ello, “Millennials”! Are the skin changes related to stress, pollution, smoking, and prior sun damage and tanning starting to show on your facial, neck, and chest skin? Are your jowls and neck starting to sag, and are you noticing that darkening is developing around and under your eyes, your pores are enlarging, or “age spots” are appearing? Do your friends question why you look tired all the time when you are not? Our editor, Jeff Kurtz, and I had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Jane and her husband, Bart, for a recent feature story on the Parkinson’s Foundation of Northwest Ohio. Mary Jane was a tireless advocate for patients and families dealing with this terrible disease. Her work and wonderful spirit will always be remembered.

Also, with water gardening, there’s no reason to be concerned if you end up with a design that doesn’t satisfy your aesthetic sensibilities at first. You’ll be dealing primarily with submerged potted plants and possibly some floating plants, so rearranging the layout is a simple proposition.

Choosing a container

ot, steamy July may not be the best time to introduce new plants to our gardens; however, it is the perfect time to take the plunge into water gardening or to experiment with various garden accents and artistic elements that complement established plantings.

Adding the element of water A water garden, fountain, or other water feature can add a veritable feast for the senses to any garden space—from soothing trickling and swirling sounds, to the lush beauty and fragrant aroma of water plants, to the eye-catching interplay of sunlight and ripples. What’s more, water gardening isn’t limited to those who have space enough to accommodate an actual pond. Regardless of how small your property may be—even if you’re an apartment or condo dweller with only a small balcony or patio at your disposal—you can still enjoy a small-scale composition of aquatic plants or, at the very least, a tabletop or wall-mounted fountain.

Not a green thumb?

Not a problem Right now, you might be thinking, “I’ve never had success with regular gardening. How will water gardening be any different?”

The beauty of most water garden plants is that they’re pretty resilient. As long as you’re able to provide at least six hours of sun each day, your odds of success are pretty high. If nothing

As with terrestrial container gardening, a wide variety of containers can be suitable for a water garden. The big difference is, you’ll obviously want to discourage drainage in a container used for water gardening. Large, plastic decorative containers are perfectly suited for this purpose provided the drainage holes are sealed with an aquarium-grade sealant before water is added. Half whiskey barrels are also a good option. However, they should be fitted with a molded plastic liner (sold at any garden center for just that purpose) or flexible PVC (10 mil or thicker). Otherwise, toxins will leach out of the wood into the water to the possible detriment of your plants’ health. Terra cotta and ceramic planters can also be used for mini water gardens, but they must first be treated with at least two coats of sealer to make them watertight.

Keep it coherent Choosing and placing garden accents is much like choosing and placing plant material. Your choices should complement one another and work together to create a coherent feel or theme.

Just as barberry or yucca plants would be out of place in a shade garden, a classical statue of Bacchus wouldn’t make much sense in a Japanese garden. On the other hand, a Japanese lantern, ornate crane statue, pergola, or bamboo deer chaser would be appropriate in that setting.

The theme of garden accents can be just about anything of your choosing—from classical to abstract to religious to whimsical. If angels or cherubs intrigue you, that could be your theme. Or perhaps you’re fond of a particular pet or wild animal that you’d like to see reflected throughout your garden. Memorial accents are a wonderful and dignified way to keep the memory of a departed loved one alive. Even those ubiquitous garden gnomes can be tastefully incorporated.

(Just be aware that garden gnomes are a common target for mischievous scavenger hunters!)

A lasting impression Perhaps the greatest advantage of garden accents is that they leave a lasting impression. They provide years of enjoyment without having to be watered, pruned, or replanted each growing season. ❦

Melanoma is on the rise but responsive to treatment in early stages

T

here’s both bad news and good news when it comes to melanoma. The bad news is, the incidence of melanoma is increasing and, of the major forms of skin cancer, it’s the type most likely to prove fatal if it metastasizes. The good news is, melanoma is very treatable and curable if caught early on.

“We’re absolutely seeing more cases of melanoma,” says Cindy Sutton, CNP, of The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers. “In fact, the rate of occurrence has been rising for at least 30 years and melanoma is 20 times more common now than it was several years ago. That may be partly due to the fact that more people are getting spots and moles on their skin checked out by their doctor, but it is a clear trend. If we catch melanoma early, in stage zero to two, surgery usually cures it. Past stage two, when the cancer is deeper in the skin, melanoma is more likely to spread.”

One of the difficulties in catching melanoma at an early stage is the fact that recognizing it can be challenging even for experienced healthcare practitioners. Some telltale signs include a growth on the skin that is irregular in shape rather than round, variation in color or shade within the same growth, a growth that is greater than 6 mm in diameter (larger than a pencil eraser), or changes in a mole that has looked the same for a long time.

“If you see any of these symptoms or have any suspicions about a mole or other growth on your skin, you need to see your family physician or a dermatologist right away to have it checked,” says Sutton.

Sun exposure is a known risk factor for melanoma. That includes tanning beds, which produce the same UVA and UVB rays that damage the skin and lead to skin cancer. Remember, there’s no such thing as a “healthy” suntan. If you want that bronzed look, Sutton suggests using spray-on tans or tanning lotions instead.

People are also at

increased risk if they have a strong family history of melanoma. “If you have a first-degree relation, meaning a parent or sibling, who has been diagnosed with melanoma, you need to see a dermatologist for a specialized skin exam yearly or every six months.

Also, if you have had a previous melanoma diagnosis, you need to

be evaluated by a dermatologist twice yearly,” Sutton advises. Other melanoma risk factors include having numerous moles, fair skin, a history of one or more blistering sunburns in childhood, and a job or avocation that involves excessive sun exposure.

The appropriate course of treatment for melanoma depends on several factors, and there’s no one-size-fitsall approach. Surgical excision of the tumor is usually the first step and may be all that’s necessary if the disease is caught early enough. But if it’s not caught early, oncologists still have a wide range of treatment tools at their disposal, including radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

“Some of the new immunotherapy and targeted-therapy options are getting very impressive results, so the treatment field is definitely expanding,” Sutton adds.

She also encourages patients to take a very active role in their treatment, noting that asking questions, seeking other opinions, and being an informed part of the treatment team not only empowers and encourages the patient, but also helps the oncologist and medical team make the best possible treatment decisions.

Of course, as with any potentially deadly disease, an ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure when it comes to melanoma.

Sutton recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 as well as wearing a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses whenever you’re going to be spending time in the sun. People who are routinely exposed to sun, whether on the job or during other activities, are advised to incorporate the application of sunscreen or a skin lotion containing sun protection into their morning regimen.

Why it's better to treat hearing loss sooner rather than later

dentifying and addressing hearing loss early brings many benefits.

From enhancing your quality of life to helping protect against several health consequences linked to unaddressed hearing loss, the case for early treatment is strong.

Perhaps the most compelling reason to never put off a hearing test and treatment, however, is simply this: We “hear” with our brain, not with our ears. When we have a hearing loss, the connections in the brain that respond to sound become reorganized.

Fortunately, for many people, hearing aids can provide the sound stimulation needed for the brain to restore the normal organization of connections to its “sound center” so it can more readily react to the sounds that it had been missing and cognitively process them.

In fact, the vast majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids. And dramatic new technological advances have completely transformed hearing aids in recent years, making them more effective, comfortable, and easy to use.

So the sooner you identify hearing loss and start using professionally fitted hearing aids if recommended by a hearing healthcare professional, the sooner you’ll begin to reap the rewards of better hearing.

The benefits of early treatment on quality of life and health For many years, experts have known the positive impact that addressing hearing loss has on quality of life.

Research shows that many people with hearing loss who use hearing aids see an improvement in their ability to hear in many settings, and many see an improvement in their relationships at home and at work, in their social lives, and in their ability to communicate effectively in most situations. Many even say they feel better about themselves and life overall.

More recently, however, researchers are discovering a significant link between hearing loss and other health issues, such as cognition, dementia, depression, falling, hospitalization, mortality, and overall physical and mental health.

