.

Visit HBmag.com

Providing good nutrition for your pet is another key choice when trying to reduce cancer risk. There are many choices on the market these days, including organic brands without harmful fillers; read your labels and do your research. Reducing your pet’s exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet radiation can be beneficial. Almost all species of domestic animals can develop squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is a skin cancer typically developed on exposed skin (eyelids, nose, ears). Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors have a higher risk of skin cancers like SCC. Animals with light or white skin/fur/ hair are more likely to develop SCC than those with dark skin/ fur/hair.

T

he Sunflower has many unique qualities. Its origins can be traced to America’s prairie states. The Native Americans were the first to cultivate the sunflowers as a source for food — using sunflower meal to make bread, and its seed oil for cooking purposes. Sunflower seeds produce a lot of nutritional value, including providing energy for the body, and lowering stress levels; however, these seeds offer other benefits as well, such as vibrant skin, and faster hair growth.

Vitamin B and fiber are also found in sunflower seeds, helping to support your energy levels, while keeping you “feeling full” for longer periods of time. The seeds contain both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids — types of good fat for your body — which will also aid in protecting your arteries. Sunflower seeds contain the amino acid tryptophan, an essential component of the brain neurotransmitter, serotonin; thus, boosting your mood, while also encouraging a restful night’s sleep.

Sunflower seeds are rich in Vitamin E, the body’s main, fat-soluble antioxidant that travels up the body’s systems, aiding in neutralizing damaging free radicals. Vitamin E provides the scalp and hair strands with deep nourishment, promoting hair growth as well.

Next time you are looking for a healthy, quick snack, grab some sunflower seeds and begin to enjoy the many health benefits the sunflower and its seeds have to offer. HB

Ninety percent of a person’s daily Vitamin E needs can be provided with just a quarter cup of sunflower seeds. Along with being rich in Vitamin E, sunflower seeds are an excellent source of selenium, another antioxidant nutrient that assists Vitamin E in repairing DNA.

Vaping: Is It Really A Healthy Choice? By Ariana Purcell most manufacturers in the U.S. claim their added flavor to the vape “juice” is generally recognized as safe, there has been little research conducted over the long-term effects of inhaling such substances into the lungs. Research by the American Lung Association shows the aerosol, or vapor, is not just flavorful water vapor. The liquid contains some of the same toxins and poisonous chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes. Among the substances found were aldehydes — organic compounds built up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and another atom or group of atoms to create a chemical formula which undergoes a wide variety of chemical reactions. Aldehydes are most commonly found in perfumes and dyes; in this case, these aldehydes are used to make the juice more fragrant.

S

moking e-cigarettes — also known as vaping — has become a very popular habit among youths. “E-cigarettes are now the most frequently used tobacco product among adolescents—some 2.1 million middle and high school students were e-cigarette users in 2017—far surpassing traditional combustible cigarettes,” reports the Child Mind Institute. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the first device resembling more recent innovations of e-cigarettes in today’s society was in 2003, developed in Beijing, by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik. These e-cigarettes didn’t hit America’s market until the mid-2000s, when the first import ruling of, “the tariff classification of a nicotine inhaler and parts from China,” was issued on August 22, 2006. By 2010, additional brands began to appear in the U.S. marketplace, as the e-cigarette was being promoted as an alternative, healthier way to smoke, or a way to begin the process of quitting traditional cigarettes. Advertising for e-cigarettes commenced on a large scale through television, print ads, and social media.

Traces of metal and other carcinogens were found in vape juice as well, possibly playing a role in lung and oral cancers. Although these juice pods can cause health risks by inhaling such liquid, there have also been reports of children and adults being poisoned by swallowing, breathing, and/or absorbing vape liquid into their skin or eyes.

Since 2010, packaging and advertising for e-cigarette devices and their accessories have become very targeted and streamlined—contributing to the sudden spike in use among adolescents. The Child Mind Institute reports, “Although vaping companies emphatically deny that they are marketing to young people, critics note such features in their advertising as youthful images and colors, animation, actors who appear to be under 21, and suggestions that vaping makes you happier and improves your social status.” The new sleek, USB-styled devices are accompanied with interchangeable pods (the part of the device that holds the nicotine liquid), available in all kinds of flavors, including several of the fruity variety.

