‘Battle Between’ exhibition opening at Edwardsville art gallery By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Spatial character of architectural characteristics has reach and inten-
sity in the latest solo exhibit coming to Good Weather Gallery. “My work deals with the investigation of space,” said St.
Louis-based artist Cory Sellers in his artist statement regarding “Battle Between” opening at the Edwardsville art gallery Saturday, Feb. 27.
“I am greatly interested in pictorial drama and illusionism within that space,” he explained. “Certain features get manipulated or exaggerated. This continues until I feel the picture has developed its own characteristics reminding myself the finished product does not have to look like the initial intention.”

Essentials for a DIY spa bathroom
Relaxing at a spa each week may be a luxury reserved for celebrities and socialites. For many people, a day spa is a treat enjoyed on special occasions or while on vacation. However, home bathrooms can be designed to provide the same types of amenities offered at day spas right in the comfort of one’s home. The American Psychological Association says that money, work and the future of the country are particularly strong stressors today. Eighty percent of workers feel stress on the job and learning how to manage stress is a top concern, according to the American Institute of Stress. Creating a Zenlike retreat at home can help alleviate stress and improve health. Homeowners whose renovation plans include turning a bathroom into a spa oasis will need to choose which features they desire most. These suggestions can spur on more ideas to create the ideal retreat.
• Soaker bathtub: There’s something to be said about a luxurious soak in a tub. Tubs come in different sizes and shapes, like the highly recognizable clawfoot tub and other freestanding units. These types of tubs, as well as corner tubs, can offer deep-seated luxury by way of a relaxing and restorative soak. Pair with scented bath bombs or salts for a true spa experience. • Steam shower: Steam showers are self-enclosed units that feature generators that deliver steam through steam heads. The steam fills the space and can help a person unwind before a refreshing shower or bath. According to the retailer Modern Bathroom®, modern steam showers come with digital controls, which makes it easy for users to activate the shower, adjust the length of time that the shower will operate and adjust temperature controls. Extra features like music, mood lighting and aromatherapy can be included as well. • Heated floors: Heated floors provide the utmost in com-
fort when stepping out of the bath or shower. They can warm the room and make using the space more comfortable in cold weather. • Vessel sinks: A vessel sink typically features a bowl or basin that looks like it was placed on top of the vanity. Vessel sinks can elevate the ambiance in spa bathrooms. • Plush towels and robes: In addition to fixtures and other functional components of the bath, linens are key. Soft-spun Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels and robes are a must-have luxury for the full spa experience. • Comfortable seat: A bench or chair nestled by a bathroom window is the perfect spot for pedicures or catching up on some light reading. • Natural light: Skylights or privacy-ensuring windows are a must to create a relaxing space close to nature. A spa bathroom at home is within reach. With a few touches, any bathroom can be transformed into a luxurious oasis.

DIY strategies to deep-clean carpeting
What’s underfoot in a home can go a long way toward making residences comfortable and aesthetically appealing. A study of home buyer preferences using data from the National Association of Realtors® found that 54 percent of home buyers were willing to pay more for a home with hardwood flooring. But that doesn’t mean that carpeting doesn’t still have its devotees. In 2019, the real estate firm Opendoor installed nearly one million yards of carpeting in its homes. Houzz reports that, in 2018, 17 percent of renovating homeowners purchased carpets and 50 percent purchased indoor rugs. Carpeting and rugs can offset some of the shortcomings of hardwood, providing a softer texture that makes for a better landing spot for active young children. However, carpets will require more maintenance than hardwood floors. Learning how to deep clean carpets can help homeowners, as vacuuming is not enough to keep carpets in top form. Spot clean stains Stores sell a bevy of carpet cleaning solutions. When applying such solutions, do so in an inconspicuous area of the room to
ensure colorfastness of the carpet and that the solution does not adversely affect the fibers. If the spot is clean and the carpet is not adversely affected, you can then apply the solution to more visible areas. Homeowners who prefer all-natural cleaning solutions rather than chemicals can use a solution of white vinegar, baking soda and salt to make a safe cleanser, according to The Spruce. Soak the stain, use a scrub brush to work in the cleanser and then blot up the liquid with a clean cloth. According to the lifestyle resource First for Women, club soda also works as a cleanser when it is sprayed on a stain. Deep cleaning Carpets periodically need to be revitalized, and that can be accomplished with a specialized cleaning machine. Many are available for purchase (a good investment for homeowners with kids and/or pets), while others can be rented as needed. Remove all of the furniture from a room and vacuum to clean dust, dander and any other debris. Address any darker stains first by pretreating with a cleaning solution. Let sit for around 20 minutes. While waiting, learn how to operate the machine, fill it and

clean out the soiled water. Never allow the machine to oversaturate the carpet with water, as it can get into the padding and subfloor, causing problems like mold or wood damage. Spray the water-detergent solutions, and then pass the carpet cleaner over spots repeatedly until the carpet feels only slightly damp. DoItYourself.com advis-
es running the machine at the pace of one foot per second. Removing shoes when entering the home can keep carpets clean and reduce wear and tear. With frequent deep cleaning, carpets can maintain a like-new appearance for years.

