Spilled Blood St. Louis surrealist delivers at Good Weather Gallery By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Artist Tom Blood brings a new perspective to common interpretations of the human condition in his upcoming solo exhibit at Good Weather Gallery. “This will be a large body of work, with varying prices and sizes,” said Good Weather Gallery’s Brooke Peipert, curator and owner. “Many of them have never been seen before. We are excited to invite the public to the gallery to view the exhibit ‘The Idea Painter.’”

Blood’s artist statement explains. “Some artists paint portraits. Others do still-lifes. Some create abstract art. I paint ideas. My goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With my paintings, you can always tell what’s going on, you just don’t necessarily know why. I want my paintings to tell stories that make you think. And if I can bring a smile to your face, that’s even better. You will notice traces of Magritte in my work — and for good reason — the Belgian surrealist master is my painting hero. There

will never be another Magritte. My ongoing quest is to continue to get better as an artist in both thought and execution, becoming a modern day surrealist with a style that is uniquely my own.” Recently Blood’s painting “Covid Beach” has been selected as one of 40 works from 32 local St.

Holiday gifts to spark home improvement ideas

For Home & Lifestyle People have spent more time at home in 2020 than they likely have in years past. This has provided homeowners with plenty of time to ponder potential upgrades to their homes. After taking inventory of their lifestyles, surroundings and furnishings, people have embarked on construction projects or home interior design renovations in record numbers. Holiday gifts that cater to projects around the house are likely to be highly valued this holiday season. Here are some ideas for

home improvement-related gifts. • Home improvement retailer gift card: Home improvement centers are one-stop shopping for do-it-yourselfers. To help offset the cost of supplies, gift-givers can give a gift card to a neighborhood hardware store. • Magazine subscription: There are plenty of ideas on the internet, but a subscription to a home remodeling or interior design magazine puts inspiration right in homeowners’ hands. Pages can be marked or cut out and used on idea boards. • Tools and supplies: Homeowners just starting out may benefit from the basics.

Stores often sell starter tool kits that can be used in home improvement-themed baskets. Experienced DIYers may have a special tool in mind that is outside their budget right now, like a chop saw or cordless power drill. Purchasing one of these items can help projects move along more smoothly. • Expert consultation: Who can’t use a little help with their home remodeling efforts? Give the gift of a consultation from an interior designer or professional contractor to help complete plans that may be a little out of reach for the average DIYer. • Big-ticket item: Some friends and family members may want to pool their

resources and offer loved ones an overthe-top gift. This can include a backyard playset for children, a storage shed, a pool installation, or even a new appliance package. Gift ideas are endless and only limited by budget. • Room re-do: All it may take is some new linens or accents to transform a room. From throw pillows to curtains to wall art, give the gift of an easy room makeover. Riding the momentum of increased home improvement projects from the past several months, holiday shoppers can choose home-related gift ideas to keep the projects and ideas flowing.

groupings to emulate an evergreen forest.

The holidays often involve purchasing gifts for close friends and loved ones as well as making a delicious meal the entire family will love. But nothing sets the holiday scene and overall mood more so than beautiful decorations and other seasonal accoutrements. Many people leave no room untouched for the holidays, meaning color schemes or trinkets may carry through from top to bottom. Decking the halls this season can be made even easier with some of these handy ideas. Holiday timeline If you keep holiday photo cards each year, put them in chronological order and hang them from a piece of garland from the mantel or drape on a staircase banister. This can be a fun way to see how your own children or other members of the family have grown. Make mini evergreen displays Clip your favorite pieces of evergreen and push the stems into floral foam. Display in small vases or other containers and place in

Plan the outside Exterior illumination and other exterior decorations share the holiday spirit with others. It can be overwhelming trying to visualize it all without a plan in place. Take a photo of the house and map out where you want lights and decorations to go. Then with your “map” in hand, you can more readily purchase supplies and start decorating. Go for a specific natural color scheme If you desire an overall holiday feel but aren’t interested in Santa figurines or kitschy elements, decorating with color in mind can be key. It’s easy to tie things together with some natural elements in your desired palette. For example, white, gold and green may look beautiful. Put boxwood clippings and white amaryllis flowers together. Pine cones, twigs and holly pieces also can add touches to mantels, doorways and table centerpieces. Ornaments elsewhere Who says ornaments only have to go on a tree? Display antique or favorite

Introducing one of the

ornaments by hanging them from beautiful ribbons throughout the home. Scent the scene Hang something aromatic on the tree to mingle with the pine. Fresh cinnamon sticks tied with twine or ribbon can be nestled among the boughs. Another scented idea is to make pine cone candles

and use pine or cinnamon scents to make them smell just like the season. Holiday decorating gets a hand from some creative ideas. Always follow safety precautions, especially when using candles, hanging lights and plugging in multiple items to electric sockets. With ingenuity and safety in mind, holiday decorations can be extra special.

