New complex combines residential, retail, wellness By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EDWARDSVILLE — A mixed-use development is set to be Edwardsville’s premier dining, shopping and social destination, in a centrally located district, bringing a range of restaurants and family owned businesses, as well as a medical professional. “I have a substantial amount of experience working with athletes of all levels, from professional athletes to weekend warriors,” said chiropractor Dr. Joshua Dowdy, who opened his own practice — Alliance Chiropractic and Performance — last month and currently serves patients at a temporary location until his permanent office has completely been installed at Edwardsville’s newest business enclave, Trace On the Parkway. Dowdy, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate, who, in 2016,
earned a bachelor’s in exercise science, furthered his education shortly thereafter at St. Louis’ Logan University, formerly known as Logan College of Chiropractic, a private special-focus university. From Logan, Dowdy earned a doctorate in chiropractic and master’s in nutrition. “I have a sports background from years of wrestling and competitive bodybuilding,” Dowdy said, “which helps me relate to the various injuries that come along with an athletic lifestyle. “My goal is to offer a higher standard of chiropractic care than what you may be used to, and provide the care that your body needs and deserves.” Dowdy’s patients include competitive athletes, crossfitters, powerlifters, bodybuilders, work-out enthusiasts, weekend warriors and athletes in general. Dowdy specifically offers chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, cryotherapy,

nutrition counseling and corrective exercise therapy. Within his practice, along with chiropractic care, he presents various other treatment methods that focus on both the muscular and the skeletal system, with pain alleviation as the main goal. Trace On the Parkway is located off of Illinois Route 157, centrally located within the bi-state region, with easy walkability in a pedestrian-friendly layout. Trace on the Parkway, at the intersection of Governors’ Parkway and 157, also has a residential living complex, which will be one of the first in the area to be primarily powered by solar energy. Willow & Moss, of E. Vandalia Street, also is transitioning to Trace On the Parkway. Edwardsville Mayor Hal Patton described Trace On the Parkway as a successful re-invention of the Montclaire Shopping Center, originally built in 1960. “The Parkway,” as it were, houses a variety of businesses, including retail, government, restaurants, tax services and business offices, such as insurance agencies.
Patton said the buildings at the formerly Montclaire Shopping Center received new facades, with an added incentive program for space owners to make upgrades. “I think that place has been a huge success, creating revenue for the city,” Patton said. “Overall, we are way better off than we were ten years ago, in terms of retail activity,” Patton said. Trace On the Parkway developer Scott Plocher, of Highland-based Plocher Construction Co., says a 291.2-kilowatt solar array system was installed at the Trace’s apartment buildings. The solar array is net-metered and should provide at least 60% of expected electricity needs to the complex, for which traditional electric provides the remainder. The system is made up of 728 individual solar panels, at 400-watts each, with an 85% performance guarantee for 25 years — plus six DC to AC power inverters. “We decided to add solar as a longterm investment in green energy for this

Pool IQ: What to consider before installing a swimming pool
Metro East House Hunters
There’s so many choices when it comes to swimming pools, for a range of budgets. Here’s some things to consider before you install a pool. • What type of pool should I choose? The type of pool you select can be based on many factors, including: budget personal preference the area of the country you live in You can choose from inground gunite, vinyl, fiberglass, or above ground. Each pool type is available in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles and offer many optional features. Based on your needs and expectations, your professional pool builder can help guide you through selection, design, budget and more. Get started by designing your dream pool with our quick guide to building your pool. • Do I need to have my above ground pool installed by a professional? Pool installation is a task often
best handled by the experts. While most above ground pools are designed to be easy and fast to install, a professional installation crew can provide you with assurances regarding getting the job done right the first time. However, spring and summer are the most hectic time for pool professionals, so it’s very important to set a schedule and book a crew early if you want to make the most of your pool for the entire season. Find out when the pool can be installed and how long it will take before you make your purchase. • What information should I have available to get a price quote? When you call for your quote, you need to answer the following questions: What is the approximate size of the pool (gallons or dimensions)? Do you have a covered (lanai) or open pool? Do you have a hot tub and/or fountains in your pool? Your phone quote will usually be a range of price, from lowest to highest. Once the technician arrives