The average timelines for popular renovation projects Home renovation projects are significant undertakings. Working with skilled and experienced contractors can ensure projects go smoothly and are completed promptly. Timing is a big consideration for homeowners as they begin renovating their homes, and the home improvement experts at HomeAdvisor note that the following are some general timelines for popular renovation projects. • Home addition: Short of a full-scale demolition and rebuild, home additions are the most time-consuming projects homeowners can undertake. HomeAdvisor notes that its survey of customers who recently completed home addition projects reported that the average time from start to finish was between three and four months. Certain variables, including the scale of the project and the local permits process, can extend the time it takes to complete a home addition. • Kitchen remodel: Scale is a big factor to consider when estimating the time it takes to complete various home improvement projects, and kitchen remodels are no exception. Some HomeAdvisor users reported projects taking as long as four months, though the average time reported was roughly six weeks. Projects that require major overhauls like rearranging the plumbing and moving walls will likely take longer than more cosmetic projects that are limited to replacing cabinets and countertops. • Bathroom remodel: More than 1,000 homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor reported that bathroom remodels took about 4.5 weeks from start to finish. Small-scale remodels that focus on painting the walls a fresh color and replacing existing tiles can be completed in less than two weeks. But like with kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels that involve replacing plumbing fixtures and removing
walls figure to take much longer than that. • Siding installation: HomeAdvisor users report that new siding projects take roughly two weeks from start to finish. That estimate is the same regardless of which materials homeowners are replacing and installing. • Replacement windows: Homeowners who want to replace all the windows in their home can expect such a project to take roughly three weeks. HomeAdvisor notes that such a timeline need not concern homeowners worried that they will be forced to brave the elements during the length of the project. Much of a contractors’ time during a window replacement project will be spent on upfront measuring and then ensuring a tight fit once the windows have been installed.

How to make cut flowers last longer What would Valentine’s Day be without a beautiful bouquet of flowers? In addition to chocolate, cards and dining out, flowers — particularly roses — are among the most popular gifts. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 58 percent of American men and 16 percent of American women were projected to buy flowers for Valentine’s Day 2016, spending a total of $1.9 billion. Similar spending is predicted for in 2017. Flowers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and aromas can make popular gifts this February. Prolonging the life of beautiful blooms is a priority for those who want their Valentine’s Day arrangements to endure for as long as possible. Florists and other experts differ with regard to the best methods of preserving flowers. Here are some ideas to try. Trim stems before immersing in water The natural emollients and sap in the stems of flowers may cause a film to form over the bottom of the stem after it is initially cut. This can reduce the flower’s uptake of water. To alleviate this, cut the stems once the flowers are home. A 45-degree angle allows for the absorption of the most water. You can recut them at each water change as well. Clean vases of bacteria Be sure that vases or other vessels you use to hold flowers are completely clean. Bacteria can cause the flowers to decompose prematurely. Use a diluted bleach-and-water solution to clean vases thoroughly between uses.
Watch flower placement Sunlight and heat may dry out the blooms. Prolong the life of flowers by placing them in the darkest, coolest area of the home. Treat the water To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source. Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin, and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days. Purchase immature blooms Although many desire an arrangement of all opened flowers, bouquets that have some closed buds or those that are just beginning to peek out will likely last longer than bouquets that have already bloomed. The flowers will continue to open and wilting flowers can be removed to make room for the others. Keeping Valentine’s Day flowers looking fresh and vibrant takes a few steps. By being diligent, that floral arrangement can last for several days.
Treat your sweet with a new kitchen or bath

