DIFFERENCE MAKERS — Softball Zaylei Evans West Central There isn’t a more versatile player in the area than West Central’s Zaylei Evans. She can play every position, and play it well — although she’d rather not pitch. She might move to catcher this year, which would be bad news for area base-stealers. She hit .466, too. Zoe Evans West Central Zoe Evans, Zaylei’s older sister, hit .548 last season, and she can hit the ball a long way. She also plays a solid first base for the Cougars. Makenna Baptist Routt One of the area’s best center fielders, Makenna Baptist is also one of the best hitters. She batted .421 last year with 32 hits, 28 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. Bella Powell Routt Bella Powell was primed for a breakout season before injuring her knee early last season. She’s back, and primed to boost the Rockets, who return 10 starters from last year. Bella McCartney Routt Bella McCartney has become one of the area’s best hitters. She hit .451 last season with 37 hits, 25 runs and 24 RBIs. This could be a memorable season for the Rockets’ right fielder. Anna Burrus Triopia A reliable glove at shortstop, Anna Burrus is also one of Triopia’s best hitters. She injured her knee in the first game last year, but she’s back to lead the Trojans in her senior season. Sara Evans Triopia Sara Evans sat out last year but returns for her senior season. One of the area’s best second basemen, Evans will help shore up the Trojans’ defense on the infield. She can hit, too.

Alyssa Dour Beardstown What’s not to like about Alyssa Dour? She finished last season with a 13-7 record in the circle, with an earned run average of 1.89. At the plate, she punishes opposing pitchers, hitting .426 with 10 home runs last year. There could be some big doings in Tiger Town this spring. Rilee Hobrock Beardstown Rilee Hobrock is another solid hitter who will make Beardstown tough to beat this year. Hobrock hit .370 with six home runs last year, and she’s really come into her own as the Tigers’ catcher. Addy McClure PORTA/A-C Central Addy McClure had an outstanding season for a team that had an outstanding
season. The Lady Jays’ pitcher recorded 10 wins, with a 2.31 ERA and 80 strikeouts last year. At the plate, she batted .440 and rapped out 33 hits to help lead her team to the Sangamo Conference championship. Carlye Ornellas Greenfield-Northwestern Carlye Ornellas put together a spectacular season last year. The Tigers pitcher had a 2.52 earned run average, with 73 strikeouts in 77 and two-thirds innings pitched. She also hit .413 and is primed for another great year. Hannah Rhoades Carrollton Pitching is the name of the game in softball, and Carrollton’s Hannah Rhoades was one of the area’s best. Rhoades went 11-9 last year with a 1.55 ERA and 128 strikeouts. At the plate, she batted .292 with five
home runs and 28 RBIs. Malena Bixby New Berlin Malena Bixby went 7-3 in the circle for the Pretzels after returning from an injury last season and is expected to be even more dominant this year. She finished last year with a .484 batting average. Korissa Woolsey North Greene The North Greene softball team lost some key players, but Korissa Woolsey is back after finishing last year with the highest batting average in the WIVC-South. Alivia Ernst PORTA/A-C Central Alivia Ernst hit .443 with four home runs last season for the Lady Jays. That made a difference.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS — Baseball Cory Ronan Routt Junior Cory Ronan is one of the area’s most dominant pitchers. The tall left-hander went 6-2 last year with a 1.35 ERA. Ronan, a University of Hawaii recruit, also batted .412 last season. Adam Lindsey Routt Adam Lindsey gives Routt another weapon on the mound. Lindsey finished with a 6-0 record last year, with a 3.17 earned run average. He batted .390 last season. Ian Hayes Routt Ian Hayes batted .321 last season and gives the Rockets an advantage behind the plate as one of the area’s best catchers. Cade Tomhave Pittsfield Junior Cade Tomhave returns to the Saukees’ lineup after hitting .453 as a sophomore. Look for big things this year. Drew Ezard Jacksonville Drew Ezard batted .333 with four home runs, 23 RBIs and 30 runs scored last year, and he’ll be a key component as the Crimsons try to improve on last season’s 15-16 record. Nolan Decker Jacksonville Pitcher Nolan Decker was solid on the mound last season, going 2-2 with a 2.12 earned run average and 29 strikeouts. He also batted .299 with 10 doubles and 29 runs batted in. Ty Malcomson Triopia The Trojans surprised a lot of people in basketball this year. Ty Malcomson is one reason why they may do it again, in baseball. Malcomson finished the season with a .429 batting average and is poised to lead Triopia again this year. Brady Pembrook Greenfield-Northwestern Brady Pembrook led Greenfield-Northwestern with a 1.68 earned run average in his freshman season. He also finished with a .513 on-base percentage and scored 39 runs to help the Tigers set a school record for wins. Jacob Lansaw Greenfield-Northwestern
Routt’s Cory Ronan delivers a pitch in the playoffs last season. (Dennis Mathes | Journal-Courier)
One of the area’s best hitters, Jacob Lansaw batted .548 last year, with 40 hits, to help lead the Tigers to a regional championship. They would love nothing better than to take the next step.
Brian Stinson Rushville-Industry Coming off an injury-plagued junior season, Briar Stinson looks to bounce back this year. He enters the 2020 season with a .447 career batting average.
Avery Quigley Beardstown Avery Quigley led Beardstown with a .397 batting average last season and gave the Tigers a steady glove at second base. Look for another good year.
Nathan Hendricker Brown County Nathan Hendricker is back for his senior season after batting .443 last year with 44 runs scored. The All-WIVC pitcher/shortstop went 2-1 on the mound in 2019. NEW BERLIN baseball Hit hard by graduation, the New Berlin baseball team still returns five starters, with three key players back from a team that finished 18-12 a year ago and advanced to a sectional championship game before losing to Pleasant Plains. Christian Knox (OF/IF/P), Zach Brewer (C/P) and Matt Diamond (2B/P/OF) are all back this year. The Pretzels lost Matt Helm (P/1B/3B), Mark Owens (3B/P/SS/C/OF), Dalton Minder (P/3B/OF),
Luke Bergschneider (OF) and Jared Miller (OF). Coach Joe Kindred, entering his 12th season at New Berlin, expects newcomers Cole Baker, Gavin Molloy, Bradley Ott, Evan Harness and Matt Drake to contribute this season. Kindred said the team’s goal is to win 15 or more games and compete for another Class 2A regional championship. The coach said the conference is balanced and could be won by a number of different
teams this season. Williamsville, Auburn, North Mac, and Plains should be strong again this year, Kindred said, along with non-conference opponent Routt. ”Staying healthy is a big key for us this year,” Kindred said. “Offensively, we will need to focus once again on the details of moving runners along, setting the table for our big bats in the lineup. On defense, we will rely on staying fundamental and throwing strikes.”