To get a fuller sense of why it’s so important to treat hearing loss sooner rather than later, just consider the latest research on hearing loss and these seven health issues:

Risk of dementia A study by researchers at Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing.

Another study, by hearing experts at Johns Hopkins, found that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to develop problems thinking and remembering than older adults whose hearing is normal.

Brain shrinkage Results of a study by researchers from Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging found that although the brain becomes smaller with age, the shrinkage seems to be fast-tracked in older adults with hearing loss. Another study, conducted

by Brandeis University Professor of Neuroscience Dr. Arthur Wingfield, along with colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania and Washington University in St. Louis, used MRI to look at the effect that hearing loss has on both brain activity and structure.

Their study found that people with poorer hearing had less gray matter in the auditory cortex, a region of the brain that is necessary to support speech comprehension. Wingfield has suggested the possibility that the participants’ hearing loss had a causal role. He and his co-investigators hypothesize that when the sensory stimulation is reduced due to hearing loss, corresponding areas of the brain reorganize their activity

as a result.

Risk of falling A Johns Hopkins study showed that people in middle age (40-69) with even just mild hearing loss were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling. The intensive listening effort demanded by unaddressed hearing loss may take cognitive resources away from what is needed for balance and gait, experts have suggested.

Increased hospitalizations A Johns Hopkins study found that older adults with hearing loss were 32 percent more likely to have been admitted to a hospital than their peers with normal hearing. The study also found that older adults with hearing loss were 36 percent more likely to have prolonged stretches of illness or injury (lasting more than 10 days).

Mortality One National Institutes of Health-supported study of older people even found that hearing loss is tied to greater risk of dying for older men from any cause and particularly from cardiovascular causes. The same study found that men and women who used hearing aids, although they were older and had more severe hearing loss, had significantly lower mortality risk compared with hearing-impaired men and women who did not use hearing aids.

Depression Several studies have found a link between depression and hearing loss.

A Johns Hopkins study found that older adults with hearing loss were 57 percent more likely to have deep episodes of stress, depression, or bad mood than their peers with normal hearing. Another study showed that hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of depression in adults of all ages, but is most pronounced in 18- to 69-year-olds. Another study, conducted in Italy, looked at working adults—35 to 55 years of age—with untreated mild to moderate age-related hearing loss and found that they were more prone to depression, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity than those with no hearing problems. ❦

ability to “hear ” the sound accurately, but it also affects higher-level cognitive functioning. Specifically, it interferes with the listener’s ability to accurately process the auditory information and make sense of it.

For instance, in one study, Wingfield and his co-investigators found that older adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss performed poorer on cognitive tests than those of the same age who had good hearing. According to Wingfield, “The sharpness of an individual’s hearing has cascading consequences for various aspects of cognitive function. Even if you have just a mild hearing loss that is not being treated, cognitive load increases significantly. You have to put in so much effort just to perceive and understand what is being said that you divert resources away from storing what you have heard into your memory.”

f you are a runner or other type of athlete, you have probably heard the saying “Drink up” a thousand times— and with good reason. “Drink up” is the most important instruction that athletes of all ages should remember when participating in activities that sap their bodies of important fluids and electrolytes. (Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other body fluids that affect the amount of water in your body, blood pH, muscle action, and other important processes.) You should drink fluids before you become thirsty. If you wait until you are thirsty, then it’s too late.

Here are some guidelines for choosing the “right” fluids: • Avoid caffeinated beverages, such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and even energy drinks.

Caffeine is a diuretic, which pulls moisture from the body instead of replenishing it. In essence, caffeine drains the body of liquids.

• Next, avoid carbonated products, such as soda pop.

They increase the acid reaction in the stomach, which leads to the buildup of gas, discomfort, and the potential for nausea during athletic activities.

• Finally, avoid drinks with a high sugar content, such as fruit juice. Your body will pull water out of your bloodstream to help dilute the sugar, which actually dehydrates the body instead of hydrating it.

As for the best choice of liquid, drink lots of water. You should consume water before, during, and after competition to keep your body properly hydrated. Drinking enough water before and during your run will help your endurance and give you a better workout. Water cools the body and lubricates the joints.

You should drink two cups of water two hours before your run and then nine ounces every 15 minutes during your run or race.

Sports drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade, help the body replenish sodium and potassium quicker.

Keeping your body properly hydrated with the right fluids is essential to your safety and your fitness performance. Planning for the rising costs of health care

onger lifespans and rising healthcare costs are driving investors to control their financial exposure to uncovered bouts of care—particularly in retirement.

The United States spends more than $3 trillion a year on health care, or nearly $10,000 per person. Overall spending rose 5.8% in 2015,1 faster than the pace of inflation or wage growth.

Systemic efforts to rein in costs have met with some success. Consolidated hospital networks are better positioned to deliver treatment at scale and pass savings onto patients and insurers, and an increasing focus on preventative care aims to address medical issues before they snowball into chronic and costly conditions.

But whereas your incentives for saving for retirement are easy to digest—to be able to afford a desired lifestyle after your working years—planning for the less palatable aspects of old age can be more challenging.

20 years.3 Even with a robust portfolio, you may have trouble handling such large costs.

Many adults nearing retirement age are concerned about healthcare costs but unsure how to budget for them. A 2016 survey by the Nationwide Retirement Institute found that four out of five people cannot estimate how much they will have to pay for health care in retirement, even though nearly three-fourths say out-of-control healthcare costs are one of their top retirement fears.4

Those fears are warranted. Kevin McGarry, director of the Nationwide Retirement Institute, says the average retired couple now spends about $15,000 a year on health care, of which more than half goes to Medicare premiums, and they will spend somewhere between $259,000 and $395,0005 over the course of their retirement, depending on their lifespan and health conditions.6 Should they encounter serious medical trouble, the costs will be even higher. aware of the uninsured costs they may face in these cases. A stroke, for example, may prevent a person from moving the right side of his or her body. That means expensive 24-hour assistance.

Medicare Part A covers skilled nursing care provided in a skilled nursing facility for a limited time, but only after a qualified hospitalization.

However, Medicare will not pay for nursing homes when custodial care is the only care needed or care for conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Patients suffering from Alzheimer’s or other cognitive ailments may live for many years, all the while requiring assistance and, as the disease worsens, expensive hands-on care.

Protection for retirement savings By the time people reach their 30s, they tend to have a pretty good idea of the lifestyle they want to pursue, including in retirement, says Nationwide’s McGarry. There are a number of ways to save for retirement with your future healthcare needs in mind.

Investors in their 30s or early 40s, he says, may weight their retirement-funding strategies toward a portfolio of mutual funds or a managed-account solution to provide upside exposure to the market.

Given lower premiums for younger policyholders, long-term-care (LTC) insurance should also be a consideration, he said.

These days, only a handful of insurers offer LTC insurance, so another option may be life insurance with an LTC rider, which allows families to tap into the benefits they would receive upon the policyholder’s death while he or she is alive and requires care.

Another option for funding longterm-care expenses is to withdraw or borrow money from life insurance policies, or withdraw funds from or annuitize annuities. Note that either of these options would probably fall short of covering costs if someone needs care for many years.

McGarry says younger investors seeking less risk may want to couple mutual fund portfolios with some annuity exposure. Investors within 10 years of retirement may lean their portfolios toward variable annuities that offer market upside potential until retirement, and then guaranteed income.

Paying for unexpected costs A final consideration is what to do

when you’re faced with a large unexpected medical bill today. One answer may be a securities-based loan, which may be available to qualified Morgan Stanley clients. However, this strategy may have unintended costs, such as tax consequences, potential loss of future growth, or an imbalance in your portfolio’s asset allocation.

The Laurels helps students’ career futures come alive

t’s the end of the year for many seniors in the area who are carving out their futures with the tools they’ve gained in their high school careers.

