Get ahead of chimney repair this season

Woodburning fireplaces or fuel stoves can add warmth and ambiance to a home. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are do-it-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing away of masonry due to water, weather and time. If enough of the material erodes, that erosion can adversely affect the structural integrity of the chimney. Some repairs can be made by patching up cracks or replacing missing bricks. Chimney tuckpointing is the process of repairing mortar. • Think about waterproofing the chimney to prevent damage. A water sealant applied to the outside of the chimney can prevent moisture from breaking down the masonry. • Inspect and replace the chimney cap if it is worn out. A chimney cap is a contraption that sits atop the chimney to allow the smoke to vent while also preventing critters and water from going inside the flue, helping to extend the flue life. The chimney cap attaches to the flue liner, so outside dimensions should be taken to ensure the cap is the right size for the chimney. • Have the chimney swept. Sweeping helps remove the soot and debris that clings to the inside of the flue, known as creosote. The amount of time the fireplace is used will determine how often the chimney must be cleaned. Generally speaking, the chimney liner needs to be cleaned if it has 1⁄8-inch or more of soot. Regular inspection and maintenance can help keep a chimney working safely for decades. For those who do not like working at such an elevation, leave exterior chimney repair to a certified professional.

7 things to consider when buying a shed Backyard sheds can be useful assets. Sheds can create storage space in the garage, basement or other areas of the house that have become gathering spots for gear typically used outdoors. Sheds are ideal for housing mowers, tools and even pool-care equipment. But they can be put to other uses as well, such as being key spots to engage in hobbies or even as a child’s clubhouse. Various factors should be considered before building or buying a shed. A storage shed can be a significant investment. Once placed, sheds may remain in their dedicated spots for years to come. That means careful thought should go into the planning process. 1. Check your local building codes first. Before you accumulate building materials or order a shed, be sure to know the ins and outs of shed codes. The codes may impact the shed’s placement, construction, the materials used, size, and numerous other factors. It’s much easier to amend plans beforehand than to face the hassle and expense after learning

you did things incorrectly. 2. Choose placement wisely. Spend several days assessing the yard and thinking about the uses for the shed. If you plan to store pool floats and chemicals inside of the shed, it should be located close enough to the pool to be convenient. Look at the lay of the land. If there is a soggy patch of land that can turn swampy under the shed’s foundation, that is a poor location choice. If you need access to electricity, placing it far away from the house could necessitate running expensive wiring. 3. Consider the design. Just because a shed is for storage doesn’t mean aesthetics should be overlooked. Choose a shed style that complements your home. You may also want to match certain architectural features, like arched doorways or dormers. Design also may relate to practicality. For instance, storing a riding mower inside may necessitate dual doors that open widely. 4. Invest in quality materials. Spending a little more and

using quality materials can ensure it lasts long enough to be cost-effective. The right materials will be resistant to splitting, cracking, decay, and insect damage. 5. Prepare the site well. A proper foundation for the shed is almost as important as the shed itself. You cannot just drop the shed on the lawn and leave it, as the shed can sink or structural issues may arise if it is placed on a weak base. 6. Blend into the environment. Surround the shed with shrubs or plants so that it blends into the yard and complements the space. 7. Deck out the interior. Use every storage tool at your disposal to maximize floor, wall and even rafter space for storage. Plan where items will be kept and customize the storage options around those locations. Sheds can be an asset and improve storage capability in the backyard.

DIY projects that can conserve energy around the house Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jawdropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year. Project: Install exterior low-e storm windows. What is it? Low-e windows reflect infrared heat back into a home. Such windows are coated with an ultra-thin layer of metal that improves the window’s insulation ability. How much can I save? Homeowners who install low-e windows can save between 12 and

33 percent on their annual heating and cooling costs.

Project: Seal uncontrolled air leaks. What is it? Air leaks let cool air in during winter and warm air in during summer. Caulking, sealing and weather stripping all cracks and large openings can cut back on air leaks that are costing you money. The DOE recommends hiring a contractor to seal any leaks on heating and cooling ducts. How much can I save? Homeowners who seal uncontrolled air leaks can save between 10 and 20 percent on their annual heating and cooling bills. Project: Plant shade trees. What is it? If you plant a deciduous tree between six and eight feel tall near your home, it will begin to shade your windows within a year of being planted. Depending on the species of the tree and the home, the shade tree will begin shading the roof within five to 10 years. The DOE notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce air conditioning costs. How much can I save? Properly planted shade trees can reduce air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. Project: Insulate the water heater tank What is it? New water tanks are likely already insulated. But homeowners with older hot water tanks can insulate their tanks with a water heater insulating blanket kit. How much can I save? Insulating a water heater tank can save homeowners as much as 16 percent on their annual water heating bills. Even the smallest DIY projects can produce big savings. More information about energy-saving home improvement projects can be found at www.energy.gov.

