Good Mojo

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — One of the city’s original independent specialty retailers is still thriving, celebrating its 20th anniversary Oct. 1. In the middle to late ’90s, Bob Moggio started seeing real growth happening in the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. “Large companies like Walmart, Lowe’s and Target were choosing to invest in this area. I thought, ‘We need a music store. We have a great college here, we have a great high school,’” recalled Moggio, of Mojo’s Music. It took a few years, but finally the time was right in fall 2000. Moggio’s involvement in music just happened to go hand in hand with his desire to establish a successful independent music store in Edwardsville. While developing a business plan and scouting locations for a store of his own, B and G Music from Belleville also saw an opportunity and opened a satellite location at 142 N. Main St. in

downtown Edwardsville. The owner soon realized that running two locations was a much greater task than originally thought. It never really took off with the same vibe in Edwardsville as it had in Belleville. “After some significant negotiation and brainstorming with the B and G owner, we both agreed that the best plan was for me to buy the business,” Moggio, of Glen Carbon, recently recalled to The Edge. “I approached the store in a different way, sunk my teeth into it, and wasn’t going to let it go,” recalled Moggio about the business. “Early on I embraced some high-end products and added items more suited to the needs of musicians in Edwardsville.” Moggio, a musician since the 1970s, had already worked at a couple of music stores before he assumed the lease of the music store’s original owner. All the years of retail experience perfectly prepared Moggio to take the young store to a new level. He made the business his own, and Edwardsville helped make it their own

In 2012, original owner Bob Moggio, of Glen Carbon, purchased the former Imber’s Menswear store, at 144 N. Main St., and began the arduous task of completely gutting it, exposing the brick walls and an industrial ceiling. He built an office and replaced all the infrastructure — plumbing, electric, heating — with high-efficiency, eco-friendly options. From day one, Moggio recruited longtime customer, friend and current Mojo’s Music co-owner Tom Pullen, along with his wife, of Alton, to help. Pullen built Mojo’s first website and helped design Mojo’s Music’s logo, which still stands today. (For The Edge)

Moggio grew the music store and it became known as a local “must-shop” destination for guitars and amps not typically seen in small-town America. From day one, Moggio knew that in order to be successful he needed an online presence and recruited longtime customer and friend

Tom Pullen to help. Pullen, a former information technology engineer, built Mojo’s Music’s first website, putting it on the world-wide web’s map. Pullen also helped design Mojo’s Music’s logo, which still stands today.

Affordable features to consider when revamping your kitchen

Kitchens are popular gathering spots in many homes. That popularity is reflected in various ways, including how many homeowners choose to remodel their kitchens. A 2019 report from the home renovation and design resource Houzz found that kitchens were the most popular room to renovate in 2018. Homeowners considering kitchen remodels should know that the Houzz report also indicated that spending on kitchen remodels increased by 27 percent in 2018. Homeowners concerned by the cost of remodeling a kitchen should know that there are ways to give kitchens a whole new feel without breaking the bank. Appliances

Consumer Reports notes that luxury home buyers expect high-end features, including professional ranges and built-in

refrigerators that match the surrounding cabinetry. However, many mainstream brands offer “faux pro” features that can equal more expensive alternatives. Consumer Reports even notes that many budget-friendly faux pro appliances outperformed their high-end counterparts in terms of reliability. Countertops

Countertops tend to capture the eye’s attention when walking into a kitchen. Outdated and/or damaged countertops grab that attention for all the wrong reasons, while updated countertops made from today’s most popular materials provide that wow factor homeowners seek. If granite is a must-have, Consumer Reports notes that homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by choosing granite from remnants at the stone yard. If marble

is your ideal countertop, save money by choosing a domestic product as opposed to one imported from overseas. Cabinets

Custom-built cabinets may be a dream, but they tend to be a very expensive one. Such cabinets are designed to adhere to the dimensions of the kitchen, and Consumer Reports notes that they can cost tens of thousands of dollars. If that estimate would bust your budget, examine the current layout of the existing cabinets. If the layout is fine but the cabinets need work, you can give them a whole new look by refinishing them. If the cabinets must go, stock units or semicustom cabinets can provide a new look without busting the budget. Kitchen remodels can be expensive. But there are many affordable ways to revamp a kitchen.

