ery few individuals realize that 80% of their facial appearance with aging is due to sun exposure and subsequent skin damage. Is your dermatologist a dermatologist and is he/she board certified?

Individuals seeking diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and other skin conditions should determine if their dermatologists are indeed dermatologists and board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Not surprisingly, individuals seeking care of their skin conditions may receive care by physicians, nurse practioners, and physician assistants who may call themselves “skin specialists” and dermatologists. These physicians and others may do so without completing a formal dermatology residency. Many physicians who are board certified in fields unrelated to dermatology may be practicing dermatology. Now there are training programs being developed to permit nurse practioners to receive a doctorate of nursing and call themselves “Doctor” as would a PhD in a specialized field. These nurse practioners (NPs) are NOT doctors of medicine as is a board-certified dermatologist. Certification by the American Board of Dermatology is the consummate title addressed to a dermatologist based on their education and experience. If you see a “skin specialist,” it is your responsibility to ask of their credentials. Remember; a board-certified dermatologist is a medical doctor who has completed a minimum of twelve (12) years of training (four years of college, four years of medical school, and four more years in an internship and a formal dermatology residency program) to even become eligible to take the testing for board certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

Individuals seeking diagnosis and proper treatment of their skin disease can depend on board-certified dermatologists for their care.

s any pediatric medical practitioner will attest, kids cannot be treated like “little adults” when it comes to their health care. Any exams or treatments must be tailored to meet kids’ unique needs based on their size, stage of physical growth and development, level of emotional maturity, and a host of other factors.

Never is this specialized pediatric focus more important than when treating a child who is critically injured or ill—and that’s something every member of the multidisciplinary pediatric trauma team at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital fully understands. In fact, owing to the team’s exceptional level of training and expertise in pediatric trauma care, ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital was recently verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center—the only facility of its kind in Northwest Ohio.

“It took many years of intensive work to prove to the ACS Committee on Trauma that we meet all the criteria to be awarded this verification,” explains Terry Kirkham, MSN, RN, CEN, Manager for Pediatric Trauma, Injury Prevention, and Community Outreach at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. “We’ve been an Adult Level I Trauma Center for years, but the goal of this process was to demonstrate that we’re able to

provide the highest level of care for injured kids from the point of injury through the healing process and any rehabilitation they might need. We were awarded the verification for a

period of three years, which is the longest time ACS guidelines allow.”

Multidisciplinary team The dedicated pediatric trauma team consists of surgeons, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, all of whom specialize in trauma. The pediatric surgeons are on call and the rest of the team is in-house 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All

Children typically enter the ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital trauma center through the Emergency Center where the physicians are trained to provide initial care. Once a child is admitted and treated, the physician determines, based on the seriousness of the injury, whether he or she should be moved to the pediatric intensive care unit or the regular pediatric floor. Depending on the child’s unique needs, a broad range of specialists can then be called upon to provide their skill and expertise, including a pediatric orthopedic surgeon (the only one in our area), neurosurgeon, ENT, ophthalmologist, and others. “We also have a wonderful physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, Dr. Julie Miller, who can provide continued care after the acute phase to get the child back to his or her full potential,” Kirkham adds.

Family focus Members of the pediatric trauma team must be skilled not only at providing care for young patients, but also at meeting the needs of their parents, siblings, and other loved ones, who are, quite understandably, often experiencing a high degree of anxiety. For example, ProMedica

Toledo Children’s Hospital has a very large referral area, so pediatric trauma patients are frequently flown in from outlying hospitals and arrive ahead of their parents. So, it’s very important for the team to get the family to their child’s bedside as soon as possible, effectively communicate to parents and siblings what to expect when they see the child, and involve the family in their care. “It takes a whole team, and it’s not just us. The entire family is important in helping injured kids get better and back to their life,” Kirkham emphasizes.

ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital is also planning to become a certified ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) center, which will allow the team to perform baseline testing of kids’ cognitive function (to be used for comparison in the event of a suspected concussion) and promote best practices in evaluating and managing concussion, thus ensuring that kids return safely to play and learning.

Of course, every member of the ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital pediatric trauma team would much rather help kids avoid injury than treat them for it. So, they place considerable emphasis on preventing trauma and eliminating its sources (e.g., falls). The team also includes several Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, who educate parents on the proper use of child car seats and offer weekly car seat fittings (call 419-291-5993 to schedule an appointment).

Recognizing that our area lacked a care center focused on the comprehensive treatment of kids with mild to moderate head injuries, ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital has also established a multidisciplinary pediatric concussion clinic, which is aimed at mitigating the potentially serious long-term effects of these injuries and returning concussed children to play and other activities only when its safe and appropriate.

Kirkham notes that children suspected of having a concussion are seen in the center by Dr. Miller and tested by pediatric physical and speech therapists. Kirkham handles the nursing component of the clinic, which includes asking the child and parents questions related to symptoms, such as whether the child is more irritable than usual. “We’ve also developed charts that the family can take home to rate symptoms based on what the child is doing. Then we can compare the child’s progress at home with how he or she is doing in follow-up testing,” she says.

As needed, kids with a concussion can also work with a vestibular specialist to address any balance issues and a neurocognitive specialist to determine whether symptoms such as difficulty concentrating are related to concussion or perhaps another issue, like ADHD. In addition, sports medicine specialist Dr. Matt Roth works with the young concussed athletes to help them get back in the game when it’s safe and appropriate.

“Plus, there’s a return-to-learn component to the concussion clinic,” Kirkham says. “When they return to school, most concussion patients need some accommodations with respect to the duration of the day, how much homework they can manage, when they’re ready for classroom testing, and so on. It’s all a normal part of

He also urges women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer to see their doctor for a risk assessment to determine whether they need to be tested for mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. “The vast majority—about 85 percent—of breast cancers are non-hereditary, but around 15 percent can occur due to a hereditary syndrome, most commonly secondary to BRCA mutation,” he explains.

Doctors are discovering that not all breast cancers are alike in terms of their biology and the way they behave.

For example, some cancer cells have estrogen or progesterone receptors on their surfaces, and their growth is promoted by these hormones. In the case of HER-2-positive breast cancer, over-expression of a gene

The cells of so-called triple-negative breast cancer test negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and over-expression of HER-2. There has been evidence published this past year that the drug Carboplatin may increase the effectiveness of treatment in some of these patients.

As doctors’ understanding of the various types and subtypes of breast cancer increases, more and more medications that target particular vulnerabilities of these different cancer types are being introduced. For example, doctors noted that there were certain patients with estrogenand progesterone-positive breast cancer who appeared to do worse than those with apparently similar cancer. However, these patients with more aggressive cancers were found to have HER-2 neu receptors on the surfaces of their cancer cells. The

“We’ve also recently seen the advent of two breakthrough drugs for HER-2-positive breast cancer,” says Dr. Kasunic. “One is Pertuzumab, which is a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER-2 protein and works by preventing the cancer cell from receiving the message telling it to grow. Kadcyla is an exciting new conjugate drug that uses Herceptin as a targeting agent. The Herceptin directs the chemotherapy to the cancer cell and carries with it a very potent drug called Emtansine. If this drug were given by itself into the patient’s bloodstream, it would be too toxic, but when attached to Herceptin, it’s extremely effective with virtually no side effects.”

Dr. Kasunic is also pleased that the FDA has approved a combination of three different drugs—Pertuzumab, Herceptin, and Taxotere—for neoadjuvant chemotherapy for HER-2 non-metastatic breast cancer. In addition, the FDA has approved Perjeta with chemotherapy prior to surgery, increasing the chance of a complete response to treatment.

Exciting advances are taking place in the area of breast cancer testing, as well. For patients whose breast cancer is estrogen-receptor-positive but HER-2-negative, Oncotype DX testing is available. This test determines the risk of recurrence in women with this form of breast cancer and how likely they are to benefit from chemotherapy after surgery.

