EDWARDSVILLE — Three years ago, Ruby Leigh Pearson neither sang nor played a lick of music, but in quick succession she’s won top awards for her talent. National fiddle-playing champion George Portz discovered Lit’l Miss Country, as she’s now known, when she was 9 years old, and she’s been playing his shows and superstars’ stages ever since. Edwardsville resident Gene Magruder is a fan and booked the up-and-coming recording artist for a show from 2-5

Pearson, actually recognized her talent, but he wasn’t sure if her singing was anything special since he never worked with professional musicians or any musician for that matter. He found out just how special his daughter sang when the pair went to a flea market looking for antiques. “When I was littler, I’d sing a play, but never thought I was good,” Ruby Leigh said to The Edge. “About two years later, I was 9, and my dad was working and playing country music and I started singing it — he looked pretty surprised,” she recalled. “I kept going and doing my thing, and this song came on and I said I really liked it. It was Guy Clark’s ‘Dublin Blues,’ and my dad said, ‘That’s really good.’” Turned out it was her dad’s favorite song, so she learned it for him. “I’d ask her what she was listening to and I told her, ‘Well, my music tells a story,’” he recalled. “She started listening to classic country, and said, ‘Daddy, I can hear the story, feel

it.’ Five minutes later, she started singing a way we never heard her sing.” Now Pearson manages his daughter’s fledgling professional career, which is off to a great start. Recently, Ruby Leigh played a pre-show with a three-hour set for Clint Black, in the Missouri Ozarks and last year, she made a guest appearance with Mickey Gilley in Grafton. She’s playing Grafton again, on Saturday, at the Hawg Pit, from 2 to 5 p.m. She’s also sang on stages with Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent, Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis. Her first big competition was St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright’s open karaoke contest, in which she placed third. Then she represented Missouri in American kids National Championship, singing in three categories — country, gospel and pop, in which she didn’t place, but she won gold in the country and gospel categories She won the Loretta Lynn “So You Think You Can Sing” online contest followed by the Dolly Parton’s Mountain Soul Vocal Competition in Sevierville, Tennessee, Parton’s hometown, out of thousands of entries. Next, she became only the third person handselected to represent the United States in the World Championships of Performing Arts, competed in country, gospel and pop, winning first for her age division in country music and silver in gospel performance. She then turned

She competed against 64 other countries in Long Beach, California. A fortuitous meeting with musical folks at a flea market really kicked Ruby Leigh’s career into high gear, though. “There was a group sitting on a hill, playing acoustically,” Ruby Leigh recalled. “I told my dad to look at them playing music. We kept walking and I told him I wondered if they’d let me sing — it was my hint to my dad to get over there and go tell them to let me sing. So I asked them, he came with me, and they let me. It was really kind of funny how it all happened.” The group ended up asking Ruby Leigh, of Foley, Missouri, to come to one of their shows, where she met Portz. “We went to their show, they let me sing and George told me to tell my dad to stick around, he’d like to talk to him,” she recounted. “He came over to us and introduced himself, said he was with the Friends of Bluegrass, and asked me how long I’d been singing. I said, ‘About three weeks.’” Portz also recommended to the youngster to learn an instrument. “He told me, ‘If no one plays anything, no one sings,’” she recalled. Thus, she took up the guitar. The only thing close she had up to that point was a

toy guitar. “I had little junker guitar from Walmart because every kid who walks by wants one,” she said. “I kind of beat around on it.” A member of Nashville’s first families, the Bradley Family, saw Ruby Leigh’s first video’s in which she sang a capella and sent the video to Nashville “guitar guru” George Gruhn who purportedly said, “That little girl needs an instrument in her hand.” Within one week she had a baby Martin in her hands. “It took about one week to learn my first song,” Ruby Leigh said. “When I first started, it hurt my fingers with the strings.” One year later, she started taking lessons with Doug Carson in St. Charles, Missouri. “I got better on my own, but he’s really the one who taught me the most that I know now,” she said. “Loretta Lynn is always my inspiration because she’s self-taught, just like me,” she noted, “and her story is really cool and very inspiring to me.” Portz, a four-time National “Open” Fiddle Champion comes from multigenerations of champion fiddle players, including his father, grandfather, and great grandmother. Portz started his career helping a little girl the same age as Ruby Leigh. “Her name is Alison Krauss, he taught