Recycled Halloween costumes

Nothing says Halloween like the perfect costume. Children may spend months thinking about what they will wear and how they can bring their favorite characters from movies, comics and books to life. Billions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween costumes, advises the National Retail Federation. Many of these costumes are worn just once. The environmental group Recycle Nation states that Halloween costumes are often made with low-value materials like petroleumbased polyester and a mix of other materials. Financially savvy environmentalists may lament that Halloween costumes can be wasteful and potentially harmful to the environment. Recycling and reusing these garments can quell such concerns.

With a little creativity, boxes, paper bags, plastic water bottles, and more can be upcycled into costumes at little or no cost. Afterwards, costumes can be broken down and individual parts can be recycled. Parents also can look for items around the house that potentially can be used to make

Accessories like tiaras, swords, hats, and cloaks also can be sold or swapped. Halloween costumes are easy to enjoy, and those who want to think a little greener can find new ways to get more use out of costumes.

7 uses for fallen leaves By the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to. It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial. 1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter. 2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them. 4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow. 5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight. 6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost. 7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect. Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

Host Halloween for less Halloween marks the first stop on the holiday season highway. It is a time of great excitement and fun for young and old, with costumes, tricks and treats brightening up an autumn day. Hard core Halloween enthusiasts may spend hundreds of dollars each year on decor, costumes and other accessories. But what if there were a way to save on favorite Halloween items? You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy Halloween hijinks. With some innovative and cost-saving ideas, it’s possible to save money, which is always helpful with Thanksgiving and December festivities on the horizon. • Use online resources. There’s a good

chance you can find do-it-yourself project ideas for any number of tasks on your Halloween to-do list. Want to craft an authentic-looking witch’s broom? Need a free pumpkin-carving template? Want to create a haunted house tableau with items you already have in your shed or garage? Do a quick online search to find ways to achieve all of these ideas and more. • Borrow what you need. Each year many parents purchase new costumes for their children that are easily outgrown by the time the next Halloween rolls around. That leads to a surplus of Halloween costumes with little wear and tear. Parents can set up a costume swap with other parents to find

high-quality costumes for their children and often themselves. If a friend is doing a “Grease”-inspired 1950s party and you’re in possession of a “Pink Lady” jacket, offer to lend it out for the party. • Rely on e-vites. Spread the word about your Halloween party or trunk-or-treat event via digital invitations. Many services offer free invitations that don’t require a subscription to their services. Another nocost idea is to download an image from a copyright-free clip-art service and modify it using available phone applications to include party details. Then simply text out your invitation to friends. • Buy in bulk. Pool your spending

resources with other people and utilize wholesale or bulk-buying services to meet your Halloween needs. Consumers can save on the per-item cost when items are purchased in bulk. This can be applied to decorations, food, candy, and more. • Shop candy sales. You already know when Halloween will arrive, so use the months prior to stock up on candy as it goes on sale. This way you need not pay a premium for favorite sweets to give out to trick-or-treaters. These are just a few ways to save on Halloween supplies and still make the day a spooktacular success.

Last month, EXO followed that hot-ticket event with its Race for the Roses Derby Party and most recently EXO threw its Halloween Sexy SPOOKTacular. EXO also is in the latter stages of launching the EXO Foundation, an arm of EXO committed to mentoring and developing underprivileged young women in Edwardsville and surrounding communities. The 12,000-square-foot EXO complex also incorporated a medical day spa, from where a natural

progression is to continue a “staycay” day into evening at EXO’s new outdoor space, an all-weather patio with a 7-foot-tall fire feature, water features and bench seating around uplighting. EXO’s small bites menu includes delicious and light organic fare. Currently EXO is adding Chef Rob

Marbs to its team. He comes to EXO from The Fabulous Fox Theatre. EXO Lounge, open to the public, offers an elegant cocktail bar and EXO Nail Bar’s services include manicure, pedicure, restorative skin care and more — all in space designed carefully for a multi-sensory experience.

