ery few individuals realize that 80% of their facial appearance with aging is due to sun exposure and subsequent skin damage. All the brown spots (“age spots”), broken blood vessels on the face, fine lines, and sagging skin are caused almost entirely by sun! Is your dermatologist a dermatologist and is he/she board certified?

Now there are training programs being developed to permit nurse practioners to receive a doctorate of nursing and call themselves “Doctor” as would a PhD in a specialized field. These nurse practioners (NPs) are NOT doctors of medicine as is a board-certified dermatologist.

Certification by the American Board of Dermatology is the consummate title addressed to a dermatologist based on their education and experience. If you see a “skin specialist,” it is your responsibility to ask of their credentials. Remember; a board-certified dermatologist is a medical doctor who has completed a minimum of twelve (12) years of training (four years of college, four years of medical school, and four more years in an internship and a formal dermatology residency program) to even become eligible to take the testing for board certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

Individuals seeking diagnosis and proper treatment of their skin disease can depend on board-certified dermatologists for their care.

This is also performed with minimal pain with results lasting 5-7 months and longer.

Speaking of inspiration, readers who have been disheartened by the growing secular trend of separating Christ from Christmas won’t want to miss the article about the Schings Family Christmas Pageant on page 5. Through their annual, humble re-enactment of the Nativity, this Toledo-area family has managed to keep Christ at the center of the holiday season for the past 22 years.

While there’s no question the holidays

can be chaotic, there are steps you can take to avoid becoming emotionally overwhelmed at this time of year. In the article on page 36, Barbara Cruz, a counselor with Mercy’s Employee Assistance Program, shares her expert insights on how the simple choices we make—from the events we attend to the foods we eat—influence our level of holiday stress.

One very common source of holiday stress is the pressure of having to serve a delicious, satisfying meal when you host the family get-together. Family’s annual pageant keeps Christ at the center of Christmas

The GRAND-306 Study is looking at whether an investigational medication (a new medication) that is under development is safe and effective in people with type 2 diabetes, who have difficulty in controlling their blood sugar levels, and have experienced heart problems or have risk factors for heart disease.

With our VA contract, we can accept veterans who are not well enough to go home after their hospital stay.

We also have long-term beds available, should the need arise.

You may be eligible to participate in the GRAND-306 Study if you: • • •

are 18 years of age or older have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have had heart problems or stroke, or have risk factors for heart disease, such as being a smoker, having high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

If you decide to join the GRAND-306 Study, you will continue taking your current diabetes treatment as usual and will be given the investigational medication, or placebo (which looks the same as the investigational medication but contains no actual medication). to take as well.

The GRAND-306 Study will last about 6 years, and will require approximately 23 visits to the study center and scheduled telephone calls. The study will include a screening period to confirm that the study is suitable for you, a study medication closing period, and a follow-up visit.

ur society’s trend toward secularization has resulted in the gradual separation of Christ from the Christmas season. In fact, the name “Christmas” itself, now deemed insensitive or offensive to people of other faiths or the nonreligious, has largely been supplanted in popular usage by more innocuous terms such as “The Holidays” or simply “The Season.”

What “The Holidays” are about is difficult to pinpoint. Based on portrayals in advertising and the entertainment media, we know they have something to do with shiny lights and ornaments, elves and reindeer, dietary overindulgence, and, of course, costly gift exchanges. But with Christ out of the picture, what we’re actually celebrating at this time of year is something of a mystery.

Not so for Rose and Dan Schings, parents to five children, grandparents to 14 grandchildren, and great grandparents to eight great grandkids (with another on the way). For this Toledo-area family, the reason for the season will always be Jesus, whose humble birth they’ve gathered together to re-enact in an an-

nual pageant every Christmas Eve since 1991.

“Our Christmas pageant started back when our grandchildren were quite young,” Rose recalls. “Watching them open Christmas gifts one after the other without any true Jesus Joy left me feeling as though something had to happen to make this birth real for them.”

So, the following year, her creative juices flowing, Rose dug out a batch of old sheets and pillowcases—

which, she recollects fondly, were the first colored sheets the family ever owned—and converted them into simple period costumes for the children to wear in the pageant. Longer lengths of sheet with twine belts became togas, and shorter pieces were used for headgear. Tinsel served as headpieces for the little angels.

“One of our children read Luke’s gospel of Jesus’ birth as many of our eventual 14 grandkids came trooping into the room with angels proclaiming the gospel, shepherds coming in from the fields, Mary and Joseph coming to the forefront and sitting down, Jesus’ birth announced, and the baby being brought forth wrapped in a blanket.

We’ve even had a drummer boy starting out the procession,” Rose says.

Of course, peace doesn’t always reign supreme during the Schings’ Christmas pageant—kids will be kids, after all. “We’ve had tantrums, headgear being torn off, and loud arguments over who exactly should be Mary that particular year, but we always carry on. The gospel proceeds and it happens. For a few glorious moments, he is in the room with us—our baby Jesus,” says Rose.

After the performance of Jesus’ birth, the whole family joins together in the singing of Christmas carols. Last year, the Schings’ great granddaughter, Hannah, added a new musical touch to the evening, playing a hymn on her guitar to wrap up the pageant.

“Now that we have great grandchildren taking part in the pageant, it’s wonderful to see the joy in their parents’ eyes as they carry on the family tradition,” Rose remarks. ❦

treatment will entail, their rights as a participant, potential risks and benefits, alternative therapies, etc. They are never subjected to any treatment or test that wasn’t fully disclosed and discussed in the informed consent process.

With respect to placebos, they are very rarely used in cancer clinical trials. An example of when one might be utilized is a symptom control trial.

For instance, if a study were being done to determine the efficacy of a drug developed to reduce fatigue in cancer patients, a placebo might be used along with the new study drug. Half the participants would start the trial on the placebo and the other half would start with the study

drug. Then the two groups would switch, with the placebo group now taking the study drug and vice versa.

Researchers could then compare how the placebo and study drug correlated with the participants’ reported fatigue levels.

Dr. Mowat emphasizes one further point about the impact of community clinical oncology programs such as TCOP: “In communities that are doing these trials, the physicians end up being right up there with university doctors when it comes to accepting best practices and new standards of care. That ‘raises all ships’ and improves the overall level of care in the community.” ❦

• When talking with someone who has hearing loss, get their attention before starting to speak to them. Simply call their name or tap them on the shoulder. By doing so, they’ll be ready to listen with both ears.

• If your family member doesn’t understand what you said, try rephrasing it.

• Ensure the lighting in the room is bright. Dim lighting makes it more difficult to see faces and read lips, which comes in handy for those with hearing loss.

Believe it or not, we all have the talent of reading lips, but we might not rely on it too much.

• If there is live singing, avoid speaking until the music has concluded. Again, the less competition for hearing, the better the social experience will be.

• To assure your family member heard you correctly, ask them to repeat what you said.

• To enhance communication at your next family gathering, talk with your other family members so that they are all aware and on the same page as to how to communicate effectively.

Heartland Rehabilitation offers hints for a healthier holiday season

The GRAND-306 Study is looking at whether an investigational medication (a new medication) that is under development is safe and effective in people with type 2 diabetes, who have difficulty in controlling their blood sugar levels, and have experienced heart problems or have risk factors for heart disease.

You may be eligible to participate in the GRAND-306 Study if you: • • •

are 18 years of age or older have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have had heart problems or stroke, or have risk factors for heart disease, such as being a smoker, having high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

If you decide to join the GRAND-306 Study, you will continue taking your current diabetes treatment as usual and will be given the investigational medication, or placebo (which looks the same as the investigational medication but contains no actual medication). to take as well.

