Legendary Mustang Sanctuary raising funds for new veterans project

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

WOOD RIVER — Big Papa G and The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary (LMS) partnered again this year to host a special night of fun — and romance — on Valentine’s Day for a music trivia experience for all, especially animal lovers and those who want to help veterans through this fundraiser for LMS’ veterans S.A.V.E. Project, a new program. Holiday Shore’s Greg Horta, a k a Big Papa G, makes his events interactive and will also make any wedding proposal special during LMS’ SweetHeart Music Trivia Blast Fundraiser. Big Papa G makes players want to sing, dance and laugh out loud, even if there’s no proposal involved. The music featured in Big Papa G’s events varies widely from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s to the present and from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles to Jennifer Lopez. What other trivia includes a lip sync and dance contest to win points for an overall score? Horta formed his company, Big Papa G (BPG) Entertainment LLC, nearly 10 years ago, providing not only music, but motivation for causes and community among guests to BPG events

— big or small. His love for music and fun led him to launch BPG Entertainment, a fully insured company that specializes in corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, Sweet 16 parties, educational events, promotional events and any other special occasion in the Metro East and St. Louis region. “A few people have said, ‘You should make the trivia harder,’ but I try to make it a level that all ages can enjoy and keep it fun,” Horta noted. His motivation is making people happy, which

includes supporting good causes. Big Papa G regularly and often donates BPG Entertainment’s time, rubbing shoulders and hanging out with beloved mascots FredBird, of the St. Louis Cardinals, and LOUIE, of the St. Louis Blues, for the organizations’ annual March of Dimes event, Veterans 5K and USO of Missouri. During the most recent USO event, about 4,000 troops from Missouri’s Fort Leonard Wood arrived at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on their way home for the holidays. USO of Missouri provided a celebration

for the troops that featured free food, entertainment, including Big Papa G, and giveaways from regional businesses. “Victory Block Leave (VBL),” otherwise known across the U.S. Army as holiday block leave, takes place every December as soldiers are allowed to take leave to be with their families.

“It’s my biggest donation. I love giving back, too,” recalled Horta, who has participated in the USO of Missouri event for the past four years. Big Papa G will put the same amount of dedication into The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary’s SweetHeart Music Trivia Blast, dedicating its funds to the development

Legendary Mustang Sanctuary launches veterans program

(For The Edge) By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com ALHAMBRA — The new year begins a new program of The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary (LMS) with its S.A.V.E. (Sanctuary and Veteran Equine) Project. The S.A.V.E. Project involves LMS’ rescued mustang horses helping to provide support and comfort to veterans diagnosed with PTSD and other identified injuries, explained LMS co-founder Kathy Lewis, of Alhambra, where the sanctuary farm and pastures are located. The S.A.V.E. Project will be working with The Healing Power of Equus, which uses the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method and veteran whole wellness programs. LMS’ SweetHeart Music Trivia Blast Fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 14, will dedicate funds raised at the event to the development and implementation of S.A.V.E. The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary rescues many wild mustangs and burros as possible and seeks permanent loving adoptive homes for these horses, while saving them for future generations. St. Louis Regional Airport Director Dave Miller, of East Alton, recently adopted a 3-year-old wild mustang that came to LMS straight from the range, now in the process of being “gentled” by Miller, that will be the first horse involved in the S.A.V.E. Project. Miller named his horse Gabriel, or Gabe for short, in honor of St. Gabriel, and boards Gabe at the Legendary Mustang Sanctuary. While full grown, Gabe is still young

and mustangs generally live to be in their 50s. A number of reasons led Miller to adopt from LMS. “We had worked with the sanctuary at the airport for a goodly number of years for one reason or another, for one with our Mustangs for Mustangs event,” Miller explained. “When I saw Kathy working at Jacoby Arts Center where my wife led the board at the time, I saw the LMS logo on the back of Kathy’s jacket and thought the Mustangs event would be an opportunity to show them off.” The Sunday after the weekend Mustangs for Mustangs event, which started out as simply a Saturday car show, the airport holds its annual Fly-In, when youngsters have an opportunity to take a flight with an experienced pilot. “Parents bring their kids, and while they’re waiting after registering, kids can hear the wild mustangs’ story, feed them carrots, pet them,” Miller said. “Legendary Mustang Sanctuary had an open house this Veterans’ Day and Brad Levite with the Veterans Assistance Commission for Madison County came out with one of his state-level superiors and they really liked what they saw. They saw the sanctuary as a place where veterans could relax, share their stories and find comfort.” Then Miller saw a television program about those suffering from PTSD working with animals to relieve symptoms. This made him think even more about adopting a mustang, especially because the LMS founders, which includes Lewis’ husband, Shawn, planned to expand LMS’ successful public education platforms to include new senior citizen and veteran participation options. “He’s a very good looking horse, so I said,’Let’s adopt him, start gentling him,’” Miller said. ”I have no idea how long it’ll take, but we’re to the point I’m holding his

