Regional tourist attraction takes riders to the sky

Grafton SkyTour celebrates official grand opening with officials, owners

By Jeanie Stephens The Edge

GRAFTON — The grand opening of the Grafton SkyTour aerial lift, an endeavor approximately four years in the making, recently celebrated a grand opening, now open as the latest attraction with Aerie’s Resort in Grafton. The aerial lift, a combination of enclosed gondolas and open-air chair lifts,

became operational a little more than two weeks ago and has already served a significant amount of traffic. “People have very much enjoyed it, especially the kids,” said lift operator Velne Hoge. “The last two weekends, we’ve put on over 4,000 people. They just drive by, see the lift here and stop.” Last weekend, more than 2,400 people rode the 300-foot incline to Aerie’s Resort, with approximately 6,000 riders total so

far. “The last couple of weeks, people have seen the impact that it’s had,” said J.D. Lorton, Director of Operations for Aerie’s Resort. “It’s bringing money. Hopefully, in the spring, we’ll get the shuttle system in, to go with this, and everybody will benefit.” Lorton’s father, Jeff Lorton, first initiated the idea with the city of Grafton, which led to extensive research, multiple trips to research destinations and planning over the duration of the project. “This is a tremendous day for the city of Grafton,” said Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin. “When Jeff came to a committee here four years ago and asked about the possibility of doing something like this, there were a few who said, ‘Boy, that sounds great,’ and there were several who said, ‘You gotta be crazy.’ “Well, if you know Jeff, he is a little crazy. He dreams big.” City officials expect that the new lift will extend tourism season into the fall and winter months, enhancing other attractions in the city and the region, including

the numerous guest houses, restaurants, and Mississippi and Illinois river recreation. “We’ve had an amazing response,” J.D. Lorton said. “It all came together and it’s going to be a great attraction for our area and our region. I think with the combination of the shuttle service, the city of Grafton and every business is going to benefit. In doing that, it’s a win-win for everybody.” Lorton also plans to incorporate mountain bike trails into the terrain and a mill with an upstairs guest house along a creek on the Aerie’s Resort property. He hopes to have both projects completed by spring 2020.

“If tourism is our industry, we need to put things in this region that attract it,” he said. The Grafton SkyTour is open noon-6

p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Tickets cost $10 for a round trip pass. Season passes cost $29 per person.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Give me a slice of ice cream!

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

OK. So, maybe this is just us, but neither I nor my husband had ever heard of totally flattening a cardboard box containing ice cream and then slicing a piece off the end with a knife, as if the frozen confection was a piece of cake. As the popular saying goes, “We were today years old when Vicki we learned Bennington about this.” Actually, we were watching an episode of “This Is Us,” not long ago, and Uncle Nicky, the otherwise socially awkward uncle, who lives all alone in a trailer in the woods, showed his nephew how it was done when he was a child. Who would have thought he’d be the one to teach us something new that day? As I investigated it a little more, I discovered that Milo Ventimiglia (he plays Jack on “This Is Us,” and directed the particular episode, “Storybook Love,” that included the ice cream segment) remembered one of his grandparents slicing the ice cream this way in real life, and thought it would be a good addition to the show. He didn’t know it would cause such a

stir — at least in the Bennington household. Further research unveiled an old advertisement for Sealtest ice cream that shows “slices” of ice cream in the photo, as opposed to the traditional “scoops” that we think of today. We wanted to experience these slices ourselves, and we especially wanted to look at the box, which according to Nicky, was designed to be open in such a manner to expose the block of ice cream and make it ripe for slicing. How could we have missed this? How could our parents have missed it? We always had ice cream in cardboard boxes, but it usually seemed to present the problem of whether we should open it on the end or from the side. Nobody ever considered flattening it. The first place we ran into a problem was at the grocery store — or I should say grocery stores. The first couple that we visited had no cardboard box ice cream. Somehow, they had stealthily went out of production, and we hadn’t even noticed. I won’t say where we couldn’t find it, but

I will say that finally, we found two choices at Walmart. These were both the Great Value brand: one – vanilla, the other – Neapolitan. Just for added fun, and thinking the tri-color slice would look pretty in the bowl, I bought the Neapolitan. Second problem, the box didn’t seem to unfold quite as gracefully and cooperatively as Nicky’s did but, in the end, we had a flat piece of cardboard with a block of ice cream in the center. We cut our slices which, evidently, the size is supposed to indicate how good you were that day. We both decided we were evenly matched in the “good” department for the day, and sat down to eat our carefully proportioned “pieces” of ice cream. It was good, and I like the idea of it, but we decided it is easier and more conducive to eating when in “scoop” form. You’ll have to give it a try and decide for yourself. Dazzle your children or grandchildren with this amazing trick. Reward them for good behavior with a larger piece than their naughty

brother or sister. I don’t know, make up a game that revolves around slice size. Impress everyone when serving cake and ice cream in a new way at your next birthday party. If nothing else, it was a fun experiment. Incidentally, you are then left with the dilemma of whether you should go ahead and eat the entire block of ice cream or find a container that will seal it for storage. I found a Tupperware container that worked well, and I do remember that, at least at one time, Tupperware had what was called an ice cream storage container. Maybe

they knew then about the cardboard box trick, and I just didn’t realize it. I don’t believe they sell it any longer. See? TV is educational. If we hadn’t watched that show, we would have never known about this little-known ice cream phenomena. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants, to chef conversations, new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas, questions or suggestions.