The GRAND-306 Study will last about 6 years, and will require approximately 23 visits to the study center and scheduled telephone calls. The study will include a screening period to confirm that the study is suitable for you, a study medication closing period, and a follow-up visit.

hile few of us have time to spare in our hectic schedules, Heartland Rehabilitation Services advises that we give ourselves the gift of at least 15 minutes per day to do some exercise, especially over the holidays.

Exercise offers many physical benefits and helps reduce stress. Exercise programs such as boot camps, cross fit, circuit training, and HIIT (high intensity interval training) have increased in popularity and diversity.

Many of these are available at gyms or on DVD and YouTube videos, which allow you to do them at home.

There are still the infomercials for the E-Z glider, Total Gym and Bow Flex systems, and other pieces of equipment to buy for home use. These and many other “As Seen on TV” pieces are credible but are limited in the variety of exercises that can be performed, and storage becomes difficult due to their size. While they may come with the promise of quick results, many of them also come with a hefty price tag.

There are a few products that have made an impact in the therapy community as well as the fitness industry. These products are so simple that many consumers tend to overlook them. They don’t take up much space, and they don’t have a hefty price tag. They can provide a workout that includes strength training, resistance training, cardio, agility, and flexibility. The three pieces of

equipment include a band, exercise ball, and, most importantly, our own body/body weight.

The variety of possible exercises and the ease of use and storage make these simple pieces of equipment ideal to use to start your home gym.

Anyone starting an exercise program for the first time should always get clearance from their physician.

Once received, start slow, beginning at 5 to10 minutes, depending on ability, and work your way up over a period of weeks to a more intense workout of 45 minutes. It is always better to avoid overdoing an exercise program and exercising too vigorously in the beginning. Not only does it set you up for injury, but it also may set you up for a limited commitment.

The old saying “no pain, no gain” is a fallacy. When we start an exercise regime, many of us go too long and too intense in the beginning, wanting to feel the results of the workout or thinking that the harder the training, the quicker the results. If you haven’t exercised in a while or you typically only exercise every couple of weeks

(it’s non-routine or not a part of your lifestyle yet), this intense approach in the beginning can turn you off to making it a routine.

A simple approach to a home program is to make sure you go back to the basics and cover the following simple movements: pull, push, squat/lunge, hinge, one-leg stand, and, finally, some form of abdominal exercise. Here are some examples: • Pull: band row • Push: push-up (wall, knee, or regular) • Squat: wall squat with the ball at your lower back • Hinge: dead lift (body weight to start) • One-leg stand: stand on one leg and do a slight heel raise • Abs: a crunch while on the ball.

These exercises target major muscle groups of the body while working your core muscles (to balance and stabilize the body) simultaneously.

To progress in the exercises, simply increase weight and repetitions as well as the amount of time spent.

Additionally, during this time of year, be sure to remember the following four points: 1. Don’t skip meals—When extremely hungry, we do not always make good food choices. Eating small meals throughout the day will keep you from overeating at that party or buffet table. Healthy snack ideas on busy days are nutrition bars, cereal, oatmeal, and fruit.

2. Sleep—During the busy holiday season, many people do not get enough sleep. Sleep plays a very important role in weight gain. The greater the fatigue and stress, the more likely you are to grab unhealthy sweets and snacks to give you energy.

Instead, try to wind down 30 minutes before you go to bed and try to plan your schedule so you can get eight hours of sleep a night.

3. Relax—Taking just a few short moments each day to stop, take a deep breath, and relax, will help keep the stress level in check. Whether it is yoga, deep breathing exercises, reading a book, or taking a bath, decide what is best for you!

4. Indulge moderately—The holidays and parties offer special treats we do not usually indulge in, like pies, cakes, and candies. The best way to enjoy these holiday goodies without going overboard is to plan ahead.

Eat a healthy snack before heading to the party, and drink a glass or two of water when you arrive. This will help keep you hydrated and will fill you up so that you do not eat too much.

Choose one or two dessert items you would like to eat, and then fill your plate with fruit, veggies, and healthy items. Also avoid high-calorie beverages, which contribute to weight gain and are empty calories.

Make up your mind before the holidays begin to take small steps to stay active and eat healthy while still enjoying the holiday treats.

During this time of year, we are also a little more prone to injury due to weather and due to our inattention or lack of concentration. Injuries that we typically see from weather are related to falls outside (ice and snow); back/shoulder injuries due to picking up and carrying larger and heavier

boxes or items; working in the same position for extended periods of time while baking or wrapping gifts, plus not using good posture or taking a break. Also with the snow, we see back and shoulder injuries due to improper shoveling technique.

When you have an injury or an ache/pain that lasts for a few days and doesn’t appear to be getting better, don’t wait any longer; go see a therapist. The therapist can address the pain issue or injury as well as review with you proper body mechanics and movement so you can avoid injury in the future.

In many cases, you can schedule an appointment for therapy without seeing your physician first. This is known as direct access to therapy, and Ohio is a state that allows this.

is the season to celebrate the coming of our God to earth as a human being, as a baby born to poor parents in a poor land over two thousand years ago. I ask myself, “Why did he come? Why did he come the way he did? What does this have to do with me today?”

Let me share my reflections with

you as my way of bringing the celebration of Christmas to you as more than just a “holiday.”

First of all, let me tell you that I’ve been thinking a lot about the title of this article, “Bring Good News to the Poor.” I’ve been working on a Sunday retreat for some Secular Franciscans in Toledo, and that became the title of the talk. I’m reading my recent copy of Weavings (Nov/Dec 2013/Jan 2014), which has the title as the theme for the articles in this edition. I’m tying the title into the Christmas story (why Jesus came to earth), some significant events in the life of St. Francis of Assisi and his beloved friend St. Clare, and some of what Pope Francis

has been saying and doing regarding reaching out to the poor wherever and whenever we find them in our daily lives. It’s been quite an adventure and an eye-opener for me even as I reflect on how I reach out to the poor in my midst.

One of the scholars from the Franciscan Order, John Dun Scotus, shared a wonderful insight about the birth of Jesus in his writings several centuries ago.

He believed that Jesus did indeed come to save us, but he also believed that Jesus would have come even if we hadn’t sinned or needed him to save us from our sins. He believed that Jesus came primarily because God loved us and sent his only Son to be with us and show us how to live as human beings. I think it is important for those of us who call ourselves Christians to be aware of this love that God has for us and how that can affect our lives and our actions.

I’m not sure why Jesus came to earth under such poor circumstances, but that is part of the story. He was born in a poor little town in a stable with only the warmth of his mother and the breath of animals to keep

him warm. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that was done on purpose because that is the way most of the people on this earth come into this world. We all arrive with nothing but our little bodies, and we all leave taking nothing with us, not even our bodies. It’s only in the in-between times that we can see the distinction between the haves and the have not’s. It’s during that time that I think we are called to bring Good News to the poor, and to me that means sharing with others how much God loves them and how much I love them because of our common connection.

Remember when Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment and he replied, “Love God…and love your neighbor as yourself ”? In an article in the Weavings, mentioned above, Marilyn McEntyre comments that when Jesus said this, he didn’t mean “…’as if he were you,’ but something more startling like ‘because he is you.’”

eventh grade is the most dangerous age for girls,” states Trudy Hammer, author of The Gender Gap in Schools. Many researchers agree that it is a critical time both academically and emotionally for girls.

or children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect, it’s easy to feel forgotten during the holiday season—a time when most of us are enjoying family togetherness and exchanging gifts to show how much we appreciate one another.

