Musical Metro East: Goshen Theatre Project sweeps with St. Louis’ Best Performance Awards

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Goshen Theatre Project recently swept Arts For Life’s 2020 Best Performance Awards’ youth categories, revealed during a recent virtual ceremony by the 25-plusyear-old Arts For Life organization. Goshen Theatre Project (GTP), which led all nominated groups with 18 noms, won five youth awards overall for “Les Miserables: School Edition.” Those awards include Best Youth Musical Production, Supporting Actress Natalie Cochran as Eponine, costume design (GPT board president Terry Pattison), lighting design (Halli Pattison and Blake Churchill) and one-of-four special honors, Best Youth Musical Performance to Bennett English as Jean Valjean. Metro East Lutheran High School

graduate Alaina Bozarth, of Edwardsville, won one of two Arts For Life’s annual Youth Scholarships. English’s award is particularly significant for the relatively new GTP. “This award for an outstanding juvenile performer who was above and beyond, it has only been given it out about four times,” said Goshen Theatre Project’s Halli Pattison, 23, of Troy, who won in lighting design but also was nominated for Best Direction of a Youth Musical. Pattison’s mother is Terry Pattison, president of the GTP board. “He was ecstatic.” Arts For Life’s Best Performance Awards honor excellence in community and youth musical theater productions that were presented last year. Arts For Life is a St. Louisbased nonprofit group supporting the arts for

all ages. The Edwardsville-based Goshen Theatre Project performed “Les Miserables School Edition” last Aug. 2-4 at McKendree College’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, in Lebanon. “The kids were really excited,” Pattison said. “Arts For Life is a great way for communities to come together in St. Louis. It’s all community, just people coming together to produce art and create. “We would have gotten to perform at a live awards ceremony, they were so excited,” she noted. “But we are working on a way to showcase a performance. This show was a huge draw, we almost sold out every night.” Goshen Theatre Project’s “Les Mis” had approximately 51 performers age 8 to 18 and 12 people on the technology side and behind the scenes from age 45 to 70. The age range

of actors depends on GTP’s production. For example, there were different stipulations applied to Goshen Theatre Project’s Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” On stage last year, the production called for performers age 16 and younger. But, in general, Goshen Theatre Project encompasses performers from age 7 to 80. Incidentally, GTP’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” received five Arts For Life nominations. GTP, which concluded its fifth season last year, also has performed at the Roxana Nazarene Community Theater, in Roxana, but found its permanent home earlier this year in Collinsville, at 114 W. Main St., situated centrally among the towns from where Goshen Theatre Project draws. “Long-term plans are to put a theater in there. Our immediate goal is to use the space for rehearsals this summer,” Halli Pattison

