EDWARDSVILLE — The historic Wildey Theatre is making the most of downtime caused by its temporary closure due to the coronavirus pandemic and booking super hot musical acts for its intimate stage. The Wildey’s Al Canal, manager for the last six years of The Wildey’s 10 since being reopened by the city of Edwardsville, is taking the closure — tentatively mandated by the state through April 30 — one step — and day — at a time. “We have a lot to tribute bands in the first couple months, but a lot of original bands following, and another half dozen shows that haven’t been announced yet,” Canal said. “When I first came to The Wildey, I was hesitant about booking tribute bands, but a lady came to me and said, ‘I really like tributes.’ I asked why. She said, ‘They play the songs as I remember them.’ “That was a good point,” he said. “A lot of times the original bands still play those songs people want to hear, but not like on their albums, or there’s so many member changes, it’s not like the original band.”

“I’m so proud of the amazing bands we have in this 326-seat theater,” he noted. In 2019, the enigmatic leader and The Wildey Theatre won a Local Legends award from the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau and in 2018 won with the most votes in The Telegraph/ The Intelligencer’s Best of the Best of Riverbend/ Madison County. Canal has most of The Wildey’s March and April concerts rescheduled, including backup dates for those rescheduled shows. Newly scheduled shows include musicians from around the world, including Canada and the U.K. “International acts are more difficult to do, but we are,” he said. Several shows are already rescheduled and The Wildey is still waiting for some rescheduled dates. “The acts had to figure out their schedule, whether they were planning to be in Chicago, then come here, then to Memphis, and that we and other cities have an date open,” Canal said of the detail that goes into rescheduling shows. “Some may not be here until early 2021. “The thing is, I want to make sure all of our patrons know that they can be confident in any ticket purchase,” he said.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, April 23, 2020 • 5 “They will have ample time to see if they can make a new date,” he explained, “so they don’t have to decide immediately if they can make it or not, for a future rescheduled show.” The first big show rescheduled since the World Health Organization declared the new coronavirus a pandemic, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced temporary closures of bars, restaurants and nonessential businesses, is Hotel California - The Original Eagles Tribute, scheduled for Saturday, May 23. “They are from Canada, so it could be rescheduled, depending on what happens,” Canal said. “But they come every year.” Another thing, Canal is scheduling a back-up date for every show, whether it’s a rescheduled act or a new booking. And, if that show, or any show for that matter, is postponed patrons have plenty of time to decide if they want to keep tickets already purchased for a new date or get a full refund. “Everything through mid-May is rescheduled, and we may have to reschedule some again, depending on the state and what officials say,” Canal explained. “We just have to go day by day, the same as everybody else. “A lot of different venues are saying ticket holders have to decide in a week or two, but we are definitely giving more time than that. If you can’t make it, you get a full refund. We value our patrons and want to make sure they are happy

and confident about a ticket purchase and about either coming to a show or not. But they can feel good about holding on to a ticket — to see if they can make a new date.” Canal also is asking all Wildey patrons for a favor. “When The Wildey opens again and things are back up and running, please, please, please give ample time to go to the local restaurants beforehand, to eat and drink there, because they’ve been hurting,” he said. “When able to go to movies and shows, make a whole night of it, pop into some of the shops, walk up and down Main Street, even if a shop is not open, so you can make plans to come back.” Canal will be adding a lot of movies in the coming month or so, once the COVID-19 precautions are lifted. He also is scheduling several local bands at low ticket costs. “The local bands have been hurting, haven’t been able to play,” he said. “As people get used to going back out, we are keeping low ticket prices. “People say, ‘Things will be different,’ but things are always different, nothing stays the same,” he noted. “Of course things will be different, but we will all do well, we always do.” During this time, rescheduling and rearranging shows has involved a lot work, but it’s totally worth it to Canal. “I love The Wildey Theatre so much,” he said. “During a show, when I go in and look at the audience and see 326 people smiling, clapping, and maybe moving to music, I look out and think to myself, ‘I have a little something to do with this.’ “It’s great gratification to know that.” With Canal’s guidance, The Wildey has become a true entertainment destination. In addition to Illinois and Missouri, visitors have come to The Wildey from 34 different states, as well as from Canada, U.K. and Germany, specifically to come to a show at the venue. “I have local restaurants, bars and retailers tell me they always know when we’re having a show, because they always see business increase on those nights,” Canal recalled. “Local hotels tell me they have people come in to stay at their hotel for shows, weddings, receptions. “One of my goals was to become a true beacon for the community and the city of Edwardsville,” he said. “When I first got here, I thought this place could easily became a beacon for the community and it truly has, not only for the community but for others from all over coming to spend time and money at the local places. “That’s one of the things I wanted to accomplish when I came here. I’m proud of that,” he said. “I couldn’t have done this without my amazing staff, the community with a capital C and surrounding Madison County, the mayor, the administration, the clerk’s

