HEALTHY START aims to reduce Florida’s infant mortality rate, improve birth outcomes and promote healthy child development. Towards this goal, Healthy Start works with local prenatal care providers and birthing facilities to screen all pregnant women and infants, identify at-risk individuals and refer them to Healthy Start for needed services. These services benefit those who need them most; they may be our friends, neighbors and relatives. Unfortunately, the costs of a poor birth outcome are great, not only on a personal level but also on a financial and societal level. By investing in Healthy Start we invest in our communities and Florida’s future.

OUR COALITION
HEALTHY START OF NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA is one of 31 Healthy Start Coalitions in the state. The Coalition serves 12 counties covering 8,422 square miles, most of which is rural with low population density. Income levels within the Coalition are slightly lower than the state and poverty rates are higher. Only four of the 12 counties have attendant medical and birthing center facilities, requiring many moms and babies to travel long distances for delivery. Despite these regional hardships, Healthy Start of North Central Florida uses its funding strategically to reach a large percentage of the communities we serve—and specifically, families with pregnant women, infants and children up to age three who are most at-risk for poor birth outcomes and need help with healthy child development. SERVICES Prenatal care, counseling, care coordination, and support and education in childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting, tobacco cessation and women’s health. Coalition Counties