Bennett English, right, as Jean Valjean, in the Goshen Theatre Project’s production of “Les Miserables: School Edition,” which scored 18 Arts For Life nominations, including a special recognition award for English for Best Youth Musical Performance. said. “We draw from Edwardsville, Mascoutah, Troy, Roxana, Staunton, Highland, all over the Metro East, St. Louis.” The Goshen Theatre Project was founded in 2014 by a group of public school educators and also some parents, including Pattison’s mother, Terry Pattison, also of Troy, who is president of the GTP board. Its first production was “Shrek The Musical” in 2015 performed at The Wildey Theatre, in Edwardsville. In this year’s Arts For Life Best Performance Awards, Goshen Theatre Project competed against Alton-based Riverbend Theatre, which won three Best Performance Awards, for its production of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” performed at Alton High School. Goshen Theatre Project has two main stage productions planned for this summer: “Beauty and the Beast” and “Footloose.” Also scheduled are some production summer camps for “Seussical KIDS,” for age 5 to 10, and “Peter Pan Jr.,” for age 10 to 15. The company held auditions in early spring before the the World Health Organization declared the new coronavirus pandemic. Arts For Life’s 21st annual Best Performance Awards premiered June 14, as a live interactive viewing event on the Arts For Life Facebook page and YouTube channel, rather than live, where it was previously scheduled at the Skip Viragh Center for the Performing Arts at Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis. The awards show was pre-recorded. The Best Performance Awards ceremony remains at the Arts For Life platforms for viewing. The Metro East was well represented in this year’s Best Performance Awards with winners not only from Madison County, but also from Monroe, Clinton, St. Clair and Washington counties. Besides English, among the four special honors given out were to Jennifer Kerner for her inclusion efforts, Kayla Dressman for Best Featured Dancer as Dream Laurie in Christ Memorial Productions’ “Oklahoma!” and Diane Hanisch, the Best Performance Award musical director/conductor for the past 20 years, who won a national Spotlight Award from the American Association of Community Theatres, presented by Quiana Clark-Roland. A Lifetime Achievement Award was not designated this year. Alton Little Theatre, in Alton, and Alfresco Productions, in Granite City, also won one award each. Take a Bow Showcase, which performs in Belleville, won two awards and Looking Glass Playhouse, in Lebanon, won one. Individual winners included Kristi Doering and Alison Neace, of Alton, Jayson Heil and Michael Frazier, of Godfrey, Halli and Terry Pattison, respectively, of Troy, English, Blake Churchill and Natalie Cochran, all of O’Fallon, Illinois, Margery Handy, of Belleville, Jacob Streuter, of Okawville, Mike Huelsmann, of Breese, Matt Dossett and Maria Wilken, of Waterloo, and Belleville native Will Shaw. Bozarth, who won a $500 Youth Scholarship, is one of two student winners pursuing a degree in the arts. Josiah Haan, a graduate of

Don’t miss Arts For Life’s virtual Theatre Mask Awards ceremony! Arts For Life’s Theatre Mask Awards was originally set for April 4, then moved to July 18, but now also will be a virtual celebration. The 2020 awards will honor excellence in community theater productions of dramas and comedies during 2019 in a live interactive viewing event at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Arts For Life Facebook page and YouTube Channel. The awards show will be recorded beforehand and the content will remain on social media. Fort Zumwalt High School, in O’Fallon, Missouri, also won a $500 scholarship. Bozarth plans to major in musical theatre at Belmont University in Louisville, Kentucky, and Haan plans to major in technical theater and design at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. Arts For Life is a nonprofit organization that encompasses 140 communities and 8,460 square miles in the city of St. Louis St. Louis County and St. Charles County, Missouri, and Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties in Illinois. Founded in 1994, by Lucinda Gyurci, as a group dedicated to the healing power of the arts, Arts For Life has honored community theater musicals for performances and achievements since 1999 with its Best Performance Awards, plays since 2015 with its Theatre Mask Awards and it expanded awards in youth musical theater in 2013. This is the first time Arts For Life did not host a live gala. Because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the ceremony was re-imagined as a pre-recorded virtual celebration. This year’s Best Performance Awards transitioned to a streaming format broadcast at Facebook and YouTube. Arts For Life President Mary McCreight said the coronavirus safety measures in place and restrictions on gatherings in St. Louis County were factors in the decision to cancel the live show but still have some sort of event. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for our local arts community to come together online and celebrate the many outstanding achievements of the previous year,” McCreight said. Performances from nominees for large ensemble musicals, two small ensemble musicals and five youth productions premiered on

RiverBend CEO director guides students in business

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

ALTON — Marquette Catholic High School’s Katie Sabolo has lifted youth to new heights through the RiverBend CEO program, in which she’s also reached new heights. Sabolo, of Wood River, a business instructor at Marquette Catholic High School (MCHS), began leading the youth program, RiverBend CEO, with support from the RiverBend Growth Association (RBGA), which is an investor in the program and provides extraordinary assistance to Sabolo in helping her connect with communities’ businesses.