Dr. Kasunic, who underwent training at City of Hope to get certified in cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling, advises women to get genetic testing if their medical or family history includes: • A breast cancer diagnosis prior to age 45 • Any woman with triplenegative breast cancer • Two female relatives with breast cancer before the age of 50 • Any woman under age 50 who had a close family member with ovarian cancer • Multiple family members who have had breast cancer or ovarian cancer • Any other significant breast or ovarian cancer history

However, in cases where breast is not well visualized, as when the breast tissue is very dense, the patient has a strong family history of breast cancer, or the patient’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is 20 percent or more, MRI imaging may be used in conjunction with mammogram. Molecular breast imaging and breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, are other examples of modalities that might be utilized in addition to traditional mammogram.

Breast cancer affects patients not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. To address these components, The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers works closely with non-profit community organizations such as the Victory Center and Nightingales Harvest, which help support patients as they’re going through treatment.

“The Victory Center offers a wide array of services, such as massage therapy, reflexology, aquatics therapy, support groups, and counseling, while Nightingales Harvest supplies patients with high-calorie, high-protein foods at no cost to help them maintain nutrition throughout treatment. ehabilitation is critical to recovery following a debilitating injury, illness, or medical procedure—and Toledo-area residents are fortunate to have access to a wide variety of exceptional rehab professionals with the skills and expertise to help impaired individuals regain strength, function, and independence.

NuStep’s founders, Dick and Norma Sarns from Ann Arbor, Michigan, developed and manufactured the original recumbent cross trainer in response to a lack of safe, effective, easy-to-use exercise equipment for cardiac rehabilitation patients. According to Steve Sarns, NuStep’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, the NuStep cross trainer is part of the company’s inclusive fitness line, which means it was designed in such a manner that when used as directed, it will provide a safe, effective, total-body workout for users of virtually every age, fitness level, and health condition. “What Ron is doing by bringing in NuStep is making exercise avail-

Another advantage to the unit’s design is that its range of movement does not allow dangerous hyperextension of the joints. One user, a senior woman with arthritis, commented to Sarns that the movement of NuStep is so natural that she feels like the pain-free and carefree little girl she once was running in a field whenever she does a workout.

In addition to working the muscles and joints, NuStep provides a great cardiovascular workout. “Plus, evidence suggests that this type of exercise can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia,” Sarns notes. “The reciprocal bilateral motion also stimulates neurological activity, which can help people with incomplete spinal cord injury relearn the ability to ambulate. The other piece is engagement, which is essential to overall wellness. t seems as though two distinct and divergent sets of values are emerging in our society. St. Ursula Academy 160 years of educating young women

T

his year marked the 160th birthday of St. Ursula Academy, Toledo’s oldest all-girls school. Since 1854, teachers and staffers have followed the school’s mission statement to “… educate young women to develop their spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being in light of the values found in the Gospel and reflected in the life of St. Angela Merici.”

Currently, 566 girls in grades 6–12 call the school’s Indian Road campus their home. There they find a Catholic, fully accredited college-preparatory school with teachers and staff members who know how girls learn and succeed. The students find opportunities to challenge themselves in academics, sports, leadership, and service, and often develop friendships that last a lifetime. Catholic Christian values underpin all of the school’s offerings, and students are encouraged to prepare themselves for life in a world marked by change

and challenges.

President Mary Werner, an SUA alumna, is proud to list some of the reasons the school has been so successful. “We have 16 Advanced Placement classes and 18 Honors classes. Our student-teacher ratio is low (10:1), and our class size is good (19). We have a strong Guidance Department and a well-staffed Learning Commons study area for students who need help with assignments or to prepare for tests. Our teachers are veterans, and our parents are supportive.”

She explains that the school has used the 4 x 4 College Block schedule for more than 15 years, with graduates reporting a seamless transition to college work. A student takes only four courses at a time, and the 80-minute daily classes provide more instruction time and greater opportunities for acceleration. Students earn eight credits per year without the burden of taking eight different classes at the

The Newest Gateway Drugs: Prescription Painkillers What are “gateway drugs” and why should parents be aware of them? A “gateway drug” is a habit forming drug that may lead to the use of other addictive drugs. Parents may not be aware of a group of gateway drugs that are probably sitting in your medicine cabinet at home: prescription painkillers.

Prescription painkillers, or opiates, include such drugs as Vicodin (Norco), Oxycontin, and Percocet. Opiates are physically addicting. They are the new gateway drugs to heroin abuse and addiction. 75% of heroin users in treatment started with prescription painkillers and progressed to heroin.

Heroin use has reached epidemic proportions in Ohio and here in Lucas County. Fatal drug overdoses remain the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio, above car crashes, a trend that began in 2007. An individual can die from the first use of heroin.

I recently came across this thought, and I’ve been ruminating on it ever since. In light of all that’s going on in the world these days, I think it has a lot to say to those of us who are weary of all the violence and are looking for something to help us deal with it in some sane way. As I look around me and see the results of violence, I also see the results of tenderness and am in awe of the effect it has on people.

People come to our hospitals and medical centers to be healed and helped because of disease or trauma that is causing a certain amount of violence to their p e r s o n — b o d y, mind, and spirit.

When the caregiver, the doctor, the nurse, the social worker, the chaplain meets and greets them with a kind smile, a helping hand, a word of consolation, these signs of tenderness do much to help with the initial healing that will take place as the patient feels the love and compassion that can be abundant in such situations.

I’ve learned from experience that even some of the healing treatments and tests that take place in the healthcare setting may be considered violent as far as the pain or inconvenience involved. The kindness of the technician, the gentleness in the way the treatment or test is done also helps to make it less violent and gives one a sense of the tenderness and care of the person doing the test.

Students of all ages attend schools, colleges, and universities to learn more about themselves and the world they live in, and along the way, they may confront violence of a new and unexpected form. I’m reminded of the increasing reports of rape in the college setting. Such violence to a person will certainly make it difficult for someone to concentrate on the purpose of her or his being in the

academic setting in the first place, and it will also affect any attempt to accept tenderness from anyone else in the future. I also think about bullying and being shunned or ostracized in the classroom, in the cafeteria, or on the playground. I know this kind of behavior has been going on for generations and seems to be treated today as if it were something new, but it is harmful. It is a form of violence to the person being bullied or shunned or ostracized, and it too must be healed by tenderness.

And what about the big violence— war? When I read about what’s happening in the Middle East and Syria and the Ukraine, and especially when I see pictures of the bombed-out buildings, villages, and cities and people dying or dead in the streets, I picture what it would be like if people came in and tenderly picked up those bodies, hugged the gun-toting soldiers, climbed up on the tanks, and showered the troops inside with flowers—can you imagine what would happen then?

We saw some of this on a small scale in our own country recently in Ferguson, Missouri. Along with the terrible violence, we saw a policeman walk through the crowds encouraging peace, we heard family members of the slain young mvan ask for peace and calm, we heard many people call for tenderness, not more violence.

It seems to me that we each must stand back and see where we can bring tenderness into our world. Like the song says, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” I say, let there be tenderness on earth and let it begin with me. ❦ Sister Mary Thill is a Sylvania Franciscan Sister. Or perhaps you’re already enrolled in Medicare but want to explore different plan alternatives when the annual election period begins this month. How will your out-of-pocket expenses change?

What’s this “doughnut hole” you keep hearing about?

These are just some of the questions that commonly arise when seniors are faced with the myriad Medicare options available to them. To get answers, you can try sifting through all the direct-mail pieces that are currently flooding your mailbox, but a better alternative is to work with the local team of health-insurance experts at The Ashley Group, who can help you select a Medicare plan or supplement that best aligns with your needs and budget—at no direct cost to you.

“While there are no major changes to Medicare this year, there are always minor changes that make it necessary for people to re-examine their plan. and travel is a very important part of their lives,” Sickles explains. “Many of these seniors would be well advised to explore the PPO option to see whether it fits into their lifestyle, and we can assist them with that.”

According to David Holman, a Licensed Agent with The Ashley Group, gaps in Medicare continue to be a challenge, especially in the area of prescription drug coverage. “For example, under Medicare Part D, there’s a gap in coverage, known as the ‘doughnut hole,’ that enrollees need to be aware of,” he says. “Essentially, once you reach an initial coverage limit of $2,850, your prescription costs will increase dramatically for a period of time until your out-of-pocket costs reach $4,550.