By donating a new, unwrapped toy or making a monetary contribution to Lucas County Children Services’ (LCCS) annual Holiday Gift Drive, you can “Give the Best Gift Ever” to a child who might otherwise receive nothing and let him or her know that someone truly cares.

This year ’s Holiday Gift Drive, co-sponsored by the Friends of Lucas County Children Services and several community partners, is expected to provide gifts to as many as 1,500 kids in our community who are victims of abuse or neglect. These children either live with their families under LCCS supervision or reside with relatives in order to be safe. Gifts are needed for all age groups between birth and 18, but the agency is in particular need of items for kids of all ethnic groups ages three and under. Gift cards for teenagers are also welcomed. Collection for the Holiday Gift Drive is already underway and will continue through December 17.

“The theme ‘Give the Best Gift Ever’ really tells the story of our kids, because whatever you find it in your heart to give may truly be the best Christmas present they ever receive,” says LCCS Public Information Specialist Sherry Dunn. “We want people to realize that no gift is too big or too small. Whether it costs five dollars or fifty dollars, it really is the thought that counts. What matters most to our kids is the message that someone in the community cares about them.”

In addition to gift drive donors, LCCS has a tremendous need for individuals or groups willing to sponsor families served by the agency who need clothing, bedding, cleaning supplies, and other household items. In some cases, these family groups can be large, for example, when children are placed with relative caregivers who also have children of their own to support. “Resources for helping

these families are very limited this year, so if anyone is willing to come forward as a sponsor, perhaps as part of a church group or with co-workers, we’d love to hear from them,” states Julie Malkin, Public Information Officer for LCCS.

ver the past couple of months, I have shared with Healthy Living News readers the benefits of getting young children in the game of tennis as well as how tennis is a lifetime sport and can be a enjoyed by families together all over the globe.

When one watches TV coverage of tennis or reads about tennis in various publications, it is 99% of the time about professional tennis and individual competitions. I believe it is safe to say that not many folks out there realize the benefits and opportunities for people to participate with their friends on tennis teams.

One thing is certain, people will and do enjoy doing things with their friends. Tennis is no exception, and there are so many opportunities for people to play tennis as a member of a team. Here are some numbers that prove this:

“As medicine evolves, surgery evolves, and we’re branching out with a greater focus on robotics,” explains Dr. Palmer, who finds that today’s robotic technology, while just one of several arrows in the surgeon’s quiver, allows him to work on patients with an impressive degree of detail.

The robotic system that Drs. Palmer and Bais utilize is the state-of-the- art da Vinci® SI Surgical System, which provides 3D, high-definition visualization of the surgical site and three robotic arms, essentially giving the surgeon an extra hand to manipulate and fully control. Dr. Palmer notes that the instruments they use are “wristed,” meaning they actually twist on an axis (offering about 540 degrees of rotation) and can roll back on themselves. “With these instruments, we’re capable of doing things in the patient’s abdomen with finer detail than we can using our hands alone,” he says.

According to Dr. Bais, the da Vinci system has been around for about a decade and has mainly been used for procedures such as prostatectomy and hysterectomy. Traditional prostatectomy, for example, required a large incision in the belly, caused a lot of blood loss, resulted in a weeklong to ten-day stay in the hospital, and posed a significant risk of post-operative complications. However, when prostatectomy is performed robotically by a

skilled surgeon, the patient typically goes home in a day or two, experiences little blood loss, and resumes normal activities much more rapidly.

Dr. Bais observes, “In general/ colorectal surgery, robotics is relatively new, but we’re seeing similar results.

Procedures can often be performed through a single, small incision, and the patient usually goes home the same day. Plus, recovery times are shorter, patients return to work faster, and pain is minimal, often requiring no pain medications.”

The robotic procedure that interests Dr. Palmer the most is single-site removal of the gall bladder. Compared to traditional laparoscopic gall bladder surgery, which is typically performed through four small incisions in the abdomen, the single-site procedure is done through a single small (2- to 2½-centimeter) incision that can be hidden inside the belly button. Three instruments (including two robotic arms manipulated by the surgeon and a static arm controlled by an assistant) and a camera are inserted through that single port. “It’s a neat procedure and the anatomy you get to work with is really fascinating. I’ve really developed a passion and love for doing it,” he remarks.

The biggest myth about robotic surgery is that the robot somehow performs the surgery itself. But the fact is, the robot is merely an adjunct to the surgeon’s hands and does nothing independently. The surgeon is in full and complete control at all times. The robotic instrumentation merely enhances the surgeon’s capabilities. As Dr. Palmer often tells his patients, “Robotics won’t make an average surgeon great, but it can make a good surgeon even better.”

What’s more, while robotics is revolutionizing surgeries, it hasn’t rendered all other forms of surgery obsolete. “We’re doing more and more single-incision gall bladder surgeries and colon resections using robotics, and the more you do, the better you get, but there’s always room for other

technologies,” explains Dr. Bais. “Not every patient fits into the robotics mold. For example, a patient who has had several prior abdominal surgeries, and therefore has a lot of scarring, may not be a good candidate for a robotic procedure. What patients are most concerned about is getting proper results, so they’ll often tell us, ‘Do whatever you’re most comfortable with.’”

Dr. Palmer agrees, adding, “Proper

use of technology is where robotics finds its niche, and many of the skills we use laparoscopically, we can do even better robotically because of the instrumentation. But we have the skill and experience to do procedures robotically, laparoscopically, or using an open technique, depending on which is most appropriate for the patient.”

Both surgeons acknowledge that robotic surgery is just in its infancy and are intrigued to see where the

technology is headed in the future.

They’re also pleased that they’re able to offer single-site robotic procedures, particularly gall bladder and colon resection, to the Toledo community, thereby filling a comparatively specialized niche.

Her physical therapy included, among other activities, using a NuStep recumbent cross trainer, range-of-motion exercises, and balance exercises using a ball. “It sounds simple to just stand there tossing and catching a ball, but when you have weakness in those muscles supporting the knee, it’s definitely not child’s play,” she emphasizes.

Davis also completed occupational therapy at The Laurels to help her manage everyday tasks, such as showering, dressing, and cooking.

She notes, “You don’t realize how many steps you take when you’re cooking. Occupational therapy helped me organize the process so I can take fewer steps—and more calculated steps—in the kitchen.”

While Davis credits her relatively rapid progress to the patience and encouragement of her therapy team, physical therapist Lynne Nidek notes that Davis’ personal motivation played a major role, as well. “We really didn’t expect her to be this mobile so quickly. We can encourage and motivate our rehab guests as much as we want, but they still have to take initiative—and Joan certainly did that,” she remarks.

Scott, a former respiratory therapist, had a complicated surgery to replace her right knee (her left knee had been replaced 10 years prior), performed by Dr. Nabil Ebraheim, on October 9 and began rehab at The Laurels on October 15. She’d been to the Laurels many times before when her mother, who had COPD and passed away three years ago, was a patient there. “I was out here every day to see Mom but never thought I’d be a patient here,” she says.

Scott’s knee joint was bone-onbone, which left her in constant pain, so she knew the time was right for surgery. An avid gardener who loves being outdoors, she decided to schedule her surgery for autumn so she wouldn’t miss the growing season.

The first night after she began rehab, she was in considerable pain and didn’t think she would be able to stick with it. But the next morning, Nidek came in to talk to her and persuaded her to stay the course.

“I also wondered what I was going to do with myself when I wasn’t actively doing rehab. So in addition to therapy exercises, I began walking the whole building every day,” she recalls.

Never one to sit still, Scott likes the fact that The Laurels has an open gym that rehab guests are encour-

aged to utilize whenever they wish in order to begin developing the good habits, responsibility, and accountability needed for success with their home exercise program.