NEW BERLIN softball The New Berlin softball team has seven returning starters from a team that finished 10-16 last year. The team lost pitcher Alex King, catcher Chloe Allen and all-conference second baseman Caitlyn Braker. But all-conference shortstop Abby Stockton, the team’s senior captain, is back, along with Malena Bixby, Kenna Bixby, Katie Long, Sierra Eiganmann, Sam Mies and Ella Rogers. The Pretzels have some key newcomers this year as well. “The freshman class looks to contribute quickly with the additions of Kaitlyn Reynolds (P/1B), Mae Bandelow (C/IF), and Kailyn Middleton (P/IF),” said coach Tim Roberts, entering his
second season at New Berlin. “Sophomore Julia Owens saw a glimpse of varsity as a freshman, and we are looking to her for a much bigger role this year.” Roberts said the team is looking for Malena Bixby to pick up where she left off last year. Bixby finished with a record of 7-3 in the circle after returning from an injury. Freshman Kaitlyn Reynolds will contend for substantial innings this season as well. Few teams can hit the ball like New Berlin. The Pretzels return a ton of offensive firepower this season, with Malena Bixby (.484 batting average), Sierra Eiganmann (.466, 29 RBIs), Ella Rogers (.439, 21
runs scored, 16 stolen bases), Katie Long (.342, 20 RBIs, 26 R) and Abby Stockton (.318, 24 R, 20 SB). “Outside of a few starting seniors, we will look for contributions from our sophomore and freshman classes,” Roberts said. “We will count on our youth to fill in the gaps left by last year’s seniors. Our pitching will be improved from last year, which is an important piece for this team. I believe our offense will be consistent with last year’s team. Defensively, we should be able to take some pressure off with stronger pitching. Our infield should be very solid, and we look to improve our outfield play. I love the team chemistry of this team.”

BROWN COUNTY baseball Head coach Jared Hoots brings back a solid team as he enters his 12th season at Brown County. “I think we bring back a strong team to compete in the conference, and for a regional,” Hoots said. “We return our one through four hitters and have good competition in the bottom of the order. I think this is the deepest we have been as far as pitching goes. We have a lot of arms we can run out there. This is a hardworking group that will play hard. I am excited to see what we can do this year.” The Hornets lost Bain Woodward, Bryce Bergman and catcher Lanny Sussenbach from last year’s team,
which finished 14-13-1. Returning starters include allconference selections Nathan Hendricker (senior shortstop/pitcher, .443 batting average, 44 runs scored), Gavin Miller (senior outfielder, .402, 35 R) and Gabe Blakeley (sophomore outfielder/pitcher (.408, 44 RBIs), as well as Chance Fuqua (junior infielder, 337, 27 RBIs), Mason Henry (sophomore first baseman/ pitcher, .203, 11 RBIs), Wyatt Fink (senior infielder/ pitcher), Cody Haynes (junior utility/pitcher) and Collin Boylen (junior catcher/outfielder). Key newcomers include Evan Buss (UT/P), Bryar Lenover (junior, OF), Colby Wort (freshman, INF/P),
Will Groesch (1B/P), Wyatt Logsdon (junior, UT/P), Ethan Howell (sophomore, C/OF), Jacob Laning (sophomore, INF), Hayden McCombs (junior, INF/P) and Camden Robertson (sophomore, INF). Key returning pitchers are sophomore Gabe Blakeley (4-1 last season), senior Nathan Hendricker (2-1), Mason Henry (3-0) and Cody Haynes (2-2). Evan Buss, Colby Wort, Gavin Miller, Wyatt Fink and Will Groesch will all see innings. “We should have a lot of good competition for positions,” Hoots said. “A lot will depend on who is on the mound.”

BROWN COUNTY softball The Brown County softball team was in a rebuilding year after losing most of its starters due to graduation. Now the Hornets are primed for a big season. “Last year was a transition year for us as we had lost eight starters going into the 2019 season and had several underclassman gain some valuable playing time,” said David Woodruff, entering his fifth year as head coach. “Kacy ‘Ducky’ Dunlap is our
lone senior, and she will be continuing her softball career next fall at Lincoln College.” Juniors on the team are: Claire Markert, Allison Prather, Jordan Craven, Izzy Anderson and Maddy Wydell, as well as newcomers Jasmine Butler and Aubree Jones. Sophomores are: Grace Groesch, Karsyn Moorman, Savannah Rogers, Cortni Law, Peyton Wegs and Makenna Post. The team also includes freshmen Taryn Moorman, Cyrah Dunlap,
Katey Flynn and Klare Flynn. “We have quite a few starters back from last year’s team, and we have lofty goals for what this group can accomplish this spring,” Woodruff said. “The girls are competing for starting spots during these couple of weeks, so positions are not ironed out yet, but look for Taryn Moorman to do a bulk of the pitching. The Flynn twins, and Cyrah Dunlap will also look to push for playing time as freshmen.”

ROUTT baseball Coach Ryan Turner has plenty of talent to work with in his first season at the helm of the Routt baseball team. “The 2020 Rockets have a good mix of quality upperclassmen and a versatile freshman/sophomore class,” the coach said. “Next-level ability on the mound from Cory Ronan and Adam Lindsey and staff, along with a solid defense and timely hitting will be keys to the Rockets’ success this season.” Routt lost All-Stater Drew Winters, Matthew Muller (P/1B), Jared Plunk (P/INF) and Lucas May (OF). But there’s plenty coming back, including key returning
hitters Cory Ronan (.412 batting average), Adam Lindsey (.390), Braden Cors (.329), Ian Hayes (.321), and Clayton Costello, who batted .278 in an injury plagued 2019. Turner said Costello has a high upside this year. The coach said his team also has a versatile freshman group coming in, led by Ryan Oswald (P/1B/3B/ OF), Ethan Walker (SS/P/3B/2B), Daxton Baptist (P/ OF/C), Will Merwin (P/INF/OF) and Joe Whalen (OF/ INF). Position by position, the Rockets stack up like this: catchers — Ian Hayes, Daxton Baptist, Gabe Rossi; first base — Ryan Oswald, Cory Ronan, Braden Cors;
shortstop/third base/second base — Clayton Costello, Adam Lindsey, Ethan Walker, Braden Cors; and outfield — Cory Ronan, Gabe Rossi, Daxton Baptist, Joe Whalen, Will Merwin. The Rockets will excel on the mound, led by Adam Lindsey (6-0, 3.17 ERA) and University of Hawaii recruit Cory Ronan (6-2, 1.35 ERA). Other players who figure to pitch include Ryan Oswald (freshman), Clayton Costello (senior), Ethan Walker (freshman), Daxton Baptist (freshman), Braden Cors (sophomore), Will Merwin (freshman), Austin Kafer (junior) and Trace Reich (senior).

