2024 Midland 30 Under 40

MEET SOME OF THE YOUNG LEADERS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY

Although I came into this position with MYPros late last year, it is abundantly clear to me how much talent and drive the young professionals in our community have.

We are thrilled to share the winners of this year’s 30 Under 40 program with the Midland Daily News. These young professionals are truly making a difference in our community and deserve to be recognized.

Sponsoring this contest is a no-brainer for the Midland Business Alliance and MYPros: Midland Young Professionals.

MYPros is an important program of the MBA

because it helps fulfill one of our most important missions: Attracting and retaining young professionals. Through personal and professional development opportunities, community involvement and fostering social relationships, MYPros helps young professionals grow and feel more connected to Midland.

We are excited to see the program continue to grow – more members are joining and becoming more engaged by the day! Over the past year the program has experienced tremendous growth – increasing by over 100 members in 2024 for a total membership of almost 300.

These members are not only participating in all

of the great events and growth opportunities we offer, they are investing in their community as well. Our crowdfunding campaign put more than $60,000 into two great local businesses last year: Allied Group Fitness and Proper Taco. Since the inception of the crowdfund in 2019, the total community impact has eclipsed $200,000. Previous crowdfund winners are Nor’East Outdoors, Three Bridges Distillery, Pizza Baker, Aviator Cookie Company, Grove Tea Lounge and Aster.

Isn’t it inspiring to see what a small but dedicated group of young professionals can do?

MYPros members are all making a major impact

every day in the organizations you work for and the entire Midland community. We recognize the great work of this group at our annual meeting every November. Be sure to check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ MYPros to see who won these awards.

Getting involved in MYPros is easy. For a small annual membership fee, you can participate in all our great events, including educational luncheons, socials and volunteer opportunities. There really is something for everyone.

Hobbies:

I am a huge foodie, so I love trying out new restaurants in our region with friends and family, especially if they are locally owned.

I am a HUGE Saginaw Spirit fan, so you will catch me at the Dow Event Center multiple times a month during hockey season and declining a lot of winter plans because “sorry, there’s a hockey game”.

I have an 11-year-old chihuahua named Paris who is my absolute world, so in the summer I try to be outside with her as much as I can. She loves to join me on hikes and walks and has her own personal side satchel that she sits in (perks of her being only 6 pounds). She also enjoyed a couple of The Commons outdoor concert series in 2024, which was amazing. A night out with live music, drinks, friends, AND my dog? Sold.

Church, volunteer organizations: Volunteering more was one of the personal goals that I set for myself in 2024. Throughout the year I was able to volunteer with the Humane Society of Midland County, the Midland Area Farmers Market, the 2024 Memorial Cup, and the Midland Santa House. Giving back to the community I love gives me such a sense of self and I have even bigger goals for 2025!

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

I can’t even begin to say how much I love the hospitality and tourism industry. I have always lived within the Great Lakes Bay Region and have never wanted to reside anywhere else. Describe a day on the job for you:

My day as an elementary principal begins early with a warm welcome to staff and students as they arrive at the building. A quick scan of the building ensures a smooth and safe start to the day. Another morning routine includes checking and responding to emails; a crucial part of the job involves communication with teachers,

parents, colleagues, and other stakeholders. A large portion of the day is spent observing and learning in action. I move through classrooms, interacting with students, providing feedback to teachers, and assessing the effectiveness of instructional practices. As lunchtime approaches, assisting in the lunchroom and helping out by passing out utensils or getting ketchup for a student is a daily routine to ensure efficient transitions. In addition, partnering with parents/ families is a key responsibility to discuss student progress and provide support. Planning for future professional development for staff, analyzing student data to identify areas for improvement, and working on the school budget are ongoing tasks. A regular part of my day also includes meetings; whether it be with grade-level meetings, student meetings, meetings with district staff or meeting with community partners. I also dedicate time to do various communication tasks such as preparing family and staff newsletters and communicating important information to the school community. In essence, my role as an elementary principal is multifaceted and building and maintaining positive relationships is fundamental to my daily work.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

The best thing about being an educator is the ability to form connections with students and the positive impact that can be made. Witnessing the incredible growth of both staff and students is a truly rewarding and inspiring aspect of being a building principal.