Another benefit Laurels rehab guests soon discover is a strong sense of camaraderie with other guests and staff in the therapy room. “We get to share tips and experiences as well as encourage and motivate each other,” Scott says.

Now beginning outpatient rehab at The Laurels, both Davis and Scott, who have not yet been cleared to drive, take advantage of The Laurels’ van shuttle service to get to and from their rehab appointments. This service is offered free of charge to rehab guests who live within a five-mile radius. “It’s hard to find someone who is always willing and able to drive you to appointments and wait while you do your therapy. Thanks to the van service, we don’t need to impose on anyone to get here,” says Davis. ❦ The Laurels of Toledo accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and all private commercial insurances. here’s no convenient time to get sick. But with today’s demanding work and school schedules, getting in to see a primary-care physician for treatment during regular business hours can be extremely challenging for many families.

What’s more, because doctors can keep their offices open only so late, people who get sick at an inopportune time are often told to go to an urgent care center—where copays are apt to be higher than they are at a primary-care physician’s office. The extra out-of-pocket expense is even higher if you go to an emergency room for care.

In response to area families’ growing need for flexibleyet-affordable access to primarycare services, ProMedica has launched a new nighttime care center in Perrysburg that is open every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. The new center, called ProMedica AfterHours, is located at 1601 Brigham Drive in Levis Commons and is open weekdays from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and on weekends and holidays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“We recognized that some people have difficulty getting on their primary-care physician’s schedule, especially in winter when the volume of sick patients is particularly high,” explains Cindy Edwards-Tuttle, EMBA, FNP-BC, a ProMedica Physicians director of medical operations. “So

we asked ourselves, how can we meet families’ needs in a more timely and affordable fashion—in other words, how we can provide the right care at the right place and at the right time for the right cost? The answer was ProMedica AfterHours, which is available to patients of all ages 365 days a year and costs the same out of pocket as a regular office visit.”

ProMedica AfterHours is staffed by highly-trained certified nurse practitioners who are fully qualified to diagnose and treat patients as well as prescribe medications. Nurse practitioners are healthcare providers who typically practiced for several years as registered nurses and then returned to school to earn a master’s degree or doctorate in advanced practice nursing.

E d w a r d s -Tu t t l e emphasizes that nurse practitioners, while independent providers, have collaborative agreements with physicians who provide oversight and are regularly available for consultation.

AfterHours is for patients with minor medical complaints that they would typically bring to their primary-care physician, such as a cold, flu, rash, minor infection, simple headache, low-grade fever, sore throat, earache, etc. The facility also offers sports physicals on a walk-in or callahead basis, which is great news for parents who find out at the very last minute that their child must have a

physical by the next day in order to play on the team.

Patients should not go to AfterHours for medical emergencies, such as broken bones, chest pain, or head injuries; diagnostic procedures, such as bloodwork or x-rays; or management of chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

“However, if a relative visiting from out of town forgets to bring his or her medication for a chronic condition, we can prescribe seven to ten days of the medication if they come in to see us first,” says Edwards-Tuttle.

ProMedica AfterHours is open to walk-ins, or patients can call the facility at 419-291-0130 any time during open hours to inquire about wait times or to schedule an appointment to be seen that same evening. Very little time is wasted sitting in the waiting room. In fact, patients can expect to be seen within about 15 minutes of their arrival, and the whole experience typically takes no longer than about 30 minutes.

To promote continuity of care, all communications, prescriptions, and recommended follow-up will be shared with the patient’s primarycare physician. Patients who don’t have a primary-care doctor can be connected with a ProMedica Physician who is currently accepting new patients. “Also, AfterHours in Perrysburg has a relationship with ProMedica St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room and urgent care, so patients who might need, for example, sutures or x-rays, can get call-ahead reservations to expedite the process once they get there,” Edwards-Tuttle notes.

ProMedica AfterHours accepts most insurances as well as self-pay patients. It is not necessary to be a ProMedica Physicians patient to be seen. My friend Mike’s experience is the perfect example. “Chaplain Julie’s visit was the turning point in my recovery. She gave me hope,” said Mike. “I felt like I was in a train wreck. I am a positive person, but was so near despair at that time, I thought I would never leave the hospital.”

Mike was referring to Chaplain Julie Beitelschees, Supervisor for all ProMedica Health System’s Chaplains. Chaplain Julie offered much hope and comfort to Mike and his wife Debbie when she visited them at Toledo Hospital. The Berchers are active Catholics, and Chaplain Julie has been an ordained ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Pastor for 25 years. They were a good fit.

his first surgery. She explains her position: “A chaplain sees patients, sometimes by referral, and makes regular rounds in the ICUs (Intensive Care Units) and other floors. We often visit the ICUs for the first couple of days, asking them if they want us to call their church. A chaplain is there to meet people’s needs, of any or no faith. We try to be there for people, to be present with them and provide a caring presence for them. Any time a person is in the hospital, it is a crisis. A chaplain offers comfort and

The event is spearheaded by Clegg and local Wreaths Across America volunteer coordinator, Vietnam veteran Mel Harbaugh. Clegg and Harbaugh have worked together to raise funds for the wreaths. The cost of each wreath is $15, and they continue to move closer to their $21,000 goal.

Happy Holidays – Or Are They?

Well, here we are again at that magical time of year which isn’t always so magical.

It seems every year there are more places we have to be and more things we need to do, both of which can impact our ability to enjoy this season. So what can we do to retain our joy and our ability to spread good cheer?

The most important thing to think about is balance. We all need to figure out how to best use the assets we have available to us, be it time, energy or money. Try not to over schedule yourself or the rest of your family. One way to do this might be to have one gathering for multiple members of your extended family to take the pressure off trying to attend several events.

Though all the hustle and bustle can be fun it’s important to make sure we all get enough rest, and down time in order to recharge our batteries, physically, emotionally and spiritually. If something seems to be too much to do, give yourself permission to skip it.

We also need to be respectful and aware of our individual financial situations. It’s easy to give in to impulse buys or the urge to pamper those we love, but that can create mountains of stress when it’s time to pay the rest of the bills. We’ve all heard this before but a gift from the heart really does carry more meaning. So consider giving a friend, neighbor or family member some of your time in lieu of a purchased gift. Sharing a cup of tea and some holiday treats just may be the best gift that person will receive this year. It also might be the best gift you give yourself!

oxygen can reach damaged areas and help tissues to heal faster. It really can be an effective treatment for acute and chronic damaged tissue.”

The patient in the chamber experiences no feeling of that increased pressure, but might have the sensation of “popping” ears, much like a person in an airplane as it takes off or lands. Gum chewing or swallowing helps manage those sensations, and a nurse is on hand to offer assistance.

Once the correct pressure is reached, the patient is fitted with a collar attached to oxygen and exhaust hoses. A plastic hood is attached to the collar and sealed, and the patient breathes in the 100% oxygen. The treatment typically lasts for 60-90 minutes, during which time the patient can read, watch TV, talk to the nurse, or even sleep. At the end of the treatment, the pressure is slowly returned to normal. The hood is removed, and the patient is able to leave the

The Center offers a variety of strategies for teaching children on the autism spectrum. Applied behavior analysis teachers observe the autistic person and provide information on missing skills. The teachers use concise instructions and a reward system. The TEACCH teaching method provides an organized school environment with a strict schedule, visual teaching methods, and short, clear instructions. A sensory integration component helps autistic children with repetitive behavior or sensory issues, and many children report liking the multi-sensory room, which features a soft play area, interactive equipment that makes changes to the environment using sound and lighting, and a large swing with multiple “sitting” styles to suit each client’s needs.

