Like a rainbow: Coming together with Colors of Cancer

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

MARYVILLE — Now is a time for rainbows. The American Cancer Society (ACS) Colors of Cancer campaign honors survivors of different cancers, with the opportunity to also highlight loved ones in memoriam, to raise research funds and awareness for cancers of various forms. This compassionate opportunity sheds light on lesser-known and/or lesserresearched cancers due to lack of funding. “With the transition of Relay For Life in finding alternate desired ways of raising funds and raising awareness for different cancers — many people can’t walk the relay — we want to offer alternative, honorable opportunities for everyone to participate,” said the ACS North Central Region’s Mandie Ernst, senior manager, community development, based in Maryville. The American Cancer Society Madison County Leadership Board of Directors launched Colors of Cancer last year. Among the reasons, one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. “We need your help to raise the necessary funds and awareness to fight back against this disease,” said Ernst, who leads the ACS nonprofit with Sheena Whitehead, senior community development manager, and Alissa Fuhrmann, community development manager. Glen Carbon couple Mark and Lisa Luer chose to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, so they are wearing the color gold throughout the month-long campaign that started June 1. They are wearing gold in honor of their son, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma a few years ago.

Last year they narrowly missed being the top fundraisers, raising more than $4,000. Busey Bank’s JJ Mueller, of Brighton, also an ACS board member, raised slightly more than the Luers for the top spot. Now through Tuesday, June 30, the Colors of Cancer campaign will take place with the top fundraising candidate revealed in July. Details of the reveal will be announced soon for that event, to be followed by a wrap-up event for everyone who participated. Anyone can join the Colors of Cancer campaign by contacting Fuhrmann at

618-288-2320 or email alissa.fuhrmann@ cancer.org; or enter the campaign by registering at www.main.acsevents.org/ cocmadisoncountyil. Colors of Cancer, sponsored by First Community Credit Union, asks you to choose a cancer type’s representative color for the entire month of June. Wear your chosen color throughout this month to bring attention and awareness to the cancer type for which you want to raise awareness and research funds. The minimum campaign goal — but every little bit counts — is $1,500.

• $25 will support one person suffering from this disease with free 24-hour telephone, email and online chats and information. • $35 could help support three years of follow-up for one participant enrolled in ACS’ cancer prevention study-3, a research study that will help the ACS better understand what causes cancer, so the ACS can ultimately help prevent cancer. • $50 could help provide five rides to and from treatment for a cancer patient.

• $100 could help provide one breast cancer patient with one-on-one peer support from a trained volunteer breast cancer survivor. • $150 could help connect a trained patient navigator to a cancer patient so they can understand their diagnosis and get the help they need. • $500 could help provide a cancer patient and their caregiver with five nights of free lodging at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge community when their best hope for effective treatment is away from home. With every dollar raised, participants and/or donors will be helping those who are currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis, those who may face a diagnosis in

the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether because of education and risk reduction. The American Cancer Society is available and accessible for those affected by every cancer in every community. Participates will help make a positive impact in their community and bring awareness to the type of cancer chosen to represent that which has affected their lives. Also, those supporters will be recognized at the website of Colors of Cancer, as well as the American Cancer Society’s social media channels, including with the chosen survivor candidate’s photo and biography. An exclusive prize will be awarded for the top fundraiser. Other upcoming ACS Madison County

The buzz about bees

Group spreads awareness, knowledge By Jeanie Stephens jeanie.stephens@hearst DORSEY — As awareness increased of the importance of bees to agriculture and bee populations declined over the past decade, beekeeper Charity DavisWoodard knew the importance of backyard beekeeping, of which popularity also has increased. Davis-Woodard, of the St. Clair County Beekeepers Association, also operates Honey Maids & Honeywood Hives, in Dorsey, along with fellow beekeeper Barbara Beal. While collecting and selling honey is a bonus, DavisWoodard said, it’s not the only reason to get involved with beekeeping, which requires work. She currently maintains about 45 honeybee hives in various locations, throughout the region and knows what it takes to get started as a beekeeper, as well as what a new beekeeper can expect. “The hobby — definitely nationwide and probably internationally — has grown since the whole Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) happened, and with, just, more publicity about pollinators, in general, being in trouble,” she noted. “A lot of people want to rally to the battle cry and help save bees, and they think that being a beekeeper is the best way to do that.” Not only are honeybees essential for pollination of agricultural crops that make up one-third of humans’ diets, including fruits and vegetables, but also honeybees produce honey and beeswax, commonly utilized in various consumer products, including food and personal care. A steep learning curve exists for the beginner, but beekeeping is an accessible and rewarding personal hobby within a wide range of locales, she noted. “Whether you have a backyard or a small farm, or anything in between, you can have a honey bee colony in your backyard,