E-cigarettes introduce harmful and unknown chemicals into the body and bloodstream, while certain agents reach deep into the lungs, potentially irritating the bronchi. E-cigarettes can increase blood pressure, heart rate, jeopardize the flow of blood to the heart, and restrict arteries. The vapor inhaled may cause inflammations in the mouth, increasing the chance of gum disease. Over time, inhaling these particles can cause what is known as “smoker’s cough.” Vaping can also damage the vital mitochondria, impairing many bodily functions.

One of the more recent changes made to the modern e-cigarette, or vape, is the feature of a larger battery, which enables the device to heat the liquid to a higher temperature, releasing more nicotine and potential additional toxicants. Although

Adding to the many potential health risks, is the well-known fact that vapes contain high levels of nicotine, in turn creating

higher chances of addiction. Nicotine exposure at a young age can result in dependency, and it can also damage adolescent brain development in the areas of learning, attention, and impulse control. Nicotine exposure contributes to the hardening of the arterial walls as well, which may lead to a cardiac issue or event. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began regulating e-cigarettes and other tobacco products in 2016. Sales and use of vapes have radically increased since then — 78 percent among high school students, with a 48 percent increase in middle school students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that nearly 38 percent of high school students, and 13 percent of middle school students, have tried vaping at least once. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) reported findings that the high levels of nicotine in current e-cigarettes may increase the frequency and amount of a user’s cigarette smoking in the future. While we don’t currently know the full effects of vaping, and what serious health risks could potentially occur in the longterm, we do know there is a growing epidemic among the youth of America. If you are considering the use of vapes, or know someone who is, the most important decision is becoming educated in the matter, while also educating others. Fruit and Veggie Washes By Lissie Lyles

T

hese days, fruit and vegetable washing products abound; and with good reason. Between the waxes, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and risk of contamination by humans, livestock or impure irrigation, it’s no wonder consumers want some extra reassurance that their produce is clean. Even if you only buy organic veggies, there is still a slight risk of contamination because of the size and scope of our industrial food system. But are these fruit and vegetable cleaning sprays safe, or do they just add chemicals residue of their own to your produce? Most of these products don’t come cheap either. Let’s take a closer look at some of their labels and see if they are really worth the price.

Plant-based ingredients and a short ingredient list, and no ingredients that are particularly eyebrow-raising.

Citrus Magic Fruit and Veggie Wash:

The good news is you can make your own fruit and vegetable washes at home with simple, safe and cost effective ingredients. Start with a bowl of cold water and add about three tablespoons per gallon of water. Add one of the following: raw apple cider vinegar, baking soda, or food grade hydrogen peroxide.

Ingredients: Water, Natural cleaners made from corn and coconut, Lemon oil, Sodium citrate (a natural derivative of citrus fruit), Glycerin (from coconut oil), and Grapefruit seed extract. Although this product has plant based ingredients and a short ingredient list, for example, Grapefruit seed extract has antibacterial action, the second ingredient listed is very vague, meaning there’s no way to know what it actually is, or if it’s actually safe. After all, sodium lauryl sulfates, which have been linked to cancer, derive from coconuts. Just because a chemical is extracted from a plant, does not make it safe by default.

Nature Clean Fruit and Veggie Wash: Ingredients: Water, sodium lauryl sarcosinate (food grade cleanser from palm oil), carboxyl methyl cellulose (cellulose gum), witch hazel (natural astringent), citric acid, potassium sorbate. Sodium lauryl sarcosinate has been cited by the environmental working group as a harmful ingredient that has been linked to cancer and other health problems. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning that it can drive the other chemicals deeper into your fruits and veggies.

Allow the produce to soak for five to 10 minutes. Make sure you’ve added enough water to cover them completely. Use a vegetable brush to scrub off any dirt or bugs, and then rinse and dry. Simple as that! As always, choose real food over food products, and wash your fruits and vegetables with gentle nontoxic substances! HB
