Recently announced Grammy nominee Michael Cleveland and band, Flamekeeper, will headline the popular bluegrass concert, occurring just one week before the 62nd

The Harman Family Bluegrass Band and Friends will take the Ann Whitney Olin Theatre stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Lewis and Clark Community College’s Hatheway Cultural Center, in Godfrey. Of course the Harman Family Bluegrass Band will perform at the annual concert, too, and all the musicians will come together on stage. Cleveland’s album, “Tall Fiddler,” is among the nominees in the Best Bluegrass Album category of the Grammys, which airs Sunday, Jan. 26. The album features

Flamekeeper, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tommy Emmanuel, Bela Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Dan Tyminski, Del McCoury, and The Travelin’ McCourys. Hailing from Indiana, the multiple award-winning Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper is made up of Cleveland on fiddle, Josh Richards on guitar, Nathan Livers on mandolin, Jasiah Shrode on banjo and Tyler Griffith on bass. Group of the Year. Cleveland is an IBMA 12-time Fiddle Player of the Year. The star fiddler brings dynamic traditional bluegrass to the stage with Flamekeeper, in shows that leave audiences talking. Cleveland and his talented band present a program of tight vocal trios and duos, blistering instrumentals and fiddleand-banjo duets that echo bluegrass’ firstgeneration of stars. And the stellar musicians round out their show with wit and humor, easily interacting with a crowd. Cleveland began playing fiddle at age 4 and made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a guest of Alison Krauss, who also played with Mike Harman, the leader of the family group. In fact, Krauss is a Harman protégé. Over the years, Cleveland has appeared with several bluegrass legends, including Bill Monroe, Jim and Jesse, and Ralph Stanley. “We’ve been friends for about twenty or thirty years,” recalled Harman’s wife, Stacy. “He’s been on the Harmans’ CD and we’ve performed with other people at

festivals, and when Mike played with Alison. Performing all over and a long time, you get to know people.” Like Cleveland, Flamekeeper members also have played music most of their lives. Livers’ grandpa played a claw-hammer banjo to the turntable sounds of Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. Inspired by Monroe’s mandolin style, Livers picked up the instrument at age 10. He learned a few chords and melodies from his father, Bill Livers, for whom he credits as the driving force behind his learning to play. Richards’ earliest influences were his father, Steve, and brother, Jason, who taught him how to play and sing bluegrass music. Griffith’s father is an accomplished pianist and Griffith’s mother and uncle were part of a family bluegrass band that his grandfather managed in the 1970s. Although he sticks to the upright bass with Flamekeeper, he also plays guitar,

mandolin, trumpet and piano. His influences from the bass world include Barry Bales and Edgar Meyer. Shrode began learning to play several instruments at age 11. Although he’s quite proficient on guitar and mandolin, banjo has been his first love. With the always-sell-out Harman Family Bluegrass Band and Friends concert quickly approaching, Mike Harman said tickets still remain for the show. The Harman Family Bluegrass Band includes first- and second-generation musicians with deep musical roots dating back to 1975. The group includes Harman, his sister Lori Harman, and his sons, Mark, Jeff, John. EDWARDSVILLE — “Laissez les bon temps roulez” to those of you who have had a chance to spend time in New Orleans (or brush up on your French somewhere). If you’ve never been to the “Big Easy,” or it’s been awhile, Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill gives you a taste of NOLA, not only with Gulf Shores’ food, but also the décor, atmosphere and music. When you walk in the door, you are greeted by a huge saltwater aquarium that separates the entrance to the bar area from the large dining room. And that bar! It looks like a nice place to sit and talk awhile, but more on Vicki that later. Bennington I stopped by Gulf Shores with a friend on a recent Sunday afternoon, and we decided to give some of the appetizers a try. My friend chose the Shoreline Sampler, a plate full of battered

shrimp, Malibu coconut shrimp, battered scallops and hand-cut onion rings, served with cocktail sauce, a sweet apricot sauce and a Cajun ranch. We both nibbled on it, and it was hard to decide which sauce tasted best with which appetizer. They were all good. Toasted lobster, shrimp and scallop ravioli with a wine sauce made with Cajun spices was my pick, and a nice take on the traditional St. Louis “pillows,” as I’ve always called them. Gulf Shores’ appetizers also include hand-cut calamari, Cajunsteamed mussels, fresh oysters, crab cakes, Creole-battered crawfish tails, and gator bites, marinated, then battered and fried, coated with a blend of Cajun seasoning and served with the Cajun ranch sauce. I like the sound of “N’Awlins” chicken gumbo, with chicken, andouille sausage, okra, onions and celery, combined with rice and a secret blend of seasonings, simmered slowly. Or how about Cajun lobster bisque? Fresh salads combine seafood, such as calamari, coconut shrimp, seared Cajun tuna or lobster, with your favorite type of lettuce or greens. Seafood taco choices are also extensive — cod, lobster and