In 2015, those limits will increase to $2,960 and $4,700 respectively, which means the doughnut hole is getting larger next year. That’s just one of the reasons people get so confused about Medicare and could benefit from expert guidance.”

Holman reminds Medicare enrollees that around October 1, they should be receiving their Medicare Annual Notice of Change, which details any changes in coverage, costs, or services. “Give this document a careful look, and if you find you don’t understand something, give us a call and we’ll walk you through it in simple terms. Remember, your opportunity to change plans is during open enrollment, October 15 through December 7, so if you’re unhappy with any aspect of your current Medicare plan, now is the time to do something about it,” he advises.

Of course, seniors have the alternative of researching the various Medicare options themselves and enrolling online. They can also work directly with an insurance provider when choosing Medicare coverage.

Dr. Christopher Cooper named Dean of UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences

nationwide search for a new Dean to lead the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences found the strongest candidate right here at home—cardiologist Dr. Christopher Cooper. A dedicated clinician, teacher, and medical researcher who has been a Toledo resident for the past 20 years, Dr. Cooper began his new position on August 18, 2014.

Dr. Cooper grew up in Springfield, Ohio and received his bachelor ’s degree from Wittenberg University.

“We’re also in the business of research because that’s how we help define or develop the next generation of treatments and care strategies, and that has to happen with real patients to be safe and effective,” he adds.

Dr. Cooper emphasizes that medical students must be prepared for several emerging trends that they’ll soon encounter in the healthcare field. One is that the amount of information and scientific knowledge they’ll need to acquire and maintain in order to provide the best possible care is expanding rapidly. Today’s practitioners need to work hard to keep pace with this constant, rapid flow of new information. The UT College of Medicine is continuously looking for innovative ways to promote this degree of nimble-mindedness, such as the “flipped classroom” model of learning, in which students explore new content at home on their own time and then come to the classroom to participate in discussion and more

Another developing trend is an increasing focus on population health, which is about keeping healthy people healthy or preventing sick people from getting sicker and needing hospitalization—an approach that requires a different set of treatment strategies than those used in the traditional healthcare model.

UT is also beginning to place increasing emphasis on interprofessional education, in which students pursuing different types of healthcare degrees are put together to solve problems, for example in the Simulation Center. “A few decades ago, it was good enough to go see a smart doctor. Now you need to add in a smart nurse, physician assistant, x-ray tech, pharmacist, and so on to ensure you’re getting the best continuum of care,” Dr. Cooper says.

It’s hoped that taking much of the anxiety out of breast cancer screening will encourage greater patient compliance with routine mammography.

Currently, the American College of Radiology and American Cancer Society recommend that women begin annual screening mammography at age 40. Those with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to begin at an earlier age and should discuss the timing

with their doctor. “We have so much data to support that starting annual screening mammography at age 40 catches the most cancers. Plus, we know that the breast cancers caught in younger patients tend to be the most aggressive form, so we don’t advise waiting until you’re older,” states Dr. Wang.

enior communities typically seek to attract residents with a list of the amenities they offer. While Genesis Village, an independent living community for people age 55 and over, is certainly rich in lavish amenities and personal services, it’s the warm, welcoming, family-like atmosphere that really sets the community apart and gives residents and their loved ones a true sense of belonging.

It was this ambience that encouraged Ruth Vogelbacher to leave a different senior facility and move to Genesis Village last December. She was dissatisfied with many aspects of her prior residence and didn’t feel particularly welcome there, but her biggest issue was boredom. “I knew Genesis Village was on its way, but it wasn’t quite ready when I was looking for a place to live,” she recalls.

“When it was finished, my daughter and grandson came to the open house and knew right away it was the place for me. So my daughter called and said, ‘Mom, we’re coming to get you!’”

Vogelbacher loves everything about Genesis Village, particularly the residents and staff. She remarks that everyone she meets is so cheerful and always smiling. And as far as boredom is concerned, that’s a thing of the past. “There’s always something going on and they’re always adding more and more offerings, so if you can’t find a way to keep busy here, you’re not trying hard enough,” she says.

Like Vogelbacher, Julian “JB” Brown lived in another senior living center before moving to Genesis Village almost a year ago. A 90year resident of Dundee, Michigan, Brown is a former Navy cook who served in both World War II and the Korean

War. He heard about Genesis Village from his daughter, who urged him to come down and tour the facility.

“When I walked through the front door and saw the pool and hot tub, I was interested right away, but it was meeting the wonderful people here that really sold me. It was just a week later that I moved in, and I’ve never regretted that decision,” he remarks.

Residents are encouraged to invite family and friends to visit Genesis Village so they can enjoy meals and the other amenities together as often as possible, and the community can accommodate gatherings and events both big and small. “Why bother going out to dinner when you can eat here?” Brown asks. Also, furnished guest rooms are available by reservation for a nominal fee.

Jim Oedy, CEO of Genesis Village, loves hearing stories from each resident’s unique history. For example, it was only in recent years that he learned his mother, who resides in the community, was a drummer in an all-girls band and recorded several records. His father was a Navy Chief who served in the Pacific during World War II and had two of the vessels he served on struck by kamikazis. “We have a fair number of military veterans here, and they all have incredible stories to tell—things that people from younger generations just can’t comprehend. In addition to being home to many senior military veterans, Genesis Village is very supportive of the men and women who are currently serving in our nation’s armed forces. In Fact, Heroes in Action, a local non-profit military outreach organization dedicated to supporting service members, veterans, and their families, has its office on the Genesis Village campus.

Each month, Heroes in Action sends out well over 400 care packages to men and women who are away from home on active duty.

Oedy remarks that it’s extremely gratifying to see residents representing a wide span of ages all interacting and fellowshipping together. What’s more, as a musician, he is thrilled by the number of musically talented residents who share his love for making music. “We have an unbelievably high percentage of people who are musically gifted here. So, we’re creating a dedicated music room, complete with a piano, organ, drums, upright base, and other instruments, to encourage residents to play together and keep nurturing their skills. That’s just one example of what can happen when you’re passionate about seniors, recognize what they’re capable of, and empower them to pursue what’s important to them,” he says.

Genesis Village currently has 91 apartments (one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and studio), but that number will increase to a total of 145 with the pending completion of the new East Wing, the last phase of construction.

Residents’ modest monthly fee covers all utilities, three daily meals, transportation service, concierge and valet service, round-the-clock front desk coverage, meal delivery for those who wish to dine in their apartment, and access to all the community’s activities and amenities.

According to Jessica Blattner, Marketing Manager for Genesis Village, the community has also implemented several programs to help residents feel comfortable and safe in their new home. “For example, we’ve implemented a complimentary 24-hourcheck service. Our residents are

independent and can come and go as they please, but our Life Enrichment staff makes an effort to see and talk to each resident at least once a day to make sure they’re doing okay. We also have established residents who serve as village guides to welcome new residents, introduce them to others, and help them become familiar with our facilities and amenities. Plus, we have resident coordinators who can help residents set up services, answer any questions they may have, and serve as a general liaison,” she says.

Genesis Village is an independent living community, but that doesn’t

mean people who need some assistance can’t make it their home. Residents can bring in any outside services of their choosing, and Interim Healthcare has an office on campus and is on call 24/7 for residents who wish to take advantage of their continuum of home care services.

In addition, ProHealth offers a wide range of on-site ancillary services to residents, including dental, audiology, podiatry, mobile radiology, weekly wellness clinics, psych services, and even a primary care physician who makes house calls.

Still, Blattner emphasizes that Genesis Village is about community and belonging, not just a list of services and amenities. “No matter where you come from or whether you’re in your 50s or 90s, you’ll feel at home here, and that’s a testament to our residents and the staff who serve them,” she says. ❦ Genesis Village is located at 2429 S. t’s Halloween, and you know what that means: sugar, sugar, sugar!

Beginning in late summer, stores begin taunting and tantalizing us with prominently displayed treats conveniently packaged in small, easyto-eat servings. By the time the actual holiday rolls around, we’ve been wading through candy corn and “fun-sized” candy bars for at least a month.

