After a 49-30 Week 2 loss to Mesick, the Sabers bounced back with a 50-14 win over Baldwin in Week 3. A key player in the win was junior running back Nathan Oleniczak, who totaled 148 rushing yards and 2 scores on 18 carries

The Bobcats earned their first win of the season of the year in their conference opener, knocking off Manistee Catholic Central in straight sets The Italian foreign exchange student proved to be an X-factor for Brethren, delivering nine service aces in the victory

Some football players have a nose for the football while enjoying violence. Manistee Catholic Central senior Eddie Dutkavich is one of those individuals. The linebacker posted 11 tackles and a fumble recovery in the Sabers 52-34 loss at Farwell.

The Manistee girls cross country may me poised for big things in 2022 Junior Cecilia Postma continues to play her part in the quest. She posted a time of 21:06.10 in the 2022 Ludington Cross Country Invite, good enough for third place and was less than 30 seconds from the first place time

On top of a bubbly personality which positively infects the Sabers roster, Ana Watkins is a steady hand for the squad in 2022 In a pair of matches against Baldwin and Mesick this week, the senior provided 15 service points, four kills, four aces and 32 digs

The Bobcats earned 360 yards rushing against Bear Lake. 184 of those yards came from Lucas Stapley The senior tallied 63 yards in the games first 12 minutes, and his first carry of the second quarter went 7o yards for his second touchdown of the game.

The Chippewas earned a week two victory over Mason County Central, improving to 2-0 on the new campaign. Kaden Kott rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries and scored twice. Max Miles ran for 89 yards on eight carries, while Isaiah Davis carried it eight times for 51 yards.

School: Manistee Catholic Central High School

The Sabers snapped a five-game losing skid to Brethren in a 26-14 Week 7 win, and Pizana played a large part. The senior earned an 81-yards receiving touchdown, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions in the win.

Brethren football took down Baldwin this past Friday during their homecoming celebration. Sophomore running back Jeff Meszaros ran for 168 yards and two scores. He also had two receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Brethren volleyball competed in its own tournament on Oct 1 and fell short of advancing to the semifinals However, senior Bobcat Benedetta Pasquinuzzi boasted 13 aces, three digs, four assists and two kills.

During the Lakers final home match of 2022, which featured senior night, parent night and their annual pink out game lumped into one evening, the senior showed out. She recorded 10 service points and eight aces.

The senior running back proved to be an x-factor in the Portagers’ 66-18 Week 8 win over Fife Lake Forest Area. Lesarge earned 190 yards and five touchdowns off only nine carries

Five members of the Chippewas’ district championship squad had five players earn All-Conference honors. Defender Ben Schlaff earned first-team honors to cap off his senior season.

After claiming its third straight district title, Onekama volleyball appeared its second regional title game in the last three seasons. Senior Carly Bennett was one of the pistons which drove the Portagers engine in 2022. She amassed 50 assists in the regional round.

One of five seniors on the Sabers 2022 squad, Johnson earned first-team All-Conference honors. She amassed 101 digs, 37 kills, 26 aces and 25 assists in West Michigan D League action this season.

Kaylin Johnson recorded a double-double behind a team best 19 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 7-of-14 from the field in a 44-34 victory over Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic on Dec. 3.

Caden VanSickle

Sport: Football School: Manistee High School

Following his senior season, Caden VanSickle received first team all-conference recognition and was named to the Division 6 All-Regional team by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. Defensively, he recorded 31 tackles, three sacks (team-high), and one fumble recovery.

During the Lakers 40-19 win over Leland, the Lakers saw three players finish in double-digit point totals. One of those young men was Myles Harless, who earned a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.

With a 45-30 win over Shelby, the Chippewas improved to 5-3 on their season entering Christmas break. Junior Jayne Edmondson helped lead the offense, scoring 16 points while earning four steals, three rebounds and two assists.

On Dec. 16, Brethren center Stella Estes recorded 12 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks in a 28-27 victory over Marion.

Onekama’s Luke Bradford posted 14 points, one assist, 11 rebounds and four steals in a 55-50 victory over Suttons Bay on Dec. 16.