As the facilitator of the RiverBend CEO program, she won the RBGA’s Chairman’s Award earlier this year for her work in 2019. The Chairman’s Award honors work emphasizing youth organizations or service to area youth. One of three annual Chairman’s Award, Sabolo received the honor for the RiverBend CEO program, modeled on a program begun by Effingham-based Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship, introduced as programming in the Riverbend region in 2015 as RiverBend CEO. Sabolo has led the local program since its inception. To date, the year-long RiverBend CEO program has graduated 52 students from the high schools of Alton, including MCHS, and East Alton-Wood

River. This year the program is adding students from Civic Memorial High School, in Bethalto, for the first time. The program is governed by a board of directors, of which Alton-based Cope Plastics’ Jane Saale is the president. RiverBend CEO is a high school business course that combines students from area high schools, including AHS, MCHS, EA-WRHS and CMHS. Those selected students into the program must start a business together in the first semester of the academic year to raise funds for their own startup in the second semester, when each student launches their own business. meet for course work at different host businesses. This year’s meeting spots have yet to be determined due to a pause caused by this year’s coronavirus stay-in-place orders, but past host businesses have included Historic Mineral Springs Mall, Post Commons, Riverbender.com Community Center, Liberty (United Community Bank) Bank, OSF Saint Clare’s Hospital building and Simmons Hanly Conroy LLC’s building, all in Alton. The RiverBend CEO student selection is a defined process. Students must submit a written request for admission, letters of recommendation and complete an entrepreneurial profile. Class members meet at local businesses, which change throughout the year. This helps the students establish a common identity based on their CEO experience and a greater appreciation for the region’s professional work environments. RiverBend CEO mentors help students immerse themselves in real-life learning experiences. RiverBend CEO teaches leadership, creativity and encouragement. Entrepreneurship education seeks to prepare people, especially youth, to be responsible, enterprising individuals who become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers and contribute to economic development and sustainable communities, Sabolo explained. During a typical school year, the CEO class meets daily from 7:30 to 9 a.m. five days a week for 90 minutes and students receive two high school credits. Students also receive college credit for their work in the RiverBend CEO program. Funding comes from business partners, the Alton Community Foundation and student projects. According to the program’s website, www.riverbendceo.com, a key part of the program’s success is rooted in a facilitator who challenges each individual student and can manage constant change in the classroom. “The CEO program is much more than a textbook course,” facilitator Sabolo said. “Rather, students are immersed in real-life learning experiences with the opportunity to take risks, manage the results and learn from the outcomes.” Each student in the program becomes an entrepreneur as each starts their own business with a prod-

uct or service that they market to the community at the annual Riverbend CEO Trade Show. For the 2019 class of RiverBend CEO students, they started a business making a Riverbend-Opoly game, based on the famous Monopoly board game. Established local businesses bought spots on the RiverbendOpoly game board where sponsors’ logos were placed, including addresses, telephone numbers and website URLs. “This serves as advertisement for their business,” Sabolo explained. “Once we had the properties on the board sold, we placed the order and purchased 500 games. Selling these games will help us raise funds for second semester, as well as give local businesses an easy way to advertise. “The kids sold most of the boards, but we do still have some left,” she noted. “We sold the property spots on the board quickly. Lots of local businesses were eager to help our young entrepreneurs. After we finalized the board layout, we submitted our order for the

board games. The students then sold them to raise money to start their own businesses last spring, in 2019.” A small reserve of Riverbend-Opoly games still are currently for sale. Games cost $30 each, available for pick up at the RBGA office at 6722 Godfrey Road, on the campus of Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey. Contact Sabolo at riverbendceo@ gmail.com to purchase a game and for more information. For the 2020-21 school year, RiverBend CEO has 18 senior-class students enrolled from CMHS, AHS, EA-WRHS and MCHS. “In a normal year, the students tour forty local businesses, hear from forty guest speakers, plan an all-class business together, and then launch their own individual business in the spring,” Sabolo explained. “We might have to make some edits with COVID, but that is the plan for this year.” Sabolo also is the executive secretary for the Rotary Club of Alton-Godfrey and lives in Wood River with her son, Josh, 7, and husband Brandon Sabolo, who she married Jan. 2, 2019. The family moved from Alton to Wood River last year, when they bought their dream home together in Kendall Estates.

