Greetings from the Village!
As the Mayor of Glen Carbon, I am delighted to engage with so many residents and business owners on a daily basis. Working together on various community initiatives that highlight what makes our community unique, is truly a pleasure.
Glen Carbon is a vibrant and safe Village where residents take great pride in their hometown. Our blend of historic neighborhoods and exciting new developments provides diverse options for living, working, and enjoying life. We boast wonderful parks, an extensive trail system, and a variety of annual events. These include a Father’s Day Weekend Homecoming with carnival rides, a popular fall car show held at Schon Park, and a festive lighted holiday parade down Main Street. Additionally, our local Heritage Museum, library, and senior/community center regularly host a variety of events that appeal to many interests. The Glen Carbon Police Department
is a proactive department with strong ties to the community
Submitted by Village of Glen Carbon
With twenty-eight sworn officers and fourteen full-time civilian employees, it is a rapidly developing department. In addition to conventional police services such as patrol and investigations, the department is an ILEAS and Major Case Squad participant.
Chief Todd Link places great value on education, training, and skill development. Officers are encouraged to attend in-service and regional training events, and to develop specialized skills. Many officers and telecommunicators are certified academy instructors, teaching new officers and telecommunicators throughout the region.
As a police agency, The Glen
Carbon Police Department takes a balanced approach to policing, with a focus on both proactive police work and community-oriented policing. To address community concerns, they have created four Business District officer positions, as well as establishing a Nuisance Abatement officer position to address quality of life issues in our Village. In 2022, the department was awarded the COPS grant through the U.S. Department of Justice to fund two additional police officers for this Business District Program. Additionally, as part of the strategic efforts to combat crime, the Village placed License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras along various roadways throughout the Village.

The Edwardsville Municipal Band has been around since back then, providing free entertainment to all who attend. Most performances are at the Cleaon Etzkorn Bandstand, which stands in the downtown area right next to the Edwardsville Public Library.
and offering a fantastic atmosphere.
The diverse Edwardsville bar scene is another great way to discover and enjoy local artists. Live musical entertainment is also offered at bars outside of downtown, such as Global Brew Tap House, 1933 House of Bourbon, and Oaxaca. The weekends are when most of the live entertainment is offered, naturally, but there are also plenty of afternoons and nights during the week with musical events as well.
The Wildey Theater is another Edwardsville venue that brings music, as well as shows and movies to the area. Located in downtown Edwardsville, the old style theater is a can’t miss attraction, teeming with history
Some local restaurants also offer live music as well. 1818 Chophouse, Viva la Fiesta, and Mousalli’s Prime have great food and service to pair with the enjoyment of local musical artists.
Whether you are looking for a band concert in the park, a hard rock performance in a bar, or a Johnny Cash Tribute band in an old theater, Edwardsville has a place in its music scene for you.
Welcome to the MCT Trails
Spanning more than 135 miles and connecting twenty communities, the 12 bikeways in the MCT Trails system, form one of the most extensive and interconnected trail networks in the country. Developed, owned, and maintained by the Madison County Transit District (MCT), the scenic MCT Trails have transformed Madison County, Illinois into a haven for bicyclists, runners, walkers, and nature lovers. Running through and alongside a variety of natural landscapes – prairies, forests, lakes, the bluff-line and even the Mississippi River – the MCT Trails are linear parks, comprising nearly 1,600 acres of greenspace.
Located on former rail corridors, the MCT Trails are considered Class I bikeways, separated from the road –and with 48 bridges and 22 tunnels there are few at-grade crossings for trailgoers. The MCT Trails story began in January of 1993, when MCT received permissive authority from the State of Illinois to acquire, develop, and operate bikeways. Since that time, MCT has invested more than $50 million to preserve these vital transportation corridors and construct this one-of-a-kind community asset, the MCT Trails system.