shrimp, blackened mahi-mahi, calamari or gator! Similar choices are available in sandwich form, but if you aren’t feeling like seafood, a tried-and-true half-pound beef burger is there for the taking. Entrée choices get really interesting. Try the “Dump Dinner,” which is a traditional seafood boil dinner with shrimp, crab legs, mussels and andouille sausage, served with fresh red potatoes and corn on the cob, all seasoned with Creole spices. I had something similar to this at our last family beach vacation, when my niece and her husband made a seafood boil when it was their turn to make the evening dinner. It was a lot of work and lots of food, and they spread all the food on newspaper on top of a picnic table. I felt very “New Orleans-ish.” If Gulf Shore’s version is anything like that was, then it needs to be at the top of your list (and mine) to order next time. Make sure to come in really hungry. Other dinner selections include the oyster platter, a Bourbon Street combo with homemade jambalaya, andouille sausage, homemade crab cake, red beans and rice with coleslaw, shrimp and grits, Louisiana barbecue shrimp, blackened shrimp alfredo, ocean fish dishes, such as Parmesan-crusted grouper,

crab-stuffed haddock, and fish and chip choices that include tilapia and catfish — I remember that from New Orleans! And all the fish is hand-cut and hand-battered. If you come by on a Sunday, the brunch starts with a bloody Mary or mimosa. From there, try the oysters Benedict, with Gulf oysters battered with cornmeal atop an English muffin, poached eggs and Cajun Hollandaise sauce, which is served with potato wedges. That dish alone should get you in the door. Other brunch specials are steak frittata, eggs Chesapeake, which is similar to oysters Benedict, except it includes homemade blue crab cakes, or … you can try shrimp and lobster quiche, with fresh spinach, roasted red peppers, shrimp and lobster mixed with fresh eggs and a blend of cheeses. Not that I had room for any kind of dessert, but you could always take it home. The tempting menu lists a bread pudding, fruit cobblers,

Key lime pie, of course, triple chocolate cake, beignets, which I want to order just so I can say the name, and a banana pudding cheesecake. A list of specialty drinks includes mojito, Key lime martini, hurricane and Tropical Depression keeps the Gulf theme going. And as I said before, the bar looks like a nice place to sit and visit — maybe try something fancy to drink after dinner. Gulf Shores also provides catering. The restaurant is located at 215 Harvard Drive in Edwardsville, with a second location (which actually opened first) at 12528 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur, Missouri. EAST ALTON — An Alton Middle School teacher took her fashion sense to Bohemian Road Boutique, a new specialty retailer at Eastgate Plaza. “I’ve always had a love of clothes,” said Kayla Logan, of East Alton. “My teacher friends ask me, ‘Do you ever wear an outfit more than once in a school year?’” Logan said. “It’s business casual here, you can wear these clothes to work, be comfortable and still look good. I love texture in material, everything is soft.” Bohemian Road Boutique specializes in fashion coupled with comfort for creative active wear with texture in natural fabrics, including tops, sweaters, business casual dresses,

jeans and more, in sizes ranging from small to 3X. Bohemian Road Boutique recently featured its clothing in Hearst Midwest Media Group’s New Year, New You Expo’s fashion show last Saturday at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Vadalabene Center. The event was powered by On The Edge of the Weekend, The Intelligencer and Alton’s The Telegraph, all under the umbrella of parent company Hearst Midwest Media. Logan might wear the same top twice, but never paired with an item with which she together already wore. She might wear a top long or tie up the same top with something different. “But always with different shoes,” she said. Logan teaches autistic

students in grades sixth through eighth in the Alton school district, but couldn’t resist bringing her shop to a retail fashion desert in Madison County. “There was nothing around here, in East Alton, for cute and affordable women’s clothing,” noted Logan, who quietly opened Bohemian Road Boutique Dec. 7 at Eastgate, a historic strip mall that has become a destination for retail and entertainment under the ownership and renovation of Todd and Julia Kennedy. “It’s going really well, overwhelming in a positive way, with a lot of support, so far,” Logan said. “It’s just great to be in a location and a community that supports small businesses.” The boutique carries more than women’s wear.