Local Toledo Public School seniors in the Medical Technology program at Bowsher High School have found a world of practical and applicable resources available to them as their curriculum unfolded.

When Carrie Franks, MSN, RN, Medical Technology Instructor at Bowsher High School, recently took over this program, her goal was to bring the world of nursing to the students in a hands-on way. “I know that when real-life situations are encountered, learning takes place so much more naturally,” comments Franks. She hoped that when her seniors were able to get really up close and personal with the environment they would soon be working in, the learning process would click together to take their knowledge to a whole new level.

“The basic structure begins with TPS schools and their Career Technology Department,” notes Franks.

“Each TPS high school provides a

variety of Career Technology courses.

Contrary to the old school of thought, Career Technology programs are not for students that do not plan to attend college. As a matter of fact, 95% or greater of high school students that participate in a career tech program attend and graduate from college. In

the Medical Technology program, students obtain college credit that can be applied to their college of choice. My students will all have their STNA certificate and will be able to work in the medical field where most employers offer tuition reimbursement. It is an exciting time

to be in the medical field!”

The Medical Technology classes at Bowsher are growing by leaps and bounds. According to Franks, the enrollment/interest has already tripled for the 2018-19 school year. The Senior Med Tech class is preparing to take their written test but have all passed their STNA skills portion.

The juniors are wrapping up their Medical Terminology College Credit course. “We have accomplished so much this year,” remarks Franks.

Partnerships included The Laurels of Toledo for STNA clinicals, observation hours at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, volunteering in the Teen Program at Hospice of NW Ohio and Compassion Health Center, and community service of Christmas baskets for the homeless and local veterans. All the Bowsher Med Tech seniors are enrolled in college this coming year.

“When Carrie and I first spoke, I noticed the passion she has for her role as instructor and mentor for the students she is leading,” notes Jessica

Tonnesen, Director of Marketing at The Laurels of Toledo. “It was exciting to connect our nursing staff with the Bowsher students. We know our residents benefit in a big way too! Each student took away a lot of valuable knowledge, skill improvement, and a better understanding of the nursing and personal care involved in our healthcare setting.”

According to Ms. Franks, the students who came loved their time with The Laurels. “They want to come back and visit the residents they worked with,” she says. “Med Tech has made me more determined to succeed in my future,” states one senior. One of her classmates comments, “I Recommend this program to anyone who wants to work in the medical field!”

Keryn Werdehoff, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing at The Laurels, is a big advocate of the partnership.

“We loved having this experience with the Bowsher students! Our staff noted how professional and helpful their work was and how much the time meant to the residents they worked with too,” she explains. “We

Maintain your balance and dexterity as you age

H

ave you or your loved one been tripping? Are you or your loved one using furniture to walk around the house? Do you or your loved one genuinely get fatigued by getting up and walking around? Have you or a loved one developed a fear of falling?

According to Whitney Woodward, MOTR/L, Therapy Program Manager at St. Clare Commons, a Perrysburg senior living community, this is common as we age. Woodward has some advice to share on how to age in place while maintaining your balance and flexibility.

First and most important, according to Woodward, “Never do a balance program by yourself. You should always

consult your doctor before starting an exercise program and have a family member present when beginning any new exercise program.”

By age 65, Woodward recommends adding strength, balance, and endurance training to one’s daily routine.

“Light exercise for the arms and legs with light weights, or even without weights, is good,” she says. As we continue to age, she suggests adjusting the routine to fit the individual.

“Chair Yoga and Chair Tai Chi are great for the whole body and emphasize strengthening the core and breathing as well,” says Woodward.

As you age, you should begin modifying exercises from standing to sitting and/or lying down.

The following are simple exercises that can improve your balance and flexibility. Always get permission from your physician before starting an exercise program and have a family member present when beginning a new exercise program.

Sit to Stands

Back Leg Raises

Stand tall with your back facing a sturdy chair and your feet hip-width apart. If needed, hold onto the wall or a sturdy piece of furniture for balance. As you get stronger, perform the move without holding onto anything. From here, sit back and slowly lower your hips onto the chair as gently as possible. Pause, and without swinging your torso, push through your heels to stand up. Repeat 10 times.

Stand behind a sturdy chair, grip for balance. Slowly breathe in. Breathe out while slowly lifting one leg directly back without bending your knee or pointing your toes. You should not lean forward with the leg you’re standing on slightly bent. Hold this stance and count to one. Breathe in while slowly lowering your leg. Repeat this 10 times, then repeat 10 times with the alternate leg.

Side Leg Raises

Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. If needed, hold onto the wall or a sturdy piece of furniture for balance. As you get stronger, perform the move without holding onto anything. From here, lift one knee until your thigh is parallel to the floor (or as close to parallel as you can go) while keeping your torso straight and avoiding any leaning. Pause, then slowly return your foot to the floor. Perform 20 marches, alternating between legs with each march.

Take position behind a sturdy chair, feet slightly apart, gripping chair for balance. Slowly breathe in. Breathe out while slowly lifting one leg out to the side. Your back should be straight, and your toes pointing forward. Slightly bend the leg you are standing on. Remain in this position and count to one. Inhale while you slowly lower your leg.

Repeat these steps 10 times, then repeat 10 times with the alternate leg.

Woodward also believes that people with balance difficulties need to learn what is contributing to the problem.

Is your center of gravity off? Could medication be affecting your balance?

Even eyesight can be a factor. She advises meeting with a physical therapist to help determine what factors could be impacting balance and then have a personalized program developed for you.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about your balance concerns or apprehensions. Your doctor can write up orders for you to utilize physical therapy to strengthen your balance.

You need to take preventive action before something happens,” Woodward says.

Medicare or insurance often covers inpatient and outpatient physical therapy. “We always encourage people to talk to our business office at St. Clare Commons to check their insurance coverage,” she says.

and skilled residents, but also works with the general community on an outpatient level. “We work with each person on their own individual program to do what is best for them on their balance training and posture. We tailor a program specific to them and their medical conditions,” says Woodward.

What to do when hand pain interferes with your activities

I

t is that time of year when we need to stay on top of maintaining our flower beds so that we can enjoy their beauty. For those who love gardening, hand problems can turn a favorite pastime into a grueling, painful endeavor.

Heartland Rehabilitation’s occupational therapist, Debbie Warren, states, “You don’t have to give up your favorite activity, but you do need to protect your joints so your pain is less. The old saying ‘no pain, no gain’ is not the case with arthritis.

Pain indicates possible joint wear and tear.”

Arthritis occurs when cartilage is damaged. Cartilage, which pre-

vents bone from rubbing against bone in joints, cannot be regrown.

Rheumatoid arthritis involves an autoimmune disturbance, where the body attacks the cartilage, and can be addressed with medications; however, care should be taken to avoid making the inflammation worse during activity. Osteoarthritis is more commonly known as “wear-and-tear” joint damage. Good body mechanics and knowing when to rest are key principles in all activities when any type of arthritis is present. In some cases, supports and custom orthoses (hand splints) can decrease joint strain while improving independence and function.

So what are some ways to protect your hands while gardening?

Heartland Rehabilitation’s Hand Therapist, Joan McAdoo, has these suggestions: 1. Set an alarm to go off every 15 minutes to stretch your wrist and fingers. Start by making a hook fist by bending at the middle and end joints of each finger. Follow this by touching each finger to the thumb making an “O.” Next spread your fingers apart and bring them back together. End by making sure you stand and stretch your neck and back.

2. Use good body mechanics— avoid repetitive bending and twisting, which could increase strain on your muscles and joints. Remember, forward neck flexion can have an effect on the arms and hands. It is always good to consider raised beds whenever possible. Keep the activity close to your body so you can protect your shoulders.

3. Large handled tools are available to prevent tight gripping. Good Grips has various tools for the kitchen and garden.

4. Ergonomic tools, including those with bent handles, are available to help keep the wrist in a neutral position to decrease strain on your

forearms, wrists, and hands.

