The Ink House opens big with first event By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EDWARDSVILLE — What better way to open a house than with some charming pieces of shabby chic furniture? The Ink House, a new Edwardsville event center, will host its debut event, Restore Décor’s “Heart for Our Community” annual fundraiser, this weekend in the venue’s 5,000-plus square feet of event space and additional lounge space. Heart for Our Community guests can enjoy complimentary beverages and the opportunity to purchase Restore Décor furniture pieces created exclusively for the event. “We are raising money to cover our operational expenses for the year,” said Restore Décor founder and Executive Director Dana Adams, “to pay rent for our work space on Main Street, utilities, gasoline, paint and supplies. So the more expenses we can cover, the more we can give away to families and serve people in need. “It’s twofold, really,” explained Adams, of Edwardsville, who also is the retail store’s volunteer manager. “Heart for Our Community is a yearly celebration for all we’ve been able to accomplish together as a community.” The Ink House event center will offer a balance of historical significance and contemporary charm in the heart of Downtown. The Ink House was previously known for decades as a place that housed creative writing and the printing production of Edwardsville’s newspaper, The Intelligencer, which relocated over the summer to 116 N. Main St. Thus, the new upscale Ink House pays homage to the historic space in the names of its main event space, The Headliner, its lounge space, The Press Room, and women’s and men’s restrooms, The Gossip Column and The Sports Room, respectively. So it’s no surprise that The Ink House’s inaugural event is community-oriented as part the Restore Décor ministry’s 2020 effort. Heart for Our Community will help raise funds for Restore Décor, in a reversal that will help the nonprofit with operational costs for its retail store, where Restore Décor raises money through sales of upcycled furniture for other nonprofits, families in need and individuals all year round. The fundraising event starts at 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, with a reception at Restore Décor’s retail shop — right next door — at 111 N. Second St. The Ink House doors open at 6:30 p.m. at 117 N. Second St. where Edwardsville’s newest Downtown venue will keep the newspaper’s former entrance at 117 N. Second St. “We help a lot of sick kiddos who need help who we hear about through the school district and mostly families in need,” Adams said. The Restore Décor evening event also includes food, a cash bar, silent auction items and a program featuring Restore Décor volunteers and fundraiser recipients, which include local nonprofits that reach out to Restore Décor, tell its board what their needs are in a request for help and go through an application process. Entertainment features live music from The Love Your Neighbor Project, a band led by Mike Sonderegger, of Metro Community Church, in Edwardsville. Tickets cost $50 and still are available by contacting at restoredecoredwardsville@gmail. com or Restore Décor, 111 N. Second St.
“A lot of people recognize Mike because he’s the music director at the church and does a lot of the Wildey’s Dueling Piano events,” Adams noted. “He’s a local favorite.” Restore Décor, which held its annual fundraiser at The Wildey Theatre for the last two years, is as excited to help showcase the brand new venue as The Ink House is to host Restore Décor. “Our first event is a chance to debut and to see inside our event center,” said Hannah Fink, who co-owns The Ink House with Kristen Pfund. “We are in phase one and the majority is in, ready to go,” she said, “but, we are making some additions and adding a black metal flat awning.” Fink and Pfund noticed that The Intelligencer was moving out of its longtime home in the building owned by Pfund and her husband, Matt, of Edwardsville-based Pfund Construction, and the women’s wheels started turning for their new business, owned solely by the pair. Incidentally, Fink said a new law firm going in at 115 N. Second St. Fink, who works for Gori, Realtors and does all of its photography, shot the “before” photos of The Intelligencer’s move. “I asked the Pfunds what they were doing with the building,” Fink recalled. “They said, ‘We don’t know,” and I said, ‘Do not turn it into offices, we need a dedicated event-specific space, especially in Downtown Edwardsville.’ “When I sent an email off to them, Matt was on it,” Fink said. “Kristen said the same exact thing, so we came up with this and named it The Ink House because of The Intelligencer.” When the ceiling tiles came out, the space really opened up.

“It caught our eye and we needed this space to be something that was lacking in Edwardsville,” Fink explained. “It’s an upscale, modern space with an industrial feel and mid-century flair.” Just inside the front door, The Ink House’s event cocktail lounge, named The Press Room, features velvet couches and chairs for guests to get away from a large crowd for a break, a photo booth and a portable bar. The restrooms are situated nearby, with a larger salon-style women’s room so that guests can comfortably touch up their makeup and powder their noses. The main space, named The Headliner, generously accommodates 250 people, but also can be divided for smaller events, such as bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, corporate gatherings and more. Event organizers can hire their own licensed and insured caterer. The Ink House operates its own full-service bar, which offers special packages. “Those are flexible to work within budgets,” Fink noted. “There’s no event we would not consider having here,” Kristen Pfund said. A massive, showy safe, used by The Intelligencer, remains in the building where it is retained as a centerpiece in the lounge. In the rear of the building, a prep area is available for caterers, florists, etc., which Pfund noted is not a kitchen. And parking? No problem. “We are not worried about parking for any of the events,”
The home of The Ink House Event Center, located at St. Louis and Second streets in Downtown Edwardsville, underwent a complete interior remodel after the former occupant, The Intelligencer, relocated to 116 N. Main St. last summer. The Ink House owners, Kristen Pfund and Hannah Fink, came up with the new venue’s name because it was the hometown newspaper’s longtime home. A massive safe, used by The Intelligencer, remains in the building where it is retained as a centerpiece in The Ink House’s lounge, named The Press Room.