Origins of the heart-shaped chocolate box Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heartshaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-in-your-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heart-shaped boxes seemed a natural progression, but the National Valentine
Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes. Various heart-shaped vessels, including “betrothal pendants” and silver boxes in the shape of hearts, were popularized a century earlier. There even were heart-shaped porcelain boxes as well as ones for sewing. Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. It was filled with delicious chocolates, and later could be saved as a keepsake to store special notes or other mementos, according to the North American Packaging Association. Furthermore, the gift fit with Victorian sensibilities in that it was demurely suggestive, NPR reports. Its introduction coincided perfectly with Valentine’s Day,
which also soared in popularity around the same time. Giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day also proved popular in North America. The American chocolate company Hershey’s introduced its Hershey’s Kisses in 1907, and in 1912 the Whitman’s Sampler arrived. In the 1920s, Russell Stover unveiled their own heart-shaped boxes, which today still include the “Red Foil Heart” and the “Secret Lace Heart.” Russell Stover has since become the No. 1 boxed chocolate brand in the United States. Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes holding 58 million pounds of chocolate are sold each year, reports the education resource SoftSchools. They have become a quintessential symbol of Valentine’s Day celebrations.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, February 11, 2021 • 21 fancy basil ribbons to dress it up if you are so inclined, though I have never taken that extra step. I do believe that the basil is a very important ingredient in the mix - the fresher, the better. To make the basil ribbons, you employ a French cooking technique known as chiffonade. How do you chiffonade? In this case, you start with basil leaves (but it can be done with other herbs, as well). Wash and dry the leaves, then stack them, roll them up like a cigar and cut into thin slices. So here it is. Your ticket to an easy-peasy starter that will have your guests thinking you are “molto gourmet.” BRUSCHETTA 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons garlic, minced small 8 medium-sized tomatoes, diced small 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/4 cup chopped basil (chiffonade, if desired) 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
1 (14.5 oz) French baguette or loaf of Italian bread, sliced into 1/2-inch slices Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add garlic and sauté about 1 minute, or until just barely starting to brown. Pour into a large mixing bowl. When oil mixture is cool, mix in parmesan, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Stir in basil, then add chopped tomatoes and toss gently until well mixed. Place sliced bread on a baking or cookie sheet. Broil on one side about 1 minute, then turn over and brown on other side for about 1 minute. Serve assembled ahead of time by placing a spoonful of the tomato mixture on top of each piece of bread, or allow guests to spoon mixture on the bread themselves. Year in review: Could have been better
Roughly 12 months ago I wrote a concluding paragraph in my wrap up of the “Movie Year 2019,” which forecast what we could look forward to in 2020. Boy, was I caught off guard by the pandemic and all the changes that came by the time March rolled around. "Wonder Woman 1984" was perfectly enjoyable, but the latest James Bond movie and the "Top Gun" sequel still haven't seen the light of day. I skipped "Mulan," because I still have not completely made my peace with the existence of Disney+ in the landscape of feature filmmaking. The truncation of major movie-going meant that, until last Christmas, the best movie I'd seen was "The Way Back," a Ben Affleck basketball movie the previous February. It's a decent movie, but I don't think it'll be celebrated in 30 years in the same way that we look at "Hoosiers." Only two films released in the last calendar year cleared $100 million in ticket sales. Those were, sadly, "Bad Boys for Life" and "Sonic the Hedgehog." There hasn't been a previous year since 2020 with fewer releases since 1983. But, once 2020 cinema found a way, the greatest movies were: 1. "The Kid Detective" -- While the throwaway release of this movie was a disappointment, the intricacy of Abe Applebaum's life's work, as a renowned child detective trying to find relevance in his failed adulthood, is beguiling. I went for the color and humor and found something I'd been missing since the days of "Brick" and my beloved "Veronica Mars." "The Kid Detective" could have been a great limited series on Showtime. I'm just sayin'. 2. "Mank" -- Sure, I'm a sucker for black and white films.

And stories about Hollywood. And historical biopics that shed light on the middling class of stars. There was nothing to not like about this movie, and that was before watching Gary Oldman puke amid a righteous, drunken temper tantrum. He and his fair co-star, Amanda Seyfried, will be Oscar nominated for this movie, which shows how the sausage was made behind the scenes of "Citizen Kane," a movie you may have heard of. My favorite performances of 2020 started with Tom Hanks in "News of the World." I'd follow this man anywhere, so I don't see why that shouldn't include also the high deserts of Civil War-era Texas. The quaint-becoming-dangerous ensemble of "Let Him Go" (Diane Lane, Jeffrey Donovan, Kevin Costner, Lesley Manville) was worthy of the pedigree it contained. My favorite movie of 2020 is "Promising Young Woman," despite the fact that I still haven't seen the great movies that were intended to make 2020 great again, I would have loved this movie anyway. It's a dark comedy and a sexual revenge thriller. There's a message that speaks to gender politics in a prescient way. Also, it's a stellar rookie effort from a new director, Emerald Fennell (who plays Camilla Parker Bowles
on "The Crown"). "Promising Young Woman" is a layered revenge plot, cooked up by the despondent Cassie Thomas (Carey Mulligan) after her 30th birthday, when pieces of her life start to fall into place after her best friend is raped and commits suicide, as well the same with a medical school classmate several years earlier. Since she'd lost Nina, Cassie's hobby is to go to clubs, or other social settings, and pretend to be drunk in order to get guys to take advantage of her in an inebriated state. Once they try, she soberly points out the error of their ways in a manner that either frightens or embarrasses not only each of them, but also the audience. A subtext that some are physically harmed also exists, but watching them squirm through denials of intention is sickly riveting. No one is safe from Cassie's wrath, which means excellent supporting characters played by Clancy Brown, Bo Burnham, Connie Britton, and Alison Brie. "Promising Young Woman" runs 117 minutes and is rated R for strong violence including sexual assault, language throughout, some sexual material and drug use. I give this film four stars out of four.