ROUTT softball All 10 starters are back for the Routt softball team, including ace pitcher Bella Powell, who was injured early last season. “We are very fortunate to return all 10 starters we had last year depending on who was pitching,” said Routt coach Jamie Martin. “After reaching the Sweet 16 last year, we have high hopes for the season, returning everyone and adding back a healthy Bella Powell and key freshmen contributors Hannah Parlier and Jessie Winters. I feel very confident in our abilities on both
sides of the game. This team has as much talent as any team I have ever coached. “But we still have to go out and play the game we are capable of like anyone else. And of course, we have to stay healthy. If that happens, It should be a very fun season to be a part of.” Routt returners pitchers Emily Cosgriff, Bella Powell and Ally Hicks. The Rockets have a ton of players who can hit the ball, led by Bella McCartney (.451 batting average, 37
hits, 25 runs, 24 RBIs), Caitlyn Horney (.427, 35 H, 27 R and 17 RBIs), Makenna Baptist (.421, 32 H, 28 R, 18 RBIs, 24 stolen bases) and Kirby Peters (.300, 23 RBIs, 13 R). New coach Jason Bryant said this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting pre-seasons for the Western/Griggsville-Perry baseball program, with seven starters returning from last season. They include Eli Berg, Tucker Kunzeman, Joel Bryant, Erick Hively, Rilee West, Tate Kunzeman and Aaron Miller. The Wildcats lost three key players from last year’s team, but veteran players are eager to step in. The team also has two juniors (Carl Conley and Canin Rennecker) and four freshmen (Jaylee
Bryant, Jaxen White, Reece Briscoe and Blane Miller) looking to make an impact this year. The Wildcats have some good pitchers coming back. “We look to spread innings across four strong starters: Tucker Kunzeman (3.68 earned run average, 30 Ks); Erick Hively (28 IP, 31 Ks); Joel Bryant (17 Ks .307 OBA); and Rilee West (14 Ks, .238 OBA),” Bryant said. “Also pitching will be sophomores Tate Kunzeman and Aaron Miller, junior Carl Conley, and freshman Jaxen
White.” Western also returns some solid hitters in Eli Berg (.500 batting average, 13 RBIs), Tucker Kunzeman (.429, 9 RBIs), Joel Bryant (.314, 9 RBIs), and Erick Hively (.309, 10 RBIs). Tate Kunzeman, Rilee West, Aaron Miller, and Canin Rennecker all are looking for breakout years. The Wildcats finished 2019 with an eye-popping team fielding percentage of .918. The coach thinks his team can improve on that this year.

CARROLLTON baseball Six starters return for the Carrollton baseball team in Alex Rahe’s first season as head coach. The Hawks lost two important players in Nathan Walker (.546, 54 runs, 51 RBIs; 46 innings pitched, 2.74 ERA, 74 Ks) and Gabe Jones (.404, 30 runs, 36 RBIs; 38 2/3 IP, 4.89 ERA, 41 Ks). But they return starters Grant Pohlman, Hunter Flowers, Gus Coonrod, Clay Schnettgoeke, Garrett Settles and Ethan Brannan. Key newcomers include Kyle Leonard and Boden Flowers. “Our biggest strengths lie in pitching and hitting,” Rahe said. “Brannan, Settles and Schnettgoeke bring a lot of quality pitching experience to our squad. Coonrod and Pohlman showed a lot of promise last year as well. Grant Pohlman’s talent at the catcher position is surpassed only by his dedication to improving. We are bringing back a
lot of great hitters as well, in Hunter Flowers, Ethan Brannan, Garrett Settles, Gus Coonrod and Grant Pohlman.” Carrollton returns five players who pitched last season, including Ethan Brannan (42 2/3 innings, 3.37 ERA, 51 Ks), Grant Pohlman (23 2/3 innings, 3.80 ERA, 31 Ks), Clay Schnettgoeke (22 2/3 innings, 3.57 ERA, 16 Ks), Garrett Settles (21 innings, 7.29 ERA, 12 Ks) and Gus Coonrod (18 innings, 1.00 ERA, 23 Ks). Hunter Flowers, Boden Flowers and Kyle Leonard also figure to pitch this season. The Hawks also return five players who batted .300 or better last year, including Ethan Brannan (.330, 27 runs scored, 35 RBIs), Hunter Flowers (.329, 19 R, 20 RBIs), Garrett Settles (.349, 18 R, 20 RBIs), Grant Pohlman (.336, 38 R, 11 RBIs) and Gus Coonrod (.307, 36 R, 17
RBIs). Defensively, the opening-day lineup could look like this: pitcher — Ethan Brannan (senior); catcher — Grant Pohlman (sophomore); first base — Hunter Flowers (senior); second base — Chris Beiermann (senior); shortstop – Gus Coonrod (sophomore); third base – Clay Schnettgoeke (senior); left field – Garrett Settles (senior); center field – Kyle Leonard (sophomore); and right field – Boden Flowers (freshman); with reserves Koal Smith (sophomore, 2B/OF), Mason Baumgartner (freshman, OF) and Cameron Heath (freshman, 2B/OF). “Our biggest weakness is our lack of numbers,” Rahe said. “To me, this means that success relies on our players staying healthy all year and receiving some bigger contributions from our underclassmen.”

CARROLLTON softball The Carrollton softball program is building momentum as it heads into coach Travis Klingler’s third season. “We have a talented roster this year with depth that will lead to some competition for starting positions,” Klingler said. “We are looking to compete for a WIVC conference championship by locking down defensively and being aggressive offensively and on the base paths.” Returning in the circle this year will be the Hawks’ top pitcher from last year, junior Hannah Rhoades (11-9, 1.55 ERA, 128 Ks; .292 batting average, 5 HR, 28 RBIs), along with incoming freshmen Kylie Kinser, Lauren Walker and Ryan Kallal.
“I am hoping that Hannah can build off the experience she gained last year,” Klingler said, adding that the work she did in the offseason will help Rhoades take her pitching to the next level. Other starters from last year’s 18-12 team include WIVC All-Conference selections senior Kennedy Ruyle (.326, 30 runs, 16 SB), junior Ava Uhles (.337 16 runs, 22 RBI) and junior Layna Mullink (.309 22 runs, 10 SB). Klingler expects returning players Lucy Powell (senior) and Beclyn Pinkerton (junior) to step into new roles on the infield. Marissa Cox, Ella Stumpf and Sophie Pohlman also will compete for some time in the infield.
Competing in the outfield for a couple of spots will be returning juniors Layna Mullink and Alayna Snyder, along with sophomores Hailey Becker and Mallory Darr. The Carrollton softball program will welcome in seven new freshmen, including Kylie Kinser, Ella Stumpf, Sophie Pohlman, Ryan Kallal, Lauren Walker, Morgan Blasa and Paige Henson. Carrollton lost five seniors from last year’s team, including one of its best hitters, shortstop Hannah Krumwiede, as well as pitcher Marley Mullink. “It will be difficult to replace these girls,” Klingler said, “but we have plenty of juniors and sophomores hungry to take on those roles.”