to the pool, he or she will inspect your pool equipment for proper pressure and flow and give you the exact price before service is started. • How can I make sure pool construction stays on schedule and on budget? You should always agree on a detailed budget and estimated timeline before you sign a contract with a professional pool builder. Obviously, unforeseen factors can alter the schedule and sometimes impact the budget. For example, weather, customer change requests, permit delays, etc. can all affect the project, but a good builder will communicate and coordinate with you throughout the project to ensure successful pool construction and complete customer satisfaction. • How do I know if my pool fence satisfies local legislation requirements? When you purchase a fence, choose a product that is designed and manufactured in compliance with safety guidelines. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a document to help
choose a safety fence. Find the latest information from the CPSC. • How do I know what local laws and regulations are? Contact your city or municipality for applicable laws and regulations governing above ground pools – these may include the following: A building permit (not required in all areas, but you should always check) Safety standards (in certain regions) Utilities (electricity, laws governing when pools can be filled and drained, etc.) Laws regarding fencing and boundaries around a yard with a pool Boundaries of your property Be sure to select a spot that is far from overhead or underground electrical lines and water and natural gas pipes and make sure you’re not putting your pool near any natural water sources. • How do I know what size pump and filter I really need? Your pump and filter will be sized according to the volume of water in your pool. The main objective of any filtration system is the ability to turn over all the water in your pool at least once within a period of 12 hours. • How do I select the right pool builder? It’s always a good idea to consult with several professional pool builders and consider key issues such as experience, reputation and customer service before deciding who will build your pool. Our Dealer Selector can put you in touch with builders in your area, along with professional pool retailers who sell above ground pools and pool service professionals who can help you properly maintain your pool so you can enjoy it for years to come! As when hiring any contractor, you should always inquire about references, insurance and make sure they are properly licensed. You should also check the Better Business Bureau database for any unresolved complaints • How long does it take to build a pool? Different types of pools take dif-
ferent lengths of time to build and/ or install. Since fiberglass pools come pre-engineered in one piece, they are the fastest inground pools to install, followed by inground vinyl pools. Above ground pools can be up and running in a matter of days since no excavation is required. The length of time it takes to build an inground gunite pool depends on many factors including the weather, the size of the pool and the features and options that you select. A professional pool builder can give you an estimated timeline along with a budget when you request a quote. • How should I decide on the design of my pool? Design choices are best made after you have decided how you are going to best use your new pool or spa. Family activities vary greatly depending on the age of the family. • What color pool surface is best for heat retention? Regarding the pool shell and finish itself, then the darker the finish the better. Black has been a recent favorite of pool owners for a surface color. A black finish gives the swimming pool a “lagoon” look, however there are people who do not like that look. A disadvantage to the black is that if you are not diligent with pool chemistry, you can end up with black algae because it is hard to see in a black finished pool. Another is that, again, if you are not right on with chemicals you can end up with a nearly white pool within a few years due to calcium buildup.Regarding the pool shell and finish itself, then the darker the finish the better. Metro East House Hunters • Thursday, July 16, 2020 • 9 A saline (saltwater) sanitization system provides onsite production of the sanitizer necessary to maintain water in a safe, healthy and algae-free condition. Sanitizer is produced automatically, within the water itself, and involves no handling, storage or adding of chemicals to the water. A saltwater system, properly sized for its application, will eliminate the need to purchase sanitizing chemicals such as – pool chlorine, algaecides and shock chemicals. • What is the best choice of a liner pattern for my pool? Just like choosing a paint color for a room in your home, making a choice of liner pattern for your pool is a very personal choice. Many patterns are available to suit
your decorative preferences. Ask yourself: what are the colors surrounding my pool? The colors of the coping, deck, house, and patio furniture are important considerations in selecting a pattern that ties into your backyard decor. Ultimately, selecting the ‘best pattern’ is part of the fun of owning a vinyl liner pool, so enjoy the opportunity to design your pool to your personal taste. • What should I look for in a swimming pool fencing contractor? Ask your swimming pool fencing contractor to see samples of his/her work before you assign the job of constructing your swimming pool fence. Ask for references, photos and if possible, an opportunity to see some of the company’s most recent
work in person. Interview at least three different swimming pool fence contractors and gauge which one you are most comfortable with. Whose work were you most impressed with? Where did you get the best estimate, and who has the best presentation in general? These questions and your research will be beneficial in finding the right contractor to construct a safe barrier for your pool. Where can a saltwater system for a saltwater pool be used? The saline method of water purification can be used on virtually any body of water which presently requires some form of sanitizer/oxidizer to maintain the water in a healthy, algaefree condition.