How to be a better mentor

Mentors can have profound impacts on the lives of the people they mentor. A mentor is often a source of wisdom and support over the course of months or even years. The relationship between mentor and mentee can endure as long as each person desires. Serving as a mentor can be rewarding. Certain traits and practices set mentors apart. Those who want to be mentors can follow these tips.

Be a good and active listener

Mentors help mentees navigate the tricky waters of life but will not solve all problems. Mentors need to listen to what mentees say, meaning good listening skills are an essential trait for prospective mentors. After listening, mentors can provide a host of solutions, though ultimately it is up to the mentee to find his or her own path.

Meld with the mentee

Mentors and their mentees need to be close and compatible. A good mentor will not try to manipulate or influence decisions, but realize that support and guidance are the best ways to get messages across. Asking a lot of questions and truly getting to know the mentee can set a strong foundation for the relationship.

Emphasize learning

Mentors realize that continuing education is vital to success. Good mentors tend to be lifelong learners who share the lessons they’ve learned with the people they mentor. Even though they may not always be experts, mentors try to be as informed as possible on topics that relate to the mentorship.

Set expectations

It is one thing to provide support, but mentors also should inspire their mentees to work hard. Once mentees cite their goals, good mentors will share their own expectations and goals for their mentees, even going so far as to offer advice as to how to achieve those goals.

Deliver honest feedback

Good mentors will not sugarcoat feedback in order to stay in their mentees’ good graces. A mentor should aspire to be both a critic and a coach. Even though mentees may want to garner praise, mentors know it is important to say what others may not be willing to say. With the right feedback, mentees can flourish. Honesty, listening skills, a life-long desire to learn, and the ability to mesh with a mentee are all qualities of solid mentors.

How to help kids in your community

People give back to their communities in various ways. Some support local charities by volunteering or making financial donations, while others may deliver meals to convalescents who cannot leave their homes. Helping kids is a popular way to give back to your community. And helping kids is not just for parents, as young adults and older adults with no children of their own or those whose children are fully grown can give back to kids in their communities in various ways.

Coaching

Youth sports leagues rely on volunteers to run smoothly. Youth sports league coaches are not paid, so each coach is a volunteer. Inquire with your local government office about how to become a youth sports coach in your community. In many instances, no coaching experience is necessary to coach youth sports. However, prospective coaches will likely have to undergo training before they can patrol the sidelines. Such training may include everything from coaching pointers to

emergency medical training and more.

Teaching

Teaching school is a full-time job, but not all teaching gigs are paid. Adults with knowledge to pass along to the next generation may want to explore volunteer teaching opportunities. Successful professionals can share their professional expertise with high school or college students through community-sponsored programs. Amateur or professional musicians can offer lessons to youngsters interested in learning an instrument, while writers can teach kids about writing. Volunteer teaching opportunities may be easiest to find by speaking to local boys and girls clubs or schools that offer weekend or after school programs.

Fitness

Kids who are not involved in organized athletics may still enjoy exercise, which provides even more opportunities for adults to give back to the youth in their communities.

For example, cycling enthusiasts can work with local youth organizations to sponsor cycling groups for kids. If hiking or kayaking is your passion, look into organizing trips to nearby state parks where kids can hike and/or kayak and learn to love the great outdoors.

Mentoring

Many young people benefit from the guidance of mentors. Mentoring can be done through an organization such as Big Brothers Big Sisters (www.bbbs.org) or through local school systems that connect professionals from certain fields with students interested in pursuing careers in those fields. Mentoring.org is a great resource for adults interested in mentoring who may not know how to get involved with helping kids in their communities. Adults who want to give back to the youth in their communities can do so in various ways.