“If they can put some runs on the board, I think their fielding and pitching will be a strength this year.”
— Tyler Crum Coach
The Rushville-Industry baseball team will look to improve on last year’s 9-15 record with a new head coach, Tyler Crum. Returning 13 varsity letter winners from last year, the Rockets will be a veteran team. Led by Wabash Valley Community College commit Briar Stinson, the Rockets also return seniors Brady Klitz, Aidan Davis, Dylan Bigham, Ethan Thornton, Ian Mellor, Collin Shelts and Morgan Smith, all of whom saw time in 2019. Joining those seniors from last year’s roster are juniors Keaton Hulvey, Gage Logsdon and Evan Mathus, and sophomore James Corrie. With only a few key players gone from last season, the Rockets look for contributions from juniors Kayde Shaw, Gavin Runkle, Kanon Prather and Jaydn Prather, as well as sophomore Tanner Spencer. The pitching staff will be led by Keaton Hulvey, who won four games and lost two in 2019, with 41 strikeouts and only 13 walks. Also returning on the hill will be Brady Klitz, Gage Logsdon and James Cor-
rie. Looking to help out will be Gavin Runkle, Evan Mathus and Tanner Spencer. After an injury plagued junior campaign, Briar Stinson looks to bounce back and lead RushvilleIndustry’s batting order, with a career average of .447. Also looking to come up big with the bat will be Keaton Hulvey, Brady Klitz, James Corrie and Gage Logsdon. Starting infielders look to be Briar Stinson, Keaton Hulvey, Evan Mathus, Brady Klitz and James Corrie, as well as Gavin Runkle, Kanon Prather and Tanner Spencer. Starting outfielders will be Gage Logsdon, Aidan Davis and Tanner Spencer, as well as Ethan Thornton and Kayde Shaw. The Rockets will be a veteran team this year, looking to take the next step after a sub-.500 season. They don’t have much depth, but they do have some talented players poised to turn things around in 2020. “If they can put some runs on the board, I think their fielding and pitching will be a strength this year,” Crum said.

RUSHVILLE-INDUSTRY softball The Rushville-Industry softball team returns four starters from a team that finished 15-9 last season. “We have four returning starters from last year: Whitney Fowler (senior), Gretchen Ward (senior), Jerzie Wilkerson (senior), and Elliott Stinson (sophomore), who was Prairieland All-Conference last year,” said coach Craig Crosier, entering his fifth season. “We will look for these girls to become the leaders on and off the field this year.” The Rockets lost some key players, several of whom were three- and four-year starters. “Ashley Chancy, Chaddam Crosier, Cassadi Forman, Mad-
elyn Belville and Olivia Salrin will be missed from this year’s lineup,” Crosier said. “Crosier and Belville carried the load on the mound last year, so we will be looking to fill those positions.” Elliott Stinson will be the team’s only returning pitcher. “Even though she is only a sophomore, she has had plenty of varsity pitching experience and will be the workhorse and leader of our pitching staff,” Crosier said. “Also on that staff will be Ainsley Eskridge, Annika Ebby and Kailin Wright.” Since the team graduated so many starters last year, the Rockets are expecting to have some dif-
ferent girls step up and fill roles. “We have several sophomores and freshmen who are hungry to have the opportunity to earn a varsity position,” Crosier said. “Over the next couple of weeks we will have some position battles to see who will earn the starting positions.” The team has some solid bats returning. Elliott Stinson (.500), Gretchen Ward (.313) and Whitney Fowler (.306) figure to be key components to the Rockets’ offense. “We will be a young team this year,” Crosier said, “but the girls are working hard and fighting to earn positions.”

JACKSONVILLE baseball The Jacksonville baseball team is looking to build on last season’s record of 15-16 with a more experienced club this year. “We have a lot of experience coming back from last year’s team,” said JHS coach Cory Bunner, entering his seventh season. The Crimsons have seven returning starters, including Ryan Maul, Dalton Strubbe, Drew Ezard, Nolan Decker, Will Rohlk, Jack Rohn and Tanner Howell. JHS lost Cole Reif, Trevor Huston and James Brammeier from last year’s team. Key newcomers are Garrett
Meyer and Quin Saxer. “If we can get guys to understand their roles and be great at them, we have a chance to have a successful season,” Bunner said. Leading the pitching staff will be Nolan Decker (2-2, 2.12 ERA, 29 strikeouts) and Tanner Howell (4-4, 4.12 ERA, 37 Ks). Ryan Maul, Dalton Strubbe, Drew Ezard, Will Rohlk, Garrett Meyer and Quin Saxer all figure to pitch this season. Drew Ezard returns as the team’s best hitter. Ezard had a .333 batting average last season with four home
runs, 23 runs batted in, and 30 runs scored. Nolan Decker (.299, 10 doubles, 29 RBIs) and Ryan Maul (.255, 32 R, 24 SB) also had solid years at the plate last season. “Our pitching depth should be a strength,” Bunner said. “Offensively we should be able to contribute up and down the lineup. Defensively, we are still working to find the best fit for guys. This also has to do with, most of our position guys will also pitch for us. We have a great group of guys that work hard and enjoy being around one another.”