Improve storage at home Homes are getting bigger, but it seems like people are still lamenting a lack of storage space. National Public Radio says the average American home has nearly tripled in size during the last 50 years. Despite that, 10 percent of Americans still need to rent off-site storage, according to a report in the New York Times Magazine. Self-storage facilities are one of the fastest-growing commercial real estate segments, and the Self Storage Association says there are more than 50,000 storage facilities in the U.S. alone. The commercial real estate company CBRE, Ltd., says there are roughly 3,000 self-storage facilities across Canada, and 65 to 85 percent of self-storage tenants are residential users. Improving storage at home can be a cost-effective alternative to renting storage space. With these easy tips, homeowners can maximize space immediately. Utilize track storage systems Closets may be plentiful, but if not efficiently utilized, space may still seem lacking. Track closet storage systems often make greater use of closet space than traditional shelf and hanging rod systems. Customizing closets using track systems or other modifications can improve utility of all closets in the house. Invest in storage beds Storage beds typically feature cubbies or drawers within a platform-style bed frame. It’s a practical home storage solution, and does not require any building. Think vertically Maximize spaces by looking up and down for storage possibilities. Items that are not used frequently, such as seasonal decorations or travel suitcases, can be stored in high spaces. Shelving on walls can go as high as necessary and be put to use in awkward wall areas, such as in corners or under eaves. Invest in storage benches/ottomans A stopping area inside the front door replete with a storage bench can house shoes, umbrellas, hats, backpacks, and other items, keeping them tidy and out of sight. In living rooms, look for chests or ottomans that are decorative and functional. Store throw blankets or board games inside. Recess drawers or shelves Gain more storage by recessing a chest of drawers into what is called the “knee wall” of homes that have sloped ceilings in attics and upstairs bedrooms. Utilize these short walls in an efficient manner by sinking drawers or shelves into them, without taking up floor space. Rafter shelving While in the attic (or a garage), add hanging shelves to rafters or exposed beams to create off-the-floor storage as well. These are just a few of the handy ways to improve the interior storage space in a home.

Handling major life changes

In the 1960s, researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe studied the potential link between stressful life events and illness. After examining the medical records of thousands of patients, Holmes and Rahe discovered that there was a strong correlation between the two, ultimately developing the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale. Holmes and Rahe found that the death of a spouse, divorce and imprisonment were among the most stressful life events. But a person need not be widowed, recently divorced or newly imprisoned to be dealing stress sparked by a major life change. In fact, Holmes and Rahe found that marriage and retirement, two things many people would consider positive changes, were among the 10 most stressful life events. Change can be both exciting and frightening. Men and women facing major life changes like moving, switching careers or retiring can take the following tips to heart to make such transitions go as smoothly as possible. • Embrace the positive. Change has its advantages and disadvantages, but once men and women have decided to make changes, they should shift their focus toward the positive aspects of changing instead of worrying about the potential negatives. For example, if moving, focus on the adventure of living somewhere new and

the opportunities to explore new places and make new friends. • Accept your decision. Many people spend ample time mulling the pros and cons of major decisions before ultimately deciding to make major changes. People who decide to change careers may have spent years trying to decide if such a change was the right move. Once they have come to a decision and started the process of changing, whether it’s giving a boss two weeks’ notice or putting a house on the market, men and women should accept their decision and rest easier knowing they exercised their due diligence before making a final decision. • Commit to your decision. Fully committing to change can increase your chances of making a successful transition. If moving to a new place, look for opportunities to connect with neighbors and other members of your new community. Parents can be active in parent organizations at their children’s schools, while professionals can make a concerted effort to connect with coworkers in an effort to build strong relationships that can help their transition go smoothly. • Maintain existing relationships. Professionals who are moving on to new companies and adults moving to new communities don’t have to give up their relationships with current coworkers,