if your community allows it,” Davis-Woodard said. “Honeybees will fly two to three miles in all directions. It’s really a remarkable area that they will cover, no matter where they live, to find nectar or pollen. “In fact, even some restaurants and huge hotels have them on their rooftops. In New York City, it’s a big thing. The bees will find the food.” For those who live in an area where hives are not allowed, there also is the possibility of finding a host property, with another beekeeper or others who might not want their own hive, but wouldn’t mind having hives maintained on their property. “Beekeepers are usually looking for good situations,” Davis-Woodard said. “I think the host usually feels pretty good about helping someone out.” With an initial cost of $350 for one hive, or about $600 for two hives, beekeeping can be rather pricey, especially for beginners who are learning what to do. Fortunately, the St. Clair beekeepers association periodically hosts an “Introduction to Beekeeping” class, at the Madison County Farm Bureau, 900 Hillsboro Ave., Edwardsville. The all-day class costs $50. “Introduction to Beekeeping” is an opportunity for potential beekeepers to learn about the basics of honeybee hive management and avoid many common mistakes before deciding whether to embark on beekeeping. “The main reason we hold this class is because honeybee keeping typically isn’t easy,” Davis-Woodard explained. “There’s quite an initial expense involved with it, so we want to try to educate people about that, and really get them started with a basic understanding of the animal that they’re dealing with, so that they can be successful.”

BEES

continued from Page 9 Since the loss rate of honeybee colonies during winter months is fairly high, beekeepers often have to plan ahead and prepare for loss. “We do recommend that people start with two hives because the national loss rate of honeybee colonies is about 30 percent,” DavisWoodard said. “You can divide a colony (in the spring) that does survive over the winter, but sometimes a person will even lose both the first year.”

While it’s not for everyone, DavisWoodard said that most people get excited and take it seriously when they realize it’s something they want to do. Once someone starts getting the feel for it, it also gets easier to make up for any losses. “Once you get going, you do learn,” she said. “I started with two hives and now I have forty-five, so you have to be careful that you don’t get completely ‘bit by the bug’ and have it take over your life. “Most people have anywhere from two to five (hives). Two or three is doable.” There also can be a great deal of fear when working with thousands

of stinging insects, but it’s a great activity for someone who’s particularly interested in animal behavior. “It’s kind of daunting to be working with stinging insects,” DavisWoodard acknowledged. “I think the hardest thing is learning to relax,” she said. “The interest in it has to overcome the fear. It’s this blending of art and science and making decisions that test your ability, which can be quite rewarding.” Because beekeeping requires periodic inspection of the bees and hives for signs that the bees are healthy,

see BEES, Page 13

Davis-Woodard, of Dorsey, opens up one of her 45 honeybee hives recently for inspection. Davis-Woodard sells honey and skincare products made from beeswax via Honey Maids & Honeywood Hives, a business, as well as a hobby, that she maintains along with fellow beekeeper Barbara Beal. continued from Page 11 beekeepers need to learn what to look for, and not be afraid to get inside the hives. Although photographs and individuals can educate new beekeepers, it’s not the same as personally inspecting the hives. “Early on, I remember looking at the ‘comb’ and wondering if it was honey or ‘capped brood’,” Davis-Woodard recalled. “It takes a while to tell the difference. To the beginner, you don’t always know that, especially when bees are crawling all over.” Although there are several aspects to beekeeping that are rewarding, one in particularly is the collection of excess honey for personal use or retail. But if that’s the only reason to get involved, it can be better to purchase honey from someone else and plant flowers to help honeybee and other pollinator populations. “Beekeeping is an important way to help, but almost, equally important, is people just planting flowers,” DavisWoodard said. “If you don’t have the space in your yard for flowers, or think they look too messy, potted flowers are OK, too.” Visit www.stclairbees.com, follow St. Clair County Beekeepers Association on Facebook, email cdavis.woodard@ gmail.com or call 618-971-5561 for more information.