Step back in time in 1858 house

Always home for the holidays

Restored 1858 structure on village’s annual house tour Dec. 7

One year later, they are more settled with their wide-ranging collections of antiques, artwork, clocks, wooden boxes, Santas, baby cups, clocks, you name it. Their interests run the gamut, far and wide, with fascinating pieces that meld together in an attractive, eclectic style. “Kirk has a knack for arranging a lot of art, furniture and pieces in little ‘vignettes’ that somehow make it all work,” Cindy said. “We do have a lot of collections and antiques and artwork, but the house itself is such a showpiece.” The wide woodwork, built-in bookcases, hardwood floors and sweeping staircase are all aspects of the home that add a certain kind of charm that is hard to find in newer construction. There’s just an oldworld feeling that can’t be duplicated. But even if the house can stand on its own merits, the Versemans couldn’t help but fill it with all the treasures they have lovingly and carefully collected from their extensive travels over the years. The home was built by the Onetto family in the 1850s, who didn’t add the majestic widow’s walk until the 1880s. In the early 1900s, it became the Village Inn. Later, Principia College bought it, and for at least part of the 40 years that it was owned by the

college, it served as a dining hall for students. It became a single-family home once again, when in the early ’70s, two Principia French professors — Ned and Paula Bradley — purchased it and did a major renovation. A little over a year ago, the Versemans joined the ranks of owners. Interestingly enough, the house is built with two stories facing the front, and three in the back, the lower level housing the family’s hearth room and huge kitchen that then spills out to a New Orleans-inspired stone and brick courtyard. The home’s brickwork was made using bricks that were manufactured in the Elsah community. Since retiring from the Missouri Floor Co., the 109-year-old Verseman family business, Kirk said he’s taken more of an interest in cooking, spending more time in the extensively outfitted kitchen, that is usually the family hangout when friends, children and grandchildren come to visit, or even when it’s just the two of them. In nicer weather, they spill out to the stone courtyard, where passersby often extend a wave or stop in to say hello. Cindy is semi-retired. A former pre-Kindergarten teacher, she is now the music teacher at Village Lutheran Church in St Louis. And they’ve tried their hand at other “kinds” of living, spending a few years in a huge penthouse apartment in St. Louis, then moving to a modern condo in Chesterfield, Mis-

souri, before landing in the charming ambience that is the village of Elsah. They walk to the Elsah United Methodist Church, they walk to the post office, and they can now walk to their newly opened gallery and antique shop, Elsah Galleries, just a couple of doors down from their home. A portion of the Verseman home will be open for the Historic Elsah Foundation’s Home for the Holidays tour on Saturday, Dec. 7. Elsah Galleries also will be open the day of the tour. The tour will run from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance, and $18 on the day of the event. Advance

ELSAH — Cindy and Kirk Verseman have been longtime visitors to Elsah and the surrounding region. In fact, Kirk said they had one of their first meals (chicken dinner) as a married couple, 41 years ago, at Pere Marquette Lodge. Consequently, it’s not really surprising that, as they approached retirement, their thoughts began to drift to the east side of the Mississippi River, purchasing a home that is scheduled on the upcoming Historic Elsah Foundation’s Home for the Holidays tour on Saturday, Dec. 7. Before buying the 1858 house, they decided to give Elsah living a bit of a trial run, renting a historic dwelling in the village for two years. During that time, they really got to know the place, and it wasn’t long before “everybody knew their name.” That’s the kind of place Elsah is. A community that has always been close-knit, yet welcoming, whether a neighbor, a fellow resident, or a visitor, and when the couple saw that the former Village Inn was up for sale, they bought it. A stop on the Home for Holidays Tour again this year, the two were actually brave enough to have one floor open for the tour last year, just one week after moving in.

tour tickets are available at www.historicelsah.org/tour, at the Alton Visitors Center or My Just Desserts, in Alton, or Elsah General Store, Green Tree Inn or Maple Leaf Cottage, in Elsah. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event, pre-paid tickets can be picked up at the civic center (the old school house) at 51 Mill St. Ticket price includes a self-guided house tour, musical entertainment at the two churches and a ride in a horsedrawn carriage. My Just Desserts will provide a fixed-price lunch for $11 at Farley’s Music Hall from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

ates Elsah General Store, and is the secretary of the Historic Elsah Foundation, said people love walking around Elsah, feeling the presence of the past. “It’s really one of Elsah’s best days every year,” Smith said. “We’ve been fortunate that, even though it is the first part of December, it is usually a lovely day for taking a walk through the village.” The homes on the tour were generally constructed in the mid-19th century, many using stone from the