Although the cost of services is much lower than in hospitals, many insurance companies will not cover the cost of the treatments. There are still many families who cannot afford to pay but receive benefit from the

generosity of friends and supporters of Sara’s Garden. Fundraising activities this year have included a golf tournament, a tailgate party, and, scheduled for December 14, a “Jingle Bell Jog” 5K marathon in cooperation with the Wauseon Parks and Recreation Department.

lmost every day, I am confronted with questions about the eye.

There are many misconceptions, beliefs, and opinions in regard to the field of ophthalmology, the eye, and one’s vision.

All the questions are valid and good questions, but many are based on “old wives tales” or stretches of the facts that they heard from a wellmeaning friend or relative. So, here are some of the more frequently asked questions with the appropriate answers.

Can reading in dim light hurt my

eyes? Dim light does not hurt or damage one’s eyes or vision. It may cause eye fatigue or strain, but this is only while reading in dim light. Reading with good light is more comfortable and can reduce eye fatigue, especially as we get older.

Will my children’s eyes be harmed by sitting too close to the television? There is no evidence that sitting too close to the TV affects the eye. Like reading in dim light, it may cause eye fatigue and strain.

Will wearing the wrong glasses hurt my eyes? Generally speaking, wearing

the wrong prescription may cause blurred vision, but in virtually all cases, it will not damage one’s vision. Children under the age of six, however, could possibly permanently damage their vision by wearing the wrong prescription. Amblyopia, or “lazy eye,” is often caused in young

children when the retina is not stimulated by good, crisp vision early in life.

Do you perform “laser” cataract surgery? I am asked this almost every week. While lasers are used often by ophthalmologists for many conditions, they have never been used for cataract surgery.

Will eye exercises strengthen my eyes?

There is no evidence that “exercising” the eyes will help the eyes or the vision with very few exceptions, such as the condition known as convergence insufficiency.

Can using a computer hurt my eyes? Using a computer can cause a whole host of ocular and non-ocular symptoms. These include eye strain and fatigue, dry eye syndrome, and blurred vision as well as headaches, neck pain, and back pain. Collectively this is referred to as “computer vision syndrome.” These symptoms are generally not harmful, but they are certainly bothersome and annoying. Most of these symptoms can be reduced or eliminated by wearing computer glasses with anti-reflective coating, adjusting the height of the computer monitor, and applying artificial tears. Many patients for whom I have prescribed computer glasses have told me that the results are dramatic.

Will wearing contact lenses correct or reduce myopia (nearsightedness)? There is no medical evidence to support that wearing contact lenses permanently reduces or eliminates myopia.

Generally speaking, myopia is often genetically “pre-programmed” and typically nothing will alter its final outcome. Fortunately, myopia usually stops getting worse in most people by the end of the teenage years. It’s also fortunate that LASIK and other less common surgical procedures can effectively reduce or eliminate

Can eyes be transplanted if one goes blind? No. The eye is more or less an extension of the brain and is, in essence, part of the nervous system.

Nerves cannot be transplanted. The cornea, the clear window of the eye, can often be safely transplanted if it gets cloudy.

Will wearing glasses cause me to become dependent on them or strengthen my eyes? No. Glasses afford one the ability to see the best one can.

Glasses do not cause one’s optical error to get better or worse. Since people like to see their best, they ultimately like to wear their glasses and they may misinterpret this as becoming dependent on the glasses.

Are learning disabilities (LD) such as dyslexia and ADD caused by visual problems? While good clear vision is important to study and to learn, poor vision is not the cause of LD. Often, I am referred children with LD as part of the LD workup since it is so important to see well in school. Glasses will help the child to see well but do not “cure” LD. It is also a myth that eye exercises help learning disabilities. It is also very rare that children need “reading” glasses to do better in school.

Does a cataract have to be “ripe” before having cataract surgery? Actually, the earlier a cataract is removed, the safer and easier it is for the ophthalmologist to remove it. One does not have to wait until the cataract is “ripe.”

Can using my eyes too long or too much be harmful? No. Eye fatigue and strain may result from using the eyes for extended periods of time, but this problem goes away when the eye is at rest.

There are many other misconceptions about the eye and vision.

Hopefully, the few issues discussed in this article have answered some of these commonly asked questions.

ost seniors are not frail or helpless, but some of our loved ones need a little extra help and a few need a lot. There are some simple strategies that can help keep your loved ones safer and independent as long as possible.

Often with advancing age, an individual becomes more fragile, and living at home becomes difficult, even risky. Health problems and side effects from medications can increase chances of injury in the home when an elderly person is already having a harder time getting around. The risk of falling, which results in broken bones, increases. According to CDC statistics, the leading cause of death among adults 65 and older is falling.

Several national and local senior resource organizations recommend “seniorizing,” or helping your loved one create a safer home environment.

Amenities such as zero line showers with grab bars, high-rise toilets, onperson call systems, and an abundance of variable lighting options are no longer luxuries but common features in many safety-conscious senior homes.

Families in the know are clearing frequently used pathways inside the home and out, looking for things that would cause tripping, turn an ankle, and impede doing things that were once routine. They’re ensuring smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and kitchen fire extinguishers are in proper working order. They are replacing worn-out rubber tips on canes and walkers, picking up throw rugs where feasible, and checking edges of carpets for frays.

These families are helping put groceries away within easy reach (preferably eliminating the need for a step stool at all), ensuring phones are easy to read and use (for important calls including 911), making sure that

proper attire is available year-round, including warm clothing this time of year and low-heeled, comfortable shoes with traction.

As we age, our natural inclination is to look to ourselves and not reach out for help. We might think that if we don’t need help, we’re not “old” or “helpless.” As it becomes more difficult to compensate for hearing or vision loss, memory lapses, or mobility problems, we worry about being seen as somehow less than our former selves. The result, sadly, is that our world becomes smaller.

In an October address to a meeting of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Pope Francis declared that protecting children and elderly people is a “choice of civilization.” Further, he commented, “Children and the elderly represent the two poles of life and also the most vulnerable, the most often forgotten.”

As family, we yearn to know that wherever they reside, our loved ones are safe. Sometimes that can be at home; sometimes we can only breathe a sigh of relief when we have back-up of another kind.

ack in October, on our annual fall pilgrimage to Savannah, Shirley and I made a short detour to Pleasant Hill, KY, just southwest of Lexington.

The attraction there is the restored Shaker Village that dates from the early 1800s. You might think of Shaker Village as a cross between Colonial Williamsburg and Sauder Village.

Among the crafts, women were more likely to be occupied with spinning thread from wool or flax and weaving it into cloth. The Shakers kept flocks of sheep and controlled the entire production process from wool on the hoof to finished garment.

We watched a spinster card wool between two paddles so that the fibers lined up in the same direction in preparation for spinning into yarn. Then she put on her weaver’s hat and demonstrated how the dyed skeins of yarn are woven into patterns on a loom.

Though the Shakers stressed the moral virtues of the simple life, the tools and skills required by spinning and weaving illustrate that even simple technology is a lot more complicated than you might think. Passing Sr. Donna performed a speedy rendition of “20,000 the shuttle back and forth on the Shaker Songs.” Despite the lame joke, her singing loom looks easy enough. Before

the weaver gets to that step, however, hundreds of different threads need to be precisely strung on the loom so that a pattern emerges on the finished cloth. Fortunately for weavers, then and now, there are traditional formulas that can be followed so that calculating how many threads of which colors and where they are to be placed is not necessary.

Unless, that is, the weaver wants to get creative and design a new pattern. Shakers, though, were not as enthusiastic about novelty as they were about maintaining the virtues of the simple life.