5. Long-handled tools can reduce the need to stretch and reach while weeding.

So it is possible to do what you love without having pain and damage to your joints. Warren also states, “Consider hiring help to do those activities you don’t enjoy. If your love is flowers, then have someone else do the mowing and trimming.

It is important to save your energy and joints for the gardening activities you love.”

fever, is brownish in color and typically inhabits grassy habitat adjacent to woods. The deer, or black-legged, tick inhabits wooded areas and is known to transmit Lyme disease.

The type people most commonly encounter is the dog tick, usually while hiking, camping, hunting or walking a dog in the ticks’ preferred habitat,” she explains.

Dey also points out that traveling to other parts of the country can bring people into contact with different tick species, so it’s a good idea to research the types known to be present at your destination and to take any recommended precautions to avoid exposure when engaging in outdoor activities.

If a tick has attached itself to you, a member of your family, or your pet, the sooner you find and remove it, the better—especially from the standpoint of disease transmission. That’s because the longer an infected tick is allowed to feed, the greater your chances of contracting the disease.

To remove a feeding tick, Dey recommends grasping it as close to the skin as possible with fine tweezers or forceps and pulling it straight out, using steady pressure and without jerking or twisting. Do not squeeze or crush the tick in the process, or you’ll risk coming into contact with infected body fluids. “If mouthparts are left behind, they will usually be expelled on their own, or a doctor can remove them if necessary. Do not try to dig them out yourself or you could develop a secondary bacterial infection. Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Also, never attempt to remove an attached tick using ‘folk remedies’ such as applying gasoline, petroleum jelly, nail polish, or a hot match,” she advises.

After removal, it’s a good idea to place the tick in a container, such as a pill bottle or plastic bag, and record the date and location of the bite for future reference in case the victim becomes ill. Even a photograph of the tick can help your doctor identify the type of tick later on.

Tick-borne diseases can cause a wide range of flu like symptoms such

as fever, chills, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, rash, severe headache, and various others. An expanding rash potentially forming a bull’s-eye pattern is often seen in the early stage of lyme disease. The rash frequently appears within a month of an infected tick bite. Seek prompt medical attention if you experience these or any other unusual symptoms following a tick bite. “If you do suspect you have a tick-related disease, it’s very important to give your doctor a good history, including where you were when it happened, the size of the tick, where on your body it was attached, and whether it was engorged with blood, which would indicate it had been feeding for a while. Again, actually having the tick in a container, or at least a photo of it, to show your doctor can be very helpful in making the correct diagnosis,” Dey says.

To avoid contact with ticks and their potentially infectious feeding habits, Dey recommends the following personal-protection measures: • When walking in or around grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, try to walk in the center of trails and avoid contact with tall grass or other vegetation.

• Wear light-colored clothes so ticks stand out better.

• Wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt tucked into your pants, closed-toe shoes, and tuck your pant legs into your socks.

• Insect repellents can be used, but be sure to apply them in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s labeling.

Some chemicals used in tick repellents are safe for use on skin or clothing (e.g. DEET) while others are safe for use on clothing and gear but should not be applied directly to the skin (e.g. permethrin).

The CDC recommends using repellents with at least 20% DEET. Also, before applying any repellent to a child’s skin or clothing, make sure it is labeled as safe for use on children.

After spending time in tick habitat, use the buddy system to inspect each other thoroughly for ticks. If you’re alone, conduct the inspection using a mirror. It’s also a good idea to take a bath within two hours and tumble your clothing in the dryer on high heat for several minutes. Of course,

egular HLN readers know that I’ve written about the topic of organic foods in this column many times over the years. Going organic with the foods we eat is a frequent topic of debate, and the science on this subject is constantly doing flipflops, with studies contradicting each other on whether organic foods are more nutritious than their non-organic counterparts. Adding fuel to the fire is a recent report stating that imported organic foods may not actually be organic.

Despite the controversy, our nation is buying organic foods in significant quantities, with sales exceeding the $40 billion mark in 2016. In fact, a recent study revealed that over 82 percent of American homes stock at least some organic foods.

So what exactly does “organic” mean as applied to foods? The US Department of Agriculture National Organic Program defines organic foods as those produced without manmade chemicals as fertilizers, genetic engineering, radiation, or sewage sludge. Organic farmers can use only specific allowed pesticides, which tend to be made of natural substances and ingredients.

That’s all fine and good, but are organic foods actually more nutritious?

For years we have said they have the same nutritional value as foods that are not organic. Recent studies show that organic foods may have slightly higher levels of phytochemicals and antioxidants. However, it’s not always easy comparing (excuse

the pun) apples to apples nutritionally speaking because many factors affect the vitamin and mineral content of food, such as soil quality, weather, climate, time of harvest, how long it has to travel, how long it sat in the store, how long it has been in the refrigerator, etc.

Other known benefits to going organic include: • Organic cattle have to be partially grass fed, making their beef slightly more beneficial in terms of fat composition.

• Eating organic reduces your exposure to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

• Eating organic limits exposure of farmers and farm workers to these chemicals.

• Organic farming is an example of good land stewardship and has a lower environmental footprint.

People who choose organic usually do so because they believe the foods are safer, healthier, and more nutritious. They also believe the animals on organic farms have better lives and that going organic is more environmentally friendly. The reality is a bit more complicated. Organic farms come in all sizes, from small family farms to massive factory farms, and some farms are allowed to use pesticides in approved amounts.

vegetables. Studies show that only 12 percent or less of Americans eat their five-a-day requirement of fruits and veggies, organic or otherwise. Also, whether you choose to go organic or not, try to buy from local farms and eat what you buy promptly to preserve nutrients and prevent food waste.

In addition, if a tight food budget is holding you back, focus on buying organic versions of the “Dirty Dozen”—the 12 fruits and vegetables that tend to have the most pesticide residues: strawberries, spinach, nectar-

ur society has become accustomed to immediate gratification.

When we want something, we want it now, and when a problem arises, we expect it to be resolved immediately.

However, when it comes to complex health issues such as chronic pain, there really is no quick fix, no “magic pill” that will stop the problem in its tracks. Instead, effective management of chronic pain typically demands a multifaceted approach that includes active participation on the patient’s part.

The history behind the current epidemic of opioid abuse and addiction in our nation clearly demonstrates the limits of the quick-fix approach to chronic pain. “Years ago, there was a growing belief that pain was being undertreated, which led to the increased use of opioids to manage chronic pain,” explains William James Jr., MD, founder and CEO of Comprehensive Centers for Pain Management. “As time went on, it became evident that this is problematic for two reasons: One, patients become tolerant to the opioids and need progressively higher doses to get the same results. At that point, you’re essentially treating the tolerance, not the pain. Two, a certain proportion of opioids end up being abused, whether by the person for whom they’re prescribed or by someone else who gets hold of them.”

The good news is, Dr. James and the rest of the team at Comprehensive Centers for Pain Management, consisting of board-certified physicians, psychologists, nurse practitioners, and physical therapists, have a wide variety of alternative treatments at their disposal for managing chronic

and acute pain of many types, such as degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, nerve injuries, neuropathies/neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, cancer pain, headache, and joint and ligament injury.

Treatments range from minimally invasive options such as nerve blocks and steroid injections, to non-surgical decompression for spinal stenosis, to more advanced modalities such as radiofrequency ablation, neck or spinal cord stimulation using implantable devices, and ketamine and other infusion therapies. Intrathecal drug delivery—the delivery of very small doses of pain medication directly into the intrathecal space or spinal fluid—is performed on a limited basis as well.

Obesity: a chronic disease with multiple health complications

M

ost people are aware that obesity is reaching epidemic proportions worldwide and that being overweight or obese is associated with a wide variety of chronic health problems.

However, less well known is the fact that obesity itself is a chronic disease and was designated as such by the American Medical Association (AMA) in 2013. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) made this same determination even earlier.