Saving bees one hive at a time: The basics of backyard beehives

Scientists and environmentalists have been warning the public for years that honeybees are disappearing at alarming rates. Scientists were initially uncertain in regard to what was decimating bee populations. Even though no single cause is to blame, data has pointed to pesticide use and the mysterious colony collapse disorder, which is a name given to the dwindling colonies seen around the world. National Geographic News says bees are essential because of their roles as pollinators. Agriculture industries rely on honeybees, especially managed honeybees, to keep commercial crops pollinated and productive. Estimates indicate that roughly one-third of U.S. crops rely on honeybees — accounting for more than $15 billion in crop production. Without bees, the costs of everything from blueberries to apples to broccoli would rise, as farmers would have to use a different, more expensive pollination method. Even though backyard beehives or bee farms may not be

crucial to consumer agriculture, bringing healthy colonies back to various areas is beneficial to the environment overall. The art of beekeeping has become an important endeavor, and just about anyone with some time and resources can start their own apiary. • Start by studying bees. Interested beekeepers can begin their journey by reading all they can on beekeeping. The American Bee Journal or backyard beekeeping books and articles are great places to start. Local beekeeping associations also are invaluable resources for information on local bee species and traits. • Know the laws. It’s important to get the go-ahead from local authorities before introducing bees into the community. By checking city or town ordinances, potential beekeepers will know how many hives are allowed and which type of property sizes are amenable and allowable. • Get the right supplies. Research can help prospective beekeepers understand the type of equipment they will need.

One can purchase this equipment, but some beekeeping organizations may be willing to lend or rent it to interested parties. Hive boxes, bottom boards, a veil, a jacket, a smoker, and a top feeder are just some of the supplies needed. • Order bees. Bees can be acquired from other beekeeping enthusiasts or can be ordered online. The bees will need to consist of the queen, drones and worker bees. According to the resource Bees Brothers, a starter set of bees is called a “nuc.” Bee suppliers start selling in the winter for spring swarms. • Place the hive. It’s important to set up hives away from foot traffic. In addition, face hives away from strong winds, with the ideal directions being east and south. Hives need sunshine and some shade on summer afternoons, advises BackYardHive. With time, homeowners can become successful beekeepers and do their part to replenish much-needed bee colonies.

Review: ‘The Book of Rosy’ is one woman’s tale at the border

“The Book of Rosy: A Mother’s Story of Separation at the Border,” by Rosayra Pablo Cruz and Julie Schwietert Collazo (HarperOne) It’s easy to see why people in Guatemala and other Central American nations are willing to leave what little they have for a long, difficult and dangerous trek to try to slip into the United States. Guatemala’s economy and social systems barely function, gangs demand protection money from shopkeepers such as Rosy Pablo Cruz and the narcotics trade corrupts everything. Rosy herself was shot and her oldest son threatened by gangs. Her husband was murdered – why and by whom is never discovered. Rather than a dispassionate rendering of one mother ’s journey to the U.S. border, “The Book of Rosy: A Mother’s Story

of Separation at the Border,” by Rosayra Pablo Cruz and Julie Schwietert Collazo tips into advocacy against the Trump administration policy of separating parents from their children if they are caught entering the United States illegally. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, R o s y ’ s actions sometimes are less than admirable. On her first trip to the United States, she took only her younger son, fathered by a married man. She leaves her impoverished mother to break the news to her daughters and oldest son that their mom had taken off for America. Mother and son made it into the U.S. and Rosy found work in Chicago printing and bundling catalogs and other mailings. With overtime, she was able to send some money home. When criminals in Guatemala demanded money or they would

