Good science: Lecture series’ experts give key to understanding
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EDWARDSVILLE — One of the world’s leading theoretical physicists will command the Shaw Memorial Lecture at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as Arts and Issues’ final event of the season. Thanks to a partnership between SIUE’s Arts and Issues and the Department of Physics’ Shaw Memorial Lecture series, science gets the attention it deserves as part of the larger culture. The two programs joined forces in 2010, but the Shaw Memorial Lecture celebrates its 19th event with physicist Brian Greene, as he presents “Revealing the Universe - A Journey to the Frontier of Understanding” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at SIUE’s Morris University Center’s Meridian Ballroom. “We want the audience to have a deeper understanding of the complexity of the universe we live in,” said SIUE’s Jack Glassman, Department of Physics chairman and professor. “Most of us, including myself, even though I’m a physics professor, on a day-to-day basis are human beings, and there are certain concepts we take for granted. “Science is science and the goal is that people in general will understand science as a rational process to rational answers, and how science leads to more understanding and brings individuals more confidence in fields of science.” The Shaw Memorial Lecture series is named for former SIUE physics professor William Shaw, who taught at the university from 1959 to 1973 and died in 1977. His widow, now also deceased, endowed the lecture series program to memorialize Shaw, a founding professor of SIUE. “The field that Brian Greene works in, is unbelievably complicated and difficult to understand, even as a physicist, like, myself,” Glassman said. “The universe is not a straight

line or the linear thing that we think of on a day-to-day basis, it’s much more complicated than that. “These lectures ensure that the audience will understand when they leave the event. We want both professionals and people without a strong science background to come away knowing something new about the universe.” The Shaw Memorial lectures began in 1979, and are held consistently every two years, since 2000. In 2010, the Shaw Memorial Lecture committee, led by professor Tom Foster, partnered with the College of Arts and Sciences’ Arts and Issues, led by Grant Andree, to bring

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, March 12, 2020 • 5 Wo r l d - r e n o w n e d physicist Brian Greene, a bestselling author, recently celebrated the release of his newest book, “Until the End of Time,”a new exploration of the cosmos, deep time and humanity’s search for purpose. Greene takes the reader on a journey from the big bang to the end of time, exploring how lasting structures formed, how life and mind emerged, how humans grapple with existence and a longing for the eternal.
the Shaw lectures to a broader audience. “As soon as we saw that Brian Greene was available, the decision was immediate to book him,” Glassman recalled. “It was obvious. He’s on the very cutting edge of science and one of the finest science communicators.” Past guest lecturers include Guion Bluford, an American aerospace engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, who is the first African American and the second person of African descent to go to space; Mae Jemison, an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut, who became the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour; and, popular scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist, author and science communicator. Like Tyson, Greene has made several high-profile appearances as an expert, including eight times on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and cameos in “The Big Bang Theory,” a network television sitcom, and several Hollywood films, including “Frequency,” “Maze” and “The Last Mimzy.” Greene’s illustrated novella, “Icarus at the Edge of Time,” adapted for live symphonic presentation with an original score by Philip Glass, premiered at Lincoln Center and has been performed more than 50 times worldwide. His work for the stage “Light Falls” traces Einstein’s discovery of general relativity and features an original score by “House of Cards” composer Jeff Beal. Greene, a Harvard graduate, Rhodes Scholar and cofounder of the World Science Festival, is a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, as well

as the current director of Columbia’s Center for Theoretical Physics. He’s known for string theory and his groundbreaking discoveries. As a brief starter, string theory is a set of attempts to model four known fundamental interactions — gravitation, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force — together in one theory. “String theory is one of the most difficult branches of physics at moment,” Glassman noted. “He thinks in eleven spatial dimensions, we work in three dimensions, that’s hard enough for some of us. For him to take that sort of thing and make it accessible to those without strong math and physics background, takes a high level of talent as a communicator and a command of his own subject. “You can’t discuss such a subject at an accessible level unless you deeply understand it as a professional.” Greene, as a respected author, has hosted two Peabody and Emmy award-winning “NOVA” miniseries based on his books. He became known to the public through his books “The Elegant Universe,” “The Fabric of the Cosmos” and “The Hidden Reality,” which collectively have spent 65 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold more than two million copies worldwide. His newly released book is “Until The End of Time.” The Washington Post has described Greene as “the single best explainer of abstruse concepts in the world today.” “He’s a gifted physicist and a great communicator,” said Glassman, who has been with SIUE since 2004 and department chair since 2017. “I’m looking forward to it. The audience will come away with a more profound understanding of the complexities of the universe. “‘The Elegant Universe’ is almost twenty years old, it made a big splash,” Glassman said. “It’s on my desk right now.” The Shaw Memorial Lecture committee and physics department secretary Barb Jatcko are responsible for scheduling the lectures. Along with the Shaw Memorial Lecture endowment and Arts and Issues budget, SIUE’s graduate school contributes to these partnered programs, which also are supplemented by the Madison County Regional Office of Education. “They contribute funds to make this possible,” Glassman said, “and that kind of leverage is only possible by having these partnerships.“ Reach Jill Moon at 618-208-6448 and Twitter @jill_moon.