Signs your gutters are in need of repair

Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home, ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. Brackets hook into the front of the gutter and are then screwed into the fascia of a home. A professional who specializes in gutter repair can perform this task relatively quickly, and it’s an inexpensive yet highly effective solution. • Gutter separation: Gutters that are no longer fastened together can leak and contribute to issues that affect the home’s foundation, siding and appearance. Clogs and the accumulation of debris can cause gutters to separate because they are not designed to hold too much weight. Replacement of separated gutters may or may not be necessary depending on how big the problem is and the condition of the existing gutters. If replacement is not necessary, separated gutters may be remedied by securing the joints, another relatively simple and inexpensive fix. • Peeling exterior paint: Paint that appears to be peeling off of your home may indicate that water is seeping over the edge of the gutter closest to your home. When that happens, water is coming down the side of the house, causing the paint to peel. In such instances, replacing the gutters is often necessary. • Basement flooding: Not all signs of deteriorating gutters are outside a home. Many a homeowner has been flummoxed by flooding in their basements, and such flooding can be caused by aging, ineffective gutters. That’s because deteriorating gutters sometimes allow water to leak near the foundation of a home, contributing to basement flooding. Fall is an ideal time to inspect gutters and have any issues fixed before leaves begin to fall or harsh winter weather arrives.

Coping with fewer hours of daylight

Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline. Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. Fairbanks, Alaska, gets just three hours and 42 minutes of sunlight on the winter solstice. Those in Barrow, Alaska, will endure a period of 67 days of darkness, according to Alaska.org. Residents of Seattle, which is even further north than cities such as Fargo, North Dakota, or Portland, Maine, deal with more darkness than those living outside the city may know. Although much of the rest of North America doesn’t experience such profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping

mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light. • Be aware of SAD. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD. • Make daylight hours count. Spend time outdoors while the sun is bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible. • Celebrate winter activities. Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter

for what can be done, rather than what can’t. • Socialize more often. Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants, or even the local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues. • Exercise more. Use the darker hours as an excuse to exercise more, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says that exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual’s mood as a result. • Light a fire. Set the kindling ablaze in a fire pit, fireplace or woodburning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light. Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if he or she embraces the right attitude.

Did you know?

According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months,

though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

Home improvements that increase home value

When granite countertops or shiny, stainless steel appliances beckon homeowners from the display areas of home improvement stores, it’s tempting to gear remodeling thoughts toward the items that will add flair and decorative appeal to a home. Even though most improvements add some measure of value, deciding which are the best investments can be difficult. Return on investment, often referred to as “ROI,” varies depending on the project. Frequently, the projects that seem like the best investments don’t bring the greatest rate of return, while those that seem like smaller projects bring substantial returns. Real estate professionals routinely weigh in with their expert advice, and homeowners can couple that advice with Remodeling magazine’s annual “Cost vs. Value Index” to reap the greatest financial impact from their renovations. The following were some of the projects that garnered the greatest ROI in 2015.

• Open the door to improvement. Region by region across the United States, installation of a new steel door on the front of a home can have a large impact on the resale value of a property. The ROI ranges from 123 percent at the highest, to 86 percent at the lowest — which is still a considerable investment return for such a simple project. Match the door’s style with the style of the house for the best value. • Turn up the kitchen heat. An attractive kitchen can encourage buyers to overlook some of a home’s less attractive components. In the kitchen, replacement countertops, wall color changes, new cabinetry and flooring offer the biggest ROI. • Dreaming of a new bedroom. Remodeling magazine also points to creating an attic bedroom to increase home value. The ROI of an attic remodel that adheres to code can garner an 83 percent ROI. • Home maintenance projects. There’s little good to improving the aesthetic appeal and functionality of a

home if there are existing structural or maintenance issues, warn experts. Siding replacement, HVAC system repair or replacement, a new roof, and basement dampness prevention solutions can be smarter investments before other flashy remodels. Many buyers have a strict budget for a house, and those buyers may be more likely to buy a house with little or no maintenance issues. Such buyers will then upgrade the kitchen or baths themselves, according to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. • Worthy window replacement. Angie’s List, a home services review and referral resource, has found that the average ROI of new windows is 77 percent. The cost of installation and energy savings tend to offset at around the 10-year point. If remodeling is on the horizon, homeowners should give strong consideration to ROI before choosing a project.t

‘Tenet’ allows cast to thrive

John David Washington, foreground, and Robert Pattinson, background, in “Tenet.” (Courtesy Warner Bros.|For The Edge)

