BASKETBALL Year 8 League Champions!!!

Year 9 Football Title chances dashed at the death! HA v Stockland Green 8-3 Although going 1-0 down early on, Heartlands led at the half way 3-1 with two goals from Mardoche Koko and one from Mohammed Mohammud. Their scoring continued from early in the second half with two further goals from Shafiqur Rahman and Joshua Richards.

Year 8 Basketball Team - WINNERS!

The year 8 Girls Basketball team smashed Aston Manor in the league final on Wednesday 18th April at the Nechells Sports Centre. The nervous team of girls played extremely hard, sticking to the team plan rigorously and defending excellently. The team spirit was amazing and set the atmosphere for the match, making it a pleasure to watch for the spectators who had travelled from school to watch. It was Heartlands’ shooting that won the match by scoring 14 baskets against Aston Manor’s 10. A truly outstanding performance from all

players – lets work hard to maintain our title for next year. Players included: Rebecca Yamalimbu, Gona Sokoli, Victoria Acha, Miar Ibrahim, Meya Lindo, Rhyana Phillips, Aisha Johnson, Asheka Johnson, Chelsea Shrimpton-Clark. Miss Morris

Heartlands then took their foot off the gas and let in 2 sloppy goals. They again stepped up the pressure and finished in style adding three further goals, two more from Mardoche and Shafiqur finished off the rout. HA v Saltley 2-2 Heartlands took the lead early in the second half thanks to Joshua Richards. Saltley pulled a goal back a few minutes later after a very dubious penalty. Heartlands retook the lead through Jackir Ahmed with a wonder goal; however Saltley again drew level late on, to make it 2-2. Heartlands were denied a last minute penalty after a Saltley defender produced a wonder save after it beat the goalkeeper. HA v ParkView 3-3 The match was played on a cold, wet and windy night. Finishing on a draw, continued on page 2

Heartlands were unhappy to lose points in a game they felt they should have won. Goalscorers: Joshua Richards, Jackir Ahmed and Mohammed Mohammud. HA v Castle Vale cancelled Castle Vale cancelled giving Heartlands 3 points, therefore wins at Hodgehill and Washwood Heath would give HA the title. HA v Hodgehill (B) 3-6 Hodgehill B had several A team players and HA defence could not compete with their star striker who scored 5 of their 6 goals.

Heartlands put up a spirited fight back with goals from Lewis Higgings, Jovic Matingou and a wonder goal from distance by

Charmake Elmi; however it was too little, too late and the title challenge was over. Mr Williams

Year 10 Football HA v Hodgehill 2-2 The year 10 football team continue to be hampered by bad luck as their season comes to a close. After taking a 2-0 lead at half time through goals by the lively Mangum Sameth, the team were instructed to keep playing at the marvellous tempo they were demonstrating. After some dubious substitutions by Hodgehill (including the introduction of some Yr 11 players!), the game was swiftly brought back to 2-2. The Heartlands team showed enormous heart competing in the face of adversity. Special credit must go to the midfield who, despite the unfair tactics used by Hodgehill, stood their ground and fought for every loose ball possible. I sincerely hope the year 10 team can take spirit from this game as they had demonstrated an immense maturity throughout the match. A special thank you is also reserved for Joshua Richards, who stepped into goal from the year 9 team and to Mangum Sameth who scored both goals. Mr Ewart

Girls Football Continues to Grow! Girls from year 7 – 10 have been regularly playing in a 5 aside football league, both the under 13 and 15 teams have done exceptionally well finishing 2nd in their leagues. On Monday 12th March tweleve girls (Shantae Smith, Quotre Elmi, Taye Warner, Malikah Gayle, Rebecca Yamalimbu, Gona Sokoli, Amina Mahamud, Shannon Brenan, Gabrielle Mills, Haleema Begum, Fatima Mohammad and Jade Simpson) represented the school in their first girls 11 aside match. The girls were very excited about this but nervous at the same time. They lined up superbly and straight from the off showed their technical ability - passing and moving with Holte being