Arts For Life’s YouTube channel for 10 days leading up to the awards, and those performances also are now available at https://www.youtube. com/channel/UCnCSL5RPbHTrhbc0mbHcWnA . There were 15 community theaters and 10 youth-only groups who participated last year for this year’s awards. More than 60 judges in the Theatre Recognition Guild scored 46 shows — 19 large ensembles, three small and 24 youth, featuring 939 roles. For 2019, there were 154 individual nominations from 22 groups, with 36% firsttime nominees and 65% first-time winners. Thirty-three awards honoring excellence during 2019 were announced by past winners and

members of the Arts For Life board of directors, with two special guest presenters — Norbert Leo Butz, two-time Tony Award winner who grew up in St. Louis, and Hana S. Sharif, the Augustin Family Artistic Director of The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Butz, who also announced the youth musical production winner, told the audience to believe in themselves, even when it’s hard, and follow their dreams, noting he had supportive parents and “great” teachers. “Believe in yourself and keep on being grateful. Stick to it,” he said from his home in New Jersey. “(Performing arts) feeds our soul, our minds, our hearts.”

Goshen Theatre Project’s (GTP) Terry Pattison, of Troy, president of Goshen Theatre Project’s board and designs GTP’s sets and costumes, was nominated for multiple Arts For Life’s 2020 Best Performance Awards, for which she won Best Youth Costume Design for 2019’s “Les Miserables: School Edition.” (For The Edge)

City of Edwardsville’s fireworks display on for July 3

By Charles Bolinger charles.bolinger@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — The city will hold its annual fireworks celebration at a new location this year. The event is scheduled at 9:15 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Edwardsville High School campus near the track. The fireworks will last approximately 12 minutes. This site was chosen to allow more residents to watch the fireworks display while maintaining safe social distancing. People who wish to watch the fireworks on school district property will be required to practice current social-distancing guidelines and requested to wear masks. City of Edwardsville staff will handle traffic and parking on the high school campus parking lot. City officials said they hope to coordinate patriotic music

for the show that could be played via WSIE 88.7 FM radio, on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. There will be no sonic boom fireworks (salutes) and no low-level fireworks. The city cooperated with Edwardsville School District 7 administrators and staff and American Legion Post 199 to make the event possible this year during the pandemic. Nate Tingley, parks and recreation director, is pleased to be able to continue the city’s tradition this year. “We really wanted to continue offering the show for residents,” he said. “Hopefully, it is a bright spot for the summer. If we can do things safely and be in compliance with the state guidelines we would like to offer as much as we can for our residents and surroundings communities.” Reach reporter Charles Bolinger at 618-659-5735.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Way To Go, Joe! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — Curbside pickup seemed strange, at first. But it’s actually something you could get used to. I wonder how many restaurants will continue with the practice, even after the COVID-19 way of life seemingly is behind us, since Illinois entered Restore Illinois plan’s Phase 4 less than a week ago. That is going to happen, right? I mean, the coronavirus is something that will become part of history, not continue to be part of our lives? Only time will tell, but in the meantime, there are a couple of things that the situation inspired that I actually like. Curbside and delivery from so many establishments is one of them. It’s important to still support our local establishments, and it’s nice to still be able to “go out to eat,” even if the food is actually eaten in your own backyard, so to speak. When ordering at Joe’s Pizza and Pasta,

you can use the drive-through or have it delivered. We had eaten at Joe’s Pizza and Pasta a couple of times in the past (I’ve written about it before), but during the stay-at-home period of the pandemic, we tried it again — this time as curbside pickup — or rather, drive-through, in the case of the pizzeria’s Godfrey location. I can only call it authentic Italian pizza — or that’s what it is in my mind. Just the smell of it makes me think that, which is not always the case for all pizza places. Even though many of the “other” pizza places are good, it’s not the same type of good. It’s not the same type of pizza. So … we got the large “Joe’s Special,” with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onion and green pepper on thin crust, to split between two people, and even though I’m not a fan of cheese, I do like pizza with mozzarella — just mozzarella. Also, in my mind, I think that’s one of the differences between authentic Italian pizza and others who use multiple types of cheeses. But maybe that’s just me. We also got what they call a “small” Greek salad, without feta, but the small

As movie theaters reopen, ‘Yes, I’ll go!’