Celebrating Glen Carbon: Calendar of Events
Submitted by Village of Glen Carbon
Glen Carbon is a community that embraces growth while cherishing its rich historical roots as a former coal mining town. Planning for the future while maintaining a deep respect for its past allows the Village to evolve, celebrating both its heritage and future possibilities. During the calendar year, this close-knit community offers a lot of activities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy, with ways to get involved and celebrate Glen Carbon.
One of the highlights in the Village is the Easter Egg Hunt at Schon Park, a beloved tradition that is organized by the Village and supported by local businesses. With the help of local sponsors, larger prizes are donated and then tickets are hidden in select eggs, adding an extra layer of excitement for children and families alike. The entire community gets involved, from the Fire District to the Police Department and neighboring church, St. James, assists with the egg stuffing and distribution.
Father’s Day weekend brings the community Glen Carbon Homecoming, featuring a great mix of food, drinks, carnival rides, a
parade, 5k race and live music. This 2-day event is a true testament to the power of the Village’s community spirit. It’s a special time when neighbors, family and friends come together to create lasting memories and year after year, businesses and organizations step- up to help sponsor the event.
Other annual favorites include a Kicks on 66 Car Show featuring hundreds of vehicles, Goat Yoga (by Southern Illinois Goat Yoga) at Schon Park, and a Lighted Christmas Parade on Main Street in Glen Carbon. The parade is organized each year by the Village’s Fire Department, and ends with food, a bounce house and Santa at the Fire Station. All of the events offer a little something for everyone.
The Glen Carbon Heritage Museum also plays a key role, hosting the Heritage Winter Market complete with shopping, carolers, and a festive tree lighting ceremony, adding to the Village’s holiday offerings. Cabin Day, Ghosts of Glen, and Glenfestival of Trees also take place within the Village on an annual basis.

RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Sending your child off to college can be a difficult experience. It is tough to know what you need to do to prepare them and yourself.
Thankfully, modern communication and online resources have made this transition for students and parents much easier. You no longer have to be in the dark, wondering when the next bill is coming in, or how your child is doing.
The university hosts an on demand webinar series called SIUE Live. This series is live on Mondays at 7 p.m. and includes information on academic advising, campus living, and much more. If you can’t catch it on Monday evenings, the recordings are available online.
SIUE hosts a mandatory New Student Orientation for first year students prior to their first semester. Family members are welcomed to attend as well.
announcements. The Alestle, the school newspaper, is another free resource to keep you up to date with all things SIUE.
An important thing for parents is knowing their kids are safe. SIUE is ranked as one of the safest campuses nationally. Edwardsville was ranked third in the top 15 safest and affordable cities in the United States according to GoBankingRates.
During the school year, Homecoming and Family Weekend are the perfect time to come and visit your student. This weekend has activities for everyone capped off by the tailgate and homecoming soccer game at Ralph Korte stadium.
For day to day news about SIUE, you can sign up for the SIUE Family Connection. It has campus news and
The e-alert system has been used to connect all SIUE students and staff, alerting them of emergencies. This system can quickly inform everyone of the dangers and what to do in response.
A key thing to remember about sending your child off to school is to let them be independent, but to also not be afraid to stay in touch. Let your kid be themselves and grow on their own, but still call them to check on them. Research tells us that a good support system makes a big difference in the ability and health of students.
SIUE’s resources for parents allows them to aid their child in the transition to college life, helping them to grow and thrive. Parents of SIUE students can leave after move in day feeling that their child is safe and well prepared for the next chapter of their lives.
FREE STUFF TO DO
There are plenty of places to go and things to do in Edwardsville that are very cheap, and many cost nothing at all.

Spread throughout town is an array of paved paths, used for travel, exercise, and nature observation. These are known as the Madison County Transit Trails, a collection of old railway lines that have been repurposed into 138 miles of multi-use paths.
From these paths you can get to many different places, both in Edwardsville and in the entirety of Madison County. If you want to enjoy some fresh
air, but don’t want to go on a long walk or bike ride, then Edwardsville’s wide array of public parks will surely satisfy.

Situated in the heart of downtown, City Park is home to seating areas, the Cleaon Etzkorn bandstand, and the Edwardsville Public Library. The library is another great place to spend some time, whether you are studying or just simply reading for pleasure.
City Plaza, Hotz Park, Lusk Park, and West End Service Station offer nice outdoor views and interesting historical information. There are two other places in town for those who like learning about the past, the Benjamin Stephenson House and Madison County
Historical Society Museum.
If you have children, the different parks should have plenty of amusement for them. But if they are in the mood for something different, the Edwardsville Children’s Museum is the perfect place. There are affordable day rates and memberships offered, and the kids will be engaged in safe, fun activities.
There are fun things to do in the downtown area throughout the year. The Wildey Theater shows great movies for $3 admission throughout the year.
There are also free musical performances at the Cleaon Etzkorn bandstand. The Land of Goshen Community Market takes over downtown Saturday mornings May through October. It offers a great space to appreciate local art and products.