A look inside how CBS planned Super Sunday coverage
By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) ‚Äî CBS and NBC trading Super Bowls is one of the rare times that might end up benefitting both networks. Under the usual rotation, NBC originally had this year’s game from Tampa and CBS owned rights to 2022 in Los Angeles. But in 2019 the networks and the NFL agreed to a switch. The reason was simple: CBS did not want to have its game go up against NBC’s coverage of the Beijing Winter Olympics. While NBC gets an Olympic/Super Bowl doubleheader next year, CBS gets one of the best quarterback matchups in the game’s 55-year history on Sunday with Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers facing Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. “Having gotten a matchup between Brady and Mahomes, I would make that trade every year,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said. “If you had asked us in September, what’s the dream matchup? It would have been this one. It’s almost too much to hope for, but we got it. “ The matchup also is the lynchpin to a day of programming planned for over a year ‚Äî and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Many might think arranging a network’s Super Bowl coverage falls mainly to the sports division, but news, entertainment and other departments are involved, too. It is also the first chance since the ViacomCBS merger was completed 15 months ago to show collaboration by many divisions. “Obviously, it’s a huge day for sports, but it’s really a big day for the entire network,” CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said. “On the day of the Super Bowl, you get 100 million people, and you try to lure as many of them to stick around and introduce a new show or or bolster an existing show. Every few years, we’re lucky enough to have that.” COME TOGETHER The “Super Bowl Today” pregame show not only has “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell’s interview with President Joe Biden and “Late Late Show” host James Corden with The Weeknd, it also has features from Showtime’s “Desus and Mero”, Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” and Nickelodeon’s “Unfiltered” game show. Coordinating producer Drew Kaliski has been planning features since April, but even up until this week there have been changes. When Tampa Bay reached the game for the first time a team has played a Super Bowl on its home field, Kaliski began brainstorming. He will showcase Tampa Bay fans who have seen all three of their professional sports
teams play for a championship in the last six months. With COVID-19 protocols still in place ‚Äî meaning no visits to team complexes ‚Äî along with a blizzard that hit New York earlier this week, Kaliski has been pleased they were able to do remote interviews. “We were able to have our Studio 43 set in New York as our home base to do the interviews, which looks phenomenal,” Kaliski said. “With all the obstacles we had to face, I never thought we’d be able to pull it off. And I’m a pretty positive guy. I think the effort of people and the technology that’s out there now, it’s mind boggling to think about it but it just works perfectly.” “CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY” After a crazy multi-year stretch covering a pandemic, a political campaign like no other and the transition to a new administration, CBS News gets an opportunity to focus on an event Susan Zirinsky, the division president, refers to as “almost spiritual in the American population.” The news division has been contributing features on shows and providing to affiliates all week, but its most-anticipated contribution will be Biden’s first sit-down interview since
taking office. “Christmas came early,” Zirinsky said about the network landing the first interview with Biden, which was done on Friday. “The presidential interview, you know, it is a tradition. What will appear in the pregame show will be unique. It’s more of a conversation. This is the president’s first interview and a chance for him to kind of touch America.” THE PRIME SPOT Discussions about which show will air after the Super Bowl generally are held off until after the fall television season begins in late September. But with most CBS shows not airing new episodes until November due to production delays during the pandemic, Kahl said they didn’t decide on “The Equalizer” until December. “We want to give ourselves as much information and feedback as we can before we make that choice, knowing the kind of ripple effects it has across the entire company,” he said. The series, which stars Queen Latifah, has been in the network’s plans for a while but production was delayed due to the pandemic. It is a reimagining of the classic CBS show, which aired for four seasons, and also a pair of
films starring Denzel Washington. “When we saw a first cut of the show, we liked it and gauged that it would have a very broad appeal. That makes an ideal candidate to put behind a game like this,” Kahl said. SUNDAY NIGHT COLBERT A special episode of “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” gives casual viewers a chance to see how a show known for its monologues on the Donald Trump presidency has transitioned. “I think we we haven’t said Trump’s name since he didn’t get elected. So this is an opportunity to really double down on that for people that have not maybe checked us out for awhile,” executive producer and show runner Chris Licht said. “We’ve been doing a lot on the show that has nothing to do with with Trump and we’re really going to highlight that side of Stephen, because that’s really where we are, as a show.” The show will feature Robert Downey Jr., Tiffany Haddish and Metallica. Licht said when they did a show after the Super Bowl two years ago, ratings data showed new or first-time viewers sticking around for the next two to three weeks.