pinned back to defend. Heartlands took the lead early doors and a second quickly followed. The girls began to tire due to the big pitch and then conceded a sloppy goal. This didn’t stop the girls - who pulled their socks up and began to work harder. Throughout the majority of the game, Heartlands had possession of the ball with goals coming from Haleema, Gona, Quotre, Amina, Shannon and a superb hat trick from Fatima Mohammad. The girls finished the game and showed excellent sportsman ship - shaking hands and acknowledging the opposing team’s efforts. The girls are keen to continue playing 11 aside football and developing their individual skills. An excellent year of football girls! Well done! Miss Brown

split into two activity groups. The groups had to learn how to set up and pitch their own tents so as they could camp one night in a tent and one night in a chalet. After setting up their tents and chalets, one group went mountain biking with Mr Williams and Miss White whilst the other group went orienteering using GPS units with Miss Allen and Mr Shaw. On Saturday the two groups spent the whole day on their expedition across the

Long Mynd mountain range. Mr Williams and Miss White accompanied one group from the Carding Mill Valley back to Long Mynd Camp - whilst Miss Allen and Mr Shaw companied their group from the camp back to Carding Mill Valley. After a long hard day walking, the students were rewarded with a tasty BBQ back at Long Mynd Camp. On Sunday, the final day, Mr Williams and Miss White took their group orienteering with the GPS units and then on to Stokesay Castle. Miss Allen and Mr Shaw took their group mountain biking over the mountains of Long Mynd. After all the weekend activities we headed back to Heartlands; very tired but very pleased after an entertaining weekend away in the country side. Mr Williams

LIVING FOR SPORT PROJECT Back in January, 13 students were selected to participate in the Sky Sports, Living for Sport project. The aim of the project is to use sport to help boost confidence, change behaviours, increase attainment and improve life skills. The students were assigned a mentor, in the form of a former World, Commonwealth and European champion 400m runner Daniel Caines. Daniel has also represented the UK in two Olympic Games, in Athens and Sydney. Together, with Daniel we decided to use boxing as the main sport for the project with an emphasis on improving fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It was also decided by Mr Williams and Mr V that the students would attend local primary schools to participate in leadership lessons where they would help teach the children the skills they have learnt throughout the project. The students attended Heartlands & Hobs Boxing Gym in Tyseley over a 10 week period. During this time they learnt new boxing skills and techniques as well as improved their skipping skills. Their fitness improved as they were worked hard by their boxing coach. During each session they spent time

in the ring, on the punch bags, skipping and circuit training (press ups, sit ups etc). Some of the boys excelled in the boxing and showed real potential, as did certain boys with the skipping. At the end of the project the students attended St Vincent’s, St Josephs and Nechells Primary Schools delivering to each of them a boxing themed fitness session. As a group, they taught the children boxing and movement skills, skipping skills and various other fitness drills and skills in order to improve health and overall fitness. On the 30th March the 3 primary schools were invited to attend a fitness fun day at the Nechelles sports centre. The Living for Sport students led the fun day where there were various fun fitness stations, including a mini boxing ring, skipping and jump rope, exercise bikes and dancing mats. The day finished with a skipping competition between the schools. This experience helped the Living for Sport students improve their confidence and communication skills as well as their leadership skills. In conclusion every student improved their behaviour by either increasing the number of good news, decreasing the number of bad news or both, so therefore well done to all! Mr Williams

Year 8 County Tournament

The year 8 girls’ netball team attended a Birmingham Schools County Tournament on the 28th February. It was a daunting tournament as the school who attend mostly had Academy and club players in their teams. The team seemed overwhelmed with how Arthur Terry passed the ball and moved into the space at the correct time. At the end of the game the team became disheartened with the result 17-0 loss to Heartlands. The team then has two matches off where Miss Allen and Miss Morris encouraged the team to watch the other games at the tournament. The second game was against Edgbaston High School where the team gave a much better perfomance. They made more interceptions and the passing between players was far stronger right up until the last game where the Yr 8 team demonstrated some of the best netball they have played all year. They kept the number of goals the opposition scored down to just 5. The whole team worked and looked after each other, Miss Allen and Miss Morris were extremely proud of the team and their efforts against such tough opponents. Miss Allen