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, April 23, 2020 • 7 office.” When Canal first started managing The Wildey, only 5% of patrons came from Missouri, but now there’s an average of 20% coming from across the river. Included in Canal’s future plans, even more community events at The Wildey. “We are forming a partnership to become the official home of Opera Edwardsville, I’m really excited about that,” he said. Already, The Wildey has opened up on the night of Edwardsville’s Halloween Parade, organized by the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce. “Before I got here, it was closed,” he noted. “Now the theater lobby opens so all the people with kids can use the bathroom, instead of having to go to restaurants and bars and taking kids through there.” The Wildey Theatre also gives away 1,000 bags of popcorn during before the Halloween Parade starts. For the annual Veterans Parade in November, The Wildey gives away 1,200 American flags. “To wave to these heroes walking the parade route,” he said. During Edwardsville District 7’s homecoming and prom seasons, students will find a shout out of congratulations on the marquee at The Wildey, where the lobby is open before both events so people can take photographs inside. “It’s little things like that, it’s important,” Canal said. “I firmly believe that if you want the community to support you, you have to support the community.” To that end, Canal also described ways in which The Wildey Theatre is making things more convenient for patrons and supporters. “First of all, we are re-doing The Wildey ticket office and business office,” he said. The remodeling of those areas will take place the next couple of months, with gutting of those existing areas starting in the next couple of weeks. “There will be a really nice area for ticket buying, access to our rental space upstairs for banquets, receptions, showers,” Canal said. “We also have a small area, when we don’t have shows, for local nonprofits to be able to host eight to ten people, to use for a small meeting space, at no charge,” he explained. “That’s us giving back to the community because there are a lot of nonprofits in the Edwardsville area. We want to make that space available for them. “I’m so excited about that whole area being re-done, it will be so much more convenient for patrons.” Canal said he’s also excited about recently adding a co-manager, Randi Van Wie. “I’m so happy about that, she’s coming on board,” he said. “This will allow The Wildey to do even bigger and better things in the upcoming years. We’ve been here almost ten years, and this allows us to progress into the next ten years. I’m very excited about that, too.’