All holidays have their peculiar food traditions, but Halloween perhaps wins the prize for being the most focused on candy and other sweet treats as the center of attraction. While one piece of candy won’t make or break your health, few of us stop at just one. But that indulgence takes its toll and is manifesting itself more and more in the current epidemic of type 2 diabetes. It is called an epidemic because of the shocking increase in new cases of diabetes.

If you overwork them, they will eventually cease to perform in a way that can keep up with the demand. Your body can also become resistant to the insulin that your pancreas produces. The more

Healthy attachments are key to happy families

L

ike all human relationships, families are a complex system. Like a car with its many moving parts, a family can run smoothly or it can sputter, jerk, or even stall. How smoothly it will run depends upon the connections, or attachments, between the various members of the family.

How healthy attachment develops Healthy attachment begins with a healthy sense of one’s self. In psychotherapy, the term differentiation is used to describe the state of self-understanding and self-acceptance that does not require the acceptance or approval of others. An individual who possesses differentiation has both personal autonomy and a healthy desire for connection with others.

Healthy differentiation develops when children are raised in a stable atmosphere of love and acceptance

where the limits of appropriate behavior are clear and consistent.

In such an environment, children are gradually given more freedom and encouraged to explore and make choices. Because they are secure in their parents’ love and acceptance, they develop the courage to take reasonable risks, knowing that making mistakes and dealing with problems are a natural part of life.

Adults who grow up in such an environment accept themselves and others for who they are. A family system of such differentiated individuals has healthy attachments. They possess the flexibility and the wisdom to allow differences, disagreements, and minor conflicts between themselves and loved ones without feeling the need to change themselves or others.

They intuitively know that they can be themselves, make their own decisions, live their own lives, and still be secure in the love of their family members.

How unhealthy attachment develops Healthy attachment is the happy medium between the extremes of over-attachment and disconnection.

It is characterized by a flexible giveand-take between family members who are differentiated and secure in themselves. They love one another and have healthy connections. But they also give one another the freedom to have their own views and direct their own lives as they see fit.

On the other hand, unhealthy attachment in families involves one or more individuals who lack differentiation. Most commonly, they have grown up in families where—for one reason or another—they have not felt safe and accepted. Rather than being secure and flexible, such individuals have a rigid need for others to be and act the way they desire them to be and act. Having a great need for acceptance and approval of others, they typically react to any conflict with extreme emotionalism.

In family systems with such unhealthy attachment, there is little

room for differences, disagreements, and conflicts. Often one or more central individuals wield disproportionate power over others who routinely submit to their demands and expectations. Rather than having the freedom to believe and act as they wish, the family members are fused or enmeshed in a tangled knot of unhealthy dependence. Everyone is in everyone else’s business with little respect or privacy allowed.

Signs of unhealthy attachment In such families, when an individual does not meet the expectations or demands of other family members, serious problems arise. Refusal to behave as expected is often considered a betrayal or a lack of loyalty to the family. Rigid attitudes and black-andwhite thinking are prevalent, with no flexibility or room for negotiation or compromise. The offending party is criticized and attacked, often by the entire family and extended family, until he or she comes back in line with what is considered the “right thing to do.” If that does not happen, the offending party may be distanced from or entirely cut off by other

The entrance of a new family member through marriage often disrupts the uneasy equilibrium of a family characterized by unhealthy attachment. Over-attached family members may develop feelings of possessiveness or jealousy toward the new spouse. When loyalty and attention naturally shift from the family to the new husband or wife, family members may feel abandoned or betrayed. Resulting conflicts or changes in family traditions may be met with hostility and attack. The newly married family member may feel stuck between their new spouse and their family. Major family events, such as weddings, birthdays, and the birth of new babies, often become the field of battle for these recurring family conflicts.

Nutrition and breast cancer risk

V

irtually everyone knows someone who has breast cancer—a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, or colleague. This isn’t surprising since the latest statistic is that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

More than once, I’ve heard women say, “I’m doing everything right.”

But unfortunately, making healthy choices doesn’t necessarily eliminate breast cancer risk—that’s what makes it so frustrating, especially to younger women.

To be perfectly clear, there are steps we can take to lower breast cancer risk. However, there’s still much we don’t understand about the relationship between breast cancer and lifestyle. For instance, we know that proper nutrition has been linked to lower breast cancer risk, but a lot of uncertainty remains with respect to how and why.

What we do know That being said, there are certain

lifestyle factors that we know increase breast cancer risk. Among them is carrying extra body weight, especially if you’re postmenopausal. It doesn’t have to be a lot of extra weight, and you don’t have to be obese. Even if you’re just a little overweight—5 to 10 pounds—you have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who are of normal weight.

Alcohol consumption is related to increased risk of both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer. Again, it’s not just those who overdo alcohol who are at increased risk. Even one drink every other day can elevate your breast cancer risk.

Drinking over more of your life matters, too. Women who start drinking early in life but then stop see their risk go down. Those at the highest risk are women who start drinking early and continue throughout their lifetime.

know it increases breast cancer risk as well? In fact, more than 100 studies looked at this connection and found that women who are the most physically active have a 10- to 25-percent lower risk. Evidence also shows that women who exercise, even after a breast cancer diagnosis, have a lower chance of dying from the disease.

Exercise is recommended whether you lose weight or not.

Physical activity helps prevent weight gain and maintain weight loss. It also lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes while improving cardiovascular health, mental health, and quality of life. It’s a great benefit overall!

Clearing up the diet and nutrition confusion Now, back to nutrition. Let’s take a closer look at certain food types to separate fact from fiction when it comes to their influence on breast cancer risk: Fruits and vegetables—You should be eating five servings a day. Are you? The emphasis on making half your plate fruits and vegetables is good advice. Several studies report that women who eat more fruits and veggies that are rich in carotenoids and beta carotene have a reduced risk for certain types of breast cancer.

While fruits and vegetables have a small impact on cancer risk in general, their overall health benefits are great!

Vitamin D—Early studies indicate that women who have high blood levels of Vitamin D have lower breast cancer risk—though the science behind this is not entirely clear. Current studies are in the process of looking at whether high doses of Vitamin D from food, sunlight, or supplements lower breast cancer risk.

Soy—Over the past 20 years, opinions have been all over the place on soy—ranging from a “miracle cancer-preventing food” at one end of the spectrum to “a food that promotes breast cancer risk” at the other end.

Which is closer to the truth?

Soy is difficult to study here, as American women consume very little of it. Based on data from Asian countries, soy seems to protect Asian women against breast cancer. But

the same can’t be said for women in Europe, where evidence shows that increased soy has a neutral effect on developing breast cancer. The bottom line is that soy foods don’t seem to increase or decrease the risk of breast cancer in Western women.

Saturated fat and meat—I feel like a broken record here, but some studies show that women who eat a diet high in saturated fat have a higher risk of breast cancer. Interestingly, it has been found that a diet rich in fat in middle to late life has little effect on breast cancer risk, while fat intake during adolescence and early adulthood is associated with some increase in risk.

Yet another study showed that women who eat the most red meat have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. It’s not yet clear why this would be true, other than perhaps there is something in the red meat— like heme iron or carcinogens—that is created when the meat is cooked.

The bottom line So what should we take away from all this? Let’s start with what we know will help reduce breast cancer risk: • Practice good weight management to avoid being overweight or obese.

• Get plenty of fruits and veggies—at least five per day.

• Strive to get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

• Drink alcohol only occasionally and in moderation (one to two drinks).

It’s a fairly common complaint that affects about 20% of the population or 50 million adults in the U.S. Described as noise or ringing (or clicking, hissing, buzzing!) in the ears, it is a condition that relates to hearing loss, excessive noise exposure, ear injury, allergies, or even emotional stress. Hearing loss is one of the most common links to tinnitus. A recent study performed in France illustrated that of the 123 people studied, only one did not have a hearing loss. Another study completed in England estimates that about 90% of people who suffer from tinnitus also experience some type of hearing loss.

The noise can be continuous or irregular, and the loudness can vary.