kidnap her older son, Rosy returned to her homeland. Then in 2018, she took both sons, but again left her daughters in the care of her mother. U.S. immigration rules had changed drastically since her first trip and all three were captured soon after crossing into the U.S. Rosy’s story offers ammo for both those who deplore the Trump administration’s border policies and those who support them. She describes mothers so anguished at having their children taken from them that they are hysterical. And their initial detention center emerges as every bit as grim as news accounts have described them. However, once the mothers (and fathers) are transferred to longer-term camps, life improves. Women and men are housed in separate buildings, are fed better, play games inside and can go outside for recreation.

Alto Plank Plus, 188 Mandorla

By JEFF ROWE Associated Press

Rosy’s sons, meantime, were staying with a caring family in New York that enrolled them in good schools. Rosy stays for almost three months at the detention center. Activist mothers in New York raised money for bail and she is flown to New York to reunite with her sons. In February, Rosy won the prize she hoped for when she crossed the border illegally with her two sons – she was granted asylum in the United States. She’s petitioning now to bring her daughters to join her. She’s immersed herself in American life – active in church and co-president of the ParentTeacher Organization at her oldest son’s school. Rosy benefited from dedicated and expert assistance on each step of her journey from detention to assimilation in the United States. Absent all that help, it’s hard

to imagine such a happy ending for other immigrants who, as did Rosy, arrive at the border with little more than a desperate hope and the clothes they are wearing.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Everyone eats quiche — even men! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge I think quiche got a bad rap with the book “Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche.” A book about the true meaning of masculinity, many “men” took the title to heart (maybe not even reading the content), boasting they were too “macho” to eat a dainty pastry dish. Or maybe they were just joking. Anyway, my man ate quiche — and liked it. I used a recipe of my mom’s that she used to make when her circle of good Vicki (female) friends came over Bennington for lunch. I can remember her talking about the recipe, but can’t quite recall where she discovered it. Maybe Bon Appétit magazine? That sounds right, but I’m not sure. She only made Quiche Lorraine, as far as I know. She would occasionally make it for the family. Maybe my dad and brother ate it. She never made other versions, with added extra vegetables or meats that a lot of people do, or

that you often find at restaurants. Not that I mind additional ingredients. Josephine’s Tea Room, in Godfrey, and My Just Desserts, in Alton, have often featured “exotic” quiches that were delicious. But I decided to give my mom’s Quiche Lorraine a try. It was relatively easy to assemble. I did use the Pillsbury refrigerated (not frozen) pie crusts. Frozen crusts are not good, as far as I’m concerned. The refrigerated are tasty. Of course, my mom always rolled out her own crust, and our family loved all of her pies. But … I took a little shortcut. When she would roll out her dough, there was always a little left over, and she would place it in strips on a cookie sheet and sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar as a fragrant treat. Just Uncooked quiche crust filled with egg, cheese, My mom’s Quiche Lorraine. (Vicki Bennington thinking of that smell reminds me of home! Half & Half or milk, and bacon mixture. (Vicki | For The Edge) In the recipe’s list of ingredients, I say, “Cheese of your choice.” That’s because I used Bennington | For The Edge) mozzarella. Since I’m not normally a cheese eater, I tend to use mozzarella as a substitute But I do eat quiche in restaurants and I did made with cheddar. Take your personal pick. for cheeses in recipes (or leave it out altoeat my mom’s, so … I tolerate cheese in cerAfter preparing, I popped it in the oven gether, though I didn’t think I should do that tain circumstances. Her original recipe actuand waited. I got a little scared when at the with quiche). ally called for Swiss cheese. Some quiches are 30-minute mark, it was still very “liquid-y.”