According to University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) endocrinologist Dr. Sophia Ali, “Until fairly recently, obesity was not recognized as a chronic disease. Instead, it was commonly viewed as a less important concern than conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Patients would often come in seeking treatment for these other

leisure activity in order to discourage sedentary behavior. However, between diet modification and exercise/physical activity, the former has much more influence on weight loss than the latter. “Research shows that exercise can help with weight loss—and there’s no question that it’s essential to overall good health—but studies overwhelmingly conclude it doesn’t help nearly as much compared to diet modification. If you don’t reduce calories, you’re not going to see weight-loss results,” she states.

Weight-loss medications can also help patients shed excess pounds, but as Ali points out, further studies are needed to determine the best step to take when these patients reach a plateau due to hormone changes that slow their weight loss and make them feel hungrier. “Perhaps the solution to this dilemma is developing new medications that target those specific hormonal changes, but we just don’t have the answer yet,” she adds.

Ali believes that patient education on how to achieve and maintain weight loss is essential if the current obesity epidemic is to be slowed. She also hopes to see a change in the way we discuss this chronic disease and characterize people who are

struggling with it. “We need to see obesity differently and encourage patients to talk about it honestly and openly with their healthcare provider without feeling afraid or ashamed,” she says. “The solution isn’t always about medications. It’s more about eating healthy, continuing exercise, and making lifestyle changes. If necessary, we can connect patients with a dietitian or nutritionist so they can learn how to eat better, or even write a letter to their insurer to see if they can help cover the cost of a gym membership or exercise classes.

There are always further options.”

Parents of children struggling with obesity are encouraged to take a close look at their kids’ diet as well—not just the foods they eat, but also the beverages they drink. Ali notes that in addition to unhealthy snacking and sedentary behavior, kids are consuming more sweetened beverages than is healthy for them.

Her advice to parents is to eliminate these sugary drinks, set a positive example by going outside with their kids to exercise and play, encourage participation in sports and other physical activities, and, of course, provide healthy meals and snacks.

Mercy Health brings much-needed hospital services to Perrysburg

R

ecognizing an opportunity to strengthen the availability of healthcare in our region, Mercy Health has opened a new hospital in Perrysburg off state route 25 that provides a broad array of healthcare services, from emergency and inpatient care services to cutting-edge oncology services. With the addition of this state-of-the-art facility, Perrysburg residents now enjoy convenient access to comprehensive healthcare services right in their own community.

Opening the first phase of its hospital campus in Perrysburg in April of this past year put Mercy Health on the leading edge of a growing national trend—bringing smaller, streamlined, more efficient, and conveniently accessible care centers to people where they live and work.

“We are the first hospital in Perrysburg, and this new facility satisfies a tremendous need for one-stop, close-to-home healthcare, which was identified by many of the patients in our emergency department and cancer center,” states Sunny Walters, Director of Patient Care Services at the new Perrysburg Hospital.

Walters further explains that the first phase of the hospital is made up of an adult 18-bed unit that offers a calming and quiet experience for patients and their families. Combined with the existing emergency and oncology facilities, the campus provides 24/7 laboratory services; imaging services such as x-ray, MRI, CT, ultrasound, and screening mammography; and, coming soon, nuclear medicine.

“Also on the same campus, we offer additional inpatient services such as case management, social workers, a clinical dietitian, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy,” she notes.

The only service currently unavailable at Mercy Health’s Perrysburg

campus is the ability to perform on-site surgery, but that will be changing soon enough. Construction is underway on a $58.6 million, three-story building that will house an additional 28 beds designed for patients needing one to two nights for inpatient treatment, as well as surgical suites and medical offices for primary care physicians and specialists to care for patients in the outpatient setting. When completed, the hospital will have 46 private rooms, allowing patients to stay close to home.

The new addition is set to open in spring of 2019.

“We’re committed to meeting the needs of the community, and in order to achieve that, our campus is growing by leaps and bounds.

We’re really looking forward to that continued growth in 2019 and beyond, and we’re gratified to have this opportunity to expand our healthcare services in Perrysburg,” says Walters.

A recent addition to the campus are regular business hours for Mercy Health specialists. In particular, Mercy Health is now offering appointments with neurologists, general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and vascular surgeons throughout the week. No longer will patients from Perrysburg and the surrounding community have to travel far from home to get the specialized care they need.

Community members can expect the same top-notch care that they have received from the Emergency Department since it opened in 2013.

In fact, the team at the Perrysburg emergency center has consistently earned patient satisfaction scores in the one percent of the country since day one.

I’m exhausted trying to stay healthy.

I

was drawn to this quote for two reasons. First, I love Steve Yzerman.

He’s a Detroit sports icon and my favorite Detroit Red Wings hockey player. Second, it is just a great quote that contains a lot of truth!

When I saw this quote, I was surprised that it came from a professional athlete who has a pretty rigorous exercise and eating schedule. It’s their job, right? It is, of course. An athlete needs to stay in shape by diet and exercise, but Steve was saying something that all of us know: Staying in good health is a lot of work. It’s not for slackers.

As my late mom used to say, “Your dad’s and my social life consists of going from one doctor’s appointment to different medical specialists, going

to dental appointments, running to the pharmacy for meds, and then, after a two-month break, starting all over again!”

Staying healthy takes a lot of time and juggling schedules. We start with our primary care doctor for a basic physical. But if there is a little something wrong with our heart, we go to a cardiologist. Then the cardiologist has us undergo a battery of tests, and after the tests we see the cardiologist again for test interpretation.

We then schedule another follow-up visit with the cardiologist. If there is a prescription, we travel to our pharmacist and pick up our drugs.

If we have joint pain, our doctor might order a visit to a rheumatologist who orders x-rays and additional tests, a follow-up visit, and perhaps an injection to keep the pain in our knees or hips a little less painful. Add a visit to the pharmacist for pills,

and another follow-up visit, and we certainly can become exhausted.

If our knees or hips need replacement, we start with a visit to an orthopedic doctor to see what is going on with our painful knees or hips.

X-rays follow, blood work is done, and we schedule our hospital dates for surgery. After surgery, we can expect weeks of physical therapy.

It makes a person not want to tell their primary care physician anything about their coughing or other aches and pains in their body. That would mean a visit to a bronchial specialist, more tests, and, again, a visit to the pharmacist.

Trying to stay in good health does take a lot of time, money, and anxiety.

But just by visiting our doctors, we can often prevent a small medical problem from becoming a serious one.

When you get your teeth cleaned at the dentist, the dentist often looks inside your mouth and tells you that there is a tooth or filling that they are

“watching.” They might not choose to do any dental work at this early stage, but you get a heads up on what might develop into something serious. You are being proactive, keeping up with your doctor on what is happening to your body.

That is excellent.

Another exhausting layer of trying

to take care of our bodies is that of nutrition. Your cardiologist might tell you to eat oatmeal, stay away from salt, and eat more fish. Well, you then start reading up on what fish you need to eat, what types of food have lower sodium. You search for heart-healthy recipes and try to find restaurants with healthy meals. Eating the right way takes study, planning, and going out to buy the nutritious foods you should be eating. And then you have to cook the meals!

Exercise is another part of our overall health. Taking walks during the week, swimming, playing outdoors with friends or grandkids, and walking the dog all help keep us in shape.

The saying “knowledge is power” can help us maintain our good health.

We all try to do the required things to stay healthy. Keeping up with medical discoveries, research, new ways to treat pain, etc., is a powerful part of our personal health. So, when you get a bit overwhelmed about keeping up the good habits that you know will keep you healthy, just think of Steve Yzerman’s quote: “I’m exhausted trying to stay healthy.” Cut it out and put it up over your bathroom mirror. ❦ Sister Karen Zielinski is the Director of Canticle Studio. wo months ago, I began a series of articles sharing how sports can provide children tools for life, not just trophies and championships. As mentioned several times, championships and trophies are awesome and part of sports, but they come and go while the lessons that are learned during the high times and the low times stick with one for a lifetime.