Why do I need a site plan when designing my pool? Your building department may require a site plan to be submitted with your application for permit along with the swimming pool plans. It must show all property lines, any structures and the proposed swimming pool or spa. It has to be to scale and dimensioned. It also has to show other details such as your fence, gates, electric and gas meter location. • Will a darker liner heat my pool? While a darker liner may help heat the water a very small amount, the key factors are the exposure to sunlight, use of a solar blanket, and a pool heater. The difference the liner color will make in terms of pool water temperature is insignificant. This
should not influence your pattern choice. • Will I be able to see the seams in my vinyl swimming pool? Yes, though it will be very subtle you will be able to see the liner seams in your pool. Liners with white base film tend to make the seams more visible and liners with blue base films less so. • Will my vinyl covered steps be slippery? You should always enter and exit your pool carefully and with a firm grasp of the handrail, regardless of the type of step. Provided that there is no algae growth on the steps a vinyl covered step should be no less or more slippery than a formed plastic in-wall step. Remember, algae aren’t always visible, so exit and enter your pool

Tips to prepare for your next big home project
(MS) — The planning process is one of the most exciting parts of a home renovation project, and with social distancing keeping us indoors, now is the time to dream big and get ready. Whether it’s a basement makeover, a pool addition or even building a new house from scratch, here are some tips to get started: 1. Factor in your lifestyle. Think about your priorities and lifestyle – do you work from home without a proper home office? Do you enjoy cooking and entertaining? Is your backyard living up to its potential as an extension of your home? Asking these kinds of questions can help you determine the most beneficial focus for your next project. 2. Educate yourself. Take advantage of this extra time you have to learn about materials, processes and new innovations. You can make smarter purchasing decisions by finding out the answers to key questions, such as: Is this material mold-resistant? How long will it last? Is this a passing fad or will it stand the test of time? 3. Consider sustainability. Products and materials that reduce your carbon footprint don’t just help the planet — they’re often better for your wallet, too. When doing your research, look for energy-efficient appliances, windows,
walls and more to build a greener home that will last longer and save you money in the long run. 4. Disaster-proof your design. The pandemic has taught us that sometimes the worst can happen. From natural disasters to fires and flooding, we need our homes to offer as much protection as possible. Whether you’re planning an extension to your home, pools and spas for your backyard or a custombuilt home, insulated concrete forms from Nudura are a smart investment. An eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials like wood, ICFs are disaster resilient, designed to withstand wind, fire, tornados, and more. 5. Budget for smart splurges and savings. Budgeting is one of the most important parts of the planning process because you want to spend your hardearned money wisely. You’ll want to splurge on items that will boost your property value, like energy-efficient features, creating more living space and a solid foundation. Upcycling and repurposing furniture, DIY-ing simpler projects like painting, and spending more on nicer hardware but less on cabinets are clever ways to save. Find more information at nudura. com.

Pools and lawns can get along
Homeowners interested in installing pools in their backyards need not worry about the potential impact of such decisions on surrounding landscapes. According to the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, there are 10.4 million residential and 309,000 public swimming pools in the United States. Although the average monthly temperatures in Canada are lower than those throughout much of the United States, many Canadian homeowners still have pools in their backyards. Quebec is home to the most pools per capita for Canada — with some estimates suggesting the province has more than 300,000 backyard pools, according to Pool and Spa Marketing
magazine. Many homeowners wonder if the chlorine and other chemicals in pool water have any affect on the lawn, particularly if pool water robs lawns of vital nutrients they need to thrive. But the resource All About Lawns says most people needn’t worry about errant drops or even higher levels of overflow. It all comes down to the selectivity of grass. Blades of grass are particular about which nutrients from the water they absorb and in what quantities. Lawns are largely unaffected by chlorine. Furthermore, soil can withstand chlorine when kept at applicable sanitary levels (which generally range between two to three parts per
million), at high acid levels. That’s much more than is usually contained in pool water. Pool water is also maintained in the neutral range at a pH of 6.5 to 7.8, which is safe for plants. Should the pool water test at a higher acidity or alkalinity, it can adversely affect landscapes, particularly delicate plants. Pool owners should be diligent about smart application and storage of pool chemicals. Powdered or liquid chlorine and other water chemistry products that spill onto grass or plants may cause damage. In safe amounts, chlorine should not adversely affect lawns and other plants that surround pools.