But I waited. At 40 minutes, the crust was getting dark and it was still wobbly in the middle, but quiche tips that I read online said wobbly or jiggly middles are “OK” (Haha! Does that apply to everything?). I took it out of the oven, and we ate it soon thereafter, with a side salad. I threw the salad together with things I had on hand — shredded lettuce — which worked out nicely. I bought it originally to use on sandwiches, but discovered that it’s great as a salad base. I added an onion slice, some tomatoes, and a few sunflower seeds for crunch, and tossed it with Caesar dressing. As usual, I added coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper on top. The quiche was good that first evening, though not as firm as I thought maybe it should be (even when you accepted a little bit of jiggle). But when it graduated to “great” status was the next day. I guess after letting it sit overnight, then rewarming, the consistency was perfect and the flavors were more intermingled. Next time, I think I will prepare it the day before and plan on letting it sit and marinate, and then be reheated the following day. Some say that you should “blind bake” your crust before filling it, when making quiche (because the filling is so wet). I did not do that, and actually the crust seemed just fine. But if you want to make sure it doesn’t get soggy, recommendations say to bake the crust ahead of time, which is distinctly different as it

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, June 4, 2020 • 21 applies to whether using refrigerated pie shells or made-from-scratch. The latter has more dough and more fat. If you are concerned about your quiche crust being soggy, make sure to check into how to blind bake your crust, especially if it is homemade. All that said, now that I have made this recipe myself, I can see many more quiches in our future. I love my mom’s Quiche Lorraine combination, but I can see adding mushrooms, spinach, asparagus or other vegetables, or using diced ham sometimes, instead of bacon. Maybe a little onion? One of the great things about quiche is, that it’s good — and appropriate — for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. I became a little curious about the whole concept, and found all kinds of interesting tidbits about quiche and its origins. Here are a few I gathered from various sources — just for fun: Quiche is considered a French dish, though custards in pastry were known in English cuisine at least as early as the 14th century, and in Italian cuisine, as early as the 13th century. Quiche Lorraine is a popular quiche variant that was originally an open pie with a filling of custard with bacon. There are many formal variants of quiche incorporating many of the additions I suggested earlier that are named descriptively in French. For example, quiche with cheese would be called quiche au fromage (I love the way that one sounds) and quiche with mush-

rooms is called quiche aux champignons (that’s another good one). I just found out that May 20 was National Quiche Lorraine Day! Who knew? I barely missed it, but will mark my calendar for next year! Meanwhile, bon appétit! That phrase is fun, too. Quiche Lorraine 9-inch pie shell (Buy in dairy section or make and roll your own) 1 pound bacon, crumbled One medium package of shredded cheese of your choice 6 eggs 2 cups Half & Half or milk 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Dash or red pepper Salt and pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare pie shell. Fry bacon, then crumble in unbaked shell. Sprinkle partial package of cheese on top of bacon. In blender, mix eggs, salt and pepper, nutmeg and red pepper. Pour in Half & Half or milk and blend well. Pour into shell, and top with additional cheese, if desired. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until solid (center can still be a little jiggly). The Re-Watchables: ‘Fan Favorite,’ ‘Guilty Pleasure,’ ‘Sleeper Hit,’ ‘Great Film’

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

Netflix bailed me out this week by releasing Paramount’s “The Lovebirds,” even though it’s a lackluster rom-com starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani about a struggling couple mixed up in a murder. But over these last two weeks I’ve spent a lot of time reacquainting myself with some old friends. I think a lot about “the movies” now that I can’t go to an actual cinema, but the topic that’s more on my mind lately is that I really enjoy a good re-watch. There’s three types of movies that one hypothetically re-watches and I’m going to tell you a little about my favorites in each category. This is all self-designed, comes with the usual caveat that my tastes don’t have to match yours, and I’d love to hear what you have to say about it if we run into each other at the supermarket. The first re-watch is the “Fan Favorite.” A Fan Favorite is usually a high-profile, big-budget, tent-pole release that gets a lot of attention, just for showing up. Many people’s