“The lounge offers endless possibilities for fun and relaxation for men and women,” Gamblin said. “It is an emergence of cultures and a true destination. “It’s a place where women can come for a girls’ night or guys can grab a drink after a long day golfing. The patio offers a relaxing vibe

to enjoy a drink with friends.” The cocktail lounge and nail bar work in harmony, the latter offering specialized services with iPads and ventilation at each station, and the former offering a cozy, upscale, comfortable space to relax or gather for special occasions with friends and family.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, October 22, 2020 • 19 The nail bar features European seating, from where clients can enjoy a cocktail or non-alcohol-containing beverage, each handmade and organic. EXO Nail Bar iPads make it easy to order a drink and a snack at your fingertips in an aerated environment. Each station has installed a specialized system to filter nail service products. EXO Lounge serves seasonal organic cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine and coffee. During the week, happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. and features live music. EXO’s more than 8,000-square-feet of spa and lounge space was designed and constructed by Edwardsvillebased Contegra Construction Co. “We also are looking to expand locally and nationally,” Gamblin said. “EXO is constantly striving for excellence and, without compromising our core beliefs or business ethics, is determined to blaze a path of growth. “We want to be bigger and better year after year, while never losing our hometown, Midwest values, which is why our flagship location and core investment will always be located here, in Edwardsville.” Currently, EXO is accepting and reviewing applications for EXO growth opportunities, most recently out of Nashville, Tennessee, and Charleston, South Carolina, and reviewing locations for EXO corporate destinations. In anticipation of this expansion, EXO expects a workforce growth of approximately 10% and an increase in both service offerings and product of between 8% and 10%, Gamblin said. EXO Nail Bar features elegant finishes, including recessed and vaulted ceilings, gold accented seating and ornate chandeliers, for a dazzling effect. Vibrant, patterned floor tiles complement the interior to enliven the atmosphere. The nail bar also features a state-of-the-art audiovisual system, which includes a video wall of multiple screens. EXO Lounge features warm interior colors, including a bar top of black Cambria quartz, rich velvet seating, black onyx-style flooring and the 2,000-square-foot outdoor patio space with fire pits. Watch The Gardens grow

The Gardens at SIUE celebrates 30th anniversary By Scott Marion smarion@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, The Gardens at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is still going strong as it celebrates a milestone. The Gardens at SIUE, which began in 1990 as the Donal G. Myer Arboretum, is marking its 30th anniversary this month. The 36-acre botanical garden serves a dual function as a living laboratory for education and research at SIUE, and as a place of beauty for the university population and the general public to enjoy. A group of master gardeners and master naturalists, mostly retirees, are responsible for planning, planting and maintaining the grounds since the university suffered a budget crunch four years ago. “It’s a wonderful milestone,” said The Gardens Marian Smithson, who was co-coordina-

tor of volunteers for 10 years. “Prior to the time that master gardeners and master naturalists were approved to work in the gardens, which was about ten years ago, there were so many community people who invested a lot of labor and financial resources to develop the garden,” she explained. “They are the ones responsible for taking it from being an arboretum to ‘The Gardens,’ as we know it now.” In 2016, the Illinois state budget crisis brought about severely reduced funding for The Gardens. Edwardsville Mayor Hal Patton proposed that the city take over the site’s care and a survey was done of Edwardsville citizens. An initial city council vote regarding leasing of The Gardens appeared to be approved, but was later reversed, and the university never leased The Gardens to the city. Instead, the master gardeners and master naturalists took over its operation.

“During the state financial crisis, the university had to release the director in 2016, and in 2017, the gardens’ manager was released, along with all of the student workers,” said Smithson, who is the former director of financial aid at SIUE and is still the chair of The Gardens at SIUE Advisory Board. “All you had left as labor to take care of The Gardens were the fellows that run the large-scale mowers around the outside,” Smithson recalled. “The whole interior of the gardens might have been left to turn into a weed pasture, but the master gardeners and master naturalists told the university that if they let us still come, we would put in as much labor as we can.” The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly everything on the SIUE campus, and The Gardens is no exception. “We usually have about thirty volunteers, but it’s hard to get people together now because of the pandemic,” said current volunteer coordinator Carol Gardner, “and we have not been able to get all of our volunteers there. We usually plan all winter and we normally would have been in the gardens in March, but that’s when our extension leaders of the University of Illinois told us to shut it down. “We normally would have been planting in April and May, but we weren’t able to