food in a pan and now he’ll come up and nudge his muzzle into the pan I’m holding in between my hands.” LMS rescued Gabe from a Bureau of Land Management Holding Facility, with which LMS works with regularly. “I can empathize with the BLM’s problem, but at the same time these animals need to be rescued,” Miller said. “Shawn and Kathy Lewis are just incredible.” Miller and his wife, Cora Miller, have been committed to community service for years, and Cora is a LMS volunteer, as well as the nonprofit organization’s volunteer promotions and development director. “We were attracted to Gabe immediately, but he was drawn to Dave,” Cora Miller said. “Kathy says, ‘The horse will pick you,’ and he picked Dave.” The Millers received their official adoption approval papers. In one year, they will receive official papers from the U.S. government formalizing the adoption. “The wild mustang horses’ speed, endurance, strength and ability to adapt remain legendary,” Cora Miller said. “We need to rescue many of these beauties, saving America’s living history for the future. “Mustangs were also the choice of America’s pioneers in settling the West for the same reasons they were Pony Express horses — because they are very intelligent and train well,” she noted. “They are loyal family members. They are a part of our history and we should embrace and protect this great American treasure, for which I’m passionate.” The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary enjoys extended public interests within social media outlets, viewed with likes by thousands of Facebook members and other website pages. LMS’ presence and brand recognition is identified on YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest. The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary is not tax funded, nor does it receive

regular allocations from other organizations; relying solely on business and public donations in support of animal rescue missions. Its workforce is all volunteer with no staff salaries or hourly wages paid. LMS is 100% supported by donations, of which 100% are dedicated to The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary’s goals of rescuing as many wild mustangs and burros as possible and finding forever homes for those animals. The SweetHeart Music Trivia Blast, hosted by Big Papa G, a LMS fundraiser will dedicate this year’s trivia night funds to the development and implementation of its veterans’ S.A.V.E. (Sanctuary and Veteran Equine) Project, a new program. SweetHeart Music Trivia Blast starts at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14, at the Loyal Order of the Moose 1349, 730 Wesley Drive, Wood River. Doors open at 6 p.m. There will be a raffle, games and prizes, including a Blue Bugs drone,

handmade quilt, St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup bobblehead, Disney merchandise, generous themedbaskets and more. Tickets cost $20 per person or $160 for a table of 8. Project, a new LMS program for veterans, particularly those suffering from PTSD. (Photo credit Cora Miller/The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary|For The Edge)

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Homemade Taste Made Easy! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

Vicki Bennington

EDWARDSVILLE — I had heard of Papa Murphy’s quite a while ago, but had never given it a try. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I was thinking I didn’t want to have to cook at home, but “take ‘n’ bake pizza” is the idea behind the brand.

Turns out, I should have gone a long time ago. It was a Saturday evening, and we had eaten at La Casa Mexicana (more on that in a future column), which is right next door, and as we were walking to the car, I suggested we go in Papa Murphy’s and maybe take a pizza home for the next evening. Perusing Papa Murphy’s menu, most of the “already made” pizzas had multiple cheeses (which most people love), or maybe an herbcheese blend. With me being me, I wanted mozzarella only.