JACKSONVILLE softball Jacksonville will field a small, but talented softball team this year. “We are a very small team, having 13 players total,” said Jessica Padilla, who coaches the team along with Tara Scott. “However, the girls we have in positions are solid players. If we stay away from injury and illness this season, these girls will do great. This team is positive and really fun to be around. They all love the sport and are excited for the season. We are hoping for a better offensive season this year. Scoring runs always makes the game
more fun.” Jacksonville finished 8-21 last year. Returning starters are Arynn Leonard, Taylor Brobeck, Miranda Eldridge, Bailey Campbell, Paige Scaman, Frankie Hoots and Kiley Force. The Crimsons lost Regan Graham, Kiley Jacobs, Veronica Parkavich and Hailey DeGroot from last year’s team. JHS also will be without Destiney King, who broke her ankle last season. Key newcomers are Lexi Lane, Lexie Blackley, Nevaeh Brickey, Taryn Ford (injured last season),
Allie Bowman and Annabell Christensen. Arynn Leonard is the team’s top returning pitcher. Leonard finished last season with a 6.59 earned run average. Paige Scaman and Taryn Ford also figure to pitch this year. “Having Arynn on the mound and Miranda (Eldridge) catching is a huge strength for us, as both of them are experienced at this position,” Padilla said. Arynn Leonard, Miranda Eldridge and Frankie Hoots are expected to lead the Crimsons at the plate.

PITTSFIELD baseball John Schultz is about to embark on his 29th season as head coach of the Pittsfield baseball team, and he’ll have plenty of returning starters to work with as the Saukees try to improve on last year’s 11-15 record. “Our main strength for 2020 would have to be the number of returning starters we have,” Schultz said. “We also have our catcher back, who we lost midseason last year due to an injury. If our pitchers throw strikes and we play to win, we should be successful. We lost two pitchers to graduation in Isaac Shaw and Colin Meleski, who together combined for nine wins in 2019.” The team also lost John Scranton to graduation. But
look who the Saukees have coming back. Returning starters include Griffin VanWinkle (senior catcher), Noah Gay (senior outfielder/pitcher), Nathan Scranton (sophomore infielder/pitcher), Hayden Gresham (senior outfielder/pitcher), Brock Ladner (senior infielder/outfielder/pitcher), Caden Casto (sophomore outfielder/catcher/pitcher), Peyton Apps (junior infielder/pitcher), Cade Tomhave (junior infielder/outfielder) and William Guthrie (senior pitcher/first baseman). Leading returning hitters are Cade Tomhave (.453 batting average), Nate Scranton (.354) and Hayden Gresham (.320). Key newcomers include senior Cody Bradshaw and
juniors Ian Damon, Alex Hernandez, Cameron Walker and Liam Davidsmeyer. Other prospects include Bradley Gratton, Keller Personett, Jackson Fish, Logan Shinn, Phillip Graham, Jackson Throne, Randy Springer, Abe Welbourne, Nolan Daniel, Jameson Noble and Ean Thelander. “We have nine different players who pitch and are also position players,” Schultz said. “Depending who is on the hill dictates our defensive look for that game. Many players are pretty versatile. At this time we may have no pitcher that we might call our No. 1. Time will tell who emerges to be our top two or three pitchers. Many times it turns out to be a player we least expect.”

PITTSFIELD softball The Pittsfield softball team is young, but coach Kristi Heafner likes what she’s seeing — and hearing. “The 2020 Lady Saukees are young,” said Heafner, entering her fifth season. “We have a lot of holes to fill in the outfield. Early in the season we will be working a lot to see who fits where and what works best for our team. We need to clean up our errors from last season and focus on finishing games. Our bats need to be consistent, and we need to be smart on the bases. I love the chatter I have heard at practices. The girls are supporting each other and working hard as a team.”
Pittsfield returns no less than eight starters: Avery Lewis, Maggie Weir, Chloe Walston, Quinn Phillips, Audrey White, Rachael Boatright, Matti McCartney and Emma Saxe. “Last year’s team was anchored by four strong seniors,” Heafner said. “We lost three of our outfielders in McKinley Jennings, Adelyn Cox and Lilly Pepper. Kameron Smithers led our infield at third base. Jennings, (.384, 26 RBIs) and Smithers, (.385, 25 RBIs) led our offense. Their bats will be tough to replace.” Both of Pittsfield’s varsity pitchers return this sea-
son. Senior Avery Lewis pitched 86 and two-thirds innings last season and finished with a 3-11 record. She had an earned run average of 4.36. Junior Audrey White pitched 79 innings last season, finishing with a 5-7 record and an ERA of 3.0. They will get the majority of the innings this season. Key returning hitters for the Saukees include senior Quinn Phillips (.339), junior Audrey White (.342) and sophomore Matti McCartney (.368). “With a combination of contact hitters and power hitters,” Heafner said, “we expect these ladies to lead the team.”

GREENFIELD-NORTHWESTERN baseball The Greenfield-Northwestern baseball team just had the best season in school history. And the Tigers have the team to make this year even better. Eight starters and a solid pitching staff return for Greenfield-Northwestern, which last year set a school record for wins with 17, and won the Class 1A Morrisonville Regional. “We do not have a lot in numbers, but are deep in talent and competitiveness,” said Jacob McEvers, who takes over as head coach after serving as an assistant for the past three years. “We will have a lot of guys that can throw, and many different moving pieces in our lineup. We have a lot of flexibility in the daily lineup.” Returning starters this year are: senior Blake Bettis; juniors Jacob Lansaw, Clayton Woods, Blake Woelfel and Gavin Roberts; and sophomores Brady Pembrook,

Connor Bettis and Drake Stuart. The Tigers add senior transfer Cade Bilbruck, as well as Brett Bilbruck. The Tigers lost Hayden Lansaw and Devin Chaudoin from last year’s team. On the mound, the team will return three sophomores who finished last season with a sub-3.00 earned run average, along with three juniors who totaled almost 70 innings pitched last year. Sophomore Connor Bettis led the team in wins, with six. Junior Jacob Lansaw led the team in starts, with five. Sophomore Brady Pembrook led with an earned run average of 1.68, and sophomore Drake Stuart was right behind with a 2.38 ERA. Juniors Clayton Woods and Blake Woelfel are two other important components of the pitching staff. Cade Bilbruck, Blake Bettis and Tanner Goode also figure to

The Tigers can hit the ball, too, led by Clayton Woods (.398 batting average, 42 steals, 41 hits), Brady Pembrook (.513 on-base percentage, 39 runs scored) and Jacob Lansaw (.548 batting average, 40 hits). Blake Woelfel, Drake Stuart, Gavin Roberts, Tanner Goode, Blake Bettis and Connor Bettis all can handle the bat. McEvers said what coaches love most about this team is that every guy has the opportunity to play; they return eight starters from a regional championship team; and they add a senior to the roster. “We have a freshman that will add great depth behind the plate and in the order,” McEvers said, “and think the new pieces will only help us move forward as a program.”

