Edwardsville native puts city on Supercross map It’s go time!

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

ST. LOUIS — A rising star in the world of professional motocross racing, Theodore “Bubba” Pauli, of Edwardsville, as an athlete and a manager, will lead his team in round two of Monster Energy AMA Supercross’ 2020 season. The 17-round schedule for the 2020 season of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, a FIM World Championship, will have riders returning Saturday, Jan. 11, to fan-favorite market St. Louis at The Dome at America’s Center. Supercross features the world’s most elite athletes chasing their dreams, like Pauli (450SX Class), on U.S. soil inside America’s most wellknown stadiums. Three first-time champions, Cooper Webb (450SX Class), Dylan Ferrandis (Western Regional 250SX Class) and Chase Sexton (Eastern Regional 250SX Class) will be eager to defend their titles against the rich field, including Pauli, Jason Anderson, Marvin Musquin, Eli Tomac, Chad Reed, Ken Roczen, Justin Barcia, Adam Cianciarulo (250SX Class), Justin Cooper (250SX Class) and Austin Forkner (250SX Class). Fans, family and friends can spot Pauli on the Supercross track by his number — 282. Pauli turned pro at the end of 2013 and has dominated in motocross competitions ever since. Pauli’s best career result to date is an 18th place finish at the Seattle & San Diego 450 Supercross, in which he finished 47th overall in 2018, and he has qualified for more than 100 professional events. Last season, he completed all 17 rounds of the Supercross series and earned a top 20 450 Supercross finish. Pauli also is an actual character in the Monster Energy Supercross 2 video game for Playstation and XBOX. He began riding dirt bikes with a couple of friends as a child and eventually got his own bike when he was 10 years old. “I fell in love with the sport from there,” recalled Pauli, a native of Edwardsville, who graduated with Midwest Christian Academy in 2011.

Pauli, 25, rides for practice and training in Elsberry, Missouri, at Double Eagle MX, He also trains in Elsberry, Missouri, at Double Eagle MX, with fellow members of his Supercross Race Team TXS Productions, which he manages and sometimes he rides in Alton, at Ride Organic MX on Harris Lane. But mostly he practices at home in the backyard. “It started out small, as just an oval,” Pauli said about his home motocross track. “In 2015, big changes were made and, essentially, created a full track.” He spends a lot of time in the gym, too, doing cardiovascular exercises and weight training, while making sure to ride enough. His fitness program also helps him as a volunteer firefighter with the Hamel Community Fire Protection District. He was an emergency medical technician for about four years, but recently went to firefighting only; motocross is his full-time job. “Firefighting provides a reality check and really brings you back down to earth,” he explained, “whereas Supercross is more of a privilege. Both have provided me with useful skills to remain calm and positive in stressful situations, definitely ways that both professions build off each other. “Both are serious situations, and both need to be taken seriously.” Pauli has some extended family members who are firefighters, even though ultimately racing took over in his life. “But firefighting was something I always wanted to do, whenever I could,” he noted, “even if it was on a smaller level.“ When he’s home, in between motocross seasons and just training, he’s always on call, like, all the other firefighters. “Obviously when I am on the road for a season like Supercross, I don’t get home much, so I am kind of away from it then,” he said, “but, when I’m home, I try to be as available to them as possible.” He finds his balance by being prepared. “I prepare to be ready for anything, at any point in time, for both

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 2, 2020 • 5 professions,” he said. “They seem to complement each other well in that way. Both can run you down mentally and physically if you don’t prepare.” Like firefighting, motocross racing can be a dangerous sport if not prepared, he said. “Be smart in the moment, and aware of your surroundings,” he said. “You gain experience over time and that prepares you for things you might not expect. “During practice, we work on reflexes and some different scenarios that could come up.” Yet, there’s more that goes into managing a team. “It’s difficult, something you need to work your way into,” he noted. “It’s something I, kind of, evolved into. I was fortunate enough to partner with sponsors and teammates and it slowly came together. It was never in the plan from the start of my career to have my own team and be in the position that I’m in, but it has definitely worked out. As manager and an athlete of the TXS Productions Race Team, Pauli looks forward to leading his three-rider team through all 17 rounds of the 2020 Supercross series and bettering his personal results along the way. He coordinates logistics, oversees riders, does the team’s budgeting, communicates with sponsors and makes sure all of his teammates have the equipment that they need to be successful. “I have an assistant manager and a manager of operations who help me with all these tasks as racing really heats up,” he explained. Any age is a good age to get involved in motocross, Pauli said. Supercross Futures, an AMA Amateur National Championship, will

take place Sunday, Jan. 12, in St. Louis, one of 10 select markets, at The Dome. The amateur series provides even greater access to the sport’s largest stage, giving up-and-coming talent a chance to compete in the same stadium and on the same dirt as the elite athletes of Monster Energy Supercross, while honing their skills in advance of professional careers. “I started late in the Supercross world compared to other guys at our level,” he noted. “But there’s a lot more to being a professional than just going fast. “Being a professional is having the ability to be smart, stay humble and manage yourself properly as a professional, at all times, both on and off the track.” The ground-breaking Supercross Futures concept will foster approximately 6,100 athletes across 26 classes on their “Road To Supercross” — beginning with 4 year olds in the 51 Limited class, through the elite 250SX Futures class, providing athletes the opportunity to earn their 250SX Class Supercross license, leading up to the 2020 Supercross Futures National Championship in October at the Monster Energy Cup. Athlete registration is now open at www.supercrossfutures.com. The TXS Productions Race Team ride Kawasaki bikes. Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