EXO launching patio this spring
EDWARDSVILLE — Since the singular EXO Lounge and Nail Bar launched last fall it’s drawn patrons from across the Midwest, founder Gina Gamblin said. “It is an emergence of cultures and a true destination,” she explained. “We are looking to expand locally and nationally.” EXO Lounge, open to the public, offers an elegant cocktail bar and EXO Nail Bar’s services include manicure, pedicure, restorative skin care and more — all in space designed carefully for a multi-sensory experience. “The lounge offers endless possibilities for fun and relaxation for men and women,” Gamblin, of Edwardsville, said. “It’s a place where women can come for a girls’ night or guys can grab a drink after a long day golfing,” she explained. “The outdoor patio, due to launch in this spring, will offer a relaxing vibe to enjoy a drink with friends.” The cocktail lounge and nail bar work in harmony, the latter offering manicures, pedicures, eyelash extensions, waxing services and more, the former a cozy, upscale, comfortable place to relax or gather for special occasions with friends and family.
The nail bar features European seating, from where clients can enjoy a cocktail or non-alcohol-containing beverage, each handmade and organic. EXO Nail Bar features iPads at each station, where a drink and a snack are at clients’ fingertips in a ventilated environment. Each station has installed a specialized ventilation system to filter nail service products. EXO Lounge serves seasonal organic cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine and coffee. During the week, happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. and features live music at its 157 Center complex in Edwardsville. EXO’s more than 8,000-square-feet of spa and lounge space was designed and constructed by Contegra Construction Co., based in Edwardsville. EXO Nail Bar’s renovation features elegant finishes, including recessed and vaulted ceilings, gold accented seating and ornate chandeliers, for a dazzling effect. Vibrant, patterned floor tiles complement the interior to enliven the atmosphere. The nail bar also features a state-of-the-art audiovisual system, which includes a video wall of multiple screens. EXO Lounge features warmer interior colors, including a bar top of black Cambria
quartz, rich velvet seating, black onyx-style flooring and a 2,000-square-foot outdoor patio space with fire pits. Seasonal fresh flowers, EXO’s signature fragrances, music and more create a soothing experience throughout the lounge and the nail bar. Other features include Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), which offer continuous insulation by design, allowing architects flexibility and the aesthetics required. EXO’s entry, with a white EIFS façade, has a seamless black metal roof, enclosed in champaign bronze metal panels and a glass curtain wall that floods natural light into the interior. a A massive chandelier hangs from the entryway’s 15-foot ceiling. “Contegra did a great job delivering on my vision,” Gamblin said, “effectively managing the budget and the work of subcontractors.” EXO Lounge designer Shannon Petrou Design, EXO Nail Bar designer Chris Grodeon and Ponto Solutions, which designed EXO’s audiovisual and multi-video wall, joined Contegra Construction on the project. Contegra Construction is one of the St. Louis region’s largest general contractors and serves a national customer base that includes industrial, institutional, municipal, medical, multi-family, office and retail projects. The company’s capabilities include building