GREENFIELD-NORTHWESTERN softball First-year Greenfield-Northwestern softball coach Kristie Ornellas has a young team but a pitcher with plenty of experience coming back. “We are a young team behind a veteran pitcher,” Ornellas said. “Though we may be young, we have a lot of heart and determination on this team. We look forward to improving throughout the season.” Ace pitcher Carlye Ornellas returns to the Tigers’ lineup. Ornellas had a 2.52 earned run average in 77 and two-thirds innings pitched with 73 strikeouts. Tor-

Returning starters for Greenfield-Northwestern include: Carlye Ornellas Taylor Smith, Laural Rothe, Torrie McAdams, Raven Courier and Jealee Clark. The Tigers will have some players who can hit the ball. Key returning hitters are Carlye Ornellas, who finished last season with a .413 batting average, Taylor Smith (.310) and McAdams (.270). Key newcomers for Greenfield-Northwestern are
Lacee Bramley and Bailee Mathews. The Tigers lost Peyton Arnett and Megan Jones from last year’s team, which finished 8-9. “Our goal is to cut down on some of our errors from last season and improve our team’s overall batting average,” Ornellas said. “These girls are quickly becoming a family that is supporting each other and learning to work together. We have some great leadership from our seniors that is helping the team come together.”

NORTH GREENE baseball After a 2-14 season last year, the North Greene Spartans are gearing up for a bounce-back season in 2020 under first-year head coach Caleb Watts. Three returning seniors with varsity experience, Jackson Goodall, Collin VanMeter and Taylor Scott, as well as several returning juniors, give the Spartans some quality upperclassmen leadership. Key newcomers for the upcoming season include senior Brady Brown, junior Dalton Mitchell, sophomore Brayden Roberts, and several freshmen who look to fill the holes left by several departing seniors from last year’s
North Greene team. The Spartans lost Carter Hoesman, Kaiden Heberling, Justin Lawson and Drake Frazier. Taylor Scott, who sported a 3.36 ERA, and an impressive 9.0 strikeouts per game, and Jacob Suttles are two returning pitchers who look to make an impact on the mound this year. Walker McMillen, Brayden Roberts and Calvin Shaw will also look to contribute quality innings on the varsity mound. Some key returning bats for the Spartans include Collin VanMeter, who hit .275, with a .396 on-base percentage, and stole 22 bases in 22 attempts. Taylor Scott also
had a solid offensive season, batting .294 and driving in six runs. Brady Brown, Dalton Mitchell, and Jackson Goodall all look poised to help the Spartans drive in runs. “North Greene is bringing back some quality varsity experience, and combining it with a group of newcomers who are excited to come out and compete on a daily basis,” Watts said. “As a new coach, one thing I love about this team is their heart. They come out excited to play the game, and there’s a lot of great energy and leadership on this team.”

NORTH GREENE softball Three starters return for the North Greene softball team in coach Nathan Roberts’ fourth year at the helm. The Spartans finished 19-9 last season. “We are returning three starters from last season’s team,” Roberts said. “We are losing five key starters, with two of those being All-Staters and the other three being all-conference players. We will be a young team this year, with having no seniors on the team, but a group of juniors that have all played a lot of varsity games already in their positions. “Our sophomore and freshman class have a lot to offer this year,” the coach said. “We have two return-
ing pitchers that saw varsity action last year in the circle and will look to build on that experience.” Kourtney Woolsey and Libby Rogers will do most of the pitching this season for North Greene. “Kourtney Woolsey and Libby Rogers will see a majority of the time this year in the circle,” Roberts said. “Both have pitched some varsity, along with quite a bit of travel ball.” This should be a solid team at the plate again this season, led by Korissa Woolsey, one of the best hitters in the area. “We should have a very well-balanced hitting team
that should put a lot of contact on the ball this year to put a little pressure on the defense,” the coach said. “Leading that hitting attack will be Korissa Woolsey, who led the WIVC South last season in batting average. She sprays the ball around the field well and can hit with a little pop from time to time.” Roberts expects this group to play well in the field to back up the Spartans’ pitchers. “We should be a pretty decent defensive team, which will help out our pitchers,” the coach said. “We will be young and should compete with a lot of teams.”

WEST CENTRAL baseball Things are looking up for the West Central baseball team after a 6-14 season in 2019. “We have a relatively small team this year with 14 players, but I like the potential this team has,” said Grant DeWitt, entering his third season as head coach. “Most of the kids are baseball savvy kids who know the game. I am anxious to get the season started and see what these kids can accomplish.” Returning starters include WIVC All-Conference selection Gabe Cox and Drew Evans. The Cougars also will be returning Noah Smith, Wes Hughes, Coby Zimmerman, Dylan Fox, Landon Barnett, Lathan Barnett and Cole Meyer. Newcomer Tyson Brown, a freshman, could play a
big role for the team this year in the field as well as on the mound. The Cougars graduated four seniors last year, Braden McLaughlin, Aaron Brown, EJ Korte and Blake Clayton. “Each played a pivotal role in the team’s accomplishments over my first two years as the head coach,” DeWitt said, adding that the leadership those seniors provided will be missed, but the team is looking for others to step up and fill that role. The Cougars plan for Evans to be the workhorse on the mound this year after he threw 38 innings in 2019. He finished the season with a 2.76 ERA and struck out 46 batters. Wes Hughes, Landon Barnett,
Gabe Cox, Lathan Barnett, Gabe Drake and Tyson Brown are others who will be asked to throw several innings this year. West Central has some solid hitters returning, including Gabe Cox, a two-time all conference selection (.403, 27 hits, 10 RBIs, 21 runs scored), Evans (.295, 3 RBIs, 10 R), and Noah Smith (.235, 12 RBIs, 9 R). “We are also looking at big offensive production from Wes Hughes, Dylan Fox and the Barnett twins,” DeWitt said. Starting positions were up for grabs. With a long postseason run by the West Central boys’ basketball team, the team had only a handful of full-squad practices in preseason.

