Current job title/ responsibilities: Recently, I was promoted to the position of regional director for Psychiatric Medical Care after being the program director for the Harbor Beach Community Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions program since it opened in 2013. It is my responsibility to work with hospitals to implement and manage multiple intensive outpatient behavioral health programs for seniors, Senior Life Solutions. PMC is a national behavioral healthcare management company with more than 70 Senior Life Solutions programs across the country, including the two local programs with Harbor Beach Community Hospital and McLaren Caro Region Hospital. I currently oversee the operations of eight programs in my region, which includes Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. What is the best aspect of your job?

I love what I do because I see the direct, positive impact we have on the lives of our patients. We help make the “golden years” truly golden, by helping seniors adjust to life changes that can come with aging. I love to hear about their life stories and view on life. Why is your community a good place to live and work? I grew up in Huron County and have always loved the area. Not only do we have the best beaches, we

have the best people here. Everyone is willing to help each other. The professional community supports one another and is always willing to help find the resources that are needed for a patient, even if they are not working with them directly. What one person has influenced you the most? My mother, Shirley Pawlitz, has influenced me the most. She taught me from a young age the importance of hard work to get to where you want to be in life. She also taught me accountability and a good work ethic. In addition, my mother has always worked with geriatrics and unlike other caregivers I have seen, she has always treated the people she was caring for as just that, people, and not just a job that she has to do. She raised me to appreciate the contributions seniors have made to the world, making me want to choose a career where I can help those seniors.

The Notebook is my favorite movie, with A Beautiful Mind and National Lampoons Vacation as close seconds. What are your three favorite movies? “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. The book really makes you look sy how you are living your life to the fullest each and every day. It also makes you grateful for things that you take for granted, such as being able to walk or eat independently. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? Winnie the Pooh. He has a great group of friends that all support each other even though they each have some quirks. He also gets to have fun and eat honey most of the day!

What is your biggest goal in life?

My biggest goal in life is to raise my boys to be caring responsible adults. I want them to contribute to the world around them and care for others.

What do you do to relieve stress? When there is nice weather, I like to walk. I will often give myself a break in the middle of my day by going for a short half hour walk outside. In the winter, there

healthcare needs from several different angles, from a public health and population health preventative standpoint to treating an acute and emergency medical conditions. • Working with such dedicated individuals at the health department and at the hospitals who truly are focused on providing the best care possible to their communities, who essentially are their friends and families. When it comes down to it, the people in Huron County are friendly, the schools are good, and having family around to help with the kids and spend lots of time with means so much to the both of us.

Current job title/ responsibilities: I hold a seat on the Huron County Nature Center’s board of directors and act as the center’s volunteer naturalist. My position is a volunteer-based, unpaid, spot. As any non-profit organization that relies on volunteers, I wear many hats at the nature center. I recently gave up the treasurer seat on the executive board to focus my efforts on new programming. We want to start offering camps, workshops and more festivals (which will take a lot of time and money)! Fundraising and scheduling have become a full-time gig for me. Beyond that, the board and myself work tirelessly to create an indoor and outdoor space for families to come and learn, explore,

What is your biggest goal in life? Ultimately, I just want a life where my children can say they are proud to have me as their mom. Like I said before, all of my work at the nature center goes back to them. I want to build something for them. I want to be part of creating a place where kids and families — like my own — can reconnect with each other and with nature. I want to help the nature center grow into a weekly adventure for families to hike, bike, and learn in our museum — both from our exhibits and a well educated staff of volunteers. I am incredibly lucky to work with a wonderful group there, and I foresee some big things happening.

What do you do to relieve stress? I do a version of yoga. My version includes pulling out my mat and putting on some music. From there, I may get one or two poses in before a dog or two dogs, sometimes with a cat, and a toddler come to “help” me. After that, it turns into 30-45 minutes of laying on the mat with the above mentioned creatures. It may not be true yoga or relaxation, but I feel better after it.

What are your three favorite movies? Jurassic Park, Return to Me, and Moulin Rouge. I’m a sap for love stories, dinosaurs, and musicals. Name a book that has influenced you.

“The Scent of Water” by Naomi Zacharias. I’ve read it five or six times now. It’s an autobiography about a woman who is dealt a major load of lemons and turns it into a trip around the world helping families and women in various hardships, from tsunamis to victims of domestic violence. It’s a good reminder of a few things. First, no matter how bad you think any moment is, it could be worse. Second, one person can make a difference. And third, no matter the lemons, you can always make lemonade. It’s a Christian-based author, but I think it’s a beneficial read no matter your religious background!