Safety in and around the pool
Beating the heat in a pool is one of the most popular warm-weather activities. Swimming attracts people of all ages because of its various benefits. In addition to being an enjoyable recreational activity, swimming also is a lowimpact way to exercise. Having a backyard pool makes swimming and outdoor fun that much easier. Although exact numbers are difficult to come by, various sources indicate there are approximately 4.5 million residential swimming pools across the United States. While it once was relatively rare to find a backyard swimming pool in Canada, things have changed — especially in Quebec. No other province comes close to matching Quebec for backyard pools, which has well over 300,000 backyard pools, more than Ontario (which has five million more people). Quebec also has more pools per capita than almost anywhere else in North America according to numbers compiled by Pool & Spa Marketing magazine. Pools can be enjoyable places to gather and make for the focal points of yards, but they require careful use so fun is
not overshadowed by tragedy. Unfortunately, young children have the highest risk of pool injury or drowning, with more than 200 youngsters drowning in swimming pools each year. The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® have partnered to educate home pool users. The following guidelines are important when adults and children are enjoying the pool. • Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well. • Establish rules. Each pool owner should establish their own set of rules for the pool. These can include “no running around the pool,” “no diving in a shallow pool” and “no riding toys at poolside.” Pool owners can customize rules as they pertain to safety issues in their yards. • Maintain constant supervision. People of any age can
drown. That is why it’s always safest for swimmers to swim with a buddy or with someone watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics says an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach when infants and toddlers are swimming. This is known as “touch supervision.” For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and remain free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending to household chores, or drinking alcohol. • Use approved flotation devices. Individuals who do not know how to swim should rely on a Coast Guard-approved flotation device. Water wings and general pool floats are not adequate, especially in situations that requires someone to be saved. • Take swimming lessons. Knowing how to swim will not entirely remove the risk of drowning, but it certainly can reduce it. Many swim programs teach water survival skills as well as general swimming techniques. Fun around the pool is par for the course come summer. But fun must be balanced with safety when swimming.

Creating your own backyard oasis
(MS) — Our backyards are some of the best places to spend the summer months, especially if you’re practicing social distancing and are tired of being cooped up indoors. Fortunately, it’s possible to transform your outdoor living space into a secluded, open-air retreat. Bring the indoors out. We often hear about bringing the outdoors inside, but the reverse is also true when designing a luxurious extension of your home. Homey, lived-in touches can take your outdoor space from sterile and unfinished to cozy and inviting. Think patterned throw pillows, fluffy
blankets for chilly evenings, outdoor rugs, colorful lanterns, and decorative accessories like painted terracotta pots or metal tins. Invest in comfy furniture. What’s the best part of your living or family room? Chances are it’s your comfortable couch or recliner. To recreate the same feeling, splurge on some soft furniture that will make you want to stay outside for hours reading a book or working remotely. It doesn’t have to break the bank either — you can DIY a cozy lounging bench with reclaimed wood and hand-sewn cushions with outdoor stuffing and fabric.
Add a relaxing pool or spa. Water has a calming effect and is often linked to our favorite memories at the cottage or on vacation. A pool or spa can help transport you somewhere far away without leaving your home. A pool can help you and the kids get some exercise while swimming laps, while a spa can soothe tired muscles after a long day hunched over your laptop. To reduce energy costs and increase longevity, consider using Nudura insulated concrete forms, which provide superior insulation. ICF pools also can be custom-made to accommodate any design, making them
a very versatile and efficient way to build pools. Go wild with greenery. Live plants can help you feel connected with nature, and tending to them can help you feel relaxed yet productive during isolation. A vertical garden can add visual interest, while trees and shrubs can provide shade and character. Aromatic herbs like lavender or rosemary offer pleasant scents and can spice up your cooking. And don’t be afraid to cut some flowers from your garden to place in vases or pots for beautiful finishing touches. Find more information at nudura.com.