My journey as an educator has been shaped by many individuals who have inspired me through their actions and values. My parents have been the cornerstone of my moral compass. They instilled in me the importance of honesty, empathy, and perseverance. Their unwavering support and guidance have been invaluable throughout my life. In addition to my parents, I have been fortunate to learn from exceptional leaders and mentors who have demonstrated strong ethical conduct, effective communication, and a commitment to make a positive impact. The leaders I have had the opportunity to work under have inspired me to strive for excellence in my own endeavors. Furthermore, the colleagues and staff I work alongside have been a constant source of support and inspiration. They have challenged me to grow, share their expertise, and celebrate my successes. Having a collaborative and supportive environment has encouraged continuous learning and is always pushing me to do better.

Plus, the convenience of having so many amenities and opportunities readily available within reach is so valuable. Church, volunteer organizations: Midland Noon Exchange, Midland Business Alliance, Sanford Youth League.

Describe a day on the job for you.

My days are hectic and vary day to day. WAYGFT Recovery Housing now has two locations with a third in the works between Midland and Tuscola counties. A good portion of my day is spent working with case managers, rehabilitation centers, CMH specialists, recovery coaches and clients. I handle all the intake processing, interviewing and communication with other programs. I spend a good portion of my day trying to find and provide resources for our guys to remove any barriers for their journey. Even though our program is growing and very large, we’re still a small program internally. So I handle most of the marketing, bookkeeping, paying out expenses and all the boring business things. Really it’s a long day of being on the phone, in the car listening and problem solving. The highlight of my day is being able to have one on one or group coaching sessions. I try to meet or check in with all of our guys at least once a week; we have over 30 right now so sometimes it’s a little hard. But it’s important to me to be a part of their lives and they know they have someone that’s there to help if needed.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

I’ll risk sounding cliche here, but I have the greatest job in the world. I get the opportunity to work alongside some of the most courageous, brave, strong, fearless and vulnerable men that are fighting a disease, and winning. In the recovery world we are surrounded by horrible

(What

Are You Grateful For Today)

statistics and odds for people to be successful. Then you walk into WAYGFT Ranch or WAYGFT Hilltop and you see guys that are excited to be a part of something that’s bigger than themselves and helping the person next to them. I know recovery can be scary to both those that are in active addiction and those that have to witness it. But when you get to see the other side of it, watching someone build themselves back up from nothing. Rebuilding relationships with their kids, parents, families, becoming financially independent, getting a license, buying a car and being excited to be alive for the first time. I don’t know if I could explain how that feels, but I do know being a small part of that is the best part of working in my industry.

Who are some role models that you look up to?

Cheesy, I know! But my parents, my dad Joe Patrick who has been my best friend and by my side for every project of my entrepreneurship life. But he also taught me to be kind, loving and the value of strength in silence. My mother taught me what unconditional love is and I know this because I was not a good kid! And Joel Hensel who is my right hand at WAYGFT, he’s stood by me when no one else would and he has an amazing ability to practice empathy with everyone.

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

I traveled the US a lot for work when I was younger. No one really felt as comfortable and at “home” as Midland. I especially love being in Sanford. We’re a small community out here but it’s a very large group of people that support each other. There are a ton of things to do or be a part of. We even had a lake once upon a time.

Church, volunteer organizations: I am with One Church in Midland. I have volunteered with many groups and organizations, mostly for Sanford. I serve on the Friends of The Pere Marquette Rail Trail board, helping make improvements to our beloved Rail Trail.

Describe a day on the job for you. Every day on the job looks different. I can often be found on my phone doing what’s best described as problem solving. Otherwise, it is typically showings and listing appointments. I also offer free buyer and seller consultations, so I spend a lot of time teaching the buying and selling process to clients up front- makes for a smoother experience for them. I work from home as much as possible- I spend a lot of time analyzing pricing, marketing, coordinating transactions and answering questions.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

I am a goal gal, so I LOVE helping people accomplish their goals- in my role, I get to do this in many ways, whether it is helping someone achieve home ownership or a commercial building for their business. Commercial is a very small part of my business, but I have had the pleasure of helping local small businesses acquire their properties or buildings- Cozy Cats Cafe, LaCannaville and Salt Springs Ice Cream in Sanford, and HandiCan Dumpster Rentals in Midland, to name a few. It has been awesome to see them from the start, and watch them all build, transform and be successful! I always love to watch people glow up and be their cheerleader- sometimes that looks like a first-time home buyer, or someone upgrading their home or even a senior downsizing and getting into a fairly maintenance free condo. I love getting the job done for my clients!