THE GLEN CARBON HERITAGE MUSEUM HOSTS A VARIETY OF EVENTS ANNUALLY
Throughout the year, Glen Carbon offers different presentations to the community and most of the time, the events are free to attend. For example, museum coordinator Samantha Doolin gives wonderful presentations at the museum or the Glen Carbon library on topics like historic homes or early settlements. She also schedules multiple guest lecturers annually and is a wealth of knowledge about the Glen Carbon community.
GOAT YOGA OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS is a popular event in the fall. All levels of yoga are welcome, and there is nothing more calming than snuggling with miniature goats while practicing yoga breathing and poses. Tickets for the event are always available through Goat Yoga of Southern Illinois’ Eventbrite page.
CABIN DAY AT THE YANDA CABIN is another annual event that occurs the first Saturday in October. Live demonstrations, food, drinks, live music and vendors will be scattered within the Cabin walls and on its lawn. This event is included in the Madison County Historical Society’s Living History Days Festival, which you can learn more about on their website. The blacksmith, Giant Dwarf Forge, will share techniques with the crowd and Southern Illinois Artisan Guild will be there for wool spinning, chair caning, embroidery and more. It’s a great time to stop by to shop and learn about the Village’s early years.
Everyone’s favorite fundraising event for the museum, GHOSTS OF GLEN, also happens in October. This is a partnership event with the Glen Carbon Library
that incorporates spooky stories, a lot of Glen Carbon history, and haunted locations. This is a ticketed event through Eventbrite that typically sells out.
GLENFESTIVAL OF
TREES is an opportunity for local clubs, businesses, organizations, and individuals to decorate a tree or wreath and display them inside the Heritage Museum. Guests come in and vote for their favorites, and winners from each category get a cash prize. More information can be found online at www. glencarbonil.gov in the fall. There are evening hours on Saturdays through December so that everyone has a chance to visit the museum at night and enjoy the magical holiday lights. The museum will also host a winter festival with shopping, a holiday tree lighting, carolers and more.
From elementary school tours to senior group presentations, the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum is bustling with a variety of activities, all year long.
Open Monday – Thursday from 9 am – 3 pm and Saturdays from 9 am – 3 pm, stop by the museum to see its exhibits and follow the museum page on Facebook for regular updates.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is the community’s obvious crown jewel for higher education, and positive paths to learning start here with the youngest students.
Covering 185 square miles, Edwardsville’s school District 7 includes rural areas, small towns and suburban communities. Edwardsville and Glen Carbon are the largest municipalities in the district.
For 2022-23, District 7 had approximately 7,400 students routed through 13 buildings: six primary elementary facilities, four intermediate elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one alternative high

school and the N.O. Nelson Complex.
The school mascot is the Tiger. The main high school building is located at 6161 Center Grove Drive, while its football stadium and many athletic fields are across the street to the south.
Growth in recent years has been exponential. After a building referendum in 2007, District 7 built three new elementary schools, which opened by fall of 2008.

Even with all these delicious, diverse options, we all sometimes just want a burger and fries. Well Edwardsville isn’t lacking in that department either. Sneaky’s Bar and Burger Joint, as well as the Hi-Pointe Drive-In serve this American classic.

Barbecue is represented as well. Some of the best brisket and pulled pork you have ever had can be found at Doc’s Smokehouse and Edley’s Barbecue. If meat isn’t your forte, Clean Eatz, Crazy Bowls & Wraps, and Source Juicery have vegan food options.
What about high class dining, maybe for a company lunch or a dinner date? Try out one of the 1818 locations, the formerly mentioned serving seafood or the other, a steakhouse. Mousalli’s Prime, Cleveland-Heath, and Brick & Bramble also offer great menus sure to impress whoever you are taking out.
Obviously the Edwardsville area has breakfast covered too. Try a nice brunch at Twisted Biscuit Brunch Co., Golden Oak Pancake House, and Cafe Birdie. Diner style breakfasts at North Main Diner and Sgt. Peppers are great after a night out or a Sunday morning church service.
For a cup of tea or coffee on the way to work with food options as well, try out Teaspoons Cafe, Sacred Grounds Cafe, or Goshen Coffee Roasters.