As I started writing this monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s article, I was looking for some examples of how sports are greater than the wins and losses. Sure, we could talk about the never-give-up attitude on display in the Cavs comeback series win versus the Celtics. We could also talk about dealing with mistakes as seen in the Cavs mistake in game one of the NBA finals. However, there are two events that I would recommend all of you look up online and share with your kids. One is where a baseball player from Auburn goes to catch a fly ball in the bottom of the 11th and it bounces out of his glove and over the fence, ending the game, which they lost because of this crazy series of events. His teammates can be seen going out and hugging him after this happened.

The other is from a high school baseball game where a pitcher from one team and the batter from the other team, who were very good friends, faced each other in what was the last out of the game. When the pitcher struck out his friend, his team went wild, as they were headed to the state finals. What was touching was the fact that the pitcher went to his friend and gave him a hug and provided support to him during this tough time for him. So once again, there are great lessons that can be learned about life if you look past the score.

Leadership Athletes understand what it takes to become good leaders. Athletes work as a unit to accomplish a goal.

Leaders are ones that can influence a person to accomplish tasks. By experiencing the process, athletes are able to experience what true leadership is and, in turn, eventually

demonstrate it themselves.

Learning Athletes are always striving to become better each day, and this can only be done by continuously learning. As they transition away from sports, they take with them the mentality that helped them become the best they could be on the playing field.

They can use that same mentality to become the best they can be and stay on the cutting edge in their field of choice.

Determination Athletes have a high level of determination, which is exactly what pushes a person to become the best they can be. Athletes can have all the resources in front of them; however, without the determination to become the best they can be, that means nothing. It is determination that will continue to drive former athletes when they enter the â&#x20AC;&#x153;realâ&#x20AC;? world. People who are determined and continue to learn are the ones who become true stars in their industry of choice and advance the quickest.

Goal setting Athletes understand how to set process, outcome, and performance goals. Good coaches understand the importance of goals and teach and show their athletes that having them allows for constant evaluation and provides focus away from mere results. Goals are a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roadmap of where they are headed. As athletes move away from sports, they take with them a new use for goal settingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;understanding and achieving their employerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals.

I hope you have enjoyed this series of articles and perhaps taken the time to share them with the young athletes you know. Remember, there is nothing wrong with the dream of being a professional athlete. However, the number of athletes who achieve this is very small. If it is meant to happen, it will happen. In the end, the lessons student-athletes learn from participating in their sport of choice will prepare them to excel long term in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;realâ&#x20AC;? world. â?Ś

ost organizations have a mission statement that reflects their core values, focuses their goals, and guides their activities. At Otterbein SeniorLife Monclova, the ministry’s mission statement reads: “In keeping with our United Methodist tradition, we seek to enhance the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons”—and it’s obvious from even a brief visit that the values contained in that statement are woven into every aspect of life in the small house neighborhood.

Otterbein SeniorLife Monclova is a post-acute-care facility, located at 5069 Otterbein Way in Monclova, Ohio, that offers services ranging from short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation to long-term care. The dedicated partners there are poised to serve elders with a wide range of conditions requiring compassionate

care, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and many other diagnoses that affect a person’s ability to live independently in their own home.

Cathleen Voyles-Baden, LNHA, Guide/Administrator at Otterbein SeniorLife Monclova, states, “We achieve our mission by treating all our elders with dignity and respect.

We are a ministry of dedicated service. We serve the needs of others, not just our elders and their loved ones, but also our partners.”

This commitment is strongly evident in Otterbein’s strategic objective to “liberate elders and those who serve them from the institutional care mindset.” In practice, this represents a significant departure from the traditional model of care in which decisions tend to be made for the convenience of the institution.

Instead, elders are given autonomy to choose what they are going to do and when they’re going to do it.

Mealtimes—called “convivium”— provide a good example of resident autonomy at Otterbein SeniorLife Monclova. “Family-style dining is offered at all three meals, and elders participate in the entire process from menu planning and meal prep to setting the table and sitting down to eat. And instead of serving elders prefilled plates on a tray, we bring food around the table and ask each person what he or she would like and how much, just like families do at home. The partners share in the process as well, with each shift playing a part. For instance, third

shift preps the meals and prepares the baked goods so that first shift has extra quality time to spend with the elders in the morning,” says Voyles-Baden.

Elders are encouraged to participate autonomously in the life of the community in other ways as well, such as cleaning their living spaces or washing and folding laundry with help from Elder Assistants.

In addition, elders can take part in a wide variety of group and one-onone activities, including innovative programs such as Music & Memory and Opening Minds through Art. Voyles-Baden notes that Music & Memory can be a powerful tool to help elders with conditions such as dementia or depression connect with the emotional memories associated with their favorite music, which helps to reduce agitation while improving mood, behavior, and social interaction. The music is delivered through an iPod and headset, and the selections are highly individualized based on input from the resident’s family members.

Elders enjoy their own rooms with private bathroom and shower facilities, but each home also offers a cozy common area with a television as well as an outdoor patio for socializing.

What’s more, each house features a beauty shop so elders can look and feel their best. “Plus, we’ve gone to considerable lengths to avoid that institutional feel, so elders aren’t subjected to distracting noises like overhead paging and beeping. We prefer to hear the sounds of home, like jovial conversation and laughter around the dinner table,” remarks Voyles-Baden.

I

n our office, we often see patients who are not only concerned about getting healthy but also about staying healthy. They see their aging parents with heart disease, diabetes, and chronic pain and want to know what they can do to get back to, and maintain, their optimum health as they themselves age.

Many embrace a holistic approach to health. Our office refers patients out for drug therapy and surgery as a last resort, knowing that once they climb onto the drug bandwagon, it is very hard for them to climb back off. Powerful drugs can often have a cascading effect, whereby the side effects of one drug are treated by another drug and so on.

An example seen all too often are deficiencies in patients taking acid blockers over long periods. Without any acid in the stomach, the body is unable to absorb vitamins such as B12 and important minerals such as magnesium. Recent studies have also revealed that popping acid-blocking pills for a long period could lead to certain types of diarrhea and pneumonia and affect vital organs such

as the liver.

Other common drugs taken over the long term include cholesterollowering drugs, which have been associated with chronic debilitating muscle pain, increased cancer, diabetes, and a tendency toward neurological disorders. On top of this, the benefits of taking cholesterol-blocking drugs long term are not clear.

The famous JUPITER study, touted as a reason to take these drugs long term, has come under scrutiny. According to a report by ABC News, “...major discrepancies exist between the significant reductions in nonfatal stroke and heart attacks reported in the JUPITER trial and what has been found in other research... ‘The JUPITER data set appears biased,’ [the researchers] wrote in conclusion.”

The bottom line is that drugs serve an important role in medicine today, but one should be judicious in their use.

So what are some non-drug ways to regain and maintain your health?

in as well as using external holistic healing techniques from the outside.

It doesn’t matter what you put in the body if the body is not balanced to receive it, and it doesn’t matter what you do to balance the body from the outside, if you continue to consume toxic foods.

Patients relate that they are so inundated with health information and sales pitches that they don’t know what basic steps to take at the start of a health-conscious journey.

Our advice to patients is that the journey back to health can start with a few simple steps. First, packaged foods have little nutrient value and are loaded with preservatives, colorings, and taste-enhancers that are pure poison. The worst offenders are fast-food restaurants. Their food is prepared at a central location and must be preserved for shipment all over the world. Even fast-food salads are drenched in chemicals to keep them looking artificially “fresh.”

So Step #1 is to avoid all fast food.

Instead, try your local delicatessen where food is made fresh daily.

The second most important step is to avoid chemicals in your fluid intake. This means completely avoiding carbonated beverages, which are

laden with sugar, artificial colorings, and enhancers. Even the diet versions contain chemicals better left unconsumed.

A side effect of our addiction to pop is weight gain. The amount of sugar in these drinks is obscene.

And the diet versions mess with our appetite-control centers, interfering with carbohydrate metabolism and leading to hunger cravings.

