it’s been for over 150 years. However, he said the amount of livestock and youth participating has certainly grown over the years. Tickets for the fair cost $5 for those ages 10 years or older and people younger than that enter for free. However, there are additional fees for the grandstand and rides. Money raised from the fair goes back into the fairgrounds. Overall, Brock expects around 12,000 people to show up to the fair throughout the week, including both attendees and exhibitors.

HURON COUNTY — Joann Cove, who worked for around 25 years at the front gate of the Huron Community Fair, is being recognized by the fair board as a Friend of the Fair. Since 2012, the community fair board has chosen to recognize people who have helped the fair over the years in different ways. Fair president Clark Brock said the board chooses those who have helped by either giving time or money to the fair. He said they also must be “long-time supporters” of the fair. Brock said Cove was chosen Joann Cove because of her years working at the front of the fair as a ticket taker. He said she was friendly and a big supporter of the fair. “She was the friendly person at the front gate. She was smiling, greeting people and having conversations,” he said. Cove said she started working the front gate when her husband gave her the spot when he started working another part of the fair. She said she enjoyed it because she got to talk to people and be out in the sun. Cove, who is 80 years old, said she retired from working the fair last year. She said she wanted to do one more year so she could retire on the 150th edition of the fair. But she still plans on attending senior night and go dancing if she can. She enjoys polka and line-dancing, in particular. When told about being recognized as a Friend of the Fair, she said it made her feel great and wanted. Brock said Friends of the Fair get plaques, their names on a billboard at the fair, and recognition at the junior livestock sale on Friday of the fair.

Huron Community Fair Board honors Ruth couple Bischers recognized for supporting the fair for about 40 years BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer HURON COUNTY — For their donations and support for roughly 40 years, Janet and Melvin Bischer have been recognized as some of this year’s Friends of the Fair. Fair president Clark Brock said the community fair board has recognized people who have supported the fair over the course of many years since 2012. The support could be through either time or money. Brock said Janet and Melvin Bischer were chosen because of their helpfulness with fair projects and their support of the youth at the fair. “We knew if we had a need and asked

Janet and Melvin Bischer pose in front of Melvin’s flower-filled manure spreader. They have been named 2019 Friends of the Huron Community Fair. (Andrew Mullin/Huron Daily Tribune) Melvin, he found a way to help us out,” he said. Pauline Bischer, Melvin and Janet’s

daughter, said they partner with a company called Bischer Ready Mix, which supplies services like landscaping and

concrete mixes. They have donated things like concrete, water, sand sawdust and bedding for the animals. Along with that, Janet said she and Melvin have bought livestock from youth at the fair. Janet said they have been big supporters of youth agriculture. They want to give young people the opportunities they have had over their many years of farming. Janet and Melvin bought their farm 59 years ago, starting with only $9 to their names. Melvin said farming has been a generational thing, with their parents being farmers along with their grandchildren. Melvin has been going to the fair for a long time, with him going as a kid during World War II. He said the fair never stops changing and he hopes it continues to stay active. Brock said friends of the fair receive plaques, their names on a billboard at the fair, and recognition at the junior livestock event on Friday of fair week.

Grandson pens note about grandparents’ involvement in fair Grace and Warren J. Krohn are two of this year’s Friends of the Fair Editor’s note: This piece was written by a grandson of Grace and Warren J. Krohn, who have been named some of this year’s Friends of the Fair.

Warren J. Krohn never much cared to ride on the rides, except for the ferris wheel, but he loved the Huron Community Fair. And he still loves it. He loves the buzz of excitement as the grounds are prepared for the year’s first guests to arrive. He loves seeing “the kids” show off their hard work with their animals and 4-H projects. He loves watching all the folks enjoying the rides and he loves watching his wife, Grace, ride the scariest rides with their grandkids. And Warren really takes pride in the small part he played in bringing the fair to the community and especially to his family. Warren loves every aspect of the fair, but it’s no secret that his favorite part has always been working with the horses. He always had horses of his own, and he loves talking with people who love horses. Warren was the go-to guy for the horse show. He hired the judges, trained the ringmasters (usually his grandsons), and he fielded

the myriad of questions from riders and owners. He absolutely loved every minute of it. If it was stressful, you didn’t know it, because he was always smiling, waving, and patting the necks of the horses as he freely chatted with the owners and riders. You could tell that the Huron Community Fair was one of his favorite times of year and if he were physically able, there’s no doubt that he would still be chatting with the people and rubbing the horses’ necks this year as well. Grace and Warren have been friends of the Huron Community Fair for as long as their family can remember. For Grace, the fair is fun with the family, an annual pass to be a kid herself, riding all those rides with their grandkids. For Warren, the fair is about family as well, but it’s also about the community. He really is proud to be from the Thumb and he is proud to have served on the Huron Community Fair Board, working to bring the fair to all of us who live and have grown up here. The fair is a place where everyone can switch gears. Pet the head of a goat, ride a pony, have some fresh squeezed lemonade, while standing in line for the ferris wheel — and of course, the fair is the place where all Warren and Grace Krohn are pictured at the 2018 Huron Community Fair, looking at the of us can see those beautiful horses! sign listing past Huron Community Fair Board Members.