The slime trend among tweens and younger is all the rage and the youngster, Sunnie, makes slime of all the colors of the rainbow using non-toxic glue, laundry detergent and glitter. Sunnie’s slime is packaged in two different sizes. Ronan Farrow among nominees for book critic prizes NEW YORK (AP) — Ronan Farrow has already won a Pulitzer Prize and George Polk Award for his reporting on Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement. Now he's up for a literary honor, a National Book Critics Circle award. Farrow was among the nominees announced this weekend by the NBCC. His "Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators," which tracks his reporting on allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Weinstein, is a finalist in autobiography. Critics also nominated Chanel Miller's "Know My Name," the acclaimed memoir by the woman sexually assaulted by Stanford University student Brock Turner. The NBCC announced five nominees in each of six competitive categories, from fiction to poetry to criticism. Winners will be announced March 12. Other finalists include Colson Whitehead's "The Nickel Boys" and Edwidge Danticat's "Everything Inside" in fiction, Lydia Davis' "Essays One" for criticism and George Packer's "Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century" for biography. The NBCC announced three additional prizes. Sarah Broom's memoir "The Yellow House," winner of a National Book Award for nonfiction last fall, received the John Leonard Prize for best first book. The New Yorker's Katy Waldman was awarded the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing and the poet-novelist Naomi Shibab Nye was given the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award. Founded in 1974, the NBCC has more than 700 members from around the country.

‘Little Women’ all about perspective

I was only 75% of the way through the “Little Women” audio book, narrated by Christina Ricci, when I went to see the newest movie version. I was passed being alarmed about spoilers for the Civil War-era story. It’s simply my own fault for not having read such a classic American novel before now. The latest incarnation of “Little Women” also is the next film from writer-director Greta Gerwig since her powerhouse breakthrough with “Lady Bird” two years ago. She brings back her muse, Saoirse Ronan, and two of the world’s biggest stars to boot (Meryl Streep and Emma Watson), which did nothing to diminish high expectations. In fact, I like it very much and will review it highly for you. It’s far superior to the old-Hollywood version in which Katharine Hepburn pretends to

play a teenage Jo. Charming readers for generations, Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” is a coming-of-age novel set as four sisters of the March family move through adolescence into adulthood and face all the crises that come along with it. Each is indelibly imbued with a distinct personality and the quartet are as well-rounded a foursome as one could hope to encounter. Massachusetts is the backdrop for the Marches’ most precious years during the entirety of the “War Between the States,” when their father (Bob Odenkirk) is away serving as a chaplain for the Union Army. The March girls are left to be reared solely by their mother, Marmee (Laura Dern, who does a remarkable job). Meg (Watson), the oldest, is known for her beauty, her acting talent and, as first-born, the role she takes making her sisters fall in line when it comes to being proper ladies in an age when, alas, by today’s standards, the gender stereotypes are hard line and oppressive.

Meg’s biggest task is to reign in dear Jo (Ronan), one year her junior but not calm, couth or coquettish, which makes Jo seem nothing less than an independent person and more like a person bent, for the sake of being herself, on being different. Jo has been viewed by many readers of the book, over the years, as somewhat of a main protagonist though the narrative is truly an ensemble piece. This critic would echo th main-protagonist sentiment, especially as deftly as Jo is portrayed by “Lady Bird” Ronan. The younger March sisters, Amy (Florence Pugh) and Beth (Eliza Scanlen), respectively, are the vain and the humble members of the family. Amy constantly needs to fit in with other girls. She’s bonkers for the gentlemen callers she receives later in the story and, for her, only the finest things will do. Beth, a homebody, is tethered to the March home’s sunny window and the piano bench, content to do away with her days working hard, isolating and playing music. Joining the girls as

a secondary cast, are old Mr. Laurence (Chris Cooper), who’s their wealthy next-door neighbor/benefactor, and his grandson, Laurie (Timothée Chalamet, another Gerwig repertory player), as Jo’s bestie and the entire March clan’s dear friend. Gerwig’s version, as I now recognize it, of “Little Women” differs in perspective from Alcott’s story. In Gerwig’s, the storyline of Jo is the most observed and it places her squarely as the family’s heroine. The timeline also is far less linear. The movie’s timeframe bounces rapidly between the sisters’ teenage years to their lower 20s. It took me a while to catch on to this shift, at the beginning, but Gerwig’s choice was a pretty good one in this respect. The timeless look at gender is one that “Little Women” is famous for, but also I like how poverty and class politics are explored in this 2019 update. ”Little Women” runs 135 minutes and is rated PG for thematic elements and brief smoking. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