Tips that could mean the difference for the multiplex looking to find itself again
By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge
EDWARDSVILLE — I’m nostalgic for the movies, but not quite yet as you can imagine. With cinema openings again delayed because of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, my mind again got to wandering. When I last wrote about re-openings planned for this week I also said that it would be a good time to take movie-going back to basics. But then I realized that I don’t even know that such a thing could be feasible. For every argument that could potentially make the theater environment experience better, the antithesis also is true. Does that mean I’m defeated before I even get to the crux of the matter? Certainly not. Here are a few things I honestly think could mean the difference for an industry looking to find itself again after potentially the longest delay in its storied history. I’ll start with the food-and-drink concept because I’m the first to admit that eating at the movies is a blissful, indulgent experience that I will never shy from. Popcorn is more
closely associated with the movies than MGM, Cary Grant or any title put on the silver screen. Gotta keep that. An ice cold beverage — adult or otherwise — has to go alongside for continuity’s sake. Where exhibitors find their profit at the concession stand also is where the excess of going to the movies has swelled. Do we need 25 candy options, fried mini-tacos and three brands of bottled water? Not really. Scale it back to your classics and the crowds will still come: M&Ms, Junior Mints, Milk Duds, something sour, and something made out of peanut butter, cookie dough or peanut butter cookie dough. Reducing overhead might theoretically even reduce prices (wishfully thinking). Technology has streamlined the experience, too. I would not advocate for the removal of mobile ticketing, in-app purchases, ultra-premium seating or the sight-and-sound enhancements that make those features truly remarkable when they’re 40 feet tall. Keep the infrastructure, but stop sacrificing the human touches that regular guests crave. Staff theaters with competent, friendly people who are treated well and project the image that they also enjoy being there. Give managers a chance to interact with the house. Give an
usher a purpose again that is more than a broom jockey. My third and final point is one I’ve harbored forever. There are just too many movies. When the multiplex concept exploded in the mid-1990s, studios were able to double their number of releases each year and that drove profits through the roof. But quantity has killed quality. If you put out five new titles every week, only the one with name recognition comes out on top. And if four movies fail on opening weekend, they’re doomed to lose their full engagement after 10 days or so. I’ll never forget seeing “Sister Act” spelled out on the old Cottonwood Cinema roadside marquee (where a Walgreens now sits). I rode the school bus to Glen Carbon Elementary School for the sixth grade in 1992-93. “Sister Act” was held over from Memorial Day for almost the rest of that YEAR! Fewer movies will mean better movies and it won’t just be my fondness for bringing them to your attention. Lest you ever doubt my sincerity, I’ll share with you a truly enjoyable memory I have of a nostalgic trip to the movies. In 1997, Disney remade an updated version of their family film “That Darn Cat!” This was not a terribly important picture, but I cherished the experience with my entire family. I like cats. I had the same crush on Christina Ricci as every other teenage boy in America at that time. The ’90s phenomenon Doug E. Doug was her co-star. We ate buckets of popcorn. What’s not to love? And if my “Serious Movie Addiction” is nothing more than chasing that feeling, it’s all been well worth it. Until the pandemic ends, chew on these thoughts for a while. I didn’t intend for these musings to resemble an open letter to theater owners, but that’s how it seems to have wound up. We’ll get through this yet.