VSalon takes the reins on Third Street
ALTON — Longtime stylist Marilyn Carroll allowed her business to be an incubator for the founder of up-and-coming VSalon, ahead of the new business’ move to its own space next year. “I approached Marilyn about availability, because VSalon’s building is undergoing a complete renovation, and she said, ‘Yes,’” said VSalon founder Valerie Baumann, of Alton, about starting the full-service VSalon in Carroll’s salon space, Third Street Hair Co., 119 W. Third St., in Downtown Alton, where the salon now is identified as VSalon. “I can build my brand, build my employees’ clientele base and get a head start on the future of VSalon,” Baumann, of Alton, explained. “We’re growing pretty rapidly. It would be amazing to just be able to pick up this successful business and replant it at its new location. I’m excited to get a head start in building my brand. “I’m fortunate because I feel like I’m two to three years ahead in my business because of Marilyn. She said I can use my business name here, and that sealed the deal for me.” Whether a cut or color, clients will get consistent high-quality service at VSalon, a salon for hair and makeup. “We’re a team at VSalon and if a client can’t make their scheduled appointment and reschedules with another stylist, they will get the same high-quality service, no matter the stylist,” Baumann explained. VSalon’s current team is made up of Baumann, Heather Pearson and Ashley Fisher. “In most salons, each operator is an individual business,” Baumann noted, “and I don’t know if there’s as much rapport or support among those working within that business model. Most operating in that model come to a salon, accommodate their clients and leave, go home. “ But VSalon pays hourly plus commission, gives daily one-on-one education and also pays for stylists to get advanced and continuing education. Pearson will attend next month’s industry show in Chicago, at VSalon’s expense. Baumann also has plans to take the VSalon team to a Las Vegas show. VSalon offers also offers perks such as incentives and monthly bonuses. “It’s mostly social media based,” Baumann said. “The more successful VSalon gets, the more
bonuses the stylists get.” VSalon’s brand building, even though it’s been a concept for a couple years, started approximately six months ago. “We’ve been growing so rapidly, by one new client a day,” Baumann said. Baumann’s faith also is a part of her business. “God is blessing my business,” she said. “We make prayer a part of our business and say a prayer every day before we open. We just ask the Lord to take over the business, our day and we incorporate that inspiration to start each day. “We invite God into our business,” Baumann said. “He is providing and we are thankful for it,” Along with her faith, Baumann also is proud of her employees. “I am so proud,” she said, “and proud of their skill set. “Not only are they extremely talented, but they‘re quick learners and hard workers,” she said. “I’m very blessed. I prayed to God to send me the most perfect people for my business and I’m so grateful.” Pearson, of Alton, became licensed five years ago and has been with VSalon for the last two years. Pearson achieved her next professional level with VSalon, as a level 10 stylist. She and Fisher are tapped to manage VSalon when it moves into its own commercial space. Fisher,

licensed for two years, is well on her way to meeting Pearson’s level of expertise, Baumann said. She will hire possibly one more stylist at VSalon’s current location, once other stylists build their clientele. Once VSalon moves to its new location, it will have at least four more positions available for hire. “There will be singular opportunities for stylists to learn more techniques in hair and also growing their business,” she said. “As a team, we are, just, very supportive, encouraging of one another,” she said. “We laugh all the time and, just, have so much fun in what we do. We’re very blessed to be able to call this our occupation, one that’s creative and artistic.” Baumann also is ahead of the curve, for 14 years exclusively using All Nutrient, a brand of organic, non-carcinogenic hair color. “It saves clients’ and stylists’ health and they have peace knowing I’ve been using that line for so long,” she said. Baumann started her career nearly 20 years ago. She’s been licensed in Illinois for 17 years, but practiced professionally while still a student of cosmetology. Baumann said Carroll has been integral to her brand, to her business leadership and confidence in becoming a business owner and leader. “I’ve learned a lot just from listening to Marilyn, when she talks about her long successful career,” said Baumann, a color specialist and stylist. “She’s told me a lot about her experiences when she was the number one salon in the area. “Experience is invaluable.” The like-minded stylists share a focus on cleanliness, a factor that drives destination salons. “We are so similar, demanding very high standards,” Baumann said about Carroll, who mirrors Baumann’s work ethic and expectations.
All About... • Thursday, March 12, 2020 • 13 “Not only in the way the salon looks, but how we carry ourselves in-house,” Baumann explained. “Our standards are exactly the same for how we run our business — she tells me that. She tells me I’m just like her, ‘If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean’.” VSalon offers locally homemade pastries, gourmet coffee and, being located adjacent to Carroll’s Chez Marilyn, drinks are available for purchase under the same roof as VSalon. VSalon’s brand is steeped in Baumann’s own cosmetology expertise and knowledge. Baumann’s approach to her business builds a foundation for consistent expertise and service across the board. Her apprenticeship program, incorporated in VSalon’s business model, ensures that VSalon stylists work gives consistent level of service, no matter which stylist with whom a client might be scheduled. VSalon’s apprentices are paid hourly along with tips. VSalon’s full-time stylists are commission-based and benefits include continuing education, advanced classes and opportunities to show their work through professional photo shoots of their personal clients, with whom VSalon schedules professional shoots each season. Next summer, in partnership with Frew’s Bridal and Formal Wear, also located in Downtown Alton, VSalon is spearheading a pair of photo shoots, one of bridal couture and one of bridal avant garde, with photographer Korin Fisher, of Korin Rochelle Photography. “She’s VSalon’s official photographer and a graphic designer,” Baumann noted. “She has amazing vision. VSalon is on its eleventh shoot. When we put our own looks out there, professionally, it gives us a completely different edge over most other salons. “We’re professionally photographing our custom looks and showing the area our talent, with real clients, putting out the

