What you need to know Benzie Central had its best season in years in 2021, but it will be a tough act to follow after losing pitching aces Dylan Bates and Chris Dunlop. That being said, Gottardo believes the last year’s supporting cast will be ready to take on starring roles this year. “Sophomore Danny Wallington returns after a great freshman season as our starting catcher. an impact this season. Though the Huskies are young, Gottardo said what they lack in experience they make up for in sheer athleticism. “This is one of the more athletic teams that I have seen come through in my years at Benzie Central,” he said. “We will definitely be able to play an exciting style of baseball this spring and be competitive in every game.”

COACH’S CORNER: “Last year we finished second in the conference. We did lose a big piece in Ethan (Novak), who was our No. 1 golfer last year. We have to replace him, but I think we can be in the top half of the conference this year with a lot of experienced seniors coming back.”

Benzie Central golf returns three of its top four golfers from last year’s team that finished second in the

Out of my top six last year, I’ve got three seniors that are back, and I’ve got one freshman that I think will crack the top four.” The Huskies finished tied with Frankfort in the Northwest Conference standings last year. Olson expects good things out of his three returners: Ethan Lemmen,

Drew Warsecke and Caden Stuart. Ethan Novak going from teammate to conference foe is a substantial loss for the Huskies, but Olson feels an underclassmen has what it takes to score points for Benzie. “One of my freshmen coming in, he’s going to dual sport in baseball and golf is Christien Westcott,” Olson said. “He’s very promising.”

It is not always easy to hit the course in March in northern Michigan, so Olson is still working to ascertain what the Huskies will be bringing to the table this season. “I’m just kind of getting some numbers situated right now. With the weather we haven’t been able to really practice,” he said. “I have

Benzie Central Girls Varsity Soccer

COACH’S CORNER: “The team has struggled over the last few years to find the back of the net. This year there are high hopes that we will be able to score more goals and find ourselves fighting for more wins than we have had in the past,” Barker said. “We have some strong players returning, some new players joining us and we hope to put it together. There is a complete change in the coaching staff this year, so there will definitely be some learning times, but we hope to put things together this season for a successful year.”

Benzie Central soccer struggled last season. The Huskies were inexperienced after a senior-laden roster never took to the field in 2020

due to the coronavirus pandemic. Benzie recorded a record of 0-131 last year, but with a few talented players returning and a gifted foreign

exchange student leading the charge, first-year head coach Scott Barker hopes the squad will be more competitive this season.

What you need to know

“Brooklyn’s intensity and aggressiveness has increased already since last year,” Scott Barker said. Ava Bechler will be back in the net for the Huskies, and the sophomore will look to continue the progress she began last season. “She was thrown into the position last year with no experience, and improved throughout the season,” Scott Barker said. “She was our team MVP last season. She will be working with a goalie coach and she is expected to be a force in goal.” Scott Barker said Nora Kech, who hails from Belgium, will be a nice addition to the team. “She loves soccer and has played

for many years in her home country,” he said. The Huskies may not find themselves competing for a state title this season, or even in the top half of the conference, but every journey begins with a single step, and Scott Barker believes the program can take a big step forward this season. “The team has struggled in the previous seasons, only averaging about one win per season,” he said. “The hope is that will all change this year. With experienced returners, new coaches and a desire to win, the team is hopeful that they will achieve many more victories than they have in the past.”

Last year, Benzie’s roster was filled with players new to the varsity level after the pandemic wiped out the previous season. Allie Barker will look to follow up her first-team All-Northwest Conference junior season with a strong senior campaign. “Allie was elected MVP of the team her freshman year, and was selected as the best offensive and best defensive player last season,” Scott Barker said. “She will be a senior this year and plans to give her all to make the team the best they can be.” Allie’s sister Brooklyn, a junior, will also be a key contributor to the team.

She was our third baseman last year,” Brautigam said. “Nona was an allconference, all-district and all-regional player for us last year. I’m expecting big things out of her.” Brautigam said he’s excited to have Autumn Wallington back behind the plate. Wallington was named first-team all-conference last season after hitting .355 with 19 RBIs and 28 runs scored. Ryleigh Frisbee will look to get the Huskies off to a good start as the team’s lead-off hitter. “She was our shortstop last year and did an excellent job for us as our slaphitter. I think she hit right around .365 on the season,” Brautigam said. “She had almost 40 hits on the season. She’s back and looks even better this year.” Brautigam said Gabrielle Barron, Katie Quick, Maicee Jones performed well last season and should have a good year. “We expect to have a solid season and kind of get back to where we were before COVID hit us,” he said.

COACH’S CORNER: “Last season, coming off a COVID year, it was more difficult than expected. We got shut down for COVID right in the middle of our season, and then our JV program also got shut down before that,” Brautigam said. “It really disrupted our flow in our season. It was kind of an unusual season after coming off of several seasons where we were very successful. It was a bit of a disappointment as far as our overall record.”

