2019 FSU Student Survival Guide

Welcome Back to Ferris State University! Hello from Ferris State University! I hope you will find our campus and Big Rapids to be places where you quickly feel at home. Woodbridge Ferris and his wife, Helen, founded our University in 1884 as a place to provide opportunities for all students to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives. As we celebrate our 135th anniversary, we are committed through education to helping you achieve your hopes and dreams. Together we can make this a memorable and transformative experience for you. Research shows and our experience confirms that students who are actively engaged in their studies and outside-the-classroom experiences are much more likely to succeed in college. It is important you become involved and participate in the opportunities available, both on campus and in the community. I encourage you to get engaged, make new friends, be an active participant in your education, make good choices and help make a positive difference for others. We have more than 220 Registered Student Organizations on campus that include everything from academic and professional associations to groups devoted to the arts and athletics. There are concerts, speakers, athletic events, volunteer and networking opportunities, and special events to experience throughout the year. If you enjoy playing sports, there are intramural and club teams to join. You may want to consider our study abroad opportunities, which many of our students find to be life-changing experiences. Please plan to attend our annual Founders’ Day Celebration and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Aug. 29. This special day honors the 135th Anniversary of our founding and is a great opportunity to make new friends. There will be entertainment, information booths, giveaways and of course, free ice cream. At Ferris, we are committed to your success. We provide many resources to support you academically and to help meet your personal needs. The Academic Literacies

David Eisler Center in the FLITE Library provides one-stop access to resources including faculty and staff expertise in reading, writing, mathematics and optometric assessments, all designed to facilitate your college success. The Birkam Health Center’s services are designed to assist with both your physical and emotional health. These and many other resources are available to ensure you have the best experience possible. I am pleased you have chosen Ferris State University and very much look forward to meeting and visiting with you. On behalf of our entire Ferris community, best wishes for great success in the year ahead. Go Bulldogs!

THE BIG EVENT Every year, students at Ferris State University get excited to help out their community during the annual Big Event. The Big Event isn’t only FSU’s biggest volunteer event; it’s also the largest one-day, student-run service project in Michigan. With the exception of the event being canceled for the 2017-18 school year, the Big Event has been helping Big Rapids residents clean up trash, leaves and other debris from their yards and alleys every year since 2008. Students are encouraged to form teams and work together to collect debris, although individuals are also welcome to participate. Starting at 8 a.m. on the day of the

CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP, ACTIVITIES AND CAREER SERVICES

Located on the first floor of FLITE, adjacent to the main library area, the Office of Multicultural Student Services promotes diversity of all kinds at Ferris State University. The office also helps students find scholarships and provides a comfortable space for studying and meeting new people.

The Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services is located next to the bookstore in the University Center. CLACS is FSU’s resource for students who want to get involved with a registered student organization, or start their own, university activity planning, Greek life, student government, volunteering through FSU, and the career center. CLACS offices also house some 5-star RSOs, including the Student Veterans Association office.

13

2019 FSU Student Survival Guide

What Is An RSO And How To Get Involved Coming to college can be both exciting and nerve-racking, but finding a group of friends early in the year can help ease those nerves. Registered student organizations, more commonly referred to as RSOs, are groups for students who have the same interests and hobbies to come together and enjoy those interests with other people. Ferris has more than 220 RSOs, and that number is constantly growing. In order to form a new RSO, the group needs at least five members and one Ferris employee adviser. Students interested in starting a new RSO can contact the Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services (CLACS) for more information. WHAT KINDS OF RSOS ARE AVAILABLE? RSO topics range greatly; some are religious or political groups, such as the His House Christian Fellowship and the College Democrats and College Republican RSOs. Other RSOs focus more on hobbies, such as the eSports Club, the Snow Shredders, which is a skiing and snowboarding club, and Entertainment Unlimited, which works to plan on-campus events. Multicultural RSOs offer an opportunity for minority students to interact with and meet one another and are another popular option at Ferris. Some of these organizations include the Black Student

Union, Asian Student Organization, Hispanic Student Organization, and International Student Organization amongst others. Ferris also has multiple RSOs for the LGBTQ+ community, such as Advocacy and Education of Gender Identity and Sexuality (AEGIS) and Diverse Sexuality & Gender Alliance (D-SAGA). Many RSOs focus on bringing students from the same programs together, as well as bringing Greek organizations together. For example, the College of Business has 19 separate RSOs associated with it, including American Marketing Association (ASA) and Graphic Arts Association (GAA). Greek organizations make up a large number of RSOs. Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE) is FSU's Greek criminal justice organization

and the Interfraternity Council is designed to bring members from fraternities together to create leadership in the Greek community. WHY JOIN AN RSO? RSOs are an easy way to find a group of people with similar interests and to develop friendships with people on campus. From a professional standpoint, RSOs, especially professionally focused RSOs, are a great way to network with people in your field, build your résumé and gain leadership skills. The combination of friendship, fun and professional benefits are all extremely valuable during and after college.

Ferris coach Andy Bronkema directed his team to another 20-win season. FERRIS MEN BASKETBALL TEAM NOTCHES ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON By Ferris State Athletics BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University men’s basketball squad wrapped up its 2018-19 slate with the program’s fifth consecutive 20-win campaign as the Bulldogs narrowly missed receiving the program’s fifth-straight NCAA Division II Tournament berth when the national organization unveiled its postseason selections in a live online announcement. The Bulldogs had been seventh in the final regular-season NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Rankings announced this past week following the conclusion of the regular-season. A total of eight teams were chosen for the regional field. This season, following a historic 2017-18 season in which FSU went 38-1 overall and won the school’s first NCAA Division II National Championship, the Bulldogs compiled a 20-12 overall record under head coach Andy Bronkema while notching its fifth-straight 20-win campaign. The Bulldogs placed second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division standings. Along with the second-place league finish, the Bulldogs also reached the GLIAC Tournament for the fifth consecutive year and earned the right to host a quarterfinal-round home contest. Overall, FSU went 12-3 at home this season inside Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs had a pair of All-GLIAC choices in senior guard DeShaun Thrower (Muskegon) and senior forward Markese Mayfield (Grand Rapids/ Godwin Heights) while both Mayfield along with sophomore wing Jaylin McFadden (Detroit/East English Village) were tabbed to the GLIAC AllDefensive Team announced this past weekend. A total of 12 of the Bulldogs’ 16 squad members are eligible to return for the 2019-20 season as FSU had only four seniors this season. The past five years with 20 or more wins ranks as the greatest five-year stretch in program history.