Pearson and Fisher will style their own shoots, for the first time, with Frew’s. “It’s whatever they want in design — hair and makeup — picking their own dresses from Frew’s, creating their own looks for a photo shoot for the first time,” Baumann explained. “I’m so excited to watch these professionals during an actual shoot, to see how they’ve learned to style a photo shoot, create, move and smooth in place for perfect photos. “It’s important education because, if you want to grow as a business, you have to market your own color, cuts and style, instead of marketing a tagged photo from Pinterest saying, ‘We can do that.’ “VSalon is always going to show our own work.” VSalon’s shoots are constantly updated on its website — www.vsalonbyvalerie.com — and social media accounts, Facebook and Instagram, each with in-salon looks each day. “I’ve thought about VSalon’s concept for at least a few years,” Baumann said. “Basically, the concept is to train — personally — each employee, teach them all I know about this industry, and establish that whoever walks into VSalon gets a high-quality look, no matter who they go
to. Baumann, along with her husband and business partner, Jerome Baumann, are parents to Bo, 6, Luke, 3, and Zoey, 1. The Baumanns also include their 13-year-old dog, Teddy, as part of their family. Valerie Baumann’s grandmother also was a stylist. “If it wasn’t for my grandmother, I wouldn’t be a hair stylist,” she said. “I owe everything to her.” VSalon accepts walk-ins Thursday through Saturday. Business hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. VSalon also can usually accommodate same day bookings. “It’s easy to get in,” Baumann said. ‘The Invisible Man’ leaves you cringing in a good way
By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge
Blumhouse Productions’ thrilling new release, “The Invisible Man,” has far less in common with the classic 1933 monster movie by Universal Studios, or the H.G. Wells’ source novel of the same name, than anyone involved in the making of the 2020 film would have you believe. This sci-fi movie is centrally about an invisible man’s victim. I went in expecting something along the lines of Kevin Bacon’s “Hollow Man” (now 20 years old!) and, while the tone was right, the effects are more streamlined and the message is ahead of anything we were watching in blissful ignorance at the turn of the last century. No, here our central character is Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), who’s a young woman trapped in a violent relationship with her scientist boyfriend, Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). In the opening scene, Cecilia flees from their bed late in the night after drugging Adrian and she sneaks out of the ultra-modern compound they call home. Her clumsiness has him dashing after her getaway car in the flick’s first of many “jumpscare” scenes. I was hooked early, especially with the flavor of how the construction of the long opening reminded me of “Sleeping with the Enemy” with Julia Roberts, a movie I had no business watching at the age I was. For the first two months since escaping Adrian, Cecilia lives with her sister’s (Harriet Dyer) cop friend (Aldis Hodge) and his daughter (Storm Reid) in the cop’s suburban home, far away from the lurking danger of her ex. Her melancholy and fear take a toll on her and she becomes something of an agoraphobe. She gets unexpected news of Adrian’s brutal suicide and learns of a behest he made to her in his will via Adrian’s lawyer brother (Michael Dorman). Both come only as mild shocks to Cecilia. Adrian was doing rash things to harm her psyche all along, so why should his end time be any different? But the suicide isn’t an end time, it’s a strategic end game. Gradually, and with seeming ease, Cecilia puts together that Adrian not only faked his death, but somehow also managed to find a way to turn himself, you guessed it, invisible. No one believes our poor heroine, save
Elisabeth Moss as Cecilia Kass in “The Invisible Man,” written and directed by Leigh Whannell. (Universal Pictures|For The Edge) for the audience because they see the camera trickery and sick jokes the invisible man plays on her. He hacks her email, ruins her job interview, terrorizes her sleep and drugs her during the day. What he doesn’t do is count on the fight Cecilia gives, to get her life back from this controlling maniac. She does so with a very good plan, despite being committed to an asylum mid-picture for some tragic misdeeds of Adrian’s for which she’s blamed. If I have one complaint about “The Invisible Man” it’s that the movie has 20 extra minutes tacked onto the back half that felt incredibly overplayed. Most movies go wrong at the ending (the greatest ideas have to have the right resolution in place first; satisfaction of the story demands it). In this case, the ending is adequate. Cecilia gets to stand up to the many forces hampering her independence and sanity, but those actions seem disingenuous insomuch as the plot relying on movie magic to somehow make them seem realistic. Despite this criticism, the movie had me cringing in a good way. “The Invisible Man” runs 124 minutes and is rated R for some strong bloody violence and language. I give this film three stars out of four.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Upscale, Fast and Delicious! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge
EDWARDSVILLE — Sandwiches are the most versatile and easy-to-eat foods for any meal, any occasion — in my opinion, anyway. Penn Station East Coast Subs in Edwardsville is a perfect example of somewhere to go when you want a lot of choices, but don’t have a lot of time, aren’t interested in a multiplecourse meal, yet you are really hungry. My turkey-bacon-ranch sandwich with added avocado hit the spot, and choices of breads make it Vicki easy to fit into specific diets Bennington you may or may not want to adhere to. Cold subs are great, but personally, I like to get mine hot off the grill, and it’s filling and satisfying without much fuss – and very little time involved. But make no mistake – it is not fast food. It’s quick, but the food is upscale and fresh. Heck, if you want to forego the bread
all together, that’s no problem either. Reimagine your favorite sandwich ingredients in salad or wrap form. You can add fresh-cut fries on the side. Or maybe a bag of chips or cheese bread. Freshsqueezed lemonade, anyone? I opted for dessert, instead. The chocolate chunk cookie was made in-house and was soft and delicious. My “go-to” sandwich is almost always turkey-bacon-ranch, but there are many other selections. The “Club” includes smoked ham, oven-roasted turkey breast, thick-cut and smoked bacon, with lettuce, Roma tomatoes, honey mustard and mayo. “Reuben” is loaded with slow-roasted corned beef and sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. Or you might like the “Cheesesteak,” one of the brand’s early and most popular sandwiches,” Italian “Pizza,” “Chicken Teriyaki” or “Cordon Bleu.” OK, now it sounds like you are ordering an entrée off an expensive restaurant menu. But the prices at Penn Station are reasonable. You can also go rogue and create your own combination.