Sport: Basketball School: Onekama High School

After sitting out last season due to an injury, Onekama’s Madison Gutowski played as if she didn’t miss a beat last week. The senior tallied 15 points against Brethren on Jan. 18 and 10 points against Kingsley on Jan. 20.

Sport: Swim School: Manistee High School

To say that Manistee’s Alec Lampen has been off to a hot start to the season would be an understatement. The junior took first place in the 100 yard backstroke at the Holland Christian Division 3 Invitational on Jan 14th with a school-record time of 51.67. Lampen set a pool record at Ludington’s Don Baldwin pool in the 100 yard backstroke on Jan. 19 with a time of 53.93.

Last week, the Lakers split a pair of games with Baldwin and Marion, defeating the former and losing to the latter Against Baldwin, freshman guard Scout Stulz had seven points, eight boards, seven steals and one block When facing Marion, she finished with seven points, six rebounds and two steals.

Manistee Catholic Central’s Jackson Star Chief helped the Sabers win back to back games last week against Bear Lake and Pentwater Against the latter, he scored five points and grabbed two rebounds.

Last week, senior big man Adam Domres helped the Portagers earn victories over Brethren and Leland. Against the Bobcats, he scored 16 and grabbed five rebounds, while adding 15 points and nine boards when defeating Leland.

Maddy Biller

School: Brethren High School

Brethren’s Maddy Biller helped the Bobcats stay undefeated with two wins over Bear Lake and Cadillac Heritage Christian. Biller netted eight points and eight rebounds against the Lakers before scoring eight points, dishing two assists, grabbing five boards and stealing the ball four times when facing Heritage Christian.

The Sabers saw two players have breakout performances during a 48-41 win over Central Lake One of those players was freshman Nathaniel Barnett, who earned 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting to help MCC reach the finals of the 2022 Manistee Catholic Central Christmas Tournament.

Manistee Catholic Central High Shcool girls basketball also reached the finals of the Christmas tournament by knocking off Central Lake. MCC senior Leah Stickney proved to be an x-factor in the win, earned a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while adding four steals in the 43-34 win.

Sport: Basketball School: Manistee High School

In the final week of the regular season, Manistee guard Jayna Edmondson caught fire. The junior pumped up 21 points in a 67-43 win over Holton on Feb. 21 and scored 20 points in a 58-45 win over Fremont on Feb. 24.

Sport: Swim School: Manistee High School

While the Chippewas fell short of a team Coasta Conference Championship, many of its members earned individual titles on Feb. 25. One of those individuals was senior Travor Adamczak. He was part of the 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard freestyle relays which earned first-place finishes while qualifying for state finals in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.10.

When confidence and opportunity collide, you get what Ava Pike accomplished on Feb. 19. The sophomore earned a third-place finish in individual wrestling regional to earn a berth in the state finals at Ford Field in March.

Austen Halcome

Sport: Basketball School: Manistee High School

The Chippewas have found their stride as of late, winning three of their last four games after a 67-51 road win over in-county foe Onekama on Feb. 15. Austen Halcome led the charge for Manistee, tallying 24 points in the win.

Tug Thuemmel

Month: February 2023

Sport: Swim School: Manistee High School

During a home meet against Ludington on Feb. 9, Manistee’s Tug Thuemmel earned a pair of individual victories. The senior earned a first-place finish with the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.95 and a first-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.95, a time fast enough to qualify him for state finals.

Sport: Basketball School: Manistee Catholic Central High School

While 18 points during a 56-28 win over Bear Lake on Feb. 7 is enough to earn consideration of a nomination, her six made 3-point attempts in the win tied a program record set back in the 1990s put her over the top in a competitive field this week.

Sport: Basketball School: Manistee High School

While Manistee girls basketball is searching for the last piece to its puzzle before districts, junior Libby McCarthy is starting to find her mid-season form. The Junior earned a pair of double-doubles last week, earning 23 points and 13 rebounds against Reed City on Jan. 31 and accumulated 14 points and 10 rebounds against Whitehall on Feb. 2.

Sport: Basketball School: Onekama High School

With a 65-43 win over Leland on Feb. 3, Onekama boys basketball improved to 10-4 on the season while winning five of its last six contests. Freshman Luke Bradford led the way in the Portagers win over the Comets with 16 points and seven rebounds, both team bests.