Movie filmed in Hartford showing Friday

HARTFORD — A showing of the horror movie “Claimed,” filmed last summer in Hartford, happens this weekend. The movie at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Lewis and Clark Historic Site in Hartford. The historical fiction film, set in 1587, is based on the true story of English colonists who went missing within three years of settling in America. Elle Mercurio, the film’s writer and director, said the story and drug addiction have a lot in common. She said the disappearance of the colonists serves as a metaphor for the hundreds of thousands of heroin addicts who “disappear” in the U.S. every day. “The movie and the cause parallel with each other because, like those 116 colonists, they disappeared and no one knew,” she explained in October. “ In 2017, 700,000 people died from opiate related deaths. All of these people are disappearing and the general public doesn’t really seem to understand how bad it is.” Mercurio, of Florissant, is a recovering heroin addict of

nine years. She said she wrote the story while in college about five years ago, but then tucked it away in a drawer. She was challenged to turn the story into a film, and filming began June 1 in Hartford near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. There were 252 people involved in the production of the film. While she plans to enter her film in competitions and film festivals, Mercurio said she is not looking to profit if they succeed in conveying her message. Instead, she intends to give all proceeds to organizations that work to bring awareness to addiction and recovery. She also intends to accept donations toward the cause at the film’s premiers. Review: ‘Prized Girl’ has complex, well-drawn characters

“The Prized Girl: a Novel,” Dutton, by Amy K. Green At age 14, Jenny finally had her fill of beauty pageants. She would no longer allow her mother to paint her face with makeup, dress her in age-inappropriate outfits and drag her to those hideous competitions several times a month. “The Prized Girl” of Amy K. Green’s title just wanted to know what it would be like to shed her beauty queen image and be a normal eighth-grade student. She never got the chance. As Green’s debut novel opens, Jenny is already dead — raped, stabbed and discarded in the woods not far from her family home in a small New England town. Police promptly arrest a simple-minded, middle-age man who had been obsessed with the girl, attending most of her pageants and exchanging notes with her. To Vi r g i n i a , J e n n y ’ s unemployed, alcoholaddicted, 20-something h a l f - s i s t e r, t h e p o l i c e investigation looks superficial, the suspect too convenient. So she worms her way into the case by befriending the lead detective. Green, a screenwriting and film production p ro f e s s i o n a l , t e l l s h e r complex tale in two alternating narratives. One, a series of flashbacks written in the third person, follows Jenny as her rebelliousness and anger at her family grows, making her increasingly reckless. The other, narrated by Virginia, shows her methodically identifying a series of other

possible killers, sometimes by working with the detective and other times by striking out on her own. Together, the two accounts gradually reveal a high degree of dysfunction in Jenny’s family, a terrible secret that has haunted Virginia for years and an evil that has stalked the little town’s teenage girls for a generation. The characters — especially the two sisters, their parents, Jenny’s boyfriend and the detective — are complex and well-

d r a w n . A n d Vi rg i n i a ’ s relentless search for the beauty queen’s killer is filled with stunning twists and a shocking surprise ending. The author’s only misstep comes toward the end when she unnecessarily ties up loose ends by having several characters fill each other in on details that have eluded them — but that readers already know. But this shouldn’t deter readers from appreciating a psychological thriller that is otherwise expertly told in a crisp, fastpaced style.

Panelist Abby Huntsman says she’s leaving ‘The View’

NEW YORK (AP) — Abby Huntsman, a panelist on ABC’s daytime talk show “The View,” said Monday she’s leaving to help run her father’s campaign for governor of Utah and spend more time with her family. Huntsman joined the show in September 2018 and her departure will leave Meghan McCain as the show’s only real conservative voice. While “The View” features celebrity guests, it is becoming best known for its fiery political talk and is an important stop for presidential candidates looking to reach an audience dominated by women. Jon Huntsman announced in November that he would be seeking a third term as Utah governor, although he hasn’t done that job for a decade. He’s spent time as U.S. ambassador to Russia in the interim. He asked his daughter to be a senior adviser to the campaign. “I told my dad, if ‘The View’ taught me anything, it taught me how to fight,” Huntsman said. Her last day will be Friday.