Fan Favorites are franchise flicks and I’m no exception. “Harry Potter,” parts 4 through 7b, and most of the Marvel films, with Chris Evans and/or Scarlett Johansson, rank high on my list. I love “Legally Blonde” because of who I watched it with the first two times (and, subsequently, the stage musical). Often, the Fan Favorite can be an adaptation of a great book, like, the 2015 movie “The Martian” from Andy Weir. While the most re-watchable Fan Favorites are spectacular, not all that glitters is gold. Others benefit from a great audience watching, like, “School of Rock,” in which Jack Black slays in front of a big room. A recent rewatch that made me enjoy a movie a lot more than my original screening was “Arrival,” with Amy Adams, from 2016. It’s too deep for just one trip through. “Frozen” is not rewatchable. It’s a babysitter for children of a certain age. Next we have the “Guilty Pleasure.” Sure, “Legally Blonde” is a guilty pleasure for almost everyone. For me, many of my favorite Guilty Pleasure re-watches star Mark

Wahlberg. “The Italian Job,” “Shooter” and the great “Daddy’s Home,” with Will Ferrell, never get old — at least not yet. They rerun often on cable and nothing prevents me from staying through to the end credits. Do you know what they call a Guilty Pleasure that makes it to Fan Favorite status? A sleeper hit. The loosest definition of that would be a movie that makes between $80$120 million in ticket sales despite modest expectations, and then enjoys a healthy following after the theatrical window. “Napoleon Dynamite” was a sleeper hit that my whole family adores. “The Goonies” is a great re-watch for kids. Last is the “Great Film” re-watch. This is the best category, because a great film is a precious thing. Guilty Pleasures and Fan Favorites can absolutely crossover into this category, but that’s the beauty of my system: No Movie Left Behind! Some of my favorite Great Film re-watches are 1963’s “The Great Escape,” with Steve McQueen, based on Paul Brickhill’s book of the same name. And 1975’s “Jaws,” also based on a book of the same name by Peter Benchley, when I always try to recite Quint’s

(Robert Shaw) speech about the USS Indianapolis, along with Shaw’s drunken brogue. Westerns are stalwart re-watches and never more so than when the Duke (John Wayne) played Ethan Edwards in “The Searchers.” There’s a reason some of these movies are used in educational curriculums (only by this reason do I know to applaud an Ennio Morricone score, Conrad Hall’s cinematography and the brilliant editing of Thelma Schoonmaker). They’ve attained classic status because they’re justifiably great and have much to offer in a re-watch beyond sheer enjoyment…but sheer enjoyment is always enough. I must specify that nothing is as sad as a Great Film that loses its re-watchability. While I distress over the current consensus sentiment of “Forrest Gump” and “American Beauty,” commentary on that deviates beyond my thesis that I present here. For now, those two films remain two key points in my development of this thing I call my “Serious Movie Addiction.” And I’m grateful that no one or no virus can stop me from loving them. Until next time, know that we’ll get through this.

‘Never Have I Ever’ brings rare voice, and a newcomer, to TV

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Mindy Kaling was growing up in the Boston area, few classmates looked like her, and her television choices ranged from angsty white teenagers to funny white teenagers. It helps explain her latest project, the hit Netflix comedy “Never Have I Ever,” which follows Devi Vishwakumar, a first-generation Indian American teen navigating not only her culture and Hindu faith, but also raging hormones, commitment to excellence and explosive temper. “Some old loser was telling me that I was too Indian,” Devi says in the show’s fourth episode. “And some other people think I’m not Indian enough, and honestly all I want to do is eat a donut.” It’s a rarity on Western television. Though “Never Have I Ever” has received mixed reviews, it has drawn wide praise for its representation of South Asians. Netflix says it’s the No. 1 most-viewed show in several countries. “It’s about time we had a show like this,”

author Jeetendr Sehdev wrote for Forbes. “For years, South Asians have been raised with next to no positive representation on U.S. television — we’ve mainly been represented as terrorists.” Devi is played by 18-year-old Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who got the role after being plucked from an open casting call that drew 15,000 hopefuls. Her last acting experience before landing the role was a high school play. “It’s amazing how sometimes certain things just fall into your life,” Ramakrishnan said in a recent interview. Ramakrishnan laughed about having to tell her parents that she sent videos of herself to people she didn’t know in Los Angeles for the casting call. “My mom and my dad, they knew that I originally sent in the tape but I never kept them updated on it until I had to go to L.A., so that was a fun conversation to tell them that I sent in my videos to somebody in L.A. who I don’t know — just videos of myself,”