Edwardsville’s Restore Décor, a different kind of resale shop All of Restore Décor’s upcycled, repurposed furniture pieces for sale have been donated. Restore Décor, founded by its executive director, Dana Adams, maintains a workshop at 223 N. Main St., where dedicated volunteers paint old, unwanted donated furniture, as well as repair, recycle, upcycle and repurpose the items. Restore Décor is 100% volunteer-operated and walk-in volunteer paint-and-restore hours are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays; 10 a.m.-noon and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays; and, from noon-2 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, when volunteers take the reinvented furniture a few blocks to Restore Décor’s retail store at 111 N. Second St. Volunteers arrange the store on Friday nights, and at the end of the night the week’s newly designed pieces are photographed and posted to Restore Décor’s Facebook page. Items are for sale during the resale store’s hours from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., on Saturdays only, and when the workshop at 223 N. Main St. also is open to the public. All the money made from the Saturday sales are donated to a community member/family in need or nonprofit organization that needs help. “We pick a Saturday and say on social media, ‘Today’s proceeds are going to…,’ for example, Good Samaritan House, tell customers what we’re doing and, at the end of the day, we write the organization a big check,” Adams explained. Furniture donations can be dropped off on Saturdays at either Restore Décor location or at the workshop during volunteer painting times. Volunteers also will pick up unwanted items from donors’ locations on Monday evenings. Visit Restore Décor’s Facebook page, email restoredecoredwardsville@gmail.com or call Adams at 618-9802018 for more information.

So … on a recent weekend when the temperature barely got out of the single digits for two days — you know the one — I got out a 5-quart pot and started dumping in vegetables. I had about one-half pound of ground beef left over from the night before, so I browned that and tossed it in. I sliced five pieces of bacon into 2-inch strips and added them to the mixture. Two bags of frozen, mixed vegetables, multiple cans that included corn, carrots and tomatoes, along with one fresh tomato (or as fresh as it gets from a Midwest produce section in January), tomato sauce, one-half of an onion for seasoning and four medium-sized potatoes, cubed. My mom used to dice up a couple stalks of celery, saying that it was a critical ingredient, but I didn’t have any, and I wasn’t going to go to the store. But if you have some, throw it in. A little basil, salt and pepper, and I cranked it up to boil. Once it was bubbling, I turned it down to medium-low and let it simmer for about two hours. It was a great meal. I recently discovered an Italian bread in the bakery at Walmart that is topped with sesame seeds, and a couple of slices of it, on the side, and it was the sumptuous repast for a mid-winter weekend, when you just wanted to stay in and work on watching your list of Academy Award-nominated movies, instead of
On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 30, 2020 • 7 braving the cold. We crossed a couple of movies off of our list that day, too. “The Irishman,” on Netflix, was a definite time investment of 3.5 hours, but it was worth it. It was one of my husband’s favorites, so far. And “Marriage Story,” also on Netflix, is a good story that I found appealing, yet sad, too. The acting was great in both. So, reducing our movie list by two in one day, and concocting a big pot of soup that lasted us for two more meals, made me feel like we didn’t waste the day. And though the best thing about homemade vegetable soup is that you can make it with ingredients you have on hand, I’m including a basic recipe that you can tweak to accommodate what is in your own pantry or refrigerator. One night, you may want to have it as a true all-vegetable soup; another, you may want to add hamburger or stew meat, leftover roast or a few slices of bacon. In my opinion, boiled bacon in a soup is delicious. Or if you have some other transforming additions, let me know. Incidentally, that sesame seed Italian bread is good with butter, as we had it with the soup; it’s good for sandwiches and really good when toasted. It’s my new favorite all-around bread. Vegetable Soup 1 pound ground beef
1 onion, chopped 1 large can tomatoes (or fresh, if you have them) 1 large can tomato sauce (if you use fresh tomatoes, add another small can of sauce) 1 cup water 1 can carrots (or bag of frozen or fresh) 1 can corn 1 can green beans 3 to 4 large potatoes, cubed (this is very important, I think) 1 teaspoon sweet basil Salt and pepper, to taste Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain grease. Combine cooked meat, vegetables and seasonings. Bring to a boil, and simmer for at least one hour. Or let it simmer all afternoon, and it will fill the house with an appetizing aroma that makes everyone excited for dinnertime. The beauty of this soup is that any leftovers will taste even better the second night after marinating in the fridge. Or if you don’t want to eat it two nights in a row, store in individual containers in the
freezer, and it can be brought out for single lunches — or a snack. Grammys honor Nipsey Hussle with a soaring performance
By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — John Legend, Meek Mill, DJ Khaled and a host of musicians paid tribute to Nipsey Hussle at the Grammy Awards, filling the vast stage with a soaring performance of his music. The tribute kicked off with Mill performing a new song called “Letter to Nipsey,” which mentioned a letter President Barack Obama wrote in Hussle’s honor. “When we lost you, it really put some pain on me,” Mill rapped. “Real hitters never die.” Then DJ Khaled and Legend sang their collaboration with Hussle, DJ Khaled’s track “Higher,” which later won the Grammy for best rap/sung performance. Legend sang while playing the piano as a choir sang along with them. Other performers including Kirk Franklin, Roddy Ricch and YG, each took turns doing solos. Hussle was killed outside of his South Los Angeles clothing store in March 2019. Sunday’s performance featured musicians, background dancers and Legend wearing traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean clothing
in honor of Hussle’s African roots. The tributes to Hussle were made even more poignant by the loss earlier in the day by another icon of Los Angeles — basketball superstar Kobe Bryant. “Rest in peace, Nipsey Hussle,” DJ Khaled said at the end of the performance. Hussle’s image was beamed onto the back of the stage, beside one of Bryant. “Rest in peace, Kobe Bryant,” DJ Khaled said. Hussle received praise for being a skilled rapper and also for being an activist who tried to unite and build up his community. Ava DuVernay introduced the Grammy performance by saying Hussle “made brave, brilliant strides in his community.” Earlier, before the telecast, Hussle became a Grammy Award winner the first time. He won best rap performance for his track “Racks in the Middle,” a collaboration featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy. Lauren London, Hussle’s partner and the mother of his child, accepted the award with several members of Hussle’s family, including his grandmother. “Higher” then made him a double posthumous winner.