Ever wonder why you can “supersize” your drink for just a few pennies more? Businesses know that the more pop they can get you to consume, the more likely you are to buy a $10 hotdog and large popcorn. So switch to non-carbonated beverages like tea and water. Fruit juices are good but still contain a lot of natural sugar, so try to dilute them. It’s easy! Just add a little more water to each glass, and you’ll find yourself adapting to the new taste after a short while.

Water out of household faucets has come under scrutiny lately. All treated water has some level of contamination in it that varies wildly over time.

To protect your family, all water consumed in the home should go through a home filtration system.

Alternatively, you can switch to bottled water. We advise refilling five-gallon jugs over using packaged water to reduce plastic solvents, which can accumulate in water that has been stored in plastic bottles over long periods.

Another thing we can do to improve our health is add movement.

Studies have shown that one doesn’t have to strenuously work out every single day to get health benefits. Start easy; walk around the block once a day.

Maybe add a 45-minute bike ride to aid in circulation of the legs and get the heart healthy. The point is not to go crazy, but to get in the habit of moving! Movement is life!

Now, we have been talking about how we can revitalize our inside through light exercise and being selective about what we eat. But how about balancing things from the outside? Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment based on the belief that we have channels of

energy crisscrossing the body in order to maintain optimum health and homeostasis within the body. This 2,500-year-old medicine holds the belief that imbalances in this energy can lead to faulty healing and the inability of the body to repair itself.

Having your body out of balance can leave you open to disease and inefficient healing.

Bringing the body back into balance can go a long way toward making a patient more efficiently healthy. The efficacy of acupuncture has been shown in adult post-operative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting and in post-operative dental pain. In situations such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, spinal pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, anxiety, and depression, acupuncture can be an effective adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative in a comprehensive management program.

Treating from the outside-in is all about establishing “balance” with the energies of the body. That is why all acupuncture workups include a comprehensive nutritional evaluation.

SHADE GARDENING beyond impatiens

ardeners blessed with sunny landscapes have all the luck. It seems most of the truly spectacular flowering plants need full sun—or at least some decent morning sun—to bring on those showy blooms. So, what can those of us who are stuck with a shady landscape do to create some visual appeal in the garden since we can’t really “say it with flowers”?

Well, there’s always impatiens, right?

While a shady plot won’t necessarily allow for the colorful profusion of flowers that is possible in a sunny location, the shade garden can be every

bit as stunning—though generally more subtle—as its well-illuminated counterpart. You just have to rethink your approach to planting a bit.

It’s about the foliage In the shade garden, foliage is your friend. Take care to avoid creating a dull, uniform “sea of green.” Instead, try to create visual interest by juxtaposing plants of varying foliage colors and textures. Different hues of green, gold, blue, red, gray, and white coalesce quite pleasingly in the shade garden, and contrasting textures add a touch of eye-catching composition.

For example, a blue-leafed hosta, such as ‘Halcyon,’ juxtaposed against one of the yellow hosta cultivars, such as ‘Midas Touch,’ and a red laceleaf Japanese maple—perhaps with a silver groundcover, such as Lamium maculatum ‘Beacon Silver’ thrown in for good measure—makes an undeniably impressive visual statement that rivals any color combination you can create in full sun. Setting variegated foliage against solid colors also grabs attention.

When choosing colors, remember that cool colors, such as blues and

grays, tend to recede visually into the background while warm colors, such as reds and yellows, tend to advance visually. Hence, warm-colored plants function well as accents that stand out against the cooler background of the shade garden. Whites, silvers, and grays really “pop” after the sun goes down, making plants with these hues, ideal choices for the shady moonlight garden.

To create the pleasingly subtle interplay of foliage textures that is so desirable in the shade garden, try to combine fine-textured plants like ferns and astilbes with broad-leafed plants such as hydrangeas and hostas (have you picked up on the fact that hostas are the true “workhorses” of the shade garden yet?).

As in all garden design, a well-conceived shade garden incorporates plants of varying heights and forms, with the larger specimens placed toward the back of the planting beds, medium-sized plants in the middle, and smaller plants, or border plants, in the foreground.

Of course, the delicate notes of a wind chime and the soothing trickle of a water feature are welcome elements in any shade garden, as well.

Flowers in the shade Although it’s mostly about the foliage in a shade garden, many flowering plants are adapted to life in the shade.

Of course, azaleas, rhododendrons, and dogwoods are usually the first shade-loving bloomers that come to mind. But what about astilbe, monkshood, foxglove, foam flower, fothergilla, sweet Woodruff, true geraniums (not to be confused with pelargoniums), coralbells, Siberian iris, and bleeding heart? That’s just a sampling of shade-tolerant plants that produce attractive flowers. Even hostas produce blooms that some people (and hummingbirds) find appealing. And don’t forget impatiens! Like hostas, impatiens may be ubiquitous, but they remain one of the best plant choices for introducing colorful blooms to the shade garden.

The conditions that produce shade— generally the presence of shade trees with canopies that overlap to varying degrees—also produce an interesting paradox that gardeners must take into consideration if they are to keep their plants healthy. That is, while shade gardens are generally cooler and more humid than sunnier gardens, all those big trees tend to compete for nutrients and moisture with plants growing in their shade. Not only do the shade trees’ canopies prevent rain from reaching the soil, but also, their ample surface roots tend to suck up any available moisture and nutrients present in the soil. Hence, regular watering and fertilization of your plants is necessary, even though the climate in the shade garden may suggest otherwise.

Complicating matters further is the fact that the cool, moist air in the shade garden is conducive to the development of fungal diseases on plants—leaf spots, mildews, etc.

So, while it’s important to water regularly to ensure your plants get the moisture they need, it’s a good idea to minimize the amount of water that splashes on the foliage

by watering directly at the base of each plant with a hose adjusted to a trickle or with a soaker hose rather than with an overhead sprinkler.

A Walk in the Park

It is what it is

On relatively clear days, we could see all the way to Mt. Massanutten, the ridge that runs down the center of Shenandoah Valley.

S

hirley and I think that flexibility is one of the chief benefits of the way we travel. Our Roadtrek motorhome is agile enough to take into our favorite cities like Savannah and park right on the street, and it is equipped with everything we need

for boondocking (camping without a campground) in the West. Because we rarely make reservations (i.e., commitments), we can choose to stay longer or move on whenever we feel the urge. We had planned, for example, to spend just one night in

Cave Creek Canyon near Portal, AZ on our way to White Water Draw and then Tucson. Enjoyed it so much we stayed for three. When the monsoons came to Colorado, we adjourned to the Tetons and Yellowstone up in Wyoming. When the fly fishing in Idaho disappointed, we continued down the Columbia River gorge to visit wineries and then along the magnificent Oregon coast to the redwoods of northern California.

In May, we set out for Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. We know from experience that the trees and wildflowers can be simply stunning in the spring. We always admire the stands of mountain laurel, azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, tulip poplars, and Paulownia. And a plethora of wildflowers too numerous to mention here. Plus the waterfalls, wildlife, and birds.

When we arrived at Front Royal, VA at the edge of Shenandoah NP, it was partly cloudy and 89°. Made us look

forward to the cooler temperatures up on the crest of the mountains. At Big Meadows Campground, Kyle at the registration desk said they were out of power following the fierce storms the night before. Still, it was lovely at the time. I seared a prime grade steak—our usual way to celebrate first night in camp. Even set up the Coleman camp oven and baked some biscuits.

Just when the biscuits were done, the rains came. Shirley and I eat out often (by “out” I mean outside), but we quickly took our supper into the Roadtrek as lightning crackled around us and thunder echoed through the mountains. We were not terribly disappointed—yet—because the sound of rain on the roof makes for good sleeping. Even so, Shirley checked the weather forecast on her phone. I tend to be skeptical about any forecast more than 24 hours out, but this time, unfortunately,

AccuWeather lived up to its name.