When I asked if there were any pizzas that only had mozzarella, the attendant said, “No, but we can make you anything you want.” Great! In no time at all, they had put together a “Papa’s Favorite,” which is sort of a supreme, combination pizza with a from-scratch, cracker-thin crust (just the way we like it), using only mozzarella cheese. Other toppings were traditional red sauce, premium pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, sliced mushrooms, mixed onions, green peppers and black olives. If you order the already made Papa’s Favorite, it would also have cheddar cheese. And there are several crust choices. A “Murphy’s Combination” is similar, if you take away the ground beef and green peppers, and add salami. The chicken garlic pizza has a blonde look, with a creamy garlic sauce, whole-milk mozzarella, grilled chicken (raised without antibiotics), Roma tomatoes, green onions, cheddar cheese, and an herb and cheese blend. There are also all-meat choices, barbeque chicken and gourmet selections, like, chicken bacon artichoke, which includes crisp bacon and artichoke hearts, fresh spinach and aged Parmesan. Or maybe you would like a gourmet vegetarian with garlic sauce, spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, Roma tomatoes, onions and cheddar.

(Vicki Bennington | For The Edge)

The stuffed pizzas take the word “stuffed” to a whole new level. It’s not just the surrounding crust that is full of cheese. The entire pizza is stuffed with toppings between two layers of original crust. We didn’t try this kind, but it looked very hardy. There’s even a crustless pizza if you’re avoiding carbs. There are several other choices, too, but as I said, the staff was very accommodating of making one that was just right. So if you don’t see it on the menu, make up your own. We grabbed a couple of fresh-made salads to start our meal for the next night, and headed home. Papa Murphy’s package instructions say if you have the unbaked pizza refrigerated, let it set out for 60 minutes before baking to allow the crust to rise. That’s what we did, and popped it into the oven in the tray it came in. It only took about 12 minutes, and it was ready. It wasn’t really like I had to cook at all. The flavor was delicious. It’s one of the best pizzas I’ve had in a long time. It did taste like a homemade pizza, only better. And it was so easy. Oh, and while we were waiting for the crust to rise, we ate our salads. I had the garden salad (I removed the cheese before eating), with a variety of fresh, hand-sliced veggies. My husband had the club, which also had nice, fresh vegetables and thin slices of ham. They were just right to get our appetites rolling and to make way for the pizza. You can also order cheese bread or mini pizza kits, or if you’re up for dessert — chocolate chip cookie dough or a cinnamon wheel. If you are like me, and thought that the restaurant was named after somebody’s dad or grandfather with the last name of Murphy, you would be wrong. The name is actually a merger of two companies in Vancouver, Washington, Papa Aldo’s Pizza and Murphy’s Pizza, with original roots going back to 1981 and 1984, respectively. It is the fifthlargest pizza chain in the United States, and has more than 1,300 locations in the U.S. and Canada. Papa Murphy’s is at 207 Harvard Drive in Edwardsville. Alton Pride sets itself apart planning youth resource center

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com ALTON — With a nudge from a friend the ball started rolling to organize the inaugural Alton Pride Fall Festival set for Saturday, Oct. 3, at Liberty Bank Amphitheater. “Nicci Kincer, on the board of Belleville-based Metro East Pride Southwestern Illinois, asked if I’d thought about doing this in Alton,” recalled Mike Paynic, owner of Bubby and Sissy’s, a longtime popular Alton bar at 602 Belle St., “and said, ‘You need to start thinking about doing that.’ “It’s not just about a festival, but also providing a place for teens to go and

be safe and be accepted in life,” Paynic said. “Not only human acceptability, but we also discussed suicide, which doesn’t even have to be a teen, because young adults come up to me at the bar and say, ‘I’m just done with life, I want to kill myself.’ “I tell them, ‘People love you, and don’t do that, don’t think that,’” he recounted. “A couple weeks later I’ll see them again, and they’ll tell me, ‘I’m really glad I talked to you. I feel a lot better. Thanks.’” “We are setting ourselves apart from other Pride organizations by focusing on giving back to our community, rather than hosting just a parade or festival.” Alton Pride will be depositing a majority of event proceeds into an account structured to fund the nonprofit organization’s goal of developing a local teen suicide

prevention line and creating a teen resource center to help youth in need. “By supporting Alton Pride in any capacity, you’ll be assisting others in the community by saving lives and bringing awareness to homelessness, mental health, teen suicide and other issues regarding the LGBTQplus community,” Paynic explained. Since the seed was planted last summer, Paynic has formed a board and a 501(c) (3) for Alton Pride Inc., for which fundraising already has started. In short order, the nonprofit raised $3,500 from donors, since it created the Alton Pride Facebook page. An open-to-the-public board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Johnson’s Corner, 2000 State St., in Alton. Along with Kincer, Coordinated Youth and Human Services, in Granite City, also