How to host virtual holiday celebrations

Tune into virtual worship While some places of worship have reopened to some capacity, others may still be offering hybrid services. If your place of worship offers services via YouTube or another video platform, gather around and watch together and participate just as if you were there in person. Better yet, share the link with other family and friends so they can tune in as well. Share dinner ‘together’ Set up your camera source so it captures the holiday table. All parties gathering virtually can then sit down to the holiday meal as one and enjoy one of the season’s more endearing traditions. Virtual celebrations may continue through the holiday season. Adapting with some video conferencing tips can ensure everyone enjoys the festivities.

For Home & Lifestyle The 2020 holiday s e a s o n f i g u re s t o b e v a s t l y d i ff e re n t t h a n seasons past. The novel coronavirus COVID19 has transformed daily life in many ways. The public has become accustomed to wearing masks while shopping, limiting the number of people in public venues and keeping their distance from friends and loved ones. Many events have been reimagined as virtual celebrations because of social distancing protocols. For those with large families or people with inherent risk factors that make them more susceptible to illness, sharing the holidays over

video conferencing apps may be the safest way to go in 2020. The following tips can help holiday hosts make the most of a virtual holiday experience. Pick a bright, festive spot Set up your tablet, smartphone or computer in a bright area with a festive backdrop. You’ll want others who join the virtual hangout to be able to see you clearly. A Christmas tree or a decorated fireplace in the background can set the scene. Choose the right conferencing app Certain programs may work better than others depending on your needs. For example, if everyone

has the same operating system platform (iOS or Android), you may be able to use an app inherent to that system, which won’t require a separate download or login. Apps also may be chosen depending on how many people can be invited in, as some set limits. Do your homework and conduct a test run prior to the holidays. Keep props nearby If the goal is to open gifts virtually, be sure to have everyone gathered and gifts nearby so no one is scrambling in and out of view. Position the camera at eye level

Try to set up the camera so you’re not looking up or down. Practice looking straight into the camera instead of at yourself in the minimized window or even others on the screen. This way you’ll appear engaged. Use mute when not speaking Muting yourself (and encouraging others to do the same) when you are not speaking will limit the amount of background noise. As the host, serve as the moderator and encourage everyone to speak one at a time. Choose a visual cue to signal when someone has the floor to speak, such as raising a hand or even showing a festive picture.

might refer to as “the new normal.” Of course, with mandates changing so often, as of this writing, there may be indoor seating, too, or maybe it will be curbside only, but when we were there, we were seated under a canopy to provide some shade and add a little ambience right next to Dewey’s building. To start, I ordered a D’Arrigo pinot grigio, an Italian wine that had a faint taste of

peaches — very nice for a Sunday afternoon. My husband decided on an Old Bakery Dew Brew, a golden ale, produced by Old Bakery Beer Co. in Alton. I’m told Dewey’s rotates area craft beers to provide another outlet for sampling some of nearby offerings. I ordered a house salad, which is usually something I can hardly resist when eating out. I know, I know … at home, I could basically assemble anything and everything I want for a salad, but there’s just something about eating a salad at a restaurant that makes it seem better. Dewey’s house selection was a generous portion of field greens, toasted pine nuts, dried cranberries, topped with balsamic

House salad.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, November 19, 2020 • 21 vinaigrette (hold the goat cheese). The combination made for a tasty appetizer with my wine, and my husband sipped on his brew while we waited on our “Don Corleone” pizza. There are all kinds of choices with famous or infamous names, or maybe we should just call them quirky, like “Dr. Dre,” “Edgar Allan Poe,” “Green Lantern” and the “Bronx Bomber.” This may sound funny, but we chose the “Don Corleone” because we were in the midst of binge watching the HBO crime (mafia) series, “The Sopranos,” believe it or not, for the first time. I think when it originally aired, we were busy with small children and life, in general, and didn’t watch TV nearly as much as we do now. Anyway, we enjoyed it immensely (we’ve since completed it), and anyone who hasn’t watched it should probably at least give it a chance (if you’re into that

kind of thing). Word on the street is that a prequel movie is due out in March, “The Many Saints of Newark,” with the series’ star James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, playing the main character, Tony, at an earlier age. So … we thought the “Don Corleone” stayed with the mafia theme, and it was a great choice, no matter what it was called, with red sauce, prosciutto and caramelized red onions. Very much a “meat lover” type of pie. We got the large, and were easily able to take some home for the next day. I love doing that and getting an extra meal for the buck. In addition to the individually named pizzas, you can create your own from a long list of regular and gourmet toppings — and have the choice of red or white sauce. Or try a freshly made calzone with mozzarella and ricotta cheese and up to three toppings of your choice.