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — I have very mixed feelings upon finally seeing “Tenet” on the big screen. It’s a dangerous, exciting picture, with top-notch visuals that compel one to really appreciate what is obviously a targeted effort to continue to do large-scale special effects sequences — without the overindulgence of computer-aided technology — which sometimes comes with this type of movie. Then again, “this type of movie” hardly describes “Tenet,” because this type of movie has rarely been made before. Intricate, thought-provoking and beautiful, the movie is also the most confounding, confusing movie I think I’ve ever seen. It’s not “L’Année dernière à Marienbad,” released in the U.S. as “Last Year at Marienbad” and in the U.K. as “Last Year in Marienbad,” which is a 1961 French-Italian Left Bank film directed by Alain Resnais. But there are concerted attempts by “Tenet” writer-director Christopher Nolan to explain his brand of time-travel trickery and help the audience to think they understand the exploits of “inverted” agents, who are manipulating the flow of time to enhance their position around a new Cold War — “cold as ice” as one vague character calls it at the beginning (or end?) of a series of ambiguous notes. The existence of “Tenet” also speaks volumes about the state of cinema in 2020’s pan-

demic age. The thing that “Tenet” does best, is allowing its amazing cast to thrive. John David Washington stars as a nameless character referred to simply and cryptically as “the protagonist.” While the hook that keeps audiences tuned into this movie is slippery, at best, I was constantly looking at my watch to see how long I’d been sucked into this world. The movie creates a tenuous grasp, but Washington never falters. His slickness is always in the game from the well-coiffed beard and tailored suits he wears, to the dry, sharp wit that peppers his calm dialogue. I was impressed by this actor in “BlacKkKlansman,” his breakthrough performance. In this picture he continues to show the same machismo and nuance as his Oscar-winning father, Denzel Washington. The protagonist is a former CIA operative, in the vein of James Bond, tasked with tracking a series of arms dealers (Dimple Kapadia and Kenneth Branagh) around the globe, and to learn what weapons they’re amassing — from the future. Robert Pattinson is a British agent assigned to help the protagonist, as well as Kat (Elizabeth Debicki), an insider who’s the abused wife of a Russian oligarch, who the protagonist needs as an asset to make the joint mission work. Pattinson is actually a likable character in this movie, and I’ve been waiting more than 12 years to write this sentence. Remember Cedric Diggory (and forget the rest). The three big set pieces in this movie include an assault on a North Asian nuclear missile silo, a plane crashing into an Oslo airport terminal and a

complicated car chase on an Estonian highway (looking a lot like Missouri’s Interstate 44 by the Anheuser-Busch Brewery) and are at the same time amazing and baffling. Enjoy the movie, but understand that it’s not Nolan’s best — not by a long shot. In its first two weeks of U.S. release, “Tenet” grossed a paltry $29.5 million. This is an astronomical sum for the low-expectations year we’re having, but a pittance for a movie that would have grossed three times that much without COVID-19. “Tenet” was supposed to save American movie-going. It was the movie that the industry built its reopening plans on, especially after “Mulan” shifted to Disney Plus. Now that patterns have been exposed and “Wonder Woman 1984” has

also jumped from its October slot, I wonder how long Hollywood can string along their exhibitors. My 7:30 p.m. showing was empty — except for me — and I could tell the theater employees were having a lonely Wednesday night, overall. Luckily, I saw a handful of great trailers, which I hope spell another sign of coming relief. “Greenland,” with Gerard Butler, and “Let Him Go,” with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, both gave me a jolt. Don’t give up on the movies! “Tenet” runs 150 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some suggestive references and brief strong language. I give this film one star out of four.

Food For Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Peel is A-Peeling By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — Pretzel rolls at Peel Wood Fired Pizza is one of those dishes that you think about later. I’m sure we have all experienced this phenomenon. You go out to eat, order something, enjoy it, and then, the next day, you wish that you had some left over. You keep thinking about it until Vicki Bennington you get the chance to order it again. These soft, salty rolls definitely fit that bill for me. And the spicy dipping mustard that goes with them are an important ingredient. I’m not sure if either one of them would have the same impact on its own, but together, they become something I go back to the restau-