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? Can I pick two? Or create a character that combines two? I can’t decide between Mary Poppins and Dana Scully. Mary Poppins for her kindness, grace, and musical abilities (not to mention she’s magic). I find her to be just as enchanting as an adult as I did when I was little. But as a huge X-Files fan, who doesn’t want to be Dana Scully? She has literal out-of-this-world adventures, and she’s incredibly intelligent, and has a calm confidence about her. Both are very strong characters!

What do you do to relieve stress? I have been an avid long distance runner since 1993. During the year, I can be found at many running events in which I am able to compete, spend time with many of my running friends, and also spend time with my wife and daughter as they come to most of (and often participate in) the running events as well.

What are your three favorite movies? Prefontaine, which is a great movie about the life and times of Steve Prefontaine, who is a young distance runner who pursued the dream of Olympic gold and the story of his life and tragic end. Another movie I enjoy is National Lampoon’s Vacation. It provides a lot of humor and shows how a family as crazy as the Griswolds can get through just about anything. Finally, I enjoy any horror movie. I am a fan of the horror movies because it provides a way to get immersed into another world and see a story play out. They are enjoyable to watch because they are fictional. Name a book that has influenced you.

The book that has the biggest influence on me is the Bible. These basic instructions before leaving earth provide the advice and guidelines in which I live by. Life is full of many challenges, but no challenge is too big or too small to overcome.

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? If I were to be a fictional character, I would choose Santa Claus. Santa provides smiles and happiness to so many children and he gets to travel all over the world.

What quote do you live by? I have always lived by the quote, “What is popular is not always right; what is right is not always popular.” I saw that quote back when I was about 13 years old and it really made me ponder the true meaning of it and how it applies to me personally. Life is full of many challenges and this quote is easy to refer back to, especially when it comes to making the right decision over what is most popular.

NTFT Clerk USPS — My day begins at 7 a.m. I start the morning reports and then I unload the packages/mail dropped off by the mail truck and Amazon. I sort the mail and packages and get it to the carriers. After clearing the mail and packages for the carriers, I put up the post office box mail/ packages. Afterward, I hand out the accountables to the carriers. At 9, the window opens for service, and I sell stamps, money orders, ready post products, affix proper postage to packages, letters, and flats. I answer questions regarding mail regulations, procedures, postage rates, hold mail requests, address changes, etc. I sort the incoming and outgoing mail/ packages according to type and destination and make sure the items are in proper condition for mailing. At 3:30 p.m., I collect all outgoing mail from the collection boxes and prepare it for dispatch. At 4, I close the window for the day, load up all the outgoing

mail/packages, and put them in the proper APCs. I finish up the deposit, the evening reports and then lock up. What is the best aspect of your job?

I can’t pinpoint just one aspect of the job that I absolutely love because I love everything about my job! Sure there are challenges, and every day is different, but it keeps the job from getting stale. USPS offers upward mobility, excellent benefits, and great retirement. There is also the ability to put in to transfer to different locations throughout the state and country. I am grateful to be able to work with not only the public on a daily basis but with some pretty fantastic coworkers and bosses. Why is your community a good place to live and work? NICOLE CHAMPAGNE I have an ability to change lives every day at my job. Not just the way that we all change lives each day, but in a profound, noticeable, life altering way. I get to see tremendous growth every day in my clients. I’m inspired each day when I get to hear a child who has never spoke utter their first word, a little one who use to cry all day before treatment break out in laughter, or a young person who has been hurting themselves be freed from restraints or equipment they had before they came to us. My dad has been the most influential person in my life. His memory is with me every day. He was intelligent, kind and hardworking. He lived with a growth mindset that he spread to his children, teaching us that we can always do anything we put our minds to and we will never be done learning. Having an outlook like this on life, that it’s up to you and your hard work, pushes me to continue to try to be my best for my family and clients. My dad died when I was still young. I remember holding his hand when he said his last words, “I’m trying.” Simple yet forever ringing in my head, to always try until your last breath to give all your love and energy to all you do. MIKE GALLAGHER Current job title/responsibilities: Staff writer for the Huron Daily Tribune. What is the best aspect of your job? My co-workers. They have welcomed me with open arms since I began at the Tribune last February. Another great aspect of my job is meeting new people and hearing their story. Why is your community a good place to live and work? The people. Much like Peck, where I grew up, everyone is super friendly, supportive and welcoming. What one person has influenced you the most? My parents. My Mom was the one who initially supported me going into journalism, and has been my biggest fan for my whole life. My Dad has always pushed me to be the best that I can be. What is your biggest goal in life? Professionally, my biggest goal was to work at a newspaper like the Huron

Daily Tribune, now it’s to continue working for the HDT. Personally, my biggest goal in life is to just be happy. What do you do to relieve stress? Spend time with family and friends. What are your three favorite movies? Superbad, Goodfellas, and The Departed. Name a book that has influenced you. “King of the World: Muhammad Ali and the Rise of an American Hero.” If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty.