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — I‘m holding July 15 in high regard on my calendar next month. This date is ostensibly the one on which AMC will re-open the Edwardsville Showplace 12 (though that is unconfirmed at the time of this writing). After four months of pandemic-related closure, the chain is ready to begin allowing socially-distanced moviegoing. I’m positive that I’ll be in attendance that night, because of all the reasons I’ve shared with you this summer in my quarantined commentary on what it’s like not to go to the movies every week. But should I be so excited? Is it safe to go to the movies? Do they still matter? These are among a list of questions that caught my attention last week while scrolling through my LinkedIn newsfeed. The Hollywood Reporter had a buzzy headline about whether people would go back the cinemas when the doors open. Here’s how I feel about that, and then a

look at the three movies I’m most excited about when life resumes another aspect of “normalcy” in this calamitous year of 2020. Yes, of course, without reservation, going to the movies matters! It’s a staple of the American way of life for more than 100 years. Going to the movies was an important step as our economy got out of the Great Depression. Likewise, an important step in curing a depression that hangs over our individual heads right now, when the world is beating itself up. If you have health concerns or other disquieting reasons to stay home, then I respect your right not to go out. Even so, I realize it won’t be the same. You can read the action plans on the various exhibitor websites for how things are going to be different at the movies. Cleaning and sanitation schemes, revised concession options, employee behaviors, scheduling guidelines — all built around a shared desire to get back to something we know and love. I’ll go. I’ll acquiesce and wear my mask. We’ll get through this and it might even be a chance to take the cinematic experience back to basics.

The release schedule is completely unclear at this juncture. As best I can discern, cinemas will open with a hodgepodge of classic titles (potentially including a 10th anniversary re-release of “Inception”) and gradually add new titles as those pop up on the landscape. “Mulan” is slated for July 24 and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” is one week later, July 31. Nolan’s films are usually worth the hype. The “Wonder Woman” sequel has relocated to October and the holiday season looks like a million years away. Here are three others that’ll get me in the door: • “Irresistible” (releasing June 26, with chains including Cinemark reopening on this date) — This is good choice for its political parody, starring Steve Carell and Rose Byrne, about a small-town mayoral race that takes on much bigger stakes. Jon Stewart directed and, I think, this could be the most exciting race this year, either on the big screen or in real life.

• “Top Gun: Maverick” (Dec. 23) — Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) returns to teach aerial combat maneuvers to young recruits in this sequel that comes 34 years since its original was the top-grossing movie of 1986. This sequel will soar and/or crash and burn on Cruise’s performance alone. I find the 57-year-old actor’s smile no less winning than when he was a hotshot rookie, but those crinkles around the eyes that show the test of time have won me over, too. Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” roles keep getting better as the character aged with the actor. Can Cruise reinvigorate this franchise in a similar way? • “Bill & Ted Face the Music” (Aug. 14) — If the long-awaited “Top Gun” sequel has legitimate performance chances, then the third “Bill & Ted” movie is probably going to be dead on arrival. But I first met Bill S. Preston, Esquire (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) back in their original 1989 run and they’ve stuck with me. If I know one thing, these guys rock. And also, San Dimas High School football rules!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT continued from Page 21