rant to get, on their own. Consequently, we ordered curbside at Peel in Edwardsville, just so I could get the pretzel rolls. They are large — about the size of a baseball, and they kind of look like Pac-Men — you know, from the old PacMan video game. The house-made recipe also comes with Parmesan cream if you want it, but I asked for two mustards, instead. Yummy … OK … now I’m thinking about them again. We also ordered wings, which Peel is known for, along with its pizza. The order was generous, and we easily split the two dishes. Since we brought them home, I made a salad to go along with them. We could have ordered a salad there, too. But when we ordered, it was midafternoon, and I had it in my mind that we would just have the appetizers (or small plates) as snacks. Instead, we saved them for later and added my own salad for an easy dinner. Peel’s house salad includes mixed

greens, coppa ham, hard-boiled egg, red onion and croutons, and comes with house vinaigrette, or we could have had a Caesar, an Italian chopped salad, apple gorgonzola or farmers salad, with fire roasted corn. The wood-fired wings we chose were the Caribbean mango BBQ with cilantro and fresh mango. The savory and sweet combination was delicious. Wings also come in “Fire,” with crushed red peppers, garlic, the “House,” with spicy mustard sauce (this is a chance to try it on something other than pretzel rolls), maple bourbon black pepper, sweet balsamic or Thai style. As we pulled up to pick up our order, there were several people under the outdoor tent that now sits on Peel’s parking lot, with tables generously spaced — another option if you don’t want to take your order home. There were even high-top tables spaced outside the tent if you just wanted to stop by for happy hour. Peel’s menu offers a lot more choices, too. An Italian club sandwich, Chicken

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, September 24, 2020 • 21 Parmesan with wood-fired chicken or tarragon chicken salad sliders might sound appealing. Other shared plates include prosciutto involtini and pork tenderloin and pancetta spedini — definitely big enough to share. Obviously, you know by the name that they have pizza. In case you haven’t tried it, you should. We have eaten Peel’s wood-fired pizza before, and it is hard to beat. We’ve always done the build-your-own, mainly because I like only mozzarella cheese on my pizzas. Many of the established choices also have other cheeses, which probably appeals to most people — I know I’m the odd one out. But anyway, doing the build-your-own works for us, with lots of topping choices, and I don’t know how it could be any better. Wood-fired wings with Caribbean mango BBQ, cilantro and fresh Other pizza choices on the menu that sound interesting are mango. (Vicki Bennington|For The Edge) the bacon potato, formaggio, Grecian, fire-roasted corn carnitas, hot brown and Thai red curry. Frozen Peel pizzas are also available to carry out and have any time you want. If your preference is pasta, cheese lovers can try the house mac-and-cheese or buffalo mac-and-cheese with chicken and buffalo sauce. Peel also has a brewing company, with a new craft beer every week to explore new tastes, along with seasonal brews and a few mainstays. There’s also tasty sounding soft drinks and specialty cocktails, along with several types of wine and Prosecco. Peel is located at 921 S. Arbor Vitae, in Edwardsville, and also has restaurants in O’Fallon, Illinois, and Clayton, Missouri. For more information or to see all of Peel’s offerings, visit peelpizza.com. MOJO’S MUSIC continued from Page 18

In 2012, Moggio purchased the former Imber’s Menswear store, at 144 N. Main St., and began the arduous task of completely gutting it, exposing the brick walls and an industrial ceiling. He built an office and replaced all the infrastructure — plumbing, electric, heating — with high-efficiency, ecofriendly options. After 18 years and three grandsons, Moggio started to consider retirement. “When Bob started making noises about not being here every day, we started fantasizing about the possibility of buying the store from him,” recalled Pullen of him and his wife, Jamie. “When we were first married, we thought it’d be cool to open a music store — at the time, in Colorado, that didn’t happen — but in 2017, the company I was with at the time completely gutted my department.” So after 25 years in corporate America, Pullen realized that he was ready for something different. “Bob called me and said, ‘Whenever you’re ready, let’s talk.’ I worked here one year before purchasing the business while we