WEST CENTRAL softball West Central softball coach Kandice Kunkel doesn’t have a lot of players, but the players she has know the game. “The Lady Cougars bring a lot of experience to the dirt this spring,” said Kunkel, entering her second season. “I think that this team is capable of contending for a conference title in the WIVC. We have a good core group of our team returning to key positions on the field this season, and we also have some new faces in the lineup as well that should settle in nicely to our program. We may struggle at the beginning and even during the regular season, but by the time postseason comes around, we will be functioning like a well-oiled machine. We look for this season to be full of a lot of growing, promise and fun. We take everything
one out at a time, one game at a time.” Returning starters include All-State Second Team and two-time All-WIVC selection Zoe Evans (junior, 1B), Sydney Elliott (junior, SS), All-WIVC selection Keely Spencer (junior, catcher), and All-WIVC selection Zaylei Evans (sophomore, CF). Other returning players include Halie Daniel (senior, OF), Ashley Gregory (sophomore, utility) and Tinley Wagstaff (sophomore, utility). Key newcomers to the team are Whitney Kunz (senior), Lakyn Parker (sophomore), Rylee Burk (freshman), and Abbie Vieira (freshman). The Cougars lost Ally Frost (outfielder, .341 batting average), Katy McHugh (second base, .317), Kacie
McCleery (catcher, .345) and ace pitcher Karlee Wade (.366). Rylee Burk and Ashley Gregory figure to get most of the innings in the circle this year. West Central returns some solid hitters, including Zoe Evans (.548), Zaylei Evans (.466), Keely Spencer (.339) and Sydney Elliott (.329). “We are going to be a solid hitting team again this season,” Kunkel said. “On any given day, any one of my players is capable of having a great day at the plate. We have an arsenal of good hitters, so it will be challenging for our opponents to pitch around all of them. We have several girls returning that hit over .300 last season, so we look to improve on those numbers as the season progresses.”

BEARDSTOWN baseball Five starters return for the Beardstown baseball team, including a pair of promising sophomores who started as freshmen last year. “We’ve got kids with a lot of experience, I think, coming back,” said Beardstown’s Robin Lewis, entering his 28th season as head coach. “Some of them are young, but we started two freshmen last year in Jacob Pate and William Davidsmeier. They threw 23 and 24 innings, respectively. They had five wins between them, and only two losses, so we’re looking for good things out of them.” Other returning starters include Avery Quigley, Clint Cooper and Cris Villegas. The Tigers have some key newcomers, including freshmen Micah Wink, Owen Quigley and Owen O’Hara, as well as sophomore Brock Krumboltz. Lewis expects all of them to make an impact before the year is over. Added to the mix is a group of juniors — Agustin Urquiza,
Drake Seaman, Oscar Espinoza, Jack Elam and Dakota Bolen — and senior Carlos Montoya, most of whom are getting their first taste of varsity action this year. They could contribute. And they’ll have plenty of opportunities as the Tigers try to replace Chase Piehler (.369 batting average), Adam Kirchner (.326) and catcher Ryan Orr. Just about everyone on the team can pitch, and they’ll be called on to throw some innings. The team will rely heavily on Jacob Pate and William Davidsmeier, as well as seniors Avery Quigley and Clint Cooper, who struck out 75 batters in 55 innings of work last season. “We’re looking to get some things out of those two seniors, leadership-wise,” Lewis said. Cooper and Quigley are also the team’s top returning hitters. Quigley led the team last year with a .397 batting aver-
age, and Cooper hit .365 with 26 RBIs. Villegas hit .298. “Our two freshmen, one of them was at .294, and the other was at .230,” Lewis said. “They took some lumps last year, but we’ll look for good things out of them. They’re a year older, a year smarter and a year stronger.” Defensively, the team has plenty of options at each position: third base — Zach Watson, Davidsmeier, Jonathan Montoya, Jonathan Sanchez, Carlos Montoya; shortstop — Davidsmeier, Avery Quigley, Clint Cooper; second base — Quigley, Davidsmeier; first base — Oscar Espinoza, Cris Villegas, Dakota Bolen; outfield — Jack Elam, Dakota Bolen, Alexis Gil and others; catcher — Micah Wink, Villegas, Quigley, Owen O’Hara. “I like what we’ve got,” Lewis said. “Talent-wise, I think we’re OK. Experience-wise, I like what innings we have coming back on the mound.”

BEARDSTOWN softball The Beardstown softball team has plenty coming back, including ace pitcher Alyssa Dour, from a team that finished 19-11 last season. “Lots of returning pieces, deep pitching staff, looking for the outfield to develop and looking for a spark at the top of the lineup lost with Hillary McGill,” said coach Robbi Howard, entering his fourth season. “Lots of potential. Hopefully, we’ll piece together success.” Beardstown lost Jayna Herzog, Camilla Garcia
and versatile slap-hitting lead-off batter Hillary McGill from last year’s team. Seven starters return for the Tigers, including pitcher Alyssa Dour, first baseman Ellie White, second baseman Shayna Price, shortstop Hayley Sloan, catcher Rilee Hobrock, pitcher/utility player Rachel Hager and outfielder Kourtney Logsdon. Key newcomers to Beardstown include outfielder Alayna Deacon, second baseman/outfielder Reagan Krumboltz and pitcher/infielder Marlee Brown.
The Tigers will be relying on their returning pitchers to help take the team to the next level. Dour went 13-7 last season with a 1.89 earned run average. Rachel Hager had a 6-4 record with a 5.86 ERA. Marlee Brown also figures to pitch this season. The Tigers also have a solid batting order. Dour hit .426 a season ago, with 10 home runs. Rachel Hager batted .276 with 13 RBIs; Rilee Hobrock batted .370 with six homers; and Hayley Sloan hit .320.

TRIOPIA baseball
Six starters return for the Triopia baseball team and head coach Rich Thompson, who enters his 12th year at the helm. “I believe we will be a pretty strong defensive club, and I believe we will have a decent hitting lineup,” Thompson said. “We do not have great overall team speed, and we are very young and inexperienced in the pitching department. We are a young team that will get better over the course of the season, but I think we have the possibility of peaking at the right time.” The Trojans lost Zach Thompson, Shawn Bell, Michael Burns, Ben Stanberry and Garrett Snow from last year’s team, which finished 11-13.
Returning starters are Broc Moore (3B), Russell Gregory (OF), Garrett Bell (1B/OF), Ty Malcomson (OF), Caden Moore (C/INF) and Mason Fricke (P). Spot starters Brayden Booth (INF), Cordell Walker (INF), Sam Stanberry (P/INF) and Brendan Kanaske (OF/P) also return, along with Alec Coil (INF/P), who missed the entire 2019 season due to injury. Key newcomers include Alec Coil, Owen Bell, Ben Krause, Joe Walker, Grant Wisdom, Jacob Walkington and Eric Caldwell. The Trojans return some big bats. Broc Moore hit.324 with 19 RBIs last season. Ty Malcomson batted .429, and Caden Moore finished with a .328 average. Alec
Coil is expected to add some pop to the batting order. Broc Moore, Alec Coil, Garrett Bell, Cordell Walker, Sam Stanberry and Owen Bell all figure to start at some point on the infield, with Ty Malcomson, Russell Gregory, Brendan Kanaske, Joe Walker and Eric Caldwell in the outfield. Caden Moore or Ty Malcomson will be behind the plate. Triopia’s key returning pitchers are Mason Fricke (4-3, 5.09 earned run average) and Sam Stanberry (1-3, 3.5 ERA). Brayden Booth, Brendan Kanaske, Caden Moore, Ben Krause, Cordell Walker, Russell Gregory, Jake Lakamp, Sam Sullivan and Garrett Bell could all see some innings on the mound.

