“There’s dozens of axe throwing places. But a lot are just wooden targets and chain-link fences. We wanted to be more than just wood on a wall.” Patrons can bring in their own food or order from the several new eateries that have made Eastgate Plaza their home, such as the Blue Ice Creamery, Mr. Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant and Grill and J.J. Thermo’s Bar and Grill. Riverbend Axe Throwing is also registered with the World Axe Throwing League (WATL). The global governing body of urban axe throwing was founded in 2017 by representatives from the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Ireland. It represents 19 axe throwing nations and more than 130 member companies. “We are the only ones in the St. Louis region who can say we’re affiliated with them right now,” Brynildsen said. “People can throw here locally and compete nationwide. “It’s like darts on steroids,” he said. “Any game you play with darts, you can play with

The Brynildsens discovered the team sport when Erika Brynildsen took Dan axe throwing for his birthday. “We like to do active things,” she said. “It really is like the new bowling or darts league.” Her husband said he liked and appreciated the concept so much that, while working his day job for TD Ameritrade, he took his teams from Dallas and Omaha, respectively, axe throwing for team-building exercises.

who’s a full-time registered nurse at Mercy Hospital, first responders and active or veteran military. Axe-throwing also has been extremely popular for bachelorette parties and girls’ nights out. “It’s not just for lumberjacks,” Dan Brynildsen said. “We designed this intentionally for a great place to hang out.” The Brynildsens — who grew up in the Riverbend and graduated in the early 2000s from Alton High School — are using their platform to give back to communities, too. “We are in partnership with a different Riverbend charity every month and give 10 percent of our profits to that charity,” Dan Brynildsen said. “One of our big things is to give back. It’s our tithe, part of our faith to

give back what God’s given us. “It’s great to see the revitalization of Eastgate Plaza,” he said, “which Todd and Julie Kennedy have done. It’s Todd’s vision for this to be an entertainment plaza and this fits right in with that vision. I played ice hockey right here in Eastgate, still do.” Now the Brynildsens live in Glen Carbon with their four children, ages 2, 4, 6 and 8. Riverbend Axe Throwing’s hours are 5-10 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday, 2-8 p.m. Sunday and any other time by reservation. ‘Midway’ joins list of great WWII movies By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

“Midway” was a number one hit in theaters for the recent Veterans Day holiday weekend and I was just as surprised as anyone. The trailer had that rough, “junior varsity” quality look to the production value, but I was more than surprised at the finished product. It’s not the best war picture ever made, or even about this particular battle, but the way that “Midway” manages to fill you with pride for the U.S. Navy is an enviable aftereffect of an invigorating afternoon at the movies. I work closely with two women who are Navy members’ dependents (one a daughter, the other a widowed spouse) and I was quick to recommend this movie to them for exactly that reason. “Midway” begins as the Japanese are infamously attacking Pearl Harbor early on a Sunday morning and without any warning. The horrific act precipitates America’s involvement in World War II and it’s been covered numerous times in other features, like, 2001’s “Pearl Harbor” and the classic, 1953’s “From Here to Eternity.” I’ve noted that other critics have been down on the computer-generated effects used to reenact the battle sequences in this movie, calling them out as nothing more than “video game lite.” I can see that perspective, but I also think that it carries with it some sway of realism that director Roland Emmerich was surely going for. His name above the title has always stood for loud, explosive movie making and that was part of the appeal to me the afternoon I saw this when I needed a few hours of cinema therapy. “Midway” features a huge ensemble cast and I

was especially delighted for the history lesson that put each character into a larger context via on-screen biographies at the end of the film. The story follows a group of naval aviators (Ed Skrein, Darren Criss, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, Keean Johnson) under the command of Vice Admiral William “Bull” Halsey (Dennis Quaid) as they work to locate the Japanese carrier fleet as it navigates the Pacific Ocean. With the technology of yesterday, it was like hunting a needle in a haystack. Hoping to make their job easier, Combat Intelligence Officer Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson) uses his knowledge of Japanese tactics to work with radio encryption analysts, under the command of American naval officer and codebreaker Joseph Rochefort (Brennan Brown) to leverage an advantage in the next battle. Layton knows Midway Island is the target and he can’t let them be caught off guard again. The whole thing is supervised by Admiral Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson), head of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The movie’s events are concurrent to and follow the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle (Aaron Eckhart). Eckhart’s performance is small and affecting, but the events of the raid are fully explored in Spencer Tracy’s 1944 movie, “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.” Mandy Moore plays a Navy wife to one of the pilots. She may have been born to play a doting, worrying housewife. Famed Hollywood director John Ford, also a Navy man, is renowned for John Wayne Westerns and a record win of four Oscars for Best Directing. But as a reservist commander, Ford spent his active years mak-

ing documentaries and morale-boosting propaganda films for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). And, in this year’s “Midway,” Ford (Geoffrey Blake) makes a cameo, which was a real punch-up treat. Most spectacularly, Ford actually was at Midway, a coral atoll, filming from

atop a power plant on the atoll’s Sand Island, the real Japanese attack. He was wounded in the arm during the process, but he got the footage and used it for both 1942’s “The Battle of Midway” and “December 7th: The Movie,” a 1943 propaganda film produced by the Navy.

I referenced a lot of other movies in this week’s review and I realize I tend to do that a lot. But, these men and women, and their lives, have been referred to as the Greatest Generation. It was for movie making, too. I hope you take the time to check some of them out on Netflix, Turner Classic Mov-

ies, or anywhere else the great American art form of film is as cherished and perpetuated as it is in this space each week. ”Midway” runs 138 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of war violence and related images, language and smoking. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.