Ruby Leigh with Gruhn Guitars’ George Gruhn, of Nashville, Tennessee, who, when he heard her sing, sent the youngster a guitar before she even knew how to play an instrument. Gruhn, known as a “guitar guru,” has been a featured columnist for Vintage Guitar, Guitar Player, Pickin’, Frets, and Bluegrass Unlimited. (For The Edge)

Ruby Leigh Pearson performs with four-time National “Open” Fiddle Champion George Portz and the Friends of Bluegrass. Portz discovered Pearson when she was 9 years old after she went to a flea market with her dad, Casey Pearson, who’s her manager. Ruby Leigh sang impromptu with some folks there who invited her to one of their shows that Portz also attended. She sang at the show where Portz heard her perform. Portz won his first Illinois State Fiddling Championship in 1969. He also worked with superstar Alison Krauss, when she was 9 years old. Both she and Ruby Leigh sang “Delta Dawn” the first time they took the stage with Portz. (For The Edge)

SIUE’s Clark named finalist for prestigious Tufts Poetry Award

EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Tiana Clark, Department of English Language and Literature assistant professor, has been named one of five finalists in the prestigious 2020 Kate Tufts Discovery Award for her poetry book, “I Can’t Talk About the Trees Without the Blood.” The Kate Tufts Discovery Award is bestowed annually by Claremont Graduate University to honor a first book by a “poet of promise.” It is awarded in conjunction with the Kingsley Tufts Award, which is one of the world’s leading annual poetry awards for mid-career poets. “I am beyond honored to be a finalist for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award,” Clark said. “I bawled when I received the email,” she recalled. “It’s an amazing and validating feeling to be recognized for trusting my imagination.” This year’s five finalists for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award were selected by a panel of fellow poets from a pool of several hundred nominations submitted by individuals and publishers. The recipient of the award and its $10,000 prize will be announced later this month. “Trees will never be just trees,” Clark explained about why she wrote “I Can’t Talk About the Trees Without the Blood.” “They will also and always be a row of gallows from which black bodies once swung,” she said. “This is an image that I cannot escape, but one that I have learned to lean into as I delve into personal and public histories, explicating memories and muses around race, elegy, family and faith, by making and breaking forms, as well as probing mythology, literary history, my own ancestry and, yes, even Rihanna.” Clark said that she hopes this book and her next poetry collection, which investigates long poems with lyric swagger, will provide inspiration to her SIUE students. “I hope my work gives my students encouragement to be themselves on the page, to take creative risks and experiment with poetic form,” she said.

The scoop on ‘The Stuff’ and ‘Stranger Things’

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

This week’s movie review is going to be a little different. Rest assured, though, that I’ve spent the greater part of the last week or so justifying this to myself. The biggest current release is “The Call of the Wild” and I don’t get the appeal of Harrison Ford and a CGI dog. I did go and watch “Sonic the Hedgehog” for some reason. I won’t bother saying more about that. Instead, I’m going to tell you about an older title that I watched. Much older, came out in 1985, and I didn’t even realize it was a real movie until recently. Stick around for the ride and maybe you’ll find yourself on the same meandering drive down Memory Lane that seriously tickles my fancy today. Last summer, like millions of other Americans, I

continued to watch “Stranger Things” on Netflix with its third season of young teens battling Russians and otherworldly dangers in 1985 Indiana. I continue to find delight in dorky Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), superpowered Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the national treasure that is Police Chief Hopper (David Harbour). In season three, the two greatest additions yet to the series occurred: actress Maya Hawke as Robin and the setting of the Starcourt Mall. Starcourt revitalizes the mall concept for television in the same way that actual shopping malls were important to the 1980s, a decade I was just barely too young to fully appreciate at the time. At Starcourt Mall, long-shuttered storefronts came back. Wicks ‘n’ Sticks and Sam Goody and Waldenbooks lined the concourse, but for this movie nerd it was all about Starcourt Cinemas.

The Hawkins gang hits the classic mall theater for a sneak preview of “Day of the Dead” in “Stranger Things” season opener, but my favorite scene came late in the final episode when a full marquee is visible listing six other titles in release at the time. I geeked out over “Back to the Future,” “Fletch,” “Cocoon” and the oh-so-freaky “Return to Oz.” And there was “D.A.R.Y.L.,” a flick I sort of remembered about a childlike robot (Barret Oliver) that could play video games and scam ATMs. The last movie was an enigma to me. What was “The Stuff”? Could a real movie exist with this title that I’d never heard of? Surely the Duffer Brothers wouldn’t sneak some Easter egg like this in alongside all those other vintage hits! So Netflix rescued me again. Yes, it’s a real movie; I have a DVD that proves it. “The Stuff” is science fiction at its absolute worst (which