Who are some role models that you look up to?

Teresa Quintana , 38 Century 21

We have some stellar role models in Midland County, and I tend to look up to people who stay strong through tough stuff!

This year, I have 3 that come to mind. Of course, Dolores Porte is the GOAT of role models for me. She is the President of the Village Council of Sanford and we have worked together in the past in Dam Failure recovery. She has taught me a lot about leadership and communication.

My husband, Brett Fales. He is incredibly hard working and smart. He is the newly elected Lincoln Township Supervisor and he is employed with Three Rivers Corporation, and I admire his attention to detail, his calm disposition and his ability to problem solve. The guy has a work ethic that is unmatched and he is incredibly disciplined.

Erin Patrice of the Breaking Bread Village- Again, I love people who are authentic and true to themselves. I deeply admire her open mindedness and her ability to host difficult conversations in our community. It is much needed in our current political climate, and I love seeing a strong woman step up to the plate to facilitate that role- AGAIN- even when it’s hard, even when it’s unpopular. Erin is a true blessing to our community!

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

My favorite part is knowing it like the back of my handbeing familiar with an area is extremely useful in my line of work.

I really do have a passion for the area in general. Having lived in several places across the United States, there is no other place I would choose to raise my family. I love our history, I love the small town feel and going to the grocery store and always seeing someone I know. Of course I am also grateful we have a fairly steady real estate market.

Children: Brendan, 15, Ella, 12, Liam, 7, and Landon, 3.

Hobbies:

Attending my children’s various sporting events, golfing, watching Detroit Lions and University of Michigan football and seeing my favorite stand-up comedians live.

Church, volunteer organizations: Attend Christian Celebration Center, member of the board of directors for MCFOAR (Midland Community Former Offenders Advocacy & Rehabilitation), and MyPros Member.

Describe a day on the job for you. A typical day on the job for me always starts with a checklist of what I want to accomplish. That list

usually grows as the day goes on, but I start by touching any existing loan in process and make sure I have the proper documents needed from the clients, appraisals ordered, interest rates locked in, any questions answered, and moving in the right direction to meet the client’s anticipated closing date.

Then I shift focus to any new prospects who need to start their pre-approval, have questions on loan programs or processes, or need any information from me. At the same time I am updating my realtors and referral partners with any pertinent information regarding that client so they can begin their home search confidently.

As loans get through the various milestones throughout the day I am updating all parties and any loans that are clear to close so we can schedule those with the title company, reaching out for any documentation or conditions needed for approval, finalizing home insurance policies, etc.

Every day starts with a plan but there are many ebbs and flows, phone calls, and moving parts that require immediate attention, so I always have to be prepared for anything. The job can involve a lot of problem solving and creativity to keep the loan process moving forward for the clients, as well as meet the many mortgage regulations that exist in our industry.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

The best thing about working in my industry is that I am able to directly help families get into homes of their own, many for the first time. Seeing folks who never thought it was possible to buy a home get into one perhaps using down payment assistance, or seeing kids who are getting their own bedrooms or yards or basements to run around in for the first time, is all very rewarding. I also really get to see firsthand the lifecycle of a

home that someone put 30 years of love and care into and raised their family in, then being passed to a new young family ready to take the reins and make their own memories in for the next 30 years.

I have been lucky enough to help hundreds of families in our area get into new homes in the past few years, which is pretty amazing when I take a moment to think the impact of that.

Who are some role models that you look up to?

My answer to this question will never change - My dad, Mark Schalk, is probably the only man and role model who I really look up to. I have never met a man with more integrity, selflessness, and love for his family than my dad. I am not sure if he has ever actually told someone in need that he couldn’t help, no matter how busy his own life and schedule is. It also helps that he seems to know how to do almost everything from carpentry to car repairs. To be honest, I have never even heard a single curse word come out of his mouth. I don’t try to compare myself to other men, rather I try to compare myself to who I was yesterday and always be improving. However, if my character could be thought of anywhere close to my father’s, then I know will have done a pretty good job in what matters in life and how I made people feel.