That’s Italian! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

There was a time when you thought of Italian pasta and other dishes, and it was not synonymous with a quick lunch that tasted authentic. Fazoli’s, which opened its first store in 1988 in Lexington, Kentucky, is tasty Italian cuisine, and while you can get your order quick, I would not put it in the category of “fast food.” Located locally in Edwardsville and Alton (of 218 nationwide), the restaurant is a good choice when you want a nice lunch or dinner, and don’t have a lot of time. Don’t be surprised when you find an upscale, yet casual dining Vicki room, “real” silverware (not Bennington plastic) and servers who take your plates and walk around replenishing bread sticks. Now that’s not your typical fast-food establishment. My daughter and I stopped by recently and ordered the lunch special. My choice was spaghetti with meat sauce, a Caesar salad and drink. I got all of this for a very low price (especially since I had a coupon).

NOW SEEING PATIENTS IN NOW SEEING BETHALTO

My daughter picked fettuccine Alfredo, one slice of pizza and a drink. She got the same reasonable lunch-special price. We decided to try the pizza breadsticks on the side. They came with marinara sauce, just for fun. But we soon found out we way overordered because, with the special, we had access to bottomless basic bread sticks. The Caesar salad (and most important, its dressing) was great. I would go back just to order it. As for the pasta, the spaghetti was good — and I actually, don’t order pasta out very often — but I would order it again. My daughter said the fettuccine was cooked “just right,” and she liked the flavor of the sauce. We both decided we actually like the basic Italian breadsticks better than the pizza sticks. The basic ones were soft, hot and have a really good flavor. The pizza sticks did, too, with mozzarella and pepperoni, but the basics still come in at No. 1. There’s also baked lasagna, baked ziti, smoky bacon pasta bake (or breadsticks), smoky chicken carbonara bake – the list goes on and on. It’s a fairly extensive menu. Fazoli’s specialty sandwiches, Submarinos, include Meatball Da Vinci, Primo Italiano and Turkey Club Classic. “Kid’s Meals” are also available. Spaghetti with meat sauce, Caesar salad and The items are prepared fresh throughout basic breadsticks. (Vicki Bennington | For the day — and you can tell. The Edge)

First Community ready to ring in new year with you

The Edge First Community was established in 1934 as the Monsanto Credit Union to serve Monsanto employees who lived in Missouri and Illinois. In the late 1970s the credit union expanded its field of membership to serve other companies and communities and changed its name to First Community Credit Union in 1983. First Community now serves individuals who live or work in five Missouri counties, plus the Illinois counties of Madison, Monroe and St. Clair. Family of existing members are also eligible to join. First Community has 44 locations in the St. Louis metro area including two branches in Glen Carbon. In business for 85 years, First Community has $2.8 billion in assets, which ranks it among the larger financial institutions that call St. Louis home. First Community is the largest credit union in the area and among the top 100 credit unions in the nation. But putting statistics and performance ratios aside, what First Community is most proud of is being a hometown financial institution. A long history of growth and success have proven that. First Community’s real objective is to be the financial institution for metro-area families at every stage of life. This strategy is very intentional with products and services from birth through retirement. First Community’s youngest members are extremely important to them. Rising Stars accounts are available through the age of 12. These account holders get special perks, like, sticker savings folders and gifts when they open their account. They receive invitations to private First Community events at places such as Eckert’s,

City Museum and The Magic House. They also receive $1 for every “A” they receive on their report cards. And that is not where First Community’s commitment to education ends. First Community offers classroom education presentations to all grade levels. The presentations teach the importance of balancing saving, spending and sharing. First Community presents this program to an average of 12,000 students every school year. Arguably the most important thing that First Community does is loans. Most people need to borrow money for major purchases, such as homes and cars and that is where First Community really stands out. Month by month, they are the single largest auto lender in the area. Their rates are among the most competitive you will find. Home loans are possibly the best way First Community helps people. They provide home loans with a variety of products and terms. They do not charge home loan application fees or processing fees. Ever. They have fixed rate loans and jumbo mortgage loans for luxury home owners. Several years ago they introduced a First-Time Home Buyer loan. This product is ideal for young people or families just starting out who may assume they can’t afford home ownership. It has no closing costs, no down payment and no private mortgage insurance. The other product that everyone still needs is a checking account. First Community has a variety of checking accounts with no monthly maintenance fees or minimum balance requirements. First Community’s First Rate Checking Account pays an amazing interest rate. You won’t find a better checking account