she said. “It sounds a little weird. But I was explaining to my mom and my dad, ‘This is legit. This is real.’ They were like, ‘OK, let’s get this into gear. Let’s figure out how to do this right, do it properly.’” Even though Ramakrishnan is playing a character created by Kaling and loosely based on the actor-writer ’s childhood — not to mention that Kaling is her boss and a personal hero — the teen said she hasn’t felt too much pressure. “Even on set, I never really felt nervous about it,” Ramakrishnan said. “First of all, (Mindy) never put any crazy weird pressure on me. She made it very easy and welcoming to just let me experiment and try it out. She’s very understanding.” In fact, Ramakrishnan said she bonded with Kaling over the part. “We would have conversations about certain scenes and finding our truth within Devi together.” Although the possibility of a second season remains unresolved, Ramakrishnan said she has been grateful for the experience and the

opportunity to learn. “I remember on the first day of filming I had to keep asking my co-star, Ramona Young, ‘What’s this rehearsal? What’s a first team? Are we a first team? What does this mean? What is that?’” she said. “And by the end of the first week I felt really confident but throughout the whole process I was always trying to constantly learn every single thing whether it was from the hair and makeup department, the camera crew, anybody that was willing to teach me anything, I just wanted to know.” Yo u n g a n d a n o t h e r c o - s t a r, L e e Rodriguez, said they’ve been impressed by Ramakrishnan, considering she had the least amount of on-set experience of all of them. “Her first time being in Hollywood, her first time being a lead,” Rodriguez said. “She’s doing a great job, honestly. She’s like our fearless leader right now.” Young added: “First day she asked me what a marking rehearsal is. Now look at her.”

Review: Pop star Gaga is back, but where’s the art or spark?

By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer

Lady Gaga, “Chromatica” (Interscope) In the 12 years since Lady Gaga dropped her first album, the singer has exceptionally shown that she knows how to create a killer album. “The Fame” was danceable and clever. “The Fame Monster” was an epic adventure into her darker mind. “Born This Way” brilliantly wove in elements of rock and house with her signature pop. Though she might have tripped over her disco ball on “ARTPOP,” the album still had direction and character. And “Joanne” was a deep, emotional set of songs that paved the way for the sound of “A Star is Born,” a flawless album that captures all the great sides of Gaga. Enter “Chromatica,” her sixth studio effort, and her return to the electro dance-pop sound that made her a multiplatinum pop star. It’s an album made for the clubs, though during this current pandemic, that’s equivalent to dancing alone in front of your floor mirror. But instead of bopping along to the album, you’ll want to social distance from it. “Chromatica” is a letdown from one of pop’s best voices. The production, which is basic, is the album’s biggest problem — and the flat

sound doesn’t help bring the heavy themes of the album to life like Gaga has been able to do in the past. BloodPop works as lead producer, co-crafting most songs on the project. But other helpers are also part of the process, including Max Martin, Skrillex, Ryan Tedder, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, Justin Tranter, BURNS, Rami Yacoub and Tchami. Too many cooks in the kitchen could be the reason the album lacks real flavor. Where is the salt, or spark? “Alice,” one of the better songs on the 16-track set, opens the album as Gaga sings, “My name isn’t Alice/But I’ll keep looking, I’ll keep looking for Wonderland.” Her search isn’t over if “Chromatica” is any indication — this feels like a watered-down version of the creative Gaga we all love. In an interview to promote the album, she explained that “Free Woman” was about her sexual assault and “Rain on Me” was partly about her overdrinking. The topics are real and at times, extremely heavy, and Gaga gets points for sharing her real-life feelings and experiences in her music. But the album’s production doesn’t serve as the best vessel for those deep emotions to breathe. And her vocal performance, surprisingly plain and unmemorable, doesn’t help either. Sometimes

it feels like Gaga isn’t even present. Some of the lyrics feel lazy, too. On “Plastic Doll” she sings, “I’ve lived in a pink box so long/I am top shelf, they built me strong.” Enter side-eye emoji here. Gaga fares better on tracks like “Replay,” or even “911” and “Babylon,” though both songs sound like leftover tracks from “Born This Way.”