unique facility,” Plocher says. “Part of what makes Trace unique is the easy access it provides to outdoor spaces and recreational opportunities and we want to do what we can to encourage environmental stewardship. “We believe the solar panels will add to the distinctive qualities of this development.” Collinsville’s Day and Night Solar, 1605 Eastport Plaza Drive, provided the project’s solution, Plocher says. The company utilized several state, as well as federal, tax credit incentives to help supplement some of the project’s initial installation cost. Edwardsville Community Development Director Walt Williams touted tax incentives with adopting solar. He said solar is something he’d like to see considered more often by local businesses. “As a community that strongly believes in maintain-
ing its green spaces, we are excited to see Trace On the Parkway make an environmentally sound move such as this,” he said. “I’m not aware of many businesses or commercial properties that have made the move to solar energy,” he noted, “but, from a long-term sustainability standpoint, it will enable them (Trace On the Parkway) to lock in electricity prices and reduce reliance on an unpredictable expense, which helps them plan better for the future.” Plocher Construction, based in Madison County, it the developer for the $50 million, mixed-use Trace On the Parkway project. Included in the mixed-use complex, a portion of the Trace will be a residential complex, consisting of 166 luxury apartments, with either one, two or three bedrooms. This particular project within a project also will include
eight townhomes, available for purchase. The living spaces include multiple amenities, as well as outdoor activity access, including via the Madison County Transit trail system. Back to the ‘80s: Andrew McCarthy writing ‘Brat Pack’ book
By HILLEL ITALIE AP National Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — Actorwriter-director Andrew McCarthy, a 57-year-old father of three, keeps getting asked about his “Brat Pack” years in the 1980s. He is now ready to answer. Grand Central Publishing a n n o u n c e d Tu e s d a y t h a t McCarthy’s “Brat: An ‘80s Story” will come out next spring. Grand Central is calling the book “a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction and masculinity.” McCarthy is calling it a longdelayed reckoning. “For years people have asked me, on a near daily basis, ‘What was it like “back in the day?’ Routinely, I’d offer up any number of stock responses,” he
said in a statement. “Finally I thought, ‘Let’s take a hard look under that rock.’ What I found surprised me, at times scared me, and finally made sense of a lot of seemingly disparate parts of my life.” McCarthy was widely known in the ‘80s for such films as “Pretty In Pink,” “Less Than Zero” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and for his association, at least as seen by the media, with such contemporaries as Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald and Emilio Estevez. The term “Brat Pack” was popularized by an unflattering New York magazine story that ran in 1985 and portrayed the young actors as shallow and selfabsorbed. McCarthy has long disputed he was part of any such group, telling People magazine in 1999 that he hadn’t seen any of his famous co-stars since making
“St. Elmo’s Fire.” Over the past 30 years, McCarthy has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, starred in the acclaimed play “Side Man,” written an introspective travel memoir that Cheryl Strayed praised as a “good book about a good man” and directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black” and “Gossip Girl” among other programs. He has also spoken openly about past struggles, saying he began drinking at age 12. Grand Central announced that he will write about everything from “scoring loose joints in Washington Square Park” to “Hollywood with John Hughes and an iconic cast of characters.” “’Brat’ is a surprising and intimate story of an outsider caught up in a most unwitting success.”

Vegas entertainers dance, train at home, awaiting the stage
By MICHELLE L. PRICE Associated Press
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Concerts, acrobatic shows, striptease dance revues and other performances that typically entertain thousands of tourists in Las Vegas are among the workplaces that have had to shutter from the coronavirus. Though casinos have been allowed to reopen with rules about sanitizing, social distancing and mandatory face masks, hundreds of performers who round out the onlyin-Vegas spectacle are still waiting. Many performers, including those who’ve come to the city from all over the world, are waiting in Las Vegas for the shows and crowds to return, trying to keep their bodies in top form, practice their skills and find a way to perform. Miguel Rivera had been dancing with the Chippendales male revue for four months when the show shut down, taking Rivera from energetic and interactive audiences every night to a lot more quiet. The show
typically involved male dancers out interacting with the audience and sometimes having physical contact. “That’s why it is hard to come back with a show like ours,” he said. “Or we have to modify everything.” The dancers, like most performers at Las Vegas shows, haven’t been given any indication when they’ll be called to return to the stage. For now, Rivera is among a small group of Chippendales’ dancers doing Zoom “parties,” dancing in the show’s signature shirt collar and cuffs for virtual bachelorette and birthday parties and more. “At the beginning it was kind of weird because I’m lap dancing in front of the camera,” he said with a laugh. “This is the only way we can interact together.” Rivera said he misses the energy and the feedback of the crowd. Virtual performances involving making more conversation with the audience, and sometimes they can be too quiet or hard to read. The upside, he said, is that he and those watching him dance can speak to
each other by name and it’s a fun, more personalized experience for the audience. Melissa James, a dancer and aerialist in the show “Extravaganza” at Bally’s casino-resort, said it was heartbreaking when, after weeks of grueling rehearsals, COVID-19 closures shut down her show after its debut night in March. Since then, she said, “we’ve kind of just been waiting here, trying to stay in shape and stay fresh and ready, should we get the go-ahead that shows will allowed again.” While largely quarantining at home, James said she does circuit workouts to keep up her stamina and uses equipment at home and a recently reopened circus training space to work on strength and aerial skills. To stay inspired, she practices ballet and works on choreography. “As artists, we’re not sitting here cooling our heels,” she said. “Every day we’re trying to be creative.”