St. Louis-based Dogs of Society - Ultimate Elton Rock Tribute on stage at the historic Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville. Dogs of Society plays spot-on classic rock from the ‘70s and by Elton John in a live show, featuring massive hits, including “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Crocodile Rock” and deeper cuts, such as “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” “Madman Across the Water,” “All the Girls Love Alice,” “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” and many more. The Wildey Theatre’s upcoming concerts: • Hotel California - The Original Eagles Tribute, Saturday, May 23 • Local favorite Memories of Elvis with Steve Davis, Thursday, June 4 “People love this show, love Steve Davis,” The Wildey’s Al Canal, general manager, said. • Gypsy - 50th Anniversary of the Debut Double Album Show, Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, returning to The Wildey though the band did a “final farewell retirement show” at The Wildey a few years ago, Canal noted. “I managed to talk them into coming back last year to raise money for Special Olympics organized by the Edwardsville Police Department,” he explained. “Gypsy enjoyed it and they were so good at raising the money, they’re coming back and doing it again.” • A Tribute to the Women of Country Music with Vicki Rolens, Friday, June 12 “We had an Alan Jackson tribute a couple months ago, she opened up, and, man, she almost stole the show,” Canal recalled. “She was so good, singing Patsy Cline to Carrie Underwood, a bunch of female country artists. If you like country music and hearing amazing female vocalists from the era, this is the show you should come to.“ • An Evening with John Waite - Unplugged, Saturday, June 20 • Heartsfield, Saturday, June 27 “These guys are huge, from the Chicago area,” Canal noted. “They play nationally, have twelve albums and pioneered the southern rock-country music genre. They get up there and play over two hours, great guitar playing.” • Dueling Pianos - Family Fun Edition, 2 p.m., Sunday, June 28 (Originally scheduled in March, then rescheduled for the first weekend in May — tickets already purchased valid for June date; if unable to attend, can get a full refund.) “We did this during the holidays, it sold out, people loved it, families and kids,” Canal said. “There’s a lot of fun things going on for this show.” • The Artimus Pyle Band - A night of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pyle is a longtime and former drummer with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thursday, July 9 “Amazingly great. He’s a former Marine, too, so proud of his service,” Canal said of the Skynyrd member who survived the plane crash that took the life of half of his band at the time. “If you’re a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, you really got to watch this show. He’s surrounded himself with topnotch musicians.” • The Arena Rock Show, Saturday, July 11 “This show pays homage to arena rock greats — Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses,” Canal described. “They do costume changes, re-enact MTV videos from back when MTV actually played music, special effects, videos. It’s a multi-media concert, a monster of a show, in the intimate 326-seat Wildey Theatre.” • Anthology, a tribute to The Allman Brothers Band, July, featuring Mama’s Pride co-founding member Danny Liston and original Pride members Dickie Steltenpohl, Tom Deman, and other great local musicians, Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18 “They’ll do a whole career of catalogue of the Allman Brothers,” Canal said. “This show with these guys is so popular, we’re doing two nights.” • Thunderstruck: Celebrating 40 years of “Back in Black,” Thursday, July 23 “Thunderstruck always fills the house,” Canal said about the AC/DC tribute out of Louisville, Kentucky. “They are easily the premiere AC/DC tribute band in the country, totally recreating a concert. These guys are top notch.” Several original bands will have dates the rest of the year, including: • Country legend John Conlee, who sings “Rose Colored Glasses,” 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23 • Wishbone Ash: 50 Years Touring - 101st Release North America 2020, for two nights, Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20 • Martin Barre Performs Classic Jethro Tull, for two nights, former Jethro Tull guitarist with a full topnotch band and vocalist who perform “Aqualung,” “Locomotive Breath” and many other Tull favorites, Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3 “Martin is Jethro Tull,” Canal said. “The man is amazing. When he’s on stage it’s like he’s 22.” • An Evening with Firefall, Friday, Oct. 23 • Ozark Mountain Daredevils, annual two nights of performance, Saturday, Dec. 26, and Sunday, Dec. 27

How to design your dream custom-built home

(MS) — There are many advantages to designing your own home. Gone are the builder-basic styles, layouts that don’t work for your family and exteriors you can’t tell apart from your neighbors’. To help with your planning, check out these tips. Find the right property. There are no limits to what you can create with a custombuilt home, but the size and quality of your lot do impose restrictions. While you don’t need to have everything decided when you purchase the property, make sure you have a general idea of what you need — your architect can help with this. Also, double check zoning laws, so you don’t wind up not being able to build your dream threestory home on a residential street that only allows bungalows. Consider your lifestyle. What kind of lifestyle do you want to live? What’s important to you? From bigger elements like smart home automation and sustainability to smaller considerations like storage and organization, think of these things when designing the layout and built-in elements. For example, if you hate shoveling, now is the opportunity to make sure you have the shortest driveway possible. Build for the future. Your needs and wants right now are at the top of your mind,

but a custom home is a significant investment in time, money and energy. It’s also likely you want this to be your forever home, so it’s a smart idea to build for tomorrow. Think about how your family will evolve and what your future needs will be. Consider building materials that are designed to stand the test of time, like insulated concrete forms (ICFs) from Nudura. This alternative to wood framing is a greener option and offers disaster resilience against high winds and fire. The superior insulation also means more comfortable, uniform indoor temperatures and less money spent on heating and cooling your home. Avoid the fantasy trap. This is your dream home, so it’s okay to indulge on that outdoor fireplace or luxury bathroom tiles that you’ve been envisioning. But to keep your budget in check, focus on the priorities and items that will give you the best value for your dollar. Invest in features that will improve your everyday living and boost your property value, like energy-efficient construction or a finished basement. Find more information about designing your new home with insulated concrete forms at nudura.com.