The business has been around longer than I realized, too. There are actually more than 300 locations in 15 states. Who knew? The company’s founder Jeff Osterfeld actually opened his first sandwich shop (albeit under a different name) nearly four decades ago, in Dayton, Ohio. The concept grew from there. Obviously, they have the right “ingredients.” The first Penn Station-named shop opened in 1985, in Cincinnati. Along with the “Cheesesteak” and fresh-cut fries, the “display-cooking” concept was another of Osterfeld’s innovations that worked. A monthly special inspires patrons (like me) to try something other than their normal selection, and Penn Station also offers catering. This can be an attractive, affordable way to feed guests for a family gathering, workplace meeting or any kind of get-together, providing variety and fresh fare. Edwardsville’s Penn Station is located at 231 Harvard Drive. For more information, visit www.penn-station.com.

Join Missouri Botanical Garden for rare look at its botanists, scientists
The Edge
ST. LOUIS — Join Missouri Botanical Garden at its annual Science Open House. The open house is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at the garden. This year’s behind-the-scenes event is one day only. At Missouri Botanical Garden’s Bayer Center, meet the garden’s scientists, including some of the botanists who last year named and described nearly 200 new species, which represents 10% of all new plants discovered worldwide. Describing a species is a crucial first step in conservation. Learn about other fascinating research projects the garden’s scientists conduct around the world and how they discover, study and work to conserve plants locally and globally; visit one of the largest herbarium collections in the world, with more than seven million pressed- and driedplant specimens gathered from around the globe, dating back to the 1700s; explore the Peter H. Raven Library and see rare texts, including 400-year-old botanical
texts, beautifully illustrated and used still today; and, talk with garden librarians and the library’s book conservator about how they manage, protect and repair the garden library’s books. The Missouri Botanical Garden Science Open House is presented in partnership with the Academy of Science St. Louis. The Science Open House is an all-ages event.