But most of “Chromatica” is problematic: First single “Stupid Love” is forgettable; “Enigma” is predictable; and the inclusion of the chart-topping Ariana Grande on the bouncy but super-mediocre “Rain on Me” screams, “I JUST WANT A NO. 1 HIT RIGHT NOW.” Having little depth, the best way to describe “Chromatica” might be shallow.

A superhero kid with autism shines in new PBS Kids’ series

By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s a new crop of superheroes coming to our TV this summer but they may need a little seasoning. After all, they’re only in elementary school. The PBS Kids’ animated series “ Hero Elementary “ is set inside a grade school where a diverse group of four superhero students are learning to master their special powers. There’s a kid who can fly but is afraid of heights. There’s a girl with the power to teleport and a boy who creates forcefields of bubbles. Plus there’s a boy with an array of cool gadgets who is on the autism spectrum. The creators have been subtle about how they’ve portrayed the character of AJ Gadgets, who is on the highfunctioning end of the spectrum. AJ doesn’t like loud noises or wet clothes or to be apart from his beloved backpack. But he’s part of the team and always comes to the rescue. “We feel like there is so much strength in the idea of portraying a kid on the spectrum as just one of the kids and not making a huge deal about his autism,” said Christine Ferraro, who co-created the series with Carol-Lynn Parente. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that one in 54 kids were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder by age 8 in 2016, a nearly 10% increase over 2014 when the estimate was 1 in 59. The series leans into scientific principles as the characters confront various missions, like dealing with a huge ball rolling through the city, or taking care of a just-hatched baby swan. A helpful teacher encourages them to keep finding solutions even if they don’t succeed at first, teaching such skills as observing, investigating, testing and predicting. “You don’t come into this world knowing how to do everything. And so these kids struggle to learn in school, just like our kids struggle to learn how to do things,” said Ferraro. Linda Simensky, head of content at PBS Kids, said she was drawn to AJ’s inclusion and the show’s message of kids solving their own problems. “A lot of people pitch shows where there’s an expert and kids just go to the expert and ask how to do things,” she said. “And we have done everything we can to stay away from those kinds of shows. The adults in our shows always say, ‘Well, you know, that’s a good question. How do you think we should get to that answer?’ And they tease it out of the kids, which is how it often is in real life.” Ferraro and Parente are longtime veterans of “Sesame Street,” which in 2015 introduced Julia, a 4-year-old girl Muppet with autism. They didn’t initially intend to have a child with autism on “Hero Elementary,” but as they fleshed out AJ’s character it started to make sense. “It just kind of came about in an organic way like that,” said Ferraro. “For the most part, it’s not the focus of attention at all. He’s just one of the gang. And that’s something that we don’t see a lot on television. And that’s why we thought it was really important.” AJ’s teammates are aware of his needs and preferences — in one episode they desperately search for his lost backpack — and the show’s creators hope the show can teach empathy

and normalize the idea that all kids are different. “I think it models how you can, with a few adjustments, adjust to a friend with different needs, whether it’s autism or anything else,” said Parente. The series is designed for children ages 4-7, and premieres Monday on PBS stations, the PBS Kids 24/7 channel and PBS Kids digital platforms. Each episode runs about 11 minutes, with vibrant colors and a zany touch. “Even though babies may not look egg-zactly like their parents, it is egg-cellent when families are together,” quips the heroes’ teacher, Mr. Sparks. “OK, enough egg jokes.” Viewers familiar with autism and the signs of autism

might pick up on AJ’s behavior, but the creators are fine if other viewers don’t notice. They’ve purposely not directly addressed autism except for a double episode slated to run later in the series. Most of the time they just want him to be part of the group. “There is a place for kids with autism,” Simensky said. “They’ll be a little different. They’ll have different needs. But there is a place for them and they will bring something to it as well. “ ___ Mark Kennedy is at http://twitter.com/KennedyTwits