local quarry. Elsah has maintained its mid-1850s feeling and appearance, and offers a sense of going back in time. The village is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Elsah Foundation was incorporated in 1971 as a nonprofit organization. Its purpose is the preservation and enhancement of the historic buildings, houses, architecture and culture of Elsah, through the encouragement of historical research on the village and other nearby historic areas. The founda-

tion sponsors research projects, educational meetings, house tours and walking tours, and is a co-sponsor of the Village of Elsah Museum. Historic Elsah Foundation celebrates, educates and preserves the buildings in the village of Elsah. In addition to the homes on the tour, other points of interest in Elsah, which are open to all, are the Village Museum, Farley’s Music Hall, Elsah General Store, the Village Civic Center and historic school room, Maple Leaf Cottage Inn and Green Tree Inn.

“We do have a lot of collections and antiques and artwork, but the house itself is such a showpiece.” — Cindy Verseman

‘Ford v Ferrari’ first rate

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, November 28, 2019 • 23

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

I loved “Ford v Ferrari” and it’s a fantastic movie to see on a big screen with a superior sound system. It’s got a great message about sportsmanship and competition, revolving around a story that features two true co-leads, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, both of whom are outstanding. It’s also a fairly interesting biopic about nonNASCAR automobile racing. And, if you don’t see an amazing line of humor running through the narrative, then maybe you need a tune-up. This is a first rate picture. With the Baby Boom generation getting behind the wheel of their first cars in the middle 1960s, Ford Motor Co. is struggling to see returns, like they’d had in the heyday of Henry Ford. His grandson, Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts), is loud, pompous and he demands results. One day his rookie marketing head, a fellow named Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal), gives a pitch about getting the stalwart American company into the international marketplace by backing a racing team that can

create a car to win France’s 24 Hours of Le Mans against a perennial winner from Ferrari. Iacocca’s aim is to get a big win, ratchet up interest in the sexy new Ford models, and cash in for a long career in the industry. To do so, Ford needed to build a new car from the ground up. Enter Carroll Shelby (Damon). I first heard the name of this monumentally important car designer when I fell in love with the 2000 remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds.” The 1967 Mustang GT500 in that movie is one of Shelby’s seminal works. Nicolas Cage made it look like a whole lot of fun to drive it and I haven’t shaken the desire myself in 20 years. Shelby was a successful racer in his youth, until a heart condition moved him from the track to the garage. Damon’s portrayal of the plucky Texan is with heart and a thick, honey-coated accent that suits the actor and the role. As Shelby and his lead engineer (Ray McKinnon) get their design off the drawing board, a dawning realization comes that they’re not going to win Le Mans in 1966 without a driver that can be as revolutionary as their concept car. Ken Miles (Bale) ended up being that guy. Miles was journeyman driver by the time he became the chief automotive test driver for Shelby American. Leading up to Le Mans in ‘66, he won the two other preeminent

A scene featuring co-leads Matt Damon, left, and Christian Bale in “Ford v Ferrari.” (Twentieth Century Fox|For The Edge)

long-duration races in that same season (one in Daytona and the other in Sebring, Florida). The last 40 minutes of “Ford v Ferrari” is all about watching Bale chew the scenery from within the cockpit of his Ford Mark II as, due to an early malfunction, he battles to compete neck and neck with his fellow racers. His goal ultimately to get a big lead that all but disappears because of some questionable moves by Ford executive Leo Beebe (Josh Lucas). But Ferrari was never Miles’ true competitor. His biggest nemesis was his own determination to find “the perfect lap” of the grand prix road course. Stellar supporting roles are performed by Caitriona Balfe and Noah Jupe as Miles’ wife, Mollie, and son, Peter. Sure, I loved the humor and the complex immediacy of the racing scenes but, for me, this movie really thrives on the strength of its two stars. Bale and Damon spark greatness in each other like fantastic pairs of movie duos who came before. Think Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in “A Star is Born” or Redford and Newman in “The Sting.” If you’re waiting in the pits to go see “Ford v Ferrari,” take the advice Shelby offers Miles mid-film: “Go like hell!” to see it. “Ford v Ferrari” runs 152 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some language and peril. I give this film four stars out of four.

Our hearing healthcare experts are dedicated to providing the best patient care for our community. We work closely with each patient’s physician to ensure comprehensive treatment. We will send hearing evaluation results to any physician designated by our patient.

Your results belong to you. We will provide a copy of your diagnostic results to you, upon request.

Live Local, Care Local. There is no need to go out of town for hearing healthcare. We have three convenient locations and every member of our team is committed to providing the best care possible for every person that walks through our door.

We provide comprehensive audiological evaluations, tinnitus evaluations, and individualized treatment plans.

We utilize real ear verification measurements to guarantee your hearing aids are properly prescribed to your hearing loss.

No gimmicks, no pressure, and no hidden fees.

We want to thank our patients for voting for us to win the Best of the Best in the Riverbend Area. We truly appreciate the opportunity to serve our community.