The level of severity can range from simply a minor annoyance to causing

difficulty sleeping or concentrating when awake. Tinnitus can also worsen if a person drinks alcohol or caffeinated beverages, smokes cigarettes, or eats certain foods.

Tinnitus sufferers should be aware that, based on the cause of the tinnitus, it may or may not be temporary.

Recent exposure to loud noise can cause short-term tinnitus. However, other sources can cause long-term tinnitus.

There are four major types of tinnitus. Mild tinnitus can be concealed by louder sounds and may only be apparent when surroundings are quiet.

High-pitched tinnitus is just that, a high-pitched ringing, whistling, or buzzing, and it may only be heard when your body is positioned a certain way. There are also low-frequency tinnitus and musical hallucination,

While tinnitus can’t be cured completely, with treatment, it can be improved over time. There are proven methods that decrease the buzzing in the ears. Amplifying sound, whether it is from a noise generator, music, or hearing aids, can significantly reduce the contrast between the ringing and surrounding environment. Protecting ears from excessive noise exposure can prevent tinnitus as well as reduce the chance of it worsening.

Treatment options can include management devices that allow users to relax and make the ringing less intrusive, such as the Neuromonics system. Hearing aids are also a great solution to beating tinnitus. They reduce the contrast between the ringing and silence by providing amplification for quiet environments. Hearing aids also limit unnecessary noise delivered to the ear in louder environments.

Medical Mutual’s breast cancer awareness brunch set for October 18

n observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Medical Mutual is sponsoring Hattitude, a free breast cancer awareness brunch, on Saturday, October 18, at The Pinnacle in Maumee. The brunch, which honors and celebrates breast cancer survivors, is open to the public.

The event features breast health education, a resource fair, and presentation of the Debra A. Green Community Service Award to a local organization for its contributions to the fight against breast cancer. There will also be a prize for the guest with the best hat.

Barbara Oxner, recipient of the 2013 Debra A. Green Community

Service Award, will be the keynote speaker. Ms. Oxner, a 29-year breast cancer survivor, is the educational resource for the African American Women Cancer Support Group.

She is actively involved in teaching breast cancer awareness in the community.

Attendees are asked to bring a new bra to be donated to women in need who are victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.

The resource fair begins at 9:00 a.m. The brunch, followed by the program, will begin at 10:00 a.m.

every sense of the word. We had been cautioned to “dress appropriately.”

This is not a Caribbean cruise. Glaciers are made of ice, you may have heard, and several hundred square miles of ice can have a cooling effect.

But wait. A lot of cool stuff happened before we got anywhere near the ice.

To begin with, unless you arrive by ferry, you get to drive through the mountains and down through the Keystone Canyon past waterfalls and glaciers. There are several waterfalls—most notably Bridal Veil and Horse Tail. The two glaciers are Worthington and Keystone. You can take a trail up to the toe of Worthington, or you can see it just fine from the highway. Keystone Glacier comes down to the river right on the highway. What highway is that? Listen, in Alaska there is usually a limit of one road per town. The really “big cities” like Anchorage and Fairbanks may get double that allocation. A road map for the whole state is far less complicated than one for Perrysburg.

At Valdez, we camped on Prince William Sound with the nose of our RV less than ten feet from the edge of the water. When the tide was in, that is. Otherwise, the water was a little farther off. Camping at water’s edge is popular in Alaska. We did the same thing at Hope, at Capt. Cook State Park, out on the Homer Spit, and at Seward. In all these places, the

mountains come right down to the water so you don’t have to choose between them and the beach. You can have both. Towns along the coast tend to be situated at the heads of fjords—valleys flooded by the sea.

Eagles, a couple dozen at a time, came at low tide when the fishing was easier. Seagulls surrounded them, hoping for leftovers or to steal a bite.

Sea otters came by regularly, floating on their backs. They’d dive and come up with a clam in one hand and a rock in the other. The otter would put the rock on his chest and whack the clam to open it. Really. It’s true.

Seals like seafood, too.

Sea Otters, which look like Uncle Roscoe, spend most of their time floating on their backs, eating clams.

But you should see them try to hold a rock in one flipper and a clam in the other. Pathetic. So, mostly they just eat salmon. Fred Rodolph says he hates seals and sea lions because they eat so many salmon. “And, besides, they stink!”

Oh, I didn’t introduce you to Fred yet. He’s the owner and skipper of the Lu-Lu Belle. Shirley asked him about that name. He said his first boat was a double-ended little tub that was a real lu-lu. Belle is its much more beautiful successor, handcrafted

There are other boats that can take you to see glacier and wildlife. Other boats are not captained by Fred, and nobody we met ever spontaneously endorsed any cruise except the Lu-Lu Belle. The boat is very nice, but the reason to take it is the captain. The man is a born storyteller.

The Lu-Lu Belle is a nice enough boat, but it is Capt. Fred who makes the tour a special treat.

The “advantages” of sending your college-age kid to work in a cannery.

The places to visit in Valdez if you stay for another day. Or two. But you do plan to stay at least a week, don’t you? Why there are grain silos right at the harbor—even though there is no grain grown in Alaska.

And a huge floating concrete dock to handle the inter-modal shipping containers—of which there ain’t any.

And the architectural beauty of the new convention center. It has a flat roof in a town that gets 47 feet of snow a year. Mostly, he talked about the scenery and the wildlife. There is a whole lot of both.

At Valdez, like our other favorite Alaskan coastal towns, snow-capped mountains come right down to the water. It is simply splendid. But you don’t appreciate the real grandeur of the place until you get out on the water.

(It’s hard to see the pattern in the wallpaper if you have your nose pressed against the wall.) In late July, melting snow created waterfalls from hundreds or thousands or millions of feet up. (Seemed like it anyway.) From a boat, you can see a whole waterfall without getting a crick in your neck.

The theme for this event has a close tie to organ, eye, and tissue donation, and truly represents how we feel about those who are affected by it. While the true “heroes” are the donors themselves, there is still a hero inside us all: the donor families who gave so generously, the transplant recipients who endure their own challenges and live on in remembrance of their donors, and anyone who is a registered organ, eye, and tissue donor. Laurels helps local sculptor carve out recovery after debilitating fall

A

rtists are known to suffer for their work, but local sculptor Paxton Cooper, age 66, took this to a whole new level recently when he fell while carrying a heavy piece of artwork.

The piece, weighing in excess of 60 pounds, was the model for a marble bust that Cooper created for the mausoleum of renowned boxer Muhammad Ali. He had moved the bust without incident many times before, but this time he slipped and lost his balance in the process. Not wanting to damage the valuable piece, he clutched it to his body as he fell.

When he hit the floor, he fractured a rib. Subsequent to the injury, he developed pneumonia.

While the particular circumstances surrounding Cooper ’s fall were unique, he’s certainly not alone.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of Americans age 65 and older experience a fall each year.

The CDC also reports that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and

the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.

While in the hospital, Cooper was told he would need five days of observation at a skilled nursing facility as well as rehabilitation. In discussing where he should go, Cooper adamantly insisted on The Laurels of Toledo, located at 1011 Byrne Road.

The Laurels was Cooper ’s first and only choice based on his prior experience with the rehab staff there.

“The first time I came to The Laurels was after gastric bypass surgery that went very badly—you could say it was a ‘plumbing disaster,’” he recalls.

“When I got there, I was belligerent, angry, and upset. I felt completely abandoned of all my senses. I couldn’t walk and had been in a coma for close to 30 days. Then I met Matt Snyder and everything changed. I was totally determined not to cooperate, but he touched something inside of me with his approach. With Matt helping me find my core again, and reinforcing it with therapy, I was able to get back to

my life—not exactly as it was before, but as good as it could be. So when I came back after my fall, I knew I was in good hands with Matt.”

Describing the approach he used in Cooper’s rehab, Snyder, a physical therapy assistant, explains that when the body loses balance, it goes through three strategies in an effort to recover.

The first is an ankle strategy, which involves coming up on either the toes or heels depending on the body’s direction of movement. The second is a hip strategy—essentially thrusting the buttocks outward to regain balance.

And the third is a stepping strategy, which involves moving a foot forward or backward to recover balance— much like extending the kickstand

on a bicycle.