Without further ado, a look back at movies in 2019
By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge
This might seem a little late for this look back at the last year in cinema, my editor got this one lost in the shuffle, but such is life, so let’s get on with it, shall we? In addition to the below list of remarkable titles from 2019, there were a couple of performances that catapulted smaller films into mainstream consciousness. The skillful subtlety of Tom Hanks made his performance as Fred Rogers a standout in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Similarly, Awkwafina, in “The Farewell,” proved that she’s as talented in dramas as she is in comedy, and with her brand of music to boot. And, because my “1917” review in last week’s On The Edge of the Weekend, you know what high praise I gave that film. And its status only became higher in my eyes since it won winning the Golden Globe for Best Drama earlier this month. So, without further ado, here are my 2019
top five films: • “Us” — Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Get Out” is exciting, scary and chillingly relevant, in a way that you won’t shake after seeing this flick. • “Joker” — Gratuitous violence aside (but really, it ultimately defines the storyline’s climax), “Joker” and its star, Joaquin Phoenix, are a non-stop thrill ride that brings a different dark side to the D.C. Universe. • “Ford v. Ferrari” — A full-throttle biopic of two men important to the history of muscle cars. Matt Damon and Christian Bale support each other for a very impressive co-lead status. I hadn’t previously considered that a technical explanation of RPMs could be so emotive. • “They Shall Not Grow Old” — A World War I documentary about British trench soldiers told through technology by converting undated brittle film into colorized threedimensional digital files? A film school nerd might have dreamed it up, but my screening was sold out and Fathom Events and Warner Bros. Pictures reissued the program in
November because of demand. • “Knives Out” — This hit is a broad ensemble comedy (about a murder) that may have saved this genre from the bin, but it goes farther. Big stars have small parts and thrive in them. Chris Evans’ sweater gets its own meme. And, as I predicted (remember this column is being published later than planned), for his southern-fried lead role, Academy Award-nominated Daniel Craig is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. Other noteworthy 2019 occurrences in the movie industry, Walt Disney Studios completed its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, but the ultimate result of that deal won’t be felt creatively for another year or two. But, it didn’t stop Disney from selling nearly $10 billion in tickets, mostly because Marvel concluded the “Infinity Saga,” and neatly. It even kept the line rolling with a “Spider-Man” sequel. And, I must take this opportunity to commend my friends at AMC Creve Coeur 12 for the multiplex’s beautiful remodel last fall. It’s worth the one-hour drive from Edwards-
ville. Other moments I loved about going to the movies in 2019 included the unlikely, slow-building romance between characters played by Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron in “Long Shot,” the continuing saga of the “John Wick” franchise and the ease of seeing Paul Walter Hauser take on leading-man status in “Richard Jewell.” I even got to see “Stingray” on the big screen for its 40th anniversary at The Wildey Theatre, in my hometown, where “Stingray” was filmed. So, what does 2020 hold? “No Time to Die” brings 007 back. Warner Bros. Pictures will find out if lightning can strike twice with “Wonder Woman 1984.” I’ll see if Disney’s live-action “Mulan” will override my indifference caused by “The Lion King” and “Dumbo.” But really, in a bit of embarrassing honesty, I’m most looking forward to “Top Gun: Maverick.” I think it’s a terrible idea to make a sequel 34 years after the original, but I have faith in Tom Cruise and “a need for speed.” Its first two trailers look awesome. And, never fear, I’ll be there on opening day to see it for you.
The Wildey Theatre, in Edwardsville, where “Stingray” was originally shot in the late ’70s and shown last year on The Wildey’s big screen for the film’s 40th anniversary. (For The Edge)