There are also several salad choices in addition to the house, like, Caesar, a candied walnut and grape that sounds really good, and the “Harvest,” with pumpkin seeds, figs and bacon (yum!). We never made it to dessert, but rumor has it that they bring in freshly made selections from around town every day. Dewey’s first location was opened in Oakley, Ohio, in 1998, by Andrew DeWitt, son of St. Louis Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt. The first stores were brought to the greater St. Louis area in 2004. Dewey’s now has 25 locations. For a complete menu, visit www.deweyspizza.com. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal. net with comments, ideas or suggestions.

‘Let Him Go’: First 4 out of 4 for 2020

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — I guess I had Diane Lane on my mind last week. And I guess that anyone who has seen “Unfaithful” or “Under the Tuscan Sun” has Diane Lane on their mind from time to time. Netflix had gifted me her feature debut, 1979’s “A Little Romance,” on DVD last week. She played an American schoolgirl finding first love with a Parisian cinephile during a whirlwind adventure to Venice. It was also one of Laurence Olivier’s final movies and I loved it. The there was the debut of her latest film, “Let Him Go,” a dark and remarkable thriller from writerdirector Thomas Bezucha. Lane is absolutely the star of “Let Him Go,” but she shares top billing with this guy named Kevin Costner. They excel in this movie as Margaret

and George Blackledge, respectively. They play grieving parents who lose their son in a farming accident that leaves their daughter-in-law, Lorna Blackledge (Kayli Carter) widowed and infant son fatherless. Soon after, Lorna remarries, to Donnie Weboy (Will Brittain), and things start to slowly unravel. At first, Margaret is happy to keep her grandson Jimmy close by, though in an apartment in town and not at the family ranch. She can still make curtains, bake cakes and see him often. But without warning, in the middle of the night, his step-dad Donnie up and moves his new family from their western Montana home to his family’s place in North Dakota. Margaret suspects this has something to do with her witnessing Donnie physically abuse both her grandson and his mother, which doesn’t bode well with this formerly calm grandma. She gives her husband, a retired sheriff’s deputy, an ultimatum:

Go with me to get back our boy’s boy or I’ll go it alone. She already has the car packed when she lays down the law. There’s a beautiful interlude of Western U.S. vistas as the grandparents road trip across Montana. The movie is set in 1963, but it’s got a timeless flavor. With periodic pit stops to inquire about where they’re going, the Blackledges find no one with information about the Weboy clan. Rumor has it that these are bad folks that like to be left alone. Even their cousins don’t offer up much to Margaret when she claims to be “practically related, after a fashion.” The first Weboy they encounter is Bill (Jeffery Donovan), Donnie’s uncle. Uncle Bill sneers and growls every syllable he speaks and then breaks into a big dopey grin to try to undercut the danger that exists in his tone. There is obviously a disturbed brain under his heavily shellacked hairline, but that doesn’t even come close to the worst Weboy, his sister-in-law Blanche (Les-

ley Manville). If Lane is the star of this show, then Manville is the hidden gem. Blanche is a no-nonsense, chain-smoking rhymes-with-witch. She may offer pork chops for dinner, but I wouldn’t trust them. Her boys are dear to her and little Jimmy is now her property. George doesn’t like it and Margaret won’t have it. Outnumbered and outgunned, they try to cut their losses, temporarily. This tense family drama takes a couple of ugly turns thereafter, involving a gothic-looking ranch house, a rusty hatchet and a few scenes that remind me of 2017’s “Wind River” and Lee Child’s book “Echo Burning.” You can’t look away for a second ( not that you’d want to). When Costner, often an MVP, plays your thirdbest character, this is truly a winning lineup. “Let Him Go” runs 113 minutes and is rated R for violence. I give this movie four stars out of four.

Edwardsville law firm Christmas Wonderland plans turkey giveaway Alton By Dylan Suttles Hearst Newspapers

Staff members at Edwardsville-based TorHoerman Law (THL) plan to hand out more than 600 turkeys in the firm’s seventh annual Thanksgiving giveaway on Nov. 21. This year’s giveaway has been altered to be a contactless drive-through experience to negate the spread of COVID-19. All THL employees will be practicing social distancing, as well as wearing masks and gloves. All participants also are asked to wear a mask. Alton Police will help direct traffic.

at Rock Spring Park

“Like everyone else, TorHoerman Law is adjusting to the new normal of 2020,” said Tyler Schneider, THL attorney and president of the TorHoerman Law Employee Foundation. “But with the difficulties this year has brought, helping our community is more important than ever. “So, we’re going forward in social distance style with a contactless, drive-through approach that is going to make this giveaway not only possible, but efficient and safe,” Schneider said. Those interested in receiving a turkey should plan to meet at the Alton Farmers Market at the intersection of Henry Street

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, November 19, 2020 • 25 and Landmarks Boulevard at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 The annual turkey giveaway began in 2014 when THL learned 12% of Madison County families have difficulty obtaining consistent meals. The goal was to assist these homes and make sure that they were able to celebrate the holiday tradition with a delicious meal. Through the years, countless local businesses and families have worked together with THL to turn this goal into a reality. In

total, THL has given away 4,350 turkeys. The event has been successful in previous years. Therefore, TorHoerman Law was determined to find a way to continue the giveaway despite less-than-ideal circumstances. “THL realizes the struggle people endure on a day-to-day basis,” said Kristie Stephens, a THL employee. “This pandemic has created a greater hardship on the people of our community, and THL is determined to do what we can to ease the stress.”