Frankfort Varsity Softball By all accounts, Frankfort softball had a pretty solid 2021 season. The Panthers went 21-11 and finished second in the competitive Northwest

best to make sure we can fill those roles. It’s an opportunity for a couple of the younger kids to step into those middle infield spots.” Thompson said to find success the team will need contributions from everyone in the lineup. “I’ve always said that what really makes or breaks our season are the role players. The kids who run bases in practice; the kids who hit in the six, seven and eight spots — the kids like Karlee Beaver, Elli Tiesworth, and Sam Tester — those kids are the ones that are really going to make or break your season. “With Taylor Myers, Kinzee Stockdale and Emma Mackenzie, you know those girls are going to hit, but what’s going to make our season is bringing along those younger kids, having them step into roles and having them be positive contributors to the big picture.” Thompson expects stiff competition from conference foes Benzie Central, Kingsley and Glen Lake, and said the Panthers will need to focus on all the little things that lead the team to success. “We don’t really talk a whole lot about outcomes after we set our goals — we worry about the process. Like, OK what are we going to have to do to win the league?” he said. “What are we going to have to do to win the district? Obviously, quality practices; having everybody in school with a strong GPA; everybody on the same page with their confidence, their character and their composure and those sorts of things.”

Thompson said the loss of two first-team all-conference players in Maggie Kelly and Cora Scott is significant. Such is the nature of high school athletics, however, and the Panthers have some new young players eager to learn. “We lost two seniors off of that team: Maggie Kelly and Cora Scott — our shortstop and second base. Maggie was our leadoff hitter and it’s hard to replace speed,” Thompson said. “And it’s hard to replace Cora, who played for us forever, but we added four kids: two freshman class kids and two 10th graders who transferred in from other schools.” Taylor Myers will be back in the circle for Frankfort, coming off a season that saw her named AllState honorable mention for her pitching prowess. Additionally, she received first-team all-conference recognition and was named alldistrict and all-region. Myers was just as dangerous at the plate, and finished last season hitting .495 with 14 doubles, three triples and six home runs. Junior Kinzee Stockdale — another first-team all-conference player — will be back behind the plate for the Panthers. The pair can be expected to be key contributors to the team. “Taylor pitched every game last year, and she won 21 games. Having Taylor back and having our catcher back with Kinzee Stockdale is really a bonus, so it’s just a matter of moving a couple things around in the field,” Thompson said. “You can’t replace Maggie and Cora, but we’ll do our

coach Mike Thompson said Frankfort will look to capture conference and district titles, with an emphasis on taking it one day at a time.

COACH’S CORNER: “One of the things that we do is we really stress the process. The girls will set their goals, and they’re going to want to win a Northwest Conference championship,” Thompson said. “We fell just two games short of that last year after winning 30 conference games in a row, so we came a little bit short from winning the league again. We’re going to want to do that, and obviously we want to win the district that we came up short on. But, again, the girls really focus on the process.”

Frankfort Boys Varsity Golf Frankfort golf’s 2021 campaign saw the Panthers come up just two strokes off of qualifying for the state What you need to know

COACH’S CORNER: “Last year, like most of the world, we struggled to field a golf team of varsity players. We made the best of it as it was an incredible opportunity for our underclassmen to be moved up to varsity while many of our upperclassmen dealt with the virus or were quarantined,” said head coach Steve Hammon. “We are all looking forward to a spring high school sports season without the focus on the pandemic day in and day out. “The level of improvement in the scores throughout the season from Adam (Mills), Ethan (Evans) and Elliott (Hammon) last year from the start of the season to the end was remarkable,” he continued. “Their on-course mental focus and their strong practice schedules really helped them rise to the top of the conference.”

Key Returners Adam Mills (senior) Ethan Evans (senior) Elliott Hammon (sophomore)

Key Losses Daniel Newbold (graduated) Casey Confer (graduated)

Daniel Newbold, last year’s team captain, leaves behind some big shoes to fill. Last season, the 2021 graduate was given an outstanding player award from his conference peers and, along with co-captain Casey Confer, kept the Panthers loose throughout the season. “(The loss of) Daniel Newbold and Casey Confer from the team isn’t only a loss of depth to the team, but also a loss of their great and unique personalities on the team. I will miss them and the fun and positive vibes they brought to all of us,” Steve Hammon said. “The close camaraderie of a golf team is a really special thing when it comes to a high school varsity team. Daniel and Casey were great leaders on, and especially off the golf course. What a blast the team had with them.” Fortunately, Frankfort returns three all-conference golfers from last year’s team in Elliot Hammon, who made the first team; Adam Mills, who made the second team; and Ethan Evans, who received honorable mention. The trio should give the Panthers plenty of firepower. Steve Hammon expects Mills to be a force to be reckoned with in the

finals. With some all-conference talent back in the fold, the program could be ready to get over the hump.

Northwest Conference. “Adam is just coming off of his shortened basketball season because of an injury he incurred playing on the football team last fall,” Steve Hammon said. “Adam’s golf swing really developed into a strong and a much more free-flowing but aggressive move at the ball. His physical strength, mental focus and natural athleticism will make him a leading force in the conference and on the links this year.” Steve Hammon said Evans made the greatest improvements last season, and he looks forward to seeing that progression continue this year. “Last year during practices and throughout the season he turned his height and strength into a very large, arching and solid golf swing,” Steve

Hammon said. “His short game was solid when he started the season, and with last year’s hard work I know he’ll be very competitive right out of the gate this year. He was the medalist at the Lake City Invitational and I am expecting Ethan to be medalist and near the top at many events this year.” Elliot Hammon was the only freshmen to earn All-Northwest Conference honors last season. “This year, as a sophomore, he is ready to continue competing in the conference against the older juniors and seniors,” Steve Hammon said. “Elliott has had a slight setback to his health as he has been recovering from surgery during the offseason, but he is looking forward to the start of the spring golf season and getting back out on the golf course.”