The 2022-23 season brought a lot of positives for the Lady Bobcats. Individually, four members of the team earned all-conference accolades. Junior Elly Sexton was one of those, earning a West Michigan D League first team all-conference selection.

Sport: Basketball School: Manistee Catholic Central High School

The Sabers improved their win total from a season ago in 2022-23. Senior Lee Pizana left an imprint on the program and the WMD, earning a place on the second team all-conference list.

Adam Domres

Sport: Basketball School: Onekama High School

The Onekama boys basketball team appeared in its first district title game since the 2017-18 season on March 10. While the Portagers fell short, they saw a strong performance from senior Adam Domres, who earned a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points.

Sport: Basketball School: Onekama High School

Behind a pair of seniors and a plethora of underclassmen, Onekama girls basketball claimed its second district title in four seasons. While the Portagers season ended on March 7 with a loss to Gaylord St. Mary, they saw freshman Hailey Hart tally a team-best nine points in the regional semifinal round.

The Chippewas finished with their best finish in five seasons during the 2022-23 campaign. Junior Jacob Scharp’s efforts were recognized by opposing coaches, earning a spot on the West Michigan League Lakes Division all-conference honourable mention list.

Sport: Basketball School: Onekama High School

The Portagers 2022-23 season was filled with vaunted competition, starting with a clash against Kalamazoo Hackett, which reached state quarterfinals, and featured two games against state champion Maple City Glen Lake. Senior Madison Gutowski’s efforts in her farewell season did not go unnoticed, earning a spot on the Northwest Conference Honorable Mention list.

Isaiah Davis

Sport: Powerlifting School: Manistee High School

Manistee’s Isaiah proved he’s one of the strongest high schoolers in the state of Michigan. He claimed a first-place finish in the 242 pounds weight class on March 4’s state championships at Adrian High School, lifting a total weight of 1,395 pounds.

Despite the Bobcats falling short to Onekama in March 3’s district title game, they saw a strong showing from center Stella Estes. The sophomore finished with a game-best 13 points while adding six rebounds, four assists and a block

Sport: Baseball School: Bear Lake High School

Merrill was locked in from the pitcher ’s mound against Buckley on April 20. Merrill threw a no hitter, fanning 10 Bears batters and walking one across five innings of work.

Ava Mauntler

Month: April 2023

Sport: Softball School: Onekama High School

The Portagers earned their first win of the season 13-3 over Ludington in a doubleheader split on April 20. The eighth grader finished 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and three RBI from the batter ’s box and allowed three runs off eighth hits with on walk and four strikeouts across four innings of work from the circle.

Manistee girls soccer is off to a scorching 4-0 start to its 2023 season. Exchange student Emily Rabeler has helped the cause, netting the game winning goals in a 1-0 win over Montague on April 12 and in the Chippewas 2-1 win against Suttons Bay on April 14.

Sport: Baseball School: Bear Lake High School

The reigning district champions are off to a respectable 3-2-1 start to the 2023 season. Junior Zach Griffis finished 3-for-5 with a double, walk and 3 RBI in a doubleheader against Mason County Eastern on April 10 while allowing one earned run off two hits with four strikeouts in two innings of relief. He also finished 2-for6 with 2 RBI in a doubleheader at Mesick on April 13.

Sport: Softball and Track and Field School: Brethren High School

In the first week of the 2023 spring sports season, junior Maddy Biller made her presence felt in two sports. In track and field, Biller broke the program record in discus with a throw of 96 feet. In softball, the Bobcats earned a sweep against Shelby where Biller earned four hits and six RBI in the doubleheader

Sport: Track and Field School: Manistee Catholic Central High School

In the first outdoor meet of his freshman campaign, MCC’s Andrew Potter turned in a pair of string performances in the Manistee Early Bird meet on April 5. Potter earned a first-place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.62 seconds and in the 300 meter hurdles (48.36) and a second-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (20.53).

Manistee Catholic Central senior Leah Stickney helped her team reach the district finals and earned second team all-conference honors within the West Michigan D League.

Sport: Cross Country School: Benzie Central High School

Some athletes from overseas may struggle initially while adjusting to a sport in an unknown area. Huskies’ Pol Molins needed no time to adjust to running in America. His time of 16:50.3 was good enough to earn 10th place out of 119 in the 2022 Pete Moss Invitational.