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Dining Curbside at Tony’s By Vicki Bennington For The Edge
ALTON — Like all restaurants during the 2020 pandemic that will hopefully, soon be a thing of the past, Tony’s Steakhouse and Bar, has learned to adapt with the times. While to-go orders were always available at the longtime Alton establishment, curbside service has given it a whole new meaning. As bad as it sounds to say, I guess some good things have come out of this crazy time in history, and curbside service — in my estimation — is one of them. Who doesn’t like calling from your own home to place your order, paying for it on the phone, then getting in your car, driving to the parking lot and having your order brought out to you, and away you go? I have to admit, I kind of like that. Tony’s food has been a favorite of mine and my family for a long time, and while I always liked sitting down and experiencing a nice restaurant, there’s something to be said for eating that same good food at home, too. At any rate, I’ve been eating at Tony’s for decades. I believe the pepperloin steak is sort of what
put it on the map, but for years and years, I never tried it. It sounded like it might be too spicy, maybe, I’m not sure. I would get the filet, which is basically a pepperloin without the peppercorns. But at some point, in the last year or so, I tried it, and now that’s become my “go-to.” For this curbside visit, I got the pepperloin kabob (cooked medium) with a baked potato and the house salad (without cheese). The pepperloin kabob is the same as Tony’s famous pepperloin steak, but I like the idea of the kabob already cut into smaller pieces. The meat is very tender and juicy, and topped with mouthwatering garlic butter. The house salad (with the house sweet Italian dressing) is also a must-have for me at Tony’s. I used to order the Caesar salad nearly every time, which is good, too, but at least at this point in time, I’m hooked on the house. Tony’s baked potatoes are really good, too — big and well-cooked, with the butter already nestled and melting when you receive it (I have a pet peeve about your baked potato coming to the table with the butter on the side. It never works out or melts the way you want

it to at that point). My husband ordered the Caesar — that’s his pick every time. And he likes to try the different pasta dishes. This time it was “Cajun Chicken Pasta,” cheesy, semi-spicy penne pasta and juicy chunks of chicken. He gave it a definite thumbs up. Even when ordering curbside, Tony’s includes delicious soft bread with creamy butter — great as a side with your salads. There are a lot more pastas and chicken choices, along with seafood dishes like salmon filet and shrimp scampi, both of which I’ve tried and liked, and of course, the pizza, which is unique, and one of the dishes (like the pepperloin) that people travel near and far to order. There’s always a curbside special or two, like a large pizza, two salads and a bottle of wine, all for a set price that seems like a good deal to me. Family Carry-Out specials, such as two pizzas, a pan of salad and a loaf of bread make dinner for a crowd affordable and easy. You can even get some of Tony’s delicious steaks — pepperloins rolled in half-cracked black pepper, or filets — uncooked, so you can grill them in your own backyard. Tony’s steak garlic butter, and house or Caesar dressing are even available for purchase in pints or quarts — deliziosa! Tony’s has been offering patio dining the past few weeks, too, with social distancing rules in place, and most recently, were able to reopen indoor dining, also with table spacing and mask requirements helping to keep patrons safe. If you haven’t been to Tony’s lately, it has a fairly new address, moving the first of the year from its original, longtime location on Third Street to the current 102 W. Ninth Street (at the corner of Piasa Street) in Alton. For daily specials and a full menu, visit www.tonysrestaurant.com. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants, to chef conversations, new trends and fads, and things to try at home. The music“ hasn’t stopped. TInstead, indoor concerts are now courtyard serenades.
”
“When things changed to make everyone safer, I worried that the bright spots would go away. I shouldn’t have! Cedarhurst knows how to adjust activities and kept my favorite – visits from local musicians. It’s really beautiful. The music hasn’t stopped. Instead, indoor concerts are now courtyard serenades. I go to my window for them and it makes me feel like a queen.” — Lydia At Cedarhurst, caring protection and joyful moments live in harmony. We invite you to learn more about how our creative, compassionate staff, person-directed care and welcoming environment enriches life for our residents and their families. Call for more information or to schedule a virtual tour. We’re here to help!