TRIOPIA softball
The Triopia softball team has a solid group of returning starters heading into the 2020 season. No less than seven players return, including Anna Burrus, Madison Gregory, Peyton Knous, Hailey Reynolds, Kendra Stock, Sailym Reid and Abby Covington. That list doesn’t include Sara Evans, who sat out last year but returns for her senior season. Key newcomers include Jaci Stambaugh, Megan Reynolds, Jocelyn Bartels and Sara Evans. Triopia lost Grace Duesterhaus, Hannah Werries, Kam Portwood and Hannah Krause from last year’s team. Key returning pitchers for the Trojans are Madison Gregory and Jayla Waid. “We’ve finally got some experience,” said coach Ty Gebhardt, entering his fourth season with the team. “One’s a senior, the other one’s a junior, so I know we’re
going to be throwing a lot more strikes this year. Our defense is going to be on their toes a lot better. And they’re working real hard on their pitches and their location, which is a lot better than last year.” Jocelyn Bartels should see some innings in the circle as well this year. Injuries torpedoed the Trojans last year, in particular Anna Burrus, who hurt her knee in a collision in the team’s first game. Burrus is back to lead Triopia’s hitting attack, along with Sailym Reid, Sara Evans, Madison Gregory and Abby Covington. “We get the bat on the ball, and I think this year we’re going to be more contact hitters, one through nine,” Gebhardt said. “Last year we had a couple holes, and our girls are a lot more confident this year. We’ve actually got some upperclassmen. We’re not relying on a bunch of
freshmen and sophomores.” It’s a team filled with versatile players, competing for playing time at every position: third base — Abby Covington and Jaci Stambaugh; shortstop — Anna Burrus and Kendra Stock; second base — Hannah Workman and Sara Evans; first base — Sailym Reid, Rachel Nelson and Jaci Stambaugh; outfield — Hailey Reynolds, Kendra Stock, Peyton Knous, Megan Reynolds and Presley Wankel; catcher — Presley Wankel, Ava Ganz and Sailym Reid. “I like our team,” Gebhardt said. “We’ve got a good group of girls here. They all get along. Our upperclassmen are taking our young kids underneath their wing and helping them out with drills and stuff. Our sophomores and juniors are starting to get things and understand stuff.”

PORTA/A-C CENTRAL baseball Last year the PORTA/A-C Central baseball team finished 11-12. The Bluejays return Cade Privia, Jake Shannon and Cole Chalmers, all of whom played quite a few innings last year. New head coach Brett Leischner said the team is looking to newcomers Blake McDaniel, Aaron Suiter, Bryton Butler and Dane DeGroot to make a big impact this spring. “We lost five seniors from last spring, and all of them played a lot of innings for us over the last four years,” Leischner said. “Bryce Eilers, Blake Marr, Tyler Minor, Brock Reid and Cale Ciesler will be missed. Wyatt Mahoney would have been a big piece this year after a good sophomore season on the mound, but a season-ending injury has him sidelined. However, he figures to be a large part of next year’s team.” Cade Privia is coming back after a good year on the
mound last year and figures to be key to the Bluejays’ pitching staff. Aaron Suiter, Jake Shannon, Ryan Bettis and Bryton Butler all will pitch some innings as well. “We will look to Cade Privia and Cole Chalmers to continue their success at the plate to anchor our offense,” Leischner said. “We are also looking for Jake Shannon and Bryton Butler to provide some pop to the middle of our lineup.” Cole Chalmers, Anthony Hale, Blake McDaniel and Dane DeGroot all are projected to play significant innings in the outfield. Jack Gurnsey, Aaron Suiter and Drew DeGroot will compete for innings at third base. Cade Privia will play at shortstop when he is not on the mound. When he’s not pitching, freshman Ryan Bettis and Mitchel Horn will compete for innings. Bryton Butler looks to anchor second base, with Ryan Bettis and Mitchel Horn also competing for
that spot. Jake Shannon looks to lock down first base. Dane DeGroot and Blake McDaniel will catch significant innings this year. Senior Alex Berk will compete for at-bats in the DH role, along with Ryan Bettis and Bryton Butler. “Our team will be young and inexperienced for the most part,” Leischner said. “We only have two seniors this year. We will need to make the routine play defensively and move the baseball offensively to be successful this year. “Our eagerness to improve, and our team’s ability to be coached is something that we can build off of. Staying healthy this year will be key to having success. We have had a great start to practice, and our guys are getting better every day. While we have lost a lot from last year, I think this team can surprise people as long as they stay with the process and compete for all seven innings every game.”

PORTA/A-C CENTRAL softball Tough pitching and solid hitting will make the PORTA/A-C Central softball team tough to beat this season. “Pitching and hitting will keep us in games and carry us to many victories,” said Shelby Kinney, entering her eighth season as head coach. “Defense will be a big factor for us as we work through the first few games to find the best lineup.” The Lady Jays return a wealth of starters from a team that finished 17-8 and won the Sangamo Conference championship last year. They include: pitchers Addy McClure and Amber Teimeyer; juniors Jaydn
Jiannoni, Macy Schnapp and Alivia Ernst; and seniors Emma Stone and Allison Roberts. Key newcomers include freshman Erin Wallace and sophomores Maelyn Weatherby and Abby Dawson. PORTA/A-C Central lost Taylor Danner, Hannah Carlock and Kassidy Johnson from last year’s team. Pitcher Addy McClure is back after recording 10 victories last season. She finished with an earned run average of 2.312, and struck out 80 batters. Amber Teimeyer also returns after going 6-2 in the circle last season. She struck out 38 in 39 innings of work last year, finishing with a 2.314 ERA.
The Lady Jays have plenty of hitting back, too. Key returning hitters include Alivia Ernst (.443, 4 HR) and Addy McClure (.440, 33 hits). There are a few spots open in the lineup, and those won’t be filled until the season finally begins. “With the loss of Danner, Carlock and Johnson, there are a few holes for us to fill on both sides of the ball,” Kinney said. “The girls have been working hard these first two weeks of practice, trying to prove they deserve a spot on the opening day lineup card. Their hard work has made it impossible to make definite decisions on the starting nine.”