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, October 22, 2020 • 21 get in until July,” she explained. “It looked kind of rough for a while, but we have been working hard. We don’t have a full crew (of volunteers), but we have eight or ten people and it looks pretty good now.” Among the many features of The Gardens at SIUE is the Hardy Family Wind Forest, which features a set of kinetic sculptures that are set in motion by the wind; the Butterfly Garden, which was added in 2014; and, the Prairie Portal, a one-acre garden created by the Edwardsville Rotary Club. Those also are among the features being upgraded by the volunteer crew. “Last fall, we killed everything in the Hardy Family Wind Forest and started over,” said Gardner, a retired teacher. “We removed the bulbs and had volunteers plant them in other places around the garden. We planted close to one-thousand new native plants and it looks beautiful now in its first year. “We’re also working on redoing the Butterfly Garden,” she said. “We started planting last winter, and that got stopped. So, it will probably be finished this next winter. We’re also looking to redesign the Prairie Portal.” Last winter, The Gardens at SIUE ordered 30 trees from Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, which donates trees to various organizations. “We usually order trees from them every year, but this year we ordered thirty to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary,” Gardner

said. “They have been planted by three of our master naturalists.” Volunteers at The Gardens typically work on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. “If not for the pandemic, we would have ten or twelve master gardeners out there on Tuesdays, and now we have six or eight,” Gardner said. “On Thursdays, we have a group of master naturalists, who work more with the trees and the prairie.” The volunteer crew’s dedication was exemplified by the late Bill Hanke, who served as co-coordinator of volunteers with Smithson. “Bill and I were asked if we would continue to lead (after the budget crisis) and at that point, we had about twenty-five volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” said Smithson of Hanke, who died April 3 at age 72. “Bill and I agreed to be the links between those volunteers and the campus. “I was doing a little more of the things related to the university, but Bill was doing lots of work on the grounds,” Smithson noted. “When I think about him, I can see him filling truck after truck full of mulch and putting the volunteers to work. We still don’t have any paid staff members.” Anyone interested in volunteering at The Gardens at SIUE, contact Gardner at cegardner@charter.net or stop by one of the volunteer work sessions Tuesday or Thursday

mornings. “You do not have to be a master gardener or master naturalist to volunteer, and we’ve had people in the community from time to time who just want to come out and work,” Gardner said. “You can show up on Tuesday or Thursday at around 8:30 in the morning. We meet at the garden center and there is always someone around.” Smithson stressed that volunteer work is not limited to individuals. “Church groups, school groups and scout groups can come out and help us on a particular day, as long as we can provide someone from the regular crews to supervise them,” she said. To donate to The Gardens at SIUE through the SIUE Foundation, visit www.siue.edu. com and specify The Gardens at SIUE. “That’s especially important at this time because we’re really hurting for money,” Gardner said. The University of Illinois Extension certifies master gardeners and master naturalists for The Gardens at SIUE through a program the university runs. “One of the tenets of their volunteering at different sites in the community is that they don’t get involved in fundraising,” Smithson said. “The purpose of the advisory board is to help with fundraising.”

Shane Paul McGhie, left, and Richard Jenkins, right, in “The Last Shift.” (Sony Pictures|For The Edge)

‘Last Shift’ a last ditch effort to enjoy movie-going

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — This can’t be sustainable. As usual, I was plotting my week out by incorporating the dates, times, and titles for

my movie-going adventures. But, lo, it’s not so simple anymore. With AMC closing most of its theaters for parts of last week (Edwardsville last Wednesday and Thursday; East Alton last Monday through Thursday), and most others offering only a

reduced slate of lackluster movies in the evening hours, choosing a flick has been a challenge. Last Tuesday, for instance, there was exactly one showing of one movie within 75 miles of here in the format I preferred to see it and I had to drive all the way to Creve Coeur, a St. Louis suburb, to watch it. I also had to provide my name and telephone number for contact-tracing purposes when I went in. Going to the ole moviehouse used to be a rather covert activity. I liked the “sneaky” nature of it. Not so much anymore. The great Richard Jenkins stars in “The Last Shift” as Stanley, an aging fast-food worker who has been slinging sandwiches at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish since he dropped out of high school 38 years ago. In his world, Stanley is king. He’s the guy who can fix the sink and save the

pickle budget and keep the midnight shift running smoothly, all by himself. But this is Stanley’s last week at Oscar’s. After Monday’s shift (“technically Tuesday morning according to payroll”), he’s setting off for sunny Florida to rescue his ailing mother from her nursing home and settle them into an apartment so he can care for her full time. With this objective, a certain parallel can be drawn between Stanley’s movie and “Midnight Cowboy,” but don’t wander too far off on this train of thought. During his final week, Stanley is responsible for training Jevon (Shane Paul McGhie), a recently paroled young black man who will be replacing him on overnights. The tense encounter, terse friendship, suspect parting and lasting impression that Stanley and Jevon leave on each other form the basis of this dark comedy, which