Uh, oh, nothing ahead but rain for the next two weeks.

So we considered our options.

How about diverting to Williamsburg? Nope. Assateague? Nope.

Outer Banks? Nope. Eventually she concluded that the best weather east of the Mississippi was in NW Ohio.

Who would’ve thunk it?

Over the next week we experienced all four kinds of weather: thunderstorms, heavy rain, gentle showers, and drizzle. Make that five—dense

mountain fog. “Well, it is what it is,” said Shirley. So we donned our hiking boots and rain coats to take short walks, determined to make the best of it.

In Shenandoah NP, Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the spine of the mountains. Elevations range from 712 feet at Front Royal to 3,680 feet at Skyland. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a continuation of Skyline Drive that travels an additional 469 miles to the North Carolina entrance to Great Smoky Mountains NP. The Parkway itself is a long, narrow national park that connects the other two. Elevations range from 649 feet at the James River to 6,047 feet at Richland Balsam. We do not expect spring flowering to occur at the same time at such widely varying elevations and over a total distance of 574 miles north to south.

The road, designed for sightseeing and recreation, is closed to commercial traffic. The maximum speed limit is 45 mph and quite often is 35 or 25 in stretches with particularly sharp curves and steep ascents or descents.

If you are in a hurry, you are in the wrong place. Seventy-five pullouts in Shenandoah and 280 along the 3/17/17 11:52 AM Parkway encourage frequent stops.

Numerous log cabins are preserved by the National Park Service as part of our cultural heritage.

Gaze down into the Piedmont to the east or across the Shenandoah Valley to the Alleghenies almost lost in the mist. (On this trip there was no “almost.”) Along the Parkway, the national park property is sometimes just a few feet wider than the road.

Unlike national parks in the West where wilderness may be expected, this is long-settled country with farms visible both far below and right up to the road. Most of those farms are in operation. Some are preserved historic sites. There are log cabins and barns erected by the earliest settlers. Near the Peaks of Otter there is the “modern” Johnson farm. The original 1852 log home was covered with clapboards and painted white

so, from a distance, it does not look all that primitive. Three generations of the family lived there and prospered. They grew apples and hauled them to Bedford, VA for shipment to England. We don’t usually associate international trade with mountain people of the South. The Johnsons also had bountiful harvests of potatoes, beans, cabbages, and tomatoes, but during the Great Depression, they found that their standard of living was not keeping up with the rest of the country—which, to make it even worse, was already setting a pretty low standard. They sold the farm in 1941, and it was acquired a year later by the National Park Service.

Even further up the scale from primitive log cabins is Flat Top Manor,

At Otter Creek Campground, we had a site right on the stream where I took advantage of the very best way to chill a bottle of bubbly.

It rained, of course, but there was no wind, so we rolled out the Roadtrek awning and enjoyed cocktail hour under its shelter.

In addition to that first-night steak, our refrigerator held salmon, pork chops, lamb chops, chicken, and shrimp. Even so, some of Shirley’s friends still pity her for being forced to rough it this way. On the subject of roughing it, allow me to recommend the Cobb grill because you can cook an entire meal with only a dozen or so charcoal briquettes. With the dome cover in place, I roast chicken and baby back ribs. The outside of the grill stays cool to the touch so, just in case it rains, you can safely pick it up and move it. We have had more than one supper saved by relocating the Cobb from the picnic table to the shelter of our awning. (You might Google it for more details or see reviews on Amazon.) When the weather does not permit use of the Cobb or the old Coleman stove, we may have to resort to the propane stove and/or microwave oven in the Roadtrek. But that just doesn’t seem like “real camping,” does it?

At least one night on every trip down the Blue Ridge there is no worry about what’s for supper. An obligatory stop is for breakfast at the Mabry Mill. After that, we don’t need anything to eat for the rest of the day. Shirley is partial to the sweet potato pancakes. I think the smoked sausage and bacon are something special. Folks in the South have special powers when it comes to pork products.

•Walk down to any of the many waterfalls. We especially enjoy Dark Hollow Falls, Lewis Falls, and Linville Falls. Give me a minute and I could think of a dozen more.

•While you are at Asheville,

visit the Biltmore Estate, America’s most spectacularly opulent private residence. In addition to the huge (178,926-square-foot) French Renaissance-style chateau itself, we can recommend the spring flower gardens and the fall Michaelmas Harvest Festival.

We donned our raincoats and walked out to Linville Falls. The river makes a sharp left turn and plunges through a cleft in the rock.

Informal jam sessions as well as scheduled performances are offered at the Blue Ridge Music Center.

Shirley and I have been camping on the Blue Ridge for 40 years or so, but there is a good chance that camping may not appeal to you. Fear not. The Park Service has established several lodges in Shenandoah and along the Parkway. Like all national park lodges, they are comfortable but you are paying for location more than for luxurious accommodations.

he Ability Center will host their annual ADA Zoo Day event at the Toledo Zoo on Monday, July 23, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ADA Zoo Day is a community event and vendor fair for all to celebrate the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) along with over 60 local vendors with disability-focused resources. The purpose of the event is to educate the public on the wide range of goods and services available to people with disabilities in our community. Participating organizations will cover topics such as benefits/insurance, caregiver support, transportation, medical equipment/adaptive services, housing/ skilled care, Medicaid and healthcare services, and mental health.

The event will take place rain or shine.

The vendor fair is free with general Zoo admission. Please note admission for Lucas County residents is free until noon.

Protect your dog from summer’s heat

W

hen summer temperatures are soaring, every dog owner must take proper precautions to protect their beloved pet from heat-related illness or injury. Here’s how:

Keep the water flowing—Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink throughout the day. Outdoor drinking bowls should be placed in a shaded location rather than in full sun where the water will heat up and evaporate more rapidly.

Also, choose a spill-proof bowl so your dog doesn’t accidentally dump its water supply while you’re away.

Provide shelter from the elements—

Dogs that spend any amount of time outdoors must also have access to a permanent shelter that protects them from sun exposure, heat, and inclement weather. Remember, a yard that is shady in the morning could be exposed to scorching sun all afternoon. An appropriately sized all-weather, insulated/ventilated doghouse is ideal shelter.

Don’t walk and play in the heat of the day—To help prevent your

dog from getting overheated during exercise, limit walks and active play to morning or evening hours rather than the middle of the day when temperatures tend to be highest.

Also, keep in mind that hot concrete or asphalt can easily burn the pads of a dog’s paws. If you can’t tolerate placing your hand or bare foot on a surface for several seconds, your dog’s pads won’t be able to tolerate it either.

Never leave your dog in a parked car—Sure, you may be running into

the store for just a few short minutes, but that’s all the time it takes for the temperature in a parked car to rise to a level that can be deadly to pets—even if you leave the windows cracked open. If you must run errands in hot weather, leave your dog at home. ❦

: My wife has been diagnosed with hearing loss, and her doctor suspects it might be related to autoimmune inner ear disease. Can you explain to me what that is?

A: There are many commonly seen events that can cause hearing loss of one type or another. We see and read about the importance of staying healthy and keeping our immune system strong to avoid complications such as knee injuries, heart attack, or diabetes to name a few. But did you know that autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) can cause hearing loss? When the virus attacks, the immune system is there to protect the organ of hearing. And keep in mind, the immune system may attack the whole body or a particular organ.

As the name implies, autoimmune inner ear disease, or AIED, affects the inner ear. It’s a syndrome that results in progressive hearing loss and/or dizziness caused by antibodies or immune cells attacking the ear. The hearing loss often occurs rapidly and is accompanied by tinnitus, described by patients as a ringing, hissing, or roaring sound in the ear. Not all situations are complicated with episodes of dizziness and balance symptoms or tinnitus though.

The most common symptom of AIED is bilateral, asymmetric (both ears), progressive or fluctuating sensorinerual (nerve) hearing loss, which occurs unpredictably and worsens over time. The hearing loss develops over several months, but has been known to worsen over a several-year
