Toys for Tots program seeking donations Colin Merry

The Benzie County Toys for Tots program is seeking donations for the Christmas Store to help families provide gifts for their children. Marilou Schlotterbeck, coordinator of the program, said toy collection boxes also have been scattered at businesses throughout the county. The Toy Trolley also will still be taking place at the Beulah A. Papano’s Pizza from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 2, but it will be a drive-up event this year. People who want to donate toys can drive up, drop them off and receive a coupon for breadsticks. The Toys for Tots Holiday Store will be held on Dec. 10, 11 and 12 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Frankfort. Like in past years, families are encouraged to apply ahead of time, this year through the Benzie Area Christian Neighbors website at benziebacn.org. Families are asked to apply at BACN’s website before Dec. 4, but Schlotterbeck said she might still be able help after that cutoff, and to call her at (231) 871-0875 or contact BACN. Once a family applies, they
will receive word on when their appointment will be on the three shopping days. Families are asked not to bring children to the Christmas Store. Families do not have to be clients of BACN to apply. Shopping days will be a bit different this year. There will be no lines inside the church; parents will have to wait outside of the church until they are brought in. There will only be six people allowed in to shop at a time, one per family, with six more being brought in when the six previous shoppers are finished. Shoppers will be asked to wear a mask and store staff will supply gloves. “We want it to be a pleasant and safe experience,” Schlotterbeck said. Like usual, parent will have a vast array of toys to chose from for many age groups; everything from stuffed animals and action figures to board games and books. The Holiday Store often has a large selection of bicycles as well. In the past, there have been items for older children, as well, including electronics and personal hygiene products. Schlotterbeck said she and Toys for Tots officials expect to see more families in need this

‘Shop local’ is more important than ever Rick Coates Guest Columnist Nov. 28 is Small Business Saturday, an event launched 10 years ago by American Express to encourage shoppers to support local brick and mortar shops. Certainly, we want you support Small Business Saturday and purchase your Christmas/holiday gifts from businesses in Benzie and Manistee counties. While this promotion is important and shines the spotlight on supporting local businesses, it begs the question “Shouldn’t we be shinning the spotlight on local businesses every day?” The answer is yes! COVID-19 has challenged all of us, especially small businesses, and their employees. As we go into this winter season coronavirus numbers are rising, and the flu season is also upon us. Several of our communitybased holiday events that bring shoppers to town have been cancelled. We cannot let our small shops, restaurants and pubs become canceled too. Between March 1 and Nov. 1, 2020, over 170,000 small businesses have closed across the country. Most of those closures have been attributed to COVID-19. In Benzie County, we were fortunate that a strong summer tourism season saved many of our small businesses from shuttering. While the winter season attracts tourists, it will
not rival summer. So, it is on our shoulders to support our local businesses, not just on Small Business Saturday but every day. The Benzie Area Chamber wants to encourage you to

Jaquish said she hopes everyone takes the time to enjoy the 2020 Sparkle in the Park because with the COVID-19 pandemic it is a good way to get everyone in the holiday mood in these difficult times.

Holiday Recipes Spiced Cranberry Sauce/Jam Submitted by Cathy Bodell, Benzonia months in refrigerator. Can also be frozen for up to one year. Makes a large amount INGREDIENTS 2 - 12 oz. bags fresh cranberries (Michigan cranberries are preferred) 1 cup 100% no sugar added cranberry juice (if cranberry juice is not available, 100% apple juice can be substituted) 1/2 cup 100% pure Michigan maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons raw sugar (or white granulated sugar) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Cranberry sauce with Thanksgiving, Christmas dinner Jam on buttered toast – either smooth or partially whole consistency works A topping for cheesecake A gift - put either version (smooth or chunky) in small jars and give as Cranberry Jam Jam/topping for pancakes or waffles When any leftover turkey or thanksgiving recipes call for cranberry sauce
DIRECTIONS Simmer berries and juice in small saucepan until they pop. Mash berries with fork, if needed (leave some partially whole if you prefer chunky). Add rest of ingredients, except vanilla. Simmer until thick, stirring frequently (it will thicken even more when refrigerated). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let cool. Can be stored for up to 2