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, September 24, 2020 • 23 were planning the transition,” Pullen said. This gave him the opportunity of experiencing the day-to-day operations and customer interactions, as well as learning to run a brick-and-mortar business from the back end. “At this point in our life, we wanted to do something rewarding, not be part of ‘the machine,’” Pullen said. “We wanted to plant ourselves somewhere, and Bob had really built great relationships and a strong brand. Mojo’s was very similar to what we had envisioned, and we’ve put our fingerprint on it.” Since the Pullens bought the business — Jan. 1, 2019 — Moggio has worked three days a week to ensure a smooth transition. He won’t be riding off into the sunset entirely anytime soon. The Pullens are a family of longtime musicians, too. Tom Pullen, a former bassist in the famed ’80s band The Undecided, has played a wide variety of musical styles over the years ranging from bluegrass to jazz, country to punk. Jamie, a keyboardist and vocalist, has performed in high school and college ensembles and currently plays with her husband in their church’s worship band. The Pullens’ son and daughter major in music at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville: 21-year-old Sarah Pullen, who

plays keyboard and sings, and 19-year-old Jacob Pullen, who plays bass. The siblings are in a band together, Accidentally on Purpose, and the latter also plays in the band known as The Intrusion. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a completely new set of challenges. Pullen reached back to his experience in big business to help the store quickly adapt and continue serving the needs of musicians. During that time, Mojo’s Music provided curbside delivery, as well as hand delivery, with the Pullens delivering orders in their own vehicles, including after business hours, locally and beyond. “With the intensity of the virus shutdown, we had to rethink how we did everything,” Tom Pullen said. “We’ve had to keep people safe and have employees providing for their families. Thankfully, we were able to keep everyone employed during the shutdown.” The demand for guitars and musical gear did not decrease during the business shut-downs. “We significantly strengthened our online presence and shipped a lot of product out of here,” Jamie Pullen said. “Another thing — during this pandemic, with everyone stuck in their houses, a lot of people started playing instruments to have something to do.” Mojo’s was able to ship product quickly, often the same day as ordered, when some larger chain stores were not able to ship at all, showing once again that brick-andmortar, local mom-and-pops are a better choice. “Ironically, Bob’s second year was when Sept. 11 (2001) happened, so he dealt with some of the same kinds of things, was able to navigate those waters, and came out stronger,” Tom Pullen recalled. Mojo’s has remained resilient as a result of all the recent challenges. They even picked up a few new lines and brands during the shutdown, providing an outlet when other outlets closed or reduced lines. With the transition of ownership, there have been no big, sweeping changes, but the new owners continue to support a great customer base, some who come into the store on a daily basis. “This is their ‘Cheers,’” Pullen said. New Mojo’s customers have also come by way of musicians who have performed at The Wildey Theatre, right down the street.

“If they were in need of something in a pinch, and came down the street for a bite to eat, they saw an independent music store,” Pullen said. “We sold a guitar to Rusty Young from Poco who played it that night on stage at the Wildey,” Jamie Pullen noted. They also sold equipment to Jimmie Vaughan of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and former Jethro Tull lead guitarist Martin Barre, both of whom came across Mojo’s Music because they were playing at the Wildey. “Bonnie Bramlett, who played in a band with The Beatles’ George Harrison, came in one day and spent over an hour just talking music with us. It’s a great place to be,” Pullen said. “Our kids love it, too,” Jamie noted. “They got to talk to Martin Barre, and he even put his autograph on ‘Thick as a Brick,’ which our son had purchased on vinyl.” Mojo’s mostly sells and trades guitars, but also carries other instruments, as well as amplifiers, effects pedals, accessories, sound and recording gear, and percussion equipment. Mojo’s also offers instrument and equipment repair, band and orchestra rentals, and music lessons. During the month of October — Mojo’s anniversary month — the specialty retailer will have various promotions and specials, which can be viewed at its Facebook page. “We’re having some great giveaways and deep discounts, and a day when we will restring guitars for patrons who bring in a donation to a local charity,” Tom Pullen said. “We call it ‘Good Mojo,’ the charity arm of the business.” In recent years Mojo’s Music dedicated donations for services to Toys For Tots and the Glen Ed Food Pantry. The Pullens also gave away a Taylor guitar at Christmastime to help increase donations. “We want to give back to the community that has really helped us grow,” Jamie Pullen said. “It’s been great,” Tom Pullen reiterated. “It’s close to our original plan, but it turned out better. With both of us and our kids involved, it really is a mom-and-pop music store.” For more information and Mojo’s Music hours, visit mojosmusic.com or call 618655-1600.