“Mr. Cooper’s ankles were weak, so we focused on strengthening the ankles in every plane of motion he was capable of doing,” Snyder says.

“We also worked on his hips and had him perform core-stabilizing and Pilates-based exercises while standing on a mat to work his proximal musculature, which has to come before distal mobility. Finally, we worked on some vestibular exercises to improve his balance.”

Snyder explains that we normally rely on visual feedback to tell us where our bodies are in space, so vestibular exercises are intended to challenge that perception. For example, he would have Cooper stand on a soft, uneven mat and move his head in specific ways, first with his eyes open and then with them closed. “This helps to strengthen the intrinsic ankle musculature and increase balance as a means of fall prevention,” he adds.

In the event that a fall does occur, Snyder says that the easiest way to recover is to transition onto your hands and knees, crawl to something you can use to support yourself, such as a couch or other piece of furniture, pull one of your feet underneath your body, and then push yourself to an

upright position with your arms and foot—assuming you weren’t injured too seriously in the fall, of course.

The Laurels therapy team can recommend simple home modifications that seniors can do to reduce fall risk, such as removing carpets or throw rugs that present a tripping hazard or removing cords that extend across walkways. They also offer home evaluations that involve going to the person’s home and observing them as they go through their normal daily activities to assess what modifications could make the environment safer

and to recommend any assistive devices that might be appropriate.

o matter what your circumstances, meeting with your financial advisor at least once a year is an important part of attaining your financial goals. To get the most out of your review, you’ll want to spend some time gathering your thoughts— and records—in order to make the process as meaningful and beneficial as possible. Equally important, you’ll want to address some of the following

questions and share them with your Financial Advisor.

Have your goals changed over the past year? A life event such as a change in jobs, getting married, or having a child necessarily impacts your shortand long-term goals. It also affects the priority of these goals. Make sure your current financial strategy takes them into consideration.

Is your asset allocation in tune with your goals? Depending on the performance of your investments so far this year, you may want to examine whether your mix of stocks, bonds, cash, and other assets is close to your target. If not, it may be time to rebalance to a mix that more closely resembles your desired exposure to risk and potential return.

Are you taking full advantage of tax-advantaged accounts? Remember that certain types of investments may receive favorable tax treatment. Contributions to a traditional IRA or 401(k), for example, are made on a pre-tax basis and can grow free of federal income taxes until qualified withdrawals are made during retirement.1 Make sure you are contributing the maximum amount you can afford.

Tennis is growing Give it a try!

A

round a year ago, I was given the opportunity to publish my first article in Healthy Living News. The goal behind the monthly article was to bring attention to tennis, try to get more readers involved in the sport of a lifetime, and share the reasons tennis is such a positive sport, not only for younger people, but also for the entire population.

Recently, I attended the Tennis Teachers Conference in New York City. This amazing event provided tennis teachers from around the world insights on trends in tennis and the tennis industry, here in the United States and abroad. The Tennis Industry Association shared some stats with folks about the growth of tennis and has published the article

Here are some points to consider: • Tennis is the only traditional sport to be ranked in the top 10, in terms of participation growth, out of nearly 120 sports and activities surveyed in the recently released Physical Activity Council (PAC) 2014 Participation Report. Last year, tennis grew 4% (658,000).

• The activities that ranked ahead of tennis include walking for fitness, swimming for fitness, running/jogging, bicycling on non-paved surfaces, aerobics, backpacking overnight, bicycling on paved surfaces, yoga, and trail running.

• Of kids between the ages of 6 and 12, there was an increase of 4.8% to over 2 million players. Much of this is credited towards making the sport easier to play with the focus on 10-and-under tennis.

• With the creation of the PlayTennis.com website, people have been able to find places and programs to participate in much easier. Check out the website to locate facilities near you.

I share these items with you to demonstrate that tennis is growing and the benefits of the game (which have been shared in previous articles) are being realized by many people throughout the United States.

Fortunately, there is help from a highly accessible medication and health expert. This person is a pharmacist, a resource addressing our health needs so that each of us can make better decisions. Pharmacists welcome our health cries as they coach and cheer for our wellness, particularly when it involves medications. This is especially true during October as we celebrate American Pharmacists Month.

Taking medications may be part of your lifestyle and a reason health can be so hard to understand, especially if you are one of the 40% of adults 65 years and older taking five or more medications.1 That may mean taking your first medications before breakfast, then one with lunch, two more with dinner, and another before bed. No wonder almost 75% of people say they do not take their medications as directed, contributing to an estimated 125,000 deaths and adding $290 billion in avoidable healthcare costs.2 So how do we keep track of all these medications or health suggestions?

Medications work because they are powerful. But power possesses potential for both good and bad. It seems reasonable, then, to have a relationship with a pharmacist in order to decipher a medication’s pros and cons. This makes the pharmacist an integral part of our healthcare team, dispensing not just medications, but advice. Apart from the community pharmacy, pharmacists serve in hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and the pharmaceutical industry. Any healthcare setting where medication is involved, a pharmacist is there acting as a guardian to ensure safe, successful, and cost-effective medication use.

Yet, many do not know the services pharmacists provide despite them being the most accessible healthcare professionals. For example, they are increasingly providing services like “medication therapy management,” where pharmacists work one-onone with patients to maximize the effectiveness of their medications.

Not only can this service lead to improvements in blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) to name a few, but it can also help reduce overall healthcare costs by preventing hospital admissions.

As patient advocates, pharmacists collaborate with doctors, other healthcare professionals, and insurers. The pharmacist’s services are numerous and can include administering vaccinations, smoking cessation counseling, travel medicine, nutritional guidance,

skin cancer screening, blood testing for cholesterol and diabetes, or monitoring of medication side-effects. As medication experts, they also offer guidance regarding over-the-counter products, supplements, vitamins, and herbals as well as their associated interactions.

This American Pharmacists Month is time to recognize the invaluable role pharmacists provide to our health.

People who know their pharmacist by name are twice as likely to ask questions about their health and twice as likely to make an appointment to review their medications.4 Speaking as a student pharmacist, I can say that 4 Levy S. the most rewarding part of my job is talking with you. The relationship other pharmacists and I have with our patients is covenantal, meaning our utmost priority is serving your health needs. This may be recommending an allergy medication, counseling someone new to insulin, or simply sharing thoughts on the latest “miracle pill.” If you casually enter a pharmacy, some may call you a “customer” or even a “patient,” but when you “know your pharmacist” you become a friend, a real person, not a transaction or number.

So next time you visit your pharmacy be sure to say “hi” or “thank you” to the person in the white coat. Hearing can have a direct relationship to diabetes, heart disease, and depression. You may be surprised to learn that smoking (both firsthand and secondhand) increases your chance of developing a hearing loss significantly.

Smoking cigarettes, and even cigars, may cause the nose and throat to be irritated and, in turn, develop mucus, which is made up of bacteria. Because there are bacteria cells in the mucus, it can increase the likelihood of developing an ear infection.

Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of ear infections especially in babies and young children since this age group is prone to infections due to their underdeveloped immune systems. In fact, being exposed to tobacco smoke for more than 10 hours per week actually increases the risk of developing hearing loss by 40% compared to non-smokers, and heavier smokers have an elevated risk.

Hearing loss is also indirectly related to smoking because smoking

leads to heart disease. Cardiovascular problems arise when blood supply is reduced; when you smoke, blood supply to the ears lowers. As a result, sensory cells in the ear start to die.

Moreover, the toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke can adversely affect the middle ear vibrations as well as the inner ear. Because of this, smoking can eventually impair the brain’s ability to hear sounds altogether.

The good news is that former smokers have no increased risk for hearing loss. Therefore, it’s highly encouraged to quit smoking to eliminate this risk completely.

Regardless of age, ethnicity, or even level of noise exposure, smoking and hearing loss are inextricably linked.

While we’ve heard many reasons why it’s important to quit smoking altogether, potential hearing loss is another motive to kick the habit.