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

I grew up in Midland, went to Siebert Elementary, Jefferson Middle School, Dow High, and played baseball at Northwood University. I am Midland, to the core, so to be able to help grow our community, help people move to our town, or improve their homes, it’s a very cool thing to see. There are so many great young professionals, and new entrepreneurs in our town, it’s awesome to see what’s happening, and what is to come in our community. I am not sure there is a better town, with more activities and support to work and raise a family in.

Growing up, I admired him not only for his wisdom and kindness but also for his incredible work ethic. He showed me what it meant to be truly dedicated to something and how that dedication could shape the course of one’s life. His hard work and commitment to his job were not just about earning a paycheck but about creating a sense of purpose and pride in everything he did.

From an early age, I admired my grandpa’s gift of gab. Beverly’s influence shaped my career path in Human Resources, even if she doesn’t realize the extent of her impact.

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

passion for music and creative arts. As a music producer since 2003, I’ve worked on numerous local projects in audio, video, and graphic media. Describe a day on the job for you.

I am grateful that every day looks a little bit different for me! I balance 5 jobs, so each down comes with new responsibilities, and with each job comes different roles. At Shelterhouse and my practice, I manage a caseload of clients while balancing admin responsibilities. I also offer supervision throughout each day, as I supervise my staff and outside professionals in the field of social work. I appreciate the flexibility and various responsibil-

Who are some role models that you look up to?

Many of my professional role models are in the play therapy arena- including Terry Kottman and Paris Goodyear-Brown. I have been so fortunate to work with both of them on various things, and I am so blessed to learn from them and call them my friends. They have done so much for the play therapy community and continue to support the research, training, and growth of the play therapy field. However, if I had to choose someone outside of play therapy, my parents have played such a critical role in who I am today. My mom has such a giving and supportive spirit that has been influential in my career and my dad has drive for anything and everything he does, self-discipline and persistence that I model in my day-to-day life personally and professionally. I like to think that I have the best qualities of each of them.

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

I truly appreciate how supportive this community has been to me! I love being involved in so many things and Midland has really provided me the opportunity to be involved and grow personally and professionally.

30 Under 40: Kim Bolesky HOSPITALITY

Residence:

Midland

Employer: Hampton Inn, Midland

Spouse: Joel Finney

Hobbies:

Bowling, reading, watching baseball

Church, volunteer organizations:

I coach Girls Varsity Bowling at Bullock Creek High School

Describe a day on the job for you. I book group blocks, corporate rates, and meeting rooms for the Hampton Inn in Midland, and the Hampton Inn and Suites, Okemos, so every day is a little bit different! Most days, I am on the phone, emailing, or meeting with current guests, future guests, and prospect guests. I give tours of our property to the public; I do a lot of research in the Midland and Okemos markets on what events are happening and try to convince the guests of these

events to stay with us. I also attend networking events with the Midland Business Alliance, MyPros, and the Lansing CVB. No day is ever exactly the same; In any one day, I could be working with a sports team, a wedding, a 90th birthday party, and a construction company.

What is the best thing about working in your industry?

I have the opportunity to meet with anyone and everyone from all over the world. I have been able to chat with and provide accommodations for people from literally every corner of the globe — It is really a great, humbling experience to meet and talk to people from all walks of life.

Who are some role models that you look up to?

Two of my biggest role models are honestly my dad, Del Bolesky, and my grandma, Janice Wortman. They both have shown me throughout my life how important hard work is, and how important it is to show up and do the best you can. My dad is a person that finds conversation easy with literally anyone, and in my job that is a skill that I have had to develop over the past few years. My grandma was the type of person that would never make excuses, and she is also the reason that I work in the hotel industry. She would show up, do what needed to be done, and do it at the highest possible level that she could. I was lucky to grow up watching them!

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area?

My favorite part about working in Midland is the sense of community that there is. No matter what you’re into, in my case bowling and hotels, there is a level of support that your friends and colleagues provide for you that is unmatched. The hotel community is really a great place — while we are in an industry where we could be considered competitors, we all want to see each other, and Midland, succeed and be the best place that it can possibly be!