is still reliably watchable for this genre). And I watched it. Here’s what it’s all about. “The Stuff” is a slapstick sci-fi comedy about a dessert food that turns its consumers into zombie-like monsters that exist only to eat more and more of the calorie-free treat. The Stuff isn’t really food. It’s a candy-sweet alien mineral that seeps out of the ground and has its own animated motility and motives. When the ice cream industry gets worried about competition, they enlist corporate spy Mo Rutherford (a jittery Michael Moriarty, playing full Southern accent) to figure out what the secret is in making the goo America’s favorite new sensation. He encounters a cookie pitchman (Garrett Morris), a wary kid (Scott Bloom), Paul Sorvino and a metric ton of bad special effects as he gets to the bottom of the conspiracy to promote global takeover by

pint-size containers of what resembles a cross between vanilla yogurt and marshmallow fluff. One might suppose that the similarities to Steve McQueen’s first movie, “The Blob,” could make “The Stuff” a legend. I bet it just helped the 1988 remake get ushered into existence faster. This review might be 35 years late

and the movie might be trash, but God bless mall multiplexes (like the old Cottonwood Theatre in Glen Carbon), the films of our childhood(s), and the memories of them we made then and now. ”The Stuff” runs 86 minutes and is rated R for language, gory imagery, and suggestive content. I give this film one star out of four.

A scene from the third season of “Stranger Things” at its fictional Starcourt Mall. (Netflix|For The Edge)

The Ink House to host ‘Let’s Celebrate Together’ Grand Opening

The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — The Ink House Event Center, in the The Intelligencer’s former building, is officially open and hosting its grand opening from 6-11 p.m. Friday, March 6. Tickets are free and available to the public at www.eventbrite.com with a link at the Let’s Celebrate Together - The Ink House Grand Opening event’s Facebook page. The Ink House, at 117 N. Second St. in Downtown Edwardsville, is owned by Kristen Pfund, of Edwardsville, and Hannah Fink, of Glen Carbon. The open-house style celebration will feature appetizers from Sugarfire, live music by Midlife from 6-9 p.m. and a cash bar.

The Ink House Event Center will offer a balance of historical significance and contemporary charm in the heart of Downtown. The Ink House was previously known for decades as a place that housed creative writing and the printing production of Edwardsville’s newspaper, The Intelligencer, which relocated last summer to 116 N. Main St. Thus, the new upscale Ink House pays homage to the historic space in the names of its main event space, The Headliner, its lounge space, The Press Room, and women’s and men’s restrooms, The Gossip Column and The Sports Room, respectively. Visit www.inkhouseevents.com for more information.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Mi casa, su casa! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — Entering La Casa Mexicana’s friendly, authentic atmosphere, with archways, brick, tile, bright colors and private booths, you can’t help but feel cozy. Beginning with a great margarita sporting a perfectly salted rim (very important), and tasty salsa in which to dip our fresh, warm chips, we couldn’t have felt more at home. My husband’s LaCasa burrito entrée order was an Vicki 8-inch flour tortilla stuffed Bennington with shredded chicken (or you could choose seasoned ground beef), topped with savory burrito sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and shredded cheese. Served with rice and beans, it was a huge plateful of food. When it was all said and done, there wasn’t much left. Only a few crumbs remained. Enough said. Mine was the Camaron Yucatan — grilled, marinated shrimp cooked with bell peppers, onions, squash and zucchini. Served with salad, rice, a corn cake and guacamole. OK. This was a lot of food. It was one of the tastiest dishes I’ve had in a long time. I love squash and zucchini, and when they were mixed with the seasonings and the shrimp, the result was wonderful. The corn cake reminded me of a corn casserole my mom used to make, which made me like it even more. I am notorious for taking to-go boxes home, and this evening was no different. The next day, I had a nice little snack – or let’s call it brunch – and it was even better than the night before. Sitting in the fridge overnight often makes dishes like this even tastier as all the flavors have a chance to marinate even further. According to La Casa, Mexican cuisine is primarily a fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking with European - especially Spanish - elements that were added after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the 16th century. The staples are native foods, such as corn, beans, avocados, tomatoes and chili peppers, along with rice. And I ate every one of those staples in my dish. I would go back and have the same thing again. However, there are so many choices on the menu, it would seem like a shame not to give others a try. For instance, the “Chila Quiles” - corn