Because Shaker farming practices were widely admired, there was a market for their vegetable, herb, and flower seeds as well as their crafts. The Shakers published Charles Grossman’s The Gardener’s Manual in 1835. It offered practical advice that is still relevant, but, within that context, it also claimed that a garden is “an index of the owner’s mind.”

Hospice to offer free grief workshop

ospice of Northwest Ohio will facilitate a two-hour workshop—Facing the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One, for families or individuals dealing with the death of a loved one—on Sunday, December 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Being held at the Toledo Hospice Center, the session will enable participants to break into groups with others their age to share, learn, and support each other through the grieving experience.

As we walked down the lane past the 1820 Meeting House, a young black woman emerged and began to sing. When several more people stopped to listen, she invited us in to learn more about the important role played by music in Shaker worship.

Sister Donna said that, with long, diligent study and practice, she had learned to sing 20,000 Shaker songs.

Not only that, she could do it less than ten minutes and requested someone with a watch to time her.

So, she sang “Twenty—ee thousan-and Shaker-er saw-ongs!”

How long did that take?

“About six seconds,” said the volunteer timekeeper.

A pretty lame joke.

But her singing really was excellent, a cappella, and combined with her demonstration of Shaker dancing and shaking.

Donna concluded with the Shaker song that almost everybody knows thanks to Aaron Copeland‘s Appalachian Spring and about forty TV commercials:

he typical holiday season brings a dose of good cheer, festive lights and decorations, rich family traditions, parties and feasting, exciting gift exchanges—and a hefty helping of holiday stress. This last element— stress—may seem like an unavoidable byproduct of all the others, but, according to Barbara Cruz, PCC, CEAP, a counselor with Mercy’s Employee Assistance Program, it really doesn’t have to be.

“There are so many major stressors at this time of year, and successfully managing them comes down to making choices,” she says. “The decisions we make when it comes to the social events we attend, the foods we eat, the presents we buy, and so on, can either increase or decrease holiday stress.”

The health effects of holiday stress Holiday stress impacts your physical and emotional health in a variety of ways. When stress takes hold, your muscles become rigid and your shoulders and neck stiffen, leaving you vulnerable to headache, backache, and a host of other aches and pains. The myriad of obligations that must be met can seem overwhelming, leading to feelings of anxiety.

Thinking of people who are no longer present, such as a spouse who has passed away, can lead to depression.

Cruz points out that there are simple steps we can take to mitigate the health effects of holiday stress. “Exercise, such as walking and stretching, is very helpful. Another easy stress reliever that you can do virtually anywhere is deep breathing.

Take slow, deep breaths and slowly release them until you feel yourself relax. If you’re grieving the loss of a loved one, it’s important to give yourself some quiet time to think about the person and to share what you’re feeling with others. You may also find it helpful to seek out a community support group or talk with a counselor. Just remember that you don’t have to go through it alone,” she says.

Make a list It’s also very important to decide what you really want to do and how you want to spend your limited time and energy during the holiday season. Otherwise, continually running from place to place will leave you feeling overwhelmed and resentful.

Consider all the social events you’re invited to attend, pick and choose the ones you really want to participate in, and mark them on your calendar.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice: when our children become too sweet

ine-year-old Luke1 sat across from me, staring at the floor, silent and lethargic. Expecting to hear about baseball games or swimming when I inquired about summer plans, he just shrugged without a hint of emotion or enthusiasm. Luke was in clinic that day to be counseled on his morbid obesity and elevated insulin levels; a BMI approaching 40 had clinicians gravely concerned.

As the dietician asked about eating and exercise habits, I watched Luke nod apathetically when his mother mentioned that he was “on the heavier side,” implicating his insatiable sweet tooth and aversion to all things vegetarian. As the conversation progressed, his mother also mentioned that encouraging her son to bathe regularly was a battle and pointed out areas of “dirtier skin” that “just didn’t seem to wash off.” The “dirt” that the mother was describing was actually thickened, darkly pigmented areas of Luke’s skin, a condition called acanthosis nigricans, localized to the folds of skin surrounding the child’s neck and

elbow joints. This skin condition, especially in overweight children, is a dermatologic sign of insulin resistance.

So what is insulin and why do we care if our children’s bodies aren’t responding to it? When a person eats a meal, the food is broken down into glucose (sugar), which the cells of our body need to

function. Our bodies only need to use a certain amount of this glucose right away—the rest of it is stored in our muscle and fat cells. When the glucose in our blood reaches a certain level, this signals an organ called the pancreas to make insulin.

Insulin sends a message to our fat and muscle cells to open up channels so the extra glucose can get into the cells to be stored for later use.

When kids regularly eat foods that are high in sugar or fat (which can be broken down into sugar), the damage done to the body goes far beyond the physical appearance associated with obesity and acanthosis. In response to consuming too many calories, the body must produce abnormally high levels of insulin in order to prevent the levels of glucose in the blood from getting too high.

Over time, the fat and muscle cells can become less sensitive to insulin’s signal to store glucose—they are “resistant” to insulin’s signal. The pancreas works harder to produce more insulin, sensing that there is still too much sugar

in the blood, but since the cells aren’t responding to insulin, the glucose in the blood remains high (a condition called “hyperglycemia,” which eventually may result in type II diabetes).

If not properly addressed and managed, this insulin resistance and high blood glucose can lead to significant health problems, including type II diabetes (previously an exclusively adult-onset disease) and obesity. Serious heart conditions, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, asthma, sleep apnea, chronic inflammation, reduced immune function, and psychosocial concerns are only a few of the dangerous consequences that can further develop

from obesity.

As insulin resistance and type II diabetes continue to increase in prevalence in our pediatric population, it is critical that physicians, patients, and parents work to manage risk factors for these diseases and realize the gravity of the implications for their health. t’s that time of year once again— when Eating Well can fast become Eating too Well! The holidays are accompanied by favorite traditional foods that we get to enjoy but once a year, such as my grandma’s yummy date bars and homemade eggnog.

Who wants to miss out on any of that?

Unfortunately, our favorite holiday foods tend to be real calorie bombs.

In fact, the average American consumes approximately 4,500 calories and 29 grams of fat during a traditional Thanksgiving dinner— and that doesn’t even include all the nibbling and sampling leading up to dinnertime! By the end of the holiday season, studies show, the average American has gained one to two pounds. Some even pack on as much as seven to ten pounds over the holidays.

Now, no one wants to adhere to a strict diet over the holidays. We want to enjoy the bounty of traditional favorites. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessary to bring extra pounds with us into the New Year. Here are six simple tips for enjoying the holidays without weight gain:

Set goals If you were losing weight or really watching calories before the holidays,

Instead of loading up on cookies and other rich desserts, try healthier options such as chocolate-dipped strawberries, pumpkin pie with fatfree whipped topping, or sugar-free Jell-O with fruit (there’s always room for that!).

Plan, plan, plan!

choose the items you really want.

Why waste calories on a dinner roll when you could have a small dessert instead?

If you go out to eat, try to peruse the restaurant’s menu online so you can make a healthy yet enjoyable choice ahead of time instead of choosing a calorie-dense entrée on impulse.

Also, be sure to “think your drink” throughout the holiday season. Alcoholic beverages can add a lot of mindless calories if you’re not careful. Set a limit, and try to alternate alcoholic drinks with water.

Above all, remember that the holidays are for spending time with family and friends. Food is certainly an important part of many family traditions, but it’s important to balance calorie-dense choices with lots of fruits and vegetables. Also, don’t let your exercise regimen falter.