Custom home-buying tips for first timers

(MS) — Even considering being able to design your own custom home is an exciting prospect. Whether you’re ready to take the plunge or just exploring your options, here are tips to keep in mind. Know what you’re signing up for. Building a custom home is a significant undertaking and a major life decision. It’s a big commitment in terms of time, money and energy. While this shouldn’t scare you away from your dream home, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the kids or busy caring for an ailing parent, it may be best to start this later. Hire the right professionals. You may be a DIY pro, but this isn’t a project you

want to take on yourself, even partly. Key professionals you’ll need to work with include an architect, plumber, electrician and more. Consider also working with a designer who can help with the interiors to make sure the space is as functional as it is beautiful. Do your research to find quality pros — this isn’t the time to skimp on labor. Think about furniture layout early. While it may seem a bit premature to start decorating your living room before the foundation is laid, knowing how you’ll want to use and lay out each room can help you during the building and design process. For example, you can save time and money down the line when

you know from the get-go you’ll want a window seat and two large couches to face the fireplace. Know where to save and spend. Costs can quickly add up, so it’s important for you to decide early on what matters most to you, and what’s worth investing in. You can always upgrade your flooring or cabinetry, but you can never change the foundation. Build your home to last longer and perform better with innovative building materials like insulated custom forms (ICFs) from Nudura. This alternative to wood framing can withstand fire and high winds and provides superior insulation, leading to significant savings on your energy bills year after year.

Prepare for the unexpected. Building a new home is a process, and you can minimize stress by embracing that it will be unpredictable and can change throughout the journey. Plan for things like weather delays and higher costs. The unexpected can also lead to positive changes in your plans. For example, you might come across a new flooring material that’s more eco-friendly, or a smart home automation system might hit the market and you’ll want to integrate it into the design. Be flexible. Find more information about building your new home with insulated concrete forms at nudura.com.

5 outdoor projects that add value

Exterior renovations can enhance the appearance of a property and make it more enjoyable for homeowners. Certain renovations have the potential to add value to a home, while others may do the opposite. Learning which one have the largest return on investment can help homeowners select features that will have the most positive impact. Curb appeal goes a long way toward attracting potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, first impressions of a property have a strong influence on buyers. Landscaping and external features can do much to influence such impressions. . • Lawn care program: Investing in a lawn care program that consists of fertilizer and weed control application and can be transferred over to a subsequent home owner is an attractive feature. NAR says such a care program can recover $1,000 in value of the $330 average cost, or a 303 percent ROI. • Low-maintenance lifestyle: When choosing materials for projects, those that offer low-maintenance benefits can be preferential. These include low-maintenance patio materials, composite decking, vinyl fencing, and inorganic mulched beds.

• Fire pit: A fire pit can be used for much of the year. In the spring and summer, the firepit is a great place to congregate to roast marshmallows or sip wine and gaze into the fire. In the fall, the fire pit can make for a cozy retreat. A fire pit that has a gas burner is low-maintenance, and the National Association of Landscape Professionals says that most can recoup about $4,000 of their $6,000 average price tag. • Softscaping: Hardscaping refers to structures like outdoor kitchens or decks. Softscaping involves the living elements of the landscape. Hiring a landscape designer to install trees, shrubs, natural edging, and rock elements can do wonders toward improving the look and value of a home. • Pool or water feature: In certain markets, particularly hot climates, a pool or another water feature is a must-have. However, in other areas where outdoor time is limited, a pool or water feature can actually lower the value of a home. Speaking with a real estate professional can give homeowners an idea of how a pool will fare in a given neighborhood. Outdoor improvements can improve the marketability of a home, as well as enhance its appearance and function.

have a good recipe for these or other types of fish, let me know. 1 small clove garlic, smashed Grilled Salmon and Pineapple with Avocado Dressing 1/2 avocado, diced 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Combine the lemon juice, basil, chives, olive oil, tarragon, 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh basil, plus sprigs, for garnish anchovy paste (if using), salt, pepper, garlic and avocado in a 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives food processor. Add two tablespoons of water and process until 1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon, plus some sprigs, for garsmooth. Cover the dressing and let stand for at least 15 minutes nish and up to one hour for the flavors to blend. 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants, to chef 4 4-ounce skinless salmon fillets, each about 1-inch thick conversations, new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact 4 1/2-inch-thick round slices (rings) of pineapple, preferably her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas, questions or fresh (I used canned) suggestions. Place a grill pan over medium-high heat or preheat a gas or charcoal grill. Whisk the oil, chopped basil, chives, chopped tarragon, salt and pepper in a small bowl to blend. Brush the salmon and pineapple slices with the herb mixture. Cook the salmon until barely cooked through and still pink inside, about 4 minutes per side. Cook the pineapple until slightly charred, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer 1 pineapple slice to each plate and arrange a piece of salmon slightly overlapping it. Spoon 2 tablespoons of the avocado dressing over each piece of fish. Garnish with basil and tarragon sprigs and serve. People In Virtual Places Madison County residents have seen a significant social change in recent weeks with phrases such as “social distancing” and “shelter-in-place” quickly becoming the cultural language of the time. Dominating the news and social media, terms and phrases that have been around for years are taking on new meanings and being used in a much wider context than ever before amid the