If you do decide to quit smoking (kudos to you!), be sure to have a comprehensive hearing evaluation performed to assess any damage.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s® helps reclaim future for millions

he Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter is inviting Toledo area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the 2014 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer ’s®, which will take place on Sunday, October 19th at the Lucas County Recreation Center. Registration and check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. inside Rec Hall 2.

The opening ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m., and the Walk will begin at 3:00 p.m. Emily Yark is serving as chair of this year’s event.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for thousands of participants in the Toledo area who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get

involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Running tips for beginners

A

re you interested in running but afraid of the first steps? Here are a few tips to get you off on the right foot and on your way to enjoying the sport of running. Most important, consult your physician before starting any exercise program.

As a runner, the most important piece of equipment is your pair of running shoes. Before starting your running program, visit a shop that specializes in running shoes, such as Dave’s Performance Footgear, for an assessment of your needs and a personalized fit.

One of the most common complaints of a new runner is, “I can’t breathe.” Focus your energy on exhaling rather than inhaling. As your need

for air increases, think about forcing the air out of your lungs rather than sucking it in. This will make you less tired than when you are huffing and puffing and will also help prevent hyperventilation.

In the beginning, take frequent short runs after resting sufficiently. Your runs should last long enough for your body to get a workout but still be able to recover in time for your next run. If you over exercise and your muscles do not recover to their original condition, you will not gain any benefit.

Strength is gained during rest when your muscles repair the fibers that are broken down during exercise. But remember, every runner is different when it comes to the amount and frequency of exercise that is appropriate. Listen to your body.

As a novice runner, take quick steps rather than long ones. You will not tire as fast if you take short, fast steps rather than long, slow ones, especially when you are tackling hills. When running downhill, lean your body forward in order to try to keep your body perpendicular to the hill.

Novice runners need motivation and a schedule. Join a beginner running group, or seek out a running partner. Some runners find that taking music along on their workouts helps make running fun. When using headphones, though, play the music at a reasonable level so you can hear traffic noise and remain alert to potential hazards. Speaking

of hazards, if you are running alone, carry identification and always run against traffic, preferably on sidewalks or running paths.

One of the best ways to improve and get more enjoyment out of running is to enter road races. The experience of finishing a running race is exhilarating. Start with the goal of a 5K (3.1 miles) road race, “fun run,” or a relay race with your running friends. Races can provide the foundation for enjoying a long life of running.

HEALING ENERGY

E

very cell in our body requires energy. Medical doctors call it “vital energy.” Chiropractic doctors call it “innate energy.” Physicians practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) call it “Qi” (pronounced “chi”) energy. But whatever you call it, from the top down, inside out, our body is filled with energy. Energy for healing. Energy for action and energy to drive our daily life.

According to Eastern Medicine, our body contains a vast network of channels, termed meridians, to move this energy around. The energy itself is not confined to our bodies. We radiate a vast spectrum

of energy, and it affects those around us. Energy radiates from us in the form of emotions. We’ve all felt that wash of negative energy from a Debbie Downer: a negative energy we just want to escape from. Others radiate in the positive spectrum of the energy field, and we can’t soak up enough of them. Healthy people surround themselves with people they want to emulate: people who make them feel good.

Disciples of some Eastern healing disciplines learn to control their internal energy. For example, practitioners of martial arts learn to focus their Qi energy so that they can

funnel all their power into their fist, allowing them to break boards and bricks. Yoga was originally intended to develop a link between the mind and body. In fact, the term “yoga” literally means to “yoke” the mind and body together as one, like a horse and buggy.

By harnessing the energy of the body with the mind, yoga practitioners can directly influence their body’s health. Advanced practitioners can control such bodily functions as blood pressure and heart and respiration rates to a degree not normally possible.

They can also direct energy inward in a manner that facilitates healing and maintains health. In fact, many studies have shown yoga to be effective as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease.

One University hospital engaged children with leukemia in “guided image therapy,” whereby they worked with a counselor one hour per day “imagining” themselves as white knights battling their cancerous dragons.

This group had a better outcome than a control group. Nowadays, mainstream medicine utilizes guided therapy to deal with loss of control, fear, panic, anxiety, helplessness, and uncertainty in patients facing major medical conditions.

Eastern Medicine believes the body ’s energies are concentrated at certain points.

These reservoirs, or “batteries,” are termed “chakras.”

The energy from the

chakras is distributed around the body by energy channels termed meridians.

When you cut your finger, the blood has to clot, a scab has to form, and the skin has to pull together and repair itself. All these things take energy.

As long as the meridians are clear and the chakra batteries are charged up—health is maintained.

There are many ways to bring the energy of the body back into balance, some natural, some not so natural. In modern medicine, one utilizes powerful drugs in order to “assist” the body. For example, a pneumonia infection can overwhelm the body’s ability to heal to the point where it consumes all its energy and the body dies. Antibiotics can “assist” in killing enough bacteria to give the body an upper hand in fighting off the infection. Usually, patients that succumb to these types of opportunistic infections have had their energy levels depleted prior to the infection. The elderly and young are particularly susceptible.

There are other ways to assist the body in maintaining optimum energy balance. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energy levels of specific diagnostic acupuncture points can be measured. With this diagnostic approach, points can be selected that need to be treated in order to bring the body’s energy into balance.

Transcendental meditation, yoga, and other Eastern Medicine disciplines are other approaches that allow one to gain control of their own psychoneuro-immunological system. We are seeing more and more of these techniques being incorporated into mainstream Western Medicine.

If a complementary or alternative medicine might work, he and his patient talk about it and try it.

When Jana saw her doctor prior to her parents' move, she told him, “I have a topic of conversation that I cannot even talk about without breaking down. My parents are moving!” She sobbed hysterically and broke down in his office. He said that he did not think Jana needed

an adjustment of medication, but asked her if she would be willing to seek an alternative therapy.

He suggested that she see Flora Esman, PhD, a hypnotherapist who practices energy work, acupuncture, and tap therapy. Jana met Flora in her office for two different hour-long tap therapy sessions. She finally could talk about her parents’ move and not break down. It did not mean the sadness over their move went away, but her dealing with it without a dramatic reaction was under control.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and tapping consist of activating energy points along one’s body in much the same way acupuncture relieves pain—except without the needles! Energy blockages are cleared quickly and effectively, allowing for healing and a sense of overall wellbeing. It is a safe and easy way to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression, and to control weight gain and physical pain. The tap therapy seemed to help Jana.

therapies. Doctors are embracing CAM therapies, too, often along with mainstream medical techniques.

This combined use spawned a new term: “integrative medicine.” So what is CAM?

CAM therapies CAM medicines change constantly as treatments undergo testing and move into the mainstream. There are many therapies available, and looking at a classified listing helps make a little more organizational sense. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

(NCCAM), the agency that funds scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine, classifies them broadly this way: • • • •

just a single practice or remedy—such as massage—but many practices that center on a philosophy, such as the power of nature or the presence of energy in your body.

Examples of whole medical systems include: • Ancient healing systems.

These healing systems arose long before conventional Western medicine and include Ayurveda from India and traditional Chinese medicine.

• Homeopathy. This approach uses minute doses of a substance that causes symptoms to stimulate the body’s selfhealing response.

• Naturopathy. This approach focuses on non-invasive treatments to help your body do its own healing and uses a variety of practices such as massage, acupuncture, herbal remedies, exercise, and lifestyle counseling.

Mind-body techniques strengthen the communication between your mind and your body. Complementary and alternative medicine practitioners say these two systems must be in harmony for you to stay healthy.

Examples of mind-body connection techniques include meditation, prayer, and relaxation and art therapies.

Biologically-based practices include dietary supplements and herbal remedies. These treatments use ingredients found in nature.

Examples of herbs include ginseng,

ginkgo, and echinacea, while examples of other dietary supplements include selenium, glucosamine sulfate, and SAMe. Herbs and supplements can be taken as teas, oils, syrups, powders, tablets, or capsules.

Manipulative and body-based practices use human touch to move or manipulate a specific part of your body. They include chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation and massage.

Energy medicine is based on the belief that an invisible energy force flows through your body, and when this energy flow is blocked or unbalanced, you can become sick.