Brisk walking and strength training are great ways to counteract those heavy holiday meals. If you do splurge a little this season, don’t beat yourself up over it. hen winter arrives, we often get ear and hearing questions from people who are planning to go scuba diving or snorkeling while on vacation in warmer, sunnier places than Northwest Ohio. Whether diving in a local lake or quarry, or a more exotic ocean location, the diver must learn proper ear care to prevent damage to the ears, hearing, and inner ear balance system. Simple problems, such as swimmer’s ear, to more permanent damage from barotraumas can harm the delicate ear structures.

Shop smart Allowing yourself a little dietary leeway during the holidays doesn’t mean it’s okay to throw caution to the wind.

You should still plan your menus to include fruits and vegetables, lean meats, seafood, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Read labels to identify foods that are nutrient-rich and low in fat and sugar. To shave even more calories, go easy when adding nuts, cheese, cream sauces, gravy, butter, and whipped cream.

Start the party out light Keep in mind that appetizers and hors d’oeuvres tend to be loaded with calories and it’s easy to overeat these bite-size items—especially if you’re hungry. Try to offer light-yet-satisfying appetizers, such as shrimp cocktail, veggies and low-fat dip, and fruit kabobs. Also, try to cook with

The main diving-related injuries to the ears are from lack of pressure equalization while descending and ascending. To understand why diving can damage the ear structures, a review of basic ear anatomy is needed.

The outer ear, including the ear canal which ends at the eardrum, is open to the outside environment and is typically filled with air, or water when diving. The outer ear experiences the same pressure as the outside environment. The ear drum separates the outer ear from the middle ear and is made up of a thin membrane.

The middle ear is an air-filled cavity housing the three middle ear bones. It is not open to the outside environment. The only way air can move in and out of the middle ear is through a thin tube called the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube connects the ears to the nose and throat area. It is normally closed to hold air in the middle ear space. It opens momentarily when you swallow or yawn many times each day. cavity. When it occurs, you may hear a faint clicking or popping sound.

Beyond the middle ear is the inner ear, which is the sensory organ for hearing and balance. It is fluid filled, and this fluid cannot be compressed.

There are two flexible windows that connect the middle ear to the inner ear. These windows can be compressed and damaged.

So, to get back to diving and the ears, scuba diving can cause ear pain and damage because diving subjects the ears to greater than normal pressure changes. Even diving down six feet can stretch the eardrum and cause bruising and pain. The key to

successful diving is proper equalization of the ears early and often enough during the dive. There are multiple techniques to equalize the ears. It is important to be taught proper ear equalization by certified diving instructors and/or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician.

For ear equalization to take place, the lining of the ears, nose, and throat should be as normal as possible. You should be free of nasal, sinus, allergy, or cold symptoms. The irritation and inflammation from sinus or allergy trouble can narrow the Eustachian tube and restrict the air flow in and out of the middle ear space. Talk with

your physician about treatment for allergy or sinus symptoms well before your scheduled dive, and make sure that he or she medically clears you to dive.

Some consequences of not equalizing the ears while diving include pain, fluid and bleeding into the middle ear space, rupture of the eardrum, as well as more serious damage to the inner ear accompanied by vertigo and hearing loss. Another problem for divers is when one ear is equalized but not the other ear. This can be due to wax occluding an ear canal, trouble with the Eustachian tube, or other pre-existing ear conditions. The pressure differences, as well as the temperature of cold water entering the ear canal, can cause temporary vertigo, which will make the dive very unpleasant and could jeopardize safety.

Guidelines for recreational scuba diving will give you specific risk conditions that may prevent you from diving. Regarding the ears, diving is not recommended for those people who have a history of middle or inner ear surgery or mastoid surgery, inner

ear disease, eardrum perforation, current pressure equalizing tubes in the eardrums, recurrent ear infections or sinus infections, and facial nerve paralysis.

Many of these conditions could prevent you from being able to equalize your ears, or further damage to the ear could result. Extreme caution is recommended for these conditions, and close consultation with an ENT physician is strongly recommended.

Both can cause irritation and swelling, leading to a poorly functioning Eustachian tube, and ruin your chances of a safe and enjoyable dive. Diving instructors are a wealth of knowledge regarding proper diving techniques. Ear, nose, and throat physicians as well as allergy specialists can provide medical care to keep the Eustachian tubes, sinuses, and middle ears functioning well. earning to drive is an important and exciting rite of passage for every teenager. For parents of teens, however, the excitement is tempered by the knowledge that their child will now be exposed to all the hazards of the highway. Of course, these driving dangers are greatly compounded once winter weather sets in, as it soon will in Northwest Ohio. Driving in winter conditions can be a harrowing experience for the most seasoned driver, let alone for a young person taking to the roads for the first time.

The following tips will help keep your teen driver safe when faced with slick or snowy driving conditions:

Make sure all systems are “go”

First, it’s vital to ensure that the vehicle your teen will be driving is properly maintained and prepared for winter driving conditions. Vehicle batteries can really take a beating in cold weather, so be sure to have the battery tested at the outset of the winter season to verify that it’s in good condition. For better traction, consider putting winter tires on the vehicle.

Compared to all-season tires, winter tires can boost traction by as much as 50 percent. It’s also a good idea to install winter windshield wiper blades on the vehicle to provide the best possible visibility in snowy conditions. Furthermore, make sure the vehicle’s brakes, heater/defroster, windshield wipers, belts, hoses, and radiator are in good condition and functioning properly and that all of the lights and signals are working.

Drive only if necessary

Parents, before allowing a teen driver to get behind the wheel in severe winter weather, ask yourself, “Is this trip really necessary?” Teens do need to acquire winter-driving skills, but the best time for learning is not when driving conditions are seriously compromised, for example, when the roads are extremely slick during or following an ice storm or when snow is blowing and drifting and visibility is even further reduced by darkness.

Let commonsense be your guide.

Ideally, teens should be exposed to winter driving gradually and under controlled conditions to the extent possible. One good approach is to take your teen driver to an empty parking lot, so he or she can get a feel for winter driving without putting themselves or other drivers in danger.

Clear the car completely

Make sure your teen understands that when snow accumulates on a vehicle, it’s important to clean it off completely.

Drivers often make the mistake of clearing the windows and signals but leaving snow on the roof, hood, and trunk. Snow left in these areas can blow or avalanche suddenly onto the windshield, obscuring the driver’s vision, or blow onto another driver’s windshield with the same result.

Alert them to the fact that some areas are prone to icing more quickly than others— e.g., bridges and shady areas—and that road conditions can change dramatically, even over relatively short distances. For instance, while the highway may be relatively clear, allowing for normal-speed travel, the on- and off-ramps may be icy or snow-covered. Also, they should be advised that extra caution must be exercised when approaching intersections or in any situation in which it’s necessary to bring the vehicle to a complete stop to avoid colliding with other vehicles or structures. It’s wise to check your traction well in advance of the intersection to ensure that you can stop in time.

Slow down and space out

Teens must be taught the importance of adjusting their speed and following distance according to road conditions. Remember, the posted speed limit is a maximum and applies only when driving conditions are good. Anytime conditions are compromised by snow, ice, slush, or rain, it’s necessary to drive slower than the posted limit

and to brake and accelerate gradually. With respect to vehicle spacing, it’s recommended to at least double your normal safe following distance when roads are slick. Also, be sure to keep your eyes on the road further ahead, not just on the vehicle in front of you. If you see brake lights off in the distance, be ready to stop. To reduce the likelihood of getting rearended by the driver behind you, it’s wise to signal turns earlier than you would when driving under normal conditions.