Payton Miller

Sport: Volleyball School: Frankfort High School

The Panthers junior has proven to be big part of the teams attack so far this season. The junior delivered eight kills, four digs and three aces in a 3-0 win over Buckley this past week. Miller has accumulated 118 kills, 59 digs and 36 aces across 49 sets so far in 2022.

Sport: Cross Country School: Frankfort High School

After a season-best time of 17:25.3 at Sept. 20’s Kalkaska Invitational, the senior has earned a top-3 overall finish in Frankfort’s last six events. He’s less tha 20 seconds off her personal best time with a shade over a month left in the 2022 campaign.

Hunter Jones

Sport: Cross Country School: Benzie Central High School

A three-time reigning state champion, Jones set himself apart in a pair of events this past week In the Huskies conference opener, Jones cruised to a first place finish with a time of 16:03.0. To follow his performance, Benzie Central tripped to compete in the Ottawa Hills Invitational Jones bumped up to compete with bigger schools and claimed another first place finish. His time of 14:43.2 was also a course record.

Fletcher Anderson

Sport: Football School: Frankfort High School

During the Panthers week two win, the team tallied 427 yards rushing off of 40 carries. Anderson accounted for 14 of those carries and 181 yard on the ground in the Panthers 53-16 win. The junior also led the team with 12 tackles.

Kinzee Stockdale

As Frankfort’s gym stayed hot from the blistering outside heat, Stockdale’s energy failed to waver The senior recorded 19 digs in a five-set win over Brethren on Aug. 30.

Mylie Kelly

Sport: Cross Country School: Benzie Central High School

With a large portion of the Huskies girls team graduated, Kelly has stepped up into a leadership role for the squad. To add her season so far, the junior earned a third-place finish at the 2022 Cadillac Bandeen Viking Invitational with a time of 19:25.4 to help the Huskies finish second in the team standings.

We’re getting to a home match Zickert provided a little bit of everything for the Huskies against Elk Rapids. The junior tallied four kills, four aces and a block.

The Benzie Central football program defeated Lakeville in a 54-0 homecoming victory on Sept. 30. Junior wide receiver Jaxon Childers accumulated 157 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.

Ava Bechler

Sport: Volleyball School: Benzie Central High School

Benzie Central and Frankfort volleyball collided on Sept. 27 for a huge rivalry matchup. The Huskies walked away victorious with Ava Bechler leading the way She had 14 kills, six digs, one block and one ace.

Nick Stevenson

Sport: Football School: Frankfort High School

The Panthers defeated Harbor Springs 38-20 on Oct 7. Stevenson earned 142 yards on the ground and finished 8-of-17 for 132 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The junior accumulated 18 assists and eight digs in the Panther ’s match against Leland on Oct. 5.

The junior fought through the cold October rain to help the Panthers earn a 22-6 victory over rival Maple City Glen Lake He earned a rushing touchdown and 11 Tackles in the win.

The Huskies setter showed out in the teams tri-meet against Kalkaska and Traverse City Christian

In the Huskies regular season finale, Katt left everything on the field. Despite suffering a 20-14 overtime loss at Sault Ste. Marie, the senior earned a 79-yard kick return for a touchdown, accumulated 10 total tackles and added 34 yards rushing.

The Huskies cross country program appears primed for another big season entering the final stretch of the season. Nora Grossnickle has played her part during the 2022 campaign The sophomore finished 10th at the 2022 Late Season Warrior Invitational on Oct 22 with a time of 21:12.84

Sport: Football School: Benzie Central High School

With a 21-14 win over Charlevoix on Oct 28, Benzie Central will play for its first district title trophy since 2003 Quarterback Dan Wallington helped lead the charge in the win, finishing 8-of-13 for 90 yards and two touchdowns through the air and added 56 yards rushing off seven carries.

In the Panthers final week of regular season action, the senior hitter showed out. Being a setter on a volleyball team is no easy task. Frankfort’s Eliza Frary was able to play the role at a high level in 2022. For her efforts, she earned a spot on the Northwest Conference Honorable mention list.