current global health crisis due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19.) The repetition of the now-common and familiar terms and phrases has also become evident in local business signage, message boards and other posted notices, lending to additional evidence of a new vocabulary. Take a look at some of the signs people in different places have displayed.

Homage to a legend: Kirk Douglas 1916-2020

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

When Kirk Douglas died Feb. 5 this year, I was flat on my back in a local hospital dealing with a painful and unexpected infection that I’m happy to have put well behind me by this time. As it happens, with hospitals plainly in each of our thoughts these days, my prior situation reminds me that all news you can get when you’re laid up is welcome news. But that doesn’t mean it’s always happy news. I’m fascinated by Douglas’ life and career, mostly for how much it echoed the changing of times in his industry — oh, that Hollywood dream! But, also, for his longevity. Douglas was 103 years old when he passed away and he was a testament to a great many ideals, many liberal, that we’re still fighting for today. For me, as a movie critic and fan, I have an even greater appreciation for efforts at thwarting McCarthyism in the 1950s. Hiring Dalton Trumbo to write the screenplay for “Spartacus” was the ultimate thumb-to-thenose toward the era’s censorship. I know, maybe, two people whose recom-

mendation of a title would steer me to a movie and one of them is my dad. He didn’t hesitate for even a second when we were reminiscing about “ol’ Kirk.” “Dad, what’s your favorite Kirk Douglas movie?” “’Detective Story,’” he said. I figured “Spartacus” was too pedestrian for Dad, even though it’ll be the star’s best remembered role. I loved his portrayal of Vincent van Gogh in “Lust for Life” and his lovable rogue in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” But I’d teed it up perfectly. I just knew Dad was going to say “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.” How do you not pick his Doc Holliday, the snarky, consumptive dentist? But nope, not a Western. “Detective Story.” Well played, Dad. The DVD arrived last Friday. Active politically well into his ’90s, Douglas was a vocal proponent for Democratic concepts and many freedoms that we in America take for granted. He was a champion for the Israeli state and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy

MOVIE REVIEW continued from Page 23

Carter for his investment therein. One of his primary charitable endeavors was to support the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. He and wife, Anne Buydens, donated $40 million over many years to its endowment in support of long-term care for movie industry professionals. As COVID-19 runs rampant among our seniors who live in some of our nation’s nursing homes, could there be a more pressing time to be reminded how vital elder care is to our national heritage? When a massive stroke failed to kill Douglas in 1996, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rectified an error long in development: Douglas was finally awarded an honorary Oscar. He’d received three competitive nominations for Best Actor nearly one half-century earlier. I say, “Thank you,” to Kirk Douglas, along with these words: “For the rest of us, cinema will eventually return. We’ll get through this.” As far as a review, it seems only fitting that I write a paragraph for you about my favorite Kirk Douglas film.

It’s a 1952 peach about the Golden Age of Hollywood called “The Bad and the Beautiful.” This film plot involves a producer (Walter Pidgeon) who gathers together an Oscar-winning director (Barry Sullivan), an A-list leading lady (Lana Turner), and a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist/screenwriter (Dick Powell) to convince them to join a new film project led by disgraced studio head James Shields (Douglas). All three turn him down cold. Shields was the driving force behind the four achieving massive stardom and financial success, but at great expense to each of their dignity. He’d stolen ideas, taken credit from others, dumped his leading lady after her star-making turn and gotten his screenwriter’s wife (Gloria Grahame, an Oscar winner for the film) killed. The story is told almost exclusively in lush black-and-white flashbacks. It may be a melodrama, and incredibly melodramatic in its final scene, but nothing gets the creative juices flowing in even fictional Hollywood, like, a great project or the rebirth of dismissed talent. It is my favorite Douglas vehicle, but, remember, I hadn’t seen “Detective Story” yet.
