Seconds out!

uring the Autum term, 12 boys in Year 10 took part in a 10 week boxing course which was delivered as part of the Sky Living for Sport Programme. The main focus was on the fundamentals of boxing and how it can promote self disiplince and respect amongst the students taking part. There was also an opportunity for students to work on their fitness levels by taking part in various drills aimed at raising the heart rate and improving agility. Those taking part did so in an extremely positive manner: throwing themselves into all the drills and giving the punch bags their all! They were also very attentative to their boxing coach, especially during bouts with each other in the ring. The 12 boys are now looking at ways they can employ the skills and attributes learnt during the boxing sessions to design and run an activity day for our local primary schools. The ideas that they have mentioned so far seem very exciting so keep an eye out for them! Congratulations to the following students who were an absolute credit to the Academy: Mohammed Rabnawaz, Lewis Martin, Shiplu Miah, Brandon Compton, Layton Parker, Adil Altaf Hussain, Tayub Javed, Iqrar Zamir, Harun Abdulkadir, Abshir Warsame, Abukar Farrah, Rawa Ali. Mr Ewart

What the Duke of students said: Edinburgh “I enjoyed boxing because I got to test my strength on the punch bags. The scheme best part of the boxing was getting in the ring at the end. The hardest part was the exercise because Mark, our trainer, pushed us to the limit but it’s like people say - no pain, no gain.” Layton Parker

“I enjoyed boxing because we got to test our skills and our boxing techniques on the bags. The best part was when we tested our skills and techniques in the ring. The hardest part was when we had to remember the boxing techniques and at what time we should use them because it was hard to remember sometimes.” Adil Altaf-Hussain “The part of the boxing I enjoyed the best was the punch bags because I got to punch something without getting into trouble. It was hard when we had to work out because my muscular endurance was bad. The part I found most fun was when we had to spar in the ring.” Brandon Compton

We are looking for committed students who would like to gain an extra qualification in a practical setting. The DofE programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on a sofa watching life pass you by. You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and for Gold, a Residential. You’ll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only).

If you are in year 9 and you’re interested in taking part, please see Miss Allen for more information.