Jaxon Childers

Sport: Football School: Benzie Central High School

After racking up 23 total touchdowns 1635 total yards on offense and six interceptions on defense, it’s safe to say that junior Jaxon Childers made his presence felt during the 2022 season. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed by opposing coaches, earning Northern Michigan Football League First Team All-Conference and MHSFCA Division 7 All-Region Team honors.

In a 53-42 season opening victory over Reed City, Gloria Stepanovich stood out, scoring 12 points and six steals for the Benzie Central Huskies.

During a non-conference clash at Manistee on Dec. 5, Savina Anhalt had a performance which put her on the map. The sophomore recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the 46-33 victory

Emmerson Farmer

First-game jitters can hinder any player at the start of the season. Frankfort’s Emmerson farmer was an exception to that philosophy The junior led all players with 14 points, finish 4-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-4 from 3-point range in a 43-32 win at Onekama on Dec. 9.

Miles Pritchett helped lead the Huskies to a 54-41 victory over Buckley on Dec. 16, scoring 17 points in the contest.

Following the 2022 campaign, Cael Katt was named to the Division 7 All-Regional team by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association He ran the ball 62 times for 478 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 11 passes for 173 yards and two scores. Defensively, Katt recorded 62 solo tackles, five interceptions and 16 pass break-ups.

Playing an arch rival means every play is magnified. For Benzie Central junior Kara Johnson, her effort was put on full display under the microscope. She earned a team-best 16 points and seven steals in a 43-28 win over Frankfort on Jan. 12.

Similar to the girls team, Benzie Central boys also collided with rival Frankfort. The Huskies saw a breakout game from freshman Rowan Zickert, who accumulated a team-best 15 points in a 55-44 win on Jan. 13.

After facing a 20-5 deficit after the first quarter against Leland on Jan. 20, Benzie Central girls basketball mounted a comeback for the ages with a 48-45 win over the Comets. Senior Gloria Stepanovich helped lead the way with a double-double behind 17 points and 20 rebounds.

With the Panthers’ girls team also staring down a tournament title, they saw strong guard play from Kylee Harris in the title game She knocked down 18 points in a thrilling 42-41 win over the Sabers in the title game on Dec. 29.

Benzie Central’s Dominic Lopez made school history on Feb. 17 when he won the singles tournament. In six games, he recorded scores of 201, 212, 200, 190, 224 and 198 for a total score of 1,225.

Kinzee Stockdale

Sport: Basketball School: Frankfort High School

Frankfort’s Kinzee Stockdale earned recognition this week for her fantastic effort against Glen Lake on Feb. 17, scoring six points and continuing to lead the Panthers despite falling short of beating the Lakers.

Landen Pangborn

Sport: Wrestling School: Benzie Central High School

Benzie Central’s Landen Pangborn took home first place in the 132 pound weight class on Feb. 11, qualifying for the regional tournament and winning a district title, alongside the rest of the Huskies, who also qualified for the event.

Anna Wolfe

Sport: Skiing School: Benzie-Frankfort High School

The Benzie-Frankfort girls ski team won the Lake Michigan Ski Conference championship on Feb. 8, scoring 274 overall points. Anna Wolfe finished second overall for the entire season, trailing Onekama’s Aleah Blackmore by 40 points.

While the Huskies finished second as a team in Feb. 4’s Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference championships, they did have two members of the team earn first-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Junior Tyrone Brouillet was one of those two, earning a first-place finish in the 157 pound weight class.

Benzie Central’s Maicee Jones has stepped up during the 2022-23 campaign. Jones racked up several hits against Charlevoix on April 18 and worked her way into the Huskies leadoff spot.

Sage Myers

Sport: Softbal School: Frankfort High School

Frankfort’s Sage Myers threw two no hitters against Mason County Eastern on April 13, earning back-to-back victories. She pitched a combined six innings, while striking out 13 batters and surrendering just one walk.

Frankfort’s Nick Stevenson had an afternoon at the plate against Mason County Eastern on April 13. He went a combined two-for-five with three RBI and two walks in back-to-back victories for the Panthers.

Frankfort’s Presley Bartley helped the Panthers track and field team start off on the right foot this season. She set a season record in the 100 meter hurdles with a third place finish (18.77).

With baseball season around the corner, senior Logan Lewis has his next step planned out. Lewis signed to play baseball at Olivet College once he finishes his senior season with Frankfort.