defines itself through realistic and hand-held shooting. Stylistically, “The Last Shift” reminded me a lot of “Sideways,” but was nowhere near the quality. In fact, relevant statements about race and poverty aside, “The Last Shift” is really best served as a character study of the broken man, which Stanley is. He’s sad and lonely and pathetic and borderline imbecilic, but that’s in Jenkins’ wheelhouse. He can play sincere characters as well as anyone can. Jenkins’ first Oscar nomination for 2007’s “The Visitor” is a beautiful drama with similar themes to “The Last Shift.” Here, though, there’s no great redemption for Stanley. His best success in life is playing darts on Friday with his buddy Dale (a particularly scruffy Ed O’Neill) who pays for the Mountain Dew. “The Last Shift” isn’t

terrible, even if it punts meaningful character development for Jevon. In fact, it’s probably a lot better than most of the other movies out there (i.e. the ones you don’t recognize by name). Without Hollywood’s attempt to release any titles of note in the coming months, I would imagine it’s only going to get worse. I thought the pandemic closures made this hobby of mine a nightmare, but this period now also is a challenge. A day of reckoning is here for cinemas. It was a long time coming. I hope to one day be writing about the great renaissance of the motion picture and its trumpeted return to a theater near you. “The Last Shift” runs 90 minutes and is rated R for language and some drug use. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Food For Thought… with Vicki Bennington

Foundry Public House — oh là là!

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

while he may not have been channeling France, he enjoyed it. The Paris Eggs Benedict started with a split, toasted croissant (who would have thought to do that, and who would have known how scrumptious toasting would make it taste?). Layered on top was baked ham and two sunny side-up eggs (one on each half), then it was all topped with what I would describe as a mild hollandaise sauce. Most definitely “oh là là!” Now most people would have let it come as stated on the menu — with brie. I got it without, and even my husband, who is definitely a cheese lover, tasted mine and said next time he’s having what I had. That’s not to say his breakfast flatbread wasn’t good. He stressed that it was, with its sausage gravy, bacon bits, scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese on top of a classic flatbread. Other brunch items included a Foundry platter — traditional eggs, breakfast meat and toast, PB and J French toast, Foundry breakfast sandwich, sweet potato hash, johnny cakes, chicken and biscuits, and several sides to choose from. Now I’m not suggesting that Foundry Public House is like a French café, but I think it’s a plus that the outdoor seating lends itself to that feel — at least midday on a Sunday — and made for

EDWARDSVILLE — As we walked into the outdoor seating area at Foundry Public House it had a bit of a Parisian street café kind of vibe. Tables interspersed (6 feet apart) with shade umbrellas set the scene at the Downtown Edwardsville eatery, for a recent Sunday morning when my husband and I decided to venture out for a meal. It was actually late enough in the morning that I wasn’t sure if we would be eating lunch or brunch, but when we perused the touchless menus Vicki on our iPhones after scanning Bennington the QR code located on the table, I spotted the “Paris Eggs Benedict,” and my decision was quickly made. In keeping with the feeling of a French café, the pleasant breeze and moderate early October temperatures added to the ambience at the Foundry’s outdoor seating, nestled in a sort of alleyway between its main building and a neighboring brick structure. My husband chose the brunch flatbread, and

a pleasant experience in the midst of our new normal, especially where outdoor dining is concerned. Inside, Foundry Public House is more of an upscale bar, with a bit of an industrial type of feel. And American fare is on the menu for lunch and dinner. Of course, you can still use the outdoor seating, which is fairly extensive, and, when weather permits, live bands play on the patio. Burgers, sandwiches, flatbreads and salads are fresh and made in house. Appetizers, like, cheese fondue with house-made pretzel sticks, fried pickles or shrimp skewers, are a nice start before choosing the main fare. Hearty appetites may need the Foundry burger, with two patties, blue cheese steak butter, balsamic onions, cheddar cheese, bacon, bibb lettuce, pickles and tomato. Or there’s the turkey burger with blue cheese crumbles, blackened Mahi Mahi po’boy, chicken parm sandwich or chicken cordon bleu. The double smoked BLT sounds good to me (a tried-andtrue BLT lover), and if you’re looking for something light, go with a seasoned chicken breast and steamed broccoli. The bar has a lot to offer, too, with around 16 different drafts and dozens of bottled selections. Wine, tasty martini choices, several whiskies, and scotch and bourbon selections are also on the list. I like that Foundry serves dessert, too. You don’t always have that option at a bar and grill, but if the need for something sweet comes over you, there’s cheesecake, brownie à la mode or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Foundry Public House opened in 2016 in the former Robust Wine Bar location at 126 N. Main St. For more information, visit foundrypublichouse. com. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home.