Give ‘em a brake lesson

When sliding on ice or snow, the first reaction of an inexperienced teen driver is to slam on the brakes. But this reaction, while natural, can have potentially disastrous results. Teach your teen that hard braking on ice will lock up the brakes and can cause the car to enter an uncontrolled skid. Instead of stomping on the brake pedal, keep the heel of your foot on the floor and apply firm, steady pressure with the ball of your foot. Again, it’s a good idea to practice this technique in an empty parking lot. ❦

t’s time again for holiday parties, family get-togethers, and the usual barrage of party trays, which, along with rather ordinary cold cuts and veggies, serve the standard selection of Cheddar, Swiss, Colby, and pepper jack cheeses. If this sounds all too familiar—and somewhat less than appetizing—why not elevate your taste in cheese this holiday season? There’s a world of cheeses out there to choose from, and you and your party guests might just enjoy the variety.

For spreading Dispensing with the cheese log does not mean you can’t enjoy cheese and crackers this Christmas. Soft-ripened cheeses, also called “bloomy rinds” (after the molds that leave a powdery bloom on the rind as they age and are responsible for their flavor), have a slightly runny texture, making them excellent for spreading on crackers, bread, or sliced fruit. Bloomy rinds also make a great choice for a cheese

board presented at the end of a fine meal.

The most famous soft-ripened cheeses are Brie and Camembert.

Both are French in origin, but they also have American-made counterparts. All Bries start out with a relatively mild flavor that intensifies as they age. In recent years, this flavor has been enhanced with the addition of mushrooms, herbs, pepper, and other seasonings. Camembert has a flavor similar to Brie but is generally sharper and slightly richer in texture.

Soft-ripened cheeses are best cut from whole, ripe wheels and spoil relatively quickly, so consume them as close to the day of purchase as possible. When perfectly ripe, they should be just starting to ooze.

Under-ripe bloomy rinds will have a stiff, chalky center. Brie and Camembert can be refrigerated lightly wrapped in waxed paper or plastic wrap, but you’ll want to restore both to room temperature before serving.

familiar with Edam, Gouda, and, to a lesser degree, Leyden. Protected with a red wax coating, these mild, subtle cheeses are great for holiday eating.

Edam comes in three forms: plain, aged, and very aged. Plain Edam has a bland to mild flavor and is softest in texture. As it ages, its flavor becomes more sweet and nutty. Very aged Edam begins to assume a somewhat grainy texture.

Like Edam, Gouda also comes in three forms. Regular Gouda is pale and has a slightly springy texture and nutty flavor.

Farmhouse Gouda has more tang and flavor than regular and will appeal to fans of mild Cheddar. Mona Lisa is the darkest and is aged the longest of all the Goudas.

It has a rich flavor reminiscent of browned butter.

Leyden has similar qualities to both Edam and Gouda, but it is usually seeded with caraway, cloves, or cumin. Farm-made Leyden is preferable to factory-made, having a more potent flavor.

Goat’s milk cheeses If you’re feeling a little adventuresome while planning your party, consider presenting some goat’s milk cheeses. Goat cheeses, generically called Chevres after the French word for goat, come from all parts of France and usually carry a specific geographic name. The malleable nature of goat’s milk curds makes it possible to mold these cheeses into all kinds of fanciful shapes, such as the familiar log, little balls, thick ovals, and pyramids.

Goat cheese varies in flavor depending on the region where it’s produced. Some of its subtle nuances may include clover, herbs, pine, walnuts, and pepper. To enhance its flavor, goat cheese is often crusted with herbs, nuts, or other coatings.

Wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap when refrigerating.

What’s that aroma?

If you can get past the aroma, brushed-rind or washed-rind cheeses, such as Limburger, beer cheese, and Havarti, add yet another flavor dimension. These cheeses get their taste from curing techniques that involve keeping the surface moist and warm to encourage the development of flavoring bacteria. The strong aroma generally concentrates in the rind, while the paste is relatively 44 December 2013 / Healthy Living News

mild. Some would suggest the best part of the cheese actually is the rind, but beginners usually prefer to have it cut away.

Limburger is by far the most familiar of these ripened, semi-soft cheeses. It has its origins in Europe, but a highly fragrant American version is produced in Wisconsin. All Limburgers have a thin, moist, pale-tan rind and a solid-white paste. The flavor can, perhaps, best be described as agreeably pungent and sharp.

Beer cheese also smells much stronger than it tastes.

This washed-rind, which originated in Germany, is milky-white in color from the rind to the past and is dotted with small holes. Its flavor is mildly intense, with the German originals being somewhat stronger than American versions.

If you’re looking for a mild, semisoft dessert cheese, give Havarti a try. This Danish cheese is also more appealing flavor-wise than its odor might suggest. Havarti is available plain or flavored with spices such as dill, caraway, or chives.

What’s your preference?

Whether your taste preference leans toward the mild or fairly intense, there are lots of cheeses you can choose to perk up your holiday menu. So, put out the traditional cheese log if you like, but consider complementing it with some international favorites. Your guests will thank you for it. ❦

Study reveals that distractions are dangerous for young pedestrians

ne in five high school students and one in eight middle school students crosses the street while distracted, according to a new research report, “Teens and Distraction: An In-Depth Look at Teens’ Walking

The study was developed to explore findings from a 2012 Safe Kids report that found pedestrian injuries among 16 to 19 year olds are on the rise. Teens now account for half of all pedestrian deaths among children 19 and under.

“Distraction is a big problem, both while driving and walking,” said Melissa Sanchez, Bike and Pedestrian Safety Coordinator, Safe Kids Greater Toledo. “Parents, talk to your kids to make sure they are paying full attention when crossing the street.

And we adults need to follow our own advice. If we put our devices down, our kids are more likely to do the same.”

The report presents an observational study that recorded more than 34,000 middle and high school students crossing the street in a school zone. Conducted in 17 states and 68 schools, the study looked at whether teens are crossing the street while distracted and, if so, what devices they are using. Alternative treatments for anxiety and depression

nxiety and Depression are no longer the taboo they use to be years ago. Our society is fast paced; our daily, even hourly, decisions about family, work, and leisure lead to stress and exhaustion. Is it any wonder that people turn to drugs for relief? With billions at stake, drug companies put their efforts into the next one-a-day forever drug and neglect other life-saving medications like new antibiotics, which a patient may take just once during their lifetime.

More and more people are getting diagnosed with a stress or depressive disorder. Stress radiates from many directions in our life: social media, newsfeeds, and instant phone messages bombard us with news from around the world. Our grandparents never heard about shootings in another part of the country or disasters in third-world countries. Today, we have instant, 24-hour news with bodies filmed floating down streets. It can be overwhelming.

Pharmaceutical medications that alter mood can be very effective for many people. But all have potentially powerful side effects, can be addictive, and tend to stop working after awhile. Interactions with other medications can be difficult to predict as well. For these reasons, more and more individuals are seeking nonpharmaceutical options.

Everyone who experiences anxiety or depression wants to feel better.

Most people want to feel more control over the sadness, lack of sleep, and abnormal eating patterns that

come along with this diagnosis. According to a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, “patients who suffer from depression may benefit more from acupuncture and counseling alongside their usual care, compared with usual care alone.”

Alternative therapies are not only being recognized by the medical field

but are being endorsed.

Researchers found that one in three patients were no longer depressed after three months of acupuncture, compared to one in five who received just medication. The conclusions were straightforward: “For people who have depression, who have tried various medical options, who are still not getting the benefit they want, they should try acupuncture or counseling as options that are now known to be clinically effective,” said Hugh MacPherson, the study’s lead author from the University of York in the UK. Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies showed “electroacupuncture to be as effective as amitriptyline for depressive symptoms.

Patients in this study who were treated with acupuncture had better outcomes with respect to somatization and cognitive process disturbances than did those treated with medication” (Samuels, 2008).