anywhere. Reward Checking Accounts come with cash back just for using the account and all checking accounts have free debit cards and picture cards to put your favorite photo right on your debit card. You will find most banks charge monthly fees for checking accounts and sometimes even charge for things like debit cards. In addition to products and services First Community is all about convenience. There are now First Community branches inside 18 Walmart stores including Glen Carbon, Granite City, Belleville, Collinsville and Godfrey. These offices have hours seven days a week and weeknight hours until 7 p.m. The convenience of banking while shopping has been enormously successful for First Community and its members. First Community also has a strong business services department. They offer business accounts and loans, such as commercial vehicle loans, credit cards and equipment loans. Some of the advantages of our loans include competitive rates, extended terms, no prepayment penalty and minimal fees with no fee ever charged for application, processing or documentation. First Community is also a preferred SBA Express Lender. In 2019 First Community partnered

with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and announced naming rights to the First Community Arena at SIUE’s Vadalebene Center. First Community will host a table at every basketball game with special offers and giveaways. “We are extremely proud of this partnership and look forward to a long relationship with the school over this ten-year agreement,” a First Community spokesperson said. Almost every employee working in an Illinois branch is a resident of that community. Every effort is made to support local events, schools and organizations with financial support and participation whenever possible. Smokin’ on Main, the Glen Carbon Homecoming, Halloween Parade and the Waterloo Pumpkin Festival are just a few of the events First Community has sponsored this year. They back dozens of organizations every year with employee fundraising efforts, as well as corporate donations. Last year alone they made donations of more than $50,000. First Community is committed to Illinois and they look forward to serving the community. To learn even more about First Community stop by a branch of visit www.firstcommunity.com.

‘Bombshell’ explosive story of former Fox News CEO downfall

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

I would guess that it’s fair and balanced of me to say that I do not watch Fox News. I never have. I am familiar with their reputation as a staunch, right-leaning network that has an abiding interest in the conservative values of the Republican political party. While I can respect their right to a pointof-view, I am not necessarily in league with news having a perspective that slants it toward roughly 50% of the greater population. The new movie “Bombshell,” therefore, is my greatest connection to the network and let’s just say that it’s not the best way to get to know someone or something for the first time. “Bombshell” is defined by a scandal and the subsequent fallout. It’s a Hollywood look at the lawsuits and investigations that were brought in mid-2016 by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman), after her network contract expired, against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) for sexual harassment. Shrewdly, Carlson sued Ailes directly, but not the network, which would have mired the suit in mandatory arbitration for years. Instead, the direct accusations toward her former boss generated dozens of similar claims from other female colleagues, including then network star Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron). A third female co-lead, Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie), is a composite with characteristics of many other alleged victims of Ailes. “Bombshell” has an amazing cast of actors playing small, real-life roles. Malcolm McDowell (as Rupert Murdoch, named in July 2016 as acting CEO of Fox News, after Ailes resigned due to the sexual harassment accusations), Connie Britton, Alli-

son Janney and Richard Kind grace the screen often, as do several Fox News on-camera personalities from Jeanine Pirro to Bill O’Reilly. Everyone seemingly wants to be in on this story. Kate McKinnon scores a great part as a minor producer who is friends with Robbie’s character and who also hates her employer. I could tell from the moment I saw the “Bombshell” trailer, I thought the movie could be the year’s “The Big Short” or “Vice.” Well, not quite, but it follows in the same vein, of quasidocumentary style filmmaking, though with less humor and no breaking the fourth wall. It succeeds on the strength of casting and tying the lead characters’ fates in with the subsequent U.S. presidential election and the Trump administration. The three leads illustrate the women as all-powerful,

resilient and ambitious in a male-dominated industry and how they fought for their rights in dramatically different ways. Kidman plays Carlson as fierce and antagonistic. Theron’s Kelly is quiet and reserved, showing her approach as keeping the floodgates closed until she intercedes and floods Ailes with an ocean of trouble. Robbie, as a composite, does the part in more symbolic ways. At first, a self-hating victim, reducing eagerness and peppy banner-waving to recrimination and doubt. But, ultimately, the experience is transformative for the character. Writer Charles Randolph, incidentally co-writer of “The Big Short,” and director Jay Roach use the composite role to underscore their eventual statement about the movie, leading into the final titles before credits roll, explaining how Carlson’s original

lawsuit brought down Ailes, who died approximately one year later. Lithgow is tremendous as the old, sickly Ailes. The actor disappears under a sig-

nificant amount of makeup to play the role, but his slick and scheming performance nearly holds its own against the trio of protagonists. Almost.

“Bombshell” runs 108 minutes and is rated R for sexual material and language throughout. I give this film three and a half stars out of four. stars out of four.