Different traditions call this energy by different names, such as chi, prana, and life force. The goal of these therapies is to unblock or rebalance your energy force. Energy therapies include gi gong, therapeutic touch, reiki, and magnetic therapy.

Work with your conventional medical doctor to help you make informed decisions regarding CAM treatments. Even if your doctor cannot recommend a specific practitioner, he or she can help you understand possible risks and benefits before you try a treatment. It’s especially important to involve your doctor if you’re pregnant, have medical problems, or take prescription medicine. Do not stop or change your traditional treatment—such as the dose of your prescription medications— without talking to your doctor. Keep your doctor updated on any CAM

therapies you are using, including herbal and dietary supplements.

Just because the benefits of an alternative therapy are not backed up by scientific proof does not mean it does not work. Our grandmothers had lots of herbal remedies that helped us with many a stomach ache or flu symptom. But if a therapy is costly or dangerous to a person, many doctors would not support it. Unless alternative therapies are approved by different agencies, they are not covered under most health insurance policies. A patient usually pays out of pocket for the therapy.

Take the fight to your fall allergies

F

or allergy sufferers, the crisp, cool temperatures and changing leaves of autumn evoke more than a sense of awe at Nature’s splendor.

They also signify that discomfort— in the form of itchy, watery eyes, sniffling, sneezing, wheezing, and coughing—is back for the duration of the season. What’s the source of these symptoms? Ragweed and other pollen-producing weeds are among the biggest culprits, but mold spores take their toll, as well.

Why do allergy symptoms arise?

Allergy symptoms develop due to a case of mistaken identity. When people afflicted with allergies inhale tiny pollen grains, mold spores, or other allergens, their body reacts as if it is

Mold is an issue both indoors and outdoors, and like ragweed pollen, mold spores can easily become airborne. Damp basements and bathrooms are the biggest breeding grounds for indoor mold, though it can proliferate in any room of the house where conditions are conducive. Outdoors, mold thrives in those heaping, damp piles of fallen leaves that litter the landscape in autumn.

But there’s no ragweed in my yard!

Allergic to school?

If you’re allergic to plants that produce pollen in springtime, there’s a good chance you’ll react to ragweed in autumn, as well. In fact, this is true for approximately three-quarters of the people who suffer from springtime allergies. And ridding your yard of ragweed is no guarantee that you

Allergy immunotherapy, which exposes you to gradually increasing doses of an allergen until your body develops a tolerance to it, can also be effective and may be recommended by your doctor.

Be sure to consult with your physician before using any allergy medication, even if it is over-thecounter. Your doctor can verify through testing that you are, indeed, experiencing an allergic response rather than the common cold or a case of the flu, which may have similar symptoms (though allergies do not cause body aches or fever).

Also, be aware that some common over-the-counter antihistamines can cause drowsiness. Be sure to read the package label carefully!

Minimizing allergen exposure Though it’s not realistic to think you can completely exclude allergens from your environment, you can take steps to minimize your exposure to pollen and mold spores. They include: • If possible, avoid outdoor activity from 5:00 to 10:00 am when pollen production is at its peak. Pollen levels are particularly high when it’s dry and windy, especially when these conditions occur right after a rainy day.

• If you must perform yard work that increases your exposure to pollen and mold—such as mowing or raking leaves—wear a pollen-filtering mask.

• Shower immediately after spending time outdoors to wash pollen from your hair and clothes.

• When driving, keep your windows rolled up. If you need to use the air conditioner, set it on “recirculate.”

• Wipe down pets with a damp towel immediately after they spend time outdoors.

• Install a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter in your furnace. A vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter is helpful, too.

• To discourage the growth of mold in your home, maintain the humidity below 50%. Install a dehumidifier in the basement and in other damp, enclosed areas. Even the “little” chunks of ice that broke lose to form icebergs were actually quite sizeable. There were loud cracking noises and deep rumbles like distant, rolling thunder. Falling ice caused pleasant little ripples on the surface of the water. The Lu-Lu Belle rose up. The Lu-Lu Belle settled down.

Go ahead and sing along. You know the lyrics. “If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Lu-Lu would be lost.”

On the way back, there were a lot more sea otters snoozing on the ice.

We coasted up. People and sea otters stared at each other for a while and went about our business. Capt. Fred said that the presence of so many otters was a really good sign. They depend on the insulation of their fur for survival and even the tiniest

When the oil tanker Exxon Valdez broke open on Bligh Reef in 1989, many people thought it was paradise lost for the wildlife, he said. Massive efforts were undertaken to rescue and clean up birds, sea mammals, and the rocky shore. The next year, somewhat fewer people showed up.

The third year, the remaining highly motivated volunteers cleaned up the mess made by the people who had cleaned up the previous two years.

As we approached the harbor, Capt. Fred turned over the wheel to Katie so she could take us in. Abby said her turn was the next day. He wants his crews to be capable of handling the boat if something should happen to him. This is a lot trickier than you might think. The harbor is a jumble of commercial fishing boats, pleasure craft, and charter boats.

Local teen builds his body

eenagers are always on the go, and 16-year-old Evan Fritts is no exception. But, he is moving at up to 75 mph in a race kart that is 4½ feet wide and 6 feet long and sits about one inch off the ground. He has done his practicing and racing at the Pittsburg International Race Complex in Pennsylvania, learning to navigate 1-mile-long tracks. He has trained with several driving coaches to learn and understand the craft of racing and how to tune the kart to respond to weather temperatures, humidity, rain, the amount of rubber on the track, etc.

Evan has also learned that his efforts to develop into a professional driver have demanded that he be in top physical shape. He says, “I realized the physical demands of the sport and was admittedly exhausted after driving, and my body felt pretty beat up.” His parents had encouraged him to “fuel” his body with good food and lots of water, and he felt that the demands on his body, including having to wear full protective gear (hot!), necessitated his building up his strength and endurance.

Eighteen months ago, he began to accompany his parents three nights a week as they visited a local fitness club. He noticed the benefits of those 1-hour sessions within three months and decided to work out more often.

He upped his routine to five nights a week for 90 minutes each, and found that he wanted to get involved in more serious bodybuilding and needed a gym that offered “more hardcore training opportunities.”

He found one gym, then another, that helped him prepare for the rigors of the race track, noting that he

didn’t feel so exhausted when he came off the track. But, he found himself “hooked” on the idea of bodybuilding, and now trains five or six days a week for two hours per day. His dedication has caught the eye of the gym owner, who has encouraged Evan to compete nationally in Men’s Physique competitions.

Evan hopes to have the opportunity to compete in a Natural Physique competition for teens, but also continues to race. During his first year, he practiced nearly every weekend.

He races during the season from March through August. His long-term goal, after high school at St. Francis de Sales, where he is a junior, is to race Formula One or Indy cars. He knows it will take a lot of practice and plenty of experience, and he is grateful that his parents are willing to make the commitment to get him to practices and races.

Perspectives on prostate cancer screening

P

rostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men and claims approximately 30,000 lives a year. As common as it is, a majority of men with prostate cancer will have no symptoms from the disease.

Decades ago, a diagnosis of prostate cancer could only be made by a digital exam of the prostate and usually at a more advanced and incurable stage. Over the past few decades, advancements in laboratory and imaging technologies have given urologists better tools in helping improve cure rates for this disease.

One such test is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Since the advent of PSA, urologists have been able to catch prostate cancer in its early stages and decrease the rate of death from the disease.

Along with PSA testing, the Department of Urology at the University of Toledo Medical Center is utilizing MRI of the prostate as part of our cancer-screening protocol, making us the only center in the region to do so. This exciting new technology is more accurate than PSA and digital exam alone, and with it, we have improved biopsy yield rates and prevented many men from having unnecessary prostate biopsies.

However, screening for prostate cancer is not for everyone, since a majority of men will die with prostate cancer and not from it. As a result, the American Urological Association recommends directed screening

for at-risk men. Screening should begin at 55 years of age and continue every other year until the age of 69.

Men with a family history of prostate cancer could be eligible to start screening earlier than 55 years of age.

Finally, men should be in good overall health and have a life expectancy of at least 10 years prior to entering a screening protocol.