is involved in presenting the first Alton Pride Festival. Key board members include Paynic’s sister, Debbie Paynic, Treva Swain, Brandon Becton, Jason Heeren and his partner Levi Kamp, with Gershwin Mortgage, who also is involved in some Grafton businesses, secretary Anne McCoy and treasurer Bret Brimberry, who works at CNB Bank and Trust, on Homer Adams Parkway, who donated $100 to Alton Pride, which CNB gave to each of its employees as a Christmas gift directed to go to a charity of the employee’s choice. Prior to Alton Pride’s Tuesday board meeting, Brimberry will speak at “What’s Up Downtown,” Alton Main Street’s quarterly information exchange, at 5:30 p.m. at Jacoby Arts Center, 627 E. Broadway, in Alton. “We’re all doing this together, even though I’m on the 501(c)(3) and have the president title, I don’t put

How to get involved: What: Alton Pride Inc. board meeting & Alton Pride Fall Festival planning When: 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month Where: Johnson’s Corner, 2000 State St., Alton Info: Meetings held the first Tuesday of each month at Johnson’s Corner, open to the public, all are welcome. A few board and committee positions still are open. Upcoming fundraisers include Sunday, Feb. 9, at Bubby & Sissy’s, 602 Belle St., with food donated by Big Boy’s Q Catering, and “Fun Fling” from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Bubby and Sissy’s, with live music from Jerseyville’s Flip The Frog. myself above anyone, ever,” Mike Paynic said. “It’s a group effort. “It’s funny, we did a float in the Alton Halloween Parade and got $50 for third place. People thought we were Pride, the beautification organization, but we’re Alton Pride,” he noted. “We got the 501(c)(3) status a couple months ago as a nonprofit.” Alton Pride’s mission statement, as it appears on its website, www.altonpride.com, and Paynic repeated, is: “Alton Pride is a charitable and educational organization established to bring awareness, understanding and advocacy to the LGBTQ-plus community, with an emphasis on the specific needs of the youth within the community.” The Alton Pride Inc. Board of Directors recently sent out sponsorship letters for its the fall fest. “And now we’re finding out some larger corporations want to have budget information,” Paynic noted. “We’ve told them, ‘Well, we’ve never done this before,’ all of us that’s on the board. “We’re like babies who learned to crawl, and now we’re starting to walk and growing with it, too.”

Flip The Frog will open the inaugural Alton Pride Fall Festival, Saturday, Oct. 3, at Liberty Bank Amphitheater, in Alton. Flip’s new lineup, left to right, is Karen Fischer, Lenny Levi, Lyn Assar and T.J. Callahan. The Jerseyville rock outfit is a crowd-pleasing cover band known to get people up and dancing. (For The Edge)

There still are a few board positions open and committee members needed. “We still have few spots for people to lead and to serve under our committee persons,” he said. Alton Pride board meetings are at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at Johnson’s Corner. As the official president of Alton Pride, Paynic leads the meetings and the secretary takes and provides minutes. “All are welcome,” Paynic said. “Our secretary, Anne, helps me along. We try to get to all the topics and keep the meetings under two hours, but there’s a lot to discuss.” A small fundraiser at Bubby and Sissy’s is Sunday, Feb. 9. Big Boy’s Q Catering will donate food for the event. The board has a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Alton amphitheater, to discuss entertainment and finalize the headliner for October’s Alton Pride Fall Festival. “We’ve already had a lady email us and say she’s going to be protesting the day of the festival,” Paynic said. “I simply explained that we are about uniting the community, that’s where we stand. We’re helping youth. We are about love and acceptance.” Another fundraiser, Fun Fling, is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Bubby and Sissy’s, with a live band, Flip The Frog. St. Louis-based Gateway Men’s Chorus and CHARIS, The St. Louis Women’s Chorus, are confirmed for the festival date, as well as singers Summer Osborne and Jen Norman. Flip The Frog will open the festival on the outdoor stage. The festival also will include a “Pride Idol” contest, from which the winner will sing the national anthem. At least four female impersonators will perform a number here and there, and also emcee the event. Visit www.altonpride.com and follow Alton Pride on Facebook and Instagram for more information.