easily splits into two generous-sized salads. I always take them out of the container and put them in our own salad bowls. If you order the large, or even the small just for one person, it could easily be a meal on its own. This Greek salad has become my favorite salad anywhere — at least for now. So much so, that after our first Joe’s curbside experience, we wanted to go back the following week — and we got exactly the same order. The salad has lettuce, onion, cucumber, tomato, black olives, beets and garbanzo beans, topped with a scrumptious Greek dressing. It is seriously one of the best salads I’ve ever eaten, and I am totally craving it right this minute. I know … some people may balk at the beets … but I think that’s what pushes it over the top as being so good. I love beets, and I can happily eat them by themselves, but on a salad, they are extra good. And they are so good for you. Beets are low in calories, and include fiber and several nutrients that contribute to good health. In addition to pizza and salad, Joe’s has sandwiches, appetizers, breads and desserts. And for pizza crust, you don’t have to get the thin, which is what we prefer. There’s also Chicago-style, thick and stuffed crust choices. Toppings and specialty pizzas are extensive, too. We’ve always been happy with basic “supremes” or “specials,” which include a mix of traditional ingredients. But if you like chicken or white

sauce and everything in-between, you can get that at Joe’s, too. If I didn’t entice you with the Greek salad (sorry if the beets sounded scary), there’s a house salad, Caesar salad, taco salad, spinach salad, and several others that will help you get your greens. Pasta dishes you might choose: ravioli, angel hair, spaghetti, stuffed shells or lasagna. “Trupiano Carbonara” has a white sauce, as does fettucini alfredo or shrimp alfredo. There’s a BLT sub, meatball or Italian beef sub. I said earlier that Joe’s reminded me of a traditional Italian pizzeria, but it turns out, the Joe’s Pizza tradition has Sicilian roots, opening the first store in Olney, Illinois, in 1971. The founding Trupiano family used secret recipes that are still kept secret, and evidently are what gives the food the unique flavor. Ordering and paying online or by telephone, then picking up (or having it delivered) makes it a safe, pleasant experience. Joe’s has locations in Edwardsville, Fairview Heights, Godfrey, Vandalia, and several other Illinois stores, for a total of 18 in the state. They also provide catering, which Joe’s Pizza and Pasta’s “small” Greek salad, ordered without feta. is a great idea because the menu has something for The salad is made up of lettuce, onion, cucumber, tomato, black everyone. Just My Desserts partners with McAlister’s Deli for diversity campaign

By Tyler Pletsch tyler.pletsch@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — McAlister’s Deli and an Alton baker have struck a deal to not only help save a Madison County business but also show “UniTEA” in diversity. My Just Desserts’ Yvonne Campbell, head baker and owner of the popular Alton lunch spot, recently accepted an offer from Edwardsville’s McAlister’s Deli, which saved Campbell from a potential financial crisis. “This really has been a blessing, financially,” Campbell said. “Because of COVID, we have been operating at a third of capacity.” The deal also has been about spreading awareness through a campaign promoted by McAlister’s called Love Your Neighbor. The campaign seeks to find local, black-owned businesses to help spread a message of unity — or as the campaign states #uniTEA — during the nation’s current civil rights movement. For Campbell, her part of the deal was to produce 33,000 cookies for 17 locations across the bi-state area as well as in Iowa and Kentucky. But, there was one catch. “We’re famous for pies and brownies,” she said. “We don’t make cookies.” While My Just Desserts normally doesn’t offer cookies as an option, Campbell said she couldn’t

turn down the work, nor the message. So she had to get creative. To bake the cookies, she reworked her famous Toll House brownie recipe into a cookie recipe. “It has worked better than I ever thought it could,” she said. After fulfilling the order, Campbell said she does not plan on stopping there. “It has worked so well,” she said. “We could even see these cookies in our stores.” Campbell also has considered working with Schnucks, as the grocer is offering goods made by local businesses as grab-and-go items. My Just Desserts, at 31 E. Broadway in Alton, has been located there since 1986. Campbell’s first job in high school was at the bakery and cafe and after studying culinary arts, she moved back into the baking world. Campbell will celebrate her second year as owner July 2. My Just Desserts is currently open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, but Campbell said that if a steady flow starts to pick up business, her hours might expand to accommodate patrons. For those who want to try one of the 33,000 cookies, Campbell said McAlister’s in Edwardsville is one of the 17 locations slated to receive the sweet treats. For more information visit www.myjustdesserts.org or follow its Facebook page @AltonDesserts.