tortillas sautéed with chicken or beef tips and ranchero sauce, served with shredded cheese, rice, lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo. Fajabo (I love that word) is a combination of chicken and steak, grilled with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers, then topped with cilantro and queso fresco, served on a bed of rice with three corn or flour tortillas. Or you can order two steak or chicken kabobs charbroiled with bell peppers, zucchini, squash, onions and cherry tomatoes. Also served on a bed of rice. Paella (another pretty word) is grilled steak, chicken, shrimp and crab meat tossed with peppers, onions, tomatoes and rice. Chipotle chicken skewers are drizzled with chipotle sauce, resting on a bed of rice and served with a blend of grilled veggies. These are a small sampling of what’s on the menu, which also includes multiple selections of street tacos, chimichangas, vegetarian dishes, fajitas, seafood specialties, steak, burritos and enchiladas. I noticed there was a side order of deep-fried jalapeños available, which is one thing we always decline, simply because we have a sensitivity to too much spice — especially my husband — and my youngest daughter. That reminds me of a funny adventure we had at a Mexican restaurant in Texas, when she was about 5 years old. Somehow, during dinner at an authentic Mexican restaurant, she got a hold of a really spicy jalapeño. Her eyes opened wide, and she cried and cried. It took awhile before she could talk. When she did, she shook her finger at me and cried, “I don’t want no more jalapeno!” We have all since laughed at the story (herself included), though it wasn’t funny at the time. But many people love them. To each his own, and there are dozens of dishes to try without encountering the deadly jalapeño — unless you so choose. La Casa is open seven-days-a-week, located at 201 Harvard Drive in Edwardsville. There’s a second location at 1222 Central Park Drive in O’Fallon, Illinois. For more information, visit lacasamexicanatogo.com. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants, to chef conversations, new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas, questions or suggestions.

EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Department of Theater and Dance’s Kathryn Bentley, associate professor and Black Studies program director, has earned a 2020 Saint Louis Visionary Award in the Outstanding Working Artist category. The award celebrates Bentley’s acclaimed work in the arts, both at SIUE and in the community. “I am humbled to win this award,” Bentley said. “There are so many phenomenal women artists in St. Louis, so being recognized in this way is significant to me. “I am grateful to my fellow artists with whom I collaborate on a regular basis.” Bentley joined the SIUE Department of Theater and Dance in 2004 and has been

directing the Black Studies program since 2018. She also has served as the artistic director of SIUE’s Black Theatre Workshop since 2006. In addition to her work at SIUE, Bentley has performed and directed with numerous theater companies, regionally and nationally, most recently directing the 2019 Shakespeare in the Streets production of “Love at the River’s Edge” with Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. In 2018, she joined Bread and Roses Missouri as artistic director for the Workers Theater Co. and directed its first full-length production, “Jailbird,” last year. Review: Hailey Whitters continues to pursue ‘The Dream’

By RON HARRIS Associated Press

Hailey Whitters, “The Dream” (Pigasus) Hailey Whitters’ aptly-named new album, “The Dream,” puts the singer-songwriter’s continued career into focus as she chronicles the ever-elusive hunt for a hit, and more. If there is truth to be found in the lyrics, Whitters has been doing the country music hustle, earning writing credit on songs for others — like Martina McBride and Little Big Town — and searching for her own spark to take her to the next level. She lays it all bare here, inviting the listener to feel with her and for her. “Ten Year Town” is the vibe here, and that which likely mirrors something Whitters has yearned

to say. A little fame, waiting for a break, but wanting more. It’s a story of hard work and hope and Nashville dreams all wrapped into a little over three minutes that makes us feel the struggle. Whitters hits her sweet spot on “All the Cool Girls,” finding comfort in her high-note croon while examining the chasm between what to present and what to represent as a woman. Throughout her sophomore album Whitters comes across as a young but weathered soul, searching for something that will serve as the resolving note to her musical journey. She’ll be supporting the venerable Tanya Tucker on tour this year, looking to reap rewards only available to those who chase their dreams with resolve.

munity about pertinent health and wellness issues. “I have committed the last 20 years of my career to educating through theater,” Bentley said. “It’s important to me that I utilize the arts to impact change whenever I can. “There is not a more powerful way to effect change than through heart-centered interactions,” she continued. “Theater challenges us to go past the intellect and make personal connections to difficult topics.” Bentley will receive her Saint Louis Visionary Award during a ceremony held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 27, at the Sun Theatre, in Grand Center, at 3625 Grandel Square.