(For The Edge) Left to right, Rotary Club District 6060 Governor Tom Drennan, Metro East Community Rotary Club members Marge Ogle, Molly Makin and John Makin and Goshen Rotary Club President Gireesh Gupchup gathered on Oct. 24 for the Pints for Polio fundraiser at Recess Brewing in Edwardsville.

Rotaries From page 19 At the Children’s Museum (in Edwardsville), we helped them clean out their garden when the weather was still good. “We’re scheduled to help 25 District 7 families in the outlying areas that need to have dinners provided. Just like we did last year, we’re going to help the Goshen Rotary Club deliver meals during the holidays. We usually have a Christmas event where six or seven veterans join us at Edison’s (Entertainment Complex) with all our club members and we give them Christmas presents. Because of the pandemic, it’s going to be different this year, but we still want to make sure the veterans will have presents to open.” Changes for the Edwardsville Rotary Club include having a combination of

Zoom and in-person meetings. “For our in-person meetings, we are practicing all of the safety measures and protocols,” Voegele said. “It’s actually added to some of our attendance because people that cannot join inperson meetings can join us through Zoom.” For Gupchup, the GRIP grants are proof that Goshen Rotary Club is still providing much-needed assistance in the community. “We’re excited that we got a good response and that we can help the community out at this difficult point in time,” Gupchup said. “(The pandemic) is essentially a one-in-a-hundred-year event and it has been pretty catastrophic.” More information on each of the local Rotary Clubs is available on Facebook at Rotary Club of Edwardsville, Metro East Community Rotary Club and Goshen Rotary.

(Jae C. Hong | AP, file) Nintendo Switch game consoles are on display at Nintendo's official store in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Time spent playing video games can be good for mental health, according to a new study by researchers at Oxford University. The finding comes as video game sales this year have boomed as more people are stuck at home because of the pandemic and many countries have once again imposed limits on public life. The paper released Nov. 16, 2020 is based on survey responses from people who played two games, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Academics, video game makers team up in rare collaboration

By Kelvin Chan AP Business Writer LONDON — A study by Oxford University researchers on how playing video games affects mental health used data from video game makers, marking what the authors say is a rare collaboration between academics and the game industry. Lack of transparency from game makers has long been an issue for scientists hoping to better understand player behaviors. The paper released Monday by the Oxford Internet Institute comes as video game sales this year have boomed as more people are stuck at home because of the pandemic and many countries have once again imposed limits on

public life. The findings are based on survey responses from people over 18 who played two games, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The study used data provided by the game makers, Electronic Arts and Nintendo of America, on how much time the respondents spent playing, unlike previous research that relied on imprecise estimates from the players. The video game industry has previously been reluctant to work with independent scientists, the paper noted. Such partnerships might be needed for future research on the booming video game industry. Academics "need broader and deeper collaborations with

industry to study how games impact a wider, and more diverse, sample of players over time," said Andrew Przybylski, the institute's director of research. "We'll need more and better data to get to heart of the effects of games, for good or ill, on mental health." The research was funded by the Huo Family Foundation, a London-based foundation, and the Economic and Social Research Council, a U.K.-government funded public body. The researchers said they found the actual amount of time spent playing was a small but significant positive factor in people's wellbeing. The paper said the level of enjoyment that players get from a game could be a more important factor for their well-being than

mere playing time. Some 2,756 players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and 518 players of Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville responded to a survey, out of 250,000 invitations. They were asked to fill out a survey on their experiences that was matched up against playing time logged by the game companies. While the paper has yet to be peer reviewed, academics who weren't involved in the research said it showed some strengths, such as accurately measuring game playing time. "The fact that it's the electronic data collected from the device is very good, it's very objective," said Paul Croarkin, a psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota who has studied video gaming and

children. He said he had "lingering questions" about the study and said the self-reporting nature of the survey was a weakness, but said the researchers presented their findings in a balanced way. Joseph Hilgard, an assistant professor of social psychology at Illinois State University, also noted some limitations. "This is correlational data, and so we cannot estimate the causal effect of video games on well-being," said Hilgard. He added that respondents may have been playing other games simultaneously for which playtime wasn't tracked. "Finally, the low response rates on the surveys may limit the generalizability of the results to the entire player base of these games."
